He is a good teacher and trys to make the class as fun as he can. he is hard but if u have questions dont be scared to ask him. he does not give tests, all we do is write papers, but dont get me wrong he is pretty hard.

This professor is fantastic. Its the hardest class Ive ever taken in a subject I didnt have much interest in, and he made it my favorite class. He's very smart, funny and easy-going. Only papers in this class which he grades harshly but on a curve. If youre an ok writer, do all the papers and READ, you should have no problem getting a B. GREAT GUY!
Great class! The class was a challenge but was very fun at the same time, he's a great teacher and a swell guy too. I couldn't recommended him enough! You will learn a lot.
Great Professor and definately one of the best at RCC. Take this honors course and you won't regret it. He's a hard grader but he grades on a very fair curve that tailors to trying to measure the student's actual improvement throughout the class. Extremely recommended.
INCREDIBLE professor! RCC should consider itself lucky to have a professor like this. Recieved his PhD from Berkeley! Is a walking encyclopedia... Very challenging class but he makes the student a better writer, reader, and student. I can't recommend him enough... Also is not biased like some professors. Gives the facts and lets the student decide.

Brilliant professor. Tries to make you think about what you believe in, but doesn't want you to simply believe what he tells you. Funny, open, and fair. People who give him low scores probably did not attend his class for long or didn't do the work.
GREAT professor!!!! He does first give the impression as a hardass but that is simply to ween out the weak. what you learn in this class is something you will take with you forever. RCC needs more educated and creative teachers like him!!! highly reccomended
We are so lucky to have a teacher of this calibre here! He really wants to make you think about your beliefs and is more interested in what you understand about the assignments, than what facts you can spit out on a test. In fact, there are no tests, it's all writing papers. If this sounds easy, it's not. He expects you to read and think.
I was into politics before this class, but after words... I'm changing my major to poli sci.
He makes his students think about politics in a good way. He class is very interesting. This class is not boring and time goes by so fast. I recommend people to take this class.
Instructor is great! Class is based on readings and writing papers. He is extremely helpful and is open to nay questions. He loves participation and gets anal when it comes to format. However, he is very clear and does this while maintaining a sence of humor. I recommend this class but if you suck at writing... well good luck!
Dr. Sellick "Cares" about what he teaches. One of the top 3 teachers I've ever had. Writing is mandatory. His style of teaching is informative, passionate, interactive and beleive it or not "FUN". On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being best, I rate him a 9 because nobody is perfect. I really enjoy his class.
Sellick is awesome. Never had a teacher as engaging and fun as he is. He takes one of the most boring subjects you can think of, and makes it very interesting, combining humor with his interactive teaching method. You can't be lazy if you want to do well, but the work you put into the class is definitely worth it.
Without question, one of the best teachers at RCC, and one of the best I've ever had. One of those professors that actually takes the time to learn your name, teach the material as it should be taught, and answer any questions you may have. Just make sure you have more than half a brain before taking this class--not a class you can sleep through.
Prof. Sellick is an excellent teacher. There is alot of reading and alot of writing. No test's. If your unclear about something he will explain it in a way everyone can understand. What makes this class hard, but rewarding, is all of the reading and writing. He tries to improve your writing abilities and is very fair in the process. Highly recommend
the best professor I have ever had. HE is so open minded and respectful and is really funny... He makes you think and to not go along with what people tell you and what society says but think for yourself and find out for yourself... HE wants his students to succeed..
One of the best professors I've ever had.
Very interesting class! Studied Supreme Court and current cases and history of US Law. Be prepared to write a lot and well! He is very helpful and works with his students to help them succeed. Class is conversational, rather than lecture based. Books were cheap too, which helps us "starving" students! Lots of online reading material to print.
I'm not sure why the recent commenter is complaining. That person got a C, probably due to not paying attention or doing the work. Dr. Sellick works hard to teach his students to learn how to write, think and consider politics. If you don't think he is attractive, that's fine. If you don't think the class is worthwhile, you are likely lazy.
Another high rating for Professor Sellick. He made the class (and politics) interesting. He is accessible and wants the students to grasp the concepts so questions are good. Lots of reading and writing and he wants the writing to be well done. It was a lot of work but a very good class thanks to him. Much of the reading was from his RCC website.
I wouldn't take this guy if i were you, he had me doing all of the work and failed to let me know that he dropped me during the begining of the semester. I did all of his work and he graded every paper, but never told me he dropped me.
Yes, beware of him: he may drop students who have missed 5 class meetings. This may be really unfortunate for a student who has failed to keep track of his or her absences, or has failed to read the syllabus. Such a student would be surprised. So be sure to read the syllabus - which is online, read to you, and given to you the first day.
My fav instructor I've had yet. His lectures are very elaborate and beneficial. Funny guy too.
I was unsure how this class would go on the first day. He began by telling everyone if you do not like to read or write it was the wrong class for you and he definitely meant it. There are 2-4 readings each week which can vary from 2 to 17 pages each. Papers can be difficult because of obscure questions but he's quick to answer any questions.
This is a difficult class. He is a very fun and often funny professor, but he does demand good writing and consistent reading. Don't get behind and be prepared to work. He often states that this is a "college class" and he means it.
His class is not that hard, but you have to do the work. The cool thing about his class is the midterm and final were take home.
What everyone has said is true. He's a great prof, but very demanding. If u are a procrastinator u should definitely think twice about taking him
Sellick is super clear with what he wants from you, and he is always willing to help you out. He wants his students to succeed, even if you may not believe it at times. I'd take every class that he teaches.
I took Sellick for Political Science after hearing great things, and I can testify that all are true! Yes it is true that Sellick can be tough, but that's because he takes the learning seriously. And believe me, you learn! Awesome class and awesome teacher. Just be respectful and on-the-ball.
Awesome teacher. Had a politics class and Proff Sellick made the class more than fun. He is strict about his rules but they are not hard to follow. Do what he asks and you will do a good job. Proff Sellick turned a class i was dreading into a fun class. Would highly recomend to anyone who has the opportunity to take a class for pre-reqs.
Best professor I've had at RCC, and I've taken 90 units! Challenging, but very helpful and very intelligent. He does a good job of presenting equal and fair sides of an argument, which is rare in any pol sci class. You usually get some radically biased agenda, and he tries hard to avoid that.If you do what he asks you will pass and be wiser for it.
Very smart professor, funny and generally unbiased. He is not interested in teaching an "agenda" as much as he wants his students to think critically about their own lives.
Dr. Sellick is one of the most helpful professors that I have ever had. He will go out of his way to make sure that you understand the subject, readings, and assignments. He keeps classes interesting and understands what students need from him. All of the work done is writing; no tests of any kind.
Awesome teacher, fascinating subject matter. He is witty and interesting. Despite the difficulty of the material, and rigorous standards, it's a pleasure to take one of his classes. We are very lucky to have him.
He is an awesome teacher!!! One of the best ones I've had at RCC. He goes beyond to make sure his students understand the material. I enjoyed the discussions and the effort he demonstrated to make us see the politics through the philosphical and unbiased view... responsible and reliable...loved the class!!
Dr. Sellick is the most intelligent person I have ever met. I got an A in his class, but it was difficult. There's a new lesson to be learned with every lecture. If you're a PoliSci major, don't miss out! Take him!! :]
it was a hard class since there was tons of writing and a lot of reading. It was a hard class to do in the summer even with 3 classes. Dr. Sellick was a good and fun teacher though. You should take him for political science! Be warned: loads of writing and reading!
Brilliant professor, but assigns a lot of writing. He really does not give that much reading, but some of it is hard to understand. He will explain it, though, if you ask. He rocks...other people's socks.
Very smart professor who assigns a lot of writing. Be prepared to work. He is pretty funny, but don't be rude.
He will help you if you have questions, but you have to ask them or else he won't know. YOU MUST KEEP UP with the READINGS! Or else you will not know what is going on. IT can be very CONFUSING! I went into this class expecting to hate it, and I learned a lot. Great teacher!
He's clear and concise, and will help you if you ask. It's pretty important that you do the readings ahead of time, or else you'll be twiddling your thumbs in class without any questions to ask. Classes are primarily discussion based. One of the few teachers that recognizes Pastafarianism. RAmen.
ALOT of writing and i mean ALOT. Class is confusing did NOT understand one bit of it. His sarcasm can be annoying
He's such an intelligent man. You need to keep up with the readings and try to gain a grasp of what's going on. If you have questions, ask them in class. He's there to answer/help you understand. Lots of writing, but that's what I loved about this class. Class is discussion based. When you do the readings and actually understand what he's saying, i
Professor Sellick is that type of instructor that you need in college. He challenges you to think, while at the same time treating you like an adult. The class is easy if you simply do the reading.
he is a very good teacher. He broadens your way of thinking and gives you good readings. YOu have to read ahead of time so that you dont end up reading and doing all of the midterms at the last second! overall this was a great teacher and good class
GREAT PROF! brilliant mind and he creates a great college atmosphere in his classroom. class is INTENSE, but enjoyable. great subject matter, he really pushes students to engage in active critical thinking and is always available to lend a helping hand. a lot of work and reading, not for those looking for an easy A, but def. recommended for all!
He will push you; that is what he wants to do. He is very smart and very demanding. Get ready to deal with him.
He is very smart and he really wants you to learn. There is a lot of reading and writing. If you do the work, you should be fine. If you are lazy and lame, you will not do so well. Just don't blame him if you don't want to perform.
Great teacher but be ready to put in work! Do not take this course if you have no interest in politics because you have to do a ton of reading! However, if you are interested this course will introduce you to a lot. I liked it but then again i am a poly sci major.
Oh, come on. Giving 1s to Sellick? Are you kidding? He is one of the best professors at RCC. He is hard, but be reasonable.
He is a great professor! There is lots of reading to do, but he makes the class interesting by talking about current issues that I have never even thought about. Hardwork is the key to a good grade and make sure you do everything. He seems intimidating but he is more than happy to help.
He thinks he is an English teacher and grades papers more on how he wants it formatted, rather than what your saying. Lots of papers and even if you average a B+ on the assignments the class is set up so that you'll get a c.
The people who bash Sellick seem to be complaining about the same thing; they got bad grades. Shouldn't you all think about whether you actually read or studied? Is it really his fault you did badly? He demands a lot of work, but tells you this every day of class. He explains your grade and tells you what you need to do.
This is getting a little lame. Professor Sellick does not grade you on format. He does not even have a page minimum. He taught writing at UCI so he kinda is a English teacher. He is really demanding, but he is fair and does not set anyone up for a grade. You get the grade you earn.
He is a really good teacher opens your eyes to a lot of things going on in the world and how they are relevant today. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT when you write your papers and especially the mid term. do not take this class if you dont like to read because you will read A LOT!oh and do the extra credit outline!!!!
OMG!! This professor has been one of the most difficult EVER!! He's brilliant; however, he expects the same from his community college students. He expect nothing less than graduate work! LOTS & LOTS of reading and papers due here, there, everywhere! This course is definitely not an introductory to Amerian Politics!
I took his online class this summer and was not impressed. A friend of mine suggested I take his class because of great discussions, but maybe the class just wasn't the same online. I ended up doing fine in the class, but I did not enjoy it, and I am usually very interested in politics.
I am not certain that he is "God's gift", but he is a very good professor and is pretty fair. Be prepared to read and write.
I definitely learned a lot in this class. It's a challenging class, but it is worth all the work. His discussions are eye-opening. He exposes the class to different perspectives. I recommend taking his class if you're ready for work and knowledge.
The course is pretty hard if you take it online. He does give Power Points and other stuff to help, but you really have to be motivated to do a lot of work. It is probably better to take the class face-to-face, but it is interesting.
Before taking this class, I didn't even know the difference between Democrats and Republicans. Professor Sellick not only made the class interesting and comprehensible, but I actually looked forward to class. Honestly, the class is difficult but he made it enjoyable. Best teacher I've ever had by far.
coolest teacher ever
I'll be honest... I thought he was a pretentious jerk at first but by the end of the semester I really liked him. He assigns a ton of writing so I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't taken Eng 1A. He grades the papers with notes so it is clear where you went wrong. He doesn't really lecture but has class discussion instead. I can say I learned a lot in this class and got an A!
I got an 'A' but i feel i should have gotten an B. I slacked off, he is a hard teacher. I learned a lot and now think different and write better. He is probably one of my best teachers ever!!
The online class requires a lot of effort (reading/writing)but doable. The Prof. and subject matter are interesting. If taking online, keep up with readings, go to the chats, FOLLOW HIS FORMAT and you're gold. He outlines everything you need to do, there are no surprises. Great teacher, but you definitely need to work for the grade. Great class.
Great professor all together. He's willing to bend backwards to help you out. If he sees you improving in the writings that he assigns in class, then your grade will improve. It's a class in which you learn a lot about current issues, and it's not a bore. In all, he's a funny and chill dude! There should be more professors like him.
Great political science professor. Probably the best at RCC. Definitely a great professor who loves his work.
He will make u write more than any English instructor at RCC =/There is a lot of reading so be prepared!!
Like everyone else has said, Professor Sellick can be pretty tough and assigns a lot of writing. I am getting a lot out of the class, though.
Professor Sellick is one of the best professors I've ever taken. While you have to work hard for your grade, he helps you on every step of the way. He is also very passionate about what he teaches. Even political theories he doesn't agree with - such as fascism or liberalism - he makes persuasive and interesting. Must take for poli sci majors.
He is brilliant, engaging and funny. Why can't other professor be like him? I loved being in his class and it all seems to be improvised. Genius.
I took this class online. It was a real pleasure. He was clear with what he wanted and provided examples. He was entertaining in online chats and grades on a curve with all of the online classes, which was very helpful. A lot of difficult reading, but it was entertaining and provided different points of views. I would definitely take him again.
From the start he told us that there was going to be a lot of reading and that lead many people to drop and the class. His class is very hard and consists of a lot of integrated and conceptual papers and requires you to use the text or book frequently. He grades harder than most and isn't very helpful in my opinion and I dislike his teaching method
Professor Sellick does tell his students that the class will be difficult, that it is based on essay writing and will require students to do work. If you do not want to do college-level work, don't take his class. I actually like his teaching style, though he can come across rather as harsh sometimes.
Favorite professor at RCC! Liked him so much, I took him twice (Law/Theory). No tests, but lots of papers based on various political texts (Court decisions, political philosophers). Work is balanced by the obvious passion he has in his lectures. If you can survive Schinke's 101 class, Sellick will reinvigorate your interest in politics
Anyone who actually has taken Dr. Sellick’s classes and has come to the conclusion that the professor was assigning propaganda probably was not paying attention to anything but Fox News. Dr. Sellick offers critical appraisals of the United States government, which he leaves up to the students to accept or reject on the merits.
I am not certain why the POL 11 was taken down, but Professor Sellick does expect you to know the work before showing up to class. Do not try and "wing it" or he will rip your argument to shreds. He also assigns interesting readings across the political spectrum.
Take the time to read every reading carefully and take notes on the reading as well. Also, make ample time for the integrated essays.
Professor Sellick will definitely keep you interested in all the materials being read. Most definitely, make sure to read!! Lectures are more like discussions so participation is important. Overall a fun class, especially if politics interests you. No expensive textbook! And it covers the requisite for all UC schools.
The class is interesting, but hard. If you have not read anything related to theory, it will be particularly rough on you. I have already read Plato, so I enjoyed his take on Republic. It is different from other people's interpretations. Generally fun class - he can slip into ideologies and be convincing about them - but it is tough.
Although attendance is not mandatory I say go. You need the class discussions to help you write your papers. Sellick is fantastic! He's hard, but if you do your readings on time and take the time to talk to him about them you will succeed. I had no interest in POL-1 before taking the class, and it ended up being my favorite class!
This teacher thinks that he is teaching a higher level English course, when in fact it is an entry level course. He grades very harshly and is not very prompt about emailing back. I have a 3.7 GPA and this is the very first class I have ever dropped do not take him!!
As a former student of Dr. Sellick's, I feel compelled to defend his approach. I got in to UCLA, in part because of the rigorousness of his course. He taught me how to be a more effective, more concise writer and a different way of thinking about politics. I know that taking the class is harder when done online, so only take him if you are prepared
Greatest Professor 5ever!
To summarize this professor, allow me to quote William Arthur Ward: "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." Inspiration is only one of many gifts that Professor Sellick provides his students. This is not an easy "A," but knowledge has never been an easy enterprise.
Excellent teacher. His grading system seems harsh; however, you will be surprised to get a good grade at the end. He is on chat two times a week, so you can ask him any question. Very helpful teacher. Strongly recommend him.
If you take his class seriously, you will absolutely leave Sellick's class as a better writer, critical thinker, and time manager. Professors like him really prepare you for grad school. There's no room for slacking here, read the articles and the text before class and be prepared to discuss them.
Best professor and best class I have ever taken. Dr. Sellick really challenges and encourages you to become a better writer and a comprehensive learner. Class is not an easy A, but his teaching style and helpfulness makes up for it. He is funny, and really cares about his students. I enjoyed his class so much, I took Pol. Theory with him also.
He's a great teacher! Fall of 2013 was my first semester and I already know that he will be among the most enlightening professors I will have throughout college at RCC. His expectations are fair. They are that you do enough work/studying to understand the text and to complete the assignments, which were two page comprehensive essays.(poli theory)
Professor Sellick is a really nice and well educated Professor. The class was tedious. However, he is very helpful and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his students understand the material. I received a B in the class and think I would have done a lot better taking him in Spring. He talked me out of dropping and I am glad he did.
Professor Sellick will challenge you to read and write critically. He teaches at a university level so don't take this class under the assumption that you'll be getting multiple choice tests for the semester. He expects you to analyze the texts as well as argue a specific point. Down to earth and will help you think from different viewpoints.
He is a very good professor and assigns interesting readings. You have to be ready to work a lot in the online class, so don't take it if you have not done well in English 1A and need help. He is very smart and very helpful, but you will not do well if you are not ready for the course. Be warned.
This class is just about over, although there is still some material to cover. Probably the most knowledgeable professor on campus, never at a loss when asked a question. The class is hard because it requires that you comprehend abstract and fundamental concepts, but the knowledge gained far outweighs receiving an easy A.
Honestly I would have received a grade if I had put more effort in my papers. There are a couple papers all responses to articles or documents that have affected American history. Lots of reading and there's plenty of time to ask questions and draft. Don't wait till the last minute or you'll get the same grade I did. Take him!
Mark is pretty cool. Makes the dry readings a little less dry. By the way don't call him Mark he hates that. He doesn't wear shoes, so if you want a teacher who wears shoes takes someone else. In all seriousness he is a very brilliant professor, and I would highly recommend taking him. He ain't easy though so your GPA may take a hit.
He takes forever to post an assignment online. Im taking his hybrid class and we have one final essay to do and i have been checking day after day for him to post the prompt. Im getting very annoyed. I just want to finish the class already
A word about Professor Sellick's assignments from another student taking the hybrid class. He told us on Monday he would post the prompt. He posted it on Tuesday. Can't see how it is possible to be waiting "for days" for this. And I love his class.
He is a brilliant professor, but this is not an easy class. His goal is to develop his students' ability to think critically and to write clearly. Worthwhile, but difficult compared to most RCC classes.
Brilliant professor, difficult class.
Professor Sellick wants his students to succeed. He gives good feedback on papers and learning to write a paper the way he instructed helped me on papers for other classes. Great class and lectures. Occasionally gets off topic but is usually worth it.
Professor Sellick is funny. He gives short lectures for his online class and you can tell he is hilarious in person. He gives good feedback on papers, but the class is difficult. The class has six papers - three short and three long. Be ready to do work.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lectures given by professor Sellick. He likes to communicate in a conversational class room style (sits on a table and talks to us not at us), which offers a comfortable setting that encourages meaningful conversation. Sellick is a good communicator, and he welcomes your political opinions. I'd take him again!
Professor Sellick is the coolest professor you will ever take at RCC. He is very opinionated, but entertaining. He hardly has homework, but when you do have it, it will be very time consuming and you will have to work for that good grade. Other than that, he is super awesome. Btw, he cusses a lot, but its funny.
I enjoyed failing his class. I am a political science major and this has been the hardest best class I have ever taken. His lectures are amazing and doesn't just read off the powerpoint. His papers are a pain in the ass. You learn a lot not necessarily about politics but how to write better and be a better student.
One of the best professors I've had at RCC. His criticism is constructive and reasonable. He really wants you to improve as a critical thinker, and you're not expected to simply regurgitate information. He really values participation. As long as you spend time on the papers, they aren't bad. He's a very flexible instructor in regards to attendance.
I am currently taking his hybrid class. The first papers are pretty rough and graded a little harshly, but he clarified what he expects and how he is willing to look at the assignments. He is pretty funny and goes off on interesting tangents, but always comes back to the work. So far, so good.
If you don't want to be challenged, don't take this class. He does his job extremely well, but he doesn't put up with nonsense or whiners who want an easy A. That said, he sucks with time limits, and will often grade your papers late and push back deadlines. He does this more for the benefit of the student, but it can be exhausting.
This class is not to be taken lightly. You're going to have to study, participate, and be an active learner but it will all pay off in the end. He has a passion for teaching and ensuring the growth of his students. He grades tough, but that's because he knows the material (and student habits) inside and out. Awesome professor!
Overall, Prof. Sellick is a good teacher. He is articulate in explaining course material. If you're a solid writer and participate you should be fine. If writing is not your strong suit you may want to work with him to improve your essay scores. He does bash Republicans semi-regularly, which can be annoying to some, but he seems to grade fairly.
So, I think he thought I wrote a review for him, but I didn't. So here it goes, so far a very good professor. I know more now about American politics then when I started this semester, so that's a good thing right? He manages to add humor to his lectures, which makes learning easier. Lots of reading, but what do you expect from a politics class?
Professor Sellick is one of my favorite Professors. The only thing that makes his class difficult is you by not doing the reading. If you read the material and are thoughtful when writing you will do fine. He does not just dish out the required information, he really cares that you improve your writing skills as well as how to retain stuff.
If you want an easy class skip him, but if you want an academic challenge and plan to transfer to 4 year take him. I learned a lot about writing good papers from Sellick.
Dr. Sellick does expect you to write like a university student; like a student who has completed freshman composition ENG 1A. This is because his classes transfer to a university. Yeah. He tells us this at the beginning of the class and every time we get papers back. He has given me a lot of feedback and explains grading in detail.
Dr. Sellick lecture are decent but go's on a rant like it is nobody business. Grading cubic is somewhat unclear but still passable. If you take this teacher, do not take lightly!
Honestly, Sellick is great, hes super straightforward about his classes, I recommend him if you actually want to learn something. Hes beyond a tough grader, nit picks everything he can and questions if something doesn't look right in your papers. The guy really knows his stuff though..
Took him over the Spring 2015. Not an easy class, but he is a great teacher. You will learn a lot from his lectures and he cares about his students. He gives great feed back.
Sellick's class is pretty hard, particularly online. The readings are interesting - I always wanted to read something from Malcolm X - but the workload is difficult if you do not like writing. The load is doable, but you really have to do a little bit every day. Don't wait until the last minute. Trust me!
Professor Sellick's class has helped me the most as an Honors students. Reading is a must for his class and he values those who can demonstrate that through particapation. The texts at times can be dense, but they are extremely intriguing. He has a good sense of humor as evident with his lectures. I highly recommend him for all Honors students.
Political theory is a tough class, one you should not take if you are taking English 1A or 1B. There are five or six short papers and two long ones. The reading is a little heavy and dense, though I enjoyed Plato. The class discussions can be interesting, though too many people don't do the reading, which is typical at RCC.
I took online Political Science with Dr. Sellick last semester. He is AWESOME! Writing the papers for this class was actually fun, can't believe it. He gives great feedback and has worksheets that say EXACTLY how the paper is to be written, which format to follow. One of the best teachers I've ever had! :)
I loved Proffesor Sellick's class. It was pretty tough and the grade is based off of 6 papers(3 short, 3 medium), but he has an EXACT format for you to follow. His classes consist of class discussions, him answering your questions, and him relating politics to Star Wars lol. Just try and you'll pass. I would deffinetly take him again!
I enjoyed his lectures. He is a good guy but terrible at getting grades back to you & his grading is crazy! It was more of an English class rather than Poli Sci. I definitely learned a lot about current politics, so that's a plus. But the 6 essays were at most times irreverent to lectures & I never received my grades for 3 of the essays.
A bit of a smartass but a great professor who communicates passion about his field and cares about his students and is frequently willing to work with them. He's a little harsh on the grading and is not the most prompt in returning scores, but the quality of commentary he makes on papers does make sense that it takes him a while. Would recommend!
Teaches you how to write essays at college level. Lots of reading. Feels kind of like an english class rather than a political science class. Make sure to use your time management correctly in his class. Other than long essays and heavy reading, he is pretty funny and entertaining. I now feel way better about my writing skills then I did before.
This is the second class i've taken with Sellick, beyond incredible professor. The entire class is based off essays so there is a lot of reading and writing, hes pretty good about answering questions but not responding to emails or getting papers back fast, he takes his time, but other than that, pretty incredible.
Assigned 3 essays that were about 7 pages long each and 2 papers a page or two long. We had discussions on the chapters and topics and he always kept the class interesting. He really gets into the topics in the book and just politics in general. I think I improved in writing and summarizing (which is a hard thing for me). Glad I took his class.
Best Political Science professor. However, if you don't do the readings his class will certainly be a challenge. Take your time on the papers, read his tips on how to write the papers, and ask any questions you have. Prepare to read all reserved readings. The readings are dense, so be prepared and come to class with questions. Participation matters
During the course of the semester he expects you to write 6 one page papers and 2 6-8 page papers. while this seems like an easy task he bases it off of the reading and if you don't write his opinions in the papers you write he docs you off, It was honestly harder than my English classes. if you want and easy class do not take him.
Dr. Sellick does not require his students to write papers that reflect his opinions or anyone else's. This is not how he structures his political theory class or any other class. Indeed, he expressly tells students that the papers are expository and should have no opinion articulated in them. His class is hard but opinions do not matter.
Do the assigned reading and leave your opinions out of the expository papers. He gives you an example paper so that you can get an idea of what his papers should look like. If you have a question, make sure you at least know what you're talking about before you ask. Overall, class wasn't too difficult once I got the hang of what he expects from us
Horrible Feedback! So rude when you ask questions during his office hours
Professor Sellick helped me get into Berkeley. I always found him to be incredibly helpful and his classes were very important for my writing development. I encourage students to take his classes, but be prepared to work.
Hes funny but is a good educator. Just pay attention in class and youll pass
Due to POL1 being general ed, Professor Sellick chose to focus on teaching useful writing skills rather than pushing the major of Political Science. Even so, he gives great insight into politics and past events. If you value your education, take him. Otherwise, there are other teachers that push memorizing from cookie-cutter textbooks you can try
Very funny professor, makes you work very hard for your grade but pushes you in a positive and inspiring way, would definitely recommend.
Class seemed to be focus more on writing than politics.
Professor Sellick's class is geared toward writing. He states this on the first day of class and every day afterward. He wants students to develop a meaningful academic skill as well as an understanding of the subject matter. Strange how someone could offer this as a criticism, unless they were not paying attention.
Last and final class with Sellick - best professor at RCC hands down. Always willing to help and lead you in the right direction.
Sellick is awesome. He takes his job seriously but he also makes lecture fun. He gets a bad rep on here because people don't like his bluntness; they see it as him being rude when he's not rude at all. He actually cares about the success of his students, which is why he grades the way he does; he's preparing students for what universities expect.
He truly wants you to succeed in his class. You need to put in effort and he will meet you half way. The class is graded on your writing but again he will help you. If you're looking for a class heavily about politics you wont find it here.
First, I would like to emphasize how caring and helpful he is with his students. He truly wants his students to succeed and become better writers. If there are any questions you have or if you need any help, he is very easy to talk to, and please do not be hesitant to visit during his office hours. Also, he has an awesome-possum music taste. 10/10
Best teacher. Cares about the student understanding than the grade. There is a lot of writing, but he gives out excellent feedback. I felt comfortable with him and he is honest (makes him awesome). wants us to understand what the writers are saying in the articles. And he wants us to research instead of crediting his opinion without looking into it
amazing professor! very funny guy and definitely looked forward to attending his classes. If you do not like writing this is not a class for you. he states that the first day of class! he is very straight forward in what he expects from his students. class consist of pure essays. Put effort in your papers! that is what he looks for.
I have had him for more than one class and while his papers are harshly graded, he would rather have you understand and analyze the content rather than just having you repeat what he says. Hard class but worth it, especially if you are a political science major.
I will agree that Professor Sellick's classes are difficult. He tells us regularly about how hard the class can be, particularly if you do not do the work on time. I found this out quickly after the first big assignment. But he does not fail people unless they do not do the work. If you do nothing and think you will pass, you won't.
He is a great professor, but has high expectations for his course. Though I wouldn't blame him, he DID graduate from Berkeley and won't fail to tell us any chance he gets.
Sellicks expectations are too high! Dont let the high rate fool you, this class is difficult to pass.
If you don't want to work (readite) RUN, but take if you want an engaging class. I personally did not like politics before taking the class but I do now and I got used to writing a lot. He tells you that his class is challenging and it is, but worth taking. Just don't take if you want an easy A to add to your G.P.A.
Dr. Sellick ia a wonderful professor and I loved the political discussions we had in this class. MAKE SURE YOU PARTICIPATE in discussion as the percentage is much of your final grade. Dr. Sellick grades hard on the first conceptual paper, but only to better your writing skills and usage of primary sources, so don't be scared.
He has unrealistic standards and purposely gives out worse grades. There is literally no way to please him. I read all the material, never missed a day, turned in every assignment on time, and participated largely in class discussions and STILL he was never happy with any of my work. He is impossible and is a classroom despot! IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS!
I don't think he has unrealistic standards. What I experienced was good feedback on my papers and useful ideas about how to write. When he told us the average grade in the class for any large paper, it was around a B-/C+. He is harsh on the small papers, but he tells us why. The best thing to do in his class is listen and work.
Ive given Prof. Sellick the benefit of the doubt but grading your 1st paper intentionally low is not a good way to motivate you to write better. Students failed to gauge how they are doing because he only gave C. By the 4th paper, the class avg. was still C. He claims to help students write but gave no clear advice on how. No one passed with an A.
Professor Sellick is is great guy in person, but as a teacher he is a tough grader and makes the questions he asks in his assignments too difficult. His class is doable, but you need to have the time to READ READ READ. Take notes too. I honestly don't know if I'll pass. His class is probably one of the hardest I'll take at RCC. I just need to pass
I'm currently taking his POL 1 class. before taking Sellick's class, if you want to take an easy class to get political science out of the way, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, he even tells you the first day that it is very work heavy and readings can be hard, but he is one of the best professors at RCC, your grade isn't given IT'S EARNED
If you don't like writing essays, then this class night but be for you. If you do however, add this class and learn from a cool professor. His grading is hard and it does take him a long while to give back our papers. He's respectful towards people's views. The class itself is not enjoyable one bit. Though Sellick is great, I wish I went elsewhere.
I came to the conclusion that you either really like him or you really don't. Unfortunately I'm one of those who don't. He assigned lots of essays with heavy readings, which I am okay with, but he grades really slow (takes him weeks!), and he grades hard. Maybe he is just blunt, but I found him quite condescending to his students. Take someone else
I enjoyed Professor Sellick's class. I can't say that I liked the first part, when we read about the Constitution, but the readings in the last part of the class were interesting. He was very forgiving on assignments and would move deadlines. He read in class. And, students still didn't do the work and complained. Standard RCC.
I feel that there are too many papers in this class and it is hard to keep up with it along with other classes but Sellick was entertaining. He is also willing to help, and give you more time on assignments. He grades fair and gives good feedback. I did better than i thought. Do the work and you pass. I would take him again.
-Great feedback, but don't take it personally, because it can be "harsh." -Take heed of his feedback; it will get you a better grade on future papers -Participate! It could make the difference between a B & C; or B & A; etc. -Keep your answers to his prompts short and sweet. Like, as in, bare bones answers. -Take him to become a better writer
I took Political Science during the summer of 19. He is without a doubt the most inspirational instructor Ive ever had. The class was a little hard with us having to do a couple long essays but he walked us through them and made it easier for us. After this class I turned into a politics geek and obsessively follow the news now. I highly recommend
If your looking for an easy pass, don't take this professor. I took him during the winter and we had three 8 page essays and two 2 page essays. The class is very difficult if you havent taken english 1a, or aren't a good writer. He is also a very tough grader.
Sellick's class can be difficult. The readings are NOT easy, so ask lots of questions in class. He will walk you through tough sections and is willing to help. I probably could have gotten an A, but I was swamped with work. Don't wait to the last minute to write the papers. Trust me.
I took this class in winter and I was miserable!!! The articles he assigns you to read are extremely difficult to understand!! There were 6-7 writing assignments, 2 of them were 5+ pages and the rest were about 2 pages. Hes a really nice guy, but the assignments were insane! I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone.
I took this class in winter. He tells us up front that it is going to be rough at points and that it will go fast. He is not kidding. The most difficult section of the class was when we went through Constitution. Stay up on the readings and ask lots of questions. He will read the assigned essays in class if you ask him. Participation is key.
The class is pretty hard, but doable. Don't wait until the last minute to do the readings because they can be pretty tough. ASK QUESTIONS! He will help if you ask for it. If you don't like writing, this is not the class for you. I like to write and this class helped me.
Professor Sellick was a good professor. He talked to me and gave me feedback because he wanted me to learn the proper way. There are a lot of papers, he is picky when you rite them. It was like an English class all over again. Overall, show up work hard and he will give you the grade you earn. He does drop the lowest paper. So try your best.
I had him when I was a sophomore in High School, he was amazing, and overall awesome professor, first college class I took was his and I honestly would take it again!
very very very tough grader.. rubric is not clear.. i was in a group chat with 20 other students who were just as confused. dont take him smh.
Dr. Sellick's class is difficult, but doable. I am currently taking the class, and he has constantly modified his expectations and deadlines in order to better serve students. The course is heavy on writing, but he explains everything and has multiple documents that offer tips. If you don't like to write, this is probably not the class for you.
I did not find Professor Sellick's class to be that hard. He does not assign a lot of reading and there is no expensive textbook. Most of the readings are free on PDF. There no exams, only essays. Watch the videos on how to do well in the class and you should be fine.
Taking his course during corona virus worse thing ever! All of my other professors were so nice and lenient giving what we are all going through at this time. While professor Mark would not even look at or grade something I turned in one day late. Do not take him if you are caring for sick family members or have a tight schedule.
Dr. Sellick is a professor who really holds you accountable for your work. His grading scale is different from most other professors but if you work hard and take his feedback you will do well. A professor who only wants to see his students succeed. Definitely recommend especially if you are a political science major.
I don't know what other students experienced in Professor Sellick's class, but in my class he was constantly reducing the workload, moving deadlines, and trying to help students during this pandemic. He personally worked with me to deal with issues that I was facing and he truly wanted me to do well. I think that is probably how is he is generally.
A OK professor. It is a lot of work to do and learn I this amout of time but he does care. If he gave less assignments and more time to do them I think I could do better. It is a good experience no matter what and I learned a lot. I would tell anyone to take this class unless they want to sit back and get an A, that will not happen! It is worth t
Professor Sellick is an intense but very nice teacher. His class seems pretty difficult at first and it is easy to get discouraged. Don't be. Read his tips and his rubrics, ask him questions, and go to the Zoom discussions if you can. He will explain everything to you and do what he can. He is there to develop your reasoning and academic skills.
took this class during winter semester of the pandemic, he was very understanding of our situations and recorded every zoom lecture so it would be accessible later. u do have to read and write a lot, but it's very structural and he's clear on what u need to do. no final exam, instead it was an extra credit essay. really awesome prof
I was lost the entire time. I believe he has a doctorate. He spokes using such huge unfamiliar words that I just couldn't understand or keep up with what he was talking about. And the readings were not forgiving either! Nice guy, but I did not do well in this class.
I don't want to sound like I am a fanboy, but the man is brilliant. He takes complicated concepts and puts them into everyday language. He made me want to study political theory. I mean, who would do that, study political theory? Apparently me.
Not impossible but a pain in the ass sometimes, I am not a political science major, I am economics, so this class wasn't easy to adjust to. But if you stick with it you'll get the hang of it. Recorded zoom meetings, very enthusiastic but easy to get lost.
I took him a while ago but I would definitely suggest taking him ! He was so fun ! I really enjoyed going to his lectures , I did my best , and professor Sellick definitely understood and saw that ! 10/10 !
Dr. Sellick has been a nightmare, He gives a few assignments through out the semester but gives zero to very little feed back on assignments not nearly enough to help you grow as a student or to help you succeed in his class. He does not respond to emails and grades his assignments 1 month after they are due. I would not recommend him at all.
I have a different take on Dr. Sellick's political theory class. It did take him a while to get one of the assignments back, but he holds a lot of hours, offers good feedback (at least on my papers), and goes out of his way to move deadlines to help his students. He has offer me a LOT of feedback and has set up an hour just to meet with me.
Took professor Sellick during summer and there was a lot of reading and writing to do. He moved deadlines and gave extra credit papers which was good but took forever to grade essays and answer emails. Hes a tough grader too. Make sure you dont procrastinate in this class!
Not gonna lie i struggled esp during Constitution sect. I took it this summer, 3 short papers (1-2pg) & 3 long papers (4-6pg) but he drops the lowest grade from each+gives ec which helps a lot! I wanted to drop the class bc the readings were difficult and he took forever to grade! But he does give great feedback and is nice but SUPER TOUGH GRADER!
I took Dr. Sellick during Spring 21. He does take some time to get work back to students, but he provides lots of feedback and opportunities to improve. In my class, he gave an extra credit essay that helped me out a lot. He grades the short papers closely, but is generous on the bigger papers. I learned a lot.
Dr. Sellick is probably the best professor on campus, period. Even though all the assignments are essays, he gives EC and drops the lowest grade. He's also hilarious and class discussions are always engaging. He clearly cares about his students and is very considerate of covid and personal life in general.
I took him for Pol-1 for the summer and I loved him! He makes you think out of the box and expects the best from you. His lectures and discussions were super helpful and hes willing to clarify any confusion. He would go above and beyond for us to pass the class. One of the greatest professors on the RCC campus.
This professor was literally the worse one I had at RCC! I will not take his class again if I had to. The only reason I took his class was because of "Rate my professor" and I thought he would have been a great professor but I was wrong I would not recommend him. His assignments are not good.
I think you either love Professor Sellick or you really don't. I enjoyed his class immensely because of what I learned, particularly about Frederick Douglass and Dred Scott. You have to stay on top of the work, but he does give you many chances to do well. Don't slack and you should be fine.
I took Sellick's class and liked it. He has a lot of videos that explain the class and tell you about the assignments. He holds many Zoom hours where students can talk to him. I know because I went to a lot of them, but rarely saw anyone else. :-( He will help you if you need it.
First thing you need to know is he is a tough grader! I got like a 5 on my first paper. However, he does drop your lowest grade and I believe he curves it. There is a lot of reading to do and like 3 papers. I did struggle with the content of this class, but professor sellick is great and is always available if you need him. ask questions!
Prof. Sellick overall is wonderful, patient, and understanding. But he is very critical of hid expository papers. He is a tough grader. No one in class would ever get a perfect score. But he drops the worst graded short paper and positively weighs the 3 longer paper to your benefit. But be ready thoroughly make an argument, no cutting corners.
Great teacher, understanding of students and their situations. Willing to change deadlines and work for the benefit of the students. This semester was figuring out what the course would be so might change in the future but we used 3 textbooks total, no quizzes or tests. Also no final. Total of 3 small papers, 2 big papers, and 1 extra credit paper.
Professor Sellick grades mainly on how you write (like an English professor) rather than the subject you are writing about. He is a strong critic of students and judges only on your writing style, he was away most of the course and took 2 weeks to grade papers, the last 2 papers had no feedback. There are no tests just writing papers & reading.
I would give Professor Sellick a 100/5 If I could! Personally, I am not a political science major so the class was a bit of a struggle for me at first to understand the history of American Politics but he was very helpful whenever I or someone else was in class and was falling behind. It is definitely a challenging course but it is so worth it.
Sellick is great, taken him before and he's better in person but online he is still accessible and helpful. He is a tough grader on papers but curves each one to meet the class's overall scores. 3 small papers 2 big papers. Many people complained and didn't try to improve, but if you go to his OH, he will break stuff down and explain more to help.
Quite the tough grader, and grades mostly on writing structure than your actual answer to the prompt. One thing I really liked about him was how much time he gave us on papers. Made having multiple classes much less stressful.
The professor was very helpful and always had time for the students.
I really did try my hardest and try to meet his criteria. But unfortunately, he would give me a very low grade for my past few papers. He is very strict when it comes to writing your papers. He likes to have it in a specific way. But if you have struggles in writing papers, I don't recommend for you to take his class.
Almost every review here points out that this class is based on essays and he is a tough grader. Why would you take a class from him knowing this and after reading his materials which confirm this. And then complain to complain about it? Yeah. I liked the class, I got a lot out of it. But I did the work.
I'm a firm believer that the material can be fun even if you are not interested in the subject being taught. This is not the case for Mr. Sellick. The class seems to be more focused on writing, and less on American Politics. I have not learned a single useful thing so far. Extremely tough grader, wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Sellick can be a harsh grader at times and is extremely blunt when giving feedback, but he was a great professor. The class will go well if you ask questions, turn in your assignment days earlier to get feedback and read the textbooks. He allows late work and is free to talk after class. He also gives extra credit at the end of the semester.
Took Sellick's class over the summer and can tell you that it moves very quickly. Three short papers (about a page), two longer papers (about four pages each), and extra credit. He focuses on writing and building that skill along with explaining the history of the Constitution and those who have critiqued it. Good class, but no cake walk.
I gotta defend this professor. He lays everything out clearly in Canvas and on his syllabus. The only way you could not know what is happening or what we are assigned is if you don't pay attention. In my class he has sent us 26 separate announcements. He made videos that broke down the assignments. He moved office hours to accommodate students.
He went MIA for majority of the semester and changed the whole class criteria the last two weeks of the fall semester because all of the class was failing.
He is actually pretty nice. He had to change the examination format from papers to tests because too many students were using Chat GPT to write their papers. I preferred the papers, but I understand why he made the change. He is pretty forgiving, but you can't put off reading until the last minute. You won't understand what you are being asked.
Professor Sellick assigned three papers and after several students used AI to write their work, he changed to giving exams. He gave a midterm and extra credit. He gave everyone the best score they had gotten on either the papers or the exam. Might want to read the posts here and think about why certain people did poorly.
Professor Sellick is a great teacher, but throughout the semester it seemed like he was still trying to figure out his coursework which made it difficult for some students. Throughout the semester he only assigned 3 assignments and 1 exam which makes it difficult to redeem your grade if you fail anything. Great class but you have to pay attention.
This professor cares and is willing to assist you in passing this course. The material provided is difficult to understand and lots of reading will be required, but he replies in timely manners whenever help is requested and does his best to accomplish it. A great professor and would recommend to take his courses.
The class that I took was a hybrid class and I didn't even know until it was too late. This is not a communication error on his behalf but was my mistake. He is a very passionate teacher and speaks very clearly in ways anyone can understand. The class was genuinely fun at times and he really taught me to better understand American politics.
Dr. Sellick is a great professor, but when I took his online course, he was absent for long periods, affecting the class grades. We were only graded on a few things (3 papers and 1 final exam). The final exam was thrown randomly because of AI usage. He is a tough grader critiquing more on the writing style as if it were an English course. BEWARE!
Dr. Sellick is great, this course is one of his hardest but that's because of the theorist's works we read. He is reforming his classes to avoid chatgbt use so grades are based on ~ 4 quizzes and 2 exams. If you do badly on tests he weighs in your favor. If you show up every day and contribute, he considers that. Very accommodating & will miss him
There was a lot of reading and almost every question on the test was based on the readings. The test was a bit challenging but nothing unmanageable. His lectures were basically just telling us what we needed to pay attention to when reading. He also graded on a curve which moved my B to an A and he is goated for that.
Professor Sellick's POL1 class had a lot of reading, but his lectures were helpful in highlighting key points. The assignments were challenging, but he was flexible and willing to work with students. Using unstuck study and the free textbook made study prep a breeze.
If you're looking to learn anything useful, avoid this class. He spent lectures talking about how brilliant he thinks he is, with endless rants on his opinions and irrelevant stories. It felt like a desperate attempt to get attention rather than teach. He's more interested in hearing himself talk than educating. Total waste of time and money.
His lectures were mostly him talking about the peoples books we were reading and how much he liked the authors opinions. I think a lot of the stuff we did could have been done from home and listening to him talk for almost 2 hrs was too much. Definitely a sigh of relief when it was done.
Taking POL 1 with this professor. The class is more interesting than I thought it would be. There is a lot of focus on narratives and power and how these have been used over time. I like the Frederick Douglass reading because I did not know who he was before this class. I like it so far. Short quizzes and exams, participation is important.
Dr. S is an amazing professor and truly wishes his students all the success. There were 3 major exams split up by chapters of the textbook and he provides 3 extensive study guides. Plenty of time to complete the study guides if you pace yourself, same questions on the exams as on the study guide. Lectures are also engaging!
I found his lectures to be very engaging and learned a lot of about topics I had never thought I would be interested in. He is very flexible about attendance and understands that life sometimes gets in the way. There were 3 exams throughout the semester and a few quizzes, all which he provided thorough study guides for.
Grade comes from exams but they're not the worst. There was a ton of reading but I got through it. He actually cares about what you learn so he teaches you current and relevant information. He made me appreciate history for the first time during the module on Malcolm X, I learned so much. He is funny and wants you to genuinely succeed.
I took Political Science 1 with him and it immediately became one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. He makes lecture super interesting and has even almost persuaded me to change my major without ever even talking to him about that. He has respect for everyone as long as you respect him, you will read a TON but it is for your own benefit.
As long as you do the readings you'll be fine. A professor that you can tell really cares about what he's teaching, his job, and his students.
Wants you to succeed with an A in his class. Attendance was mandatory because I took his hybrid class. Participation was worth 20-25% of our grade, so yeah, show up! Gives quiz's/exams based on the readings and gives us questions beforehand. He wants us to understand and tries his best to break it down. Do all the assigned readings for that "A"!
I honestly Loved Professor.S ! amazing class, very funny and challenges minds, communicate! prepare to enjoy politics. I was very nervous but I wouldn't have had taken politics any other way.
I didn't read enough so I got c's on the quizzes, but they are also open book, so it's fully my fault. Lectures are nice to listen to, but only provided broad context for the era being discussed.
Dr. Sellick is a really kind and understanding professor. His class is pretty easy to follow, and his assignments are pretty clear. The quizzes and exams are self explanatory, and he genuinely cares about his students. I'm giving him a 4 only because the homework load is a lot, close to 100 questions a week. I just wish he'd break it down more.
Dr. S has been an amazing professor. For someone who has never really taken a politics class, I felt I was able to understand the material thanks to his lectures. He assigns a study guide for you to fill in, he gives plenty of time to finish it. Keep up with your work or if you have a circumstance in which you can't, Dr. S is very understanding.
This professor is an awesome professor, his modules are self-explanatory and simple to understand. He has video quizzes that grades on the spot with him lecturing. Please allow yourself the whole week to read the assigned readings as they can be pretty lengthy but if you complete the assigned readings, when you take the unit exams, you will pass.
