Good teacher, liked the simulations. Online Quizzes, def liked his class. He is a hard grader when it comes to writing papers. Curves.
A lot of work but you do learn, follow instructions and you will have no problem. He is very funny and can be intimidating at first.Frequent in class group discussion but no project. You should take his class, he knows his material.
There is always something going on with this professor/class. You need to be prepared for class all the time. Lots of papers (Case Analysis and Simulation) and reading (Chapters and Case Analysis). Lots of participation required, but NO project. You do learn a thing or two when you're done.
Don't be intimidated by this professor. He's really a nice guy once you understand him better. Quirky and cute, really. The material isn't too hard, but incorporating it into case analysis papers can be tricky at times. Just take all the easy quizzes, don't miss any papers, and actively participate in class discussion. Super easy B, but hard A.
His class is like multi-level marketing as it seems interesting at first, but the farther along you move, the more screwed-up it becomes. Very fast paced style, grades papers tight, pop quizzes, caught-up in terminology, and a ridiculous online simulation [costs $30]. Also, its very dificult to figure your grade status. Take Dr. Laurie instead!
Good professor. A lot of work. Lecture is enjoyable, but the case analysis and simulations take up a lot of time.
He's sort of got a chip on his shoulder and brushes students off. I'm not sure that he's ever actually managed a business of any kind, though he teaches management classes.
4Group homework 1 group 6 page paper 3 exams. He does this stupid game shows that suppose help but doesn?t. Don?t take him take someone else.
Don't agree with the - ratings, do agree with the +. Awesome Prof. Demanding, yes. Intimidating at first, possibly (very dry wit). Really funny, entetaining, and interesting guy. IB didn't much interest me until I took his class. He brought it to life. You form a team for homework and a term project. "Game show" simulations were fun & helpful.
Awesome teacher. Don't get scared the first couple of days he gets better. He is a good teacher but there is a lot of material so you need to review alot yourself. He is funny and pretends like he doesn't care but he really does.
International Business, this cynical, hipster Egomaniac's goal is to get tenured and be a malicious fool. Day to day lecturing consists of a couple sentences explaining a term from the chapter, then some wild assumption that has no support or basis. Promises curve for F tests, but all the class gets is jabs and jokes at our stupidity.
Class is interesting, he definitely knows the cases and is good at analyzing. Open to all comments but will crack jokes at your expense. It's all in good fun. Class time isn't too difficult, the simulation is fun. Projects are a bit demanding, but overall interesting.
Intimidating at first but don't be. Midterms are hard, READ THE TXTBK. there are group proj and hw proj. he gives out a lot of extra credit. you'll need an iclicker. he isn't my favorite but he isn't the wrost.
4 years at CSULB & I can say this Prof is one of my faves. He can be a bit tough because he sticks to his rules, and doesnt really make exceptions but the course is fun. Class exercises and participation required, but you will definitely not be falling asleep in this class. Reading is required in order to be prepared for class. Chili 4 his muppet!
Learned so much in this class! No tests. Optional final. Need to go to class for pop quizzes. You only use the text book to read the cases but they are mostly interesting. Definitely one of the only classes in the business department that I learned something applicable after college.
Definitely wouldn't recommend taking this class with him. His lectures are not helpful at all. He shows Powerpoint slides with a couple words and does not explain anything. Don't get me wrong, he makes jokes that are pretty funny and seems like a great guy, but don't take his class!
Dr. Washburn is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I don't understand why more people don't give him a chili pepper.
Dr. Washburn is a brilliant professor. His expectations are high but that is to push students to their full potential. He doesn't like excuses, just get it done. His humor is dry, witty humor but hilarious nonetheless. Very helpful during office hours. It was a pleasure to attend his lectures and i learned a great deal. By far my favorite prof.
Definitely hardest class I ever took. 2 SURPRISE Midterms and 1 final that's 108 questions on the whole book, which is a lot of reading!!! He does offer some big extra credit, which I think is saving my grade now. If your interested in International Business I highly recommend NOT to take him the other teachers I hear are better.
The opposite of a teacher. His approach to teaching was to use scare tactics. Ask questions, get humiliated. Answer "I don't know" to his cold call questions, get kicked out of class. Two surprise midterms, NO study guides. Extremely difficult tests. Avg. score 40-50%. The most confusing grading scale I've ever seen. Avoid Him!
Save your GPA and your sanity by avoiding this guy. He seems to enjoy belittling students and makes the class feel dumb when the exam average is 50%. I don't know where his attitude comes from, but it sure isn't because he knows how to teach.
Washburn is a very tough teacher but I can see his ways coming from years of students just not listening to simple directions. 3 tests and a group projectvideo. If you put in the work and time to study an A is possible. His cold call questions are nervewracking but just read the night before and you'll be okay. Take it serious and you'll be good.
Absolutely amazing teacher! Makes funny comments to every single slide and is incredibly knowledgable! He changed the surprise midterm system to a weekly based quiz system which are still hard but at least you know when they are going to take place. Great improvement!
If you have the chance to choose his class, do it! Yes, it is not easy to get an A in this class and yes you will get weekly quizzes but what I learned in this class blew me away! He covers so many fascinating topics and gives you amazing inside knowledge, which would otherwise take you hours of reading papers such as the Wall Street Journal.
Dr. Washburn's exams and quizzes are so difficult. His group project is doable. He assigns a lot of extra credit. He's humorous, but it doesn't make up for his confusing questions and expectations.
Great professor. Pepper worthy
He is very strict however you can pass if you really try.
Best teacher I've ever had! Take him but expect hard quizzes!
There was pop quizzes required to read a lot.
Nice professor, just a little bit too difficult
Awesome lectures. Really funny.
Lots of quizzes
Lectures are long and attendance is mandatory for the weekly quizes. Tons of extra credit is given that will help you pass.
Very helpful. Amazing professor
He gave hard quizzes and test. But he made lectures interesting. He puts you on the spot. If you don't like that don't take him. But he is a good teacher.
I would take every single course with him, if I could!!! Be prepared to study!
Tough class, fun teacher
I go through the open university program here at CSULB. I petitioned and get his class. Probably the professor that sealed csulb as my number 1 pick for transfer in business admin.
Quizzes are tough but professor is very clear and helpful during office hours. Made lectures interesting and kept students attentive. Must study chapter(s) before each class
I would take him again. He cares and is fair. Do your work get the grade.
He has a very dry sense humor, so many will think he is unpleasant, but otherwise a great teacher.
Awesome lecture!
Took Washburn for CBA 300. His class consisted of weekly quizzes, a group project, participationparticipation, and a final. He gives a lot of extra credits. Interesting lectures.
Good teacher show up to class and pay attention.
good lectures grades on everything to keep you in check from particiapation to daily quizes
Class is difficult and to get an A it's demanding to read alot and study. There are quizzes for all chapters and they can be complicated. But, Dr. Washburn is hilarious and extremely knowledgeable. 3 hours of lecture fly by. I'd take him again and recommend him.
iClicker mandatory and how he takes roll and gives participation. (20% of the grade) Video Group project (20%) Quizes (20%) Final (20%)
Awesome!!! Be prepared to learn!
Tough class but you would learn so much. Great professor, vast of knowledge. I recommend this class.
Everythings clear about grades. Reading is a must and so is attending class. Has a dry sense of humor so thats a plus. Not as terrible as everyone says
He's a strict grader but will promote you to work hard in the class or else you won't do well in his class. He's very sarcastic so he makes the class entertaining unless you can't take the joke.
Funny, offers lots of extra credit, but quizzes and final are hard.
Really good!
Not as bad as everyone says. He's tough, but he is very clear with what he wants. Reading is a must. His dry sense of humor is what makes him great overall.
He is tough, but I really enjoyed his lectures.
Great and funny lectures. Hard grader but he grades on a curve which helps a load. Would take him again.
Really great class
he is tough but funny and interested.
If you want to learn and be challenged take this class. He makes his lectures exiting and interacts with the class. You must read the textbook to get an A, its doable. I will take him again in the spring.
Learned how and why companies want to abroad and their strategies. Professor is nice and some jokes during class which made the evening class is not boring. Take his class and take the challenges.
The textbook is boring , but his lecture is funny and interesting. The quiz is hard, but he still give opportunities for extra credit, so it is not that hard to get better grade.
You can't slack off in his class. The work is doable. He makes you read the whole book by the end of the semester.
Class is hard but doable. He made the class really interesting.
He's funny
Hes super funny and gives a lot of extra credit
Loved him! You definitely have to work for a good grade but he makes it very interesting. Do the German Host EC if you can!
He actually TEACHES! This is my first semester at LB and he is a great teacher that teaches you in a matter that you will understand. But that doesn't mean that it will be easy. Reading is essential and if you actively listen, you will be fine.
Great teacher and doable class if you put in the work
Gets off topic sometimes
He asked if we wanted a pop exam or a quizzes every week using iClickers; quizzes in which he only gave us one minute (or less) to read and answer and if we didn't answer, too bad. Offers extra credit though and a very curved grading system.
Challenging class, but he makes the lectures interesting and funny.
You must read
Easier, if you read the book.
Be ready to pay attention, do your work, ask question, and always attend class. Don't think you will be able to get through this course without renting/buying the book. Great professor if you are willing to put in the time.
He is really funny and very knowledgeable. He moves somewhat quickly, but is clear, and pauses to ask questions to make sure the class is following. The clicker is used in every class, and is the best way to get points for participation as long as you do the readings. Take him if you are looking to be challenged. Ive learned a lot in his course.
Professor Washburn knows his stuff. If you are looking to honestly learn international business, then take Him. If not, and you just want an easy A without learning anything, take another professor. Also, He has a Crude sense of humor, which makes the lecture, in my opinion, all more enjoyable.
The class can be tough but as long as you do the reading you'll be fine. He is helpful and gives out ec aswell.
Test are hard but he gives lots of extra credit. His lectures are funny. The three hours goes by pretty fast.
Tough but you learn a lot.
It is a tough class you need to be ready to read before coming to class or you'll be lost
Definitely recommend this class if you want to challenge yourself. Great lectures!
Great class. I would definitely recommend sitting in the front. The professor is very engaging, and students must be prepared to answer questions throughout the class or he will kick you out.
Very challenging, but fun.
Funny and sarcastic instructor. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Awesome teacher but a difficult class if you do not pay attention and put in the effort
I do not recommend you if you want an A by easy way. No, it must be difficult. And, he usually adapts relative grades which means that whatever score you get, your grade is depending on the place in the whole class. Also, his tests and classes are difficult. However, I can recommend you if you are challenging engaging person. So, just do it!!
Little inspiration in his lectures. Drink some coffee before his lecture. Reads and lectures directly from the textbook.
Pretty condescending and ultimately not that helpful. I learned more from the student-made midterm guide than his entire class.
Dr. Washburn is an inspirational god. Just kidding, but he really is a great teacher. 2 tests: 1 midterm and 1 final. They are hard I'm not going to lie but he does grade on a curve, hence this post. He is available for help if you do not understand the concepts and does try to relate concepts we are learning to real life. Overall he is tough!
He finished a trifecta. Want to pass his class? you have to become a Spartan.
dr. washburn is the equivalency to will smith and martin Lawrence
Super inspirational, hilarious, and helpful. But also, super supreme tough in grading assignments and tests.
Buy the book, show up to every class, pay attention and take good notes, laugh at every bad joke, fall down on your knees and worship him and his vast wisdom, and then maybe, just maybe you might get a B.
If you want a good grade be prepared to do the work. Taking Washburn is like an educated Will Farrell teaching business.
his lectures are fire! midterm and final will make you hallucinate until you finish... he sets the bar for all business profs!! the hardest class you will ever take, but he is always there to go over the syllabus with you (:
The professor's assignments are unorthodox. Having to go to a convalescent home and present our video projects to adults at the brink of death was an odd choice, but I learned you are never too old to learn. Also if you get a 0 on every assignment you can 'Shoot the moon' and he will give you a grade equal to an A. Great for busy students like me.
Take him.
To take Dr. Washburn is an experience. One does not merely TAKE his class, one lives it. Every week one can sit in his class and even muster the courage to gaze upon the God in a mortal body, donned with fashionable shirt, tie and running support shoes, that is Dr. Washburn, is a week worth waiting for and another week worth living. TAKE. HIM.
Funny and weird lol
Great class, only downside only got to see him once a week... Would take again
Greatest human being to ever grace the planet. Take his class.
Couldn't Manage to write my own name until I took this class.
After taking this class... I will change my Major to Art History and Minor to Underwater Basket Weaving.
you have to work hard on this class or else you wont pass. he gives a lot of extra credit, but you have to put effort on the ec too. tough grader and tough class. read the book ahead and understand the concept well to pass the exam.
Great Professor! very clear and helpful with his material. Don't expect an easy grade in this class. If that's what you are looking for don't take it. You will have to literally fry your brain!!!
He hosted a war with pieces of paper. I got cut. It was the best class I've ever attended. Has some of the best lectures on campus, and if you enjoy sleeping you'll become famous in his class.
Poor teaching skills. It took him forever to warm up to students. lectures are just like reading from book. Do not take him.
Hardest class I have ever taken but fun.
He is very tough, but has a great sense of humor. Get ready to read and study a lot. Two midterms and Final. Opportunities for extra credit
Great professor,
I've never had a professor that was so good at engaging a full room of students. The course is hard but it's never boring. Washburn is an equal opportunity offender so if you are sensitive, look elsewhere. However, for those who want a passionate professor that cares about the subject and its larger implications to society, take him!
Washburn is the DOPEST professor I've had at CSULB in the 2.5 yrs I have been here. At first he can be dry but he will grow on you, guaranteed! I would liken him to Tosh.0. He is actually pretty funny and I enjoyed going to his class. Attendance is a must due to the iClicker, and his tests are rough.. so study hard. PROFESSOR DOPEMAN! Take him :)
Hardest class I've ever taken, however I've learned more in this class than any other.
Great professor, but be prepared to work for your grade. Nothing is easily given!
If you are looking for a professor that will make you question the nature of reality itself than Washburn is for you. His lectures are akin to sitting at the feet of the great thinkers; Aristotle, Plato, and now Washburn. When history is written people will be split into two categories; those who took Washburn's class and those who didn't.
I almost took another professor at the beginning of the semester. That would have been the biggest mistake of my life. I'm contemplating failing his final just so that I can have another semester in his presence.
I was contemplating dropping his class in the beginning. Now I am glad I stayed. Washburn's lectures are more entertaining than Alec Baldwin's SNL impersonations.
Professor Washburn was very difficult but highly educational. I am normally exhausted before my 7pm class but the professors style was fast and fun. The test were extremely difficult but at least they were graded on a curve. I would definitely recommend this class to others.
The most difficult multiple choice exams you will ever take. SAT's are child's play.
Awesome informative professor. HARD multiple choice tests but his lectures are always entertaining.
SUPER difficult class but the professor is so entertaining/funny that you can't hate lecture. You have to read/study or else you will not pass. He's a tough grader, so expect to never get an A (or even a B) on your papers. Best of luck lol
Oh, that man! I don't think I've worked so hard for any of my classes, but I would totally fail his class just to take him again. Intellectual and hilarious, his lectures were the highlight of my semester. He loves smart people. Tests are very hard, so be prepared to study well. Definitely not an easy class, but you will love it.
Everyone hypes up Washburn because his ridiculousness is entertaining. In truth he's just an arrogant professor that likes to put on a show for his students. His exams are insanely difficult no matter how much you study. Average on his exams is less than 50%. He doesn't post any grades either, so you don't know how you're actually doing. Avoid him!
Yes his exams are the most difficult exams I have ever endured, however, they can be passed if you read the chapters. He gives lots of extra credit and participation points, just show up to class. His lectures are entertaining but he forces participation and will embarrass you/possibly kick you out.
Professor Washburn is one of a kind. He is not afraid to let you experience the "tough world" in his class. He rewards intellect, hard work, and creativity. Bring iClicker to the first class. Let your creativity and humor shine in the group project. The grading criteria provided usually covers the minimum requirements to get a C only. Take him!
What's up with everyone giving this guy positive feedback? He is by far the worst professor I've taken at CSULB. He tries to humiliate his students and takes advantage of the little power that he has. On top of that, his tests are ridiculously difficult. Clearly said his goal is to make students drop the class to grade less tests/papers. Good luck
He may be a tough professor but you will come out of this course with a lot of knowledge. Not everything is given you have to earn it. Overall, he is a very tough professor and you are more than likely to fail his exams if you don't study extra hard.
This class is DIFFICULT, but loved the prof and his humor (be prepared to be embarrassed in class). Has 3 multi-choice tests, 2 MT +cumm. final, and also group project. His tests are so difficult; the grade averages D/C (yes overall grade based on class avg). Test is based off text+lec. iClicker req'd; Doesn't give much feedback about final grade
Dr. Washburn changed my college experience. His class is basically a very serious stand-up comedy show. Most knowledgeable professor in the CBA. If you want an easy A this is not the class for you; take only if you like a good challenge that will bring value to your college experience. His short term study abroad is by far best experience in CBA
Entertaining and very intelligent. Show up, and be responsible. You have to apply yourself here and take responsibility for your behavior and study habits. If you can't do well here then you shouldn't be in college. He sets high standards and expects you to perform like adults in the real world. No lazy and silly excuses.
Worst professor I've ever had. Completely arrogant and not transparent. His grading scale does not match his syllabus and is completely random. Do not take this professor.
Insecure teacher who takes advantage of his authority on impressionable kids who don't know any better. For all those who think he is cool now, you will soon realize after you mature what a tool he is. He has a decent sense of humor but other than that, total tool who uses his position to intimidate kids who don't realize he is just a teacher
The first thing you should know is that you are
