Goofy, but a reasonable teacher. Wastes a lot of time on redundant explanations and tangents; could probably save time by skipping the lectures and reading the material on your own. Tests are straightforward and relatively short, with no surprises.
Crazy guy. Wastes tons of time talking about nothing... but it all is very interesting. Class is straight forward, has WAY too many extra credit opportunities :)
OVERALL GOOD TEACHER KNOWS HIS S**T EVEN THOUGH HE GETS DISTRACTED AND GETS OFF THE SUBJECT. GOOD CLASS, HIGHLY RECOMEND BY THE END U WILL BE ABLE TO TALK TO PPL ABOUT CURRENT ECONOMICS.HIS GRADING METODS ARE ALITTLE WIERD IT IS EASY TO GET AN A IN HIS CLASS IF YOU GO TO CLASS & STUDY.
Amazing teacher! the best i have ever had, makes class fun and the material revelent. He jokes around in class, tells stories and teaches all the material, nothing could be better
A great teacher and overall funny guy. His lectures are hilarious, though not always relevant, he makes it totally worth your time. Make sure to catch the kumquats and watch out for the grapefruits, they're brutal.
He tries to be funny and entertaining but often goes on trivial tangents. His tests are more equations than actual knowledge. His explanations drone on with real life examples but explain less detailedly the more pertinent equation questions. The Average on the first test were F's, and with a 13 point curve only 10% of all students got A's on the t
His tests are tough, so don't expect an A unless you know the material inside and out. He puts really tricky questions on the test. This class bores me to death but at least he gives lots of extra credit. Also hands out money or extra credit (whichever you choose) for volunteering in front of the class.
He is a really fun and quirky guy, his lectures are full of irrelevant but fun anecdotes. The tests are tough but there is a lot of extra credit and he usually curves the test by a lot of points. It's not a bad class, just hard to pay attention to the actual topic.
He is a pretty funny guy so it makes the class go bye faster, but does get off topic a lot and he will admit to it. Tests are somewhat hard but he always ended up adding 10 points or more to them. He does a LOT of extra credit and it is worth it. Make sure to volunteer when he asks because he will add 10 points to your tests.
Great Professor but a little disorganized. He's funny and introduces the material very nicely! He uses class notes rather than a textbook and has old exams you can use to study. Just a little bit of studying and common sense gets you an easy A. The curve usually adds 10+ points to your exam score and there was TONS of extra credit in class.
Goes off on random tangents ALL the time, explains things in very weird ways and makes it really easy for bad students to cheat, but if you're an ethical student you're screwed.
This class is all about playing the game. He gives tests that are unaligned to his teaching. He talks in circles when he teaches and sometimes doesn't get past his first slide. Elementary slides but difficult tests. Uses a lot of random facts from class on tests even though attendance isn't mandatory. Sign up for debate for extra credit.
THIS IS THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER BEEN IN!!! I JUST FINISHED THE FINAL AND WANT TO KILL MYSELF. HIS STUDY PREPARATIONS DO NOT HELP IN ANY WAY. HE IS A WEIRDO AND DOESN'T TEACH ANYTHING. HIS SLIDES ARE SO EASY AND SHORT AND HIS TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD. HIS EC IS NOT WORTH IT, DON'T LET IT REEL YOU IN. GET OUT OF THIS CLASS!!!
Very hard class. I studied my ass off and im stressing if ill get a C or a D. His tests were unrelated to lecture material so i didnt bother going to class. keep up with the online quizzes and make sure u read. his tests are HARD...dont cram for gods sake. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, i wish i did.
Nice teacher, and kind of crazy, but in a good way. Sign up for the debate at the beginning of the year for the extra credit, attend class as much as you can to get extra credit or cash (gives you a choice). Takes most test material from chapter readings, go over all d2l study guides, and try to get ahold of old tests to help you study.
Just to give you an idea about how this class works...I had 103 going into the final and got a B in the class. Go figure! He is socially unaware. The day of the final he said, "I just get to sit here and watch all of your painful and agonizing faces". DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Take SWANSON.
Excellent instructor. He goes off on a tangent once in a while but I think most people will find that endearing. Attending exam review sessions will give you the best chance at passing the course with a good grade.
Good teacher. Goes off on tangents but keeps class interesting. Tests are straightforward, reading and attending review sessions should guarantee a good grade. He gives out extra credit or money to people who volunteer to explain concepts in class.
Very prepared to class and cares about his students. Study the practice questions and go to the review sessions. He gives a ton of extra credit and really makes it difficult to fail the class.
classes are absolutely useless to attend...you do not learn anything
If you are signed up for this class, DROP IT NOW!! Gives out hard tests that dont't line up with the course material, goes on random tangents, and does not curve enough (+10% is not a high enough curve), and how can this guy keep his job when so many people fail his class?
I barely got a B in this class and I am a very good student. His lectures are dull and he constantly goes off on random tangents. I am pretty sure he has a social disorder. He's a nice enough guy but has no idea how to teach. The tests are difficult and much harder than the material he teaches in class. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
Mr. Stegeman made this class much harder than it really was. I feel bad because it seems like he really cares and wants the students to exceed but he is just horrible at teaching. There is a lot of extra credit available I would highly recommend you do because if not it is very easy to get a C or even a D. If possible, try to get another teacher.
Teacher really cares about Economics and is super funny. He is a total goofball but loves to make you laugh and trust me you will. He has so many random jokes that make class entertaining. Also throws money so sit in front row!
Honestly this guy is HILARIOUS! I laughed so hard! and he gives out money. Go to class and listen, you will do fine.
FUN guy and GIVE MONEY! ALWAYS SEAT IN his class in the FIRST ROW even you are not going to take this class. ALWAYS DROP MONEY on the floor. Exams are harder compare to other professors, BUT EXTRA CREDITS up to 50 pts. If you are lazy, just attend the class after the exam because it MUST has extra credit on that day. GOOD LUCK!
He is seriously funny and keeps lecture interesting. He is overall a good lecturer and communicates the information well. Tests are difficult but he drops one and offers enough extra credit to make up for it. Go to class, he gives random extra credit quizzes and occasionally gives out cash!
Stegeman is intellectually on another level - MIT undergraduate - so if you are into economics he won't bore you. He won't spoon feed anything and I think he assumes everyone is Ivy-level-motivated and focused. There isn't any self teaching room, and there's no book or thorough online notes. He is absolutely hilarious.
While some of my peers may find Professors Stegeman funny, I find him agitating. I can not stand that he continuously goes off topic. While he is very intelligent when it comes to economics I am not and I find it hard to learn with him constantly getting off topic and what not.
class is somewhat difficult, and ive been lazy, however he is very very intelligent and is a pretty nice guy. class is entertaining and he does as much as he can for the students
Okay, I can't stand ECON 200... if anything try to find another econ teacher. He is funny and gives money out during the semester but during his lectures he gets off topic a lot even though sometimes they can relate to economics. It is not easy to get a good grade... READ! GET HELP! UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT B4 you take the exams. Exams=Your grade!
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. He has NO idea how to teach. All of the info he teaches in class are irrelevant to the exams. He spends more time handing out money in class than he does doing anything worthwhile. It's nearly impossible to do well. For the love of God, if you want to keep your GPA up, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is the craziest professor I have ever seen!!!!We all came to final this morning, but he announced that all of us don't need to take final and we got automatically 100% on final. He said he can be this crazy once!!!!!!!!!HE IS AN ANGEL!!!!!!!!and so sweet. I don't mean that he is easy going, but he is really sweet and crazy and favorable!!!!!WOAH
FOR GOD SAKE!!!!! He gave all students 100% at Final!!! the way he calculates grades is easy for you guys, drop one mid-term, and other two each weight 25%. lots of extra points, but all your grade is based on tests.20/25 D2L Quizes !!!Finally, GOD BLESS HIM!!!!!!!
Professor Stegeman is the man. Anybody who says it's hard to get a "A" in this class is either lazy or shouldn't be in college. He curves every exam, gives a lot of extra credit, and the tests are relevant if you study. It's not a class you can breeze through, but it's nothing to sweat over. Coolest professor at the U of A.
This class isn't easy necessarily but prof. Stegeman gives a ton of extra credit and curves all the tests and really does do a lot to help his students get a good grade. Go to class though! All the extra credit is through in class quizzes. Also gives away $$ in class and gave everyone 100% on thier final (this semester, not a promise for next)
He's awesome. Makes going to class fun.
This class is pretty easy. You sit there and do nothing for six weeks, than take an exam. Repeat that process two more times and your done with the class. You can teach yourself, but you do have to study for the exam. If you have never taken economics before, this class might not be for you. Hes a fun guy. But you learn next to nothing.
The professor is a funny guy, but the class is challenging. Sure the ECON 200 students from the previous comments said they got A's on their Final exams, but the tests are ridiculous in ECON 150. If you haven't taken ECON before, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Sure the econ 200 students received A's on the final, but this isn't the same class. I DO NOT recommend this class if you haven't taken ECON before.
He rambles on from topic to topic, never actually sticking to a lesson plan. I swear he wakes up with no idea what he is going to talk about and then shows up to class talking about random things. Study guides are useless, read the book to get good grades. He curves the tests a lot too!
Awful. He does not try to help you if you fall behind, and if you want to try and meet with him, forget it. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Bought a textbook that has NO relation to anything he says. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
His class is so boring. I fell asleep everyday because he just rambles on and on. The tests are hard but he curves them.
Stegeman is a really funny, nice guy. He is very enthusiastic about his field and loves to teach. Econ 150 is really easy. Massive curves and lots of extra credit is given. It can be a little boring, but if you attend lecture and take a few notes, you are guaranteed to get an A. No extra assignments, just 3 tests over the semester. A good GEN ED.
Good guy. No homework. Attendance is not mandatory. Curves grades a ton. I got an A but it wasn't easy
This is literally the EASIEST CLASS I have ever taken and I doubt I will ever find an easier one. Stegeman is a funny guy and makes class worth going to. He posts the tests almost question for question a week before the actual test and tells students the answers in a recitation session. I doubt anyone who is challenged in this class will graduate.
Really just not a good gen ed. I wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends. There are three midterms and they are pretty hard. He does curve them, but even with the curve the average grade is never that good. You get to drop your lowest midterm grade too. He is a really good guy though, passionate about the topic but goes off on lots of tangets.
Do not. I took economics in high school and expected to do well in this class. Easy homework but the tests are ridiculously hard. A Econ major from MIT should not be teaching a gen ed level class
Lecture is long and boring. Homeworks are simple but the test is ridiculously hard despite the curve (10-20%) & many still get aroun 60-70%. If you expect to challenge yourself then go for it. If you expect to get a C-D for a gen ed then take him.
Horrible class. This guys really doesn't know how to conduct a university level lecture. He posts homework a few days before the exam and it doesn't resemble anything on it. Very boring lectures. Please do yourself a favor and take another Gen Ed. This is not worth it.
Seriously, don't take this class. What the professor said is so unclear!!!!! He makes this class hard!!
He rants like there's no tommorrow and about relitively useless tangents. Half the time he's lecturing he makes no sense just ridiculous rambles.Tests make me question his sanity because they are never straight answer rather "mark all that apply" and all or nothing. Even with curves, they suck. Oh, and he isn't adapt to technology either.
Don't take this class. His class is so confusing. Not clear at all.
Class is impossible to receive a good grade in
The class is overall extremely easy. As long as you go to class once in a while and go to all the pre- and post-exam reviews you will do well. Exams are curved 10-20% and he gives a lot of extra credit. Homework assignments have no time limit and unlimited submissions on D2L and are merely online reviews for the tests. Lectures are sometimes boring
This is the worst class I've ever taken. He is the worst professor I've ever had. He rambles on about topics that aren't on the homework or exams, his homework is completely irrelevant, and he is extremely boring. I usually like something about every professor I have but there is absolutely NOTHING I like about him. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This was a pointless class to take. As far as Gen eds go, you are better off taking just about anything else. Not only does he not explain the course material, he elaborately goes into unrelated tangents. The only good part about this class is that on rare occasion he throws out twenty dollar bill so if you sit in the front row, you may get one.
Professor Stegeman's class is really focused on the concepts of basic economics. If you understand them then the class is easy from then on. He doesn't test on the readings, there are only 4-5 online homework for the entire class, and 2-3 additional written homework, the rest is based on exams with huge curves.
Very confusing lectures that have nothing to do with the subject/power point. Rambles about meaningless tangents. Doesn't know how to use technology i.e. D2L... Topics do not cover "basic economics" and the exams are practically in code. Good news, he curves exams as high as his department will allow him... That however does not mean you get an A..
Mr. Stegeman offers an informative class and if you have any interest in economics you will at least somewhat enjoy it. The only downside to Mr. Stegeman's course is that you must show up to lectures (and they can be boring at times)to get a good grade. If you show up to class this class shouldn't be difficult for you.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. You are better off taking econ 200 as a gen ed, you will get a better grade I promise. He has about 4 power point slides a class and only gets through 2 of them in an hour and 15 minute period because he is rambling about absolutely nothing. This class is impossible to do well in. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS
He got his doctorate from MIT and teaches his class like he's still there. The class was already notoriously hard, Stegeman replaced the old teacher and managed to make it even more complex than it used to be. The readings only cover like 30% of his tests, and his lectures are hardly posted online but barely make sense in person. Impossible.
This guy cannot teach to save his life, and his homework assignments will make you want to pull your hair out because they make absolutely no sense.
Stegeman is absolutely hilarious, but too bad that doesn't translate to a good teacher. His lectures are pretty confusing, but where all of the material comes from and he teaches like he is back in a doctorate level class at MIT where he went to school. He is a great guy, and got better teaching towards the end of the semester.
Lectures: Rambles too much and goes off on a tagent in class all the time. He taught you concepts but never showed you how to apply them which made the homework very hard. Homework: The problems from the textbook were manageable, but if he created a problem it was near to impossible to do on your own. Exams: Based off of homework problems.
most unorganized class I have ever taken at the UofA. Would like to give advice for future students, however everything was so unstable I doubt it'll be the same. Professor makes assumptions that students already know tougher material. Only advantage is the huge curves given on exams. Unfortunately unavoidable prof if you're an econ major
DO NOT take this course with this professor, his lectures make you want to pull your hair out and his tests are ridiculously hard. You will not get the grade you want in this course.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst class I have ever taken. Although there are only 4 exams and 3 home works, he makes them extremely hard and confusing so its impossible to get a good grade.
This class was absolutely terrible. The lectures barely match the weekly homework that each take 3-4 hours to complete, the book is completely useless and the only valuable resource when you have questions are the TA's. Not ot mention the lectures are absolutely useless. If I could go back I would do ANYTHING in my power to avoid this class.
By far the worst "teacher" I have had. The lectures have nothing to do with what is on the home, the homework has nothing to do with what is on the exam, and the textbook is completely useless. When he lectures, there is a complete disconnect. This really should be a simple class, yet he complicates everything. Hes rude during office hours as well.
Here is an honest review. Dr. Stegeman is a very smart guy. I can see why people want to fall asleep during lecture but it is a FAIR class. The class has tons of extra credit and the tests very strongly correlate with homework. The tests are just sort of long for me but he curves each one a bunch. Just pray you don't get the angry redheaded TA.
Easy tests. Huge amount of extra credit. Big curves. Terrible teacher, though. Only teaches about 15% of the HW. Very inefficient with class time. Teaches concepts in class, but not nearly enough math. Very unorganized. I got an A easily but this guy definitely should not be a teacher. Sad to say because he's a very smart and nice guy, though.
The lectures are hard to follow. I recommend reading the book if you struggle with the concepts. Going to the review sessions hosted by the TAs-not the preceptors- is almost required if you want to understand. Work hard on the hw. That is what brought down my grade. The tests are not as hard as the hw. Lots of extra credit offered during lectures.
I don't know why this professor has so much bad feedback. I think he is so polite and patient, some lectures are funny. However, some hws are hard. If you follow the hws and practice questions, the grade won't let you down.
Awfully boring and uninformative lectures. Wonders off topic for more than half the class and does not get through all the required topics. Only 2 exams and takes him months to grade them. Tests are unnecessarily difficult and he does not explain them enough in lecture. Do not take his class if you want a good grade. You will not learn anything.
This was Dr. Stegeman's first time teaching this class because the previous professor left. He did a stand up job, and received a lot of undeserved heat. He is a bit slow to return grades, but he is funny, and the material is always relevant to the real world. This professor is brilliant, and the class is not too difficult.
I feel bad, because he really is a nice person.... but honestly one of the worst structured classes I've ever taken. No textbook, so you gave to rely off his slides in class for info which isn't usually helpful because he goes on tangents that often last the whole class. Re-schedules office hours, but does curve tests a lot.
professor does not grade, does not assign reading (not textbook) does not cover content on the test, does not post grades. Exams are nothing like the irrelevant lectures we are exposed to. We were told he will not finish the semester and we were assigned another professor, we have no clue what are grades are.
BNAD 301. By far the worst teacher I have every had. I study for days before his tests and when the test comes, he has random questions on the test of material he goes over once during his lectures but aren't even on the slides. Class average for the first test was a 65 and he wonders why everyone does badly.
This professor is lazy. He does not give any supplemental material to help you understand the concepts from the lectures because he doesn't want to grade it. The questions on his tests are arbitrary and can be interpreted in many ways, but if you don't answer the one he wants you won't get any credit. Definitely would not take this class with him.
The worst professor I have ever had at the UA, hands down. He babbles and goes on ridiculously long tangents in class, and the lectures couldn't be more boring. To make matters worse, you will never take a harder test in your life. The entire class fails and he curves every exam. Also, the female TA is a nightmare. So miserable.
Do not take this class. I did not learn a single thing and I took written notes semester. Just rants about stuff that has nothing to do with the slides. I could go on and on about how terrible this class is, but just don't take it.
This prof was the worst teacher I've ever had. He didn't teach anything relevant to economics in his lectures, but went on tangents about politics and astrology. He graded us on clicker quizzes and 3 exams (including the midterm and the final) and when he did grade them after a month, the grading system was incomprehensible. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
This is the worst professor at U of A. Do not even attempt to take this class, seriously. His whole class is based on exam scores, so if you bomb one exam you are screwed. He provides no study guides, office hours, or practice help. He does not respond to emails and I seriously do not understand how he is a paid professor at the U of A. DONTTAKE0/5
I am not exaggerating when I say this but Stegeman was absolutely the worst professor I have ever had at the University of Arizona, and this is coming from a senior. There is no better way to put it. His lectures were difficult to follow and the overall class structure was unorganized. Not recommended.
Professor Stegeman made this semester a total headache for me and many others. I am an Econ major and thought I would do fine in this course. However, he fails to give proper instructions and makes the exams way more difficult than they need to be. BNAD classes should be straightforward and his class is a total pain due to his unorganization.
My experience was during COVID. He only grades exams and quizzes- no other supplementary materials or assignments. No textbook or readings to study for the heavily graded exams. It is impossible to contact him outside of class but if you try and ask him something during class, he will tangent and cut into heavily graded quiz time. Messy D2L page.
Do not take this class, he is the most disorganized and convoluted professor I have ever had. He rambles on and on during his lectures about topics that barely pertain to the PowerPoint slides. He spends 45 mins on one PowerPoint slide because of how often he sidetracks. Has canceled class 10 mins before class multiple times or runs 30 mins late.
Your grade is solely based on test scores and you will not at all be prepared for those tests based on his lectures. There is no textbook, which would have been nice to have because he can't teach. He goes off on tangents and focuses on nothing specific but the tests are extremely specific and not at all easy. This class dragged my GPA down.
Before I took this class I was worried when I saw his reviews, but figured I could work hard and get an A. Believe me when I saw that is close to impossible. This professors exams are worded so weirdly, and on top of that he asks the most random questions. He asks more questions about what he rambled about in class rather than what's on the slides.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR AT U OF A. Let me write this review as though its one of his exam questions: This professor, for the academic school year of 2021-2022, for the sake of this review, professor Stegeman, was a terrible professor, in terms of teaching and lectures... HIS EXAM QUESTIONS ARE JUST SO COMPLICATED AND LONG FOR NO REASON.
These ratings are no exaggeration. This Professor is terrible. I wouldnt have minored in business admin if I knew I was going to have to take this class. He is the only professor that teaches it, and has the most disorganized structure of all time. He teaches us nothing, and goes 20 points above the max curve so that his average wont be an F.
seriously the worst professor I've had. Consistently late to class, condescending, disrespectful of time for both students and TA's. Take another class for BNAD minor if you can!
Want to get an A? Right down/print the slides before class, then jot down his add-ons throughout the lecture. Ask for clarification. He holds exam review sessions outside of class, go to them and he is very willing to answer questions. Finally, the exam questions about what he randomly mentioned in class are EXTRA CREDIT not main exam questions.
This guy is really funny, I enjoy him as a person and think he is a genius. That being said, his tests are extremely hard if you don't have a background in finance and Econ. Luckily, he gives a TON of extra credit, so if you go to class and do the extra assignments you will be fine! He is a cool and interesting person who is worth getting to know.
Brilliant lectures, makes the material interesting with real world applications, funny guy, and gives lots of EC opportunities. Tests aren't bad if you attend class and review the HW, and they're also curved a lot. Honestly don't get the negative reviews. Definitely the best class I've taken for the BNAD minor.
The class could be easy but he makes it way more complicated. The exams take up 80% of your grade and there is not much material to use to get ready and his slides are next to useless. Wastes time in class with unimportant ramblings and sidetracking. When you ask questions in class, he mocks you and doesn't even answer the question properly.
Okay, I want to address the "I don't know why he gets negative reviews", y'all... I literally created this account to tell you about how his tests are literally the hw, like 5% slides and the rest is him reusing stuff. I agree he's nice, but a HORRIBLE professor. Like everyone else, I was like oh I can do it still, the answer is no, you cannot:)
He plays mind games with your grade, says seats are not required but will not allow you to gain participation points if you dont pick a seat, lied about saying they are required & then changed syllabus to say they are Spent first class of semester talking about astrology Going deaf I believe and cant hear a word people say
This professor is super boring in lectures. There was not a lot of engagement. As long as you do the work you should be fine, but the grade is test heavy.
This guy is defiantly scatterbrained so its best to catch him in person. Has a lot of good advice on career stuff and smart. Would recommend for a small class. Attend the lectures because he does take some time to post lecture slides but attendance isn't mandatory. Exams are easy.
this could've been an easy class but he makes everything more difficult than it has to be. unorganized, always late, goes off on tangents, AND for our final exam, he delayed it 30 minutes right before it was supposed to start and showed up late so we didn't start until an hour later than we were supposed to. i have no idea how he still has a job.
No sympathy for rounding final grades. Poor lectures with math errors, including parentheses. Offers little flexibility after a family member's passing and no chance to make up exams. Exams are very hard, no partial credit, and 80% of the grade. Takes attendance with random graded questions and doesn't seem sincere in anything he does.
The lectures can be hit or miss, but engage with the material and use Unstuck AI for exam prep - it really helps. Tests are tough, but extra credit opportunities make it manageable if you stay on top of things.
Stegeman is a character. He's a good lecturer. He often goes off-topic but instills useful knowledge regardless. The class is pretty easy, just mainly graded on an essay and a midterm, and if you do the practice questions, it's an easy A. He reminds me a lot of Stewart Copeland; he's an amusing person.
I had an A for most of the semester until the last exam before the final. Exams are 85% of your grade. Homework takes 45 min- 1h. Multiple times the information on his slides was contradictory and he gave me credit for correcting him. You can tell the TA's do most of the work so when it comes to exam reviews he has no idea what's going on.
