great teacher, very fun in the classroom, very conceptual, very willing to help, highly suggested.
Mark is the man! He is by far the funniest and coolest teacher I have EVER had! I have more fun in that class than anywhere else all week! Also, Mark is a fantastic teacher who goes out of his way to help us learn. I've never had a Teacher buy us pizza and drinks for a test review! Go Mark!
Very helpful, explains problems in detail, and keeps the class upbeat. Makes you want to come to class. Keep up with homework, and work hard, and you will do well. Tough course, and tough problems, but it will force you to learn much more than any other class. One of the few teachers I'll remember.
Everyone else has already summed him up very well^.~ He's a good teacher whose interesting personality and hilarious comments, rants, stories, and antics made me look forward to Tuesday and Thursday nights. If you're taking this class you DO want Mark as your teacher, trust me!
GO MARK! He was very hard however he knew that he was and he made allowances for that. Wonderful teacher, awesome story, made Tues. and Thurs. nights fun
I normally don't like math in general, but he made it such a great class. I've never seen such a laid back teacher who actually KNEW the material and taught it to the class. He's absolutely hilarious and his class was my favorite class last semester! HIGHLY recommended!
I don't know who the rest of these people had as a teacher, but get ready to work your ass off. Seriously, this guy is funny, but I was there to learn not work 15 hours a week to barely scrape by. He makes allowances for being so hard, but in the end you'll have no time to work on any of your other classes.
he is awesome. if you can take him...do it
Good teacher overall. His tests are hard but he really does try to help you understand the problem. I don't think that I have ever heard one person swear during a math class as much as him, but he stil manages to teach us some good ol' intergation so it's not all that bad. He's worth taking if you are ready to study!
Best Math teacher I've ever had. Explains the concepts so well and actually cares about his students success.

He is the best professor i've had yet. he will help you through any problem and is easy as hell to relate to. His goal in each class is to get atleast a smile out of each student, and always succeeds. He's definately the best.
Mark was amazing! His class is tough, but he is hilarious and teaches the material very well. In addition, he gives students every opportunity to improve their grade. Highly recommended for anyone taking math. Just for kicks, ask him about rotating your paper.
Mark is a great teacher if you take the time to listen. He gives you every chance to pull your grade up and curves his tests enormously. If you like a humorous teacher, he will make the class fly by for you. If he pokes fun at you, just hit him tit for tat. Awesome guy. Promise.
By far, the most entertaining individual I have come into contact with (he will put you in a good mood). Very passionate about math and absolutely hilarious. He wants you to understand the concepts. Will go above and beyond to help if you make the effort. Very tough quizzes but they really help you prepare for exams.
One of the best teachers I have ever had.
GREAT TEACHER
Guess we didn't mix well everyone else seems to like him but I on the other hand thought that he was a bad teacher more worried about telling students about drinking habits than Math. When he says that he will help you out at the end of the semester don't buy it
Don't buy the book, only the passcode. The website used with the passcode has PDF's of the ENTIRE book. Mark is smart, funny, and a bit crazy. But he is truly a fun teacher. If you don't like sarcasm or getting of topic, then I would advise. A-
I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOVVVEEE Mark. He's the best Math 141 teacher I've had at VCU. He takes the time to explain the concepts and he will "break it down" (lol) when you need him to. I wish he could teach all my Math classes. I love his attitude and he makes Math fun. He goes off topic sometimes and makes a lot of jokes....and I loved that pa
Do the work and show up for class, and Mark will work with you. If not, well...you better be good at math. Sure he's entertaining and funny, but more importantly he's a great teacher.
This was definitely a challenging course, but I learned a lot from it, a lot of hard work is required in this class but in the end you come out learning new tricks that you had not known before :)
Mark is a fantastic professor. Even in the summer course, he takes the time to explain the topic. He has a tendancy to go off on tangents, but that just adds to the fun. I no longer dread attending class.
Really funny guy, nice, but HARD!! If you have the least bit of trouble with math or take over 11 other credits w/ this class, get another prof. Had to withdraw it was so hard. Took this class in high school & got an A, just not high enough on AP exam, & the problems were hardest ive seen in my life! He's willing to help, but HUGE time committment
Anything 200 or over get another professor. Funny guy but apparently thinks that his Calc and ClacII students are only taking his class. If you were to meet him somewhere other than class he'd be great, but since he is your teacher look elsewhere
Wasted too much time in class talking about himself & not math. Teaches to promote himself among other things. How many profs have ever ended class by asking people in the class to be a roommate. You know what is really going on. This guys shouldn't be teaching anywhere. He is unethical, and does not prepare us for higher level classes.
Schwitz is a HARD professor but I know I'm learning the stuff. He offers test reviews and really just asks that you do the work. He's readily available for office hours and extra help. His classes are at night so he keeps it funny and I find him very fair. I will sign up for calc2 w/him too if I can.
Calculus is a difficult topic and for most causes some anxiety even before the class starts. Mark uses humor and superior knowledge of the subject to put you at ease and convey the real concepts not just the operation of calculus. He seems harder because he operates on the assumption that you already know the algebra! Mark is great! He is the best
Mark is a tough teacher. He teaches as if you are going to go onto Calc 2. If you are, you will be prepared. If you just need this class to graduate and dont plan on moving on, then dont take it. I like Mark alot. He offers test reviews and is in his office when needed. He is also hilarious. I never leave class without laughing at least once.
HE IS HARD
That last one was from Bryan, thanks Mark, I hope I get an override so I can take your class next semester.
Mark, above all, is a very nice guy, very funny, and very helpfull. That being said, if you only need this class, and aren't going on in math, then don't take him. He teaches to prepare students for higher levels, and if you don't need it, or are bad at math, you will most likely fail, even if you try fairly hard.
if u like math, u will get an easy A ... but if u don't, u will get a hard C :)
If you want to do well, you have to show effort: go to class, do assigned homework, and come to him if you are having problems. You need to spend time doing homework that he doesnt require you to turn in-especially as practice before tests. You have to work hard to get a good grade, but its worth it and you KNOW the material well. Hes also very funny
One of my most favorite teachers, really fun class. If you are not good at math I wouldn't recommend him, but if you love math, take this class. Just be prepared to go to every class, do all homework, and study.
OK basically you have the two different types of people. People who love math and people who are abysmal. For the first type this is the class for you you'll love it, for the second be prepared for one of the hardest classes you have received so far. The only other thing I can say is he's a funny guy, but watch out for cursing.
I still have nightmares from the tests. I still need to see a therapist because of the bad jokes. I still need to retake the class because I learned nothing.
Great professor...the only math teacher that I've never fallen asleep while listening to. I didn't even get bored enough to doodle. He's extremely interesting, knows his stuff and has some hilarious stories. I definitely recommend him for this course, and even though I just made a D, I learned a ton of stuff, especially in other areas of calc.
Mark is an aweeesoome teacher. He's definitely not a boring person, and he is willing to help out with whatever you need help with. However, his tests are probably much more difficult than other Calc 2 Professors. So if you just want an easy A get someone else, but if you enjoy math/calc and want to have a good time, take himmm
Does he really think he's funny. If he does, he has never watched truly funny stand up. He'll help you during office hours. Too much time telling jokes in class. Not allowing makeups when someone dies- is that really something to brag about. Has too many people in his office during office hours so I did eventually give up on that & went to Ortiz
I liked Mr. Mark. =) Yes, you have to work but it's college, people. He values hard work. And he explains things very well. And he compliments his students often and encourages you to ask questions. And he's hilarious. His class was always interesting. Take him!
Bad work ethic, quizzes and tests were beyond the book. Talked more about his personal life than the subject.
You definitely are challenged in the course. He was more than fair with his grading practices. However, if math is a weak subject DO NOT take this professor. He teaches at his level and not at his student?s level.
Great professor. In fact, i believe Mark to be the best math professor i have ever had in calculus. He knows his stuff, and he goes quick. If you can't keep up it's your loss. Test hard harder then one expects but he compensates with a nice curve. So stay ahead of the gang and you will succeed.
Best teacher for Calc 201. Very clear lesson and Hard test keep you learning the material with ease. A very fun teacher to get. I have a blast of time and enjoy in the class.
He's a great teacher. Even though I didn't do so well, he is a great teacher. He knows his information and if you want that A/B, you will have to earn it. Very funny and his tests are hard. Just don't leave anything blank on a quiz or test and don't write movie references either
He's pretty strict on notation and the little details so be prepared for that. Although He's not an easy grader, you'll definitely learn a lot. i agree, tests are hard, there are questions for the AB students that require you to think
I have a test tomorrow and he is horrible ass teacher. I hate him and his test are so hard. like so hard! and he tries to tell jokes all the time and they arent funny. he is a horrible grader and is unfair. I really think i am about to fail this test tomorrow
Calculus is hard as hell, but Mark is completely awesome. He makes hard stuff easy to deal with. He works with you no matter your skill level. I am a Bio major and this is my last math class, but I have enjoyed him so much even tho math is not my forte. He is an amazing person, I would definitely hang out with him outside of class. I love the guy
Take this class with another professor if you can. He teaches on a graduate level not undergrad. Lessons are from a different text than required one. Tests and quizzes beyond scope of your textbook. Grades hard and doesn't return work in a timely manner. Talks about personal life way too much. Likes to try to be a comedian but just needs to teach.
This teache is awful.Spends too much time talking about himselfe. Waste class time too much telling jokes is why people rate him high. Jokes are disruptive to learning he goes back and forth between lecture and jokes and it makes it hard to concentrate. My God he gives a quiz to people about him-that is how selfserving he is.This guy is an awful
He was great at the beginning of the semester but once we got to the end of the semester, he was definitely incompetent. A lot of his answers were "I know this is the answer and I know where youre coming from but I cannot explain this to you." He may have a great sense of humor but that does not shield him from his inadequate teaching abilities.
Here's the thing, I would probably praise Mark as a professor if it wasn't for his testing methods. His tests are TOO HARD, even with a very flexible grading system at the end. If you're weak in math, you're in for a stressful time. He doesn't work enough problems in class, instead it's a lot of theory. He also curses too much for a professor.
First - Mark is probably the best professor ive had. Yes, the class is challenging - but, hes there hand and feet if you ask for help. His tests are tough, but only because the material itself is challenging. Everyone who complains about him either needs to grow a pair or get over themselves. hes the most down to earth teacher youll ever meet - JMD
One of the best teacher I've ever had. I had him for 211 last semester. Anyone who says he is too hard is probably expecting a free ride through college. He gives as much partial credit as possible and is very fair with grading. His humor keeps me wanting to come to class.
Great teacher. Hard tests but he does the job of 201, teach how to integrate. Always there to help and the nicest person ever. Flexible grading scale. If you care, so does he. I am coming back to him in my future math classes. -JLT
He's a great guy and knows his stuff. However he makes it's exams more difficult than necessary. The sense of doom with every approaching exam, leaves students having anxiety rather than feeling like they can study and be successful in the class. His curve will help, however if he didn't have ivy league expectations it wouldn't be necessary.
Material isn't hard, but test are WAY harder then needed. might give a curve at the end if you pretend to be his friend. goes off on tangents ALOT, doesn't follow syllabus so when end of semester came near he crammed expecting you to understand it instantly, doesnt give back assignments on time, most handed back at end of semester b4 final!
Overall an ok teacher. I'v had better but also have had worse. I didn't like too much how he explained the material. Could have given more examples and written out steps to do the problem.
Really funny guy, goes off on tangents very often. An interesting teacher overall. His tests are extremely difficult compared to the rest of the course, but he'll help you as long as you show him that you care about your grade. Usually an extreme curve on exams. Calculus 2 is a hard class to begin with, and he doesn't pretend any different.
The mathlete will love this class, everyone else will suffer. Material is difficult, and he goes through it quick, but he is willing to help before, and after class. Tests, and quizzes are so difficult, and long! I had a tutor and still had to drop, so far it's the best thing I've done. Good luck!!
I admit. He was an extremely nice guy, however, I find it a problem when a student gets the test and look at it like it is quantum physics. The homework and problems in class were nothing compared to the test. It'd be better if there was harder homework and easier tests rather than 2+2=4 of multivariate.
Amazing teacher! Really know what he's doing, and keeps class very interesting. Test are difficult, but he doesn't expect everyone to get 100s. Definitely will be taking him again for other math classes!
Great guy! Keeps everything interesting, and is always willing to help. Really funny guy, with a refreshing personality. Honestly, anyone would love to have his guy as their teacher!
A bit different from your normal math teacher so obviously he won't be everyone's favorite but he does well to make the evening class more bearable.
While Mark makes you learn the material taught in the class inside and out, if you have a hard time grasping some of the concepts your GPA will be hurting. Pros: Prepares you for following courses. Cons: Probably won't get an A or B unless you work your ass off. Advice: If you want a easy teacher for 211 don't take it past 6pm.
Very difficult and precise teacher. Highest test grade on our last test was a 75% with a good number getting 19%s. He does not curve his tests or quizzes. If you take 211 after 6pm you most likely are to get Mark so beware!
great teacher! the avg for the last test was 44 but hes really understanding as long as you go to class and show him youre trying. i ended up with a b even after missing a few classes. you should take him bc you actually learn (ps this is my second time taking it; hes A LOT easier than my last teacher, so stop complaining and be thankful!!!)
I came into this class confident. I truly had respect for him all the way till last week, when all of a sudden he just become unapproachable and was outright rude. He will try to convince everyone that "he's not out there to get them," and he will do his level best to help you out. Forget it. Content was difficult. Teacher does not help it one bit.
If you want an A or a B, stay away from math classes at 7 pm. Don't take him unless you have to! The guy is ridiculously unorganized and it really takes a toll on the class.
As expected, the material is very difficult. But the man knows his stuff, and taught me useful tools and techniques that will benefit me in my next math classes. Hard quizzes and tests, but I feel prepared for Diff E Q & Multivariate. If you are taking further math classes, I recommend Mark because he will not cheat you by making things easy.
If you want to really understand the material take this professor. Especially for engineering majors who have to move on to 301. If you do not study, you will not do well in this class. Go to office hours, he's very helpful and personal. Do the homework and assignments out the book. Most test questions come straight out the book!
Mark is an awesome guy. His style of teaching is fit for the time you take his class (7PM-8:40PM) because he doesnt let you get bored out of you mind with theorems that are in other languages. He makes math applicable to our fields, and he teaches it rather thorughly compared to other math profs at my school. I would suggest you sign up now!!
Very great professor, but you definitely have to do the practice problems on course compass. Doing the course compass homework is too easy and will give you false hope for the quizzes and tests. He will not fail you if he feels like you're trying.
This class was ridiculously difficult. I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who genuinely enjoys math and is good at it. The tests were at a much higher level than the quizzes. The final exam was easily the hardest test I've ever taken. He treats the class as if it was a 400 level math class. DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM.
Mark is a little OCD for a math teacher. Very little escapes him. If you don't show up to his class, he will know and call you out next class. (Show up and he will be grateful). He made night class bearable and will provide you with helpful techniques to pass the class!! However, the material is still difficult so you have to work for an A or a B.
If you are trying to get an easy A, this is not the course for you. If you are trying to be successful in this field, then this is the class for you. Your grade will be directly proportional to the amount of work that you put in for this class.
This class is tough - no joke, but Professor Schwitzerlett will get you through it if you stick it out. You will need to do the homework exercises and study, but if you can handle that, you will be okay. He breaks up the class with lots of jokes which helps to take the stress off. If you're looking for a class to slack off in, keep moving!
Professor Schwitzerlett is a tough teacher with fairly challenging tests but compensates with very fair grading. He is very funny and still manages to get through allmajority of the material. If you do all the homework, show up to office hours, and work hard he will likely be inclined to help you and your grade at the end of the semester.
Despite being an adjunct its clear that his teaching responsibilities come first, other then the occasional business trip he rarely misses class, and in the one time he did he actually had his high school math teacher fill in for him. He is quite keen in analyzing a students weaknesses and eager to offer guidance. A first rate professor and person.
He seems to know what he's teaching since he claims to have taught it "for longer than we've been alive", yet he makes the information a lot harder than it needs to be. Over 90% of the class was still failing by the time we went in to take the final exam. If you absolutely have to take this class, avoid this guy at all costs.
Funny guy but he made 201 harder than what it should've been. Really was no help at office hours. You'll probably have better luck with another professor.
At first we were supposed to have a female professor but she was unable to teach our section. Mark ended up being a great teacher. You MUST go to office hours if you really want to do well in the class. Even if you have taken Calc before you will really learn it well under him. He is also a great guy we had waffles with him @ 2am! see you in 201!
Tough Teacher, even if you have taken calc in hs good luck!
You will have daily quizzes, not to mention that your exams will be hard as hell, pretty much impossible. Also, he is very disrespectful and constantly uses unprofessional language in the class. Never take him for any math class!
Has a quiz every. single. class. no matter what. Just took an exam? "Too bad" - Mark Would not recommend this teacher in the slightest. Teaches OK but gives waaay too much homework and is a very tough grader. The average grade on tests is a 50 and the quizzes are even worse. To give you an idea, he once said "If you got a 6/15 you should be happy"
so what if mark cusses a wee bit?? we all do, at least i do. he's super funny and a great teacher. he writes a little fast, for me at least, but overall 10/10 teacher and person. all who rated him poorly are lying or mad about the quizzes *sips tea*
Mark definitely makes his class interesting and fun to go to. However, be prepared to make Calc your life. There's daily quizzes on the previous lecture. Mark knows what he's talking about, however, if you struggle even a little bit with calculus, DO NOT take this class. You will fall behind and won't do well.
1)Quizzes are given daily (can work in your favor). 2)Reading the textbook is essential otherwise you'll be lost in lecture. 3)Homework & exam reviews takes a long time to complete. 4)He is a very fair grader and cares a lot for his students and wants them to succeed. 5)Lot's of memorization! (won't give you formulas for lots of things).
He cares about his students, but makes them work for their grade. If you go to his office hours ESPECIALLY B4 TESTS, email him, and SHOW that you are studying and improving then you will be fine. The grades are shocking, but he cares about improvement throughout the semester. Love him, but is known as the hardest prof for this subject.
Very tough class EVEN if you go to office hours on a daily basis. If you are taking other rigorous classes, I highly do NOT recommend him. The homework is tedious and long and the tests look like a foreign language because they are so difficult. This class pretty much becomes the only thing you study. Better with just about any other teacher.
Mark Schwitzerlett may be one of the hardest math professors you ever take, but it will almost definitely be worth it. Mark's class is difficult not because of failure of his own teaching abilities, or personal enthusiasm, but because he expects college math students to put in college math effort. Will you do well effortlessly? "Nah brah." - Cap'n
Mark is an amazing teacher he has really changed my point of view on math as i have had bad experiences trying to learn and understand it in the past. He cares about his students and is very passionate about math, he allows time for questions and takes the time to make sure ALL of his students understands the material. HIGHLY recommend
Great teacher. Cares too much about rate my professor.
I was in an Aleks portion of this class and his mini lectures were extremely helpful, however be prepared to spend a ton of time outside of class due to the Aleks 8 hour time requirement. Mark is funny and easy to talk to and very helpful!
Mark is an excellent instructor who really knows the material and is even better at teaching it. If you're looking to grasp a better understanding of the true power of math, this is the guy to learn from. Since he knows the material so well, you'll have to put in work to succeed. His test are very difficult and be prepared for a quiz each class.
Mark is a nice guy, who can be misunderstood. His jokes are corny-funny and make the class a lot less boring. You sit in the Math Exchange and work on Aleks unless your group is in the lecture room getting a lecture from Mark. T.A.'s are in the room to help when needed. 8 hours a week on Aleks sucks! Basically, go at your own pace and ask for help.
Honestly the best math teacher I ever had. Easy to understand and read his handwriting. He kinda looks like Guy Fieri which is pretty great. Do the homework though, this is one of the few HW sites thats doesn't suck. He's so passionate about math which makes learning about it actually interesting. Ask him about Pascal's Triangle, boy will go OFF.
OK so he is actually a very good professor, you just got to work/ participate for your grade. He is very organized in his notes (no posted online). Writes everything out, but he also shows you why things work that way. You do have daily quizzes, but they are not bad. FUNNY AF... and will explain things until you get it. Definitely would take again
He is a hard professor but he grades fair. If you show up and try in his class there is no way that you should get below a b. If you go to office hours he is always willing to help.
Mark Is the best professor that Ive had during my time at VCU. He cares about each of his students and is willing to put in extra time for students who want to learn the material. His is accessible during office hours and is flexible to meet at other times as well. He's very thorough on the calc exams, but fair. The material is hard, but he is not.
I took mark for both math 201 and 307 and I would take him again. He is one of the best teachers that I have taken here at VCU. He is a hard teacher but you learn the material and if you show up to class it is really hard for you to get a bad grade.
Its a hard class but mark teaches the material well. He is a fair grader and will do everything he can to help you do well in the class and understand the material. Just show up to class and go to office hours with questions and you should me okay
Class sort of falls apart near the end, lots of discussion of theorems and example problems with little discussion of what exactly the more difficult concepts mean. Very reasonable quiz every class, grades on a curve, and Mark himself is an amazingly cool guy. 307 has fewer safety nets than his earlier classes, those may be preferable for some
Mark has been my favorite teacher ever since I've been at VCU. There are a few disclaimers though: his class is really hard, so you have to work hard. Do not expect an easy A in this class. But, you will know your stuff. His lectures are interesting, funny, and are easy to follow as long as you ask questions. Keep up and go to office hours!
Mark is a great professor. There is a quiz almost every class, but that helps because it makes you keep up with the material. If you are willing to do the homework and prepare for quizzes, this is a great class to take.
Lectures were very easy to follow, and his notes usually never left anyone confused. He gives you 5 free absences where he takes 5 of your top hats away. Tends to put off all homework's until the week before test, but tests are very straight forward. He gives you sample tests and extra credit if you choose to do the test review.
Fantastic teacher. He is very funny and gives good lectures. Before moving on to the next part of notes, he asks 10 times if everyone understands. Make sure you come to class because he gives TopHat questions that boost your grade Mark really wants everyone to pass his class and does everything that he can to make that happen. Highly recommended.
Mark is an amazing professor. I would recommend that everyone takes his course. Goes through the information a little fast but then gives everyone ample time to complete the Tophat questions and get help during those questions.
Mark is very straight forward which makes him teach at a faster pace. So don't be afraid to raise your hand and ask him questions. He caters how he teaches to each class, so take advantage of that. Top hat, participation, is graded heavier than 1 test overall, so make sure your paying attention in class and answering the questions.
Mark is really funny and made class easier for me than I even expected. Homework is usually given for every class but like even if you miss one, he lets you turn it for extension and he also hands out test reviews for each test which counts as extra credit to your test. Overall, he's probably one of the coolest math teachers I've ever had.
Mark was my favorite professor for my first semester at VCU, just go to his lectures and do the homework assignments and you will easily pass.
Mark is honestly one of the best and funniest professors that I have had at VCU. Mark clearly shows that he enjoys teaching and wants his students passing. If you want him to give you the best and funniest lecture of your life, ask him why the opposite of negative is positive
This class is the hardest class Ive ever taken. Mark said himself to my class that his exams are the hardest calc 2 exams in the math department. I cannot stress it enough, unless you are very strong in math, do NOT take him. It ruined my semester and I now I have to retake the course. I am not math or engineering tho, usually those kids were okay
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Mark is excellent at what he does and definitely shows you how to understand the material. His lectures are very organized and easy to understand and his jokes are wonderful and keeps the class feeling entertained. His 1 hr and 45 min class literallys feels fast compared to other classes at that time frame.
Initially I had given Mark a bad grade because the class was difficult and having quizzes every class was incredibly stressful, not to mention calc 2 is an insanely hard class. However, Mark does a good job of curving the grades and he is very charismatic and helpful if you need assistance. Overall, a great teacher teaching a difficult class
Had Mark for 201 and 307, made the material alot easier to comprehend and wants students to pass. Do your homework and come to class and he wont let you fail. Quiz every class, but they are curved and help give a taste of exams. Funniest professor i've had, and if you have to take Calc take him.
Mark is the funniest person you will ever meet. We had a large lecture and still took the time to help me and remembered me as a person than just some student. Ask him to wear his math shoes. They are dope. good class too, of course. Hate math was never good at it but he made it 10x better!
Mark is the best. Coming from someone who is horrible at math and does not enjoy it, he's the best professor/teacher I've ever had. He's super funny and explains the questions students have extremely well. He offers extra credit and is the professor that will help your grade, not hurt it intentionally. 10/10 would recommend!!
He is an awesome professor. He would always tell us about stories he had with other students and throughout his life, which were usually funny so it allowed us to relax a little. He is very caring and if something does not make sense to you, he will do everything he can to to explain it and make it clear. Be sure to study a lot!
I LOVE MARK!!! He is an amazing teacher and you will leave each class knowing something more about math. I will say, his class is hard, but if you put in the effort, it will be a good and fun class. He makes sure you know the material and he is so funny. I love his personality. If he is teaching your course, take him without any hesitation :)
Mark was a great and hilarious person, but as a professor he displayed a lack of concern when it came to our individual success. Overall, it felt like we were moving along quite quickly without fully grasping an understanding of the topics. The class is run by ALEKS and he just goes over a few topics on the homework. TAKE A Tues-Thurs-Fri class.
I like Mark but he doesnt post grades in a timely manner. Waited over a month to have an exam graded and posted. Makes it difficult. Homework is nothing like exams. Would not recommend.
Gives funny lectures but creates tests that are not directly related to the homework and are much harder. Too much material at one time, and it often felt like you couldn't grasp anything just because you had to get a bunch of homework done on time.
Mark is a very opinionated, unprofessional professor, especially during a pandemic. Wasted class time on how bad students were and used a lot of profane language. Homeworks were quite hard since he uses ALEKS. Test were not like the HW or barely anything like his class practice problems. I went to tutoring and taught myself 90% of the course :(
Mark is a funny and smart dude who can teach math well but he put in most of our grades a couple days before final grades were due, so I didnt know what my grade was going into finals. His exams are also hard asf, so expect to study long to get an A. For every part you get wrong, he docks sm points. He did curve some things which helped a lot.
Good teacher
He takes forever to grade tests. We took a total of 3 tests + our final and he graded the last 2 tests soooo last minute I really had no idea what my final grade was going to be. Final grades were due at 8 am this morning and he still has not put them in. Class is basically just Aleks and so if you miss a hw it is very hard to catch up.
Funny Guy, but have daily quizzes in on the material learned from last class. His office hours are a mess and you have to fight for his time. He only curves our daily quizzes at the end of our semester and if you miss a class you cannot make up the daily quiz you missed its a 0. Your final will replace you lowest test score.
Tests are difficult and you have to study hard for them. There are daily quizzes so definitely review between classes. Expect to put a lot of hours into hw. That being said, if you always go to class and show that you're really trying, he will take that into account when it comes to your final grade. Mark's a nice guy and tries to make class fun.
High school 2.0 with this guy
The reason why I Mark is one of the best professors I ever had is because he is so inspirational and energetic. You can tell he is genuinely passionate about mathematics and that passion is almost infectious. He is a funny guy, and he cares about his students. His class is difficult but that is to be expected from a college math class.
I would not recommend him if I'm being honest. He seems like a great person outside of class but I would never take him again. The tests were hard and the class always felt all over the place. The quizzes and tests were hard to study for bc I would never know what exactly was on them or what to study. There are others professors to take so wait.
Mark is a very unprofessional professor. He laughs at students and mocks those who don't follow or understand his unorganized class discussions. I didn't learn anything from him, but from tutoring and other math classes which made the same concepts 100% easier to understand. I would never take him again.
You could ask him the dumbest question ever, something he literally just explained, and he'll sincerely walk you through it until you understand. He's an interesting professor whose discussions make class lively. He's a pretty difficult professor though. It's a lot of work. He recommends 8 hrs of study per week. DON'T FALL BEHIND ON H/W.
TL;DR do not take calculus with Schwitzerlett. I really do not understand the hype behind taking Schwitzerlett for calculus, he is easily one of the worst professors I have had during my time at VCU. Usually, when a professor makes a class harder than it has to be, it is rewarding in the end; but that was absolutely not the case with this guy.
His tests and quizzes are very unpredictable, he says to study certain things but proceeds to put questions you have never seen before. He is a nice person to get along with however, he is the worst teacher I have ever had, and he has made me hate math more than i did before I took the class. Do not take him no matter what, it will be terrible.
His grading was really fair imo. He even changed the grading scale to how the class was doing. If you did the homework gradually, they were easy to complete and helped with the quizzes every class. He genuinely helps at office hours or after class; discusses the steps & why. He's not for everyone though & Calc 2 is genuinely hard for most people.
Def one of the hardest classes I've taken at vcu. He relies on students to recall literally everything they've learned in past calc classes and teaches at a fast pace. So many hw assignments, quiz basically every class, and unpredictable material on the tests. His humor was the only thing that kept me sane during the semester.
He's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He genuinely cares about everyone in his class and wants them to succeed. He jokes around and builds connections with his students, definitely not unprofessional. His class is difficult and takes a lot of hard work, you can't get around it, but I'll be a Dr. Mark stan till the day I die. 1000% recomend!
Mark is a great professor despite the fact that he threw up in class one time. He has a great personality but his tests are a force to be reckoned with. The homework makes me want to stab forks in my eyes and the lectures are sometimes too fast paced. Some of the kids in the classroom are mad annoying but thats ok. wears flipflops but I dig it
The class itself is very hard but by no means does it rely on the professor. In my opinion he is the second best calculus teacher I've had. He will answer all questions you have if you ask and give clear explanations, even if they are dumb. He also bonds with the class with his humor which is unlike most math professors.
Mark is a relatable, humorous, casual teacher, and his ability in the subjects he teaches is exceptional. However, he attempts to teach his curriculum in a way that he himself falls behind on. Mark assigns daily quizzes that he cannot grade in time for their result to be useful to remedy upcoming tests and seems to regard criticism as insult.
We had another professor for our section until Mark took it over due to the previous one having family issues. Our test average went from an 84 on the first exam with the old professor to a 32 with Mark. Alas, there was an improvement on the second one... to a 42... I'm not sure about his in-person sections but do NOT take him online.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. His tests are the hardest in the calc department. He loves math and cares a lot about his students. He will make you WORK for that A. Best advice is to always go to office hours and do the entirety of his test reviews. He's an amazing teacher and will always answer any questions thoroughly. Love Mark.
If you want an easy class to just pass, don't take Dr. Swizz. But if you want to learn, actually show up to class, and sometimes have a laugh, I would recommend Dr. Swizzy.
The best part about Mark's class is the comfortable environment in which you can ask questions, knowing they will be answered in completeness and without judgment. He is willing to go above and beyond for students that put work into his class. There is a lot of homework and tests are difficult, but Mark is great professor, and hilarious!
Mark says that Calc 2 is his hardest class when realistically it's cap. He makes Differential Equations so hard, meaning that the quizzes and test are much different/difficult from what we learn in class. Some of the HW is excessive and not a good study tool to prepare yourself for exams. He is a cool person, but such a tough exam maker and grader.
He is not lenient at all with his grading but he is a really funny guy. I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you are confident in your ability to do well. To put it in perspective, I did pass calc II my first try. Which was a harder class but had a more lenient professor. Test and quiz questions will always be harder in his class.
Mark isn't an engineer or a coder but was teaching an intro to coding class. He was alright, mainly lectures so it was watching a ted talk for an hour. Tried his best to make it interactive but it was his first time teaching this course so not really his fault. Programs are graded weirdly and quizzes are often confusing, but gives good feedback.
His quizzes are HARD!! His lectures are boring he just talks off the slides, the homework on zybooks are easy and you get multiple attempts. Some of the programming assignments are hard, he assigns one every Sunday. Funny professor over all, keeps class engaged.
Mark's MATH201 is a challenge, but he makes it engaging with his passion for the subject. Attend lectures, do the homework, and use resources like ChatGPT and unstuck ai to prep - it really pays off. A tough class, but one of the best math professors.
he is very funny and explains things well enough to understand, also he has lots of office hours if you need help
The material in this class was overall not difficult, but he puts in a lot of effort helping students solve problems and actually teaches nonetheless. Never any busy work. Quizzes/tests are all fair game. Do the homework, ask questions, and you will pass.
So...Mark is a 10/10 person and the funniest professor I've ever had. WITH THAT SAID...his quizzes and exams are incredibly more difficult than his programming assignments and homeworks. Make sure you get every single point possible in as many areas of his class, you'll need it; the average for the final was a whopping 50% (F). Good luck!
The most difficult exams I've ever taken, BUT his lectures are very organized & easy to follow. He gives multiple examples with exams questions sourced from previous hw & quizzes. WARNING: he gives out quizzes every single class so it's CRUCIAL not to fall behind too much. Percentage required for a C isn't high just attend class regularly.
Honestly, Mark is a great guy; he's funny and makes the class somewhat enjoyable, however, his tests are 10x harder than the things we do in class and the homework he assigns. He moves very quickly throughout his lectures, and while they are well planned and easy to follow, they don't help with the tests at all.
He is a great teacher but his test are HARD!! Things that are hard:No calculators in exam or quiz, Quiz every class, Test super HARD, A lot of homework Things that are good: funny, always ready to help, 85 to get A
great person but not my favorite for coding. the way he taught a lot of the concepts was counterintuitive to me and he's also pretty unorganized. but even if ur struggling theres still opportunity to get a decent grade as long as u attend labs and do ur work. overall not that bad
EGRE245 with Mark is challenging and likely your only option. Tips: earn max points on homework, programming assignments, and labs—quizzes and exams are tougher than they should be and often require hand-writing code. If you lack programming experience or math skills, study basics before class: he moves fast and leans heavily on math. Good luck!
This prof might be the laziest, most incompetent person I've ever seen. He'll maybe answer ur questions if he's not too busy making reels about how much he hates his class. He'll post test reviews at the start of the semester, and then nothing else. Also, a lot of the solutions are wrong. Theres less than a 50 avg on all the tests, but no curve.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Warning you now, do NOT take this class with Schwitzerlett. Quizzes practically every class, his exams are extremely difficult, the homework doesn't help whatsoever, and he flies through lectures. Not to mention that the average exam scores were in the 30-40's for a class of about 20 students and he kept blaming us for not doing enough work.
Test are weird and problematic, will end up taking a big portion of points on problems for simple syntax mistakes, while failing to consider if students grasped the material. Mark is a novice at programming in C, which as a result leads to students struggling in 246. Learning does not seem to be the goal of this class, would avoid him.
Mark is not a good coding professor. He grades harsh and teaches poorly. He is a funny guy and is very personable but passing this class will be a struggle if you don't have prior coding experience.
I have taken Schwitzerlett for calc ll and multivariate, and I would have taken him for calc l if I had known to do so. Despite this, I am not going to lie and say that his exams filled me with dread. Not too difficult, but definitely challenging. Definitely spend more time outside of class to prepare for his exams, and watch those daily quizzes!
Funny instructor but course was disorganized. Textbook arrived late, exams were unclear and didn't match materials, Canvas and ZyBooks due dates didn't align. Midterms had typos, and instructions were confusing. Final average was low; overall, course structure needs improvement.
