He gets annoyed when you ask him questions even though he asks "Any questions"

not helpful when i went to see him during office hours...
Hes a Sexxy Thang... I went to class for him
helpful, but unorganized. didn't teach last fewch., cuz ran out of time

He's organized and logical (with a sexy European accent)
great prof
He's helpful and approachable
didn't show when had a scheduled time to meet. Doesn't explain that good.
I only took this calculus course b/c he was teaching it. I would like to integrate him! yummy!
Mark is a nice guy and he's cool and knows his stuff. Unfortunately, his teaching skills are terrible. He doesn't explain the material very well. All the people I've talked to in class so far don't seem to learn much from him either.
Excellent teacher. Very approachable.
He's a Sexy Thang!!!!! I went to class because of him!
I love him.
Unfair marker but stick with the course till the end and he'll help you out. Examples not in the form of potential exam questions and that sucks! You'd better be able to write FAST to keep up with his notes. Very old-school Russian. Quite a funny guy so it was tough to stay mad at him.
Very good prof

Dr. S has a particular quirk about him that makes him quite likable. He's never on time for class or tests, can be quite ambiguous in explanations and you end up doing a lot of self-study to understand concepts. However, he is funny and doesn't tolerate buttheads in the class so he's cool in my books.
very good professor. as long as you pay attention in the lecture and know how to do the assignment problems, you won't have any difficulty on his exams. he knows the material inside and out and gives fairly clear explanations
worst prof ever. never on time, can't explain concepts, messy writer. if u have to have him..make sure u can teach urself and do practice questions before calss cuz he doesn't teach any concepts
wow i didn't know math was so frickin hard, he sure made it that way. Our class average was like 2 percent
Very knowledgeable and helpful instructor. However, his presentation of the material in this course was just a disaster. His teaching would be outstanding if his notes were more organized. His exams are not bad though and his marking is very fair. He cares more about your reasoning in solving a problem then the actual answer being correct.
Never on time, belittled students, gave Zero notes and exaples were always half compleated or not relivant to our class. if you asked a questions about a mark on your mid term and were wrong he would doc more marks for "wasting his time" this prof made me want to hurt him pretty much ever day... nothing like telling you students their stupid
He knows lots about math but is a terrible teacher. Doesn't come down to the level of the student, frequently comes late, is always unprepared for class, exams are very short and hard, is not consistent with notation, and can be cranky.
You'll either love or hate Mark. The course isn't easy and you'll have to pay close attention in class. But I went into the class w/o even a Math 30 background and he defied the Dean and bent over backwards to help me grasp the concepts and for that, I loved him. Great prof, but be willing to work hard. And oh such a Sexxxy accent.
Hard to understand, always late, talks down to students (in class and office hours), does not explain material in ways that are easy for anyone but himself to understand, and his tests are short, hard, and totally off topic from what you would expect. He also goes slow, and you are slammed the last 2-3 weeks. Horrible.
Awesome prof. Goes by the textbook while supplementing it with some of his own material, although in a sense it's all the same. The assignments aren't bad, but time consuming, so be ready to work hard. If you put an effort into the class, you won't have any problems with the exams and you can do extremely well in this course.
Can be really scary at the start since he's an old school Russian math prof, but if you're planning on taking a lot of uni math down the road you simply must take his class. He wants to see that you've worked hard and given the course material some thought. If you have, you'll be rewarded in the end. (plus he says funny stuff randomly in class)
mark is awesome. he's a genius so there are times when it's difficult to understand what he's talking about. just go and ask for help and he'll be more than happy to get you through the course. likes to talk about the mother land too. all in all, a good guy. A+++
Mark is an enthusiastic teacher. His jokes make the class much more bearable once you get used to his Russian accent. The 5 min late for every class suites his character. He gets to know names quickly and he has gone out of his way to help those who require extra assistance. Sometimes the class falls behide schedule, but all and all he is great!
Holy crap is this guy good at math. Good teacher too. His exams are fair; totally based on what he taught in class. He's what I call a "math guy" though, so if you're in precalculus and don't like math you may not like him but if you're interested in math, he's great to have. The only complaint is that he's never on time, but it's not a huge deal.
Great at math, but hard to understand "his way" of doing certain things
worst teacher i ever had
I wish he could accept my way of solving questions. I was marked wrong because I didn't use HIS method... my method was more efficient and easier to understand and still showed the same amount of work, also after a 2 months in his class, I still haven't received my first assignment back. Not impressive.
This is honestly one of the worst teachers i have ever had. you cant understand him in class because of the accent, he doesnt explain any theory, just does the questions on the board. he wont accept any other way of answering the questions other than the way he does it, and he talks down to all the students. NOT IMPRESSED
Grrrrreat teacher, understands math very well, and teaches you the derivations for formulas so that you understand why they are being used and it's not so difficult to remember them. Very bright teacher, doesn't even need to bring notes with him to class, just spits everything out right from his head.
best prof ever! very care about students.very helpful!
Good prof. He was extremely knowledgeable, and always willing to help. One downside is that when he finds a concept that he believes the class should already know (but they obviously don't) he just says "you should know that" rather than teaching the concept.
this course for me was TOUGH!! im not much of a math person and I thought this class would be easy..nope think again also he scared the crap out of me...and when i did get up enough courage to ask him a question he told me cause I come to class that i should know how..YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD!
His class was so rediculous. The average on the midterm was 30% and he didn't scale the marks. Impossible class to pass, he just said that the class didn't work hard enough thats why everyone failed! Don't take his class you won't understand a thing!
This class isn't as difficult as it is demanding. I'd recommend not having many other classes in the term, inconvenient as it may be, cause this class will require LOTS of effort. Mark is a brilliant prof, although sometimes he's so far above his students that it can be hard to learn from him. A very interesting class though, that's for sure.
Very hard prof, easy to approach, but you must know your stuff. Marking is fair, the final is hard...so u must STUDY!!! Accent takes a bit of time to get used too.
Wow, I'm so impressed by the astute observations that a student must STUDY when going to University. Those of you who are surprised by this are a real credit to your profession as a student...
Brilliant mathematician. Knows how to solve problems and prove theorems in more ways than just your standard textbook methods; likes students to see there's more than one way to do things. No doubt he's passionate about math. Only complaint is that every class I've had with him he never finished the course. But his lectures are very enjoyable.
Horrible teacher!!!! Hard to understand. Hard to get help from or reason with. I did everything he said to do to be sucessful yet I was not, and I am a math person who got 94% in Pure Math 30. Only 4 out of 20 pass our midterm, and he said he marked us easy. Don't take MATH 241 with him!!!!!!
He is a smart guy but can't teach. Hard to learn from him. He takes forever to return assignments. 8 people are left in the class because everyone else was failing so they dropped. If you don't have to take this class with him DON'T. Save yourself and your sanity.
A math genius, but that's kind of his problem when it comes to first-year math courses. His explanations of simple concepts are a bit too high-level for first time students. He was also a bit disorganized in our class, changing the assign Qs several times, so I lost a lot of marks there because I didn't do the right ones.
Despite what he says exams are VERY similar to practice exams. Not an easy prof, explains the question AFTER he does it on the board. Who does that?! Run and hide because he's being teaching so long and knows this so well he's forgotten what its like for students who don't know a thing about math. With him NOT an easy class, anyone else prob fair.
Knows math inside out; not hard to get a good mark if study and UNDERSTAND material; if you don't make sure you come to him and ASK to explain, he'll be happy to help.
Mark is great! He is a little difficult to understand, but is clear if you pay attention to every word he says. He is very helpful, and funny. This class is a hard class though, do not take the 3 1 hour sessions a week!
Very knowledgable and very nice guy. Not quite as prepared or enthusiastic as could have been, but i'm not sure i wouldn't be about math 125 either.
very high grade prof if you have interest in the subject he will be your demi god. has long experience and very solid rigorous approach to the topics. be regular and use the grey matter. exceptional quality of teaching but you do need to have interest and willingness to learn. a college like macewan is very lucky to have someone like him.
Mark is a wonderful man. He will do everything he can to make sure you learn what you need to. The class is difficult for many people, but if you seek help he'll be there. He has a very soft, charming personality. Really, I adore him.
Worst prof I have ever had. If you want to go to class and learn the most confusing way to solve a problem get him, and if you dont mind the thick Russian accent and him being late every day... if I didnt have a tutor I would have died. Do not get him as a prof
good professor, but hard to understand at times.
Smart professor who absolutely hates Alberta's standard of education and wants everything done in his Russian ways.
I've had many math profs at both Grant Mac and the U of A, and I must say that Mark is the best and most inspiring of them all! I love how he shows his students different ways of doing things then just your standard textbook methods. If you go to class and work hard, his exams are totally fair. I wish I could have had him for all my math classes!
Such a hardass, so if you think you may struggle with the course you could be in trouble. He is a really wonderful and sweet man though, if you give him the chance. I loved listening to every word he said in his beautiful russian accent, I would go to his class just for that.
GREAT PROF. Does not make his assignments easy, nor his exams, but he sure does prepare you for further math courses. Very straight-up, no nonsense guy. If you try hard and show effort by asking questions and doing h/w, you will do fine. Sometimes hard to pay attention because he is so damn tough, rugged and SEXY. Great sense of humour too!
Fair exams, easy marker, and a very nice guy. Enjoyable lectures, and is very approachable outside of class. He really likes students who are good at math, and show effort.. Not so much if you dont like the class though and put in minimal effort
Hard Class! Write down every single thing he says in class and study hard! Easy marker however.
Mark is a nice guy who is willing to help if you struggle. Although he does examples all the time therefore you have no notes to follow how you get through each step. I wouldn't recommend to take math with him if you aren't good at it in the first place.
Mark is an awesome guy, but once he finds you texting or distracted during lecture times he will make you feel like crap! his notes arent the best, but the amount of marks he will give you on the exam is CRAZY(in a good way) would definitly recommend him
I would not recommend Mr. Solomonovich, especially if you struggle with math. His notes are all over the place and if you miss even one class you'll be very lost. His examples didn't apply to the majority of the homework questions or the exam questions. I was not happy with this class at all and wouldn't choose him as a teacher again.
Mark is a great prof. Let him get to know you and he becomes 10x more helpful. He has an accent, but that won't stop you from catching his witty jokes! Make sure to attend class if you are struggling, because he will help you!
Amazing prof. strong accent but very easy to follow what he says. attend every class, read book, ask for help when needed and you will do fine.*don't txt or look or touch your phone in class tho*.
Mark is a very good teacher. He is glad to help and will do what he can to make the material as comprehensible as possible, but math 241 is a hard course by nature so it is tough to teach. I don't think anyone can do a better job then Mark. You have to work hard though. His tests are fair but not easy.
Just follow his notes exactly. His exams are exactly his notes. Go to class. let him know your name etc. he grades you higher if you just show up and he knows who you are.
He's a really cool guy, interesting, exams are very very similar to his sample exams. Attend class, he doesn't like people who skip then ask questions. Easy marker. Overall I do recommend to have him as a prof!
Really great guy. Mark is helpful and has a lot of enthusiasm for the content he provides. I had him for both Math 125 and 115 and while I enjoyed his linear algebra class more, I would recommend him for either course. Get to know him, don't use your phone in class, show up and you'll automatically be in his good books. Good sense of humor too.
Awesome professor! definately knows his stuff, as long as you attend his classes and dont text your probably fine. Hes a fair marker and will give partial marks but the final is kinda hard but once you get to know him hes got a great sense of humor and will help you. took him for math 125 and 115 and would reccomend him!
Don't use your phone in his class. Knows his stuff, and prepares you for his tests. Show up and work hard and you'll do just fine.
Brilliant prof, but sometimes this makes it hard to understand him. Don't let the first midterm catch you off guard. Make sure you understand the notes he gives in class because that it most of what will be on exams. Fair marker. Difficult course.
This guy is a total brainiac. But this course is QUITE hard. If you want to do well, NEVER use a cellphone, ALWAYS show up for class, and DO ask him questions if you get lost. His midterms are exactly like the samples he gives out, he just changes the numbers. And be prepared to get a tutor, especially after the first month.
I took two courses with Mark, and he is a great professor only if you show up to class and show you care. If he likes you he will gladly help you out, but if your the kind of guy who shows up to the exams only then dont expect much, would totally recommend him
Great teacher but can be confusing at times! Go to math help if you're confused, or go see Mark in his office! He really cares about his students, just show up to class, put your phone away and give him your full attention! Hard course though, if you struggle with Math try taking something else or go to math help every week!
Very impressed, helpful and wanted to make sure you understood what he was teaching. Questions in class are very excepted but he can get a tad confused on what you are trying to ask. However makes sure all is clarified before moving on. If you show up and actually pay attention you will have no problems passing with a good grade. GREAT TEACHER!
Amazing prof , and he's quite hilarious too ! always throwing jokes here and there , and he's very entertaining , I'm definitely taking more math classes with mark ! And his practice exams are very similar to his real one . Cool guy !
He is really helpful if you do not understand something, however his notes are the worst. He mostly relies on examples, and does not explain the actual steps to solve the basic problems. Be prepared to teach yourself in order to complete the homework assignments.
Amazing prof. Go to class ask questions turn off your phone. Genuinely cares about students who put in the effort and will help them out. Tests are like the samples and what he does on the board. Those who try will succeed but there's no mercy for those who don't come to class. The accent isn't that bad. He's fabulous if you get to know him.
Definitely turn off your phone - because you will NEED to. I am NOT a math whiz, but with Mark, I got used to his accent and learned to ask questions. And ask them! Before you get lost! He's not bad looking, just a thick Russian accent and doesn't talk too loud so sit in the front and MAKE LOTS OF NOTES JUST LIKE HIS. Each class is example-based.
Mark is a nice person but a HORRIBLE teacher. His classes consist of him doing examples on the board. He is not clear and gets upset if you ask questions because you don't understand. I think he's aware of these faults because he marks okay on tests but the classes are so rushed and home assignment need to be self-taught. Not worth it.
You better put your phone away and shut up during class. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the work because if you're not very good at math you won't understand his examples. Instead of telling the steps of each problem he relies on examples. He says to ask questions, but he thinks most questions are pointless because we should understand.
His self-written textbook is so convoluted that it doesn't help you at all. He skips quickly through everything and makes it incredibly hard to keep up. God forbid you possess a cell phone, because he will demean you to no end if he sees you even glancing at it. Oh, his Russian accent is insane, too. Trust me. Don't take his section.
He constantly searches for student in the class that are whispering or on their phones and will call them out mercilessly. Late to class every day and always keeps you at least 5 mins after class is scheduled to be over. Memorize the solutions in the textbook to pass the tests. He was just a generally grumpy person, didn't enjoy his class at all.
I hate math, but this was my favorite class. Concepts are explained very well through examples. He scares half the class off in the beginning of the term to make sure you are serious about your studies. Extremely accommodating towards absences due to injury, if you show up on a daily basis he'll do his best to make sure you succeed. NO CELLPHONES!
Mark's class is actually really easy if you show up, read the textbook, and do all your homework assignments. He marks SUPER easy and sometimes gives full marks even when you get a question wrong! :) He does tons of examples and provides practice midterms, both of which are exactly like the actual midterms. Only thing is DO NOT GO ON YOUR PHONE!
good teacher. simple exam and homework. he gives many examples in class, it's really helpful on assignment and exam.
He hates phones so don't use yours in class!! He explains everything in a weird way so if math isn't your best subject, don't take his class. Answers all questions. He will be a nice marker on the first midterm only. Writes his own textbook. Always is 5 minutes late to lectures. He has a good heart though. Would take his class again.
Mark is a great guy, but be prepared to show up to class, and DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE. He hates them, but with his accent, you'll want to pay attention anyway. You get used to the accent though. He's very helpful if you go to talk to him about a test. Don't worry if your class is five buildings over - he's always a few minutes late.
The homework outlines exactly what is going to be on the exams, and if you don't do well on the homework, don't fret! It's just for practice, and he's an easy grader for the exams. Mark is very strict, but as long as you understand the theory, it doesn't matter if you can't do the math portion. Great teacher for a hard class.
He teaches in a way that you think you understand, but you really don't. Once you look at the assignment you realise you have no idea what's going on and he's successfully confused you enough that you don't even know what questions to ask. If you take his class, get ready to teach yourself. The Internet's a better teacher for this class.
Incredibly hard to understand, and this is coming from a trilingual (English-French-Spanish) student sitting in the second row from the front. His accent is thick, he is downright rude when asked for help, he tells his students not to email him unless it is an emergency, and he his writing is nearly illegible. Would not recommend to anybody.
I'm not sure if I have to attend the lectures to pass. They're long and boring (it's a boring subject), but what has helped me most is getting confused in the lecture and then going to the textbook. Pretty tricky accent sometimes, and the writing is really hard, definitely try to sit in the front of the class. He does make funny comments sometimes.
Mark seems unapproachable at first but the guy is hilarious. A strange sense of humor but if you know how to take it some lectures could be quite comical. The way he delivers the material is so clear I really don't know how you cant ace this class. His practice tests are formatted very similar to the midterm as well as the final.
Mark had his moments, sometimes he is funny. However, his teaching methods DID NOT work for me. We spent more time learning the proof of formulas than learning how to apply them. Mark is an easy grader but I find him completely unapproachable. We were not allowed to email him. DO NOT HAVE YOUR CELLPHONE OUT. Also, he arrived late to class daily.
He may seem like an intimidating individual at first, but once you get to know him he's not a bad guy at all. His teaching methods may be hard and frustrating to follow at first but you adjust eventually and easily follow the way he teaches. You may have to make frequent trips to the Math Learning centre, b/c his office hours are short.
He's okay. But if you're not good at math and decide to take this class, you are going to have to put a large amount of effort into this course. He tends to focus on theory then go through examples, but you may end up getting confused before he even gets there. His exams are fairly similar to the practice ones, so i strongly suggest you do them.
Nice at first, dry humor, patient. As time went on, he got rude and angry that we weren't grasping the material that he was teaching almost entirely through proofs and not explaining, calling us all stupid and baselessly accusing people of cheating on homework. Not sure if something was going on behind the scenes, but he acted like a huge jerk.
Mark is hard to reach outside of class and when you do he seems harsh and disappointed. But if you go see him lots, try hard on assignments and pay attention in class, he will notice! Even though I did terrible on the final he bumped my grade a whole letter grade because he knew I worked hard! He's a real sweetheart on the inside!
Not very approachable, can't understand what he is saying and writing is extremely messy to the point it's illegible.
The professors professional abilities are below average. I had to drop the course.
He was way to smart to be teaching the class, because he automatically assumes you know what he's talking about and doesn't elaborate. He's very quiet and unclear. Best to attend every class and sit in the front row.
If you actually like math hes a fantastic professor, hes passionate about math and makes it fun through his indirect sense of humour. If you struggle with math you may be intimidated by him but dont be. He is caring, kind and makes things easy if you put in the extra effort, but dont expect to just sail on through the class.
I found Mark to be rude, no matter when I went into his office hours. Mark offers very confusing notes and wants you to use a mixture of 5 different textbooks to understand his material. He also wants you to buy his own textbook when you will never crack it open. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Things to know about Mark: He seems really intimidating but he's not. He has a serious vibe to him but he's more than willing to help if you need it. Math is hard and he advices you to practice outside of class. Listen to him. Phones are a no. He WILL call you out VERY. GENEROUS. MARKER. If he sees you understand the concept, he won't dock you.
Love the professor as a person. Really good guy, great sense of humor. I think hes just too smart to dumb down the material so he expects a certain amount of knowlege from your end. Tough course, really struggled with it.
Because the material is so heavy he doesnt take time to go over concepts. Be ready to ask for extra help/learn by yourself
He is one of the worst math profs I have ever had at MacEwan. You can barely ever hear him and has the worst handwriting ever. If you dont attend his class youll fail but going to class is just the same. Not a very nice person either. His textbook helps a bit but his homework assignments make no sense. Be ready to drop the class
No idea how I passed this class. Mark has a thick accent and very messy writing, but obviously knows his stuff. Do NOT use your phone in class, as he will rant about cell phones for about 5 minutes if he sees. He uses his own textbook, which I found super helpful (but lots of typos). He's a very easy marker as well.
I was in his office about once a week just to ask questions, he explained things in different ways until I understood. If you don't understand something, his writing or a concept, just ask. He responded to my emails in a timely manner and was always very willing to help.
Mark prepares you extraordinarily, you just need to put in the work. He's been kind and helpful to me every step of the way. A true math person's professor, is dedicated to developing understanding of the topic - not just calculation. A great prof, and an even better person. One of my favorites. PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE, HE HATES PHONES.
Mark has the hardest assignments although it prepares you for the midterms they are extremely challenging and his lectures were almost useless i had to learn everything else where despite paying attention in class. we were also very behind in the course where he had to move every assignment we did delaying it constantly
Mark is nowhere near as bad as people say. He is a very nice guy who truly cares about you if you put in the work. People tried scaring me away from this course but I put in the work and I got a way better grade than I thought. Very helpful after/outside of class. I would honestly recommend him. Put in the effort & you'll do good. Give him a chance
Im taking him currently for Math 120, due to covid everything is online. Unfortunately his classes are so unorganized and difficult to follow. His lectures are up on YouTube, however the audio makes it essentially unhelpful. If you struggle with math I do not recommend him, especially for an online class.
Im taking his class during covid and everything is online. Im fine with online but his lectures are on Youtube where anyone can see them. Not just people that paid for the course. His exams are all multiple choice so even if you make a slight mistake you get the whole question wrong and lose up to 25% of your mark on the test. Would not recommend
I found Mark to be a great professor! He uploads all his lectures to youtube. There are a lot of them, but he is very thorough and goes through lots of examples. I found him to be very flexible, and it was clear he wants his students to succeed. I personally did not attend the zoom lectures and I still did well. You have to study to do well!
A kind hearted man who sincerely cares that the students learn the material, for the sake of the beauty of math. He wrote the textbooks you use, and they are truly amazing. He will reward you if you show you know your stuff, the material is hard, but if you read the book, you will understand and grasp a deep knowledge of the material. Thanks prof.
He posted youtube videos as lectures which were usually longer than they should be. He dances around what he is trying to say sometimes which makes it confusing. He makes you connect the dots yourself. His tests don't have any surprises but you defs have to study lots for them. It was lots of work to figure concepts out. Nice guy, hard class.
Math 241 is one of the hardest class that I have taken as a Math minor. However, if you put enough effort in Math 241, you will get out the effort that you have put in. Thankfully, Mark recognizes the students who are willing to pass and do good in his class. He is a reasonable marker and is very easy to reach out outside of class.
He always got annoyed when you would email him with too many questions and send back rude responses. His accent is very heavy so it was hard to understand him in his recorded lectures and his writing was hard to read. I was only suppose to have him for 3 hours a week and he recorded videos that would take me 6 hours to watch for the week
Incompetent. Couldn't for the life of him figure out how to send us a link to the quizzes for the whole semester. I found his videos to be bad quality and most classes just seemed like he was dealing with technical difficulties. I learned almost no linear algebra and I'm pissed I bought his stupid textbook. Don't ever take this clown's class.
He made no effort to speak clearly through his accent, and this paired with mumbling made it extremely difficult to decipher what he was saying in his pre-recorded lectures. He barely explained what he was doing and expected you to fully read his textbook to get any sort of grip on the course material. He also only marked on quizzes and the final
His lectures are all on youtube, and they are longer than the time you're expected to be in class. I get hours of extra reading/watching when the class is only about 2 hours each week. He also only graded quizzes and finals, you bomb all those and you fail the course. Also has a thick accent, and mumbles a lot so it's hard to understand him.
This class is the hardest I have ever taken at MacEwan however I somehow barely beat a few other of my classes. I made the mistake thinking he would be a good instructor as he created the textbook, but all he gave us was YouTube links to his poor quality lectures. I didn't learn a thing. He is available to accommodate you out of class and is nice
Do NOT take his course. He might be good at the material but he is DEFINITELY NOT good at teaching.
He only gives quizzes and exams so its very hard to get a good mark. He except you to know everything already and he doesnt really help a lot with questions when you email him. He responds to emails quickly!
This is the hardest class ive ever taken however, mark is willing to help if youre willing to put in the work. hes easy to access outside of class in fact he responds to my emails within minutes. he can be harsh but he just wants you to work for it. the last negative review posted on dec 8 is mine but i realized he just wants hard work!
Absolutely hated him as a professor. I love math and I am usually really good at it but Im with him as a professor I failed very badly. He was not very willing to help and often criticized students. If I can help it will not take a class taught by him again
The class consists of 5 term tests and a final exam. The term tests are worth 12% of your grade and consist of 6 questions each term test. This makes it difficult to recover from a bad grade as 1 question is worth 2% of your entire grade. Overall he wants a lot of hard work and elects a lot of outside of class effort. His lectures are mediocre.
You wanna pass? You have to work your butt off. He answers emails, but if you email him wrong he gets very mad. 95% of the time, his answers are "go to the textbook/rewatch lecture/look in your notes." His nature doesn't make you feel comfortable to ask questions. If you're taking this course CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. you NEED the textbook.
In my humble opinion, if we had to name a new 'Godfather of Mathematics' during the present day in age, it would belong solely to Solomonovich. He would come to class so prepared he can literally whip up any geometric proof from thin air, the man has a beautiful mind and has been a great inspiration to myself and many. I hope I can speak to him aga
Overall he was a pretty good teacher, actually, he just doesn't seem like he cares about how his students do, rather he's always concerned about being behind, and that causes students to suffer because he neglects to do examples and expects you to be able to figure everything out on your own. But he'll spend forever going over pointless things.
The man is clearly extremely smart and understands the materiel he teaches like no other, however he is not a very good teacher. You will be married to the textbook and that is how you will learn. Beware if this frightens you.
His class is very lecture-heavy, and you won't pass if you don't read the textbook. I found old online lectures that helped me understand concepts he rushed over in class. He is brilliant and doesn't understand that everyone doesn't have a PhD in math. Overall, if you're willing to put in lots of work outside class, you'll be fine.
i asked him how i can improve in the class and his response was to do better on the final so that shows his lack of caring. we are constantly correcting him on the examples he does in class
He is a brilliant professor, but I feel like his biweekly quizzes are too much. There's barely enough time for us to recover from the last quiz and then bam! were drowned by another quiz. Also there's only 5 quizzes and a final! so it is really hard to pull your grades up if you mess up on two quizzes! Honestly, avoid him as much as possible!
He is an outstanding professor and his knowledge of math is impeccable. His quizzes are extremely similar to the practice ones he posts online and he informs us well on what to expect on his tests. Effort IS REQUIRED in this course to do well, as making mistakes is not an option if you want a good grade. Overall, I am Satisfied with his performance
Very knowledgeable in Math, of course. Knows his stuff, but you are HEAVILY expected to read the textbook. With that being said, the quizzes are very similar to the questions on textbook. Almost like a reward if you do read it as it is required by Mark. He also expects you to be involved or else he will not give effort to help you, which is fair.
At first I thought I wasn't a big fan of professor Solomonovich, but after I failed one of my last quizzes, he came up to me and sat with me after class to explain everything, and even gave me a few extra marks because he could tell I knew what I was doing. He can seem tough, but he cares about his students.
He does rush over some concepts in class. L.A is very abstract so I did have to read the book here and there to help understand but once you get it you get it. Other than that quizzes are the easiest thing and his samples are pretty much identical as the real ones. His has a dry blunt humor which works great on me. Some may find it harsh though.
Didn't explain material very well, rather just did examples on the board and would get upset if anyone asked a question.
I was not a huge fan of Solomonovich. He was very rude if you asked him questions and was not acessible if you wanted to talk to him outside of class. Also lectures were not good.
I tried attending his lectures but I did not understand a thing he was trying to say. Although there is a textbook to refer to, it is very time consuming to read as it is not put in plain language and with the mix of not understanding the instructor and finding him rude many times, I had to drop the course. I would not recommend this professor.
Dr. Solomonovich is a brilliant professor, teaching a challenging course. His lectures are in-depth, his textbook is descriptive, and he is very approachable outside of class. I highly recommend him for 241 if you're up for a challenge, and can put the time in to read for an hour or two a day. The course feels very rewarding.
He's a pretty good teacher, but due to his accent, he can be tricky to understand sometimes. He goes pretty quick, so you need to pay attention. Relies heavily on the textbook so you need to read and do all the exercises. If you do, you will be rewarded because he will formulate his quizzes almost exactly from the book and the samples he posts.
Mark talks extremely quietly, so it was hard to understand him and he didn't explain concepts super well. Marked only on tests, however the quizzes were very similar to the samples. I didn't however like his tone when people would ask questions. found myself really struggling in math for the first time. would not recommend.
His class was super hard as he talks quietly, has a heavy german accent and does not explain the material well. He often teaches material that will be on the test on the last day before the test and sometimes requires you to learn it yourself at home. The textbook was his own and it was the same level of confusion as in class. Do not recommend
I had this professor for math 120 in my first semester of university and I must say it was one of the hardest classes I took not because the actual math was tough but because the professor wasn't a good proff, he has the strongest accent, if you ask him a question he asks you to read the textbook first. I relied on the textbook and the math center.
Pay attention in class and read the textbook. Do the practice quizzes!!!
This proff was extremely difficult, the math wasn't difficult but the proff was. His accent is so strong I could barely understand what he was saying. If you ask a question in class he embarrasses you by saying you haven't looked at the textbook even if you did. The textbook itself is the only thing that got me through this class.
Just do the practice tests and youll be fine
His accent is so strong you'll spend more time just trying to understand what he's saying rather than learning the actual material. By the second class half the class dropped i would not recommend him
Very hard to understand, very quiet, and his work is very hard to read. Moves so quickly.
He has the thickest Russian accent so its very hard to understand him, can't read his writing, talks very quietly, makes fun of people for asking questions in class. had to rewrite my notes because he went to fast and I spent more time trying to understand what he's talking about in the textbook then practicing the actual math.
Professor Solomonovich has a strong accent, making his lectures hard to follow. The textbook is essential, but can be confusing. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice problems and review - definitely recommend using it along with the textbook.
No offence but his accent is so thick that you can barely understand anything he says. His explanations and the way he solves questions are not clear as well. I do not understand how to explain it but he is just not great.
Regardless of what ANYONE says on this platform about Mark they cannot deny he is extremely fair . He is by far the most respectful and kind individual I have had the pleasure to take a university class with during my four years enrolled . Don't let the bad ratings turn you away from taking a class with him . He is brilliant .
heavy accent & soft spoken so sit close to the front. lectures are just him writing out how he solved problems, not really teaching. pay attention to the practice quizzes & memorize them because 80% of the time the quizzes in class are the EXACT same as the practice quizzes, if you're just taking this for a req. & are bad @ math, take this prof.
If you can learn completely out of a textbook and only by examples, take the class. If you need explanations, do not take this class. He is hard to understand, barely does anything except for write down problems and theorems, so you must learn only by the textbook that he wrote and do the practice tests to survive. The course is fine, he isn't.
Lectures go fast because he is late to almost every one of them. This makes his lectures even harder to understand on top of his thick accent and messy writing. I do not feel like I learned anything from him and instead only learned from the textbook even though I went to almost every lecture.
I understand some of the poorer reviews of this prof. But if you actually like Math and are there to learn and not bs your way through, this is the prof for you, as I learned more in this course than I have in any class. Provides you with lots of resources and is very fair.
He is a very smart individual and knows what he is teaching. Unfortunately, this does not always carry over into teaching. He made a lot of notes on the board, mainly consisting of examples and theorems. Get the textbook as it will help you significantly. Practice his online practice quizzes as well if you intend to pass the class.
Did not have a very good time with this class. The course is super hard, but having Mark Solomonovich as the professor made it harder. He was difficult to understand and the notes were messy, making it very hard to follow. The textbook is 100% needed because you definitely cannot learn everything just by going to lectures.
Dr. Solomonovich is a great professor. Although he has a thick accent, overtime I grew to understand what he was saying. To find success in this class is through his practice quizzes and exams as it is very much similar. Sit in the front as he is sometimes hard to hear. Overall he is a very intelligent professor who wants his students to succeed.
The class can be difficult with many of the quizzes only consisting of 6 multiple choice questions. Do as many practice problems in the textbook as you can, and remember the practice quizzes as many questions from them will be on the actual quiz. He can also be intimidating to ask questions, but the lectures were good and very clear.
You have to put in extra work to understand the material as he isn't the best at explaining abstract concepts. However, tests are very predictable. They are pretty much identical to the practice exams, and most of the time the questions on the tests are examples from the lecture. One of the only profs to round up grades if you've been working hard.
Tests weren't too bad because most of the time it's closely related to practice given out. However most of the time learning from him is the hardest part just because he's hard to understand and goes fast. If you do the practice and ask questions you'll do fine.
I liked him but his teaching didn't really work for me, hard to learn but more so course material than him
If you wanna bs your way through the course I highly recommend using the practice tests and exams. If you wanna learn the actual material I would say to choose a new professor. He has a very thick accent and his handwriting is very messy and hard to read. I do not recommend him although his tests were relatively easy
He knows what he is doing and is super smart, but he has a super thick accent, and has sloppy writing. Also his textbook is confusing, since he writes the same way he talks. The tests are easy if you study since they are almost exact copies of the practice tests. Overall, not bad, but the accent is hard to get used to.
He doesn't explain how he reaches answers. He just solves problems on the board, pretty much in his head, and expects us to understand. He is very difficult to follow. He expects you to read the whole textbook and the lectures are very heavy. The textbook doesn't help at all and is very confusing. His final is worth 40% and is extremely difficult.
the lectures are just him reading out the textbook and then doing problems on the board without interacting with the class, not a good experience
He is really smart and he knows what he's teaching, but good luck understanding it
If you take geometry with him and have never taken geometry before, be prepared to get lost. His classes consist of only example problems, and when he teaches, he expects you to know how to do the procedure after like one example. Additionally, when it comes to exams, lecture "notes" and even the textbook can't help. He's smart but can't teach.
If you take geometry with him, be prepared to get lost. In his lectures, he only does example problems, and when it comes to exams, you'll see questions that you weren't prepared for, and when you study for these exams, your notes and even the textbook can't help, because they don't really teach you HOW to do these problems.
Obviously very knowledgeable about the content, he just doesn't communicate it in a way that's easily digestible. Often quite discouraging when questions were asked. Only good thing I can say is that at the end, he might round your grade up slightly if he sees you've made a consistent effort. Passable, but honestly miserable.
He is great but sometimes goes over theorems which I hardly understood. I had a 48% avg and he said if you should improvement in final exam he will boost alot, I failed half quizzed and got a 90% on the final ended with B-. Take him and participate, he will never let u down if u study hard.
