Fantastic professor. I really enjoyed his class. really opened my ears to music

Extremely nice guy. His tests are kind of difficult. He gives you great opportunities for extra credit, but they're not a total cakewalk. You can really tell how much music means to him. Stuff on the tests is all from your notes.

A little stiff when you first meet him, but once you get to know him, you see what a truly caring person he is. And oh my can he play the piano and classical guitar! Not too easy, not too hard, but a perfect balance, will definately help you out.

this class changed my whole perception of music. I listen in a whole new way, it was annoying at first, but now I am so grateful. Great teacher. Anyone who can get through all my questions deserves a medal.

He is easy to talk to about the music and about the test if you don't understand something he will explain it to you.

Great teacher, easy class. Helps you if needed and answers all your questions. Sometimes comes 10 mins late to class which is a little annoying consider your paying for an hour and 15 minutes. Tests pretty difficult, but not too hard. Gorgon Rule paper very easy assignment!

i hated this class! mark sucked! his review was nothing like the actual tests and the test are sooo hard! plus he was boring as hell. he was one of those teachers who forgot that it was "intro to music", as in i dont know anything about it! dont take it!

i only took this class because switzer was teaching it, i had no interest in music, but i passed the class!! he is very helpful, and gives brief study guides. it's an easy A and a fun class, plus you get a hot teacher who knows his stuff and can play guitar like a bad ass. i love him.

Great professor! If you have to take a fine arts course, this is the one to take. He's easy on the eyes for sure. He is enthusiastic about music, and it makes for an interesting class.

If you do the work you will get an easy A. Most students in his class who did not make good grades admitted to me after class that they did not open the textbook to read it nor study it. How can you go to college and not read the textbook. He is a great teacher and will do everything he can to help you make the grade.

Dr Switzer is the best teacher I have had at HCC, I loved his intro to music class so much that I took him for Humanities too. He is so well educated and has such a passion for what he does. He is very laid back and as long as you pay attention you will do fine in his class. He is the best teacher I wish there were more like him he is the best

I really liked him. He's really nice and approachable. He gives a list of stuff that is gonna be on the test. His tests are pretty easy. I recommend that if anyone has to take humanites to take him. if you take notes its a pretty easy class.

The first night of class I thought what did I get myself into. But give him a few weeks and youll see his sense of humor come out. Hes very laid back, if you come to class (on time) and take notes, and follow his study guides he gives out at test time you will do fine. He is very simple to understand and knows his stuff. I recommend him!!

Dr. S was awesome! He is always willing to talk to you after class, even about things other than music and his course. He offers extra credit- GO TO CLASS AND DON'T MISS TESTS, and he makes the whole class interesting. I am very glad I took this class with him and would recommend him to anyone that is willing to show up and put forth an effort.

Pretty easy class. Show up, take notes and use the study guides and you'll do just fine. I thought a lot of the class was boring, but he can be interesting at times. The majority of the class is spent on specific musical time periods. He never goes over any remotely modern music though, which is dissapointing. The book is useful mainly for the cds.

I've taken Dr Switzer for all the courses he teaches, i love him. He's the sweetest person, really cares about his students & has a passion for what he teaches. It's rare to find a teacher with these qualities. His class is NOT FOR SLACKERS goto class, pay attention & study you'll do fine. He's extremely well educated & loves teaching. BEST TEACHER

easy and boring. he's a nice guy but it's hard to stay awake. best bet is to read the chapters before class so u can participate and give a meaningful opinion. essay is easy (i got an A). just go to the USF concert on sunday, it's short. i love music, hated the class (except for the kids that sat next to me).

Easy class. He gives a study guide before each test and he'll even review. You can get 10 points extra credit on each test if you know the music pieces. Gordon Rule assignment is only 500 words.

Really understanding. He seems kind of cocky, but he's just really confident. Have you heard him play guitar? He knows his stuff and he has more culture in his pinky then most people have in thier whole body. Awesome Teacher!!!!!!!!

I loved Mr. Switzer!!! His tests are right off of the study guide and from lectures as well as the book. There are 2 opporunities for extra credit. His tests can be hard but he usually incorporates extra credit in there somehow. I would def. reccommend him!!!

Easy A! Go to class, take notes, do the reviews, and you should get an A. Test are identical reviews. And no you don't need play an instrument or need to know how to read music. Its all lectures and exams with one writing assignment. EASY!

Dr. Switzer definately knows his stuff! He has pretty good lectures that aren't too boring. Somewhat arrogant and pompus even telling us that we weren't in "real" college yet, thought that was pretty rude. But, for the most part, he's an alright guy.

Great professor! His lectures are interesting and test come directly from the lectures. Gives comprehensive reviews. He is a musician himself and often plays music in class, so you aren't just learning about the music, you are getting to experience it as well.

My favorite teacher so far! Its not really that boring. you get to listen to alot of cool music. He gives you study guides which make the tests easy. and you can get up to 30 test points for extra credit!! an EASY A!!!

He is good at lecturing. Personality wise hes cool, laidback & lowkey. Studying & showing up is key cause the tests are pretty hard and you will get no where if you dont show up & study. Learned this the hard way, not exactly easy A. I thought I was doing the worst in the class until I saw everyone else around me. Good luck.

If you go to class or have somebody the you can get the notes from and listen to the music. You will get a good grade. The tests are not easy, but they are not hard either. You have to study.

Dr. Switzer is GREAT!! He's easy going, but hates cell phones. Show up to class, and take a few notes. You will have to remember a few dates, but the tests are multiple choice and not that hard. Super dry humor, enjoys long awkward pauses and likes to surprise the class. He gets in this weird mood where he talks real slow like and if you are like me it will drive you up a wall. He really just likes to mess with the class as much as possible. Don't text in class because he will kick you out of the room for the day! Good teacher though.

Professor Switzer is an easy professor and very easy if you already have partial music background. He is kind of monotone and the lecture's kind of dra on. But the material is interesting and he usually trys to make it tolerable. Good overall.

He seemed kinda strict the first day but after that he was great and laid back. Some of the class is taking notes on a lecture, and he plays samples of music relating to the lectures for several minutes. His tests are fine if you study and he gives study guides online. You need to attend two concerts at hcc (free for students) which were alright.

I had no interest in this class prior to taking it, but it actually turned out interesting and def. broadens your mind. Switzer has a sarcastic humor, As long as you take your notes and study them, you will pass. The notes are not that difficult. If you need an easy humanity class take this one.

I wanted to take a class in the summer to scratch off on humanity section that would keep me busy but at the same time laid back. This class was just what i need. A review to study. f I study the whole review along with the music listening, Easy A. He's a great teacher to me. I've been speaking English for 3 years. If I found it easy, why not you?

This class is a lay down. It would be hard for you not to receive an A/B. He is very witty and displays a dry sense of humor. As long as you show up to class, listen and write down the key points (which he tells you) for the test you will be fine. He gives you a study guide for each test on what will be on it. You are required to see one concert.

Very intelligent and witty professor that makes his class very enjoyable. He is extremely helpful if you have any questions and makes his lessons very sculpted to the quizzes. If the student takes plenty of notes and reads the book it is an easy A, if not then you will struggle with the class. NO CELL PHONES!!! He makes that very clear. Loved him

Mr. Switzer is a really cool teacher. He have this pleasantly dry sense of humor, and he loves making the class feel awkward. He HATES when you text in class, or when you talk while he is talking. Very funny guy, pay attention in class, read the text book and attend the 2 required concerts and you cant go wrong. Very simple class. He loves when students voice their opinion, so be outspoken!!!!

Outstanding, funny prof. He knows his stuff and loves teaching his subject. I learned a lot about music that will continue to enrich me for years. My only regret is taking the class during the summer, as the course felt too short. I would have loved for it to go on for longer. Also, as above, do not even APPEAR like you are texting and no Shazam!

Be prepared to listen to hours of music at home. Class is boring but passable if you pay attention. Phone usage will have you kicked out of class. He doesn't play. If you miss more than the allotted absences your grade will drop significantly. Take notes and study for the tests and you'll pass easily.

Dr. Switzer is a professor who's knowledgeable and passionate about music, perhaps not so much about teaching an intro course. He requires you to attend 2 classical concerts on campus and write a paper describing one of them (thanks Gordon Rule) but the whole class is actually pretty enjoyable if you're in to different styles of music and history

I took him for my Introduction to Music course over the summer. He is a nice and funny teacher- also, very talented. Got an A as a final grade.

One of my favorite professors at HCC! Generates an interest in music with very interesting lectures. People say he's too strict but the people who say that could use some academic discipline. Take time to memorize material. Take good notes and study the review sheet and you will pass easily and have a greater understanding of the material.

Wonderful professor! You get out of the class what you want out of the class. If you are a bad student, you won't like him. However if you are a student who does what you're supposed to do, you will love him! He has a great sense of humor, easily outlined study guides, and interesting stories! Don't be a bad student and you won't fail!

I really enjoyed Prof Switzer class, Intro to Music. He def knows his stuff, he made me really appreciate music. I loved how passionate and serious he is about music. Print out study guide and take lots of notes, you will pass the tests. He is very thorough. Tests seem to be a bit hard, but study the definitions and composers, should be fine.

Even though I am on an Engineering major, I had to take this class. Mr. Switzer made it super interesting. If you put your effort on it, you'll get an A, also he is very caring about students, if you are having problems with the class, just let him know, and he'll take his time to explain you everything you need.

This mans class is easy and fun. Switzer has a very bland sense of humor, but i find that funny. You have to take some kind of class like this, so if you're going to HCC, i'd suggest Intro to Music with this gentleman.

Mr. Switzer is an alright teacher. He's not my favorite but he's also not the worst. BEWARE: THIS CLASS FOCUSES ON BAROQUE, CLASSICAL, AND ROMANTIC MUSIC. He kicks you out of class as soon as he sees your phone out, even if it is to check the time. Leaving the phone on the table is a maybe. He can be funny when he wants to be but he's kind of dry.

Hands down my absolutely favorite professor so far. He was incredibly helpful, funny, really taught the material well. I absolutely recommend him. You do have to attend 2 concerts per semester, but they are at the school & only take 1 hour. They fall on Friday night. But r over by 8:30. It's worth it.

There's 5 tests, 2 concerts to attend and a 1,000 word paper on how the concert went. Study well for the test! Memorize the musical pieces for extra credit! He also kept the class alive with his sarcasm and jokes. I never used the book once.

Study and get an easy A. Never used book, even tough he said you'll be graded on the readings, no you don't need the book and you'll still get an A plus theres lots of extra credit. Just be familiar with the first 20 seconds of each song given and youre good to go!

Lectures are sorta dry. Professor seems pretty easy going. Some classes feel like a waste or like they could've gotten to the point quicker. Based on 5 exams, study the reviews and they're easy. Make sure to go over the music on the syllabus, he offers a lot of extra credit for knowing the music. Very easy A.

He's a pretty good and genuine instructor. His lectures are mostly to the point and his tests are easy. Show up, take notes, and you pass. Beware of the mandatory concert attendance midway into the semester. You must sign into before the concert starts or you will not receive credit even if you were there and forgot to.

Six exams and one is dropped at the end all are open notes. There is five extra credit exams that can give you a little boost. Recommend to study for the exams so use the textbook and don't procrastinate. 2 concerts must attend for easy points, and one paper that really isn't long. Overall if you put the effort it's an easy A.

Take notes of the lectures + textbook (and listen to all the pieces at least a little bit) and you'll do fine. For summer we had to do a writing assignment comparing two songs; he says you have to turn them in through Turnitin but you don't; it's just a regular Canvas assignment upload. Great professor and easy class.

Amazing lectures not one day goes by where you aren't listening to music and sometimes he'll play his guitar. Notes are very easy to understand and lectures aren't hard. All test are open notes (only if the notes are on paper) except the final test but if you go to the assigned concerts (there is only 2 and tickets are free) you will get 100 on it

This was one of my favorite classes I have taken at HCC! Even if you're doing a fully online course, you get to watch his lectures, which are very informative and interesting! There are Honorlock tests about every two weeks, but there are study guides, and it's open book! As long as you take notes during the lectures, it's easy. I loved this class!

Six tests all open note, discussion posts before each test, one 1000 word paper and printable notes with mostly all content needed on them. Only real job to memorize music by sound and name (in the tests) and to read from the book (exact pages given). Really simple, I learned a lot about different music eras, tests are honorlocked.

it was a very easy and straightforward class. he has you watch these lecture videos (showing us youtube videos), all tests are open note, all the answers are in his study guides. it was fun because you get graded on whether you know the backstory (drama) of the people from the book. there is also an extra credit test available every week.

The class online felt lukewarm. The tests were great when you studied, there wasn't that much communication between the prof and I, mainly because there was a vibe I got from him (online) that felt unapproachable. He seems very dedicated to music and teaching others about it, but because I took the course online, I feel like I missed out on that.
