amazing guy and teacher..funny as hell in class, and very laid back, yet still manages to teach some real info. You'll see him around campus, and he's just one of those teachers you want to say hi to. Not the most thorough and clear teachers i've ever had, but pretty easy. He never says anything negative-if you suck, he'll tell you in a nice way.
Mark is a nice and funny guy, but his dictation is difficult. If you have problems with dictation, don't recommend him. He's funny in class and has a great attitude and will help you during office hours only though!
mark is the****! I love the guy and have had him for 3 semesters. I would take any class you can from him cause hes just a great guy to know.
mark rules
Whats there not to say. Justin Timberlake in 7/4, current, applicable discussions, and a kind of selfless humor made his classes the highlight of my weeks at Berklee. Still cant believe Marc Cohn got shot in the head though, christ...

Loved Mark!
everyone hates eartraining and solfege. the classes are horrible, but Mark is AWESOME!!!! I waited over a year to take the second solfege just so I could get him. He makes it tolerable
Shilansky is one of the best teachers that I have ever had in my life. He's always willing to help students out, and has been more than helpful with some of my original compositions. What more can I say? I loved him. What a hottie.

awesome! he's a funny guy during the classes, but is also explain you the stuff clearly. one of my favorite berklee teachers.
great teacher, very genuine a pleasure to learn from
He is such a great piano player and of course teacher!! Amazing technic and knowledge about music. Also he is such a funny guy. Half of class he talks about music, musicians, and fun stuff. He is very easy going. He is really funny!! and good!! but make sure you follow the class and do homework.
Probably one of the funniest teachers i've had so far. he will make you laugh like no other and he's laid back and helpful. if you mess a quiz up, you can redo at his office hour. amazing musician and piano player. just make sure you do your homework, he actually grades it. highly recommended if you hate ear training and want a more fun approach.
mark is the way to go for ET
I've had three semesters with Mark. He's the man! Every class is like a comic routine. If you're serious about ear training then take somebody else. Mark makes 9am classes worth waking up for! I've been holding off on solfege 4 for a year because I'm waiting to get into one of his classes.
mark i know you read these, missing half the classes in the semester and having a sub just doesn't cut it. neither of you teach the same, and its not fair to the students. We didn't even get all the way through the book. I understand a lot of the students don't care, but its your job to teach the material. not to entertain.
Shilansky rules! Honestly, he's a great teacher. Ear Training is not that cool, lets face it. However, Mark makes is fun without it turning into a joke. He's a great musician as well and knows all the right artists. I highly recommend him! Matt B
Mr. Shilansky is a great teacher who DOES NOT favor women over men...
Attention! If anyone is having trouble in ET, take Mark. I owe him everything. If not for him, I probably would have never graduated. Just don't take advantage of his kindness. Show up, make an effort, and you'll pass. Mark, I owe you everything, thank you!!
Sir Shilansky is amazing. His sense of humor is hilarious, great taste in music, and get this- actually makes Ear Training fun. I really enjoyed his class...and his Don Henley impressions.
Mark Shilansky is the man. I suck at Ear Training and Mark made the class enjoyable and I actually learned material. Mark made the 9 am class very worthwhile attending and has an outstanding sense of humor. I am going to name my first born after him.
Mark is awesome. I admit I was skeptical going into class, because he's definitely not your typical berklee prof. He has a great sense of humor though, and has a lot of helpful things to say. I was newer to songwriting than some in my class, so I appreciated his support and constructive criticism. He is open to a lot of different types of music
Take take take. Seriously, there's only THAT many useful teachers in the Songwriting department. Word.
Had Shilansky for ET 2 & 3, what everyone says is true, he is the legend. He's a fantastic piano player and a really nice guy. He doesn't mind if you turn homework in late or have to make-up a quiz after the fact. His quizzes are stress-free, he's hilarious, I wish he taught ET4.
This teacher is great. He makes the class fun while you are learning. The guy is hilarious. I'm going to take him next semester. Awesome and down-to-earth guy. Can't mess this class up guys, I promise
Definitely entertaining and a great pianist! I'm convinced he knows how to play every pop song on piano. He helps you a bit through quizzes if you are fumbling, but just because you got through the example doesn't mean you got a decent grade. He's a pretty tough grader, but he's still a great guy.
Shilansky is hilarious. I love coming to class. People don't practice and don't do thaaaat great but he gives you the opportunity to make it up. Highly recommended.
Really great teacher. He is very understanding to all of his students. He is very good at making the class interesting. I recommend taking him at least once. :)
Excellent teacher, very helpful, lets you make up quiz grades in office hour, extremely funny. Makes the most boring melodies into the grooviest and funkiest songs ever! Definitely recommend!
Mark's attitude towards music & entertainment are great! Take his class. He spends a lot of class time talking about the latest pop sensations & what was on TV last night. He also goes around the room & has everybody sing things to keep on track. He generally "gives away" his difficult dictation examples by emphasizing different notes.
Mark is hilarious. Funniest man in the world.. However, he is not inspiring ear training teacher. Surely covers everything but not seriously. Class is very humble environment, fun, enjoyable. If you want to actually get solid on Ear training 2, take someone else.
Best ever.
get the class excited about solfege and is very funny, but can easily get off topic (which i don't always mind during a 2 hour long class). do your homework and participate in class and you will do well!
BEST TEACHER AT BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC! He is brilliant and will help you succeed as best you can.
Mark is super rad!
Mark is a real stand up guy who could make ANY class the best part of your day. Take his classes and never be disappointed.
Mark is hilarious! Love his class! REally helped me out and didnt mind me coming to his office hours. Lets you retake tests during office hour and is very understanding. Wish he has ET2 for next semester :( Take him you wont regret it! Hes also an amazing piano player, I think of the songs he plays sometimes when Im practicing ET.
LOVED MARK for a professor, however, he tended to bring political opinions into the classroom, which as a student I was not fond of. Political, religious, and social issue views should be kept outside the classroom. We are here to study music. Not insult others beliefs if we don't agree.
Mark is hilarious and wants his students to succeed in ear training. He is probably easier than most other et teachers due to his high flexibility, but the subject naturally requires hard work to earn a good grade. Classes were always fun and ear training became less daunting to most.
The Best!
Mark is a really funny guy and very understanding. Talk to him asap if you're having any issues with anything. Very good guy.
Recommend mark
One of the funniest and coolest teachers in the school. Great teacher and a great musician.
Terrible teacher. Spends significantly more time in the class joking around, showing up late, etc, and then gives much homework. His political nature is also very offensive and should be kept to himself. This is a music school, not a political school.
Very bad teacher. Disorganized. Gives assignments but he never reads your emails.I sent him projects that were not even graded because he didn't see the emails. He spends class time speaking about politics. Besides that, a lot of work and nothing to be learn. Avoid this teacher.
I took this class because there was no one else available for this course. Huge mistake. Mark spent class time talking about everything else except arranging songs. The only thing he did was sending emails with links of songs. We had to write an arrangment every week and most of the students used projects from other classes. Terrible teacher.
Don't ever take a class with him.
Mark is the man! Hilarious, made 9am classes fun and I learned a lot.
Enjoyed having him as a teacher, he's a really funny guy! He has a very good approach when it comes to teaching because he wants his students to succeed, as well as not bore them to death by lecturing all 50 minutes, so he will make jokes and engage in group topic discussions.
The funniest teacher at Berklee by far. If you work in his class, you will do well. You can always expect some hilarious jokes during class.
Wonderful Teacher
Not helpful. He spent a lot of time putting down the songs people chose for their projects, gave uninteresting assignments and never gave feedback unless asked over and over. Didn't learn anything.
Mark is hilarious. Just study and you'll be fine. You have to go to class, you might as well enjoy it.
He's hilarious and he gave us many opportunity to have extra credits. You can turn in your dictations when you want ahah he makes jokes for the entire lesson and he's really funny. I like him, but if you are not really good at ET, he won't do anything to help you. I went to his off. hours and he spent 5 min. with me! Sometimes he can be mean.
Mark, the Shark is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes Ear Training fun to do and never lets the class get dull. He is constantly cracking jokes and makes you feel like you're not IN a class. Still, he gets work done. Having the textbook is a must. And practicing is not optional if you wanna get good grades. Do you work, and its easy.
Shilansky is amazing! Hilarious, kind, and genuinely cares about the well-being of his students (both in his class and in life). Do yourself a favor and take his class.
he is funny... but he talks a lot ... but if you practice by your self is a chill class to take...
Mark is a funny guy. Just review the assignments a couple times. When it's quiz time, volunteer for the passages that you know well.. Very understanding. chill. liberal. cringe humour.
Mr. Shilansky is one of the FUNNIEST people I have ever interacted with. He'll make you sing alone, but doesn't make you feel uncomfortable. Also very understanding if you communicate with him honestly. Just be sure to come prepared for class. Definitely a good way to start the day 3 times a week!
Super fun ensemble teacher. Hillariously funny!
Mark shilansky. If theres any teacher that I believe everyone at this institution at least once, is this man. He is kindhearted, so funny, and so talented. He made ear training ( a class i hated ) so much fun and made it a class that I looked forward to attending. He is seriously one of the best teachers here and I highly recommend him
Mark is a great guy. He's hilarious and just wants all of his students to succeed. However, I struggled in his class a lot because there's little to no structure. If you don't mind putting in a little extra work outside of class to keep up, then he's a solid choice.
Great guy, don't get me wrong. Jus a bit unfocused as an ear training teacher. If you're looking for someone to challenge you and, ya know, start class without a long tangent, I would suggest you look elsewhere.
Best ET Teacher Hands Down, Caring and Loving, he will do anything to help through any melody. If you can tolerate his jokes, this guy is absolutely hilarious and super nice!
Great guy with funny stories. I was upset at first when he went off on tangents but I went to an office hour and asked to be pushed in the subject, he was really understanding and helped me improve a lot while also keeping class light and fun! Awesome teacher!
Mark is GREAT!!! He's sooo funny and chill. He does make you do the minimum required work but he's always willing to help. You will never get bored in his class! Take him for sure!
Mark is great and this class was extremely easy. If you're looking for a REALLY chill class then take him. He is lenient with homework and is very personable
Mark is such a sweet guy and really want the best for you. It's a positive environment in class and he literally has no deadlines for his assignments he let you turn them in whenever. Best professor for ear training right here. He doesn't pick on you to sight read in class. And if he does no big deal the class has no idea what's going on anyways
Kind, patient and is willing to let some mistakes pass if he sees that youre working hard enough. He makes us sing alone quite a lot but its a comfortable environment, and if youre doing all the work assigned then you should be comfortable with most of the stuff in class. Makes bad jokes but he's by far my favourite prof here at Berklee!
Such a funny teacher who genuinely cares about each of his students. He's a real gem who makes a normally annoying and difficult course become one of your favorites! Easily one of the best teachers at Berk
For the LOVE of God do NOT take this professor for Arr. for Songwriters, you will WASTE time and money. Does NOT teach ANYTHING. Nothing 'bout drop 2 or even the range of horns. When I mentioned this class(did not say his name) to another SW professor and she automatically said his name. She had him 9 years ago and she was disappointed then.
I hear he's not bad in Ear Training, but I don't recommend him for Arr. 4 Songwriters/I let him know 2 times (in the semester, I was learning nothing in class & he said: it's for lower semester students. I asked for horn techn. that are similar to violins (pizz, bow etc.) but he was not sure. Shocking 4 a prof. who's supposed to be a great arranger
mark is an incredible teacher. he is funny, laid back and makes ear training a very fun class. if ear training is not one of your fave classes, take it with him, i now appreciate ear training much more. the more classes we have, the more i admire him.
this man is such a gem. he is so kind and sweet and funny and will make something as dry and terrible as ear training actually wonderful. he also made 9 AM seem like a treat, which is a rare gift. if ear training is a tough subject for you he will work with you to help u out and also he's fairly lenient on singing quizzes
There's not much I can say about Mark than is written already. The man is one of the best teachers I've had, period. Everything I learned from him the past semester has made sense, and he's accommodating on the exams to ensure you're not stressing too much. Please take him if you have the chance, even if it's a 9am. You will not regret it.
Mark is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. He's so nice and really makes the class feel like a comfortable environment which makes all the singing quizzes super chill and not stressful. He also has basically no due dates for dictation. Overall just an awesome and funny guy. Take him if you have the change, you will not regret it!!
Professor Shilansky was an insanely hilarious teacher for harmony. I did struggle quite a bit in the beginning because although I tested out of MAT, the harmony and techniques learned in HR2 were something I had never experienced before. But he's encouraging and once you get the hang of it, it's truly enjoyable. Also he plays piano so well!
Mark Shilansky is the best professor at Berklee. If you want to enjoy ear training and life, you should take him. I took him from ET2-4 and it was so worth it.
Mark is sooo funny. If you take him at 8 or 9am he will wake you up or at least entertain your rotted early morning brain with his shenanigans. He's also pretty easy to learn from and makes everything as easy as it can be while still teaching the concepts and challenging you. If there is something you don't understand, he is willing to help.
This dude will email you an unorganized raw list of homeworks for the entire semester, and then not tell you what you're supposed to do. He makes terrible, heinous jokes in class that would make an xbox/playstation party look like a daycare. Would NEVER Take this class again. Has a proficient amount of meth and drug related jokes.
Overall the course was fine but he had a strong tendency to get off topic during class. Mostly a kind professor, but he did allude that he would grade harsher if you did well on the first quiz (and he did). If you really care about learning ear training I wouldn't take him, but if you're ok getting a fair amount and coasting then he's your guy.
DON'T TAKE HIM. THE TEST IS WAY MORE HARDER THAN THE CLASS.
Cool guy. Makes an early morning ET very enjoyable with his jokes and antics. Will make you a lot better with your ears, and is a very nice guy. You'll enjoy his class
I struggled with ear training, and I was very nervous about going into a new section when my other professor wasn't available, but Mark made the class fun. He was always there to help you and kept the class engaged with jokes and other antics. I would 1000% take him again.
Class time was not used effectively and there was little to no guidance/feedback on class material. Half of class was spent with Shilansky telling jokes, then we would spend the rest going through each melody/rhythm once. If we messed up there was nothing really said and we would move onto the next melody or rhythm.
BEST ET PROFESSOR
THE BEST!!!!!!!1
Wastes a decent amount of time going off on tangents or telling jokes. The remaining time is individual singing in front of the class, but if you mess up, you just get docked for the grade and he doesn't really say anything and moves on to the next person. Just a little bit of a hostile vibe and I didn't feel like I learned a whole lot from him
