Great teacher, explains things very well and is a great resource for leagal information. He is a practiceing attourney and only teaches on monday nights. Great Professor.
AWESOME TEACHER!!!!! very helpful, gives weekly quizzes that are not extremely difficult, interesting lecutres
He thinks he is gods gift to the world. He doesn't like answering questions and is very snide and cocky. He speaks EXTREMELY FAST, which makes him hard to follow and hard to take notes for. Every quiz and the final is based on HIS NOTES. Only read the textbook for the cases. Doesn't respond quickly with email either. Poor teacher quality.
Probably the best teacher I have ever had. True, he tests based off of the notes, but his notes are often much more useful than the book.. You'll understand what I mean once you see the book.. Very helpful professor. Makes the material much easier to comprehend.
Great teacher!!!! Highly recommended.Gives easy examples to explain hard material. Make sure you take good notes. Very helpfull...
Very, very hard class. You *must* be descriptive when writing the rule of law applicable on quizzes, the correct rule of law just won't cut it. He will, however, help you out if you ask. Class was very interesting.
Great teacher. Loves his job, doesn't need to teach but he chooses to. He wants you to do well. Go to class, take notes, and study the notes 30 minutes before class starts and you will get atleast a B. Study for an hour and you will get atleast an A-. 2/3s of grade is based on 8 quizzes and 2 one page papers.
If you take this class seriously, you will learn the material -- period. Professor Shapiro helps you to not only understand the concepts of contract law, but also improves your technical writing capabilities. I highly recommend this class, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you want to learn business law, Dr. Shapiro is simply the best.
highly recommended !
Amazing teacher. I learned so much in this one class, it made me want to consider Business Law as a major. Great great great teacher. Not an easy class but definitely do-able.
Best teacher! Makes the class interesting and is very good at explaining. Memorize the laws and you will do fine on the quizzes. Final isn't the same one that all the other classes take so it's not as hard.
Great teacher. Very clear and engaging, drawing from extensive personal experience to illustrate the various topics. Very enjoyable class, makes the material relevant and interesting, definitely take him.
Definitely one of the best professors at UM. He truly cares about his students and makes a sometimes dry subject incredibly interesting. He is a full-time lawyer, so he directly relates personal experiences to book cases. I would highly recommend him for BSL 212, there are no surprises with his tests and if you study the material, you will do well.
Shapiro is the first and only teacher at the University of Miami who I truly respect. He is a successful and brilliant lawyer who teaches part time out of passion rather than necessity. He is clear, concise, fair, and helpful. Take his class and you will actually learn something. If you screw up this class then you are the problem, not him.
Extremely successful lawyer at Ackerman, cares genuinely about the students and preparing them for work/law school following graduation. As of this posting, I think his easiness rating is a bit low. The studying requirements aren't bad (for this class, BSL 212 requires studying) and the project was pretty easy to complete.
makes the class super interesting, definitely one of the better bel professors I've heard about
Easily one of my best profs. BSL can be trickyalot of memorizing but he makes it much easier! Very clear during class, uses students as examples, cracks some jokes, and is super nice. He's always at Starbucks on Sat. on campus for a few hours and is willing to talk. Tries to give you the best grade possible on each of the 8 quizzes.
Mr. Shapiro is an amazing teacher. Bus212 is not an easy class no matter who your teacher is, but he is a super smart guy who explains everything clearly and makes class interesting. I look forward to going to his class. It is not the easiest class, and you do have to study to do well, but he will help you if you need it.
Professor Shapiro is a nice funny guy. However, he talks too fast and he is a super HARD GRADER. My English teacher gave me B+ or A- all the time, even she is rated not easy teacher here. However, my two papers only got average 8.4. Quizses are hard, as a hard grader, he makes them harder. I tried hard, but still only can get a B I think. Harddddd
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Will make you want to show up to class, quizzes can be a little tough sometimes but if you pay attention you more than likely will do well. TAKE NOTES! Will make studying for quizzes much easier.
Maybe one of the best professors that I took at UM by now. Shapiro is hard but he is also a good and amazing human being. He makes you want to understand business law in order to understand what he is talking about. Go to class and take good notes. You will do just fine!
Best Professor I've ever had. Has non-mandatory attendance but you want to show up to class. Not an easy class, but certainly not the most difficult if you're willing to put the work in. Shapiro is super helpful and always willing to help his students. He's very humble given his success, I'm grateful for his role in my education.
He is a vey tough grader and offers little to no explanation as to why you received the grade you did. I would not take him again because even though the final is made by every teacher, he is the one who grades your class's final.
This is a required course for all business majors. This was his first time teaching this course. The test were hard because the powerpoints and books and common sense and test are not. Good luck. You'll still pass, but not with flying colors
Tough Grader... subject matter expert in Torts. Insurance Lawyer, his advice and lecture may help you seek counsel later in business transaction.
Professor Shapiro is probably the best teacher for BUS 101. He definitely knows the material really well and provides great examples during lectures. He is always engaged in class and really wants to know his students (he knew everyone's names in a 120 person lecture on the second day). The exams are difficult but the curve is helpful.
Dr. Shapiro is an excellent professor! He keeps students engaged and offers many opportunities to meet outside the classroom. As long as you participate and listen in class, you will do fine! I recommend for students to take this class and any class offered by him! He is one of the top professors at the University of Miami! Strongly recommend!!
He really knows what he is talking about and you can tell he cares about his students. He is hands down an amazing professor and anyone would be lucky to have him.
Professor Shapiro is one of the best assets the Miami Business School has to offer. He cares about his students, is an expert in his field, and also serves as the director of Undergraduate Career Resources. If you have the chance to, you should form a relationship with him, it should benefit you both in the classroom and down the road.
Dr. Shapiro is hands down my favorite professor at UM. He is a quintessential professor in and out of his field. I have taken him for 2 separate classes and never once felt bored during his lectures, he is engaging and exciting all while imparting so much knowledge on the students. additionally form a relationship with him he is an asset to have!
Shapiro is such a great man. He genuinely cares about the success of each of his students and will do anything to help them achieve that. He can be a tough grader and enjoys to argue with you (he used to be a lawyer), but overall he's one of my favorite professors.
He's a well respected teacher and very approachable outside of class. He's a tough grader and gives really good feedback. I'm a little hesitant to take him again as he is a little harder on minute details but he challenges you and you will learn a lot. Overall, a really good professor!
One of the best and most respected professors at the U. Great combination of gaining both admiration from the students while still being able to connect on a personal level. Highly recommend.
He's challenging, but challenging in the best way possible! He's very inspirational when he talks and teaches, and that's why he has near-perfect attendance for his lectures. Despite having so many students look up to him and respect him, he really goes out of his way to make you feel engaged and valued. Wish I could have him forever!
Professor Shapiro knows his stuff. He is really great at making the material comprehensive. It is really important to know the cases ahead of time so you can participate as well as starting the group project early/going to him with questions.
Shapiro is an entertaining teacher. He is very overrated he does not curve your grader and no extra credit. He is one of the few business school teachers who thinks being unnecessarily tough on grading will raise the school in rankings. Everyone likes his lectures but would you exchange entertainment for a higher grade elsewhere? Stay Away for an A
He's everyone's favorite Professor. His background in law is very inspirational and his lectures are enjoyable. Not an easy A, as there are quizzes and participation grades in addition to a major group project. His grading is also pretty fair, but every point matters. If you put in the work and don't treat it like an easy A then you'll be well off.
He's a tough grader but truly an amazing professor
Shapiro is a famous guy at Miami. He truly cares about each one of his students and tries to get to know them on a personal level. He always makes himself available and gives great advice. Likes to play devil's advocate, and it can get annoying. However, I know he's just trying to get people participating in discussions. As far as the class, easy
Prof. Shapiro is one of the best professors at UM. He doesn't only care about his students inside the classroom, but outside of it as well (despite my class being fully remote). The class is lecture heavy, hard, and sometimes confusing. But he is an entertaining lecturer, a lenient grader, and makes class always fun and interesting!
Fun, witty and very willing to accommodate questions and concerns. Tests can be difficult if you go in unprepared but otherwise they're fair.
Amazing professor! Teaches with examples to make everything easier to understand. Doesn't record lectures, so be ready to take good notes every class and DON'T SKIP or you'll be so lost. Tests aren't too difficult, but it's a good amount of memorizing/ studying. Very fun guy, all my homies love Mark Shapiro
Great Teacher, made class really entertaining and I learned so much from him. Would highly recommend him.
Professor Shapiro is a GEM. His lectures are extremely interesting. He expects a lot from students which makes his class difficult but fair. Lots of quizzes and papers; youll always have something to do. He is super accessible outside of class. He is one of those professors that leaves a lasting impact. If you can, do yourself a favor and take him
The professor is awesome and teaches super well! However, you are going to need to study a lot for quizzes. I recommend starting studying 2 weeks before the final exam because it requires a lot of memorization.
He is the best professor and this class was really helpful. Made resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and did mock interviews. Best class yet at the business school and he definitely knows what hes talking about.
Amazing professor, but NOT an easy one. He was a contract lawyer for 20 years and and you can tell he knows his stuff. I got an 80 and 77 on the first two quizzes because I didn't study. After that I made note cards for all the rules/terms and got 96-98 on the remaining quizzes. If you manage to get a spot in his class just make sure to study!!!
One of the best professors at this school. He managed to make business law interesting and he's a really good lecturer, all the material is clearly presented. The class is a lot of memorization so be prepared for the quizzes and cumulative final. Overall, he's such a nice and helpful person who makes his classes pretty engaging and enjoyable.
the best prof youll have at this school most likely. Extremely thorough and makes sure everyone understands a topic.
If you have the opportunity to take any of his classes, 100% do it. Even if your grade suffers, if you get to know him, he is one of the most important connections you could make at UM. He never forgets you once he knows your name, and is always willing to talk (As long as he's not busy). Genuinely wants to get to know his students.
It can not be stated how important he can be if he knows you. But beware to not go up to him and ask questions just for the sake of putting your name in his head, he will see right through that. I only got to meet with him as a result of unpredictable events but having him know me has definitely been a huge win for me
If you go to class, take notes, and then give two to four hours of studying per quiz, you should do very well. Shapiro makes the information clear and completely nullifies the need for the textbook. The class is entirely lecture based but he makes it very engaging by using students in examples of the law.
a great teacher and a fun class that taught me a lot and was interesting. quizzes take a lot of studying but he guides you well
This is, in my opinion, a hard class. However, Professor Shapiro makes sure everyone understand each topic taught. There are weekly review sections and he is very generous grading.
I truly do not understand the hype around Professor Shapiro. He comes off as extremely arrogant and brags all the time how he is personally responsible for the success of the business school. Shapiro is knowledgeable about certain subjects, but requiring every student to take his class is just ridiculous. Easily the most overrated professor at UM.
MGT199 is way too much work for a one credit class. It is also a colossal waste of time, and although I understand the intentions behind this course, it's not as practical as one might think. I don't think Mark Shapiro is special in anyway, and most of what he says in class is common sense.
Professor Shapiro is a very personable and kind instructor, always making himself available for questions and discussions. However, his workload can be overwhelming and his assignments can be very tedious. While his friendly demeanor helps to create a comfortable learning environment, his high expectations can cause unnecessary stress for students.
Anyone who says it's too much work just doesn't do any work. Yes, there are a couple of assignments but they aren't a waste of time at all. Stuff like building a resume, LinkedIn, and practicing for interviews. Theres a quiz at the end of each class but it isn't hard to do good on them. Good guy. Also ver well known in the school.
I really enjoyed Professor Shapiro's class. However, I feel that he is involved in too many different things at the business school and too busy to dedicate enough time to everything he does. In class he's great, but he truly doesn't have time to help every student. He really should ask for some assistance so he has time to give everyone attention.
I found this class to be very helpful for educating student on the job/internship process. As a first generation student, I don't have many personal resources to help me with this stuff but Professor Shapiro was very knowledgeable and helpful. The class also didn't add a large load to my pre-existing course schedule, and was very manageable.
You have to take Dr. Shapiro for MGT199. I won't be talking about him too much (he's good). Here's advice for the class: read all the readings in the syllabus before (or in) class. The quiz will be on it. Stay on top of the deadlines. You'll be fine as long as you do and the class is great to prepare for post-grad/finding internships.
Prof. Shapiro is a must-have in the business school. I took him for the Honors section. He doesn't give homework, but there's lots of notes in class. Quizzes are kinda hard but since it's law, there is not a single answer. The textbook sometimes doesn't line up with his lectures, so don't use it. Very interesting & interactive. Recommended 11/10!
By far the best professor I've had at UM! His lectures are very engaging and fun. The class covers the principles of contract law ... topics are highly-technical and involved. As long as you take notes and study for the quizzes you'll end with no worse than a B+. Take him!
This class will actively get you ready for jobs. You get what you give in the class so I would suggest listening. Be on time and you will be on time. He is a solid listener and he responds to emails on a consistent basis. You won't have a choice of teachers for this class but he is still good
Most valuable professor for career guidance at UM.
Don't bother with the textbook. Lectures are very engaging and interesting. Great teacher, cares about his students. Take thorough notes and study hard and you'll get an A
The class can be a lot of work (studying), but it is worth it. Phenomenal professor. If you have an opportunity to take him, do not pass it up.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Fun, interesting, smart professor who clearly cares about the material and the students. He moves fast, but if you ask questions, he'll take it easy. He's also a big person in the business school who it's good to get to know. Just... get ready to memorize.
Prof Shapiro is the best, making a complex topic easy to understand. To do well, you have to pay attention and take detailed notes, every class is so much content. To study, go over the examples in class and quiz - you have to know EVERYTHING. I found the textbook to be confusing, and just used it to clarify terms. Hard but super rewarding!
Professor Shapiro gives great lectures! He is very engaging and uses a lot of examples to teach the material. He is easy to talk to and tries to connect with every student he has. He is a very fair grader, giving a lot of partial credit on quizzes. The final is a little tough, but the quizzes aren't bad. As long as you study, you'll be good.
Shapiro is the absolute best. This class was test heavy (6 quizzes and a final made up most of the grade) and challenging, but so worth it. Learned a ton and wouldn't want any other professor teaching it.
This class consists of quizzes (5 questions) every class about the material learned that day and only a few assignments which are graded pretty heavily. Make sure not to leave anything for the last minute and use the grading criteria as you are completing assignments. It is very easy to not get an A in this class.
One of the best professors I took at UM. Took him for 476 and 485. Very difficult to get into his classes, they fill up quickly.
This was my hardest class at UM so far. Final grades are 90% tests. You need to go into every quiz or test very prepared by memorizing handwritten notes from lectures. Lectures are straightforward and entertaining. If you put in a reasonable amount of work you should not walk out of this class with lower than a B+. Shapiro is great!
Shapiro's BSL212 class was by no means easy, but your success depends on your studying habits and quality of note-taking. He was a great professor and understands the subject matter well, and it's worthwhile to be on his good side.
This class is easy if you pay attention. Shapiro is very knowledgeable and has established himself in the business world to equip us with the foundational things we need like interview prep, job search, resume etc. The assignments are all practical and helpful. Shapiro is so busy but still so available for students with any questions and advice.
Professor Shapiro is the best Professor at this school. He can explain complex subject matter in a way that makes it easy to understand. You will have to work and study a lot for this class and definitely do not skip class because you cannot teach yourself for this course. But Professor Shapiro really does make class enjoyable.
Gleeful Acrobatic Yellow
Professor Shapiro is an absolutely amazing professor, the best in the business law department. The course is definitely tough, but if you work hard you can do very well. A must take!!
Shapiro is a great professor and honestly a really good resource for internships+jobs. I will say he is a tough grader and there arent many things he grades you on but overall i recommend him, hes very smart and kind.
Did the assignments the right way and still got a worse grade than classmates who clearly cheated. Really frustrating to see my GPA drop for doing the honest work. Reached out but didn't feel like it was taken seriously. Not a fan of how unfair the grading felt.
Such a jolly fella. You can tell he's really passionate about his job and gives great advice on the internship search/ jobs/ working/ etc. A great professor connection to have and taught me a lot. Pay attention to what he has to say.
Professor Shapiro is truly an asset to the business school. He goes above and beyond to support students and is actually invested in our future after graduation. Lectures are engaging and a lot of current events were incorporated into our study which I enjoyed. If you show up and pay attention, there is absolutely nothing to worry about.
Good lecturer and very respected in the business school but his personality seems off to me
This professor was a huge disappointment. The class felt pointless, he hands off all real teaching to the TAs, and he spends most lectures talking about himself instead of the material. He's completely disconnected from students and shouldn't teach such a large class. One of the worst courses I've taken.
Shapiro is great for any business student who wants advice for their career in the future. He has a great background and knows what he's talking about. The class isn't too hard; some of the TAs make it better/worse. The assignments do force you to do things in the real world. However, this class really helped me get an internship!
Taking Professor Shapiro for BSL 212 as a Foote Fellow will CHANGE YOUR LIFE! He made me willing to wake up for 8AMs on TTh (not MWF because of ThirThur) and engages you in the content more than anything. He uses real world examples that actually makes sense to teach you which helps so much! Definitely look forward to taking him.
Easily one of the best professors and classes at UM. Law of Risk is a niche topic focused on negligence tort and insurance law, so be ready for a significant, but super interesting project and tests that require a strong analysis of the law. Put a little effort in and you'll absolutely love this class. Highly, highly, highly recommend
I've taken Prof. Shapiro now for BSL 212, MGT 199, and BSL 476 and he has been nothing short of amazing in all of them. He is a highly engaging lecturer that connects everything we discuss in class with real-world examples. BSL 476 focuses on tort law and insurance and connects directly with his own law practice. Highly recommend this course.
