He is an amazing teacher. Plus, he's a lot of fun!
Great teacher! Inspiring, and helpful with your essays. Took three classes with him. A++++++++++
I don't know what everyone else who rated this guy is thinking, but he was an arrogant, condescending jerk. The class was easy, but that's because he knew even less than the students did about non-western mythology.
easy fun, great guy. SUPER HOT!!
he was an odd teacher and he made me feel very stupid.
The only thing bigger than my dislike for his class, is his ego! Waters is very rude, and thinks he is above his students, when in fact they probably know more than he does.
He does have a very large ego and tells you its okay if you don't understand the definite meaning of a poem or story, but then when the answer is not what he wants, he makes you feel a little stupid. The stories/poems he picked were interesting, but his grading on essays was difficult. I pulled out a B luckily. He is always late to class.
Definitely a great teacher, but if you don't consider yourself an intellectual you'll probably want to find someone else.
Not the greatest myth teacher on the planet. Knows some stuff, but God forbid you correct him. Ego the size of Montana.
terrible teacher. i dont think it is possible for this man to be more into himself.
Terrible teacher. I'm surprised his ego could fit through the door.
very closed minded and self righteous.
He always makes classes interesting and welcomes going into deeper conversations on random issues of interest. encourages class participation. great guy.
overall great teacher

Teacher is very concrete on his lessons on paper writing. Has presentations that must be done in front of class. Very good looking.
Unfortunately good looks and total arrogance don't provide a good classroom environment. I signed up for Creative Writing, and was expecting a different teacher, and I must say Waters was a total disappointment mentally. If I could recommend the removal of any teacher in this whole school, it would be him. He is rude, arrogant, and a generally bad teacher. I learned nothing other than that the art of writing is subjective, as long as you agree with him. Total waste of time and money.
I had waters for comp. 2 and I thought he was a great teacher. Only had to write 2 research papers and read a couple short stories (and take quizzes on the short stories). I heard for some comp 2 classes students had to read a book and write a paper about it. What a high school assignment and a waste of time! Any questions about my paper I had I just asked him personally, and he answered them.
I think all the criticism of his ego is probably valid, though I didn't notice it, but as for being condescending? Not a chance. Those people must not be very good at English. Often the discussion was a little superficial, but that owes more to the retards in the class. If you like the subject, and are good at it, he's a good match for you. Easy A
His class is good because he is trying to change the way we write. he is trying to have us relate to our writing and therfore make it better.
One of the best educators at MCC. He's a super nice guy too. But he teaches at a college level, so don't expect to be able to blow off his assignments. His classes are challenging.
I don't understand people who say Waters has a big ego; he's one of the most down to earth people I've ever met. I mean I've sat in his classes when people who were totally unprepared pulled comments out of their asses that made no sense and he still tried to give them some credit. That's not ignorance on his part, it's arrogance on the part of some students. All in all you get out what you put in in his class discussions. He's an awesome teacher and a nice guy, as long as you're an ok student.
For all the people who defend Waters because only idiots do poorly in his class: I got an A and I still say he is a prick. His ego is way to big for his own good. He told us that he is the only teacher really worth reccomending in the English Dept. What a chump!
oh my gosh. the most annoying teacher i have ever had. he is always right. everything anyone says is wrong if it isnt what he is thinking. he goes on and on about NOTHING. i have him for english and theater and he always has something stupid to say. hes always like.. uhmmm right. right, whatever. he is the only teacher that makes me want to
Ok maybe when your taking a intro level class he thinks he is always right... probably becuase he is. When you have him as a professor as an upper level class he's pretty much open to discussion. I have had him for two classes and it may be hard but if you try and don't think your always right, you'll do much better.. Guaranteed.
Excellent teacher. really cares about everyone succeeding and gives all the help you are willing to ask for.
He rambles on about a lot of useless stuff and adds swears when he thinks we're not paying attention just to keep us interested. He also seems to get "lost in thought" after someone makes a comment and says "we'll go back to that. That's interesting" but never do. Rather ridiculous
Great Teacher, Always made class super interesting and was very helpful. Interesting and thoughtful discussions. As for all the ego comments, What? I thought he was very down to earth and personable.
Encourages creative thought. Tries to find the best in everyone's work. Very encouraging.
He is a wonderful and insightful instructor. I loved going to class every single day and learn something new. He expects a lot out of his students (which is the way it should be in college)but he is always there to help. Take notes and pay attention and class will be a breeze. Finally, he is incredibly good looking which is definitely a plus;)
I truly do not understand the students that are commenting on his ego. First of all, ego has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with how he teaches. I have had him for 2 courses and he NEVER made a student feel stupid. Second of all, the students who commented on his ego probably didn't do very well in his course(s). He was ALWAYS extremely encouraging.
Has a potty mouth..but very smart.
I love this man.
Mark is a horrible teacher. If there is a motto to describe his style of teaching it would be "Do as I say not as do".
I took the online section over the summer. The class was pretty easy I would recommend it.
His discussion style of teaching was great, enjoyed every second of American Literature to 1860!
mark is the wrost teacher I've ever, He is no help and only cares about him self and himself only, He's cold hearted DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH MARK HE WILL FAIL YOU !!!!!!
His online Comp2 course had nearly no work. 2 papers, 4 discussions, and 4 quizzes. That is my definition of a very light work load. The only issue is that if you have any problems writing on your own, you better go to the Sage Center or see him. It fits the bill for those that don't feel like putting forth any effort or want to take it online.
Best teacher I ever had for an english class and he was very helpful I took an online class but went to ask him questions in person. I would recommend this professor to any who need an english 151 class!
Great professor, really laid back as long as you come to class. Classes were mostly discussion, and at least with the other people I had in the class, discussion was always interesting.
took class online
Took over the summer had 4 quizzes 4 dis. boards and two papers. Light work load really, not a bad guy at all.
Barely any assignments for the online class, which makes it hard if you miss an assignment. Felt he was very lazy. Never met him in person but really don't want to after taking his online class. He's very short with his email responses and makes you feel like an idiot if you ask him a simple question. Was extremely disappointed...
Mark was my instructor for english 1 & 2.There are few assignments, so if you like classes where you are overloaded with homework his sections not for you.I really hate english classes thank you Mark for understanding that not all of us are english majors and do not care to write 2 or 3 papers a week like some other english instructors.
Had him for many classes (four total). Great teacher. Passionate about subject, enjoys discussion. Not too many homework assignments. Few papers. Great class!
Great teacher. I took online ENG 152 spring 2011 and got an A. He was always quick to respond to emails.
Mark did not really even know the subject matter, and there wasn't a textbook either; but I'm still going to say that his ego and rediculous non-related side stories made me want to drop. badly. Between his tests and student presentations, i think i did more work than he did,and that was not a lot. BOOOOOO
I found Mark's teaching style to be extremely comprehensible and relevant to both class and the outside world. I recommend his classes to everyone.
Mark is the greatest teacher I have ever had. He is willing to listen and help when needed. I love how he is willing to allow me to ask those questions like can I do this. I have him for online comp two as well.
All Mark does is talk, and talk and talk some more. His classes are very boring and he is never prepared. All he does is have you read out loud and then he analyse what you read. It's so pointless.
I'm so glad I had Mark for Comp II this past semester. He is very helpful when it comes to writing and is not shy about making corrections to your essays, which only improve your writing style. He's one of the more relatable teachers at the school and I hope to take more classes with him.
One of the best teachers, if you are looking for a light homework. He talks nonstop. He definitely likes to talk about the Bible and his faith. He'll swear, which is weird. I took him 2 times and like him a lot! He won't give back you back your papers but that's ok.He's very critical about writing and will make you talk..so talk! Very easy grader.
Nice guy, simple class. Mainly journaling and class discussion. Thing that bothers me is that during discussions, Mark will ask many questions, but will continue to ask the same question until he hears exactly what he wants. Seems to just brush you off if you don't say what he wants to hear.
I am taking Mark's 152 class online right now. I would not suggest taking any ENG classes that he teaches, as there is a very light work load, and right now I have a 74%, maintaining the C needed to pass the class. I've learned my lesson never to go with him again and ALWAYS to stick with Lisa Crizer if possible!
I was excited for this class at first but as the class went on he makes things unnecessarily vague. Write about this subject, but don't write about it, just write how you think you should write about it.
sticks to the schedule. quizzes are easy. if you don't make a certain grade on your first paper you are required to go to sage learning center and have someone review it. After that you set up an appointment to meet with him and go over the paper. Although you should do this with your first as well. Great teacher.
Great teacher! Very understanding and helpful. He likes talking about the subject a lot, and he expects the students to have their opinion too. You have to be a super slacker to get a bad grade in his class. A very interesting and passionate teacher! HIGHLY recommend his classes!!!
Mark is a Great teacher, from a student right out of high school, he's the kind of teacher you would like to have to get adjusted to college. Basically no homework, just quizzes online(easy). Fun class!
Probably one of the worse teachers I've had. All he does is repeat the same information each class. Makes you read stuff out loud like this is elementary school. Tries to find a secret meaning in everything. Horrible teacher I don't ever suggest anyone ever takes a class with him.
Easily one of the worst prof. I have ever had. Each of our exams were essays and he does not prepare you for them at all. The only thing we did in class was discussion and he expects you to study with out knowing what you're studying for. He talks WAY too much, and draws out every little detail of the most simplest things. I wouldn't suggest!
Disappointed with this teacher. I love reading old American classics but he just makes it seem so boring. He doesn't make much sense in his lectures and he doesn't seem to care about what you have to say. Listens but then goes off on his own terms. Wish it could've been better :(
Never once responded to emails or was available for help. He made this class so boring and unejoyable for me. He would always get side tracked telling useless personal stories. He would be late every class & hold us at least 7 min after. He makes you feel stupid when you have input & doesn't prep you well for exams. Dreaded every second of class.
A LOT of this class is participation. Don't expect to just hang out for 80 minutes. He's pretty long-winded, so he ends up doing a lot of the discussion himself. Hard to tell what he's looking for in tests. It's all interpretation but, he rewards originality. If you understand what the stories are about, you should have no problem making stuff up.
Good teacher, just pay attention & get involved. You're already Paying to take this course! He is one to speak with intelligence and he is also very understanding! Wish I could take him again
I'm in his creative writing class; listen to the reviews about him being incredibly long-winded. Talks about the Bible a lot (yikes), is homophobic (he's said some nasty remarks to me & other queer people during class) and hates his children (and discusses it at length IN CLASS). Definitely wouldn't recommend; every minute in his class is torture.
I am a confident writer ... Well I was until I took his class. He's a very tough grader, and with seemingly small mistakes that even he identified as small shouldn't have dropped my grade on a paper two letter grades. There are other professors available for this course section, I recommend taking one them instead!
Dr. Waters is awesome, well-educated, and passionate about his work. Pay attention, get involved, and ask questions. Papers are easy as long as you give yourself enough time to do them. People who say otherwise are just lazy. You won't find many teachers like him at MCC, so take him!
Writing has always been my strong suit and I usually don't get anything below a B+. Then Mark came along. I got a C on a personal narrative paper because I had minor errors in my source citing. I'm taking this course online and if you get anything below a B on the first paper you must visit the writing center before submitting the second paper.
Mark gives the freedom to write. I've never had an english teacher do this before. BUT the freedom to write comes with a price. He's a rather tough grader which can be frustrating throughout the semester, but I'm a better writer because of it. It's a college level class, he makes it college level worthy. Solid teacher.
Waters is an inspiring professor! No textbook, just selections from books and poems. He allows you to formulate your own ideas without telling you if you're correct. If you don't like to analyze literature this class is not for you.
Needs to work on his material for his courses.
He's a great guy and a good teacher.
I heard he was a tough grader but I did not run into that problem. I got high A's on both of my papers for the class and ended with a great grade. If you put in the effort you will be fine.
Mr. Waters is a okay teacher following the course outline. He is open to student questions and expects you to participate in class discussion. However, he is very rhetorical with abnormal words which leaves students confused when he is either asking a question or making points. The quiz's are easy and papers are acceptable as long as your detailed.
This teacher knocks off points even when you met the standards in what he is looking for... he just teaches at a community college like seriously.
Mediocre at best. He's a tough grader. Like seriously tough. He explains the expectations but then grades you harshly even if you meet the expectations. It's very confusing. The class was easy, but his grading was a nightmare.
This teacher is tough but reasonable. He requires Two full research papers plus a handful of quizzes throughout. I didnt do as well as I would have liked but its more on me than it is on him. As long as follow his suggestions and take advantage of the MCC writing center you will pass.
What I liked most about his class was that his requirements for the paper topic is really broad: so, we can basically write about anything we want. There are only a few things to do for the online class. The requirements for two papers are not that bad either. However, he doesn't count websites as valid sources.
Mr. Waters was a good teacher and is understanding. He is very clear on his expectations and as long as you go to class and do your work then this class should be a breeze for you. Extra credit was available and class participation is a grade. He creates a good and comfortable atmosphere
This class was all about reading and writing about yourself, so not much you can do wrong. Had many quizzes but they were pretty easy for the most part. Class was basically just talking about what we read, so make sure you read. There was no rubric for the writings, but was still easy to understand what he wanted.
English is my second language, so I was little scare at first, but I'm glad I took it. Dr. Waters gives lots of feed back. He will come to every student seat to make sure you understood the material or to make sure you are in the right track. He is kind and vey humble professor. Success depends on you because he trully gives his part.
Definitely not one of my favorite professors at mcc. Reached out multiple times to get help and feedback and he was very rude, not willing to help and left me without much info. Tried hard, always went to class but still somehow struggled. I went out of my way to learn and put in the effort but he couldnt do his end of being the professor. so sad.
An absolutely whack class. Theres nothing related to English in the content. We just watched videos about the corona virus and took quizzes over the videos. I didnt realize I was taking a corona virus class, I thought it was English. Very disappointed.
I really enjoyed Dr. Waters. He is a very nice guy and loves conversation during class. If you do all of your assignments, you are very likely to pass. He does't use the textbook a lot and will make you expand your thinking! I am taking him again next semester. He doesn't respond to emails though, which is frustrating.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He gives quizzes on politically-charged COVID-19 protocols and talks about how much he hates the vaccine instead of teaching any actual material. The entire grade is based off two research papers that he nitpicks for personal pet peeves he has in writing with badly explained rubrics for each.
It's genuinely baffling how this man has a doctorate in anything. 90% of class is dedicated to in-class discussion. However, it's really just Waters talking about what he likes about the reading and presenting extremely elementary concepts, and when students try to add anything more complex, he quickly steamrolls their idea. At least it's an easy A
Dr. Waters was my favorite professor as MCC. His class is a little difficult, however he makes sure to tell his students what he expects of them. In short, he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. But he wont just give you an A, you have to work for it. As long as you listen to his requirements for essays youll be peachy!
Dr. Waters is super laid back. The class is paper based, so get ready to write. There are few assignments in this course, but you need to work hard on them in order to pass. He also doesn't respond to emails or returns work in a timely fashion. He also puts little to no feedback on your work. Nice guy, poor instructor.
Dr. Waters seems somewhat strict from his lectures but he is actually understanding and flexible. We mostly read around 3 to 4 pages of writing and discuss. The time consuming stuff is the 2 4-8 page papers. The teacher explains everything clearly and if you don't understand, he would love for you to ask. His goal is for everyone to pass.
coolest professor I have ever had and I have been to 4 schools. If you care, he will care.
If you stop learning, you stop living.
Took his creative writing class in the fall of 2020. Guy was no Mr. Rogers but he did have some fascinating insight and advice. Plus, thanks to his assignment of submitting a story to the Skyway Writer's Competition, I ended up winning second place in the Drama category.
I never received feedback on my papers and I spent over a month on my final paper yet got a C. Doesn't seem to understand creative thinking or care about his student's improvement. I took the course online due to my busy schedule but was one of the courses I dreaded the most.
Extremely tough grader who nit-picks at very minor things. He didn't have a single assignment worth more than 200 points all semester then makes the final paper worth 2,000 points without even giving feedback on it. Very poor at communicating outside of class if you have a question as well. I do not recommend taking any of his courses.
Extremely judgemental and preachy.
I had a very hard time learning anything from his class. He just rambles for a really long time, going off on such extended tangents that by the time he's finished you forget what point he was even trying to make in the first place. On top of that he's always without fail at least a few minutes late and is super averse to technology.
Not sure why you only have to write 2 papers in the entire course. Not to mention they are worth an insane amount of points. I would not recommend
He graded the whole semester with two papers of 2,000 and 1,000 points and maybe 5 activities of 25-30 points. No extra credit, no flexibility. Do not recommend.
He's an alright teacher. He's nice and gives good feedback. The whole semester we technically only wrote 2 papers. One worth 500 points and the other 1,000. Attendance IS mandatory in his class. He will drop you a letter grade for every 2 times you miss. Overall, the class was not bad, but he does assign a lot of quizzes to do on your own.
Mark is a good professor overall he gives good feedback on essays and is very lenient on the due dates of online quizzes, although he is a tough grader when it comes to essays if you read the instructions of the assignment and follow them you'll be okay.
Tough grader, but the class is manageable if you put in the work. Use unstuck study and the free textbook to prepare for the heavy focus on papers. Be ready for little feedback.
Professor Waters is a great professor! He cares about work being done well, and about the personal academic growth of each individual. He emphasizes the importance of learning; that we are not just at college to "get by," but to learn. He is very winsome, and you can learn by listening. If you care about truly learning, he is the professor to take.
He is very strict about policies and doesn't respect the needs of his students
He was so boring to listen to and would literally talk for the entire class about absolutely nothing. Horrible at using tech, and would not let you use your computer or phone in class. Would also make you print out everything to turn in. Deadlines for every assignment was not clear at all, many time the whole class wouldn't know something was due.
Not a bad class, Waters himself is pretty nice but a weirdo. Defended certain actions and people he probably shouldn't have. Personally will not be taking again.
Pros: Class was a breeze, ended w/ 99%. Very easy as long as you show up & DO ALL QUIZZES! Cons: No due dates on assignments so they don't show up in the "to do" section on Canvas. I just did all of them the first month so I didn't have to worry abt them later on (short&easy). Mark is monotone but nice, & lectures are boring. Always bring handbook!
