Van Ells does a good job of relating history to the present. His class can get a little boring, though, and he can be a tough grader. Expect a lot of quizzes. You won't get away w/ not reading the material. Trust me.
i dont like his quizes and his way of grading. but when it comes to lecture he is good, actually excellent
Gives a great lecture but tough on exams
Excellent professor but too many quizzes given. Grading is all based on points you earn throughout the semester. Final is cumulative. He makes lectures as interesting as he can. Would recommend.
The greatest teacheryou'll ever have. Teaches very well.
All right, but not as good as other history teachers I've had. Certainly not bad, though.
Enjoyed taking his class, even though a bit corny on the history jokes. Quizzes definitely helpful. Full lecture course, lots of notes to take if you want to do well but they help. 3Exams, 7Easy quizzes and 1Paper. Sounds like a lot, but easy!
Heres a good professor, knows that hes teaching and the quizzes are really helpful i mean come on mult choice and its like only 10 mult questions
very good professor. teaches history to the class as if its a story. gives the questions to the exam before hand!
Great guy, alot of notes but over all great. I would love to take him again.
Like previously stated, one of the best teachers you'll have.
Nice teacher, very helpful, but tough grader. Still you should take him.
Great professor he will help to understand and enjoy history if you don't already.
very good teacher , a lot of quizzes like 10 questions multiple choice .. papers ..and the exam questions are given to you beforehand . He gives outlines each week of what you will learn . Explains everything very well . Take him .. he is great .
He was an excellent Professor. I absolutely hate History, and he made it interesting and easy for me. I got a B in the class, if I worked harder, an A would have been a no brainer. Take him, easy exams.
he is a very nice he cares about his students very much
very nice guy, explains clearly history, quizzes every week, term project on book or visting a musuem, take him if you like history will def learn many new things from his class
Great teacher! Makes the classes very enjoyable. Easy quizzes if you do any kind of reading, tests are a little harder(essays on them), but again, if you read the chapters you will do fine.
I highly recommend taking a course given by this professor. The way he presents the material is very easy to understand. You'll even get a good laugh from his jokes. I was so impressed with his teaching style that this is my 2nd time taking a class he taught. His jokes might be a bit corny :)
nice guy, if you like history take him, hes easy with exams given to you before the test, and makes history clear with no hard material
Too boring, I fell asleep in class all the time.
I always had trouble in History, but he made this class interesting for me. He is without a doubt my favorite professor I have ever taken. Great guy, great professor. Very helpful.
awesomeawesomeawesome professor! nicest guy, very helpful, easy exams. just pay attention in class and you're set! easy a/a-
Excellent professor. Not hard but a bit challenging. An A is very attainable if you take good notes and read the book. I took him in Spring 2004 and enjoyed a subject I usually loathe.
I LEARNED MORE IN HIS CLASSS THAN I HAVE EVER LEARNED AND HAD A GOOD TIME DOING IT. HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR.
If you take him is the summer you better pay attention and dont miss his class. Just study the handouts and read and you will do fine. Pretty fair grading.
good as a person but difficult to understand his lectures. He speaks too fast and u cant write everything down. Quizes are easy if u study. THERE IS A QUIZ EVERY WEEK. 4 TESTS AND 1 PROJECT. HE ASSIGNS WAY TOO MUCH READING TO DO. LIKE 100 PG PER WEEK.
hes a great professor, just study the terms on his handouts and pay attention in class, he does assign alot of reading but everything thats on tests come directly from his lectures so dont worry if you cant do all the reading. use the book as a reference.
the man is absolutely amazing... really gets u into the material. it's alot of writing, but it's not so bad. if u need to talk 128, and u can handle the writing, TAKE HIM!
has a good personality... kinda boring, tries to be funny, but not a bad guy!! If ur a history buff, then you'll enjoy it... otherwise, u might fall asleep during his lectures!!
He is easy and cool. Could be little more enegetic like Prof. Elias, but he is ok. Really makes people understand history1
He is a great teacher, although speaks very fast. Be prepared to bring a tape recorder. Quizes are from his lectures. You can pass this class w/out even reading a text book. He helped me every time I asked for his help. He can be too funny sometimes. We watched videos every month. Tests are a bit hard, but he will be glad to assist you.
Great professor. He gives weekly quizzes but he also gives weekly handouts which is where he gets the questions for the quiz and exams. If you listen in class, read the chapters and do the weekly handouts (you do not need to hand in), you will get at least an A in the class. He will even reply to every email or questions you send him.
Great Proffesor made history seem very interesting has a great sense of humor and good personality. He is a fair grader and will give you the grade you deserve.
He is the best history professor at QCC in my opinion and one of the best professors in QCC.
This professor is the best! His test are all the same. 5 matching questions and an essay. He gives you the essay topics in advance. You can get easy A in this class, WITHOUT having to read the book.
Van Ells was a great teacher! Very clear and to the point. Explains exactly what he wants and give great notes. As long as you take good notes, you will pass this class!!! Nice and friendly and made the class interesting!!!
Exellent voice, articulation, and use of the english language, and good writer. Extremly hard to please on the essay content. Almost impossible to get an A. Your GPA will definitelly go dow with his class. Good person.
Best professor in qcc. Very Clear, understanding, good notes given, easy tests.... What most that I personally enjoyed from this professor is that he not only knows history well but he could he could pass it down to his students for them to understand it clearly and not confuse them. Definetely a great pick.
he is the best. fun and easy going, the 50 min class will pass faster than a cigarette break
He is really super cool. I'm taking him right now and getting ready for the final. The test are easy. 5 multiple choice and 15 pt essay. You will do fine on the essay if you listen in class. He isn't boring and he jokes around. Did i mention it's an easy writing intensive. GO FOR IT!
Prof. Van Ells is a really good professor. Could not have been any more straight foward with the material and what is expected of you in class.
Professor Van Ells is a wonderful professor that really makes his class intresting and explains the topic clearly. He answers your questions if there are any and is very sociable. The things I like about his class compared to some professors, that you are acutally enticed in what he is saying and doesn't put people to sleep.
great guy..helps everyone...easy tests, easy quizzes, explains everything very well..easy passing grade. take him as a teacher..you'll love it
Absolutely FLAWLESS professor. He is one of the best professors I have ever had in my entire life. If you have never been fond of History before, he will make you love it within the first few weeks. Quizzes and tests are simple. All you have to do is pay attention and take notes well and you'll do great.
Van Ells is amazing! He makes History so much fun and interesting. He truly cares about the students, answers all questions you have. He is crystal clear with History characters and dates. The quizzes are so easy, just go to class and pay attention & you are guaranteed constant A's on the quizzes! He loves his job and shows it with every lecture.
The best professor ever. I will admit that even though Van Ells can be a bit of a chatterbox, he is very organized and informative about history. Quizzes are very easy if you study and take good notes. The best part is that his lecture notes are online, if students need help and he will answer any questions.
I am so excited about having Van Ells again for American History in the fall. I am not much of a fan of American History, but I am pretty sure that he will make the class fun and interesting.
THIS PROFESSOR IS VERY EXCITING. HE KNOWS HIS STUFF & TOO MANY PEOPLE HISTORY MAY BE BORING BUT WITH VAN ELLS ITS A LOT OF FUN. PAPERS AND QUIZZES AS WELL AS TESTS ARE VERY EASY GOING. HAD A GOOD TIME TAKING HIS CLASS.
An amazing professor that has a lot of energy makes history actally pretty enjoyable to learn. Van Ells is very organized and comes prepared, but my only complaint is that he talks a little too fast and writes no notes on the board. This the professor to take for immigration history or american history.
Professor Van Ells is passionate about what he does and that makes him a very good professor. I was in his summer class Hi 128 summer 08.An he made it fun and interesting. If you really listen to his lecture and read the assign text you no doubt will get an A just like i did. Take him he's great. Note to the wise don't take him if you are lazy
Mark Van Ells is one of those rare professor who truely has a passion for teaching history and students become fascinated with his lectures. Exams and papers are rather simple and self explanatory. I really enjoyed this professor and I am glad that I will be having him again for American History.
I will admit that even though it is early in the semester, it is good to have Van Ells once again for history. He makes history fun and exciting without it getting too technical and dry.
I really like this professor who makes history very fun and exciting. The only complaint is that he talks about a bit much which can be a bit distracting. A wonderful professor who is worth taking and learning a whole lot of history.
I really enjoy this class considering how dull American History was in high school, but Van Ells makes the class more tolerable and fun to deal with. The Writing Intensive class involves only 4 papers, a writing assignment, 5 quizzes and 3 exams which is pretty easy. The lectures are very organized and somewhat easy to follow. Highly Recommended.
very hard.
A rather simple and easy professor to understand. However says that this professor is hard must be out of their damn minds. Van Ells has a real passion for History and it show when he conducts the lectures. He is fun to take for a history class and even easy the 2nd time around.
This professor is awesome, because he gives the students more of an appreciation and knowledge for history. I will admit that History was not my thing before, but Van Ells changed my life.
I really enjoyed having Van Ells for history again since he was real passion for what he teaches and it shows. I was really surprised that I got the same grade in this class in Immigration which happened to be an B once again. I found the essays for the exams to be harder, even though the short essays in class to be easier.
I really had a blast having Van Ells for history, since he really loves what he teaches and proves quite effective. However I found the essay exams in American History a bit harder than the ones in Immigration History. Quizzes and papers for the writing intensive class were pretty much to the point. I wish I could take him one more time.
Some people may find Van Ells to be hard, but I actually think that he made me appreciate history even more. He was pretty self explaintory with the quizzes, essays, and papers which was a good thing. I just wish that I would have gotten a higher grade, but that's okay.
One of the better history teachers around. I will admit that Van Ells can be a bit of a chatter box, but I guess that's what happens when a professor loves history. I felt like I walked out of the class learning something. I recommend him to students taking history. He is much better than that dreadful Tai, who can't teach.
Opinions on this professor, depends on who you speak to. Some people may not like him, since he talks a lot and may be boring to others. I felt that Van Ells does have a lot of passion of History. I felt like I learned a lot in his class.
Really cool professor, that loves history and gives students more of appreciation for it. While he is enthusatic, I found it hard to listen to what he had to say at times, since I find it rather diffcult to write notes while a professor lectures. My advice to students taking him is to write whatever he says from the textbook.
Very intelligible professor who know a lot about history. If you like history def. take him.I love going to his class. Most of his quizzes and tests are from the lectures.Don't even bother buy the book. His THE GREATEST HISTORY TEACHER!!!
I will admit that I had a blast in this class and learned a lot. I do think that Van Ells talks a bit too much at times, which sometimes makes it difficult to understand him.
his class is very interesting he is clear bout the material and so passionate about it. he is super fair and overall an easy A if you listen in class. i highly recommend him to anyone he is a great guy.
I really enjoyed taking Van Ells for Immigration History and American History. I loved doing the museum papers for the class which were very interesting to write about. His quizzes were rather easy. The only problem were the exams since they were a little tricky. I also found it difficult to write notes while he was talking. Overall great class.
What I loved about this class, is that Van Ells allows the students to keep track of their grade. quizzes and papers were not that difficult. The tests were a little tricky at times. I love the fact the fact that the prof gets students to appreciate history. I would recommend him for people who are history buffs.
he was NOT as easy as i expected. But he does tally his grades up the way he said he would in the syllabus..get high on quizzes and papers and you should be fine. test were tricky, but i guess its because he wants you to actually study!
He is a great teacher. He is very clear about what he wants and what he is going to do. If you go to every class and take good notes you can not fail this class! You dont even have to open the book! Everything is Easy,Quizzes as well as Test are all from his lectures.
What I found helpful in order to do well in the class, is to copy the information that he talks about in class from the book which is easier to understand what he says. Another tip is to the museum or book review early in the semester, so it is one less thing to worry about. He is actually is a decent teacher, but blabs a bit too much.
He is an excellent teacher!!, i learned a lot. you have to pay a lot of attention to his lectures because his quizzes come straight from there.
A nice man, but rather talkative at times. He did seem really passionate about teaching history which seemed rather obvious despite some of the students feeling bored.
One thing that I did like about taking his class the 2nd time, is that I was able to hand in his museum paper earlier than due date. His papers were rather easy. The only problem is that he tends to talk a lot. The final exam is culumative.
Excellent Proff. At the begining it seem rather annoying that he gives you a 10 question quiz every 2 weeks but at the end this is what really helps you on the big exams, evrything covered on them will show in the tests.... Must take him he is very flexible and helpful
It is true that the quizzes are rather annoying every two weeks, but they are rather helpful since it is a good study guide for the exams. His writing intensive class was rather easy if you had to fufill it for that particular reason. His museum papers are rather easy too since that is a requirement for his class.
funny teacher, makes history fun all you need to do is to listen to his lectures and read the book that's it 8 Quizzes,3 tests and one paper that's it TAKE HIM!!!!
Ended up taking him for Immigration History and American History since he has real passion for what he does. He is funny at times, even though some people think that his jokes are corny. the Museum paper is actually really funny. His writing intensive class is easy. The only problem is that his final is culmutivative.
really cool teacher all you have to do is read the book and you should do fine. easy teacher AND GREAT PERSONALITY!
He does tend to talk a bit fast and can be a little monotone at times. However he is a lot of fun and I like the fact that he allows you to keep track of your own grade. The museum papers are rather easy and gives you a whole bunch of choices to decide from. The quizzes can be a little tricky but are easy.
interesting class not really a fair grader -___-
I loved his class! He covers a ton of info but makes his quizes and exams very reasonable. He gives great lectures, is very easy going and is super helpful with the essay papers.
Took him for both History 125 and History 128 and I thought he was fantastic. liked the fact that he allowed students to write their museum papers early if you had him the 2nd time around. quizzes were a little tricky but multiple choice.
Class simple just attend, review the required vocabulary and chapter.
He is so boring, whatever you do, do not take him for a 3 hour class, if you do brace yourself, never met a professor who can talk as much as he can. Never lets you out early, and a quiz at the end of every class. His tests are annoying, he's not average - gives you 4 multiple choice, 5 short answer, and 10 fill in the blanks but its tough.
I will agree that Van Ells is a bit boring and his jokes can be flat at times but he is knowledge and is a really nice. he isn't too bad for a writing intensive class, since the papers are really short. It is even cool to be able to do a museum paper as well.
One of the greatest teacher in the world. He is so amazing, nice and interesting at all levels! He is so close to you despite his wonderful career... Go to his class, he will check you at the end!
One of my favorite aspects about Mark Van Ells when taking him for Immigration History and American History was the museum papers. He even allowed them to be handed in advance if you had him the 2nd time around. The quizzes were a little tough. His writing intensive course was only 3 papers He lets students keep track of their own grades.
Van Ells is a good professor, especially for american history. If you have the chance, take him for american history. He gives out quizzes daily but they're derived from lecture notes. Van Ells tries to make history as interesting as possible. I even learned some new things from taking his class despite studying american history a lot.
I will admit that one of my favorite parts of the class was doing the museum visits and writing about it. He sure loves his history and tends to have a lot of enthuasism.
I do not know why this professor received good ratings! He is an unfair grader and I strongly feel that he is very judgmental. I am an A student and he is the only prof that ever gave me a C in the class. I strongly believe that I did not deserve a C or even a B but an A.
Van Ells is a great teacher but I do wish that I could have gotten an A in the course but the quizzes were a little tricky and didn't like the idea of a culmitative exam. However the class itself was quite enjoyable.
The best professor I've had so far! Love the way he lectures and his way of explaining.
I WISH EVERY PROFESSOR WAS LIKE HIM. He's extremely helpful, his lectures aren't boring and yes you need to read the textbook but again his lectures cover a lot. He's funny and I don't fall asleep. His test/quizzes are simple, as long as you know your stuff. NO H.W(except reading a few assigned novels) BUT gives like 1 essay project. Great overall.
He is so nice. Always willing to help you if you need the help. His quizzes are easy if you scan through the book and read the notes. His exams are easy, he gives you a review and that review sheet helps a lot. For the first time EVER I love history.
Great class, great professor. Knows what he is talking about and answer any question at any time. Go ahead take it but something that people should know is that if you want that A you have to work for it
Got my bachelors in '06. Needed this as prereq to enter grad school for career change. Was nervous having been out of the flow of school for so long. Class was ideal. Gives weekly quizzes based on lectures. Take good notes, its no problem. Review sheets for 2 exams (midterm/final). Museum paper=easy grade boost. Light workload. Got an A. Funny guy.
THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy... I dreaded his class every single day. He has the most dreadful voice, even when he cracks jokes. I couldn't help myself from falling asleep everyday. ANYWAYS.. he gives a quiz everyday to help boost your grade along with an easy museum paper. His lectures are pointless, just read the book. I got a D+ but in my eyes.. that's an B!!
He was a very good professor with dry humor. If your cellphone goes off he will start dancing. Grading is weird and his museum paper was stupid Grading is based by point wise. Each quiz is worth 10 points so You have to get 30 points in Quizzes alone, 30 on your Midterm, 30 on Final and 10 on your final Paper. EASY A If you put in EFFORT! & STUDY!
i recommend this professor, he is clear, funny. easy A if you study and do what he ask you like museum papers. i think the purpose of college is to learn not go there and sleep for the entire class and then complaint about your grade, some people are very immature in college. take good notes for quizzes.
Awesome dude. Pretty fair on grading. It's based on adding up points so it's not very hard to pass. His lectures are super clear and his tests are fairly easy. Some quizzes can throw a curveball at you though, so make sure to make decent notes on things he emphasizes.
I encourage you to take this professor. He makes Histroy such a fun and interesting subject. Just sit in front, participate and pay attention. He's grading is very transparent. Review your notes and you'll do fine.
Easy-going and approachable. I enjoyed his class, his lectures were entertaining and he really tries to make history interesting for all.
Took him for the summer session. Attend his class, take notes (he will let you record it) and memorize. There was 6 MC quizzes(1 dropped), 3 map quizzes (1 dropped), a museum paper (easy) a midterm (essay and fill in), and a final (essay and fill in). Only focused on his lecture and still got an A. He will give a review sheet for the essay topic.
VERY GOOD PROFESSOR! THIS IS THE THIRDDDDD TIME I TAKE HISTORY AND I FINALLYYY PASSED. IT WAS A SUMMER COURSE SO OBVIOUSLY IT WAS CONSISTENT SO IT WAS EASIER TO REMEMBER THE MATERIAL...BUT HE IS NICE, FUNNY, AND CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS! EASY EXAMS. FILL IN THE BLANKS AND AN ESSAY,
His class was a little boring, but to be fair he was teaching history that most of us already knew. A lot of pop quizzes, and he's a little tough on the grading. He gives an extra credit museum paper that's easy to do, and I was surprised that he remembered our names when we had such a huge class. Overall, not the best His professor, but he's okay.
Excellent professor. Professional and extremely knowledgeable. His lectures were interesting and informative and he's a fair grader. He's quite funny too. Tests are all based on his lectures and power point, so paying attention and good note taking are key to passing his class. Quizzes about once a week, but they were very helpful. Great overall!
Professor Mark Van Ells is amazing. His lectures are clear and he makes learning fun, as he's very enthusiastic in what he's teaching. Hi gives three exams, one museum review, and quizzes which can be a little overwhelming, as he gives them almost every week. You definitely need to buy his textbook since most of his quiz questions are from there.
Professor Van ells is an excellent professor. His lectures are very clear. I found his quizzes and test to be a little challenging; but as long as you pay attention to his lecture and take good notes you should be okay. He is always willing to help you if you have any questions. I would recommend this class to a friend.
Some questions, which are very basic, are about the novels assigned. Assigns quizzes. Great Professor!
I think he is a ok professor. I unfortunately did not pass and I took him again because he is the only one available for summer school this summer. My advice attendance is important. Use the outline on black board as a guide to help you study. Use any older quizzes to help you study for the final. The musuem review is the only thing that is easy.
Took him for the summer course, there were 6 multiple choice quizes and 4 map quizes, and he drops the 2 lowest grades. He is great at keeping the material interesting, really a great teacher. And like most professors its pretty simple; show up to class, take notes and study, and you will do just fine. Definitely recommend!
he is a great professor.
If my highschool history teacher was this great, I would have never thought history was boring! He does require light reading and his lectures are amazing. I got an A in his class and rarely cracked the textbook. He uses powerpoints and talks more than he writes, so listen! As long as you have questions he has thorough answers. Take him!
He is a very good Professor who gives amazing lectures about history. Study Study Study. he's pretty great. No he does NOT give extra credit, but he's still a great Professor.
Great Professor. Learned a lot of history by taking his course.
Very good teacher and very funny.
This professor wasn't that bad. I've had worst experiences. He is really funny and tries his best to keep the lecture interesting. You have to take good notes, study your past quizzes to do good on tests. He is very attentive to questions that you have and makes time for students. Do the museum review! It's an easy way to boost up your grade.
Professor Van Ells makes the class very interesting with his stories, including his time in the Air Force. He really knows his history. Pay attention, study, show up and you will get an A
his class wasnt THAT bad but lots of note taking. i always recorded his lectures bc he does ALOT of talking along with powerpoints. the recording really helped a lot. The only thing i didnt like were his quizzes. you really need to remember specifics like date, name, and time. even for his tests, you need to remember the little details.
Straight forward grader. Professor is very knowledgeable. He definitely knows his stuff. overall good professor!
Prof. Van Ells is one of the best. He is able to inspire his students and his love for history really shows in each of his lectures. Attendance is very important, cause the lectures are of pretty decent substance, but they are very, very interesting. I suggest you record them 'cause he expects detailed answers on quizzes.
great professor i recommend him!
I took him years ago and he was awesome. Very passionate and his enthusiasm helps you want to learn. He is very lecture heavy, but it's bearable. He's very clear and will explain into further detail if you don't understand something.
By far one of the best professors at QCC. He is very dedicated, and actually cares, its unlikely you'll find a professor like this. Grades you, only based off 6 quizzes (3 book quizzes), a midterm, a final, and an easy essay. GREAT AND FUNNY MAN!
OMG I love him! He's really sweet and his quizzes and the midterm was super easy... that is, if you show up to class and study. To pass his class, I recommend flashcards of all the key terms and key people that he gives you on the chapter summaries. He also doesn't make you fall asleep in class because he'll go on a few tangents.
Take him!!
Amazing professor! His lectures are long but very clear and concise! Take him!
He's a really nice and funny professor! He gives 1 quiz per week sometimes per 2 weeks but the quizzes are very easy and for the test, you have to fill in the blanks and write a paragraph. The only thing is you HAVE to take notes, he doesn't write much on the board, you will have to listen. Textbook is free online BTW
these bottom two reviews are bad-the class it too big for him not to "like you". the tests are like every history dept test, 3 blue book essays with the topic given to you prior, you can legit write your essay at home and rewrite it during the test, thats pretty easy. you take 8 multiple choice quizzes- he only 6 count. Just take good notes and win
You can tell that he enjoys what he teaches. He's been to some places he mentions in class and tells you what it looks like today. He doesn't write on the board but you can easily follow along and take notes. If you have questions, he gladly answers. His jokes are corny but you still manage to laugh. I definitely recommend and I'm not into history.
I've had Prof. Mark for US history and even though it's a history class he's is not boring at all. There is a quiz for almost every week and its based on the last lecture. His exams are essay and he gives you the topic so u can prepare. He's really a simple and easy professor and he always trying to help you grade better. His textbook is online.
Great professor that I have ever met such a liberal and a great teacher however his quizzes were hard to pass even the exams were tough though at least he taught me a lesson of things of how people came to the USA from different countries
He is very very dedicated to the subject and always explains in depth of the topics. His quizzes are very specific so be sure to study constantly. He likes to show his pictures of his travels in Europe. Overall best history teacher Ive ever had
Professor Ellis is really funny and a great professor, he does give a lot of quizzes but drops the lowest 2 grades and are relatively easy if you just take notes, attendance is important. Textbook is free. Would take again. He's just very specific with his essay finals so take decent notes. easy grade if you pay attention
What an AMAZING Professor. His lectures are very informative and organized. He makes sure to notify when there are quizzes, test or any changes. There were good amount of quizzes but he makes sure to give a quick review before it and does not put anything he didn't teach. Paying attention will benefit you. Plus, his lectures are not boring. GREAT!
He talk. ALOT. he does not know when to stop talking. His quizzes are fairly easy as long as you pay attention. I got As on everything but maybe its cuz I remembered most from high school. The materiel is very basic. If you took the regent and did fine on it youll do fine in his class as well
He is an amazing lecturer. His classes were 3 hours long and I never felt bored.
I don't like history much to be honest, but prof Ells is a hilarious, passionate, and smart professor that I actually enjoyed learning history. His grading is very clear. No homework at all. 8 quizzes and 3 exams in total. He drops 2 quizzes. He tells students what's going to be on the test. You will pass if you go to class and listens his lectures
HE is an awesome professor, his lectures are easy to understand however HE IS VERY TOUGH AT GRADING HIS TESTS AND EXTRA CREDIT !!!
Professor Van Ells is an amazing professor. He is very good at explaining information in a easy, thoroughly manner. I got a C in his class only because History is my weakest subject. However, his class is hard to fail. I would definitely recommend him.
Prof Mark van ells, is an amazing teacher! this class was simple and clear. in this class we have 8 quizzes (very simple, and you get to throw out 2 of your worst grades and keep the other 6), we also had 2 exams, 1 final & museum paper. if you do the work and study, you'll be fine.
He is a very good professor. I dont really like history but he made history fun to learn. He is straightforward with the work that has to been done through the semester. His lecture are never boring. I highly recommended this professor.
He was honestly the best history professor i've ever had. He really cares if you make an effort in his class. Grading is super straight forward, no surprises. One of the best professors at qcc hands down!
Professor Van Ells is very nice and understanding if you need any help hes always eager to help his students the lectures are very heavy I would write 4 pages of notes for each class.. he gives 2 tests a final a museum paper and 8 quizzes and drops the lowest two.. hes really nice but its a lot of work
He is such a tough grader. Ive taken hard science courses in qcc and this is the only professor who gave me an F even when I tried. Do not take him.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Tough grader. Boring lectures. Absolutely terrible DO NOT TAKE HIM unless youre setting yourself up for failure.
Dont take him. Hes a tough grader and boring
He's a nice person!BUT he's very tough and strict when it comes to grading exams. If you take his class... get ready to take A LOT of notes(He doesn't write on the board). This class is not mandatory for my major and I really regret taking his class. Very unfair by the way he's grading and the review sheet for the exam are useless!
A solid professor tbh don't understand the recent bad reviews, if you pay attention to his lectures, jot down the notes you'll do great! Yes, his lectures are long, mine was 3hrs but I enjoyed his class. He could care less about attendance. 10 question quiz every week about last weeks lecture, I just reviewed the night before quickly.
I'm crying as I'm writing this message. Please stay away from this guy. He is the worst grader ever. He will NEVER give you extra credit, but will take away so many points from you in one shot. This guy is mean. My GPA is 3.8 and Im graduating this semester. Van Ells is heartless. He won't tolerate a thing, You won't get a good grade. Stay Away
Make sure to study the keys terms he gives for quizzes and open book exams to add on to your essays. He gives 3 options of questions to choose from for the book exam. As longest you study the key terms study guide through lectures and textbook then you will be fine. He is easy to understand. Textbooks was free too so thats a plus.
don't take him. a lot of reading. a quiz ever week. midterm and final very hard. 4 papers about long movies. very hard grader each point is counted.
He is a great and understanding professor, there is not many like him. Just make sure to study the study guides he gives its not just the definition of the word but also know the cause or affect for example. He always did office hours I understood his lectures, he does give quiz every week. work hard for your grade. Also your papers as well!
Hist 133 is a writing intensive course so do expect to do pages that he requires, its based on historic event videos he assigns. He does give a quiz every week you can use the textbook but for more help he also gives office hours lectures that he records for students to watch, makes it 10 times easier to understand.
Professor Van Ells is a great U.S. History professor. He is extremely attentive to his students during class, is easily reachable via Outlook and ensures that everybody who does not understand the content will be able to by the time we have a quiz or exam. Anybody who wants or needs to take U.S. History Part II should go to this professor.
With the way online classes work now, pay special attention on quizzes as they are being averaged in the same way as the writing projects (papers). Quizzes are very short so each of them will make/break you but do note: they are NOT hard as long as you pay attention in the lecture. Everything in the quizzes and midterm/final were all in his lecture
A great professor who really knowns his stuff. His lectures are very informative and helpful. Make sure to study for the quizzes and do the papers. Overall, one of the best history teachers I've ever had!
Professor Van Ells is great! his lectures are informative and extremely easy to understand. He gives a quiz everyday but its all the information he taught in class theres no "surprise". He tells you what he requires from you at the beginning of the semester and is really helpful. I would recommend him 100%
the worst professor ive ever had hes literally terrible . would not recommend.
Professor Ells is a great guy. Study for his weekly quizzes, use the information he gives you, and pay close attention to the films he provides. Follow this and you should end up with a pretty decent grade!
He is a grate professor, recommended!
This is the second time I've taken Professor Van Ells, he is a great professor. Very prompt in regard to providing SSD accommodations on quizzes and exams. He will go out of his way to ensure the class has no problems with the week's content and provides valuable feedback on papers. Is a safe bet if you want/need to take a history course.
Awesome professor. straight forward. the only graded things he has is his weekend 10 question quizzes on blackboard. which is the same throughout all his classes he teaches regardless of course. His exams are just an essay super easy A if you can write a few pages and read the textbook. His quizzes are super easy if you just Pay attention.
Makes lectures bearable as he's actually pretty funny, homework is super easy. Take notes in class and you're good to go. Tests aren't too bad either. Super recommended.
Prof Ells is awesome.Easy A. you will learn a lot. Best teacher at QCC. You literally have to be a potato to not make an A.
he leaves you with PowerPoints to study from with no information about what's on the PowerPoints so you'll be doing a lot of googling and most likely studying the wrong thing. boring 3 hour lectures
I took him during the spring 2023 term. He never lectured because the course was asynchronous, but I liked the class. He was very straightforward and to the point in his replies to my emails and resolved technical issues ASAP. All quizzes were online and open-book, and there are two 5-page papers you have to do. That is it.
He is a very good professor. His work is clear to understand. The midterm is 1 essay(choose from 5 options) and 10 multiple choice questions. Read and comprehend the key terms for each chapter & you'll be fine. Had to drop this course since I was misadvised and didn't need it, but definitely recommending him as a American hist instructor
Lecture heavy. The assignments are straight forward its just a quiz for every topic he finishes. two paper not a harsh grader. SHOULD STUDY FOR MIDTERM AND FINAL. but after that you should be able to get a good grade.
The midterm was hard.
I took this cls in summer. His lectures are clear but long,& you must take good notes 4 d qzes. Papers are easy, but the midterm & final are very hard, timed 2hr essays with no pre-given prompts & required evidence. He replies quickly & is fair but very strict. I worked really hard for my B+,& the same effort might've been an A with diff professor.
Nice but He is a tough grader, Out of all my classes, This professor gave me a C+ while all my Major classes are B+. Even Math which I consider my hardest class got me B-. I am going for Nursing and this pulled my GPA so bad that I am no longer sure how I can pull my gpa back up to get into the program.
