Awesome teacher...he drew a cat on the board in a box yesterday and put poison in the box...then we fried a gherkin...very funny guy at times. At others...the class seems like Chemistry...ewww....
He is an awesome teacher. He seems like he connects very well with the students and everybody seems to like him a lot. Also he is very responsive.
Funny. He's young, so he's very understanding of the young students. Great teacher, too.
He's a very awesome guy and extremely funny. Love his accent. Makes chemistry seem easy. Definately take chem with him!
Gives you a practice exam before every exam that makes a perfect study guide; makes the exams much easier. Puts all notes on chalk board for class. Good teacher - easy going and funny guy.
Very good teacher. Always telling jokes and doing experiments. Writes all notes on board and always has opportunities for bonus points. Gives practice exams out and then goes over them, makes tests almost exactly like practice tests. Very great teacher, always there to help you.
Much better than my high school AP chem teacher. Not only is this guy funny, but he also keeps great office hours and always encourages his students to come get help from him. He genuinely cares about EACH student, and the classroom is an easygoing and fun atmosphere.Would take another class of his!
Wonderful professor. He is always in his office and will help you at any occasion. He is the happiest guy I have ever met, and you can tell he simply loves what he does. British humor, but you get used to it. A+ (best and easiest chem 115 teacher)
Chaos!
Professor Tinsley is very funny and laid back. Labs are interesting - tests aren't too bad. You'll enjoy the class.
Class was a joke. Was the easiest class i had all semester and i took P.E. Very nice and helpful
Lectures more than he shows examples. Very funny because he is from England.
uh hard stuff if your lost ..ya?
Tinsley is so freaking great, very funny and all around a nice guy
Nice guy...actually cares about students. Tests are easy if you look at the practice tests he emails you. Quizzes weren't bad. Goes over everything on tests. Writes all notes on board. Overall good class with him.
Easy class if you attend the classes....quizzes every week but arent hard. very funny guy and keeps your attention in class but is kind of hard to understand because of his english accent. very good teacher though
Best chem class you'll take. He's hilarious.
he's a good teacher
it's the best class I've ever taken, and the guy is so funny , although he's crazy
Best chem instructor, hands down! Very laid-back and is always willing to help his students. May not be very faithful to his office hours, but is willing to make appointments in advance. Tests and quizzes are very fair, but be sure to attend class regularly if you wish to score well on the final...notes are extremely important.
Great Teacher. Keeps Things Interesting
Tinsley rocks. He's pretty eccentric and talks about a lot of random stuff, which makes it easy to pay attention. Tests are generally fair and he practically tells you exactly what is going to be on them. In-lab quizes sometimes have some random questions on them. His easiness may put you at a disadvantage on the final (not written by him).
Definately a good teacher. A little eccentric but really funny. I enjoyed his class a lot.
good pror
Tinsley is a good teacher. He explains everything well and his lectures are really helpful. Also, sometimes if we have time he'll tell random funny stories.
He is a really fun guy, but general not very prepared or helpful. I enjoyed his class, but you do not learn very much. Our last test average was a 55!
He's hilarious and some of his stories are amazing!!! I got a D in the class because I really do not understand chemistry, but I HIGHLY recommend this prof. He's the BEST!
Mark was definitely one of the most resourceful teachers ever, along with his crazy sense of humor. i met with him every week for 3 hours and only 1 hour out of it we would discuss chemistry. i do believe that getting a name to name basis with him made him bump my grade up because there is no way i was rocking a C avg. Loved him
Really a great guy. His stories and humor kept everything interesting. However, be willing to work for your grade.
He is honestly a hilarious person. If you want a good grade in this class you have to work at it. I went to his office hours ALL THE TIME and I still have a C. This class requires so much time and energy. Make sure you prepare yourself for that. BTW the Lab for this sucks and so does the chem notebooks b/c you pay for the lab manual that u dont use
Class was difficult and requires studying but he is a great teacher. He has a sense of humor which lightens the mood during lecture. Highly recommend him to future students
Great teacher, makes class fun by making jokes and telling funny stories. Need to study for the tests just like any other class but he wants you to do well not fail. he will help you. Tinsley is the man
Very interesting teacher! I would recommend him to anybody! Best Chem teacher
Dr. Tinsley is hilarious, and provides good examples. His lectures are clear and straightforward, and his exams are relatively easy. Fun guy to talk to. Loved the class, although I was absent often since attendance wasn't mandatory.
Tinsley is a really great teacher in that he really tries to make the topics interesting. However, you really have to study hard for his tests. It's going to require at LEAST 2 hours a night of solid studying and reviewing notes. He's really easy to talk to and will do what he can to help you out if you're having problems with anything.
I mean this guys is alright. He makes mistakes during class but overall hes a pretty good professor. He is helpful and will try to help you whenever he can. Study hard for the exams and those old exams he gives you sometimes help but not usually. Wish he would give study guides...
AWESOME professor. Willing to work with you if you make the effort. He's extremely understanding and does his best to help his students do well! Also, I LOVE HIS ACCENT!
this was a good class, he does some cool expeiments and he is alwayseoered in chalk dust at the end of each class. hahaha deffinitly a good professor
Very approachable guy. Very understanding. Good teacher. Show up and take notes, study hard for exams.
I would not reccomend him. He teaches in a very weird way and it's hard to understand him. The old exams he gives are way easier than what is coming at you. Does not prepare you at all for the final exam. Taking with a different professor now and have gotten way better grades then with him. The material he covers is not what you will see.
He's a good teacher that keeps you focused in class on what he's talking about. At the end of the day you should know how to do whatever he taught. Always available to help outside class it seems. Attractive both with his looks and his accent.
Dr. Tinsley will get you right through 115 if you need too. If you need 116, organic, or any standardized test DO NOT I repeat DO NOT take him. Do not follow his study practice exams. I would recommend Dr. Battin over anyone in the department. She is strict but man do you learn!
bad teacher. don't take him. he gives no review guides, he just gives you old exams that are not like the real test. his notes are sloppy. if you want to learn and do well in chemistry, take another teacher.
Dr. Tinsley knows his chemistry, but does not know how to teach. Tests were harder than expected, and no preparation was given. The class itself wasn't super hard, especially if you've taken high-level chemistry in the past. Lots of self-teaching involved. Do not buy $300 book, wasn't opened all semester.
Tinsley is like a british Ben Stiller,a great professor for someone who has taken 115 before. If you're taking 115 over you should take him! He's more laid back than other chem professors. I didn't really use the book..little during finals. His teaching isn't that great but his test and labs aren't bad so go for it! Exams are most of it anyway.
Tinsley is overall a great professor. He can be confusing at times when teaching, but gives you plenty of material that allows you to learn what you need to know. Tests and lab are significantly more lenient than other professors. Textbook was never used.
Dr. Tinsley's lectures were so disorganized and scatterbrained that they were hard to follow along. He would talk circles around himself daily and often didn't make sense.
Top guy. Love his unusual British accent. Has a passion for the subject. Very helpful
Very funny. Nice accent, is very entertaining. Gets to the point and leaves out much of the information that is not needed. Does not give excess homework. Very personable. Was never bored.
Tinsley is single handedly the greatest professor of all time. Hands down.
He was my absolute favorite professor. Such a kind/sweethearted man who cares about his students & material. He's passionate about chemistry enough to find ways to joke around. He's very positive & laid back. Attendance was taken sporadically but not mandatory. A lot of quizzes but really easy. ELSI was annoying. But, I would definitely recommend.
Mr. Tinsley is an amazing person, but as a teacher, I would not recommend. If you can't teach yourself, do not take him. He is a great person and is hilarious, but he is not the best at teaching.
If you have to take 115, take Tinsley. He will help you with anything that you are struggling with. His tests are not that bad either. He doesn't try to trick you at all. He genuinely cares about your grade and mental well-being. Bests Chemistry teacher to take.
Very, VERY British. But he's funny, and light on the homework. Lots of lecture time, but he makes in as interesting as he can.
I loved this professor but the only downfall is that he writes all his notes on the chalkboard so if you miss class you must get notes from a friend. If you miss class a lot you won't do well in this class. There is some extra credit opportunities which will help your grade. Overall, I think he explains and connects concepts well.
Very awesome teacher, but his teachings were a little scatter-brained. Didn't fully grasp concepts and probably could have if they were explained a little better. Tests were somewhat tricky and they expected you to know exactly how many steps were involved to solve each problem. Info was inferred and if you weren't paying attention, you lost points
Mark Tinsley is the best professor of all Chem 115 instructors, and also the easiest. He has an awesome British accent and is HILARIOUS lol. It is a very hard class, especially with no experience with chemistry, but it will be much easier if you have his class. Homework is easy and only about 20 questions each week. Solid choice!!
Incredible professor and an incredible person. He isn't there to trick you. Go to class and study the reviews for tests, go to office hours, sign up for PLTL, and you'll receive an A. It takes a bit more work than a typical freshman level class but Tinsley makes it as manageable as humanly possible. If you need to take this course, take Tinsley!
Dr. Tinsley was a very funny guy and he portrays the material in a basic simplified way. he doesn't beat around the bush on exams. he will gives you mostly straight question answer where not much converting is required. he also gives practice exams which reflect the exam he gives. must study a lot though to get an A. taking again in 116
Top-notch professor and person. I took him for 115 and 116. His lectures can seem very broad, but if you meet with him, he clarifies anything you are confused about exponentially. He is not difficult, but the class itself is. There is not a curve, so don't ask, but he is all about his students passing the class, legitimately. Study and ask for help
great teacher. definitely the easiest 115-116 professor if you are looking for an A
This class is hard no matter what. I personally liked Tinsley and met with him at his office often for help. He is a funny guy and kind of felt like my friend at the end of the semester. He will dumb things down for you and tell you ONLY what you need to know for exams if you ask. I struggled in this class but probably would have done worse
I had Tinsley for 115 and 116. He had writes notes so you need to go to take notes. In my opinion, he is the most fair of chemistry professors and the most personable. 10/10 recommend.
Tinsley makes class as fun as is possible for an intro chem class that no one really wants to take. He tries to make examples out of every day things that people are familiar with. He is really helpful and loves to chat after class. Beware of the lab quizzes. Do the homework and you'll be fine. Don't, and the quizzes will drag you down a grade.
Dr. Tinsley is a great teacher. His tests are pretty easy and the lectures are interesting. Also, he's British so it makes everything way better.
Tinsley was by far the best Chem 116 professor offered at WVU. His tests are much more straight-forward and out of the notes than other professors. He made me actually like chemistry. Also, he's super funny so even if chemistry really bores you, he can spice it up! I would definitely take him again.
Awesome professor, has a cool British accent which makes him fun to listen to. Really nice guy and made chemistry a good experience for me
Tinsley was such a great teacher! I went into the semester nervous, and came out confident because of him. Go to class because he does give notes, and his examples and homework assignments mirror the lab quizzes/exams. He was really helpful during office hours and really cared about his students. If you have the chance, take him!
Fantastic professor. He writes everything he says on the chalkboard so you need to attend class in order to pass. Exams are very easy. He posts old exams on ecampus which are a great way to study. He drops in a joke or two during the lecture that are quite funny! Absolutely would take again!
Dr. Tinsley shows the brightest smile towards all his CHEM115 disciples during class. He always brings a charismatic and humorous approach to his lectures so I've never been bored during one. He teaches in a way that the scientists who discovered theories did so you get the fundamental understanding of what you learn. He's a lovely British fellow.
I absolutely loved Tinsley and would love to take him again. I had him for 116 and he made the learning easy to understand.
Tinsley is the best 116 professor WVU has, but I still wouldn't consider him a "great" professor. 65% of your grade is off exams. Best way to study is going over the notes in depth.
Tinsley is hysterical. Very odd, but you won't want to miss a lecture because he may say something you will never forget. In terms of the chemistry he is a very good communicator and he makes his class pretty easy and straight forward. The class was extremely easy for me and most people I knew. You will love him if you take him.
His lectures are very boring, and his exams are very hard comparing to what he explains in class. The class as a whole was a rough ride, he does not post the lectures online and it can be hard to copy everything down. The exam is very hard, prepare for it from the first day of class. Honestly, just study from the textbook!
Dr. Tinsley is by far the best professor I've had I took him for 115 and 116, its chemistry so obviously it is hard, but he makes it manageable, he's by far the easiest of the gen chem professors. He gives alot of resources to help you do well on exams, and is always available in office hours (which are very helpful). He genuinely wants to help you
Dr. Tinsley is by far my favorite professor and his class changed the way I view chemistry. It's important to attend lecture as he writes out notes on the board, and may drop a joke or two. I went to his office hours frequently, which proved to be very helpful. There are no words to describe how much I will miss this class.
He makes chemistry fun. Really laid-back and funny. Love his British accent. One of my favorite professors ever. 10/10 would take again.
i got a 93 in chem115, by no means am i stupid. tinsley is by far the worst professor iv ever had. he has no clue how to teach and leaves every student to fend for themselves. not worth going to class, you learn nothing. guy must be on crack to think you can learn anything he is writing on the board.
Hilarious Prof, knows what he's talking about. Gives extra credit for attendance, Lab is easy exams aren't too bad. Go to recitation for example worksheets that are similar to the test and you'll be well prepared. Puts effort into students that put out effort to do well. Study well and you'll pass
Prof. Tinsley gave great examples of questions that would be on the exams in lecture and was willing to work with students one-on-one during recitation. Took time to explain difficult concepts as well accepting and answering questions students were struggling with. Just be aware that much of your grade comes from exams.
Tinsley is a maniac. He has chicken scratch handwriting, so try to be there early and sit in the front. The exams he writes tend to trip people up and students in his class tend to do better on the ACS final than on his exams. Save yourself the trouble and take Ming Ming, he is much better at 116 than 115.
I think Prof. Tinsley has ruined the topic of chem for me altogether. He is unorganized, doesnt explain things well (often just writes down a question and writes the answer from Google without solving it), and studying hard still does no good because he never gives examples like the ones on tests. Very frustrating, leaves little room for success.
he tries to make the class fun,but it doesn't make up for his awful organization. he wrote out his own to do list on the board of stuff he hasn't done for us yet once, and none of his examples are on the exams. he is too scatterbrained / does not know what he's doing. he also won't give you any indication of what your grade is throughout the year.
class got an average on every exam of around 60, good indicator of how little he teaches
He is a very nice guy, however the Knewtons don't really compare to his exams. The exams were super hard, but he's super understanding!
great teacher. explains topics so everyone can understand. doesnt do anything online, so its very important to go to class and take plenty of notes. textbook isnt necessary if you go to class and take notes.
Dr. Tinsley's notes are a bit difficult to understand but if you're in class and carefully go over them before the exam they will make sense. His exams are pretty easy and he doesn't try to put trick questions on them, he tells you the kinds of problems that will be on them ahead of time as well. He's pretty nice but can be unorganized at times.
The exams make up most of your grade. Tinsley is a great professor who really knows what he is talking about. He has always made himself available to students and makes the lectures interesting. For a very hard class, he makes the material a lot easier to understand.
I went from Battin in 115 to Tinsley in 116 and my world changed. Tinsley is a great professor. He makes jokes during lectures and explains everything really well. He even has review sessions before the exam. Just go to class, do the HW and labs, and study like 2 nights ahead and youre good. His exams are very straight forward.
Mark is the man. He's a goofy englishman with a great sense of humor. His class is definitely challenging but if you put effort in and do the recitation worksheets then you be sure to pass.
Tinsley is a good chemistry professor and is a fair grader. This class is VERY hard, but it doesn't have to due with Tinsley. I definitely wouldn't take this class with another difficult class. You will depend on your notes throughout the whole class and you'll need to study A LOT! Tinsley is funny and wants to help you succeed. Final was curved.
Funny guy but not the best teacher. Class is extremely hard but he ended up curving grades at the end of the semester
Loved him! He was nice and funny. He even gave a little bit of extra credit.
He definitely is hard to contact, he usually takes a few days to respond to emails. Also he doesn't do the best job of answering questions. I definitely had to teach myself alot and most of the other people in my class are not doing as well as me.
I have taken three other chemistry classes before this and got an A in each of those classes. This class is so difficult for no reason. If you have questions, he will not answer your email until it is too late. His lecture slides are hard to read, which makes it harder to teach yourself everything. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking him online...
Takes days to reply to emails and is very short with answers. His handwriting is hard to read which makes things even harder to understand. All lectures are prerecorded so you can't ask live questions. Only grades are exams and quizzes. Exams are impossible. This class is awful online I wouldn't recommend taking his class to anyone. EXTREMELY HARD
Professor Tinsley is great. I feel that I did fairly well throughout his class as his notes were straight forward and helped a lot for exams He also gives out plenty of helpful assignments to work though for practice. I feel he gets a bad rep because people do not do the greatest but the material is just very difficult to understand so study a lot.
Do the self assessments to study for the exams. Try and do every problem not just the suggested ones. Not many examples in the notes so its mostly teaching yourself. As long as you know how to do assessment questions you'll pass. Curved the final. Not a bad teacher but not great. Have to rely on yourself to study a lot.
He was pretty good overall. You definitely have to study and work very hard to get a good grade. Many people in my class failed but I ended up with an A.
Dr. Tinsley could care less about you mental health. His lecture slides are hard to read and are very fugue and confusing when presenting material online - kinda hard to teach yourself with. Words his exams as if he's purposely trying to make you confused or mess up. 0/10 would never recommend online.
The lectures are useless because you cant read what he writes and theyre not very helpful. His other videos can help though. Overall not good for online. Whole class is very confusing.
Dr. Tinsley is a nice man overall, but his class is poorly set up. Literally the first two exams only had 24 questions on them and covered a whole month of material on both. Not fair if you ask me because even if you miss barely any questions your grade is tanked. Sets the exams up so hard as if hes trying to confuse you.
I really liked chemistry as a subject before I took Tinsley. I have always liked a challenge, but with his style of teaching (especially online) it is practically impossible to follow along. His handwriting is absolutely awful, not to be rude, but he has chicken scratch handwriting. If you take him, good luck.
Absolutely horrible. Doesnt explain anything well. Cant read his handwriting. Tests are nothing like the quizzes. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER OPTION!!!!!
Recorded lectures are at turtle speed, super monotone, and not engaging at all. Watch them at 1.5 speed if you want to stay sane. Terrible handwriting. In-class lecture is useless because he rarely even works out the problems; I stopped going. He doesn't realize that poor grades can be due to a lack of teaching or poor exam questions.
Rarely worked through problems with the class and lecture videos were long and boring. Made the material kind of difficult to understand. He is a nice guy though!
Overall, Tinsley is a great guy. However, the class is poorly set up. Exams are only 22-24 questions long but are worth collectively (3 exams+final) 75% of your overall grade. His videos are very long and monotone (play them at 1.75x speed), but offer a good amount of information. If you do the self-assessment and old exam questions, you'll be fine
Dr. Tinsley was a good professor for CHEM116 especially if you have a strong background of chemistry going into the class. The class can be difficult, and requires extensive studying in order to do well on the exams. The lectures can be boring and overly long, but they do provide all of the necessary information needed for studying. I recommend.
I had Dr. Tinsley for chemistry lab and there were no meetings. He gives really good feedback on homework. When you do a Zoom lecture with him, he likes to get to know you on a personal level, which is nice. He is also British, so be prepared for his accent. Whenever I would email him at 3 in the morning, he would respond within 5 minutes.
Told us he was afraid of numbers which isnt something you want to hear from a professor who teaches a math based chem class. He didnt work out any problems all semester, so you basically had to teach yourself. He was also horrible about responding to emails in a timely manner. He did curve the final and gave a tiny bit of extra credit though.
If you attend lectures and do homework class is not bad. You have to put the work in but thats due to the material not Tinsley. Lectures fairly boring but the info you need to know is in them. He did say hes afraid of numbers so he didnt work out problems at first (did eventually) but he is very helpful if you go to office hours I recommend!
I had Tinsley for an online class where he posted lectures for us to watch and we would meet on Wednesdays to do review questions. His lectures were a little long but they are very good. I would have probably received an A but I slacked off and didn't complete the extra practice problems he posts. He is a very funny guy and I would highly recommend
DOES NOT care about students. At the end of the day whether you understand the material, pass or fail he does not care. Not a good professor but somehow not not the worst at WVU. Exams make up majority of grades averages on said exams never over a 60. Exam questions worded much harder than in class questions work. Aleks HW every week.
Chem 116 at WVU is a challenging course in general, but it seemed like Dr. Tinsley only put in the minimal effort to help students. He is an amazing person, but doesn't always explain things very well in class during lectures. I would recommend going to his office hours, because then he will get to know you better and you will learn more.
I feel that this mans lecture material didnt reflect his exams. Ive never gotten such low test scores in my life.
Mark Tinsley is a very approachable and nice professor. However, his lectures can be hard to follow and does not provide a lot of examples. Without the chem tutoring offered at the chem learning center, I would not have passed. His lectures alone are not enough to go off of, and neither is the Aleks homework.
Tinsley is the most unorganized, chicken scratch writing, wanna be professor i have had in college. He never starts lessons with a concise topic, always jumps around, doesnt explain things, and has no order to the things he teaches. Horrible. Ming ming was 100000% better.
Chem 116 is a miserable, difficult course. Dr. Tinsley is a madman and does not think in a straight line so his in-person lectures can be hard to follow. But if you go to class, watch his video lectures, and do the extra practice problems he really sets you up for success on the exams. He won't try to trick you.
He switched to a different HW program this year; had no idea how it worked, and assigned random topics that didn't reflect exam material at all. I would get 100s on his quizzes, & then when it came to the exam I'd get 40s. His material never reflected his exams, and I ended up having to drop his class. I got a 95% in 115, but had to drop this class
Tough class, having taken AP Chem in High School. Go to Class, do self-ass make sure Quiz and HW grades are all above 95. Not very hard to get a 100% on both. Study for the first 3 tests using self-assessments, quizzes, HW, and old exams. The last test is the hardest (in my opinion). Our Final was the ACS final. You are given 2.5% bonus at the end.
love love love this man. so organized. times his lectures perfectly. very easy to get a hold of and will provide great help. really forces you to understand chemical concepts. he provides so much practice material, it is almost impossible to make less than a B on any assignment as long as you put in the work. amazing professor overall!
Chem 116 is a hard class overall. However, Dr. Tinsley was a good professor and made lectures interesting and not boring. He cares about his students and he's always there to help in a timely manner. He offered homework that would lower how much exams were worth in the class and he also offered a lot of extra credit. Overall, he's was great.
In a world where classes are shifting to a heavy focus on online lectures and material, I appreciate the in-person, traditional blackboard lectures. I felt he explained everything well for a tricky class and the weekly homework was never too overwhelming to complete. He provides practice for the exams and as long as you prepare, you'll do well.
I LOVED Tinsley! Attendance was not mandatory but he does give extra credit in clickers if you do go. The in-class lectures are also really good, he's hilarious and they helped me learn, so I recommend going. Very exam/ quiz heavy but gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. He also posts videos and practice problems which are a huge help.
HW is optional, recommend doing to offset poor exam grades. Exams are difficult, averages were always failing. Quizzes are open-note & untimed through eCampus, but you can't go back to questions you've already submitted. Be sure to include units or lose pts. Extra credit offered & he curves at the end. Put in the effort for the best outcome.
The best chem professor! Exams are weighed the most, but he gives all the tools to succeed. It's up to you to use them. He gives non-graded self-assessments and old exams to study. Doing them is what helped me. He is always available if you need help. He gives extra credit. Everything you're tested on is covered in lecture.
I heard a lot of bad things about Tinsley, but after taking him I have 0 complaints. Anytime I went up to him after class and asked a question he would always answer it and be nice about it. The class itself isn't easy but if you just show up to class and take notes you should be fine. I also recommend looking at the old exams before tests.
super fun lecturer & very engaging but moves very fast. HW & weekly quizzes were difficult for me bc the questions were much harder than the ones gone over in class. I flew through 110 with an A and struggled to keep a C in this class simply bc the exams are hard and there are not many other assignments to save failing grades. be ready to work!
The only reason Tinsley's ratings are not at a 5/5 average is because of the difficulty of the course and the speed at which he progresses through the content. He is a phenomenal professor and always explains concepts, albeit quickly, in great detail. He made my CHEM115 course a breeze. If you can get in one of his sections I highly recommend it
Professor Tinsley was amazing for Chem 115. He does his best to keep students engaged and on track. If you stay on top of the material, you should have no problem succeeding in his class. The exam questions are exactly like the homework questions. He also provides at least 3 optional practice exams before each exam. Overall, nothing bad to say.
Professor Tinsley is a great professor. He makes jokes to lighten lectures. Exams are not bad if you study a lot. Exams are similar to homework and the posted old exams from previous years. Do not miss class it is not worth it. Do every extra credit opportunity. He curves final grades at the end. Doable if you put in effort. Free tutoring in CLC!
I loved dr. tinsley. the lectures are alright, but you truly learn by completing all of the practice material. if you do the chosen practice problems before quizzes, you are guaranteed an A on each quiz. this class takes work, but it can be an easy A for someone who is not strong in chemistry, if you simply try. dr. Tinsley is awesome!
Love Mark Tinsley he is a very good professor and is stupid smart which sometimes makes it hard to follow him. There's four exams and a final along with weekly online quizzes (5-8 questions) with two attempts. He uses OLI which is an online FREE textbook, homeworks are within it. He is also very funny and understanding.
I liked professor Tinsley. I struggled in the beginning of the course with the quizzes and homework assignments and emailed him about uploading resources to help with that and he did just that. I ended up doing much better in the course, it just takes a lot of studying. He also did send out a few random extra credit assignments so that helped a lot
Dr. Tinsley does a great job of teaching material that is difficult to understand. I believe that I definitely could have achieved an A- or an A in the class had I reached out to him outside of class or participated in tutoring. This is definitely the kind of class that you get what you put into it. Highly recommend him.
Tinsley is very easy to talk to in class. Make sure you show up to earn participation points. There isn't a ton of assignments but make sure you study them to prepare for exams. Made sure we all knew what was expected of us on exams. About as easy as chem gets, take Tinsley if you can.
Dr Tinsley is an amazing professor. He made a hard and boring subject easy and enjoyable. His lectures were set up perfectly to prepare you for his exams
Best teacher at WVU by far! Had him for both CHEM 115 and 116 and finally understand the concept of chemistry clearly. His exams are simple if you do exactly what he tells you to (self assessments, weekly quizzes, practice exams). Go to office hours!!! He gives very helpful feedback and is very patient with teaching and helping his students.
Prof. Tinsley is not good with technology at all and I thought his lectures were very hard to understand. However, whenever I needed help, he was easy to access during his office hours and via email. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. I learned that the hard way and failed the second exam and most of the weekly quizzes leading up to it.
Talk to this guy for 10 minutes and you realize smart he is, and you understand why he goes so fast in lectures. It can be really hard to keep up with his example problems though because of how fast he goes through them, but he is so nice and funny and genuinely cares about your success. He is always accessible outside of class too.
Professor Tinsley is fantastic teacher of Chemistry. Students complain that his lectures are too old school because he doesn't use technology in class, but if you utilize his office hours, he is more than willing to throughly help you with the content. He is a great person who cares about his students success.
Professor Tinsley is an intelligent, caring human being. He cares about his students success which is exemplified if you visit his office hours. Students complain about him being too old school as he only uses the chalk board during his lecture, but he is more than willing to help you with any confusion you may have with the content material.
He can go fast in lectures but he is always available to answer questions after class or in office hours. Also, he is really nice and so funny. Also, for anyone who has to take CHEM 215 in the future: pay attention in Chem 116 and make sure you get the concepts because 215 is essentially a repeat of Chem 116!!
Prof. Tinsley is tough but fair. His lectures can be tricky, but the weekly quizzes and self-assessments are great prep for exams. Going to office hours is a must - he's super helpful. unstuck study was a lifesaver for extra practice.
Mark Tinsley is the GOAT of WVU chemistry. Final is just like the materials he provided to study with, very honest with what will be on exams, exam questions are from homework. If you want to do well in this course pay attention, do the hws, practice exams, and go to him for help. He is so nice and always willing to help at office hours.
Dr. Tinsley is a great professor. Lectures can be boring at times but as long as you pay attention and do the homework multiple times the exams will be easy. All the exams are very similar to the homework material that they cover and he provides multiple practice exams as well. He is always willing to answer questions during and outside of class
Dr. Tinsley is an amazing chemistry professor! If you are taking CHEM116, take his class. He explains everything well and makes sure to provide enough practice material & homework to help us get great grades on the exams. He's also very nice and funny.
honestly probably the best chem teacher at this school. He is one of few who curves and listens to the students. The class is teat heavy but he is very available for questions, and supportive of students. He has fun and informational lectures.
Tinsley is a great professor. He moves very quickly in class, but if you go to class and pay attention you'll be fine. If you skip, you will fail. Attendence points were recorded, there were no weekly quizzes, and exam pre-tests were just like the exam. He is funny and has a British accent, but you will get used to that.
Very unorganized and all over the place. Hard to follow. Didn't even get a degree in chemistry. Ok if you only need the credit, not good if you need to actually understand the material.
Tinsley is a very kind and funny professor. His class is pretty low maintance with little amount of assignments. However, I just personally didn't resonate with his messy, unorganized style of lecturing. Other people love it, but I didn't. I didn't gain anything from attending lecture, so I felt lost and had to teach myself things before exams.
lectures are concise and helpful, exams are very fair, and gives plenty of practice problems that are all relevant to exam. tinsley is a smart guy and moves quick, but if you are smart and work hard you will be fine. great professor.
This guy is pure comedy and tries to make lectures less boring. The pretests and homework are very similar to the exams which are a big part of your grade. He does upload the notes, but I think it is very important to go to class because the notes don't always make sense without explanation. If you have taken AP chem before, you will breeze through
He is an amazing guy. He explains the material well and tries his best to tell you what will and won't be on exams. He also posts old exams and practice exams, which, though worth no points, are very similar to the actual exam.
He is very funny and knows how to make the class fun. His lectures are easy to follow. He gives a lot of practice for the exams. The homework and exam questions come from the same question bank, so do as many attempts as you can on the HW to get more exposure to the questions. He will also sometimes say if a certain topic with 100% be on the exam.
Tinsley is a genius. His problem is the manner in which he presents information to his students. His explanations are too brief. His lectures are all over the place. There's no plan, he just talks and makes the lesson along the way. For some people, it's fine and it works for them. But for me, I had to teach myself EVERYTHING through the internet
