Shuey is one of the nicest and understanding professor I've ever had. Before finals my roommate had a family emergency and much of my time was spent helping her instead of preparing for finals. I asked for a day extension on my final paper. Shuey gave me a week extension and told me my roommate needed me more than he needed my paper
Shuey's class really makes you look at the world differently. He takes participation points just for showing up which helps boost your grade and he doesn't give tests, just papers which aren't too bad. His personal stories are entertaining and relevant to the material. I recommend his class if you're looking to get something out of an AUCC class
Shuey is great! Definitely relates to students well and has a very interesting perspective on sociological theory which make his teaching style very captivating in my opinion. He's funny, helpful, and really great at giving feedback on all assignments. His class is the bomb.
Shuey is brilliant. He's pretty left leaning and likes to talk about the Grateful Dead more than I'd personally care to, but I loved his class. He challenges you to think critically, encourages students to voice their opinions, and it's a very thought-provoking course. I rarely feel sad when a class ends, but I will miss that fun hippie's lectures.
I loved this class. It's rare that a professor shows mutual respect for his students. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome, he challenges you to think, and he loves what he talks about. He's very smart and super accessible and I highly recommend his class to anyone, whether you need it for credit or not!
He is the best
Great teacher! He was so helpful with any problems and was willing to meet outside of class to help you! Would definitely take his class again!
One of the best professors I've ever had! Very personable and I actually enjoy his lectures and attending class! Gives great feedback on essays and teaches important subjects about society!
Shuey was easily one of my favorite professors I've had at CSU. I wasn't expecting as many essays as there were but he is an easy grader JUST FOLLOW THE RUBRIC TO A T and you'll get high 90s on all the papers. His tests are extremely easy and he tells you exactly what will be on the exam. He is a lot of fun and cares about his students.
Extremely outgoing and passionate about the world around him, especially in regards to sociology and its present day influence.
Outgoing, caring, motivational & genuine. Lectures are engaging, informative, relatable & fun. At times, he can feel like a father figure/friend due to his authenticity & compassion for us & his cool stories. More like fascinating dialogue w students vs long lecturing. Cool class, learned & easy-ish. Soc allows room for politics but no bias w him!
Mark is really cool. I recommend taking this course. He made me question my beliefs and become a better person. Papers are more difficult than he makes them seem though. He talks to you like an adult in a conversation instead of a professor lecturing students. He has lived what seems to be a cool life. He is cool. Just show up to class, attendance.
Shuey is one of the best professors I have had. He is very caring, and respects you as a student. Unlike most professors, Shuey's lectures are engaging and won't put you to sleep. Shuey treats you an adult, not just a "college kid." He always gives positive feedback, and is constructive if you don't do well on something.
At first I was kind of annoyed at how much his lectures are politically driven. He is critical of both the liberal and conservative side. But he does a great job at explaining sociological concepts and is super nice. Papers are an easy A as long as you follow the rubric and there are no surprises on the exams, 100% lecture based.
Mark Shuey is hilarious, intelligent, and kind. He makes SOC100 an exciting and interesting class, even at 8 in the morning. Your grade is made up of attendance points, 3 papers, and 3 exams. He makes it clear he wants his students to succeed, which I really respect in a professor. If you need to take SOC 1OO, I recommend Professor Shuey.
Shuey makes this class really interesting, and it's an easy A if you go. I recommend taking this class at a time where you know you will go, because the participation points can hurt. The essays are also sometimes tricky, but he allows rewrites and help if you talk to him. Overall it is as easy as you make it, put effort in and go to class.
This class was a lot of fun! I would definitely recommend taking one of Professor Shuey's classes if you have the chance. He is funny, kind, and genuinely intelligent. Participation matters in this class and you will have points deducted if you skip - you probably won't want to skip, though. I woke up every morning genuinely excited to go.
Really easy class. He tells you what is going to be in the exams through the lectures in class. Really funny and outgoing. Extremely caring and lets you have extensions when needed. He doesnt want his students to fail. Show up to class for easy participation points can bump your grade up.
Shuey is a very good professor.... I would highly recommend taking his class while at CSU.
His class was 1 of the classes I woke up excited to go to. He genuinely cares about what he is teaching and makes his lectures very interesting hes also very kind. Essays require a lot of reading and effort but you should be fine if u follow the rubric. Prob my favorite professors/class ever. He helps u prepare for exams very well & has study guide
Professor Shueys lectures are some of the most interesting lectures Ive been to. There arent really any assignments in this class other than a weekly reading quiz, weekly discussion board, and an end term paper. As long as you come to class and read the assigned reading, this class is great!
I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to have learned from Mr. Shuey! He is great at teaching and I'm so sad that I did not find out about his class earlier in my college career as the material would've helped me tremendously in my other Soc classes and in reality in my personal life. He's lenient on assignments and is always so helpful.
Shuey is such a fun, quirky prof that is really passionate about what he teaches. This class had weekly quizzes, but if you show up, he will tell you exactly what's on it. He gives out a "lecture password" every class which only accounts for a small portion of the grade. If you show up to this class, it is an easy A!
I do like Shuey don't get me wrong, but oh my gosh he is a horrible grader and gives the worst feedback back. Theres 4 essays in this class and I have never gotten below an A on an essay and he has given we C's and B's just because of stupid stuff. Horrible horrible grader and one of the stupidest feedback and reasons for taking away points
Shuey was easily one of my favorite professors. He was very entertaining, genuine, and honest during his lectures. He made sure that everyone that wanted to participate during lectures felt comfortable doing so and had a safe space to speak. There are not many assignments but there are participation points so show up to lectures to get those.
Loved shuey, the weekly readings are actually interesting and by doing them its an easy 100 on the reading quizzes, i basically didnt go to class and ended with an A
Professor Shuey is very kind and he clearly loves what he does. I took him as a Junior because I switched majors and the class was just a little boring. You can skip class but make sure you find a friend first because he has daily lecture passwords. You have quizzes on the textbook every week so make sure you read it, that is most of your grade.
Shuey is great! His class was fun but the slides were a little vague. Theres quizzes every week but theyre not hard. Theres only one paper you have to write which is the final
Professor Shuey is great. Lecture is super interesting and he has plenty of stories that he loves to share with the class. Minimal note taking and there is a weekly reading quiz that he goes over before it opens. No tests and the final is an essay. However, do not take this class if you don't want to discuss controversial subjects. Overall, 10/10.
Shuey is definitely one of my favorite professors at CSU. I had him for 105 and 205 and in both classes he was passionate about the topics and his lectures are always really interesting and funny. He's also a really cool guy and adds in a lot of his personal experiences and examples. The work isn't too difficult and he helps you a lot. 10/10 prof.
Not a super hard class, discussion boards are a big part of class. A lot comes straight from book, but weekly quizzes are easy if you show up Shuey gives the quiz review in class the days before. The review is really just the answers to the quiz so go for that and you'll pass every quiz. The more you participate the more he'll like you.
I took Shuey's SOC372 (wasn't an option to put here) but I loved it so much, it was Sociology of Deviance. Such an interesting class that incorporates many sociological concepts. He is down to heart and a funny and very personable man. You are gonna want to attend class as his lectures online are vague and he does take attendance. I'd recommend.
Professor Shuey is awesome! There is a lot of writing but you learn the material and it is effective.
shuey is very kind when it comes to personal issues, but i always thought he had a rude tone by email. answers emails very fast, attendance is required but he prepares you well for exams and papers. not too tough not too easy. would take him again if i had to
I had Shuey for his social problems class and currently taking Race and Racism. He's hilarious but class is very lecture heavy and you have to go to class for lecture points. There's a quiz with 60 questions every month and there is 2 5-paged essays you need to write plus 2 sociological responses. The final is online so that's the good thing.
Prof. Shuey is absolutely amazing and a complete joy to have as a teacher! No real textbooks, but there are book readings outside of class. Exams are online with very accommodating deadlines, and essays are long but grading goes very smoothly! He has a great sense of humor, if you are taking a sociology class make SURE you have him as a professor!
Professor Shuey is great! He is very clear with what he expects and explains his concepts well. Your grade consists of weekly reading quizzes, discussion boards/responses and the final essay. He does reviews for quizzes and his lectures are entertaining. He includes a lot of personal experiences
This class has a total of 10 papers, but all on interesting topics. I genuinely loved this professor and would take another class with him. Show up to class, just listen to paper prompts.
He is a great teacher and fun to listen to in his class. Highly recommend him. Just show up to class and complete assignments ON TIME.
Shuey is one of the best professors I have had. His slides during lectures are clear and short. Before each exam he tells you exactly what will be on the exam, so no surprises. Just SHOW UP! He explains exactly what he is looking for. You will need to have some type of access to the books for papers. If you're cool and respectful he will be too.
Nice guy and a fairly easy class, but you get points taken away for every lecture you miss
Such a great person and teacher. I have had him twice and both times he gave amazing feedback on essays and also took like one day to grade them. He responds quick to emails, and overall is very caring and understanding. He is a little picky with random stuff in the essays so make sure you nail the little stuff.
A great teacher who gave great feedback throughout the semester.
Shuey is such a nice professor! His lectures are filled with personal stories and whatnot (up to you whether that's good or bad), and he posts his powerpoints online. He goes through exams the class before and does a vague review which I thought was helpful. The books for this class were interesting but VERY hefty. A really great class :)
He's dope!
Pretty easy class, one reading quiz a week that's really straight forward, one final essay, a few discussion boards, nothing else! He's a great professor and is a really fun lecturer. He's open to feedback and is generally a really nice guy. Definitely going to stay in touch with him. 10/10 class and 10/10 guy
Shuey is literally so great. Everything on the weekly quizzes are literally given to us in class, so I feel like I actually learned instead of caring about my grades! He's very laid back and learned my name within the first week (it was a lecture with like 300 people). He also is really smart. I HIGHLY recommend
Shuey is a good professor and very into his topics. His grading is frustrating because he is so nit-picky. Attendance in my opinion is way to many points, so missing is not really an option.
I really liked Professor Shuey! He lectures a lot but is very engaging and really knows what he's talking about. If you go to class and don't skip this class is an easy A since pretty much everything you need to know for the take home tests he says in class. I would definitely recommend it as an AUCC credit since it was extremely doable with him :)
If you need this class for random credits - take it. if you want to learn something useful/are a soc major, avoid Shuey. He's amusing but his lectures are anecdote-heavy. He gives out exam questions at random, though. Out of the 3 books on the syllabus, we used one book and one chapter of another.
He was awesome! Willing to work with you to help you be successful as long as you did the work. Class discussion was fun! Detailed lectures which was helpful for weekly quizzes. Weekly essays were a little difficult to keep up with, but the instructions were the exact same to make it easy to write. Fascinating to learn about each theorist.
Professor Shuey was so great, I looked forward to his class every week. His lectures were very laid back, and class discussion was always really engaging, and I felt like I actually learned. It is easy to understand the information and pass just by going to class, and not forgetting to do assignments. Such a nice and fun guy to be around!
If you hate writing, this class is not for you. Be prepared for long, tedious papers based on the textbook. Shuey is a cool, funny guy and great at lecturing, but I did not enjoy any of the papers, exams, or presentations. I appreciate what I learned from this class very much, but it was just time consuming. Also, you CANNOT ditch this class.
really good prof especially if you are a sociology major! phone policy is insane though, very strict considering we pay for the class. thats his only flaw tbh
His lectures were pretty entertaining, he just was super unclear about grading. His grading was pretty unfair and he was not lenient at all towards grading or special circumstances. He just pisses me off honestly
SOC105; Class was super easy, and he was very accommodating with some extenuating circumstances I've had over the semester. However, he says he takes a nonpartisan approach with teaching and he doesn't. His teachings are very left-skewed. Class is an Easy A though.
Okay professor, the class was very easy as there is no exams. Entire lecture is pretty mind numbing and hard to pay attention to. Most of his lectures are him calling things stupid and making him seem like a perfect person. Talks about his ex wife a lot? Calls people out in class, very uncomfortable.
Shuey is a good guy? Lectures are heavy and long. Very very hard grader. The lectures are laid back but class feels like a boys club most of the time. Gives no extensions for late work without a doctors note. Strictly NO extra credit. Very strict phone policy (will call you out in the middle of lecture/kick you out of class)
just a silly guy! his class is very easy, but very informative. just stay on top of discussion boards and quizzes and you'll be fine
Class is lecture-based. There are i-Clicker points in each class graded for attendance. There are also weekly quizzes and discussion boards. There is one final essay. Does have a strict phone policy, so just don't use it.
Really interesting lectures, he's a very funny professor and is obviously interested in what he is teaching. You are not allowed to use your phone during class at all but its really not a big deal because he is pretty interesting. Weekly quizzes and discussion posts every other week are your only real assignments which is nice.
This is my second time taking Shuey, he's a great professor. He does grade pretty tough but has a rubric for every assignment and makes his grading clear such as what's to be expected. For this class, there are 8-2 page essays for each theorist/2 essay exams/ final 5-page paper. Overall if you can keep up and not miss class you'll do great :)
Shuey is so great. He truly loves his job and it shows in class. Even though my lecture had around 300 people, I always raised my hand to try to answer questions because he literally never judges a dumb reply. He cares about our learning so there's a no-phone policy but really with his lectures, I feel like not being on my phone is easy tbh
I took Shuey's class spring 2024 and was absolutely my favorite class. Attendance is mandatory as he does iclicker at the end of class to keep track. I found every lecture to be interesting as you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. You have a take home exam every weekend which are really easy. Discussions are easy and one paper.
Not easy going as he claims. Makes things wrong when they're right. Can't reason with him.
If you care about your mental health, you will not take his class. So unreasonable with his grading and never consistent with what he wants. Also you have to buy so many outside sources, so be prepared to drop a bag.
He is very straightforward with his teaching but remains unbiased. He makes the classes very interesting and fun to go! He assigns no homework other than an essay every other week, but they are only a page and a half in length
Fair but strict professor. He dose not give extra credit whatsoever no exceptions.
Shuey was great. The class is not unreasonable at all, the tests are simple, and the class is easy if you go. There are three longer essays that took some time, but Shuey does great of laying expectations, and if you take your time with the paper he grades fairly easily.
The attendance is inconvenient but his class overall is informative and a good introductory class. He has weekly quizzes but he gives you all the answers in class.
Usually a funny, respectful and balanced lecturer about tough topics, but some things he said were derogatory or uninformed. He cares about what he teaches, has high but fair expectations, goes on tangents sometimes but discussions are interesting. Pretty easy class. Just show up, take good notes, and listen to conversations. No extra credit
Shuey is fine but goes on long rants that don't have anything to do with the class. The way he assigns papers is so weird and it's so hard to meet all the standards he sets. A lot of times the maximum page limit isn't enough to contain all the information he wants, and he takes off points for everything. He's a little rude to students, too.
Professor Shuey is AWESOME and SO FUNNY. TAKE HIS CLASS!! He is SO engaging with his lectures as we discuss many interesting topics. I genuinely learned so much about the world from him, which widened my perspective. He takes attendance through i-clicker. There are weekly quizzes about each text chapter, 6 two-page essays, and 1 final 4-page essay.
Very passionate about what he teaches and was very kind and understanding over email.
Shuey is a really great professor, he cares a lot about the material and is very considerate. Grades were mostly composed of a few big essays/exams and iclicker. Grading can be harsh, but if you follow the rubric you'll be fine. Exams are easy if you go to class and study before. I loved this class and Mr.Shuey. He is very funny/engaging. 10/10
make sure to show up; attendance really matters in this class. other than that, the class is pretty easy. there's an essay like every other week but only up to 2 pages. weekly quizzes but those are also pretty light. he's a really funny guy
Professor Shuey is a great professor, his lectures are very entertaining. He makes you buy and read a lot of books as well as papers though. Make sure you don't miss many classes or you will fail.
Professor Shuey is knowledgeable in sociology, but he tends to push a political agenda and can be biased. His admiration for Karl Marx is evident, and he expects students to share that perspective. Be prepared to focus solely on notes, as he may call you out or ask you to leave if you're on your phone or computer(not taking notes).
Shuey is the goat, that is all
Professor Shuey is great! He is on the stricter side but makes his lectures interesting and engaging and literally gives you the exam questions and answers. Literally go to class, pay attention and you'll pass. The essays and exams really carry your grade so make sure to follow the rubric and study, you'll pass with a good grade.
The irony is hilarious- requiring doctor's notes while teaching about systemic barriers, particularly in American healthcare, seems to completely miss the point. It's clear this professor doesn't prioritize supporting students. Find one who genuinely cares.
He is one of the most ineffective teachers I have had. He imposes his political beliefs on students and grades based on agreement rather than the quality of work. He assigns lengthy essays with very little time to complete them, requires reading assignments of over 100 pages, and provides vague instructions while grading extremely harshly.
Hes a decent professor. He has an insane rule disallowing laptops in class. His lectures are insanely long and theres constant talk about all the problems with the USA, Government, Upper class, etc. I found it depressing to show up after a while. Assignment wise, essays are extremely easy (max 2 pages) and theres weekly quizzes that are open note.
Shuey is a very caring and nice guy. It was hard to attend class after a while due to how the lectures were. He does love to talk, so you will only make it through 4 lecture slides during a 2-hour class because he will talk your ear off. He gives all the test answers in class, and only like 6 essays for this class. The attendance is a bit crazy.
Mark Shuey is a great professor with very strong opinions on politics. He hates both sides and it's great to hear critique of both democrats and republicans. He doesn't do exams and the quizzes are quite easy and his essays are very short and easy.
Professor Shuey was so awesome. If you engage with the lecture it makes it so worthwhile. There is one essay due every 2 weeks-ish(max 2 pages), which is very doable, with minimal other outside-of-class work. He is so funny and is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. If I can, I will absolutely take another one of his classes.
Basic rubrics, copy pasted every semester to respond to a current piece of media. The media and the response are not checked though. It's essentially book reports, underlining key vocabulary words and defining them verbatim from the textbook. There is no original ideation, learning, applications of concepts.
Contemporary social issues was taken, the papers can be written by underlining a vocabulary words from the book and defining them. However, applying politics as a social issue apparently was NOT in the textbook and my final was docked 25% of its grade for that when the rest of the semester was As. He's not a fan of new ideas.
Lectures were good to reinforce hard concepts but got very political very fast. He even made fun of a student from a prior class who expressed a different opinion from his own to us. Other than those gripes, annotate your textbook (find only key terms the rest is only supplementary but intended) and start on essays ASAP.
Professor Shuey is one of the best professors I've had so far. If you go to class and listen, you'll pass. I never read the textbook and got 100s on my essays and quizzes just from the lectures! Yes, his social problems class is political, but he's a sociology teacher. He is respectful of students ideas and encourages us to talk
He is very strict with deadlines but he goes out of the way to explain when they are due and what is expected when submitting essays. There are a lot of essays (about one per 2 - 3 weeks) but you get to choose what you write about. Essays are also short; 1 1/2 page in length
I love this guy; he's funny, and you will learn a lot and retain it. Fave professor what a king
Great professor, very easy and kind to work with and the lectures were super interesting. Lots of debates and controversial topics but it was thrilling. Lots of reading but not mandatory, it does help if you want to contribute to the discussion or pull quotes for essays. Great class, would take again!
I loved this class. If you go to class and put in effort, you'll get an A. In lectures, he tells you exactly what is on the exam. There are like 2 or 3 papers throughout the semester but they aren't too hard, just lengthy.
This man will grade your essays so hard that all you can do is cry yourself to sleep contemplating life, and then half the classes essays are graded by the TA and they all get As it's very unfair!!!
The papers are graded very harshly it's kind of doing to much, be ready to get docked 10-15 points for even the tiniest mistake.
will share 9/11 conspiracies and no one is allowed to argue.
The essays are extremely hard. I thought I was the only one until I've seen other reviews, please be aware before taking this class. Even if you've gotten As on all your other essays it doesn't matter.
Professor Shuey is a great guy and extremely kind! I had a death in my family which resulted in me missing a lot of class, but he was very understanding which explains my low grade! as long as you go to class, you're sure to get a good grade! 10/10 recommend! Mr. Shuey is a very kind man!
Attendance is 10% of your grade, mostly its open book quizes and one-page essays, with one final essay 3-4 page. Ignore people complaining about the essays. I consider myself a very average writer and have gotten all 54-60/60 on them. Ive noticed that writing about liberal topics has gotten me slightly better grades, but it is an enjoyable class.
Moderate workload. Assignments consist of a varied of readings and documentaries, a discussion board post + replies per unit, and a 3pg essay to end each unit. Rubrics for all assignments are extremely detailed. I found the course enjoyable and interesting. Prof Shuey provides feedback and returns grades faster than any other professor.
