Prof Simon is great! She is fair, friendly, considerate and knowledgable. One of the greatest teachers you would ever met in art field. Highly recommend!! You will enjoy the classes very much, and you will get a good grade if you listen and study a bit. Attendance is mandatory.

Prof. Simon was wonderful! I truly enjoyed her class. I would recommend the class to anyone - she is a very helpful and informative professor, and a wonderful person to boot.
prof simon is gr8! i had a huge problem in the class and she was soo understanding and helpful! i love her
GUYS IF YOU> YES YOU WANTS TO PASS ONE OF THE WRITTING INTENSIVE CLASS. Take HIM > VERY NICE PERSON< AND MOST FAIR DO WHAT HE ASK YOU TO DO<< THAT IS ALL I GOT A+. 5 papaers compare and contrast, 3 pages, and a multiple choice final exam.
shes a very good teacher.an ok class.kinda boring class sometimes because she can go on and on but she gives one assignment at beginning of semester,2 examz and a final. she gives a list of images which u memorize for exam
This class is so boring but you dont have to pay attention-although it would help a lot- because the tests come right from the textbook, which makes for somewhat interesting reading. The tests are easy if you read and study from the text-plus all tests have extra credit. She keeps attendance but you really dont have to participate. Nice teacher.
The class is a bit boring, but you don't really have to listen or participate. She's a very nice person and her tests are easy as she gives an image list for the test. She's also a easy grader and tries to give you as many points as she can.
She is a complete sweetheart. Class may be boring, but it's an easy A. Just memorize the images and some vocab. for her tests. Make sure on tests you write a lot about the image, not just the historical facts, because that is what gives you points on the tests. Take her if you want an A and need the class.
Just a great class and an awesome professor. If you want an easy A, take this class. There are 3 exams and all you have to do is define 5/10 vocab words and write about 5/10 images. There is also a paper but its not so bad. You have to come to class because she takes attendance and it counts toward your grade but you don't have to listen in class.
ok so extremely strict, likes things done a certain way. DONT MISS CLASS, DONT EAT IN HIS CLASS, DONT LEAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF CLASS, DONT USE YOUR PHONE OR LET IT RING, show you care, write down all the notes, do exactly what he wants and you'll get a A. hes understanding and is incredibly smart.
Like the last person said, keep that phone off or he'll chew you out. You have to be spot on perfect attendance no talking or else. He's a good teacher but if you get on his bad side it's down hill fast.
get on his good side and ur good to go, yes he is strict, but he is a fair person, he wants his students to pass, he helps his students, and he is not boring he keeps you interested. I have taken him for Hist 101, 102, 149, and im taking him for two more classes and I have gotten A's in all. He is the best history professor in queens college.
You have to show interest at all times during his class though not necessarily participate. Very good to students who don't speak English well or who show improvement. Extremely nice guy who cares incredibly for his students and tried to turn history into a storytelling class. his only goal is to make history interesting to the students. TAKE HIM
WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR, HE IS LIKE A DEVIL. MAKES CLASS MISERABLE FOR THE STUDENTS. TAKES OUT ALL ANGER AT ANYONE. SAYS HE WILL GUARANTEE A B- FOR PERFECT ATTENDANCE ITS ALL BS.
Under-rated professor. He genuinely cares about the students and tries to help them. The content he teachers is directly applicable to what I teach during the year. Overall, a very good teacher!
Not a bad professor at all. Although he is strict he cares for his students and will make an effort to improve your work. Just do the work (Correctly!!), show up on time, and try your best and you will get a decent grade
Honestly a great professor, he is an extremely smart man and for that I'am thankful. He is tough, and doesn't want people who won't take the class seriously, who blames him? Don't use your phone EVER, show up and participate, study and you will truly enjoy this class. If I was a history major he'd be my go-to professor.
If you want an easy A this professor is not for you. Although somewhat tough with his grading, Mark Simon is a brilliant man. If you attend his class you won't regret it. The class was lecture based, but far from boring. He clearly explains the subject material and does so with passion. He actually enjoys teaching & in the end you really do learn.
Professor is not mentally stable, he loses it when you are late (with a reason or not), curses once in a while (which would be OK in a teaching content, but not addressed directly at someone) Tests are in a form of essays, which are graded out of blue moon. You can know everything and be an ?A? student, but if he doesn?t like you, you are out of lu
Tests are in a form of essays, which are graded out of blue moon.... Very odd.... I am an A student got F on first exam.... Do not take him
Mark Simon is a brilliant man. Throughout high school, I gained a great hatred for history, but this professor changed my whole perspective. You can only have three absences, and can't use cell phones, but the way that he explains history is brilliant. I would recommend taking this professor. He changed my outlook on learning.
Mark Simon is brilliant. As others have noted, he has strict classroom rules that he expects students to follow. He is passionate about History and it comes through in his teaching. He truly cares about his students. Easily one of the best professors I have ever had.
Honestly one of the most passionate men I have ever met. His profound knowledge of History and ability to weave it all together creates a steady stream of information buzzing through the classroom. He can be harsh at times but only because he cares so much about what he is teaching. He demands the utmost respect and he deserves every ounce of it.
Great professor, an encyclopedia of knowledge. Show up, participate, and be respectful (don't pull your phone out he flips out) and you'll get an A even if you bomb the tests. Extremely funny guy as well, manages to make even the dryest historical topic fascinating. Probably one of my most memorable professors.
Great professor. I never enjoyed any history class prior to this one, you learn a lot. Be prepared to take notes, & attend classes. I got an A. He worked with us depending on what we wanted for midterm/final. Be on time!
I agree with the majority by saying Professor Simon is a nice caring man. However, his exams require a lot of studying. If you willing to put in a lot of studying for the midterm and final then sure take him but if your looking for something a bit more relaxed DO NOT. I remember crying while studying for the final because it was just too much.
Taking 2 classes w/ him now & making next semester a 3rd! Love him! He is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help his students in any way he can(not to mention he's hilarious). He lets you decide how you want your midterm formatted. Textbook helps but you can get by without using it too much. He makes history interesting. Great man!
Professors like him make you feel so privileged to go to Queens College. This guy is amazing, he's a genius, what doesn't he know? Plus he's so nice and funny! You will learn so much in his class, I know people who have taken him 4 times! He captivates you with his style of teaching history, you will gain a new appreciation for it. Take him!
Amazing professor, teacher and caring! love him!!!!!
Simply stated, Professor Simon is the most intelligent, passionate history teacher i've ever had. He truly cares about what he teaches and he makes everything interesting. The best professor I've ever had and I will definitely take more of his classes in the future. He is also hysterically funny.
Hands down one of the best professors ever! It was an honor to study under him.
Prof Simon does have rules - guess what so does life, deal with it! Don't eat, don't use your phone, don't come late and don't leave in the middle of a lecture in other words show some respect. You will not be sorry. He explains history better then the writers at HBO ever could. Seriously it's that interesting. Kin and compassionate = awesome
Awesome and very passionate. Simon is a great guy. As long as you do what your supposed to, you have nothing to worry about.
Professor Simon has a great mind. but hes too strict. Mandatory attendance which is against cuny policy threatened to fail me if i miss anymore class had favorites which he curved. He did not curve me ended up with a C.
I love him. He's an actual sweetheart, literally cares about you and teaches the class in a really fun and interesting way. Amazing.
This guy is the greatest, I want to be like Professor Simon when I grow up.
He's really helpful and friendly!
Professor Simon is so down to earth and keeps his classes interesting. Lectures keep everyone involved. He makes history fun.
THE BEST. WORDS CAN'T DESCRIBE HOW GOOD OF A PROFESSOR HE REALLY IS.
Great Professor. I highly recommend his class. He knows his subject and you will learn a lot if you are interested in Islam Civilization. Study hard and you will be rewarded with the right grade.
Very clear, interactive with the students, great material and very helpful
Knowledgeable and knows his stuff
Really nice and helpful. Truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is an amazing professor and I recommend him to everyone who is ambitious, and not lazy!!
Amazing professor! Fairly easy if you do the work. No homework except for reading, 2 exams (midterm/final). Participation is a plus. Learned a lot from him. Truly enjoyed his class.
Great professor with great knowledge. Definitely want to take another class with him.
Best professor so far!
Loves to teach. He is very passionate about his work, speaks clearly, and will answer any questions you have.
Smart guy. You really need to study for the test.
He is the best history professor ever! However, he is very strict. No late. No drink. No food. Don't leave the class during his lecture! He is very uncomfortable about it, and if you did, you'll hear words from him. If you're comfortable with those rules, he is the best. Lecture is fun and exams are very straight forward.
One of the rudest professors ever. Cuny has a policy where you cannot penalize a student by attendance. I missed 2 classes when i took it in summer 13. he threatened to fail me. did fine on the midterm but he graded harh because of my absences. everyone else who had perfect attendance got a 10 pt curve. so unfair beware. he is a great lecturer
He is by far one of history's finest. Always has good points and knows his stuff. If you read and attend lecture, you'll do extremely well.
Just do what he tells you and you will pass.
Worst professor I have ever had, he threw out 9 people from the class for failing the midterm and made then WITHDRAW! He doesn't want to look bad so either threatens you wjth failing or withdrawing. He picks on students who look like slackers and is very degrading he will humiliate you. You want mental abuse sign right up.
He does come across as intense when ppl are late or do poorly & he does encourage those ppl to drop the course. But he never kicked any1 out. 1 person bombed the midterm & he asked her if she would consider dropping. She didn't so he ended up explaining to us all that he would put more weight on the final. Nice guy if you show interest & work hard.
One of the greatest and smartest professors you'll ever meet. He's very passionate when he's teaching and you have to listen to his rules or else he will roast you. Other then that you will learn a lot if you pay attention in class.
this professor is a complete nutjob. he yells and curses at the class and threw 9 kids out halfway through the year. if you take notes and study you will get an A. however if you are faint of heart and do not enjoy being yelled at stay away.
Avoid him if you can. I was extremely regretful that I didn't drop this class which killed my GPA. You must have a strong mental burden ability because sometimes he got mad and just shouted out suddenly.....
I recommend not taking Professor Simon. He is not the most respectful when it comes to the way he talks to his students. He cursed at a few people for nodding off and will humiliate you when presented the opportunity. I received my first C of my college career. Stay away from this class.
Be prepared to take notes!! Easily 5-6 pages of notes per class. I honestly didn't use my textbook but a lot of student said it did make the class easier. I received a B- but I really worked for it He set me up with another student in the class to tutor me, he clearly did the most he could to help me pass but it was ultimately up to me.
A true professional, and the scope of his knowledge is incredible. Takes classroom decorum very seriously. Not a class for the lazy, but by no means hard either.
Love this Professor. Took him for a summer class on history of the Middle East. I find the topic so boring, but he brought it to life for me. Does not kick people out but suggests to drop the class. It was wonderful to finally see a Professor make students accountable for their lateness and laziness. I wish I could take him again.
He's passionate about what he teaches. Its all lecture and just a midterm & a final. Take good notes, ask insightful questions and study frequently and your guaranteed an A. The only people who dont fair well are those who dont put in the time for school and still expect to do well. Know your limits and dont take his class if you want to be lazy
This professor knows his history. If you want to learn a lot you should take his class. However you must come with thick skin. He does go on profanity laced tirades that seem undeserved at times. If you can weather that storm and look past this you will be able to learn some history.
Do not skip class. I missed four classes and got a 53 on the midterm. However he allows you to do well on the final and get it counted twice. I'm happy I didn't drop it because after three weeks of studying I got an A. TAKE GOOD NOTES YOU WILL NEED THEM.
Mark Simon is brilliant, know so much about so many topics. However, he does not suffer fools gladly. You have to be a serious student in his classes. You must show up, show up on time, and bring the textbook when he asks. You will learn in his class.
Here's the deal. This guy is a lecturer. He knows his stuff and you can learn a lot from him. You have to read and take a ton of notes in order to have enough information to do well on his tests. He will try to help you if you show up to class and ask him for help. The only draw back for are is profanity laced tirades. I could do without those.
Really knows his stuff and can rattle off facts and dates like they are nothing. WILL fail you if you miss classdon't pay attention but is super honest about it. Be ready to write 5-6 pages of notes per class, non-stop. Sometimes lets his emotions get the better of him and has no qualms about cursing up a storm in class, but can also be very funny
he's very mean and scary if he doesnt like you. Just show up to class, participate, and ull be fine! He just wants to see that you want to be in the class and you want to learn. he curses a lot and hates students that miss class
He knows his subject but nothing about respect, he believes his class is a preschool class everybody needs to be concentrated in his ugly face, I studied very hard for the midterm for a MONTH!! and he failed me didn't even let me open the blue book to see my answers, he menaced 9 people including myself that if we didn't drop he will fail us anyway
He wants his students to do well. Took him for Winter Session and it was a great experience overall. Sometimes we'd go off topic but Prof was intelligent in many respects. Test was clear cut and we had a book discussion which everyone was involved in. Would take again.
If you are looking to learn something new, Mark Simon is the professor for you. Extremely knowledgable in all facets of history, the prisoner is genuinely interested in expanding each and every student's knowledge. He made it clear from the very beginning if you leave his class knowing something you didn't he succeeded. You earn your grade period.
He knows history extremely well. Note taking is vital. 5 or more pages of notes each class. No review or review sheet for test. Midterm and final only, very hard. Hates when you miss class. If history is hard for you don't take this class. No one is ever late. He hates that and no bathroom during class. He curses and is rude sometimes.
This class is very stressful. The the midterm and final are tough. No review or review sheet. Super long lectures. Punctuality is vital. When ever it's the getting to the day I have him in so depressed. You will lose your mind. But he is intelligent of the subject. Will help if you ask. Curses and rude. If he likes you he's nice to you. Show u care
Professor Simon is literally the most inspirational teacher I have ever had in my life. He is absolutely hilarious and he oozes passion of his craft and it's truly inspiring. All he asks is you show up to class pay attention take notes and read a bit at home. He has only a mid term and final but lets you chose 2 essays or 10 short answers. AMAZING!
Well respected professor. States clearly what he expects from you. The only exams are the midterms and finals. He also does book checks to make sure you have the textbook. Make sure to attend all of his lectures and be ready to write 1 and a half pages of note each class. His lectures are interesting and he knows his information
Had him along with Professor Jordan for the history part of class for MLAS 700 and MLAS 701 last year. I do not know about Undergrad, but with Grad students he is great. The respect you give him, is the respect you get back. Great lectures with much enthusiasm, and will make you want to hear more of it. Straight forward, your grade is what you earn
I took him as an extra class because I needed it. This professor is by no means an easy A and if you want an easy A this is the wrong class. But if history is your forte, you will LOVE Professor Simon. Just show up for his class, take notes and don't be late. He is strict, but for good reason. I am hoping to take him for Japanese history.
His class is based on lectures and the way he grades the midterm and final are really tough because he wants stupid details from why its important to why it matters in life. If you dont come to class your not going to pass and lectures are at a fast pace, good luck but if you can dont take his class.
I am not even lying to you when I say that this is the greatest teacher I have ever had in my life. I feel blessed to have had this teacher. He is strict, but I like that. You learn a lot. There is no reason you should not pass, he only expects you to know a fraction of the material. I am not a history major but I am DEFINITELY taking him again.
As a teacher and as a person- he's just not nice- plain and simple.
He says he gives extra credit for effort but thats not true- its all based on the 2 exams of which he doesn't even let you see after he grades them. Not nice
This is the first professor where the most important factor of your grade is weather you ask questions in class- you can ask irrelvant questions- but just raise your hand and talk- otherwise you wont do well. You can take the best notes and study for the exams but if you dont "participate" your done. Very unfortunate method of teaching.
Straight up worst prof. Ive ever taken in Uni. I showed up to all the lectures and took notes and did well on the exams but apparently you gotta talk up in class in order to crack an A- at best... Ever heard of such a thing? Ridiculous . And all this one girl ever talked about was her political agenda and opinions and he liked that the most!
His class was straight forward. Take notes and participate. Always be in class and read the book. If you care for the class, he will see and give you the grade you deserve. He is one of the professors that actually care about the students. Highly recommend. I took this class in the winter and he shorten the class in order for us to get home safe.
Professor Simon is by far one of the best history professors. He is full of knowledge and you will learn so much from his class. You need to work for your grade and study hard. But when he sees you put in effort he takes that into consideration for your final grade. Would 100% recommend him to a friend.
Professor Simon in the encyclopedia of the QC history department. I have had class with him three times, and I can say that if you put in work you will do well. expects students to show up and take notesand doesnt want bs excuses. Wouldnt want a prof who DIDNT expect that from college students. Would love to take a non-survey course with him!
Take him if you're prepare to memorize 25 pages of notes for a test that's pure spitback. If u get on his bad side you might want to watch out and work hard to show that you care. The only reason that I did well was because I worked like a dog
The lectures were very interesting. You will learn a lot from Simon. However, I felt his test format was very hard to study for. Participation and attendance count towards your grade. Also do not get on his bad side. He loses his temper very easily.
Avoid!
Worst professor ever!
If you like your gpa and or want to go to graduate school then you should not take this guy's classes. He will ruin your gpa and future prospects. He gets off by having power & control over his students. Does not care about the students and will probably report this comment because he can't handle the truth. THANKS FOR NOTHING!
Really the worst professor I've ever taken in my life!
Viva La Stool!
He lets you know from jump what kind of class it will be, you cant expect to agree to be there even and be shocked when he doesnt help you down the line. If you just seem even mildly interested in what youre learning hell help you out on the exams. Textbook wasnt used but he does a book check!!!
Prof. Simon is an exceptional instructor. He teaches many areas of history (American, European, Middle Eastern, East Asian, South Asian, History of Science, etc.). Simon is not for the lazy or indifferent student, but if you show up and participate, he will make it well worth your while. You can see he cares about the topic and the students..
I dont complain much, but during class I had to use the bathroom really bad, and while I got up to leave, he told me to sit back down, and I went anyways, at the end of class he told me to stay behind and told me I was very rude to leave class during his lecture. I really did not like that
No papers but there is a midterm and a final based off of his lectures which are heavy and will call you out if you are caught not taking notes where he comes off as a bit rude to his students where he uses an aggressive tone. Was looking forward to the class but the outcome was disappointing.
This professor is tough but fair. His lectures are interesting. You have to enjoy history. Show listen and take notes that is what's important. This is why I say he is fair. He the professor you the student give respect and he will do the same. I will definitely have him as a professor.
Theres are no homeworks or papers, but there are two tests based off the lectures that are extremely detailed and theres a lot to memorize. No multipke choice. Lectures are also super hard because u have to write a lot and fast. If u dont show that ur interested he wont like you and it has a bad effect on your grade.
Excellent professor, gave a powerful speech during the first class that helped me stick to my current path in college. Very passionate about the subject, very strict on putting away phones. If you show up majority of the time, show reasonable effort, and study your lecture notes you will do well.
Professor. Simon is an absolutely great Professor and instructor. He is fair, knowledgeable, and is an absolutely amazing lecturer. you will learn a lot if you enroll in his class. Be prepared to take good notes and do not skip his class or he will fail you. Two exams in this course. Class participation matters. Also, show up on time!
Everyone who complained underneath is just lazy and want an easy A. Yes you have to show up consistently and take notes but he gives you up to 3 absences. His exams are detailed but for upper courses he is easier on grading. Ive also taken him for winter and he is BEYOND fair, easy even due to open notes. You earn your grade clearly.
Lets you know every historical figures astrological sign like thats even remotely important information. No review sheets. He is wicked smart though just be prepared to take lots of notes.
this guy is the GOAT. he is intimidating but deep down he really does care about his students so much. he is extremely smart, and his lectures are so amazing and entertaining. You will learn so much from him.
Don't take this class if your native language is not English. You don't allow to use lab top or electronic devices to take notes on class. You can record his lecture though. If you're not interested in history, don't take this class in order to complete your general education!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!Ever!!Never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First day of class: History isnt about memorization. But both midterm and final are based on rote memorization of his lectures lmao. No review sheet either. Take a different professor thatll actually help you learn.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA! His lectures are heavy and fast pace. You're not allowed to use the restroom during his lectures and he only give 5 mins break. No cellphones or any type of devices allowed. Two required books, a midterm and a final. No extra credit. AND he's VERY rude. I REPEAT, DO NOT!
Prof. Mark Simon can teach any history topic, and often does. He offers courses in European History, History of South East Asia, Islamic Middle East, Iran, the Far East, and many other areas. He loves history, he loves to teach, and students learn so much in his classes. If you are a serious student, take his class. If not, don't.. .
If you have the capacity to never cross paths with this man in your life I strongly advise that you don't. I was unable to retain any information in this class as history is not simply about memorization but, have fun explaining that to the arrogant bully that is Mark Simon. It's typical Simon to give you a D+ rather than fail you. Never again.
Get ready to write because his tests are based off the lectures which are heavy. Don't get caught on the phone or not writing and be punctual. He cares about his students but does not tolerate nonsense. He can come off as rude and arrogant but it did not affect how I did. If anything, he was pretty fair, if not generous with grading.
One of the greatest professors I have ever taken. He was so kind and his love for teaching really showed. His lectures were very informative. He was engaged with his students and made learning history very interesting. As long as you show effort in the class and study the notes he gives you, this class is simple to pass.
If you prefer reading the book and spacing out during class, this teacher isn't for you. Take a lot of notes during class and memorize the stuff before the exams. Only one midterm and final. No homework or essays. I highly recommend him for students who don't like English class but are good at memorization.
A lot of people hate him for how strict he is and the fact that he doesn't use slides, but I LOVED and admired him sm. He was so inspirational and moving. He embodied my love for history entirely. I took him twice but, the second time, he had to quit suddenly because of cancer. RIP, my inspiration, my icon. I will always remember you
Better place without him 🤷‍♂️
Definitely looking up at us now!
