Very nice professor, encourages you to visit office hours. Had five papers in total, attendance was mandatory because of the pop quizzes, and had a lot of reading that was unnecessary, could get the same info with a google search and read a paragraph (cases).Lectures were reading off slides, very boring.
Verbitsky is a great professor and the class is very informative and engaging. There is a ton of reading, mostly all Supreme Court cases, but incredibly interesting to read. Reading is required, because there are pop quizzes in the beginning of class. There are 3 essays, all of which are fun to write. I will be taking this professor again.
Professor Verbitsky is my favorite professor at Davis. He is smart, helpful, clear, facilitates lively class discussions, and has a wry sense of humor. He does have pop quizzes, which requires you stay on top of your reading, but it helped me be a better student. He is very accessible online and in person. I am smarter because of his class.
Professor Verbitsky is a very knowledgeable and does his best to make his lectures fun and interesting. He clearly cares about all of his students as he makes an effort to learn everyone's name and makes himself available after class to help or go over course materials. He is young, enthusiastic and a talented teacher. Beware of quizzes!
My favorite professor taken here so far at UC Davis. He has a great personality and asks very thought provoking questions, truly demanding you to think about the constitutional issues and applying them to real world debates. His assignments were all connected to a specific issue and the class itself was incredibly interesting.
Professor Verbitsky is probably one of the most challenging, thought-provoking, and highly engaging professors I've ever taken at UC Davis. As someone who is new to studying the Constitution, I found the course to be both rigorous and well developed. Take the class and you will leave with so much more than just a grade.
Professor Verbitsky is probably the best professor I have ever had. I took two consecutive courses with him, POL 151 and 150, and they were both amazing, thought provoking, engaging, and wonderful. He is extremely knowledgeable and funny. Take his class!! If you engage and do the readings, you will get a good grade.
I personally did not like Verbitsky's style at all. He's not clear in what he wants, and you find yourself scrambling to understand what you're meant to do with no affective clarification from him. The reading is too much, the quizzes are too much, the amount of busy work & whole teaching style is just ridiculous if you're taking other classes.
He is a must take professor. Extremely funny and makes you think during lectures. You have to read quite a bit but in the end they help you think deeper into the Constitution. His essays are straight forward and usually is a fair grader. In the end he wants the best for his students and will help you if you need it.
My favorite professor at UC Davis so far. He is a young, talented professor who knows how to keep the class engaged by creating lively discussions. Very friendly and accessible, and he keeps the class atmosphere light. Grade consists of 4 papers, 3 quizzes, and attendance. I will definitely be taking more of his classes in the future.
I've taken four of his classes GREAT professor! Very engaging lectures and although there is a lot of reading he gives you an outline as to what pages to read/focus on, and what topics/concepts to look for in the readings. He also gives clear study guides and grading rubrics so you know what he's asking about and looking for in papers and tests.
He is amazing! I took Constitutional Politics with him and he really tries to engage with the students. He remembers your name if you go to his office hours and is constantly seeking out the feedback from students. Although his class is not easy you learn a lot if you are interested in the subject. Overall great class!
Really engaging! Funny and puts in a lot of effort. He remembers names and definitely cares. I've learned a lot! But yeah it's like your standard poli sci class: don't skip readings and be prepared to work!
WORK IS EXTREMELY TEDIOUS. YOU HAVE TO ANSWER THE SAME QUESTIONS FOR EVERY MAJOR CONCEPT. YOU HAVE TO TAKE SIDES WITH POLITICAL FIGURES AND ARGUE WHY YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH THEM, EVEN THOUGH YOU JUST LEARNED ABOUT THEM. OVERALL, DON'T TAKE IF YOU DON'T LIKE READING NOR WRITING ON WHAT YOU READ OR IF YOU DON'T ENJOY POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY.
Although he is a nice professor, I wouldn't take him again simply because of all the work he assigns. If you're ready to challenge yourself, then this is the class for you. If you like reading court cases, analyzing them, and discussing them in class then go for it. Also, he will call you on you in class so be prepared to always know your stuff.
Verbitsky is absolutely my favorite professor. Pay attention and do the reading. I received A's in all three classes I took with him (150, 151, 113). I would skip a reading every now and then. He wrote one of my letters of rec for law school and I couldn't have asked for a more informative and engaging professor. A lot of work, but so worth it.
His readings, in class activities, lectures, and papers can be tedious and pretty boring. Overall, he's a good professor, but he just expects a lot from you. Also, he tries to squeeze in a LOT of material for ten weeks. I would highly recommend him if you're interested in law school. I feel like this class is good preparation for that.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Lectures are so good I wouldn't skip one even if I was paid to miss it. Verbitsky is a real gem - funny and highly intellectual. Take this class.
Dude was awesome. Since 150 I've taken 151, 152 and am going to take 113 with him. Really interesting lectures that often turn into spirited class debates. Definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Professor Verbitsky is a really good professor who actually takes the time to record lectures, and share them in case you miss lecture. Beware he has group discussions randomly during class, so if you miss a lecture your participation grade might drop. Overall I learned a lot, and I found lectures to be really interesting. Also be ready to read.
Prof. Verbitsky has a profound understanding of American politics and rhetorical arguments used in contemporary politics. Pol 113 is a great course to take in order to understand mechanisms and arguments which helped conceptualize political processes prior to the 20th century, while maintaining a focus on modern day politics. Take home quiz + final
Verbitsky is too legit to quit, even as a Canadian, eh. I suppose you could call him a "devils advocate" for some of the themes regarding free speech. It didn't help to have whiners in class, but Verbitsky seems impartial, even provoking discussion without letting it get out of hand. Solid person. Read your cases and do your case briefs. Have fun.
Little boring at times but hes really nice. Work is simple enough, read your case briefs and do like a half page write up. Its pretty easy. Quizzes aren't hard, 4 multiple choice questions. Midterm, Final and a research paper. If you miss class then you lose points. He records all his lectures so you never miss anything.
If you really want a good grade, DON'T TAKE HIM !!! the tests are heavy and convoluted, so try to find another professor because Verbitsky is not a good choice.
Super intelligent and caring professor. Very helpful if you have questions and makes you feel comfortable during office hours. Mostly lecture based, but includes room for small group or class discussions. Has dorky dad humor which brightens up class.
Intelligent professor but this was one of the hardest classes I have taken at UCD. His class is weighed on 1 Midterm, 1 Final, Weekly Case Briefs, and a Case Brief Project which are ALL HARD! Exams require lots of memorization of cases that are barely covered in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT A BAD GRADE.
I'd rather watch paint dry than listen to another one of Verbitsky's lectures. Most poli sci classes are boring, but he really knows how to make one exceptionally painful. Wouldn't recommend
My thoughts during the lectures: "ok, boomer." Not the best, not the worst. Could take again if it fit my schedule, otherwise no. Meh.
Prof Verbitsky is a wonderful professor. He puts together clear lecture slides and explains them extremely well. He made the topic of constitutional politics really interesting. I know want to become a judge because of this class.
This was the first theory class I've taken and verbitsky's subtle dad humor and geniune willingness to help his students out made it a lot more manageable than expected, will definitely try to take more classes with him!
Verbitsky is such a solid Professor. Ive taken his courses both in person and online. Put in the work to do well in the class. ConLaw concepts are complex but Verbitsky provides super helpful videos online and his lectures are engaging. Each class feels meaningful. You will learn a lot so dont be intimidated! And go to office hours!
This was my second class with Professor Verbitsky. He is a very good lecturer and tries to keep you constantly engaged. I appreciate the fact that he was always trying to get us to see both sides of every argument. Even when discussions got heated, he was able to bring it back. You know what is expected and he grades very fair.
Professor Verbitsky is one of the best professors at UC Davis. He knows his stuff, including a nuanced understanding of complex constitutional issues, he's a great lecturer, he's funny, his classes are incredibly well organized (a huge boon during Covid), and it's obvious he cares about doing his best as a teacher. And he cares about his students.
This is the 2nd class I've taken with Professor Verbitsky; by the end of my 2 years at Davis I'll have taken 4 with him. One of my favorite professors, knows his stuff and really cares about being the best teacher he can. His passion for teaching really shows in how well structured his classes are and how much he incorporates student feedback.
POL113 is my third class with Professor Verbitsky, all of them awesome! If you like good lectures, well organized courses, clear expectations, and insightful inquiry into American jurisprudence and political thought, then take as many classes as you can with him!
Great professor. Interesting lectures, knows his stuff, and overall a nice guy. Decent amount of homework and studying, but if you follow the instructions you are probably fine. Very passionate and good at showing the nuance in ConLaw.
Reading the case briefs is vital. If you come to class without having read, you're not gonna be able to learn. Lectures are real interesting and give lots of opportunities to discuss and debate-even on zoom. Canvas site is really well organized. This is my second course with him, scheduled to take a third next quarter.
Verbitsky is a must take professor! You know exactly what it takes to do well and I have never had a more accessible professor. Do yourself a favor and take a class from him!
As a STEM major, this was the best class I've taken at UCD. This class has opened my eyes to the importance of free speech and I've learned so much in the process. Prof is very knowledgeable and funny. Very accessible as well. If you just do the weekly readings and write the case briefs, you will learn so much. Must take!
The people rating him badly are mad you actually have to try to get an A. He is probably my favorite professor at UCD. He is super relatable and very intelligent. The classes are super interesting and I actually have fun doing the assignments. He truly cares about his students and he is a MUST TAKE prof if you want to prepare for law school!
He is a great professor and is really knowledgeable on the subject. All the negative reviews seem to be upset this class is not an easy A.
Verbitsky is a great professor but he is not just going to give you an A for showing up. He expects quality work. He is very understanding of circumstances and tries to make it so you succeed.
I am not sure why so many people are surprised about having to read for a POL class. Great Professor and interesting class.
Yall his class was more intense than I would say most other poli sci classes. He definitely expects quality work ! He was also really understanding, all you have to do is talk to him.
Hilarious/clever - makes the sometimes dry topic of constitutional politics way more bearable. Rubrics/instructions for assignments were very clear (never felt like I was guessing his expectations). Tons of reading, lots of writing. Effort good grade in my experience. Great professor all around, one of my favorites.
Professor Verbitsky really cares, and he tries to take any feedback to heart. That being said, the class is DIFFICULT, especially if you're new to upper div classes. But if you want to learn how to write case briefs, read and listen to SCOTUS cases, and discuss these things with others, POL 150-152 (and 153 after you take one) are for you.
This is a class on the 14th amendment. The title sounds enticing, but this is a constitutional law class. I still enjoyed it, but American politics is dense. There is a lot of background information and context about judicial law that would have been nice for this class. It is definitely doable but I would take POL 151 instead.
Verbitsky's a top-notch proff who draws from many awesome characters from history to enlighten us on varying views from history! He makes us think about things from multiple angles and has us discuss concepts with other classmates. If you like leading discussions or writing essays or taking quizzes as much as I do, then this class has you covered!
One of my favorite PS professors I have had so far at Davis. If you find appellate law, the Supreme Court, or the First Amendment interesting you will LOVE the class. For sure not an easy class though, grading can be tough and there is a lot of reading -- but totally possible to get a good grade. Active discord as well!
Great guy. Classes are very interesting but there is a good amount of reading and it's definitely not easy. For me, his lecture style is a little unorganized and tough to follow at times so it's very important that you don't fall behind on the reading.
My favorite polisci professor so far at Davis! Any class with Verbitsky will be challenging, but I've genuinely learned so much from the classes I've taken with him. He also organizes Canvas really well. There will be a lot of reading, classes are usually very lecture-heavy (he speaks pretty fast too), attendance matters, and be prepared to write.
Does a good job keeping lectures engaging and informative. Also has a very accommodating participation policy. As long as you read the material and attend his lectures you will do fine. He is also very tech savy, so his canvas is well organized and he even has his own discord server for his courses.
Professor Verbitsky is really funny. He knows a lot about constitutional law, though his class can be tough if you do not do the readings each night or attend most lectures. He is easy to reach outside of class and answered all of my questions very quickly. I'd recommend this class for anyone interested in going to law school.
Content wise, great instructor and easy to follow, as well as demonstrating a strong desire to get students to understand the content... at least for lectures. Outside of lecture, he easily becomes standoffish when confronting about his indifference towards students' concerns, whether about the content or being able to keep up with the course.
Professor Verbitsky is an engaging and clear lecturer who cares about his students. This class is very easy and straightforward if you do ALL the readings. Assignments are spread out so there's never a huge amount of work. If you are interested in law, take this class. Stay up to date on readings and this class is a breeze.
Very interesting and fun class. A lot of case briefs to read, not too many assignments, just 3 case briefs and a final paper and some quizzes here and there. The TAs were pretty tough graders sometimes, but overall a great class and I learned a lot about how to analyze cases and case precedents.
He definitely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. That being said, this class was difficult for me because this was my first poli sci upper div class and he is a tough grader. dont slack off and never skip class, and check in with him because he gives very good feedback. would not mind taking another one of his classes!
Cool guy. Lots of work. Educational and good lecturer. I recommend.
Fantastic professor, but also quite difficult. Difficult, but very fair. You need to actually do the readings and participation was required. Exceptional lecturer and it felt like he gave his students a good amount of respect. I took 3 of his classes and he was by far one of the best professors I ever had, but they were fairly intense classes.
super nice, very engaging lectures and discussions, reading-heavy but its worth it and so interesting, discussions about a lot of relevant material, would take again every quarter if I could
Great professor. Wouldn't recommend if you are in more than 12 units, just because I had much more work in this class compared other upper div pol courses. I learned a ton and the expectations were clear. Midterm and final were a bit overwhelming but if you put in the work and actually did the readings, and applied the lessons, you are fine.
The final and midterm were both take-home essays that were graded pretty tough. However, the lectures and abundance of other work made my grade easily recoverable. This class is hard, but I found the material interesting and important today. He truly cares, but this class is treated like an easier law class, so be ready to put in the work.
Communicates excellently with students, don't be afraid to ask him for help. He will provide a plethora of resources to ensure that students can do what they need to. Lectures are witty and generally interesting. Attendance wasn't strictly mandatory, but I loved coming to class just to hear him speak.
Professor Verbitsky is the best professor I've had at UC Davis. His lectures are engaging, and he makes a real effort to learn students' names. My only critique is his extreme obsession with AI and lazy online lectures. Fittingly, he might enjoy knowing this review was written with AI!
People who complain about Professor Verbitsky's style all have something in common, laziness. He provides videos explaining assignments. Lectures are engaging and he encourages participation, which aids in comprehension of the material. So many opportunities for success. Overall best professor I've had thus far.
The rating below about laziness is absolutely true. Do not expect an easy A or skating by without doing the readings. They are thankfully recorded which is good for reference. It is possible to get a good grade, if you do the work and put in effort, ask questions, use your resources. He is a great professor.
In depth lectures, participation is appreciated. Good professor, makes jokes and keeps discussions interesting. Clear grading criteria, accessible outside class. Not too many assignments, mostly readings, a take-home paper midterm and final that a you can work with a partner on if wanted.
Honestly such a great professor. If you're looking for a professor who genuinely cares about his students take his class. He's pretty lenient when you need extra time on a exam too
Wonderful Professor, please take him as often as you can. Recorded lectures, explanatory videos, clear grading criteria, funny, class discord, understanding, and accommodating for the attendance and setup of the class. Will take in the future.
You will have to actually put in work if you want an A in this class. However, the content is super interesting and Verbitsky tries his best to make it relevant to today. My second time taking him and I would say he is a must-take for anyone considering law school
Verbitsky isn't anywhere near as scary as he looks, you quickly learn he's a sweetheart, it's mostly the TAs that will give you issues as far as tough grading. Just stay up to date on readings and try your best, and you're likely to pass and learn well. I learned a great amount in this class
This is my second class with Professor Verbitsky and I don't plan on taking anymore of his classes. He tends to have a repeat of students, which creates this "clicky" vibe. He's a good teacher and is super easy to talk to, but if you're naturally a introvert --this class might be hard for you. I gave this class my all but never got more than a B.
Professor Verbitsky's lectures are long and dense, but they're engaging. You really get out what you put into his classes -- if you put in effort, go to lecture, etc., you'll learn a lot and get a good grade. But if you don't, you'll be lost. Entertaining classes, really valuable.
I have taken every class professor Verbitsky teaches and he is by far my favorite professor. He is very engaging and makes the classes interactive and fun. The only warning I give people is to make sure you do the readings and stay on top of your work in this class, the case briefs, quizzes, and in class discussions matter a lot towards your grade.
pol 151 was a lot more interesting than pol 153 to me. nice guy. well organized canvas. teaches well but his classes are definitely more work than average, though definitely possible to get an A if you do well on all assignments, quizzes, midterm, and final
I took POL007V. Honestly it was an amazing introduction class. I'm a Bio major but I loved this class/prof so much I might change my major lol. Reading was ok, but you definitely should watch lecture videos and stay up to date. Case briefs were so interesting didn't do the best on final paper but quiz n case brief scores saved me for an A.
I hated lectures, the teacher has obvious favorites in the class, sometimes he's easily accessible and sometimes he never responds.
A lot of writing but I really learned a lot through his lectures.
Dr. Verbitsky's classes are easily the highest-quality and valuable ones I have taken in my time at UC Davis. His curriculum is thoughtful, engaging, and is designed to work for students. Don't be intimidated by the ostensibly intimidating workload; effort makes or breaks your grade at the end of the day.
Super cool guy. Wish I could take this class in person. All online, lecture video completion is graded. Mandatory reading assignments which are graded by an AI system that is inconsistent and weird with its grading.
Going into a Verbitsky class, I was very nervous, but I'm so happy I took his class because I learned so much! Verbitsky is great and very knowledgeable and easy to reach through Discord. His lectures were my favorite, as they were so informative, and he's a funny guy, so that makes things more enjoyable. Midterm was hard but doable.
Professer Verbs organized this online course pretty well. There were a lot of small assignments, but nothing was too difficult or extra-time consuming. He was very active on the Discord and consistently providing assistance/feedback. Overall, a really good professor who knows his stuff.
He's so obsessed about the constitution, the funniest thing is he thinks he's smart 🤓but he's so dumb.
This was my most challenging class this quarter, there are high expectations and a big workload. I learned a lot from it. There were bi-weekly graded readings, and you had to do three case briefs. These help offset the midterm and final essay which are graded pretty harshly. Reading the material is super important and helped me do well.
The lectures are long, drawn out, and not all that great. His TAs grading is all over the place, and you have students grade several assignments, which seems to be their goal to grade as hard as possible. His AI policy is BS. Using AI to help with spelling, grammar, or formatting will get you reported yet he uses AI to find your AI, but he hates AI
Two-hour lectures. Lots of yap. Lots of reading. Very strict AI policy; was flagged despite not using it. Take another course.
This class was one of the hardest lower division political science courses I have taken. There are a lot more readings and writings to do than my upper division courses. TA's were super helpful though. Very strict AI policy.
This class was extremely hard and was way too much work in my opinion. He's accessible outside of class, especially through Discord. I think his AI policy was harsh and I'd be scared to submit anything just incase I'd get flagged, even though I didn't use it.
