An excellent proffessor. Keeps the attention of all students.
Great Prof, he is SO here for the students
This guy is excellent. I learned a lot in his class and enjoyed his class too.
Wonderful Prof! Wants his students to learn and succeed and it shows

Great work!
Totally hot. And inspiring..........
So helpful! Great for extra help. Gorgeous smile. Recommended!
Excellent teacher, nice guy, intelligent discussions
VeryGenius, yet speaks as he's a real person vs. the typical crazy academic.
really good lectures, you'll enjoy his classes!
amazing guy -- still one of my favourite profs after 4 years of school
Class was good, prof seemed like a good guy. But his biased marking on my essay b/c he didn't agree with my point of view has turned me off of studying english.
Tough professor, but learned more than in classes with easy professors - very smart guy - has a lot of political opinions
His marking can be tough, but he is lenient on deadlines. He understands that we may have busy schedules.
Very helpful, intelligent, strong feminist. The course was great! I'd take another class with him easily. A bit of a hard marker on essays.
He is incredibly SEXY!!! I took a class I hated just because he was teaching it. He has a way of making even the boring novels seem interesting. I just can't get over how HOT he is.
awesome prof.
Fun teacher to listen to, well set out essays and final exam, very clear, and if you stayed for lectures, easily passible
Mark is a great teacher, he put out some pretty cool ideas and is a HUGE feminist, which was awesome. He had a great sense of humor he was tough but fair with the essay, and was more than willing to help you out with essays etc. AWESOME guy take his class
Interesting essays throughout course. Disagree with having class critique my essays, they don't know anymore than I do and lead me in the wrong direction a few times.
I loved this course and still talk to the prof a year later! He is a great teacher.
Very interesting. Good points of view and very knowledgable. Interesting.
awesome class, awesome prof. Id take any course he taught hes just that kind of interesting
hard marker. didn't care for the class or the prof.
O man, Mark is the MAN! Easy marker! keeps 110% of your attention. He makes eveything easy on you. Funny, intelligent, super COOL dude !
He's an interesting prof, but he's a pretty hard marker. I really liked him through the first course that I took with him, but in the second one, my opinion of him went down hill.
Mark is dope man. I have hated every english class Ive taken except this one. He actually made English interesting for me.
Heard great things about this prof, but was unimpressed.
Great Prof. No old-school stuffiness. He references modern media such as films, video games, music to elevate analysis of centuries old texts.
Mark is an entertaining instructor with strong opinions. I appreciated his flexibility in instructions and special circumstances. Work hard and be creative and you'll do fine in his class. FYI - he dislikes emoticons, conservatives/republicans, and Top Gun. Mark probably will read this and know who this is, so hi Mark! Here's a chili just for you.
Mark is one the most gifted instructors I have had in University. His classes are very interesting and engaging, his assignments are relevent to the course material, and he is very straight forward and an overall great guy. I definately recommend taking one of his classes!
A really cool guy. His appearance doesnt look like an instructor with the Ph.D. However, his class is interesting and he really knows how to make presentation become comfortable 4 his students.
Cool guys and very entertaining...but he tends to get rather emotional and takes things a little too personally.
What a great new addition to the faculty! His classes are fun, well prepared & very interesting. Also a nice guy...I wonder if he's married?
lotz of homework... lotz of readings... lotz of presentations... hard marker... Don't take his class if you want to get an A... the highest mark you can get probably maximum 80... Funny but has mood swings... only recommended to anyone who does not need this class for credits... hilarious classes if you're not his students...looks like an ****
an intelligent person...has a good heart for trying to teach his students...sometimes he makes you feel dumb
Mark is an awesome teacher, but don't expect it to be easy. If you work hard youll get a good Mark, mind the pun..
Mark is an awesome prof to have. He tells things like it is, and has some pretty good stories too. When he gives you feedback on an assignment pay attention to it because it helps alot. By far one of the best profs I have had in my first 2 years of University.
Marks good****
Terrible prof! Avoid, avoid! Too full of himself and plays favorites.
Despite a tremendous workload and demands from Mark, this class was one of the most valuable I have ever taken. Mark is professional yet approachable and down to earth. His teaching style leads to experiential learning and deepens our understanding of course material. His combination of lecture, guest speakers and student presentations was great
FUNNY GUY
Mark is a "down to earth" who has many interesting stories and opinions. I really enjoyed his class because it was very different from my regular classes. I hope I get another opportunity to take another one of his classes. Rumour has it he teaches a communication class in the MBA program. ROCK ON MARK!!
awesome prof! made you want to come to class. he treats his students like adults which is refreshing. talks with you not to you.
He's a little scary sometimes, but entertaining.
So full of himself! He treats his students like they're stupid. I wouldn't go thru taking his class ever again.
definitly moody hahaha
i really liked his style of teaching, he gets along with most students. but his classes are tough and have alot of little projects, with one or two major ones. not a walk in the park, but a great teacher. i'm glad i took his class, he pushes students to do there best. he's also got a sense of humor and can accommodate students. thanks mark!!
thinks he knows everything about everything. makes his students feel stupid and LOVES to rag on you when you don't think the same way he does. he is very outspoken and gives you assignments that some consider a little too controversial to be talked about in class. he is a teacher that tries to hard to be remembered.
Mark is terrible and mean. Plays favourites all the time and never marks your work, while giving too much work out. His teaching is terrible, he thinks he is on top of the world and he is right about everything. He needs to get off his high horse and start being a professional teacher.
He's awesome, fun, engaging, and the work load is just challenging enough to keep you interested but not enough to stress you out.
One of the nicest profs you will ever meet who really cares about his students. Want a prof and a friend, take Wallin.
A great prof! Half the things he says I feel like I need to look up in a dictionary but at least he inspires me to learn and actually speak at a 4th year level! An amazing prof with a huge amount of knowledge at his disposal. Always entertaining and unorthodox.
Really comical which is refreshing. Sometimes preaches to advanced students in class and makes it difficult for the rest of the students to follow. Overall really amiable and a fair marker.
I. Love. Mark. It was a 3 hr class and I was never bored. The workload was decent but not too heavy. He can make jokes and be your friend but he can still teach you at the same time. I highly recommend him! If you show up + do work it's an easy A for sure.
Great teacher. Doesn't play favorites, treats his students equally and cares about his students well-being. Workload was just right and inspires students to use their creativity. I highly recommend his classes
As a student with other courses and a part time job, his workload was absurd. He takes forever to mark anything, and when he does his reasoning for marking is unclear. His assignments are way too broad and vague, and he seemed to change every one right before the due date.
Maybe he is a cool guy in real life but as a teacher he is not. His assignments are way too big and vague, he does not give any clarifications. U have to buy a textbook otherwise u will fail. It takes him sooooo long to mark assignments as well. Wouldn't recommend to take this course with him.
Cut our 3 hour class short every week by more than an hour. His assignments are vague. He takes forever to hand them back. His remarks on assignments are also vague and unhelpful. Seems to be more interested in being a cool prof than a good one.
Gotta laugh at the "Mark is terrible & mean" comment. Absolutely ludicrous! Mark is such an awesome prof. Engaging and passionate about everything he teaches and especially his students. This guy is one of a kind. An even better person than he is a teacher...if thats possibly. Can't say enough good things about him & his teaching.
I have mixed feelings about Mark as a professor. He is very vague and broad when explaining the assignments. He gives you the option of choosing whatever you want to do for essays and assignments, but he gives no real direction. I found that class time was pretty pointless because we had more classes with guest speakers then with him teaching.
I really don't understand how so many people like this guy?! Mark is a terrible professor.. Mark gives no direction on assignments and gives out tons of readings for the class. I can't believe it, it's half way through the semester and we still have no marks for this class. What a joke! If he doesn't mark you on attendance, don't waste your time.
Mark is smart, really smart. But it seems like he doesn't realize he's teaching undergrads. I mean, assigning a book+ a week to a bunch of 3rd years and expecting them to write 500 word responses that he never reads or responds to then expects long winded essays that no one understands the point of only for him to lecture us some more. Silly...
If each semester there was an award for; "Class that is the biggest joke goes too.." it would definitely be CMNS 3020 with Mark Wallin. This guy would make us read a book and watch a movie each week, then expect us to write a "weekly" essay. Marks feed back on assignments were just complaints without any actual feedback. AVOID this guy at all cost!
This course is required by tourism students however Mark teaches it as if we are 4th year advanced writing students. He assigns multiple-long readings every week that do not relate at all to any of the assignments. When it comes to the assignments he is very vague on his expectations but hard in his marking. Would avoid taking this course!
Mark is awesome. I really wish I had the opportunity to take more of his classes. If you're looking to skip class, do minimal work and breeze through Uni w/o learning anything of value, Mark is NOT the prof for you. Mark can be tough but he's respectful and approachable and wants you to succeed. He uses lots of varied material which is refreshing!
Mark Wallin is a very respected and highly rated teacher. He always strives to be hilarious in his lectures and always uses past incidents in his life to make the class more entertaining. However, He takes years to mark your work. Hand in an assignment 2 months ago? good luck getting it marked. Also, a tough grader in my opinion.
Gives very little feedback on assignments. lectures literally come straight from the textbook, read the text and you wont need any lectures. Also doesn't mark assignments in a timely manner.
Mark Wallin is the head of my Communications and Public Relations Program, and I really respect him as an instructor, program coordinator, and a person. I'm honestly not sure why he has so many bad ratings? Mark expects a high level of quality work done in any of his classes. Put in effort with him, and you will see the results. Great professor!
Mark can often be very vague and abrupt about specific criteria that he expects from the class. Luckily, at least in my class, I found the assignments to be easy and had no trouble completing them. However, he takes anywhere from 1-2 months to mark anything, so if you struggle with CMNS, don't expect any feedback. I have neutral feelings overall.
Not an overly difficult class. Pretty lazy with assignments, just taken straight out of the book. His name should be 'no mark' he takes forever to grade assignments and is sporadic with how he marks things. He didn't post final grades until 2 days after deadline for professors and never posted mid term marks from 2 months ago. Frustrating teacher.
Mark Wallin is one of the few professors at TRU I actually look forward to having classes with. Mark is hilarious, smart, and he really gives you a lot of freedom with the assignments he gives out. Slack off in his class and put in poor effort? Then you will barely pass his course. Put in effort and participate; you will get a great mark.
Lots of readings and large assignments, so I definitely recommend staying on top of your work in Marks class. Even though Mark is a very 'lecture heavy' professor, he is pretty easy going about a lot of things. If you need help in his class, make sure you book an office hours appointment with him. It takes him a long time to mark assignments.
The course was broken down into weekly assignments, a midterm and a group paper/presentation (pick your group members wisely). Mark knows the topic very well but as the saying goes, "do as I say, not as I do". Somehow as a communications teacher, he lacks proper communication skills. Poor feedback on assignments and tests. Takes forever to grade.
Skip class and put in poor effort on assignments? You will have a horrible experience in Marks class. Mark really respects students who show up to class and put in effort on all of the assignments. Participate in his lectures and get involved, you will benefit with participation marks too. His lectures can be long and sometimes off topic, though.
Mark Wallin is a solid choice, and I would recommend him to anyone. Mark is a great lecturer, very passionate about what he teaches, and very considerate to students who put in a lot of effort. I found the classmates that skipped class and put in poor effort on assignments were the only students who complained. Awesome guy.
Mark is a fine professor, who is very well spoken and understanding. At the same time, he gives out a lot of readings and assignments. If you are a student, who struggles to figure out concepts on your own, you will have a hell of a time in his class. Make sure you talk to him if you need extra clarification, or else it will be a constant struggle.
Mark is a very knowledgeable professor and good lecturer but very poor in other areas such as marking papers in a timely manner, providing feedback to students for improvement and terrible by example as his own communication is poor. I learned a lot from him but it was only due to lack of timely marking and valuable feedback.
This was the first class I have ever taken with Mark Wallin, and I didn't mind his class at all. I took his class as an upper level elective, so I wasn't sure how he was going to teach a film class with lectures. The work load was a lot, considering it was an elective class for a lot of people. But, I wish he handed back papers in a timely manner.
Mark is a really good professor, and he cares about students who put in a lot of effort and show up to class. That being said, I found his criteria for assignments and projects to be way too broad. The timeline, in which he marked and gave back grades, was way longer than I anticipated.
I like Mark as a professor, since he is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. My MAJOR complaint with him all semester, was the fact his criteria for assignments was so broad. I actually lost marks on my final paper because he mixed up the instructions on the two final papers he gave out. Ask a lot of questions!
I really enjoyed the film noir course that Mark Wallin taught in the winter semester (2017). Marks lectures were excellent, entertaining, and very informative! I definitely would take another class with Mark in the future. Although Mark is a hard marker, he is really fair and understanding if you talk to him about any issues you have. Recommend!
Its a free credit course. All you need to write a story without paying attention what assignment is about. Basically, He does not read assignments. It is a great free 3 credit course.
Mark is unique professor, who can keep an entires class attention during his lectures, something most professors struggle to do. I learned a lot in his class, but be prepared to put in a lot of effort and time into your assignments. I really enjoyed how easy it was book appointments and get email responses back from him in a timely manner, too.
Mark is unique professor, who can keep an entire classes attention during his lectures, something most professors struggle to do. I learned a lot in his class, but be prepared to put in a lot of effort and time into your assignments. I really enjoyed how easy it was book appointments and get email responses back from him in a timely manner, too.
Mark is a really good professor, and I always enjoy his lectures. It has been mentioned here many times before, but you have to stay on top of his workload. Mark gives out a lot of readings and assignments, and it can be very easy to fall back in his course. His instructions can be broad, but he really encourages new ideas for his assignments.
Lectures a lot. Be prepared for a paper due once a week with insane word counts (4000). A couple of group papers as well with little time to work on them. Also very unclear as to what he wants. Very slow marker. Semester just finished & I only have 4/10 assignments marked & handed back to me. However, there are no tests in this class.
I like Mark a lot, and I think he's a great guy! That being said, the course content and material was all over the place, and I found that the group projects would have been easier as individual assignments. Lazy and uninterested students in your group; especially, when you take classes in Marks class, will kill your grade. Go solo when you can.
I really like Mark as a prof. He is an engaging lecturer, one of the best I have had at TRU. Despite this, he gives minimal feedback on assignments which sucks, and he is a very slow marker. Also, in this class in particular he gave tons of difficult assignments which are only worth 10 percent each. I still liked this class and would recommend him
I like Mark, and he is definitely a solid choice as a professor. But, be prepared to spend a lot of time on his assignments, since he gives out a lot over the course of a semester. Mark gives good feedback on assignments, but it takes forever to get your grades (as mentioned). I recommend office hours if you need help with any of his assignments.
I really like Mark a lot, but I find that his course content is way too broad. If you are an individual type student, you will excel in any of his classes. If you cannot figure out concepts on your own, and be able to come up with your own content, you will struggle mightily in his class. Be prepared, he gives out a lot of homework each week.
Be prepared... Mark gives out a lot of readings and assignments throughout the semester, and you can easily fall behind if you don't stay on top of the workload. It's been mentioned here before, but I will say it again. It takes him a while to get back your marks on assignments and projects. His lectures are entertaining, but they can be long.
Mark is awesome, but MAN does he give a lot of assignments! For FILM4100 in particular, you have to watch upwards of 4 hours of TV shows and movies each week and write an essay on them EVERY WEEK, alongside some lengthy readings and other assignments. Mark is a generous marker and a good prof, but his classes are not a walk in the park.
One of the best professors I have ever had... Mark's lectures are engaging, entertaining, and extremely informative! Throughout my time at TRU, I can say that Mark is by far one of the best professors there. Even though he gives out a lot of homework and readings (stay on top..) compared to other profs, he appreciates students who put in effort.
I'm a big fan of Mark, and I have always enjoyed his classes. Unfortunately, it seemed like I didn't even have him as a professor this time around. Mark cancelled a handful of classes throughout the semester, and he was harder to get a hold of too.. Great professor & funny guy! But, for some reason, he had to cancel quite a few classes.
Mark is definitely one of the best professors at TRU from my experience. However, if you are planning on taking a class with him, there are a few things you need to know. Be prepared for long lectures, making a lot of time for his class, and a ton of homework; weekly essays around 1000 words, and around a few hours of readings & videos to boot.
Mark is a really entertaining professor, and it's great to see how passionate he gets whenever he is teaching you. Be prepared, he gives out a lot of readings, papers, and homework in general. It wasn't uncommon to write over 1000 word weekly essays, along with a few hours of readings/videos. Learn to manager your time, or else you will be drowned.
Mark's expectations in this class are atrocious. The amount of work he gives, with the amount of time he expects you to put into each assignment is unattainable. It is the last day of classes for this semester and my class only has 4/10 assignments marked! His feedback on assignments are harsh and belittling. Get ready to understand nothing!
I have mixed feelings on Mark since I found him to be very nice, funny, and understanding if you needed to chat with him about something. Unfortunately, as a professor, I felt that he wasn't "present" for most of the semester. Most of our lectures were cut short, he didn't give much feedback on assignments, and he cancelled a few classes in a row.
Whenever I have the chance to take a FILM course with Mark, I always take it! His lectures are really informative and entertaining, and he really gives you a lot of free reign when it comes to assignments and projects. It has been mentioned that he gives out a lot of homework, which is true. If you manage the workload, you will enjoy his class.
Mark is smart! Extremely smart... Sometimes I think he forgets he is teaching undergraduate students, though... His classes are entertaining; yet, they can also be confusing for the amount he teaches you each lecture. Stay on top of his class since there is a ton of homework and reading each week, and go to his office hours for additional help.
Mark expects so much from the students. He gives a lot of papers every week.
Mark is clearly very passionate about what he does, probably the reason why his work ethic is unmatched at TRU, at least I think so personally. Do your work and always seek for his feedback, you will do fine in his class.
I loved Mark's film class so much! He is incredibly passionate and the lectures were so profoundly interesting, definitely excited to take more of his classes. The workload can feel like a lot (he assigned one paper a week) but taking some notes during the lectures made it easier for me, as well as reading the articles he assigned. Great prof!
