His material is very interesting, especially for INDV 102 (Personal Morality). On the contrary, he is really strict! He wrote the book, and his writing is awful, its EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to understand, english teachers would rip it apart. tests are also hard, so dont expect anything higher then a C unless you attend class everyday!
Had him for a few classes now. Probably the best professor I've had while at the University of Arizona being here 4 years. That's about all that needs to be said.
I'll be honest- this class is terrible, but was pretty easy. Its an easy A if you just read the book and print out his slides. Theres no reason you should fail this class. He's a rude professor in class and not much is presented- he basically clarifies the readings. It helps to be in class.
Professor wrote the book and gave attendance quizzes based on readings from the book. However, professor only discussed what's in the book. Perhaps you can see the flaw. If I did and understood the reading, why come to class? If I didn't understand it, what will a quiz prove? Either way, why have one? Professor clearly never thought about this.
This class is horrible and so is the teacher. He has no idea what he is talking about. He talks all class about nothing and expects the class to take a test on a book he wrote that is horrible and makes no sense. There needs to be a different teacher available. Could be a cool class if it wasn't for him and his TAs.
awful class. dont take it.
It's a pretty easy class. You should take it if you are interested in the four controversial topics it covers; and you must be open to both sides of issues. There is no homework, papers, quizzes or mandatory attendance. Just 4 tests and each one is 25% of your grade. The only bad thing is Friday breakout sessions.
Not a bad teacher but the class kinda sucks.
As long as you possess basic reading comprehension skills, this class should be an easy A. There are no papers or comprehensive final, just 4 40-question multiple choice tests based on philosophy articles. The class itself can sometimes be a snoozer, but the articles are actually pretty interesting if you actually take the time to read them.
I enjoyed this class. It was interesting learning about people's reasoning behind what they believe and their arguments. The prof. may be confusing at times but once you know the terminology and read the articles assigned it really not so difficult. It's an easy class if you go to the lectures and read the articles.
Teacher is kinda werid and scary, especially if you read newspapers during class. But class is really easy, easy tests, no writing. Teacher is clear and interesting!
The class was easy and fairly interresting. There are only 4 multiple choice tests and no homework or papers. He provides review sheets for all the exams. Do those and the readings and its an easy A.
Clearly in love with himself. Always talking about his book and how "great" it is. Funny-looking. He'll stare at you if you text, read the newspaper or do anything else in class until you look up. Once he interrogated a kid for walking out of class when he had a nose bleed. Extremely boring!
Easy class. Don't have much to say about Timmons, I don't go to class. Just go to your discussion and you will get a B. A few 1 page papers, they take about 30 minutes to do. Take this class for the easy credit.
He's very wordy, which can make him hard to understand. But generally, you can pull off a B without going to lecture at all. If your TA is good, I'd recommend going to section, but mine sucks, so I don't bother.
There are some tricky questions on the test but if you know the material well you will do fine
Mark loves two things, his dog Sophie and his book. It is all he refers to during discussion. Not a bad class, especially if you are interested in Philosophy. Study for an hour before each test and do well on the writing assignments and an A is achievable. Decent teacher, loves the subject.
He will tell you the first day that you will have a final on the last day of finals, and that he is unwilling to have any early finals, and to drop if you don't want a last final. That said, I actually enjoyed this class. A bit boring at times, but learning how to argue correctly was interesting.
HORRIBLE CLASS!!! DO NOT TAKE! Unless you are interested in being brainwashed and taking BS completely subjective tests, stay away!!! I went to almost every single lecture and section and did all of the assignments, and still got a B. In a Gen Ed. Not acceptable. The lectures are unbearably boring.
ok, i read some of the comments below.. and i'm sorry but unless you're retarded, you should be able to get an A in this class.. i won't deny that the tests are tricky, but i mean come on, you have to study- just read the book (seriously, you have to). Great teacher and GREAT CLASS. I would highly recommend it!
A good class overall, READ THE BOOK!! in depth and an A shouldn't be a problem. There are 4 tests and 4 short writing assignments. The test can be tricky but if you read the book and attend class every so often they are actually fair. The writing assignment were very short and fairly easy and straight forward. Interesting class, I learned a lot.
You need to figure out things on your own. Tests cover way more in depth than in class. He doesnt cover what is needed on a test at all.
I attended every class, took great notes, read all assignments & also did ALL the study guides & I was confdent about my tests, but when i got the results they just killed me! he is not willing to help you when u need it when i asked to meet him he said go and talk to ur ta & he didnt help me in any way. class is interesting but very hard professor!
This is "Personal Morality": a Philoshophy class. I love Psychology & Philosophy so I truly enjoyed the subject. As for the professor, he gives all the necessary info in his lectures and the discussion class is a LIFESAVER for the exams and papers. It was pretty easy to get an A, just take good notes (no laptops allowed) and go to discussion!
I had Professor Timmons for Personal Morality. I was extremely interested in the class, and I enjoyed learning the material, but the class is only out of 200 pnts total and only 40 pnts are not from exams. I would not recommend this class to anyone. Too much time is spent listening to ignorant people debate.
Easy class. Grade is based on 4 exams and 4 writing assignments. Exams are based off his lectures. You also get a study guide for each exam. Timmons himself is very clear and tries his best to keep our attention.
The class was easier than other gen eds. There were only four tests, non-cumulative, and four papers due a week after each test. It was really easy, as long as you studied for about two hours the night before the test. The teacher wasn't the most interesting, but overall not bad. I'd recommend.
Not the best philosophy course I've taken, it's not an easy class but if you come to class everyday(you have to) then you should be ok...his lectures are a bit confusing sometimes
If you go to class, read the book, and study for the tests you will get a B or higher. This class is pretty much an easy B but a hard A.
He was a good teacher, just boring at times
I took Personal Morality and it was an ok class. The material wasn't too difficult, lectures were boring at times but nothing horrible. Tests and papers aren't extremely difficult but you should still study and put some effort.
Really interesting class. The topics we learned about in Personal Morality were relevant to our lives and overall beneficial to learn more about. Teacher was nice and clear about discussing the material. Obviously enjoys the topics, which makes learning easier. 4 papers, 4 tests. Really easy class, but you learn a lot!
This professor is my favorite so far. His classes are mostly lecture, but some days students join in making it more of a discussion. The topics are interesting and relevant. Anyone who likes debates will love this class. And you will never know his stance on any topic which is a pleasant change from most other professors. 4 2-pg papers & 4 tests.
Not easy. The work to get an A in this class is not worth it for a gen ed. He's very unclear and loves switching back and forth between slides just fast enough for you to not write them down. Slides are unclear, so go to class. The class is pretty pointless and you don't really have a say in opinion, it's very one-sided. Most of his TAs suck.
Tests may be hard if you don't attend class. About 90% of the material in the test can be found from the slides which he conveniently posts, he also posts a study guide a couple days prior to his exams which are also very useful.
The tests were easy as long as you either attended the lectures or read the text book. He really explains what the authors in the text book are saying, so it was more helpful for me to go to class. Attendance not mandatory. Multiple choice tests.
Personal Morality is a the most boring class I have ever taken. Topics seem interesting, but they are not. Read the book, its the only way to pass the tests. And it would be your benefit to show up to lecture if you can stay awake through the whole thing, which is impossible.
Timmons is a clear teacher. Personal morality is not hard at all and very interesting. You have to read to do well on the tests, but if you attend lectures, the book is easy to understand and read. Good class.
As long as you read and attend lecture you should be more than fine. Professor Timmons is extremely clear in the important points of every article and tells you everything you need to know for the test. There is no cumulative final but rather 4 tests and 3 papers. Would definitely recommend this class, I found it extremely interesting.
Super easy class. Everything you need to know is on the slides. Never read the book and got an A in the class. Just know the basic concepts.
Super easy class. Everything you need to know is on the slides. Never read the book and got an A in the class. Just know the basic concepts.
Very easy class but only if you attend the lectures and discussion sessions. On all the papers they spell out for you what you need to write. I think I missed 2 points on tests and papers combined this whole semester.
This class is extremely easy. Pay attention in class, go to discussions. The papers are just reiterations of what you study, this class requires almost no critical thinking skills at all. Made for a very very easy A.
Timmons has a great class. His class is very interesting. Although he said that class is mandatory, it really isn't. To get an A you must go to discussions, although not mandatory, at the end it will bump your grade is on the cusp. Very interesting topic and Timmons knows alot and is a great prof.
Class content was boring unless you can get into it. But super easy. If you can actually go and sit through the lectures, you'll be fine.
I took this class because I needed a gen ed. My roommate took it previously and she recommended it. It was an good class ,the topics we covered we're very interesting. The tests were a little difficult because they were conceptual as well as straight facts. Also there were three essays during the semester. Use office hours and read the book!
It was ridiculously easy to get an A in this class. I recommend skipping lecture and going to discussion - your TA will review everything from lecture that week. No homework other than three 1-2 page papers and there are four tests, all multiple choice. Read the book/powerpoints before the tests and you'll do fine.
Although neither the lectures or discussions are mandatory, he often includes information on the test that he only will talk about in the lecture and if you have a borderline grade and attend discussion a lot, you're more likely to get a higher grade. Finally the topics are pretty interesting, I can't see why you wouldn't go to the lectures.
Easy class if you go to class, take notes, read the book, and go to discussion. If you don't do any of this, you will not do well on tests or papers.
Easy class if you show up. You are pretty much guaranteed an A if you do the study guides before each of the four tests. Also the three essays pretty much only consist of restating information on the powerpoints
I find the class extremely boring. I never show up and do really well on all the tests. Go to discussion and read the text book and you will be fine.
sitting in his class right now. so boreddd. dont go to class just discussion. class is easy as long as you put study time in
Timmons seems like a really nice guy. His class is really boring (at least for me) but it's very easy. I get away with coming to class once a week and still get A's on the tests and essays. If you read the articles and have common sense, then you should do fine. It helps to be a good writer; you'll pretty much assured an A.
He is a fairly biased professor in choosing what moral theories to present. The class can be pretty boring, but if you are interested in social issues or something like that, then it could be fun. It is so easy that it is a joke, just try not to let your work slack on the last unit of the course, which is pretty boring.
Prof. Timmons is a great professor, he is great at presenting the material and proving adequate notes. The discussions are always lively and I would recommend the class. The first units sexual morality, abortion, and animal treatment are very interesting, but the torture/terrorism unit was really boring.
Timmons was interesting, but the lectures just moved in a circle. They got super boring. Thankfully its a huge class and you can just go to your discussion and get all the info. The readings are a must! His tests are tricky. Pay super attention :/
His lectures definitely go in circles and just reiterate what is in his books. Just make sure to read the assigned material. I had a D all semester and then got an A in the class, go figure.
Literally wrote the book on ethics. He can be a bit long-winded if you get the material quickly, but makes sure he's crystal clear about whatever he's talking about. He's also very clear with his requirements, assignments, and grading, which makes your life much easier. Overall, good quality, very fair, very knowledgeable, and passionate.
Timmons is a great professor! We had 4 papers due (Including midterm and final) He is very clear on how he grades the papers, no homework. Does give random quizzes (3 questions.) My midterm and final was pretty much take home. Best class I've taken at the University of Arizona.
His lectures reiterate his book material. I found this class to be confusing because of the reiteration. Basically a bunch of memorizing different moral theories. A little hard for a gen ed.
First time I took an upper division philosophy class and I was nervous but this professor was always clear with his lectures and requirements. The feedback he gave was awesome and if you go to class you often get extra credit, which saved a lot of my classmates. I missed the final because I overslept and he still let me make it up. Great guy.
Pretty dry lectures, but really easy. 3 papers and 2 exams. The papers are easy if you just look up the topic and form your own opinion or regurgitate the general information about it. Exams are a bit harder. He gives 10 pop quizzes that all count as extra credit (saved my grade). As long as you pay attention this is common sense stuff.
Solid professor with a good knowledge of his subject. Lectures are clear, and the coursework is not too difficult. If you can to take his class for a major requirement, definitely do it. Hes' quite good, but if you aren't into his subject of moral theory, I wouldn't tell anyone to go out of their way to take his class.
He rambles a lot and it's weird that you buy his book and read it then he lectures over his own book that he wrote. He assigned several papers that were graded pretty roughly, don't expect to do well if your a half-ass it kind of student. Supplemental reading is important if you want to do well on papers/tests. good lectures.
Professor Mark Timmons is a great professor and a brilliant mind. Don't take this course thinking its going to be an easy A. He has very high standards for his papers and if you don't give full effort you will fail his essays.I think he gives these high standards because he wants to get rid of the students that don't care.
Lecture heavy
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS!!!! For a Gen-Ed it's easy at all! It is a very confusing class and the topics are super hard. If you're good at writing you will probably do pretty well. His book is helpful but you will need to study a lot
My major involves a lot of philosophy so I found this class very interesting, but if that's not your thing this class will probably suck. I thought Timmons was an easy to fair grader; I never had a problem getting A's on papers because all of the info you need for the class is in his book. He's a very nice guy and knows what he's talking about.
I personally really enjoyed Professor Timmons class. He very knowledgable in ethics and moral theory and I learned a lot. Also, he wrote the book we used in this class, so if you don't understand the lecture you can find everything in the book. That being said, people who aren't familiar with philosophy will probably struggle a bit in his class.
Passionate professor who lives and breathes philosophy. I highly suggest going to office hours to get clarification on papers (majority of your grade) and attending class to earn easy quiz points. He is very thorough so lectures are long and dense, but class is not impossible if you pay attention.
Pretty great professor, very intelligent. Class is lecture heavy but if you pay attention and go to class it's totally doable. The assigned reading is his own book which makes the class a lot easier. If you're interested in philosophy I highly recommend his class!
Really easy class, most of the grade is based on the three papers which are pretty easy to write. The only thing is that his lectures can get a bit boring at times, but the subject matter is really interesting.
Grades are based on a few assignments that are worth a lot so if you don't pick up on his teaching style and what he wants immediately it'll be your downfall. I sucked on the first assignment and I figured it out for the remaining ones but the first one basically pulled my grade. He is also a little snippy and I didn't feel comfortable asking ?'s
Throughout this course, Mark spent the entire semester bullying the one gay student in the class. His lectures are uninspired and he literally had us watch a video for an entire lecture like it was high school. If you're looking for ethical inspiration, look elsewhere. Anyone can have a theory about morality, but very few actually embody it.
Good at lecturing, but shamed people by suddenly cutting himself off ing at anyone quietly entering/leaving. Shamed people who slept. Chill, dude--lecture is important, but not all college students have life figured out&they prob feel worse about it than u do. Also had a middle A prior to final, midterm&final same level but rando harsh grading
His lectures and essay assignments really help you understand the course material and are super easy to understand. He is also very accommodating to meet with you outside of class time and answer any questions. But, if you are not a fan of reading or writing I would not take his course as more than 90% of the grade is based on essays.
He gives very little feedback when you do poorly.
This class is set up in a way that makes comprehension really easy -- reading assignments twice a week before each lecture, then the lecture thoroughly explains the reading and clears up any confusion. Lectures can be a bit boring at times, but Mark is really good at explaining difficult philosophical concepts, especially since he wrote the book
This teacher lectures based on his reading assignments. Strict grader when it comes to the criteria of the paper. Will answer your questions with complicated vocabulary and doesn't usually elaborate.
This class had 5 papers and a 4 point quiz every week. He wants the papers to be written as an explanation or application for what you have learned and doesn't look for creative writing. I did well on all the essays but have friends who struggled. If you ask for clarification you'll be fine. He's very knowledgeable but lectures can be boring.
At the beginning of the year I was forced to take this class for a Gen Ed credit. I decided to be optimistic and stay in the class and completed the first paper assigned. Unfortunately this was a mistake when I was hit with an F on my very first paper and exceptionally rude feedback. I'm sorry I'm a freshman that doesn't understand/need philosophy.
Only required material was the textbook he wrote, felt really good to pay him a premium on top of my tuition. Feedback on essays is harsh yet uninformative, and it felt like everything was graded pretty subjectively. Course material is interesting enough but he gets mad argumentative when you ask questions, usually being pretty rude about it too.
Mark Timmons is one of the best professors I had. Contrary to the eclectic image of a philosophy professor, he is attainable, friendly, and engaging. He is meticulous and clear in his lectures. His meticulous and detailed approach towards his lectures influenced my own approach towards litigation later in life as an attorney. And he is a good guy.
Out of the 4 PHIL courses I've taken, Timmons is by far the best professor. He will test your knowledge but give you the best feedback you can receive. The papers are very difficult and heavily weighted but showing up and engaging in class is useful. If you are required to take this class, you will not like him at first but give him some time.
