To much time spent explaining simple concepts to freshmen students.
Not afraid to break a sweat. His class got me into the whole philosophy scene.
Excellent teacher, makes the student really feel like a philosopher
Inherently difficult material taught by a brilliant man...eye & mind candy.

Awesome, get to know him
Super super hard class!!!
he'll kick your butt, but he's a great person. so brilliant. get to know him.
Course is challenging. Teaches u how to be a philosopher. Always willing to help
His lectures are about 10% important information and the rest is just BORING
Great teacher, class is hard.U'll learn to think like a phil. He's damn sexy too!
Only friendly if you are one of those who always have something to say.
Really hard, the lectures don't even really apply to what you are tested on.
good class, go to lecture, good learnin, speak up he will like you better
A lot of work, study HARD for the final. Great teacher though- very helpful
GREAT teacher AND class if you try your best and GET HELP
Enthusiastic teacher. Great guy. Still talk to him years after taking his course
Very friendly. He still says hi to me when I pass him on campus.
Nice guy, but who cares. You will learn very little in his class. Lectures mean nothing. Digresses far too much and does not focus the lecture to help comprehend the material. His tests are ridiculous and also don't aid with comprehension. Never again.

If you want to learn philosophy,DO NOT take this class! Alot of reading about nothing interesting!!!
Nice guy; though he is very unclear, and notes were disorganized. He grades tests really HARD!
Greatest Professor I know. His knowledge of the ancient greeks is a bit freeky, as he just might know more about Aristotle than his wife, however the best teacher I have had.
Very nice, and attentive. But hard work, lots of reading. More about history and lots of info. All in all, he graded my work easily and I aced the class with average effort.
Great teacher, very hard class. Fortunately, he is so enthusiastic about the material he teaches, he makes the class very intriguing and enjoyable.
Great teacher. He is extremely enthusiastic and really wants to hear what his students think. His classes are fun and his lectures are very entertaining. Most importantly though, is that he goes out of his way to make himself available after class
his lectures are unclear at times, however he is more than willing to make himself available to his students for clarification or advising. his knowledge in the subjects at hand is incredible, so you get a lot of information.
A doll! He's handsome and helpful and you can really see your growth within his class. Difficult but worth it! As an option, consider taking it credit/no credit.
Cool teacher. The class is tough 'cause the whole grade is based on 6 tests. Might be better as a credit/no credit class.
this guy loves philosophy,he makes it easy...tells you exactly what is on the tests...memorize the little amount of definitions given and ask questions fequently...there are six test but they are easy... not necessary to take this class cr/nocr if you are interested in philsophy...easy A if you try
The term paper can be pretty damn tough, but if you grab an article well ahead of the due date - by several weeks - and talk to him about it, then it is doable. Do not schedule your semester so that the term paper in this class and another paper in another class are due the same day. It'll be hell.
This man can speak about ancient western philosophy for 2 hours and 40 minutes and still feel like he didn't say enough. He is incredibly knowledgeable of the material he teaches and expresses his love for the subject outwardly! He makes the time fly right by, and the class is an easy A.
Nothing short of awesome. He has an amazing ability to get everybody involved and excited about what he teaches. Very animated, very exciting, and very intelligent. His soul piercing gaze cannot be ignored. A very fair grader. You get what you deserve. Take this guy.
Make sure you know what Philo is before you enter this class. I had a hard time at first but once I taught myself his teaching style then the class was fun to go to and test were very helpful in learning and he gives you what you deserve.
This class is tough! Very energetic but the class itself is boring. You have to go to every class and the final is extremly hard! I finished with a B because he does grade fairly!
A wonderful educator who makes you think in new ways, isn't as concerned that you understand the actual meaning of the text as he wants to you grasp the concepts of great philosophers. You certainly need to buy the books and attend class our you're going to have it tough. Oh, and he's fiiiiiiine!
Super cool, very helpful, intelligent prof. My favorite class ever. Makes things interesting, clear and he's just way cool. Take this class, you won't be sorry. Easy tests, just do the reading and go to class.
best class i have taken to date! Not the easiest class but worth the trouble. Mark is an awesome professor who wont stop untill you understand the material. Do the readings and you should be fine!
Super nice guy. He knows his stuff and can talk for hours on one question. The class was mainly memorization with good material. Definitley a good class
he knows exactly what hes talking about and he gets you incredibly interested in everything youre learning about. definitely have to pay attention to get a good grade, but as long as you get a basic concept down for yourself you're totally chill... lots of study time, and you gotta read for sure. id take a class with wheeler just for his enthusiasm

The best teacher and the most interesting class at SDSU. Yes, the class is tough and there are a lot of quizzes/tests, but he's super easy, as well as helpful with the material that will be on the tests. I loved this class!
intense class, hard work, but worth it. got to keep up with reading, valuable notes and definitions for the exams are given only in class. there are about 6 exams total where all of your grade comes from.
this is one of the best prof. at state. hes really helpfula and is the smartest man on earth.

Very hard class but great professor. For the girls: he is soooo cute!
This was an awesome class. This guy is a genius. The lectures can be a little much sometimes but he has a strong grasp of the subject matter. The readings were great but a bit tedious. His test are difficult if you don't study. The paper is easy if you go over it with him. If this is your major, take him.
He pushes you to the limit as far as the tests. However, the subject matter is extremely fastinating. I am a History major and learning this stuff is fun but this is not for the faint of heart for this is academic WARP DRIVE! You can tell this guy loves his job and would talk about this stuff beyone the 2 hours and 40 mins.
this guy is crazy and weird. take notes and read assigned material. you get like 300+ points every time you go to class and you take quizes. but make sure you get help for the paper, because they grade super hard.
he's a good guy. really passionate about philosophy. sometimes he is a little bit crazy and speaks really fast, but for the most part he was understandable. Do not take his class if you plan on skipping a bunch of classes. Attendance was worth a ridiculous amount of points.
Yes, the class was difficult. Attendance is required and that is what hurt a lot of people. Overall, this class was really not as hard as people exaggerate it to be. All you have to do is keep up with the readings, even if you dont understand it. I admit I struggled and was frustrated at times, but just go to his TA's for help. Theyre super useful.
This class was terrible! I learned nothing and was confused the whole way through. Wheeler, although very intelligent and a good speaker he spoke above everyones head as if we have our PhD in Phil as well. The test were ridiculously hard and subjectively graded. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
class was so easy. lectures were extremely borringgg.. reading was hard but tests were easy. take this class with people you know print all the quizzes use on midterm and print the midterm, it was the same as the final i passed with a B and didnt try that hard.
Hot and sexy. MMMMM.... Oh yeah the class was hard, but it made my world. I love philosophy.
I took this class with the honors pgrm(meaning there was ten people in my class) Attendance is mandatory with all the points you can get. If you go and do one question, get it wrong, you get 0/100 for the day. I found this class confusing especially when he went off topic then later tested you on what we didn't talk about bc he went off topic
Never really understood anything in lectures, really confusing. However somehow i ended up with an A in the class. His TA's are super helpful and i highly recommend going to them for the final essay. You must go to class because you will have to answer a bunch of multiple choice questions every day
Such a passionate teacher. One of my favorite teachers I've ever had. He is so willing to help anyone who wants it. The class was really hard if you don't know how to write argumentatively. You must read the book. Quizzes every class. If you really want to learn about Philosophy this is the class to take. An amazing person to learn from.
two midterms, a final, and one paper grade wise. he does clicker questions EVERY class and its graded on correctness. i didnt understand a word he said all semester but got a B in the class.
Overall a great teacher. Very passionate about Philosophy and when he lectures, it's like he's conversing with you so the lectures are interesting. Clicker quizzes every day, and are always based on the readings - sometimes from the class before lecture.
This prof is VERY passionate about philosophy, and will help you comprehend the material if you do the reading. 2 midterms, a final, and a final paper. Tough class, but if phil interests you, go for it. The class also helps you understand logical arguments (which is helpful for various fields). Great prof, tough class, the A took a bit of work...
He is a great teacher. He makes the class very interesting because he is so passionate. Gave me a new way to look at life. Hard class and I only got a B. Tests every day with a clicker and a good amount of reading every night. 3 major tests and a paper are main points. Gives a considerable amount of extra credit. GREAT CLASS!
must put in lots of work, but if you're into the subject its definitely worth it. readings are a must, do study guide questions prior to exam.
I was in the class where the student made the comments that you should not take Professor Wheeler. I must respectively disagree. Wheeler was upset because the students were not doing the work and he decided to make the students do the work by making them turn in the assignments. Wheeler is a great teacher with a passion for teaching. Takethisclass.
Wheeler speaks very fast and his class runs at the same pace. If you want to take this class then you better be prepared to read the book. Open book, open note tests that are really hard. I got an A but i worked my a$$ off.
You need to do the assigned reading, it's hard to grasp but as you go on it makes sense. Go to class & Office Hours he's more than willing to help you out. Extra Credit is available so take advantage of it. Interesting class. Moreover, he know's what he's talking about
Wheeler is passionate, profound, and sometimes very intense. He sincerely cares about his students and wants them to learn as much as possible. The class isn't structured somewhat loosely as there are no tests to study for, only papers. Expect to pursue whatever interests you most, and don't be afraid to contribute to the discussions.
He was very passionate about philosophy. A very hard class to grasp though. It is a difficult subject and he does not do much to help you understand. 2 midterms one final and one essay. Tests are curved but extremely difficult.
Best teacher I had at SDSU. Not the easiest of classes but not the hardest. He loves the subject and if you show interest in the class and any motivation to learn it will be an easy grade and very rewarding for yourself. I wish all my teachers were as passionate about their classes as Wheeler
Do NOT take this professor. He is head of the philosophy department and this intro class is much more like a upper division class. 66% of my class failed the final because it was ridiculoulsy difficult. Tons of work and he assumes you are a philosophy major pretty much. Worst class I've taken. There are three written test and a paper.
Great course material, awesome class. He will help you with anything you need, and wants you to succeed.
Wheeler is easily one of the most passionate & inspirational teacher I've ever had. He definitely wants his students to engage in their academics & life in general. With that being said this class isn't the easiest. You jump right in wo having knowing much. Not to mention the readings aren't exactly a walk in the park. Visit office hours often
One of the hardest, but most interesting classes I have taken. You need to have the textbook because he asks questions about the assigned reading every class. He also puts questions on the tests that refer to the readings. There are 2 midterms and a final that are all open book and note, and one final essay due at the end of the semester.
He is a very passionate and inspirational professor who knows exactly what he's talking about. This man could easily be one of the smartest people I know. The class is indeed tough but it's not hard to get a good grade if you visit office hours often and read the assigned texts. He is definitely a professor you want to take.
There is no doubt Wheeler is passionate about philosophy and his students, but this class is not easy what so ever. He is interesting when giving lectures, but you have to go to class to grasp the material. You have to work really hard to pass this class.
Great class, the readings are really important when it comes to the tests. If you know how to form a clear philosophical argument you will do good on the tests. and if you go to class then you will know how to do that. he will help you if you ask and he is very passionate. overall good class, philosophy is just hard to grasp in general.
readings are extremely tough, but its note expected to understand them. The class isn't based on what's right or wrong, but fully based on YOUR philosophical thoughts. You are expected to come up with your own opinions and beliefs. Rather than teaching you, he lets you teach yourself. 2 midterms, 1 final, 1 final paper. open book/note/laptop tests
He is very passionate about philosophy and it is clear that he loves what he is doing. He is eager to help if you ask questions in class or go to his office hours. The tests are somewhat challenging but as long as you clearly explain your reasoning you should be okay. There is a short reading before each class.
It's a tough class because of the material, not him necessarily. Where he is challenging is his tests and paper are comprised of the student making their own arguments and using other philosophers to support it. So, the class isn't about regurgitating other philosophers. You've got to read the material before class! He'll call on you so stay alert!
Make sure you know how to construct arguments and be logical in your reasoning. Exams are open book/note. Come to class with questions about the readings because he is always happy to answer them!
While the tests are fairly straightforward, the way he grades them is confusing in that he doesn't correct you he just gives you the points he thinks you deserve without explanation. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you come to class he will like you better and this could help you to get a better score on the exams.
A nice guy. Very intelligent and very "artsy" so avoid if you don't like that kind of thing. Read and come to class with questions (lectures are based on questions). Not that hard of a grader but expects you to do the work asked of you. Cares a lot about philosophy and about his students. Tries to acomodate students and to make lectures interesting
He is a great philosophic professor!!! How to think things critically, how to develop your onw opinion on diferent stuffs, that's what he teaches. you should read the articals that he suggests because that's what's really interesting and worthy to be read.
His class is interesting. He is good at guide you though to a new direction, and improve your concept on the world of philosophy.
While he wasn't my favorite professor, attending class clearly showed me that he has a genuine passion for the field. Your grade is based on two exams, two papers, and the final. Attendance is mandatory via courskey and excess abscesses will be detrimental to your grade. As long as you do the reading and show up, you will pass.
If you are looking for an easy GE class and have no interest in philosophy, I would recommend avoiding this class. Wheeler is a good philosophy teacher for those who care about the subject and are willing to do the readings prior to every class. Philosophy is only as fun as you make it. I personally had trouble staying awake in this class.
Wheeler was really interesting and a great professor that really cares about his students and the subject. If you're actually interested in philosophy definitely take his class. However, if you are looking for an easy GE then don't. the exams are essay exams and there's two papers that really took a lot of effort. not too hard of a grader though.
This wasn't the class for me this semester. I just wanted to take it for credit, but if you really are passionate about philosophy, please take Wheeler's class. He's heavy on class participation and will often get antsy if no one speaks up. However, I wish we spent more time practicing how to argue because that's what his tests are based on.
Professor Wheeler is very passionate about philosophy. I took this just to fulfill one of my credits, but I honestly learned a lot. He takes attendance via Coursekey and his class is based on how well you can argue. There are readings from the textbook, but it is possible to pass without doing all of the readings. Attend class and ask for help!
Professor Wheeler is awesome, welcoming, caring, and truly wants to expand your knowledge of philosophy. With that said, you also have to want to expand your knowledge of philosophy because the class is still pretty demanding. The only way someone wouldn't do well in this class is by not trying hard, which to be blunt, is on them. Overall awesome!
He is the head of the philosophy department so he doesn't care if his students don;t get it. His lectures are pointless and barely apply to the tests. He makes you buy both the textbook and course key (attendance) yet it is not even a part of your grade. Unless you really love and understand philosophy, you will HATE this class. I dreaded going.
The class syllabus looks overwhelming at first but it's not. Class is graded on 3 short papers and a 12 page min research paper. With a final online which is a repeat of the quizzes you take during the semester. Every quiz you fail is -1 pt from your final exam. He grades hard but gives you the opportunity to improve your grade even if it's an A-
Class was pointless. The grades are 2 papers and 3 tests, he won't teach you anything that is on it because he expects you to learn it from the powerpoint outside of class time. Lectures were on the readings not how to do the papers or tests. Papers and tests were patterns of argument and how to use it. Spend office hours with him and u will get A.
Wheeler is an interesting professor, very passionate about Philosophy. Many of my classmates struggled with this class but it is attainable to get an A if you put in the work. Grade consists of 3 exams and 2 papers- work your butt off on these, especially the papers. Always has office hours, TAKE ADVANTAGE! He will help you immensely on papers.
Generally, he's a good professor. He cares about philosophy a lot, and his lectures can be really interesting. But his tests are really complex and feel unrelated to the topics discussed in class. The first test was completely shocking because you had to provide logical arguments to each question, but we were never taught that in class.
Prof. Wheeler could careless if you learned something from him. I felt his classes were a waste of my time, energy, and life overall. He teaches nothing! you just go to class and listen to an old, crazy, loud, and egocentric white freak. How can this (wheeler) be teaching at a masters level in homeland security? when he taught 0 on the subject.
