Great teacher! Very informative, definitely knows his stuff. The tests are essay and not easy. I'm sure that he will probably get bad reviews on here because of that, but if you really study for them they are doable!
he is a good professor and know his stuff, but give to much materials to study without giving any review that said whats the test about...the test are hard and has to be written on essays...and didn't like that at all. he should give less material to study!!!
Does not use a textbook. The assignments are only worth 10pts, however you spend hours typing up responses that are up to 8 pg. sometimes. Only cares about deadlines, will penalize you harshly. Far too much work for an simple history class. I do Not reccomend! Take somone who is into you and learning vs. simply going through the motions.
DO NOT TAKE this prof. has a 1-page, 10 pt font, single spaced outline due EVERY class. only graded on 2 exams, homework, & participation - but this guy loves the sound of his own voice, so good luck getting in a word. exams are 100% essay writing. nothing is ever good enough for this guy - don't know anyone in the class w/ an "A."
this guy knows his history. he can go on forever and talk. there are 2 test in the semester. it is divided into a take home essay and in class test. u have to study alot for the in class essay because they r essay tests. do the hw! it will boast up ur grade. overall its alot of work, but hard work pays off.
Great teacher, hard class, if you're lazy and don't take notes that is. This isn't a high school class, it's a college class. Tests are essays, but if you pay attention and take good notes, and then study you'll do good. I had him for 2010 and 2020 and got an A both times so no, it's not impossible!
there are 2 test during the whole semester but they are essay. The trick to getting a good grade is good writing, no gramatical errors, and effective introductions that show a relationship. If you ask the teacher he will tell you what you need to do to get an A.Not a class for lazy people, but a class for people that truly want to learn.
I took him for AMH 2010 and 2020. He is a good professor, really knows his stuff. The class is not for lazy people, you will take alot of notes. The weekly assignments were a pain but they do relate to the lesson plan. Pay attention, take notes, do the weekly assignments and you should do decent. You work for your grade.
solid teacher, very smart. you have to be self-disciplined for this class. ALL CLASS WORK IS DONE AT HOME. all assignments are submitted online prior to class. work at your own pace basically. his syllabus will make him seem like a hard-ass but he is much more flexible on his rules. late assignments can be accepted and he rarely does role.
I took his class in spring 08, and hated every minute of it there was no text book, just print outs, and you had to write an essay for almost every class.
I took the on-line class and all I can say is, be ready to work, be ready to read, and you must remember all you have read. The (2) test are mainly based on what you remember from the readings of past assignments. His grading was fair most of the time and assignments were graded timely with feed back. If you don't like essay's don't take this class
This class is not easy. He is boring, and I dropped out because I couldn't take it.
Mr Smith is awesome, there is a lot of writing in his class but he is clear as to what he expects from you and was very willing to help me out. If you dont like this class it is because you are lazy. I will be taking one of his classes next semester
This class does require some critical thinking on the webct assignments, you read a 3 page essay and have to analyze it, theres 18 assignments in all. Theres a midterm & final and there all essay questions. Attendance is a must, cant miss more then 3 classes, cant be more than 15 mins late. Kind of boring, he has a sense of humor though.
this class consists of two tests, an essay, and about 16 homework assignments(one due on every class meeting), all of this is worth only a 100 points so watch out becuz if u miss more then 10 points on anything your grade will drop down to a B. but overall he's a wonderful professor, and funny! but i warn you, you must have good writing skills.
Do not take this class unless you are willing to write a 7-8 page paper every week! This is not a history course, it is an English composition course...seriously. You write so much and his grades are based on your writing skills not your knowledge of the topic. He has many strict rules for writing and expects it to be perfection. Tough grader.
Terrible Proffessor, the content was great and very interesting, but he starts out the semester telling you in so many words that you will not get a good grade in that class. Sad because I was really interested in learning more about my countries history.
AMH 2010- This professor is hard as hard can be. He won't overlook any mishaps you may have. If you like writing this is your class otherwise look elsewhere! I love history and like writing but there seems to be seriously no winning with him. If you can avoid taking him, I would so recommend it!
THIS MAN IS THE WORST!!!! HE HAS A CERTAIN WAY THAT HE WANTS YOU TO WRITE HIS PAPERS BUT HE IS VERY PICKY IF YOU FEEL YOUR PAPER DESERVES AN A HE WILL GIVE YOU A C AND MAKE SURE YOU DO THE DISCUSSIONS THOSE REALLY HELPED ME GET THE C THAT I HAVE THEY ARE WORTH POINTS. I STUCK WITH HIS CLASS BUT WOULDN'T TAKE HIM EVER AGAIN.
Took this class online. No textbook required but that just made it harder since you had to visit 7 websites or read his essays to do your assignment every week. This is a stupid way to teach a class!
There is no textbook required, so I thought the class would be hard. But it was amazing. He's a great professor, really knows his history. The class is easy.
Hes a cool professor in person but useless when its test time. he doesnt even provide a study guide and expects u to remember all the material hes taught the entire semester. grades very hard, DONT TAKE HIM unless u are willing to dedicate 24 hours a day to studying western civilization, not worth it!!!!!!!!!!
worst teacher at valencia i wish i never took him. he seems like a nice and understanding prof. in person, but when it comes to grades hes ruthless. he grades extremely hard. dont take this course unless you are willing to fail. seriously, hes the worst teacher at this school. your lucky if you even get a D
Dr. Smith should not be teaching this class. His grading makes no sense and he only grades on writing and grammar, NOT HISTORY! He has no passion for History or his class and is very rude in his grading. I came into this class excited and loving History, as I still love History, I am very disappointed with Dr. Smith and his class. Not recommended.
He is a great teacher and you can tell that he has passion for what he does. You will learn in his class. He only has two tests and they are both essays. His notes come from powerpoints. Last semester I passed with a C but that is cause I didn't study notes. This semester I am taking him for 2020 and I have a B. And I studies this time.Study though
Interesting class.
I've taken Professor Smith for both of my history classes. He's an absolutely wonderful professor. He genuinely cares about the students and will help you if you just ask. You can tell that he loves what he teaches. It's an easy A if you just DO THE WORK. His tests are essay response, but as long as you've come to class, you'll know how to answer.
I took Professor Smith for both of my American History classes! He was definitely interesting in class! Always cheerful and willing to help! There are two test and homework everyweek! The stuff is easy if you read it! TAKE HIM!
Very tough teaher, took his online class and it was an extremely bad idea. I usually get A's in history I got a B in his class only after doing about 6 hours of homework a week. If you dont like to study or write essays this probaly isnt the techer for you
This teacher is unreasonable, strict and unrelenting. If your work is not perfect (grammar, spacing, etc), expect a 0 on your assignments. Do not take this professor. A complete waste of my time.
I didn't learn any AMH, more of the AMH in sociology, like letters written to others but never facts like the Boston Tea Party, etc. I have just personally found this class to have been a complete WASTE OF TIME and money, not once were we told to use the course textbook, he's either an adjunct or a very new professor... two thumbs down.
I took him online and he is an okay teacher you have to put a lot into his class if you wanna pass. he does not use a textbook and gives you things to read. The reading each week takes the longest but if you dont mind that and a lot of writing he is a good teacher.
BEST TEACHER EVER! Just a module per week, and since he has PHD in History, he knows his stuff and doesn't require a book. Only a midterm and final which are ESSAYS! It can't be anyeasier in my opinion, he has no multiple tests, which was super for me, I LOVED THIS CLASS! And I hate history, but Mr. Smith made it interesting.
Decent class. Book isn't needed. Class is all powerpoint lecture, but he often lets you out early. Attendance is highly recommended as exams are all from notes. Grade is composed of a midterm, final, and 10 homework submissions. The exams are 10 short answer questions, and 2 essays. Very understanding. I got an A, and would recommend. TAKE NOTES!
Professor Smith is a very straight forward and clear. Long lecture with slides, TAKE NOTES. 2 exams made of 10 short essay questions. Weekly homework: time consuming online reading followed by 2-3 discussion questions. Very consistent, reasonable, professional and a very knowledgeable teacher. Solid class, not an easy A though, but not hard either.
I took his class online for dual enrollment and it was the worst decision I have ever made!!! I am usually an A student but after working extreemely hard in this class I barely pulled a B! Every week there are 2-4 long essays due and be ready to read read read TONS of material each week. These assignments took me between 5-7 hours a week. The work was overbearing and each of these assignments were only worth 4 points!!!!! DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!! please save yourself the time.
Professor Smith isn't the easiest teacher I've ever had, but I would definitely recommend him. Just be ready to take lots of notes. You don't need a book, but those essays... They're tough... His homework is easy, you get to redo if you mess up so don't stress. Just pay attention and you'll be fine. :)
No empathy, If you think you got a A on an essay, you most likely got a C. Extremeley picky about evrything!
I love history, but this class was borderline dreadful. No textbook, but long essays, letters, and documents to readI could barely get through the ones he wrote for all the writing errors. If you write like he asks, you will do well on assignments. Don't expect to learn hostory, just how to analyze and write about it.
Pay attention in class and do the on line readings and you should easily pass.
Good class. If you do the work on time you’ll probably get an A or B. He allows you to do work over if you need to. You don't have to buy a book.
I liked this class. The assignments weren't too hard. The readings were better than a boring textbook.
Not that hard and no textbook to buy. He doesn’t make you remember a lot of names and dates. All the tests are open book.
Class wasn't bad at all. He's a helpful teacher and the workload isn't bad. The readings were easier and more interesting than a textbook; no textbook needed. Do the work on time and you'll get a good grade.
I've had four classes with Mr. Smith. Got A's in all of them. Some of the readings are hard, but the assignments were pretty easy.
This is the worse I have ever seen, he is not helpful, he would not communicate with the students, it is very hard to understand his assignments, he expect the student to know it all before he even teach. There is no other way but his, and he does not explain clearly what he really want the students to do. Please, avoid this teacher.
Good class. Just do the work and you'll get an 'A'. The one's who complain don't want to do the work.
I liked the class. No book to buy. Write every week, but short assignments. All tests are take home.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! I mean if you have no social life and like reading about 8-10 pages a week only to answer 2 question and a quick discussion and then when your finally done with the last modules he slap with three essay each having to be 1000-1500 words and only 16 days to do it. I took him online and I absolutely loath this class.
Student Beware!!!!!The workload is just extremely annoying/unclear. His instruction are also very unclear. In my HW assignment he always said my work was ok and never got an A. When asked what he ment. His reply was "You did meet the requirements, but to get an A you have to do that and more'. Why tell me to do this if its not going to get me an A
He is a good professor. I really loved his lectures. He just grades too tough. His homework and questions to the test can be confusing. I started with a B to get to an A but it took for ever. Then after the first test I just gave up. Don't take him!!!
I took him for American History. His lectures are interesting and he always lets you out early, attendance isn't mandatory. There are only two tests, and he grades them ridiculously hard with explanations like "it was generally okay." Even putting in full effort and being a good student it is impossible to make an A. I would not recommend taking it
This was not an easy course, but the assignments were manageable. He provides the reading material, you summarize it into one 250-300 coherent paragraph, and then you post a discussion. I took the 10-week course; it was a lot of reading, interesting topics tho. The Final was tough 3 - 1000-1500 word papers, w/ 10-15 sources each. Overall Good Class
Professor is a bit of a wacka-doo, so if you don't mind a little bit of silly amongst the serious, do not take. Also, be aware that he DOES NOT REQUIRE A TEXTBOOK.
Although I enjoy this class, I kinda was expecting this to be about inventions and wars and stuff about social changes. Instead it kinda is a little bit like an English class, with narratives, but that's OK.
This teacher is a friendly guy and fun to be around. But he is ridiculously hard when it comes to grading homeworks and exams. Only rarely allows redo. When choosing a history class, choose wisely. Otherwise, he's a good guy and fun to hang out with. He can be funny.
He's an amazing person who really loves students and interacting with them during lecture. His class was probably the easiest course I've ever taken. If you do the homework you will easily pass and his lectures are actually very interesting and he's very funny. He always lets class out super early! Overall a great class (I usually hate history)
A summarized paragraph of the assigned reading is due every class day by 6am. He expects a lot from each paragraph. If you're a strong writer, you should be fine, but he's a tough grader.
Took online Fall 2014. No required textbook. He supplies 3 readings/week. 1 analysis per week Final Exam paper on readings. Lots of analysis per reading, bit like an englishclass. Followguidelines exactly in structure, he will not tell you what you messed up on (its just a thesis and body paragraph(s)), he just give grade and leave you to fig. out
Prof. Smith makes class so enjoyable. You can tell he really loves the material. I always had fun in class, and his lectures are probably the most interesting I have ever had. Homework is a lot of writing. He's super tough on grading. He will only tell you "good" or "okay" or "wasn't what I was looking for." Would still recommend him though.
Do not take this professor! Just like an English class, you have to read Shakespeare written papers and come up with an analysis on that paper. He does not tell you what you did wrong on the papers, you must figure it out yourself.
Be prepared to have a ton of homework with a lot of reading and writing. Lectures were explained well but homework was difficult. Extremely tough grader. If you dont submit an assignment correctly be prepared to receive an F
Feedback is given way before grade. Feedback seems incredibly harsh and unfair, but in my experience the grading was much lighter than expected based off feedback. If you follow the guidelines exactly the class is very doable. Reading is tedious but not too terrible. Makes you work for it that's for sure.
Very difficult course. I took it online and it requires a ton of reading every assignment. The grading is really harsh and he grades you on your writing versus your understanding of the subject which doesn't make sense.
I regret taking his class very much. He gives very bad and unclear feedback. He grades your writing with things like "unsatisfactory" or "good" without saying how to do better. I am a straight A student and this was my first B even though I tried very hard. It was basically a writing class.
His classes are great, very interesting and well organized. He makes classes fun. With that being said, he is an incredibly tough grader. Gives very unclear and harsh feedback. I'm a good writer, got A's in all my writing intensive courses. With him? Nope. Barely getting a C. No extra credit, no redo's, homework for every single class. Avoid him
I took his online class, and he has a great set up with sources and assignments. 1 discussion and 2 replies every 5 assignments and 2 paragraphs a week. But when it comes to grading, he gives horrible feedback "satisfactory overall, fairly good, somewhat poor, and poor overall." He is also hard to reach.
"Vague, not responding to the topic."
Worst professor I have ever taken. I am a student with a 4.0 Gpa, I study regularly, and I am a good essay writer, however, when it came to this class I and many others apparently had no idea how to write an essay. This is more of a composition class rather than a history class. I highly recommend you take another professor.
Professor seems more concerned with pushing his political agenda than providing a quality learning experience. My best friend and I took the class together and are 4.0 GPA students, but we received a B from this professor. If you don't write about oppression you will not pass this class.
His feedback on assignments is terrible he says things like needs improvement or good. I had to figure out on my own how to pass his class I recovered from a D to a B.
STAY AWAY!!! I am a 4.5 GPA student & I ended up with a C. Hardest class I've ever taken. The material was okay, but he grades so harshly there is no way to do well. Harsh HW assignments every class day. Class started with 30 people, the semester ended with 12. This was not a history class, it was Intro To Socialism due to his extreme leftist views
He is absolutely the worst professor I have taken at Valencia so far. His lectures are so pointless because your grade is dependent on daily paragraphs that are based off of heavy reading passages provided online. He does not give much feedback as to how you can improve your writings. I recommend you find a better professor at a different campus.
Mark Smith is a terrible professor. You literally have to read several pages of gibberish and are expected to write a perfect paragraph. If you don't, he will destroy your grade. Stay away, highly recommended you find another professor.
Taking this class online. It takes several hours to do the work, which wouldn't be so bad if assignments weren't graded so harshly. There doesn't seem to be a way to get a high grade in this class. The feedback he gives tends to be vague. I found this class extremely frustrating and advise that you find a different teacher.
75% of your grade is based on paragraphs with solely a guideline and not a rubric. Classes consist of PowerPoint lectures based on pictures of the teaching material. Time consuming paragraphs are critiqued in a manner that portrays a "must be this way" form of grading. Missing two paragraphs could result in a withdrawal worthy situation. Poor exp.
Run and never look back... He is terrible!!
This professor writes his own word doc text book and only gives you a letter grade every 5 due dates. So you don't know where you fall till it's to late. You could follow the syllabus and he put will still mark you poorly. His feedback is less 10 words, this man may know history but he is not meant to be teaching.
Very bland explanations as to what you are doing incorrectly. Sets you up for failure.
By far the worst class I've taken in my life. I spend hours trying to write the perfect 250-350 word paragraph, and no matter how hard I try, it's always "too vague" or "satisfactory". Very difficult to pass even if you're a good writer. He gives very little feedback, so it's hard to understand where you need extra work.
Dr. Smith is the most unprofessional professor I have ever had. He does not grade clearly, and his feedback on your paragraphs are vague. Stay far away from this class.
So he does know what he's teaching. The Homework is the actual problem. 75% for 25 paragraphs throughout the course but he grades them way too harsh. 22 of my 25 were below satisfactory because of the thesis. At the end of the semester you have to take some of those paragraphs to create an essay which would be easy unless he never approved of them.
Good teacher, but 250-350 word paragraphs are due twice a week, along with reading the long chapters for the paragraphs. Really difficult to do really well on the paragraphs due to the tough grading
This is the worst class that I have/will ever take. He does not stick to his grading criteria and is very vague when he grades assignments. He makes you read these long sections of the textbook and all that I focused on was finishing assignments instead of learning about U.S. history. Do not take his class under any circumstances.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! It will ruin your life. I took a whole semester and learned NOTHING. He is by far the worst professor I have EVER had.
The class focuses on all the bad things that have happened in history and people being oppressed. His feedback is very vague and harsh. His textbook if you can even call it that is mainly just speeches or writings from historical people. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing and to be graded harshly with nothing to back that grade.
do not choose this professor , he does not doing history . he is horrible . i had to withdraw from this class because i could not take his scraps anymore . 20 assignment to write with 250 to 300 words . he never satisfied with your homework .you have only 10 minutes to take quiz including an essay .
Very tough grader, never satisfied with the work you do. Withdrew because every week, there are 2 assignment with a minimum of 300 words, but every time he graded mine, I got zero points. Constantly says "You missed the point" but answered the question that he asked. Very frustrated throughout the entire class. Never lectures on anything of value.
Not a good History class. No textbook, no rubric. Professor supplied articles were the only allowed sources. All assignments based on minority POV, and are either thesis' or characterizing content. His emphasis is on writing and minorities. Feedback is minimal and he does not seemed very concerned with helping students or US History.
He is a terrible professor and makes me super stressed. His grading criteria are super unfair and have constantly a lot of paragraphs to write. If English is not your best subject, then I recommend NOT to take his class. Overall his lectures are somewhat interesting but the work for that night is nothing like what you learn in class.
A 250-400 word paper is due at 6 AM on each class day. Each took me 2-3 hours to read and write, sometimes he assigns a homework over a 6000+ word document, really stressful to get done in one day. If you write a bad thesis, I'm sorry, that assignment's getting a 0. It's awful to watch your grade slowly sink when you mess up one simple sentence.
Stay away tough grader and gives very vague feedback. Just barely passed this class with a 70.
If you don't know how to write an academic thesis, don't take this class. That's basically the entirety of the course. I liked it, but many others thought he graded too hard, and your grade is dependent on the bi-weekly 2 point assignments you do. + He has you aggregate them at the end, so if you did mediocre all semester it shows.
Okay, he is a good professor and explains the topics easily. However, he is a tough greater and gives you paragraph due at 6 am the day we have class. He does explain his style of grading and it is a little ridiculous. He is a very funny and cool professor. If you aren't good at writing or don't like to do too much work, don't take him.
I found it may have been easier taking his class in person but for an online course on top of others, I would not recommend. Rather than grading the overall paper on the material, he focuses a lot on the thesis. If you get the thesis wrong but about write what he is requesting, you WILL get a D.
This professor was very stubborn, he expects to have all assignments done up to his standards or its unacceptable. Grading is very harsh and he shows no compassion or understanding to his students feelings. Once you figure out his perfect outline for papers you should do just fine. Dont expect to learn more than the provided textbook knowledge.
Had a 40% in the class up until the last few weeks it raised slightly. Still holding my breath in this class to pass, assignments are impossible. This class has more work than any class I've ever taken, but good lecturers and funny guy. Horrible feedback and lengthy readings due every class.
This class was supposed to be history however I felt like an advanced English class. The only thing you do is write thesis statements and papers. Does not have clear grading criteria but all the work must be up to his standards. Also does not care about your grades or feelings. Horrible professor.
On everything that keeps this world together never take this professor. By far the most troublesome class, he doesn't care about the individual but rather the standards of the thesis so if you do them incorrectly good luck passing. Had to email 3 times till he told me what was wrong. Take any other professor you have a higher chance passing.
He is not awful, but not the best by a longshot. Online class has a provided textbook with standards, samples, and sources every assignment. You NEED to follow it, and you need to know how to write a clear thesis. Gives vague responses to grades. Once you understand the format, you will be fine. Feels more like a composition class, but not bad.
This teacher grades super hard, and ALL the assignments are based on long articles that are very boring. He grades his assignments super hard, basically to the point where if you dont have the same thesis as him, you arent gonna get a good grade. This course requires a lot of time, patience, and frustration.
His grading makes no sense, based on "standards" that out of all of them if you don't meet just one despite the textbook telling you otherwise, no more than a C. Focuses on the thesis too much. For an online class the work isn't bad, but every submission you play a guessing game as to what he'll grade you. He isn't the worst, but FAR from good.
The interactions in class was applicable.
It seems that his grading has become much more firm and uptight. This class is hard for multiple reasons, but the most prominent being how he grades the work. He does not give personalized feedback and when he does it is vague and doesn't allow me to improve the quality of future assignments. Has high expectations. Gives C's and D's if not perfect.
If you aren't a good writer, don't take this class. The interpretation assignments which is about 3/4 of what you do are straightforward, but it comes down to your thesis. You aren't going to get by doing the bare minimum. He may be the only choice if you're taking it online, but if you do the work and use the standards provided you should do fine.
THE WORST! No tests/textbook is what drew me into this class but I then I realized that made no sense and neither does this teacher. Lectures are just watching him go through a slide show that doesn't even make sense. 2 paragraph writing assignments a week that you either get a 0 or a 100 no in-between. I got a 0 once bcuz I spelled ONE word wrong!
Assignments are not too difficult, but his grading is absolutely ruthless. I like to write, however he has given Ds and Fs on some of my assignments because my thesis is vague and not covering the issue when it was. He also gives little personal feedback. His class is manageable though, so if hes your only option you can get through it.
So far one of the worst professors Ive ever had. I took this class online and although the work load isnt bad, he is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Constantly says, thesis is too vague which doesnt help me improve in any shape or form. If you are not good at writing, dont take this class.
OK, yes this class is different from a normal history class and it focuses on another perspective (i.e social problems.) There is lots of reading and he cares about the thesis a lot. For an online class, it is not bad and some of the assignments were interesting. If you aren't a good writer, then don't take it but for me this class was fine.
Assignments are 2 short papers each week based on stories you read/class content, and one final essay. Thesis is nearly impossible to get, based on his objective opinion on what "you should have figured out." feedback on papers is vague, not helpful, and is sarcastic a demeaning manner. Avoid at all costs! The dean is the only one that can help!
Feedback isnt much at all , homework are essays which barely make sense and a tough grader . Lectures honestly just consist of what he wanted you to do for homework so its hard to take notes. If you ask for help hell just say its best to withdrawal and i couldnt withdraw Im on financial aid. Wouldnt take him again .
I took him for both AMH2010 and AMH2020. 2010 was not bad and at some points I found myself to like it. 2020 on the other hand, OH MY GOD. The whole objective of assignments make no sense. You'd have better chances playing Russian roulette than getting an acceptable thesis, which he gives ZERO personal feedback on. Find another professor.
This professor is an extremely touch grader, almost impossible to pass this class. Will give you a D just because your thesis is weak. Which is ridiculous. Avoid this professor at all costs
Took this class with hopes to have a fun online class and learn about our countries history but it was mostly focused on one feminist final exam prompt that every single assignment is based off. Doesn't email back when asking for help and when he does after multiple emails, short responses. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AND SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME AND MONEY!
He isn't the worst professor I've taken, but by no means is this a good class. Online class is full of long, boring articles about oppression of minorities and you have to come up with a thesis connecting them. If it isn't 100% perfect you WILL get a C or D. No individual feedback. Eventually you figure out what he wants in assignments but still...
Practically he grades off a perfect thesis statement. He gives you a "textbook" where you read 3 or more articles that are based on the assignments and discussions for the week. It is a sad class and he recently said my writing skills are bad and should consider proofreading which led me here to warn others. Might have to retake a different class.
If you dont know to write a paper, dont take this course. Most of the assignments are paragraphs he treats like an essay. He is a tough grader and very picky. Gives feedback but its very bland and makes no sense. I will say it has helped my writing get better, but some of my assignments he gave me D's on because I didnt follow his standards.
This professor is the hardest grader Ive had so far. He focuses too much on the thesis and often will give a C or lower if it is not perfect to him. His feedback is very vague and does not help make improvements in the assignments at all. The readings are long but tolerable. class lectures include a long PowerPoint and do not help at all either.
His "feedback" is less than 3 sentences and is always the same "look beyond the obvious" which doesn't help at all. What you're supposed to do is connect 3-4 sources into a thesis but all of them are broad and focus on different things. No matter how hard I tried, he always said "too general" or "not the issue". I'd recommend another professor.
As a student with a high GPA, I was surprised to find myself with a D in a class so silly and extraneous. The professor offers very few points and takes them seemingly on a whim. For example, some assignments only have 2 points meaning you'll get a 50 % for even one mistake. This class DOES NOT FUNCTION, BEWARE
Oh. Dear. God. After taking this class I will not look up my professors again! I can tell you that I learned absolutely nothing in this class except how to continuously ask or help. I had to email my professor for every essay just to get an A- on those essays. On my other assignments, I would get a 0 and he wouldn't say why. All in all worst class!
Honestly this is the worst class I have ever taken, this professor is the HARDEST grader I had so far. He has HIGH expectations for assignments so if you don't know how to write I wouldn't recommend this professor. He is very vague and bland with feedback if the assignment doesn't follow his standards prepare to get D's and F's.
I always took RMP reviews with a grain of salt bcuz I took some bad-rated professors that were good. After taking Smith I will NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! This is the worst class ever, he gives no feedback and only cares on your thesis and writing, all you'll be doing is emailing him for help and he'll say zero. SAVE YOUR SANITY AND MONEY!!
Took his online class during the summer and he is the worst prof i ever had. He barely grades by his rubric. You read really long and boring essays and then do a small writing assignment which seems easy but he always says you need to be more specific or look for the bigger picture. He gives the worst feedback, he is so vague that it kills me.
This professor is bar none the worst one Ive had to date. unreasonable grading and awful comments that provide little to no feedback on why you are continuously bombing assignments. You will feel helpless while taking this course and your only way of passing this class is to email him 5-6 times a day for revisions just to get a B.
I am saddened to say that I learned pretty much nothing about our country's history. Professor assigned readings that only focused on the struggles of African Americans and women. I would love to have learned more about the WWII, the Great Depression, Cold War, Vietnam, etc. but did not.
He doesnt even know what he wants himself. Sources don't relate to each other at all--- BOGUS.
I took this class thinking it would be American history but it's just a composition class. There is no studying of actual history, and no textbook- it's all just repetitive writing assignments and he does not teach you anything, literally. He will give you a C without telling you, even if you followed his criteria exactly. Disappointed...
He was pretty bad overall. He would give you just the "rubric", but then fail you because 1) you didn't e-mail him for nearly EVERY assignment to get his historian opinion 2) Didn't meet the expectations that he didn't state. Gives just 1 assignment per week, and its A LOT of reading. Don't take this class unless you are ready to work REALLY hard
Dont bother taking this class, if youre not good at writing.
Rubric is unclear. Feedback is useless. Rude and uncaring of his students. Delivers the course as though he doesn't care about the subject. He grades on criteria that is not included in the assignment. I do not recommend this person as a professor. It is obvious he does not like students.
He's available only until 11am (ridiculous). It's required to contact him 5 days before the assignment's due for help (also ridiculous). His "help" on assignments is vague and COMPLETELY unhelpful. I got C's on my well-composed work JUST BECAUSE with no explanation. If you don't read his mind, it's a C- for that 2-hour assignment. DON'T take this!
Just as what you expected from others. Every Assignment and Context Summary will be graded a C- if you dont contact him. Even if you follow his rubric and follow it to the teeth and understand the topic, hell still give you a C- with no feedback to why hes giving you that grade. I dont recommend this professor, even if youre Interested.
At first, I struggled with this course. It requires a lot of analyzing of sources & writing. He grades harshly, but the best advice I can give is to be precise w/ writing and look at the overall theme of all the sources collectively. Great course material that is accessible, no textbook just a word doc. Feedback is helpful- keep an open dialogue!
The absolute worst! Unreasonable grading and awful comments that provide little to no feedback. You will definitely feel very discouraged while taking this course and he does not care at all. He requires graduate level English writing for this introductory History course. He is snobby and not encouraging at all.
Don't take this guy he has to be the worse professor in the college! He based the entire class on talking to him so you can't use other resources only him. Whenever you ask something like "is this a good thesis" he will just respond with "too vague" and he won't even explain why. You can still take the class just not this professor trust me please.
Yeah don't take this guy he has to be the worse professor in the college! He based the entire class on talking to him so you can't use other resources only him. Whenever you ask something like "is this a good thesis" he will just respond with "too vague" and he won't even explain why. You can still take the class just not this professor
He is by far the worst prof I have ever had. He makes it mandatory to talk to him about assignments (and you have to start the conversation a WEEK in advance), but the only feedback he gives is "too vague" or "be more specific." Absolutely awful, you would learn more from a botched wikipedia page than him.
His class style is very unique, while I actually didn't mind it, his problem is he's looking for something very specific and he is bad at explaining exactly what that is. By the end of the semester I understood how to get a decent grade, but the beginning was rough. Make sure to email him constantly if you have questions, if not you won't pass.
He dose not really teach, he just grades. He gives a word doc which is pretty much the textbook and all of the assignments are there. If you ask for help he talks to you like youre stupid. If you are not good at writing thesis paragraphs DO NOT TAKE. The paragraph assignments are the biggest part of your grade, do it exactly how he wants or fail.
This professor is terrible. He gives out long sources to read just so you can write a paragraph on it, and his grading scale is entirely based on how he feels at the time, you'll never be able to figure out what he actually wants from you. His feedback is terrible and vague. And to top it all off you won't even learn anything new. DONT TAKE HIM.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! In all my school career I have never had a teacher more dreadful than him. He does not grade fairly, he'll give you a D for a "weak" thesis statement, and won't even help you to fix it if you ask. His feedback was short and no help at all, it just made me more confused. Save your money, time and suffering. Horrible prof.
PLEASE DO NOT GET THIS GUY AT ALL! He is a very strict grader, he will literally give you the worse grade if details are off. He will give you a big paragraph to read and makes you write a paragraph with specific details that if you are a bit off, goodbye a good grade. Not friendly, doesn't give feedback besides "see page 6" on the comments. Bad
PLEASE DON'T take this class. He doesn't teach. Want to learn history? This isn't the class. He asks for something complex and insightful but your assignments are to be vague and lack detail otherwise you lose points. 3 mandatory assignments each week, only 1 affects your grade. Only reading, no other forms of learning. Feedback is unhelpful.
I should have looked at this site before I picked him as a professor. I have never had a worse experience. You get two assignments a week, one being a discussion the other being an outline or paragraph. Even if you follow his guidelines youll still get a C or D. Make sure you can read his mind or youll fail.
This professor does not teach the class, and all of the assignments for the class are writing assignments that require you to read his mind to get a halfway decent grade. He provides zero feedback on what you could do differently or what he expects. I feel that I haven't learned anything since there is no textbook. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
I took this class thinking I would be fine considering it was an online history class. BUT NO every assignment is on a confusing word document. If he doesn't approve the 'email dialogue' your most likely guaranteed a bad grade. His 'feedback' is the worse I have seen. He is very specific on assignments and very rude I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROF!!!!
Only reason I didn't give an F is because he accepts emails to review your work (which I didn't do), but even those who did take him up on that would not get an A. He'd show the highest, medium, and lowest scores per assignment and highest anyone got was an 88. If your format isn't to his liking then C, regardless of how well you write the subject.
The first class that I EVER had to drop. The class makes no sense, you basically reading novels and writing professor-level summaries. He has a God complex. When you ask him for help, he will make you feel inferior for even questioning him. Every email he sent me made me feel like I was the stupidest person ever. DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM
Horrible professor, If you don't follow his vague rules for the assignments he will require you to redo the entire assignment without telling you what you did wrong or fail the assignment, he requires you to submit assignments 3 days in advance only for him to "review" it and if you don't the highest grade you can get is a C. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I thought I was mediocre at writing, but he made me realize (or at least tell myself) that I was no better than a first grader. I never got an A on an assignment even though I try my hardest. When giving you feedback, he gives useless information on what to fix, yet any mistakes fixed seem to create more issues.
DO NOT TAKE. this man was a waste of my money. I know I am a good student and even with the unclear directions and trying my very hardest i could never get anything higher than a C on any assignments like 0 mercy. you can see the averages on assignments that other students got and often an F was the average and redemption is defnot an option either
Only take this class if you want to learn about all the failures of America and you took highly advanced writing classes. All you do is write about oppression. On top of that, you have to make a "thesis" statement every week and have it reviewed by him. Feedback is fine.
The professor is cold and cryptic. You only get a A for doing "Above and beyond" (no one knows what it is). The best you can usually get is a B if you complete all the criteria. Honestly, if I meet all the said requirements I expect to be paid 100% of my pay, not 80%? I we go above and beyond we should have extra credits which there are not.
Okay I will make this as clear as possible for someone wanting to go with this professor. Nothing wrong with the class but the professor. Here is what it feels like to take his class: Professor Smith: What is 2 +2? Me: 4 Professor Smith: Wrong. Me: Could you explain? Professor Smith: Too vague and not specific enough. Don't do it, at all.
Worst professor I have ever had. No matter how much effort you put into the class, he is never going to give you a perfect grade. He has given me 1.9/2 on most discussion assignments and NO valid reason. It does not make any sense at all. He drops your grade for minimum mistakes that were not even addressed on the rubric. Don't waste your time.
I see many people complaining about this professor and in my opinion, it's probably from people that didn't read the syllabus. Yes, he is a tough professor but also he tells you exactly what you need to do and you can collaborate and ask him questions all week. This is a college-level course and you'll leave the course actually learning something.
very bad professor, no clear for what he need to be done. Obsessive with Afro American and LGBTQ community.
Worst professor I've ever had! Terrible class with poor direction, awful feedback, harsh grading and extremely limited teacher involvement. Professor Smith clearly has no interest in teaching his students and the student feedback clearly demonstrates this. When 95% of your students wouldn't take you again you have failed as a teacher!
Do NOT take this professor! You'll Never receive a perfect score due to nit picking at every single thing. very confusing and LONG syllabus. Weekly "paragraph" assignments will end up being your final exam all in one. I do not recommend taking him for anything not even a joke.
I have hated how there is no modules organization at all (modules don't even exist) All of the coursework is slammed in a page to read and submit separately and each “assignment” is like a mini essay paragraph *7total* that in the end as a final exam you gotta do a SUMMARY for each assignment.I hope this profesor reads these ratings and do better.
This professor has a specific grading system, but if you engage with it, you can succeed. Use all resources, including unstuck study, to prepare well. Attend class, and you'll learn a lot.
No sense of reality when it comes to work/life balance.
Way too harsh, and asks inconsistent things from his students. Its eggshells between him wanting us to be a robot and wanting "genuine reactions." Very, very harsh. Takes it way too seriously.
The professor has a drive with all the class work and can be very specific about what he wants you to do and don't have much freedom to express how you analyzed the sources given. I can be a little rude sometimes.
The ratings are a bit harsh here, I will say Professor Smith is the hardest grader I have seen so far. There is no way you will get full points on an assignment it's impossible. Everything was in the syllabus which I found weird. You will have to do a lot of reading on a site where copying and pasting is limited. Rethink a different course.
