HEAD OF GOVT SO NOT EXTREMELY EASY. STRESSES CRITICAL THINKING & DOES TEST U ON THEM. TEST ARE STRAIGHT FROM LECTURES & GIVES CREDIT IF U TRY. SHORT QUIZ EVERYDAY FROM READING. TRUELY GREAT TEACHER!

No research paper or essays ! yay! A quiz every day at the beginning of class. Don't be late! But if English is not your first language, you'll want to sit in the front. he talks very fast and not very clearly.
Best teacher I have ever had! I would highly recomend him, though he is not an "easy" teacher he makes the class fun because he is really funny.
8-9 page test, review does not help, lots of critical thinking used on test, nice guy but tough grader
He makes lectures interesting but he does not understand that students take more than one class, a lot of reading assignments and is very though grader.
he is very knowledgeable, lectures are interesting and he pushes you to think critically. test are kind of tough and there will be a quiz at the beginning of each class but if you read the material you should be fine. i would highly recommend this teacher, you will learn a lot in this class
First off: he looks like the British dad from the show the nanny. Also, he requires a lot of book work and you need to have a study group. His test are difficult but all you need to do is understand he wants you to be able to apply the knowledge more than just memorize it. So you don't know have to know the exact definition of the term
not easy, but best prof I've ever had
You have to read and pay attention but he makes it interesting and is really into the subject which makes it better for me. he was available for office visits and tries to help you. hes serious but also pretty funny sometimes.
This was the first government class that I participated in. He is a good teacher, wants people to succeed. Make sure you show to class and don't leave early because quizzes matter and also there are times when he goes over content not defined clearly in the book.
He is a great professor. His lectures are very interesting. but there are quizzes every class period over reading assignments. tests are hard. its all about critical thinking and not just memorizing. If you dont study, you wont pass. Doesnt give essays, homework, or extra credit.
expert teacher. very fair class and you can make it if you follow the calendar and do your preps. But its not easy. You have to think and work in groups too. I made an B but I feel like I accomplished more than I did in a class I made an A in. take this class if you want to learn but don't do it if you don't read.
He is a really good teacher, I learned a lot with his class. and his lectures are interesting.
he made it fun, but you got to work your ass off
He is a great professor, you do have to do your work though, He is usually there to help if you ever need it. TAKE HIS ADVICE!!!!!
This is a hard class and I didn't do good on the first tests and quizzes but he made me join a study group and I didnt' want to. But now I am glad I did because I am pretty sure I'm going to pass. so I would tell you that you have to start off that way, not waiting until the end. Listen to him and you can also go to his office and he help you
Honestly don't understand how he got a high rating. As a person he is nice and funny but as a professor he is super demanding and extra. Reading assignment homework such as "Read pgs150-173". (and I'm not exaggerating.) Would recommend if you already know the material, if not no. Very hard to learn due to heavy homework.
good professor
Tiller is by far my favorite professor at HCC! He really puts thought into planning his lectures, quizzes and tests. No homework, but short quizzes every day; as long as you read the assigned chapter you won't have a problem with these. His lectures are engaging & informative - I will definitely take him for Govt 2!
Mr Tiller is my favorite teacher of HCC and very kind. Don't get me wrong-- his class is hard. But he made me want to work hard and acheve my best. He helps you if you ask for it. In fact he practically begs people to ask for help. He's not that kind who dosen't care. Everyone in class says they enjoy the lectures. But you have to read!
nice guy friendly professional
If you are have the ability to read maybe 20 pages in a week you can pass this class with an A. The only homework he ever assigned was reading which was a breeze. Quiz question come directly from the readings. And if you have common sense you can pass the test
Honestly one of the greatest teachers I've had. Lectures are fun and not a hassle to sit thru, explains everything in detail. Will offer to help after class, open door policy for extra help. The man loves to help his students, and as far as homework goes; its non existent unless you count reading which by the way its only that and nothing else.
this is not an easy class but it is fair and well organized. This guy is a very professional professer. take it if you want to learn, don't if you just want a grade. excellent teaching,
An awesome professor who makes learning government actually interesting. There are quizzes just about every day tho, but as long as you have studies you should be fine. He takes time to explain things, and loves to communicate with his students. Hes an awesome guy, definitely recommend taking his class.
Great professor. He holds a Quiz at the start of class over the required reading so you have to be there on time or else you miss the Quiz.
If you want to get the most out of your core classes, I highly recommend taking GOVT with Tiller. He won't make you write anything but does expect you to read and understand the concepts. If you don't, he's very accessible and will explain it to you as many times as you need. He's very engaging and will likely change the way you look at politics.
This professor is not the sleep and pass. YOU HAVE TO COME TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION AND PARTICIPATE! Take really good notes and he doesnt want you to fail. He provides PLENTY of supplements to help you study, and his lectures are what will be on the test. The way his course is structured if you pass his class feel assured you can pass anything .
Let me start this review by stating that I really don't like government. But somehow Tiller made it a bit bearable. He really wants you to understand so he puts emphasis on being active during class. Keep up with the studying and quizzes and you should be fine. However, if you want an easy A look for someone else.
Not an easy A, but well worth the time for your life. A great Proffesor changes everything.
Overall, really knows what he's doing. He cares about his students, his lectures are interesting, a couple games here and there. There are reading assignments but the pages are tiny. Pictures and graphs take up half to a full page. without the reading youll be lost. His quizzes get kinda tricky. pay attention, theyre timed. Its all worth it though
I know nothing about U.S government. I moved to the U.S in 2016 and in his class I learned nothing, I reached for help and he said " everything is so easy just read and study 8 hours a week" Please don't take him. I am saying this for real!!
Great class. Really good at teaching and getting your attention.
Im still in this class but just a few days ago I thought the lecture was so good I that my friend and I said we're going to rate this guy. Pretty damned incredible presentations sometimes. Even the others are good. I didn't think I would like government but I have to say that I do now.
Tiller helps me a lot and he wants students to pass. I had other teachers who don't seem to realy care but not him.
I definitely recommend this teacher. He's the most professional one I have seen at this college. The others are like high school teachers compared to him. He is not only knowledgeable (nothing really ever stumps him) but really cares about us. Keeps it all professional like he doesn't want to be our friend but wants us to succeed.
This instructor knows what he is doing and hes very organized and clear. Good lectures too even tho I am not really all that into politics. The only thing I would tell him to do better would be to give his review sheets out at the beginning, that would help.
Very good professor. I didn't think I'd like it. I never wanted to pay attention to government but its all different now. He's hard but just don't miss class and study your readings and you'll be fine.
Great professor, truly cares about his students and them learning about US government. YOU MUST READ TEXTBOOK! Quizzes are at the beginning of every class from the section you were supposed to read for homework. If you don't read you won't pass the quizzes! Lectures are over the reading you do before class. 3 tests total.
I had my doubts at first but he ended up being a really good teacher. As long as you pay attention and attend the lectures, you'll be fine. Make sure you do all the readings as well, because there is a quiz at the start of every class worth 5 points based on the book. There are no papers, only quizzes and three exams. Study the review sheet well!!
Amazing teacher. READ! STUDY! UNDERTSAND! SUPER EASY!. NO EXTRA CREDIT. IT IS WHAT IT IS. The one thing that really made this class hard for me was how he taught gov. I am a Repub., he's not and he makes that very clear. If you want a teacher who talks trash about Trump/Rep. all the time he is your teacher. I just wanted to learn gov without bias.
Taking Mark Tiller's class was one of the best academic decisions I have made at HCC. His lecture and material give you a sense of responsibility as a member of society. If you do experience any difficulties with his material, he is always eager to help. He is your biggest supporter if you allow him to be. Read. Be on time. Make a study group.
excellent instructor I didn't like the quizzes, but take his advice and you'll be fine
Took Professor Tiller for American GOVT. He has quizzes at the beginning of every single class. YOU MUST READ the textbook before class in order to pass these quizzes. 3 tests. Essay on the tests. Take good notes, SHOW UP and you will pass this class!
He is a good professor. I learned so much! But not a good class if you are too lazy to read. I didn't think Id like govt but now I really do. Sometimes he is pretty harsh and critical of govt and republicans and democrats and groups and public, but he makes us want to change things and pay attention. I think most of us appreciate that.
I didn't do very well but I also think he is a really good professor
About how hard he is, he's very hard if you don't read or attend class always. That's it. If you don't read and don't come your gonna fail. As long as you do that its not hard at all. After all its a college class, people. Just do your part. He will do his, he's completely professional.
He would not allow you to bring in a computer to take notes. He lectured the whole time and not much participation with class discussions. Quiz every class and that would be fine if it the only class I was taking was his. Working and trying to take a fulltime load with his class is not a good idea.
This was my favorite class! I highly recommend his to anyone who wants quality. He wants you to be prepared and participate and will help you a lot.
He is average makes government harder than it needs to be a last resort choice
If you are a international student, you will have difficulties to understand his accent, the classes are so deep in debates about the previous reading that he gives to the class. You really need to take time to this class, but the professor is so kind and helpful.
I like the way this professor does his class. Its the first time I've really done the assigned reading and kept up prepared. So I didn't have to cram for tests as much. At first I though the quizzes were crazy but I saw later how it helped me. I made a 100 on them and that helped my grade too.
I took this class a year ago, but it is still useful for me. He emphasizes critical thinking and analysis and that has helped me so much in many things, including my business classes. If you want to learn something useful and not just government, you should take this professor. Very good prof.
Difficult class but very interesting. I worked hard for the A and I m glad I took this class because it really opened my eyes to the world of politics. And not in the way of being for or against something or someone but about how to really understand it and examine it critically. I feel like I can look beyond the propaganda and bs now.
Tiller is really well prepared and super organized. Great class. Professional. You have to study regularly tho. I really like his emphasis on critical thinking, but not everybody does I guess.
AWESOME CLASS. Just stop looking. Tiller is the best choice for sure at Katy Campus an I imagine in HCC. I learned a lot. I could have made an A if I had prepped for the quizzes better. Thats my bad. Only thing I didn't like is that he is really strict about being ontime and I live a long way from the campus. Super nIce man though.
Hard tests but best prof in HCC
I don't know why they said he is hard. If you follow the syllabus its all there. And he's available all the time for help.
worst professor ever!!! nothing of what he goes over in class is ever on the test. Grades super tough. if i can rate him a 0 i would. STEER CLEAR OF THIS PROFESSOR
nothing of what he goes over in class is ever on the test. Grades super tough. if i can rate him a 0 i would!! STEER CLEAR OF THIS PROFESSOR
yeah, he is tough, but that's crazy what the previous guy said in TWO ratings, lol. In fact Id say its the opposite-- he tells you exactly what to do, so if you don't like that don't take him. He also gives reviews, extra help and all sorts of things to make sure you can do it. go to his office if you dont understand-- he helped me.
honestly i never rated a professor before but i felt the need to tell people never take his class unless you´re really good in government he is not ready to help anyone doesn't care if your first language is not english. doesn´t give extra credit to help with the grades. doesn´t give proper time for tests stress level is very high in his class.
Mr. Tiller is one of the greatest professors Ive ever had. Hes a wealth of knowledge and a super interesting dude. If you want to pass, you literally need to do two things: do the reading and participate in lecture. He is EXTREMELY clear about his expectations, its detailed word for word in his syllabus. Put in the work, and you will be rewarded
He's a really good teacher but he makes the class super complex for no reason. There are quizzes every day based off of the reading, so you have to read in order to pass. Also he gets upset when people don't participate so if you are shy maybe choose another prof.
The Professor is super nice and a really cool guy, grades are pretty straight forward, you read his supplements page on his HCC page and you are ready for the quiz simple as that as well there are 3 tests 2 class tests and 3rd is your final. Show up to class listen do the quiz and he is willing to help.
Really hard grader when it comes to his discussion( only for people who knows a lot of GOV). He calls you out in front of the class by your mistakes and doesn't bother helping students, instead he leaves it up to you. Loads of people dropped his class, went from 35 to 14 at the end of the semester. So that says something about him as a teacher.
The professor really cares about the students and wants them to retain the info. This class is not hard but also not easy I learned a lot of useful information in this course applicable to other courses as well as the real world. The best way to succeed in this course is to actively listen during lectures as well as study materials provided to you.
excellent professor. I hope he doesn't stop teaching. He's one of the best. I really looked forward to his classes and great lectures and discussions both in class and his office.
Favorite class this semester even tho it wasn't easy. He helped me and another student a lot so just go to his office if you don't understand something. The other guy was from another country but Tiller knew all about his country to and made a lot of comparisons that helped. But one criticism, he ran out of chocolate at the end of the semester!
Get ready to to read and study even if you know about government. He is helpful but there is lots of reading. The class consists of oral quizzes everyday, in which he selects students at random and asks questions based on the reading, 3 tests, and some extra credit. P.S.: He is also sarcastic but rude sometimes.
The absolute worst professor I have had at HCC.There is a quiz every morning of each class based on the reading. No quiz make-ups, if you're late by 5 mins you miss the quiz and you get a 0. No assignments in this class, your grade is based on the daily quizzes and the exams. The professor is extremely rude and doesn't help you if you're struggling
Professor Tiller is exceptionally knowledgeable in his field. That being said, his grading system is the worst I've ever seen. Every class, students are chosen at random to answer a question from the previous chapter of the book. If you have trouble learning from a textbook, this class is not for you. The quizzes make or break your grade.
A professional teacher. Everything is clear what we should do, syllabus has the whole semester plan on it from the beginning. I didn't think i would enjoy this course but now Im really interested in politics. He's funny too. But you gotta read the book to pass because of the quizzes, for sure. He will help if you make an effort, ask for it.
I learned a lot but it was fun-- we laughed a lot in this class. Great professor.
Professor Tiller is a nice guy but his class structure is challenging. Daily quizzes EVERY MORNING so if you were late even 5 minutes, you got 0 credits for that quiz. The quiz grade will surely save or kill your overall grade. Extra credits were only for GOV experts. Do not take it if English is not your first language, it was not an easy class.
I learned a lot in his class, from the first day he's an exciting prof. And the only hard thing is making sure that you read before class so that you can understand it, so I looked forward to the lectures actually. His powerpoints and presentations are more interesting than I have ever seen in other classes.
Prof Tiller is clear on expectations, responds to e-mail, will meet you. He does expect you work, but I got the feeling that he wanted me to be successfull. Just study the assigned reading. Be respectful and do your part and he will help you! My favorite prof and he cares and is knowledgeable about my country and the whole world.
Loved this class. And I won't forget about EJ Davis or Qui Bono!
Get ready to read. ALL of the assignments and test material is found in the textbook. Something I didn't like is at the beginning of every class, there would be a short 3-question quiz that cumulatively accounts for a chunk of your grade. Personally, I feel like I could have done better so I rated accordingly. The lectures are interesting and fun.
This professor is well organized and dependable, always graded everything immediately and always prepared to class. I didn't make an A but I would still recommend him, he was so much better than my other government professor that was actually easier but a terrible teacher.
I like the organization of this class, no big projects to do, just keep up with the class. I'm taking his other one next semester.
Good proffessor, really interesting lectures and other stuff in classroom. But at first I was like wth? about the quizzes but I got to admit that I see why he does it. I messed up the first ones but then aced the last ones when I got busy. Should have done the extra credit but it was optional, lol
AWESOME dude. I wish he was my professor next semester.
You will have to read the entire textbook. Attendance matters, there are quizzes each class. The quizzes are random, he pulls your name out of a stack of cards and you have to answer a question about the reading in front of the class. The lectures are important in regards to the tests. He gives extra credit opportunities in discussions and exams.
I rated Tiller 4 on difficulty because he teaches high level, assuming that we studied in advance. But don't worry, his tests aren't on that highest level. He goes to a deeper level in class than he tests on. Nice guy, great class. Defintely sign up if you want to think and apply. But he has expectations about paying attention/participation.
Hard tests but easy quizzes, as long as you make the effort. Many of us made 100 on the quizzes. A very professional organized professor. I think he's quiting which is too bad, cause he is really interesting and made me care more about the future.
Professor was very good and always accessible. I learned a lot not just about government but all kinds of other things because he goes deep into why things are and how politics connects to other subjects. Made me care and more curious about the world. Read and keep up with the assignmenets and you'll ace it.
I recommend this professor for sure. I looked forward to the class and the interesting lectures. I could have made a better grade is I read the assignments from the beginning. So don't make that mistake.
Just like to clarify, I'm not good at government. But Mr. Tiller is an interesting professor, the quizzes every class are extreme and get tiring but it is understandable on why he does them. He offers extra credit discussions and throughout the tests and quizzes. Get ready to know your textbook like the back of your hand though.
Best prof I have had so far. Not everyone appreciates his teaching style, but it works. If you are serious about your education, you will do well. I took him for both US and Texas Gov.
Tiller is a great professor - his lectures are engaging and he really knows his stuff. The class structure can be challenging with daily quizzes, but using resources like unstuckstudy and the textbook helps a lot. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
Show up to his class and pay attention to the lectures for an easy A. Tests and quizzes were over everything he says on the slides, and there is some textbook reading that's pretty long and you have to memorize a few things but he tells you exactly what you need to know. I only got a B because I skipped 20% of the classes
