Greatt teacher. He is extremely fun and hilarious. He loves philosophy and has broad understanding of the entire breadth of philosophy around the world. Lectures are extrememly enjoyable, just keep up on the reading and its easy to get good grades.
Exciting, really into the subjects. Admits he is fallable and also explains things very well. A lot of reading is required but in my experience not neccessary. Tests are vocab based and curved.
Don't take this teacher if you aren't very good on tests. They are all straight from the book and the books are very hard to understand. I received an F in this class purely for the fact that he doesn't really help you. Isn't very informative so if you have questions, you better know someone.
If you don't have a mind for philosophy, keep away. Otherwise, a great teacher to take. Cracks jokes, amusing anecdotes, so on. Took 225 cause I liked 120.
One of my favorite profs from BCC. This class could have been hell, but he had a great attitude and made the material really interesting. Material is not easy by any means, but show up and take notes and you shoul do well on the exams.
Overall a good teacher. I object to the other postings that he is not helpful. He cetainly won't make things easy if you haven't read the material. I met with him 4 times one week to make sure I had things down and he was nothing but helpful!
Awesome teacher, very knowledgeable of his subject but whoever said he's not going to make it easy if you don't read was right. he is an excellent explainer, very clear, very funny and geeky in a good way. Made me intersted in philosophy, which is pretty hard to do.
He was funny and very knowledgable. I enjoyed his class, although I didn't like the tets. But read & attend & use your brain, and you will be fine.
Mark's classes are hard, but he is more than willing to help, he is an awesome teacher, and he is funny. He likes to make you think in new ways and he'll challenge your thought processes to see if you know why you think the way you do.
This is a good class to take. He does a great job of explaining everything and he's a totally cool teacher. He makes the class a fun experience. Great use of examples and the way he grades is really easy and it's just a class you want to show up for.
the examples he gives in class were not very helpful and the definitions of the terms he gives arent very helpful. by far the worst professor i've had.
I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this course. Storey explains the material well. This class may not be for those who don't test well. Don't miss class. Do the assignments even though they aren't required so you can ask questions. If you practice the material, the tests are'nt that hard. TAKE NOTES. Storey himself is a comedy show.
Very clear teacher! great examples! makes the class fun! uses in-class work, 3 essays and tests to help you learn. such a fun class he makes it very amuzing and if you don't miss class and listen to lectures it won't be very hard!
You must have a good sense of humor for this teacher...he likes to tell jokes, but they are not always funny...or are inappropriate. I only took this class because I needed to....I personally have not learned very much about "Critical Reasoning"....however, I did learn a few things about ancient Greeks.
Tries to put the students at ease. Approachable.
One the best professors at BCC. Storey takes a subject that is very difficult and some how makes it somewhat easy to understand. Go to class, buy the book, use the CD and you'll do fine. Also, take advantage of his office hours if you have questions. He's always willing to help.
I love this guy. He is very funny, but also gives good explanations. My one negative comment is sometimes, he would come to class unprepared and would have to quickly look up what to do in the textbook.

He was ok. Attendance is pretty important but a few skipped days won't kill your grade. Not always that helpful but if you're in class he's pretty clear and organized.
Mark Storey is a great teacher who knows what he is talking about. He won't give you a free "A" but if you show up for class and pay attention to what he is saying, you can definitely do well in this class. He also makes the material fun and relevant.
Great Teacher, he explains everything in a progressive logical way that you can understand. This class though, if you miss a day you better keep up in the book or you'll get left behind.
Worst professor I've ever had!! Goes on useless tangents, all he does is lecture and is NOT helpful when needed. Grades based on 3 tests and 2 papers. Tests are very difficult and confusing. Also, paper directions were confusing. Overall his assignments don't make sense and 1/2 the time in class is a waste.
Great, funny teacher that got me interested in Philosophy. Explains everything step-by-step and the class is a breeze (and semi-entertaining) as long as you show up.
Take this class if:1. You have been rendered comatose by a creature of pure lecture and want change 2. Want to commit suicide but want to die from laughing. 3. Not get suckled into a cult's insane reasoning but don't want to go through a gruesome and boring process in doing it.
If you have pre-knowledge about logic, taking this class would be fun! otherwise, it will confuse you a lot. If you need a good grade, you need to study hard. His grading policy is somewhat unfair.
SUCH A HARD CLASS! He's nice and helpful but your WHOLE grade is based on 3 tests--nothing else! You can't make them up or retake them if you miss that day. I did poorly but that's why i'm an ENG major. If you need to, take it... Otherwise stay away from Logic.
Very hard class. Extremely confusing and I ended up dropping because I didn't understand anything.
This is my 2nd class with him because he is funny and down to earth. Very nice, head of the department, very smart, can teach quite well. Is willing to help all students and after hours. I recommend him for any phil. class.
Storey for any of his classes demands that you been in class almost every day. If you miss something, hopefully you have made some friends that can explain concepts to you or let you copy their notes. He grades solely based on tests, and maybe a couple papers. He is pretty entertaining to listen to, so lectures aren't really ever boring.
Storey is a pretty cool dude. He is down to earth and quarky. But that's good because it makes it easier to pay attention to what he is saying. The classes he teaches aren't walk in the parks, but if you pay attention you should do well on the tests. Don't let the study guides throw you off, he usually makes the actual tests a bit easier/clearer.
His class doesn't make a lot of sense. He goes very fast, and makes you feel stupid during office hours. In this subject, not only would homework be EXTREMELY helpful, grades based partially on effort would make a huge difference. I am giving 200%, have a private tutor and my goal is a C. He's a nice guy, but avoid this particular class if you can.
Logic sucks. The end. Hahah but he's actually great at teaching it, it's difficult and though atttendence isn't required, you really have to go to keep up. I don't really see why people complain when they have to come to class... It's school. But yeah he's cool and personable which helps in such dry material.
All of his classes will not be a breeze. He wants you to learn and flex your brain to develop specific ways of thinking about the problems. I've had him many times for other classes. You will learn and have fun. I recommend him because he knows a lot, helps out, and makes jokes. He's real and natural. Just don't expect a free pass.
The bad reviews are from ppl. who wanted an easy garde and expected a laid-back class where you discuss God and puppies. Sorry, you don't get that but from his logic, reasoning, and social classes, you will learn skills and master them forever. He's funny too.
I don't understand the bad reviews on Storey to be honest. It's probably because those people did not attend class, and then missed something that would have otherwise been easy to understand if they had attended that day. Nothing in his classes are particularly hard, you just need to be there, and then study a bit after class and you'll be fine.
Mark Storey's logic class was not that hard. I think I did... about 0 hours of at home work and I still passed the class with an A. The ONLY thing that was graded were the 4 tests we had, which were relatively easy. Not to mention, he was really funny and I highly enjoyed his sense of humor. Basically to pass his class, just show up and listen.
Awesome instructor. If this course was run by anyone else the material would have been boring and difficult to learn.
He's fantastic. Very helpful, wonderfully dry sense of humor, punctual, prepared. I'm an art major- had zero interest in logic, but halfway through now and find it fun and engaging. Just show up every day and pay attention - you'll have fun :D
LOVE him! I've taken 3 classes from him and enjoyed them all even though Intro to Logic was super hard. Critical Reasoning and Social Phil are both great, as long as you show up and pay attention you'll get an A. SUper funny and always willing to help. I would recomend Phil 115 to anyone, it's way easy and fun.
The best teacher I've had in college thus far. He's extremely willing to help with any questions and also to accommodate to those not able to make it on test days. For those interested i will also say that in Phil 106 (intro to logic) there is no homework at all, it is 100 test based though the only way to get an F is to get a 0 on every test.
No idea how this prof rates so high, VERY hard class. Teacher is not helpful. takes massive points off tests if you have any spelling errors ect. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!
I had such a bad experience with this teacher. He is not helpful at all, very self oriented, made stupid jokes and called us morons. He is not a helpful teacher and very lazy, will not do any extra work to help you , if you dont understand the material he will say:" Sorry, Logic is Hard." The atmosphere in the class reflects his attitude.
I thought he was a great teacher and made things more fun and enjoyable. He made it so that I didn't want to miss a class. There was no homework to turn in just studying for test and four take-home assignments which were always due the day of the test. The only trouble I had was knowing what exactly I needed to study.
Great teacher, completely subjective and very willing to help. The class is difficult if you don't do the reading or are expecting a free ride, but if you actually study and come to class it's really graded pretty easy.
Great prof, taken all three of his courses now and am tutoring 2 of them. Sparked my interest in phil by making everything so clear while teaching. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF you don't plan on going to class, are not intelligent enough to keep up, or want a grade based on effort and not knowledge of the subject.
Great teacher! I did not get an A in this class, but if I studied harder I would have. Make sure you go to class, or else you will miss important info and his lectures clarify the material. His lectures were funny, clear, and interesting. Willing to help if you ask for it. Study hard and you will do great! Take his class!
Amusing instructor. Clear, with knowledge of subject and eager to share that knowledge.
I think Mark does an okay e job considering the subject matter can get endlessly confusing. The tests were damn hard, you'll have to put in a lot if you want to do well.
Incredibly enthusiastic. Loves teaching and logic. Class was on the hard side, but he worked to make things clear. Attending class is highly suggested--he does enough practice problems that concepts are digestible by the tests. Has tended to favor one side of room (physical room, not class) b/c of writing on the board. Might want to watch for that.
This teacher was SUPER nice and helpful but your grade is based off of only four tests! Personally, I am a horrible test taker and if you even miss one day and don't get the notes from someone you can easily be lost.
Mark has a good sense of humor & knows the subject well. If you want a CHANCE at passing be there every day. Your whole grade is based on the tests and nothing else. If you don't understand the way he explains something your not gonna get a different explanation. Challenging class but much better than taking lots of math classes.
Great instructor. Show up to class, take notes & practice 1-2 hours a week + 2-3 hours the night before a test and you can get an A. The entire grade is made up of 3 tests, which means no homework! This is a great elective or substitute for math class. Also, no textbook all the materials are posted online (reading + practice).
Mark is great! He explains the materials very well. There is no mandatory attendance, but it will be hard if you miss a class. No homework. Just come to class and take notes, you will do fine!
Storey is honestly a really good teacher. He breaks down all the material in class and takes it slow to make sure everyone gets it. He's also really nice. The only problem I could see people having would be if you can't make it to every class - you'll really be confused in the following lectures. Try to make it, because he's really good!
The format was simple: got to class, and take notes. There was never any homework, and he made the text book available online for free. I didn't need it though, since he always made everything so clear in class. Great professor, and he's also got some funny stories.
When I ask him questions, he gives off the impression that he thinks I'm stupid for not fully understanding certain concepts. He assumes that every student automatically comprehends everything he talks about. He expects what makes sense to him makes sense to everyone. Logic is a tough class, even if you do show up and practice.
He was a good guy who explained everything well. But if you miss a class, things would get confusing quickly. Even though I never missed a class, I saw him helping students who did catch up on the lessons. His assignments are also extremely easy as are his quizzes and he never gave out homework.
He was clear that our grades would be determined solely be test and essays, meaning that there would be little to cushion our grades. Over all he was a good guy, but I would have liked more in class practice.
Phil of Buddhism was fun, but I do have some complaints. 1) we spent one week on something that was neither on the syllabus nor about Buddhism. 2) 30 mins of class teaching us English punctuation and 3)says that unicorn do not exist :(
Also he gives a lot of extra credits opportunities! weekly short film reviews and 2 essays of your choice (about Buddhism of course)
He was definitely the best teacher I've had at BC. He was awesome and i absolutely LOVED his class. I was really worried about his class at first, but with hard work and daily attendance a good grade is absolutely possible. I 100% recommend philosophy of logic with him! :)
Mark is an awesome teacher and is really funny. If you have to take a Philosphy class take his. He spends tons of time on practice problems during class which is really helpful. If you go to class and do some studying youll get a good grade.
Good person/not so good instructor. The only thing that made up your grade was 3 exams and if you did horribly on the first 2, then the quarter became stressful...would not recommend
GREAT teacher. Very funny, helpful, I NEVER got bored in his Symbolic Logic class, and I get bored easily. Your grade is based on 3 tests. There's not much need to study, although it's a good idea to before a test. Mark doesn't take attendance, but it's important to show up every day or you might miss new material that's hard to learn by yourself.
I took his critical thinking class. You must study. It's easy, the concepts are easy, but you only take 4 tests and write 2 essays so each tests count. It's easy to get an A just by studying the terms and the textbook, as well as going to every lecture. But if you slack off, you'll slide with a C+/B-. It takes work to get the 4.0.
strange guy. I was stoked to take this class, but came to find that it's almost not even a philosophy class at all. Its as if he assumes his class is full of accomplished philosophy majors who already have a full understanding of topics. The tests are WAY harder than any problems given in class. 3 tests thats IT. If you mess one up. game over. RUN.
Best teacher Easy workload, just a decent amount of reading, and a few tests.Individual liberty is class focus. Weekly assignments due Monday and accepts it until Friday, docking points based on when you turn in. You won't see a question on a test which he has not talked about in class. VERY interesting class, even if not interested in philosophy.
Come to class regularly. It isn't hard, just takes your effort so come to class everyday. Mark is a character, but overall a good guy. This class is not a walk in the park and is somewhat unconventional learning but will all make sense in the end. Textbook is online and optional to your learning experience.
An easy class with easy tests, as long as you do the reading (which isn't much). His lectures are boring and the occasional in-class assignments are usually confusing. There's a weekly one-page paper and three tests (no final!), with an optional essay at the end of the term.
DO NOT TAKE SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY WITH THIS PROFESSOR! It was quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken. I signed up for this class with genuine interest in learning more about the philosophy discipline, but was shocked by how uncompassionate he was towards students needs and his frequent flat out rudeness. He will drop if you don't attend.
This class was infuriating. 3 exams are all you get to display your understanding of the class and they are no walk in the park. Showing up to every class is not going to result in a good grade or even a pass. Tutors are necessary, he doesn't clarify solutions and he assumes you know everything already. Crying in class was common for students.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASSPROFESSOR! I was required to take this class and if it weren't for the fact getting my diploma relied on me passing this class I would have dropped it immediately. I showed up EVERY CLASS (he says you'll fail if you don't) and did all practice problems and STILL didn't understand, and he was NO help when asking for clarity.
Don't know why everyone on this site hates on Mr. Storey. This teacher is awesome. I was nervous going into his class after reading all of the terrible reviews on this site, but ended up really enjoying it. He is hilarious, as well as very smart and knowledgeable in the subject. Only complaint I have is he frequently gets off topic while lecturing.
Pretty good professor, sometimes goes off on tangents but generally interesting. Will give help if you ask for it. Very accommodating to students with disabilities. Reading is very important, tests are easy, and there are one to two homework assignments per week, usually pretty easy. Overall, I really enjoyed taking his class.
Mark was a wonderful prof. His textbook is really informational and the practice problems help ALOT! Although your grade is based on 3 tests only, this class isn't so bad if you know what you are doing and you do the practice problems regularly. If you are lucky, you might even find a mistake in the textbook and you can get extra credit!
Loved this class with Mark! He is very funny, goofy and high energy. The material may be boring to some people, but I found it relaxing. Go to class! You will not understand how to solve the problems if you only read the text. Mark writes his own text and has TONS of practice problems! Look out for typos for extra credit opps. No hw, only 3 tests.
Just took my final on Confucianism and 25/35 of the points you could earned were based on your knowledge of Chinese vocabulary, which i think is unfair. The tests did not challenge our application of the concepts and ideologies. The tests were almost only on comprehension. Would not recommend since there are so many (4) difficult tests.
Took his Phil 101 class. He's funny & long explanations. Doesn't require much reading/writing (1 paper per week/chpt) for his 2x class/week. Tough grader on the papers and tests (3 all qtr), but does offer weekly ec, & an ec test to replace your worst test grade. The tests were alright; mostly multiple choice & minimal writing to explain concepts.
Philosophy trains you to think critically. If you don't have the intellectual chops to hack it, then don't take these classes. You won't get an easy A for being a warm body in class. You've got to earn it. Mark Storey is a great professor. He's funny, he explains things well, and he honors your intellectual capacity by setting high expectations.
the class is whack.I didnt sign up for him, i signed up for a different prof. He is quirky which i dont mind but is no help for clarity. Everything is extremely confusing and when he explains he just goes off into his own ways of understanding. 3 tests and thats all you got to pass the class, Fail one and its OVER. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
I totally agree with this person^ sorry but the class is WHACK! He is so confusing and I CANNOT READ HIS HANDWRITING ON THE WHITEBOARD! 3 tests and that's it. He's funny I'll give you that, but I'm not here to laugh... I'm here to learn... I seem ignorant for this, but I am not here to waste money on classes and not learn anything. DONT RECOMMEND
Professor Storey is a funny professor. As long as you don't talk in class unless you are participating in the lecture, he will be fine with you. He gives the text online so you don't have to buy a book. He gives weekly (one page) assignments & 4 tests. They are all very easy if you listen. He is a good choice for a Phil professor!
Favorite teacher at BC. Hilarious guy. If you don't come to class everyday and pay attention you won't pass, because 120 is more like a math class than phil. If you do the work it's fun, rewarding and pretty easy. Almost half my class was weeded out because they didn't do well on the first two exams (3 total and that's it) so commit from the start.
Mark is a funny guy. He keeps class entertaining with funny antidotes. He loves what he teaches which makes it easy. The only grades come from the 3 tests. No homework, no attendance grade, no papers. Even though you don't need to show up, I recommend you do as he will make your day.
A majority of the information that is tested on are in the lectures. You can't skip class and do well on the tests. You'll learn a lot but its not an easy class.
If you go to class and put the work in then this class isn't too hard. If you skip class and don't study then this will be very tough. He is very knowledgeable about philosophy and wants us to do well.
Mark Storey is a very underrated professor. I signed up for his class at the last second and I'm glad I did. His lectures are amazing and very memorable. He is also very funny. There are lots of extra credit assignments as well. There are also weekly assignments but they take no more than an hour to finish. His class isn't easy though.
Three exams, cover pretty in depth material in the texts. Funny man in lectures, a little more material reviewing would be nice for such a complex subject like Philosophy. Offers a lot of Extra Credit. Overall, a nice professor, fair. Grading system very unique. Must work for your A, can't just turn up and except a good grade.
The funniest professor I think I have ever had. The material is very well laid out by the professor and in his book with plenty of practice opportunity. Your entire grade consists of 3 midterms and occasionally an in class extra credit opportunity. Very fun and fascinating class. I hope to take another class with Storey soon.
Really enjoyed the class overall. He grades papers fairly lightly if you put in the work, but the quizzes are a hit or miss. The class may be hard to get into unless you truly enjoy the subject at hand. Participating in class goes a long way, reading the material before class will get you far. Take the class if interested in philosophy
I'll say that he really knows his stuff. There's a lot of lecturing which can lend itself to people drifting off, but at least for me, Storey explained most things in a way that was clear, concise, and easy to understand.
Hes probably one of the best teachers Ive ever had. But if youre not super interested in philosophy, his lectures seem draining and boring. Theres a quiz and assignment every week. Also a lot of extra credit that will really save your grade. Overall a great guy, only downside is he doesnt use canvas so you cant really tell your grade.
Mark is a good guy and teaches well, but unless you are a philosophy major and the class is required you should stay away from symbolic logic. It isn't necessarily hard, but requires learning a whole new style of thinking that isn't terribly applicable outside of philosophy.
I took Mark's Intro to Logic course on a lark twenty years ago (Fall, 1997) and I can honesty say it was one of the two or three best and most useful courses I've ever taken. If you come to learn and if you go beyond the minimum and work every exercise he throws your way, you will learn an approach to logic that will enrich your life.
Professor Storey is very knowledgeable about philosophy and compiles some very interesting texts on the subject for us to read. His grading is very clear and there are no confusions. He allows for opportunities to make up for poor quiz grades. The material should interest you before taking this class, or else the reading will be boring! Take him.
Mark Storey has to be one of my favorite professors I've had. He's funny, he's a very down-to-earth kind of professor, and I highly recommend him. Multiple times in lectures (even ones on paper) I was laughing out loud at jokes about philosophy. He's very nice, very approachable, but just be ready to critically read some papers.
Mr. Storey is hilarious. I took his asych online intro to phil class and it was well organized. He assigned crash course videos every week and his weekly written lecture was fun to read. He doesn't provide feedback but I'm sure if you asked he would. His quizzes and tests are very straight forward. The only work learning, weekly quizzes, and tests.
Had Prof. Storey from Symbolic Logic at Bellevue College, and man was he amazing! I struggled with this course at first, but that's because I didn't read the textbook well enough and did the practice problems. You won't get the grade you want if you don't read the given textbook, so make sure to read! Good luck everyone.
I took Storey's asynchronous course. No video lectures, just a lot of readings. Each week has a module with an introduction (2-24 pgs), questions to guide notes, readings, videos, and a 20 mcq quiz. Three short (two pages) reflection papers that he grades softly. No late work, but he offers a quiz at the end of the quarter to swap the lowest score.
i took his class completely asynch! red flag is that he wrote his own text book. otherwise, chapters are generally short, weekly quizzes that addressed the content very well (no off-the-gird questions or whtevr), and four response papers that were no more than a page long. canvas is straight forward. seems like a pretty averagely good prof, to me.
Prof. Storey is passionate about philosophy and his enthusiasm made me more interested in the content than I otherwise would have been. There was a fair amount of hw (mostly reading) but he did a good job covering as much as he could in class. You're graded on weekly quizzes and 3 single-page response papers.
Very straight forward when it comes to assignments. There are quizzes every week along with a few papers. Structured and appealing to people who learn in an organized way. Attendance wasn't mandatory.
He knows what he's teaching, he doesn't know HOW to teach logic. You are ONLY graded by quizzes. Are you struggling with a concept? Oh well, the only way to be tested on what you know is by the quizzes. He writes his textbook and quiz questions (gross). His textbook is riddled with filler words and some paragraphs have nothing to do with the text.
All assignments were available on Canvas. He ensures comprehension of weekly material. Weekly quizzes, with 20 straightforward questions, become manageable with consistent reading. Additionally, three reflection papers were assigned, each with clear instructions. His lectures are also commendable.
I deeply admire this professor. His classes are well-organized, and he simplifies complex philosophical ideas with ease. His introductions are clear, insightful, and humorous. The materials and daily memos were exceptionally helpful, keeping me on track. He is my favorite professor, and it's been an honor to learn from such an outstanding mentor.
Prof. Storey makes philosophy engaging with his humor and clear teaching style. Weekly quizzes and papers are manageable with consistent effort. unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the readings.
Weekly quizzes with 20 multiple choice questions and 3 reflection papers over the course of the semester. Quizzes and reflections open on Fridays, and you have one day to do the quiz and only the weekend to do the reflection. Does not offer extensions or support in any way. One extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester: cumulative quiz.
One tip I'd probably give if you take his 101 class is that notes will not be enough and you'll probably have to reread and look at the material(s) again. He grades reflection papers fairly light and just wish there was more of that and less quizzes that you can only take once, meaning that if you do bad, all you can do is wait for the next week.
