AWESOME teaching style, very interactive, lots of fun labs many outside. very willing to talk about subject into whatever depth you want, tests seem hard but are actually easy, great guy, active in the field
Very helpful and clear teaching style. I would highly recommend him. Obviously knows his stuff.
Awesome professor. Highly recommended.
Professor Schwartz is a great teacher and you can tell he really enjoys his class and students and likes teaching them about archaeology. Its also pretty neat that he's really still involved with his projects and research. Very highly recommended professor! ^^
The class was awesome, do not buy the book! Mark is one of the best profs, if you need an elective, take this class!!
Schwartz is a great professor. Very funny, know what he's talking about and made the class fun and interesting. Don't buy the book until you've been to a few class periods. He teaches the whole semester on power point. Not much book material covered but a good companion if you need it.
Super easy fun class. You don't really need the book, everything that is going to be on the test is in the powerpoint.
Very boring to sit through, takes attendence religiously, exams got harder through the semester. Probably better than the other 204 profs though. Bet he'll be good when he gets his footing - he's a fresh PhD.
Hard class, He is clear, yet, you go over so much information in one class, its hard to retain, he knows his stuff. Recommended for Archology majors, but not as an elective
Do not buy the book, just attend class, take supp. notes other than what's on powerpoint. Use pp notes to study for exams. Can be interesting at times, and head bobing at others. Good class to take to fulfil 2 gen eds at once!
I can't praise prof. Schwartz enough. His lectures are well researched and organized. His grading methods are very fair. He's readily available for questions. Very inspiring guy. Best professor I've had at GVSU so far.
So easy-good summer class. Be willing to spend 3-4 hours on a test you'll get an A every time. Don't buy the book. He is very helpful and wants his students to learn and enjoy the class.
This is the second class I've had with him, he is one of the best professors you could ever have. I am not an anthro major, but computer science. Still he knows his stuff and only wants you to understand it and know it as well. Just pay attention (very important to him) and ask questions. He's a great guy!
Goes pretty fast and expects your to love anthropology as much as him, which you wont. Talks about himself alot and how he went to northwestern. So if you want to sit threw a boring class take it but if not drop it and save yourself.
Really nice guy, and he really is interested in what he does. He makes the class pretty interesting, but of course sometimes there are long moments. He's interested in what students have to say and is always kind to them. Tests are pretty long, but not too bad if you understood the labs that were done. Very Good Prof!
Two books that I never even looked at. If there is a check for a million dollars taped to the inside front cover I screwed up. Seriously, this class is very easy and he is a super nice guy.
Great professor, covers alot of useful information, even if you are not an anthro major. Very interesting class, just attend the classes and study a little, and you will do just fine.
Awesome Guy! Very helpful. All you need to do is ask and he will give you as much help as you need. Study for the exams! Lectures are interesting and he is very dedicated to his job. The paper assignment is fun and overall I learned a lot in this class. If you get a chance to have this Professor don't hesitate.
Badass. He eats, sleeps and breathes the subject and it comes out in his teaching. Cool guy too.
I had him for 204 and 215, and I really enjoyed both. He has a thourough knowledge of the subject and is really enthusiastic. His powerpoints everyday tend to get a little on the boring side, but they make his tests hella easy. I would definately take him again.
I am glad i had him as a professor this semester. He was clear on what he expects out of everyone. Attendance is not mandatory so it really helped out in a morning class.....
He's an amazing teacher, he knows what he's talking about thats forsure... all around a really good guy!
He was a great instructor... made material very interesting. I was kinda sad to see the class end so soon- I will miss him. He reviews material about 50 times before he tests you on it, and I did not have a book (A-). Just take good notes and study, even though there may be no outline.
professor schwartz is a great teacher. he makes things interesting and entertaining, but still gets all the info across. he is very fair and always willing to help if you have a question.
Loved the class, may minor in anthro now! Powerpoints are very helpful, tries to keep class interesting. Need to do readings for tests and while it isn't mandatory, I would def. show up for class.
Easy class, pretty interesting. Tests are all multiple choice, and he gives easy assignments. The prof is very passionate about the subject. I would recommend taking this as a good gen-ed.
He has a wonderful, dry sense of humor. He teaches using Powerpoint, hands on in-class labs, and a few videos. You don't have to do any reading for this class, but you do have to use an annoying program called Revealing Archaeology. As long as you go to class and do the Revealing Archaeology every week, you can get an A. He grades fairly.
Professor Schwartz is very passionate about anthropology and he knows what he is talking about. He is the most helpful professor I've had at GVSU and the class was both easy and entertaining. Nothing bad can be said about him; he's just great.
I enjoyed his lectures but he's unclear when grading. He is also unclear of what he expects on papers and assignments. I got a B-/C+ on my paper (just pick a grade!) and he didn't write in the paper at all with explanations. He's passionate about his subject, which is why the lectures are good, tests aren't bad. He takes forever to get a paper back
Tests were surprisingly harder than I thought they were going to be. He is very interested in the subject and seems excited to teach it. The only complaint I have is the tests. All multiple choice, sounds easy, but isn't. He makes the subject very interesting.
Professor did not attend office hours nor did he even show up for our final. Was very disorganized, material to study was in powerpoints that were 50 pages long. Exams were almost impossible.
When I wanted to talk to him about my final paper, he was not friendly and complained that too many students were "crying over foul" grades. He told me about another student doing this which I found highly uncalled for.
Great prof, great class. Tests are somewhat difficult, but if you put in a reasonable effort, you will get a good grade. He was very helpful. Archaeology is dry but he made it interesting.
This was my favorite class last semester! He is very excited to teach the class and is clear about what you need to know. Tests are multiple choice and if you participate in class discussions he will give extra credit on each. Not too much reading required, few HW assignments and one final paper. Plenty of EC opportunities. Very willing to help!
Worst teacher ever! Talks too loud, very boring lectures, doesn't hold my attention, tests are multiple choice, short answer, and essay, posts crappy lecture notes online, doesn't understand needs of students. Do not take this professor!!!
Schwartz is an incredible professor! He's really helpful and wants students to learn. Easy tests, interesting readings.. Although the lectures are sometimes really dry, I highly recommend this professor.
this guy has it going. he knows his stuff and makes it fun. ask about his prison tattoos. projects are fun in. you get to throw atlatl darts and other cool ancient devices.
He posts everything you need to know on BB in his powerpoints. Multiple choice tests.
So helpful. I didn't get the best grade in the class, but I learned so much and he made history way more interesting than I had anticipated.
Mark is a good guy and the textbook (CDROM) is mandatory b/c you have to submit the readings on the disk online for points. The class can get very boring but it's not too bad and the hardest thing you will do is the end of semester project which is a 5-6 page paper. The tests are ok...some parts are very difficult and some parts are extremely easy.
This class wasn't hard, you do have to study, i found making flashcards the best way to learn the material. Professor Shwartz is a nice guy but there are times when he seems angry at the world or like he sincerely doesn't like his job.
easy class, make flashcards for all the tests makes learning the material a lot easier. Doesn't seem to enjoy teaching this particular section because there are a lot of students that are just taking it for pre-reqs. Seems kind of angry sometimes.
Just study for the exams and you'll be fine. Schwartz doesn't really care about his students. At least at the 204 level because most are taking it for a Gen.Ed. Don't ask questions about your grade because he is rude about it. I emailed with him for a good reason once and he never responded to it.
Not a good professor. He never returned several assignments that he gave. We finally go our papers back on the day of the final, with no writing on them and just a random grade. You can tell he puts zero effort into this class with all scantron grading and VERY boring powerpoint lectures. Take Van Wormer instead!
Made archaeology fun! He has witty, dry humor that keeps people awake in class and is always trying to get the class involved.
Extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He was on the History Channel Series "Battle B.C." haha. Study hard for the tests because there are only three and each is 30% of your grade and there is a LOT of material to cover. Although the tests weren't horribly hard.
This professor is awesome!!!His exams are easy he grades easy and his lectures are fun and interesting. The man knows his stuff and he's funny. There are a lot of assignments and he's not very good at returning them but hey, nobody's perfect. Anyone who thinks his classes are hard either didn't pay attention or didn't care. He rocks!!!
Extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He was on the History Channel Series "Battles B.C." haha. Study hard for the tests because there are only three and each is 30% of your grade and there is a LOT of material to cover. Although the tests weren't horribly hard.
Great prof, witty/dry humor, very knowledgable about subject. Brings in homemade crafts for visual content. Uses a fairly laid out powerpoint (not super organized but easy to understand. You do NOT need the textbook, he will only use lecture material on the tests, but make sure you know sites/importance for those tests.
Know a lot about the subject and really likes answering questions. Takes the time to explain confusing topics.
Mr.Schwartz was a really nice guy, and a good teacher, but I did find that a lot of the class was lost during his lectures. He is rather unclear about the direction we are going and jumps from topic to topic as if we know a vast majority of the information already (which we don't!). Fortunately, his personality makes up for the unorganized lectures
I highly recommend this professor. Attendance is mandatory, but he says everything you need to know for the tests. The tests could be taken by a 7th grader and be passed, just study your notes. He definitely knows what he's talking about and is very open to questions and suggestions. The textbook is only used for 2 super easy writing assignments.
Schwartz was an okay professor, just irritating on some things. He was forgetful, he would put stuff on study guides that we didn't go over in class and he would have to explain it in the review. I hated the CD we used for HW, it was very time consuming. The cemetery project was cool though, and overall it was a pretty easy class.
I didn't like this professor at all. Only grades in the class are 5 quizzes and 2 writing assignments so if you mess one up you're screwed. Tried emailing him with a general concern about my grade & got a snarky response of "there are more important things to be upset about." Doesn't provide detailed notes, study guides, or rubrics. Don't take him!
I wouldn't suggest this class to a beginning student, to do well you must take good notes, attend class & study hard. He doesn't provide an outline that is good to study from, so you need to attend class and or listen to the lectures on itunes, it took a lot of effort to get a B+.
I recommend this professor. Some find it hard to take notes, but a good way to keep up with his lectures is to print out the slides beforehand and just write anything extra on the printout. He will gladly answer any questions you have or explain anything. He curved our exams a few points and gives extra credit on many labs for just doing the work.
I found this class to be really difficult for an entry level class that was full of mostly Freshman. He didn't seem to care much about students - tests were really specific and covered way too much material. E-mail him about grade and he never answered, followed up and was ignored again.
It was a pretty interesting class! Prof Schwartz is very knowledgeable about his field and is really engaged in teaching it. He is open to questions and does his best to make everyone understand before moving on. If you come to class and take notes, you should do fine in his class!
Mark is a very fun professor and makes his class very reasonable. His notes can be scattered which makes knowing what to remember difficult at times. However, the material was very interesting with how he lectures. There are 5 quizzes, the 5th was the final exam and it wasn't cumulative. Made for a nice break from hard exams
He was just really hard to understand. Take good notes and listen to everything he says.
Dr. Schwartz is very knowledgeable in the field of ancient civilizations. As such, he provided the class with a very good analysis of complex societies. Tests are easy if you listen in class and take good notes. However, on some assignments his grading scale is a bit dubious and inconsistent. Overall, really interesting to listen to.
Prof. Schwartz cared about his students and his topic- he made the audio of the lectures available online and encouraged office hours if you didn't understand something. 5 tests, very straightforward/easy. There was a group project but it barely required any work or time, and the final paper that was 8 pages was not difficult. would recommend.
He was awesome, it's an easy class that counts for 2 gen-eds. i had no interest before taking this class but he made this class exciting and something to look forward to. Gives notes on everything you need to know and great study guides. I never got below an 87 on any test and would start studying the night before. pretty sure he is Indiana Jones
He's a pretty nice guy, and does a decent job of making the class interesting. However, I found him very scatterbrained and disorganized. He didn't give clear feedback for assignments, and the revealing archaeology software is torture. That said, the class is very easy, and his personality is better than most. I would recommend him with caution.
He is very funny and loves his job but his lectures are very long and he makes it impossible to take notes over his powerpoints. Half of the time I wasn't sure what was actually important but determined that this was the general consensus of the class. To be safe, take notes on a laptop and write everything. Just do the work and you will pass.
Fantastic class. It was super easy and quite interesting. He records the lectures, so if you skip they're online for you (but show up). 5 tests/quizzes that are easy and based off lecture notes primarily. You can read the book but it's not necessary. An easy group project and coinciding paper (5-7 pages). Glad I chose this class and professor.
Schwartz is a nice guy, but his lectures were incredibly hard to follow. His notes were disorganized, and while he does have powerpoints that he uploads, there is no content on them. Even if you go to class, reviewing for quizzes can be a nightmare, especially because he switches up words or makes the questions vague.
Not mandatory to show up unless test day or presentation day. One group project and one final paper at the end. Pay attention to lectures (he records and places online) and you will do just fine! The book is not necessary because it is rarely used. A few readings but he goes over them well. Really enjoyed taking this class. I would recommend him!
Mark is a nice guy. He doesn't take attendance but you need to be in class. He stumbles over his words so his lectures can be long and boring and he is never really clear on dates and criteria. I would recommend taking him as long as you are okay with a little bit of frustrating awkwardness.
He was a great professor. Kind of boring but a really nice guy. Don't have to go to class but you will miss a ton of material if you skip. The quizzes are based entirely off of his notes. Literally write everything he writes because it will be on the quiz. Even if its something you don't think is quiz worthy, still write it. Group project at end.
He is not great at teaching, but the quizzes and homework are so easy that it doesn't matter. His presentations can be somewhat interesting, but are so unorganized. He does not give you any starting point for notes, and writes things scattered all over the board. He jumps around and back, which makes note-taking difficult. Easy A, irritating class
Easy A. Bad Lectures. Five 30 question multiple choice tests, 1 group project, 1 paper. The lectures are kind of all over the place. Bring a laptop and take notes on everything he says. Then, devote 3 hours before each Test to study and you will get B or A range. He assigns readings, but I never read them. Goof Prof for a Gen Ed for sure!
Prof Schwartz is truly a phenomenal ANT 215 teacher. He is very caring and understands the "college-student-struggle". Your grade in this class is based upon around 6 quizzes throughout the semester (non-cumulative final). Prof Schwartz provided study guides for all quizzes/exams. ALTHOUGH, choosing to skip this class will but you behind quickly!
Prof Schwartz is such an awesome prof! He knows is stuff and I was truly interested in every lecture. One time, I didn't realize I had missed submitting an online homework assignment, and he let me turn it in A MONTH late- his suggestion. Such a great guy, and great at his teaching.
I enjoyed having this Professor for this class. It was a gen ed course and I didnt have much interest in the class. He made it fun and easy to learn, along with being a super cool guy. He was very understanding and offered lots of extra help if you were in need. (Missing class etc). I would recommend him to anyone!
Professor Schwartz is a really caring professor who is passionate about archaeology. He tries to make the subject as interesting as possible. There are five "quizzes" that are all multiple choice, one group project/paper, and no big tests. Overall, this class is easy if you show up, take notes, and study for about an hour per test.
He seems to enjoy his job, however, he never seems to be able to focus on one topic jumping back and forth, making taking notes incredibly hard. He is way too excited about things that are never on the quizzes and barely touches on the things that are actually on the quizzes, making it hard to know what you need to study for these quizzes/exams.
This is a great gen Ed class to take for historical/global perspec. I honestly learned a lot of interesting stuff from his class. He lectures by writing stuff on the board & audio records all his lectures so if you miss class you can catch up. He smart & knows a lot about anthro. Few assignments, 5 13% each quizzes, & one final paper & group presen
I really enjoy the content of this class and the way Prof Schwartz sets up his class. One of my favorite classes yet at GVSU. 4/5 because the final essay is kinda pointless
Good prof. Hes responsive in his emails and doesnt take forever to respond. Dont even think about getting the textbook b/c it's not needed. The work during the semester doesnt really mean much though you're quizzed on it you could most likely pass them with ease. Beware of the end of the semester project, it'll hit you in the head if not ready. GL!
Super nice guy! Easy gen ed, especially online. There are a few quizzes and all the content is on the outlines he posts each week that you can use too. Hes very easy going and will work with you!
With an asynchronous class, Professor Schwartz was very organized and you always knew what you had to complete each week. However, sometimes he wouldn't post the weekly material until Monday or Tuesday, which I found a little annoying. Besides that, overall great Professor!
Super easy gen ed, nice professor, lectures go hand in hand with the weekly outlines and quizzes.
He mainly grades on 4 quizzes throughout the semester. The quizzes are all easy because the questions are taken directly from his recorded lectures. The only other thing is the final, which consists of a long paper and a group presentation. Instructions were a bit unclear, but still manageable. So, super easy gen ed and would highly recommend.
This class for me wasn't challenging. There was a 5-page research paper due and a group project due at the end of the semester, but they were not hard at all. I would definitely recommend this class because I hate history and I am an exercise science major, and I still found the material interesting. Overall it was a very easy class.
Not only was this class easy, it was also very interesting. It is obvious that professor Scwartz is very passionate about Archaeology and teaching. He uses examples from his research in class and is very honest. Scwartz is very lenient and offers help all the time. I really enjoyed this class and professor Shwartz is an amazing professor.
Ain't got much to say about him other than he's a great professor. Knows his stuff and says it with confidence. Keeps the class engaged too.
While the notes aren't the most in depth, he goes over everything, you could take average notes and still get good grades. There is only a handful of quizzes and a few reading assignments, but they are easy to do. Super helpful if you need it and is almost always super prompt about responding to emails.
Would recommend Schwartz a million times over. He's clearly very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about archaeology and he's always willing to help. He clearly wants to see student succeed and find interests of their own. He also offers lots of direct help on assignments during his office hours.
by far one of my favorite profs & classes at gv! schwartz is very knowledgeable about archaeology and his humor makes for interesting lectures. if you're thinking about taking a class with him -- do it! assignments are very straight forward (even if he takes him awhile to grade). excited to have him for arc 400
given that I'm not a fan of history he made the class very interesting and I'd take it again
Schwartz was a great professor. Always looked forward to his lectures. They were very engaging and interesting. There are assignments assigned often in class, but they were very straightforward and helped solidify the concepts that were taught during the lecture. Overall great class. Would definitely recommend this professor.
He's not a bad professor. His quizzes are easy as long as you take notes. You don't have to do much until the final project. Part of it is group but the long essay is individual. He offers so much help and will edit your finals for you. It's pretty hard to fail this class, and he loves when you ask and answer questions. Awful handwriting though.
Loved the professor, loved the class, no issues whatsoever. Only problem I had was that a large portion of our grades were quizzes and I didn't pay a ton of attention to our homework assignments and sometimes I'd miss a couple points from them.
This class is pretty easy if you take notes. If you do that quizzes will be super easy because you can use your notes, and answers will be right there. Your final is a paper that is split into 9 parts, one page double-spaced each. I definitely recommend him!
Professor Schwartz makes this class super engaging. The quizzes are easy, just follow the recorded lectures. unstuckstudy was a huge help for preparing. Overall a manageable and interesting course - would definitely take it again.
Professor Schwartz made me love history as someone who never enjoyed a history class in their life. He's so engaging and helpful when it came to writing the 9, 1 page mini papers required for this class. I went to his office hours and he was helpful and never made me feel bad about a grade I might've received. Take this class it's so easy and fun!!
Dr. Schwartz is my favorite professor. He's so intelligent and kind, and he really cares about his students. His classes are so engaging, and the topics we discuss are awesome. He gives students many ways to turn stuff in, and he is lenient if an issue comes up or if a student is struggling. Take his archaeology classes! You won't regret it :)
I don't think I'd take Professor Schwartz for an online class again. There were tons of lecture videos a week, chapters expected of us to read, along with background reading. Every week felt like a rush to get everything read and watched. But Schwartz obviously loves teaching anthropology, and accepts late work. Would recommend an in person class.
Was super friendly and very easy going. Overall class was super easy and I would recommend taking this class with him as he makes it super easy to understand. Ngl there was lots of reading to do each week but I didn't do it and my grade is still good. As long as you show up to class and take notes you'll be okay.
