tough course
It's hard to rate this guy. The course isn't all that difficult, but it does require tons of work. Lots for only 3 units! Mark is good on emails. I think he really tries to help. The biggest problem is that he has poor people skills.
Everything on the test is in the reading. If you do the reading you should be fine. A minus is that he doesn't seem to care about individual students.
Hot stuff!I had a great experience with him.. tries to make the classes interesting and fun..Don't remember much of the course anyways ... after all GE!
Not the easiest class to take. Seems to pay more attention towards the 'hotter' girls in class. Doesn't seem too interested in teaching, but rather developing his own ideas. If you don't understand something, he treats you like you're dumb.
Really arrogant and uncaring. I agree with comment below that he favors "hot girls" (i.e., bleach blondes). Avoid at all costs!
Good person, great outside of class, horrible professor. Anal and stringent. Strenuous course. Be sure you do all of the reading, as things will be on the exam that he won't mention in class.
This class is somewhat hard. There's A LOT of homeworks that takes up A LOT of time. His tests are a bit difficult. Make sure to read the book thoroughly! He oftens comes to class only to leave again to make copies of handouts. He is very helpful, though
Mark is VERY smart and it shows. The class is difficult but it feels good to actually learn something that has real world application. Yeah, you have to read and be in class to pass. Oh btw he has copies of previous tests for review. So I HIGHLY recommend use the his website from the beginning.
HE IS NOT THAT GREAT OF A PROFESSOR. HE HAS A HARD TIME EXPLANING THINGS IN DIFFERENT WAYS. TRIES TO JOKE A LOT IN CLASS BUT IS NEVER FUNNY. NOT THAT HELPFUL WHEN IT COMES TO OFFICE TALKS EITHER.
If you go to class and take notes, you'll get an A. He will work with you outside of class and is very helpful. Very clear lectures, but he does like the females more than the males
moderate difficulty.go to class, take notes, read bk; some of exam isnt listed on study guide. grades on exams,labs,poster-not too hard.u can redo labs,so concentrate on studyin for exams.responds quickest to emails. the text and his lectures are easy to understand; material is just boring. 3.8/5
He is very cute. But the class is a bit hard. Tests are based on the book. If you go over the book really well, you should at least get a C. He isn't that hard of a grader when it comes down to it. You might get a better final grade than you expected.
worth transferring to the psych dept for this one....but then again i'm a true blonde. the class is somewhat difficult but not unfairly so considering this is college & not high school. he will help you, he does care about the students who are trying and are interested.

I don't know why everyone is complaining. Half my class was never there so thats probably why they all barely passed. Pros: Very upbeat and excited about topic. Cons: Essays and Tests are due the same day =( I got an A+ so he can't be as bad as people say!

you actuallly learn in this class. Tests are based one lectures and study guide practice tests. Make sure u use the practice tests and lecture notes on his website, becuz 75 percent of his test questions are from the website. Pretty easy class i waited till the last minute to do things and still got an A
very smart and very hot, but a little snooty. i went to him for advising and he winced when i said i was going into nursing. cognition wasnt hard at all, had it for winter session. easy A. just do the work and pay attention to lecture; he is very thorough. he should work on his people skills a little though.
Spoke to him quite a few times outside of class. Definitely a smart guy and charming too. Young, pretty gals should be careful with this one. BUT, if you're the type to flirt/date your professor then you'll be very happy getting to know him.

Easy A. He's very thorough. All you have to do is the hwk and listen!!! keyword listen to his lectures and you'll do fine. Might have to go through the book to do the hwk. Go to his website for practice tests.
The class is pretty interesting & it's not difficult if you actually do the work. He's always in his office & willing to help. ^_^
Good instructor but favors the ladies. I took the class over the summer so it might differ from regular session. There are a couple tests with multiple choice and short answer questions. There were also a few article summaries on experiments etc as homework. Attending lecture is very helpful.
He's very... quick about getting through stuff. Emails, phone calls, visits. But he's a very fun teacher and a good advisor.
class wasinteresting, but he seems to jump around a lot, so lectures are hard to follow, don't really need to attend class to do well, everything straight from the book
do not take him, take the other guy. tests are hard and his lectures are all over the place. does favor the ladies...too bad.
Made the student more interested in the subject with his enthusiasm.

He really cares about his students. He really wants to see his students succeed. Super smart guy. All you have to do is write a 2 page article critique every week and present a chapter in the book every other week.
He is one of the most helpful teachers. He really goes out of his way to help his students..! Hats off to him!
He definately makes the more difficult concepts easier to grasp. He has a way of lecturing that works well that way. The class was more than a little disorganized, but the topics were good. They really covered a wide range of important topics that couldn't be covered in 120. The experiment really helps you get an idea of what research really is.

Terrible, rambles on but doesnt really answer questions clear. He is a Psych teacher who teaches STATS! Doesnt know much at all about stats unless he has his "cheat sheet" and is almost never there.
HARD CLASS!! I took it winter session and it was not what I expected. He wasnt there half the time and had guest teachers. He jumped all over with his lectures and never followed the notes he provided. Nice guy but this class did not go well. I got an A, but it was hard. Maybe regular session is better...
I don't know what he's talking about most of the time...
OK teacher. I wouldn't take him again. He kind of gives me the creeps.
Flat out...this guy is a horrible teacher. I took him for Stat 95 and I will never take him for anything else. He has a concept of what he is teaching but can't relay anything clearly to the class. Plus he takes several days off of teaching and he's late alot. The tests were hard for me b/c I literally taught myself all the material. DONT TAKE HIM!
difficult course. clear and very helpful (when not travelling). good info about psyc.
very smart guy who goes out of his way to help his students. overall, i enjoyed the class. you have to do about 10 presentations, plus 4 pages of writing each week, and a meta-analysis semester project. don't get too intimidated because mark makes the journey as easy as possible if you take advantage of his office hours.
He is a good professor, he helped me alot with his class.
Dr. Van Selst is very nice and helpful, but many assignments were required in this class. About 18 2-page papers, 8 presentations, and a final 10/20-page partial meta analysis project were required. He also assigned two small books for this class. Although the workload was heavy, he can be very helpful during his office hour.
This pretty much sums Dr. Van Selst up: High expectations, low level of guidance (unless you plan to be in his office every day), and when you do ask for help, it normally makes you more confused than before asking. He oftentimes goes on tangents, and assumes that people understand what he's talking about. That was my experience with him.
Be prepared to put some effort in this class, you won't get through it by simply sitting there. The lectures are important, his tests/quizzes are all based mostly from the lectures. If you got any questions about psychology, he's the one to ask. He's one of the adviser for psyc.
This is not an easy class and he's not an easy professor ! I took psych 1 over the winter so it was tough ! Better do your assignments and quizzes . Some questions from the assignment show up in the quiz and midterm .
Felt that Mark genuinely wants his students to learn,so don't take him unless you are willing to work hard and keep up with the many written assignments. I quietly complained to myself about how tough the class was to keep up with, but in the end I was relieved to have had such an intelligent professor teach me about Cognition.
This class isn't really centered on anything other than busy work, which really bothers me. He doesn't really teach, he just assigns us a ton of paper and presentations to do. When he does talk, it's always a tangent about nothing. There is no learning in this class, which is really disappointing. It's just busy work.
Mark Van Selst... Definitely not my favorite teacher. I would not take his class again. He grades really hard. If you ask him for help outside of class, he will just confuse you more. He shows a lot of preference to girls... Some say that he creeps them out. Avoid at all costs.
Mark is a creep. The class is all busy work and no guidance. His grading doesn't make sense. He isn't prepared for his class. He's a terrible professor.
Holy mackerel, avoid winter session. Daily quizzes and homework (some with drawing involved... like diagrams, not just writing, which was annoying), a few full tests, online participation in psych. studies, and a couple short presentations, in two weeks! I was very sleep deprived. Also kind of annoyed me as a person, seemed pretentious.
Not a very good professor. He seems to be more interested in sounding smart, when he's really not saying anything helpful. My advice is to find a professor who isn't so arrogant.
I loved this class but it was tough since I did not keep up with the readings (the book is very boring). He helps a lot and is very enthusiastic about the class. He does all that he can to help you succeed. I would take it again, but I would try harder.
He's my first professor of the day and boy, is he boring. All he does is lecture and talk out of his ass about things that are so irrelevant to the topic of what we're suppose to learn. He is also EXTREMELY pretentious. Probably will mention he is a cognitive psychologist twice per class. Also tries to be funny but just makes DAD jokes. lol
This guy is a super tough grader! Be prepared to study your butt off for the tests. They are worth much of your grade, and often contain questions about material that you don't cover in class. Even after several nights of studying, I still felt sucker punched at every single one. Don't take this class if you are NOT a psych major. God Speed!
gives a very good idea of the fundamentals of human mind. puts a lot of emphasis on research: assignment papers, in his tests and lectures are based on research. advice for future students: make sure to practice before exams (practice exams are provided) and study of his Power Points.
Lectures are unclear, I'm never really able to grasp the true concept of what he's lecturing about, It helps to read up on the material before the lecture though. Normal amount of homework, usually gives a quiz when the homework is due. The tests can be difficult and pretty much make no sense to you if you don't study the practice quizzes and tests
Extremely hard class. The exams are only 10-20 essay questions, so you will need to come to class and read the book to pass. He is a good lecturer, although, so take good notes and pay attention. More importantly, while taking the exams never leave questions blank. He gives points for trying or even gives full points if you get the gist of it.
Horrible lectures, very unclear. He always came unprepared and made up lectures as he went. I had to read the entire textbook to pass and I didn't need most of that information. I stopped showing up in to last few weeks of class because i realized it was pointless.
Honestly, I'm half way through the semester and I'm in danger if failing. His tests are ridiculously hard, lectures are pointless and a waste of time as he posts lecture slides all online. Class is out of 100 points and hardly any room for error. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER OPTION!!!!!!!
Avoid him at all costs! The tests are the most difficult I've taken in my college career. Van Selst doesn't care whether you pass or not so don't expect him to be understanding of unique circumstances. Neither helpful nor well liked.
Dont take him if you have another option. Most of my class is currently in danger of failing because his tests are so hard and there is no other way to make points.
He is knowledgeable about psychology but makes his Intro to Psyc class very difficult. He posts his powerpoints online but they are very vague, you MUST buy the textbook and READ it or else you will fail. There is at least 2 hw assignments per chapter and a quiz when hw is due. Also there are 4 midterms and a huge final exam. Good luck people.
BEWARE. Only take this class if its the only option you have. Spent so many hours studying and doing assignments and finished with a C minus. My worst class of my college career.
Not a good teacher at all. Very pretentious. Just because you wrote a small part of the textbook doesn't make you a good teacher! I recommend finding another professor for this course.
Worst Professor and Advisor in this University!! Would NOT recommend students to take this professor for this course. Does not care about students.
Mark was an ok professor. he made a lot of jokes in class but his lectures are not very organized. He assigns lots of homework/papers, 4 midterms, and a final. However, he does post-practice midterms on Canvas and many of the questions will appear on the midterms. I had to spend so many hours reading and studying and it was only an INTRO class.
We did one major project the whole semester which made it very easy. Easy to follow instructions. During lectures if you ask to explain better he will make sure you get it before moving on. The tests are literally almost exactly the same as the study guides. Never leave anything blank on the exams. He will give credit for just trying
I took this class during winter session and so we had a mini paper due every night but they were reasonable assignments imo. Its a test heavy class but he puts a couple of extra questions as bonus points. Try every question and give him anything you know! I got 13/12, 20.08/20, 12.17/14, and 15.5/14 on his tests and finished the class with 100.6%
I was hesitant to take this professor, at first, because of what I read on here. BUT I personally found him to be a great lecturer who's very knowledgable on the class topic. The tests are hard and you have to write a lot of papers, but if you actually do the work and study, you'll pass. He cares about his students if they show effort.
Good god this man talks fast! I really loved this class for the material, but he's hard to follow because he talks a mile a minute. His presentation materials are heavy on the wordy slides, which he whips through. Meeting with him 1 on 1 he's a little odd, doesn't look you in the eye, seems like his attention is always elsewhere.
Took during summer, speaks very fast i cannot understand. Test are short 15 to 20 questions but you have to write out all the answers lots of memorization. one whol e paper 5 week course 3 exams and 1 paper. he looks like he is tough he is actually really accessiable just talks fast and makes you work for your gade.
This guy has no idea what he's doing. We were the first section ever to be taught online due to COVID, and he was totally disorganized. Half of his test and assignment questions made no sense, and he didn't even attempt to correct his complete incompetency by curving. Most of the class was confused and failing. STAY AWAY!!!
Class is only worth 100 points if not less. Lecture heavy, make sure to pay attention and read the book. Class average grade was a 70%. No big final paper. 4 tests not more than 20 points each. Good Luck..... Don't take him if you don't have to
Honestly, Van Selst is a cool guy but a very bad professor. His lectures contain him talking a mile a minute while showing power point slides that have literal paragraphs (yes that's plural) on them. His exams are stupidly hard and he makes you do waaaaaaaay too many article analyses.
This is NOT an easy class and Van Selst makes the course more difficult to understand than it already is. Lecture content does not help you with the exams and the exam questions make no sense. He says he purposefully makes the exam questions difficult to "google proof" them but the wording makes it hard to understand what he is asking.
His tests are some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. I took this class during covid, but even if you have the internet at your disposal, you won't find his test answers online, trust me. There's also a lot of homework assignments which are all papers you'll need to write. Review the slides before his exams (no study guides given).
You can obviously see that he cares. The tests are so google proofed that the wording is really hard to understand for tests and sometimes are misleading. You get assignments everyday, but are straightforward for 30 minutes max each assignment. He sometimes gives an extra point on tests that you have to work to get back by explain correct answer.
Unwilling to cooperate & be flexible even though the entire class is confused and falling behind. Doesn't provide any clear instructions for any assignments and expects you to read his mind for what he wants. Is completely happy with students having a C average & nothing better. Poor class structure and incomprehensible midterms on untaught topics.
I took this class over the summer and it felt like he was winging the whole class. The lectures are heavy. There are only 12-20 questions on exams and the wording is very confusing because he doesnt want the questions to be 'google-able'. Everything is worth very few points. He taught important material AFTER doing the individual project.
You will try extremely hard in this class and have nothing to show for it. Hard implies that there is logical difficulty in his class, but there is not; he provides no detailed instructions for assignments. He aims for a class average of 78% and will cripple your grade to hit that average. You will pass with a wrecked GPA. Nice guy though.
This was the most difficult class I have taken. There were over 20 assignments/exams and only 100 total points in the class. His exam questions were worded in confusing ways. The instructions for his assignments were not clear and he often elaborated on them after we had begun them. Very time heavy.
He is so disorganized in his teaching and grading. I would NOT recommend taking him, there was never a rubric in sight and his grading was very variable. He would take off .5 .2 .15 off points with no explanations, his instructions were never clear, feedback was given too late, nitpicky even tho he didnt express what he truly wanted. 0/10 Just dont
DON'T TAKE HIM! he is rude and lazy. He expects you to read his mind and gets upset even though he didn't explain what he wants. No patience at all.he was also my academic advisor and I feel like academic advisors should be supporting and hear you out but he rushed the whole process, and made me feel stupid. fire him pls SJSU.
Awesome professor
I found this class to be extremely difficult. Alot of assignments due on the same day, constantly changing due dates, no guidance, moves way too fast, some quizzes were due before learning the material, he likes to go off topic a lot. He is very open to meeting with students outside of class to discuss anything pertaining to the class.
A very lazy professor and unable to properly write an email. He gives horrible feedback on assignments which is usually just one to two words and kind of condescending. His tests are entirely made up and have nothing to do with his lectures. Even though he insists on lecturing for a full 2 hours with no breaks. This is my first review, be warned!
There were many assignments due at the end of every week. He rambles a little this causes us to get behind and rush the last few chapters.
Very easy to get a good grade if you do all assignments. The only thing: he rambles A LOT. He goes on tangents for half the class often. He kept pushing back assignments because we did not get through enough in class and at the end of the sem, we had like 5 assignments due the same week. He is a very helpful prof though. Should go to every class
His class is very very assignment heavy and most of the time you'll be doing tons of work for 1 point and ALOT of the time he would change the due date to a random hour like there's the typical due at midnight assignment then there's some that's due at 6PM or 9PM for no reason. Avoid him unless he's your last resort to get your requirement
- Grading is very heavy, every 0.1 impacts grade. - Confusing examples, a lot of rambling. - Unclear instructions. but - Nice - Is accessible through email - Large availability range to complete late assignments for full points - Good feedback I still wouldn't recommend though... save yourself. The reviews are TRUE.
