If you have the chance and need this class, take him. His exams are almost too easy.
This class was fun and interesting. His exams are easy, and he usually gives extra credit.
pro whitters is probably one of the greatest professors out there. his teaching method that combines a 10 minute review of the previous class was very helpful. take this class! its required!!
if ya don't get an 'A' its pathetic! He is such an easy grader and a super nice guy. He's soooo tall... kinda reminds me of a bean sprout though... but he is a great prof!
He's so tall! Very intersting class, I would like to take another of his courses. Exams are easy.
If Jesus really saves, he should have saved me from this class.
Great guy. A bit biased, but he wears it on his sleeve, so you can take it with a grain of salt. He seems more concerned with actually having people learn the material than grading.
Reviews previous lecture at the beginning of class, which is nice. BIASED. Way too many people crammed into a small classroom.
no comment
Very good teacher!
V easy class. Tests straight from notes. If you go to class you'll do well. Study guides structure from tests. Nice guy.
He's terrible, you better be a Christian if you want to take this class. WAY BIASED!
through the whole semester i felt like we reviewing for what we would be learning about eventually. we spent about two days on each civilzation. overall nice guy but should stick to teaching from his major.
His lectures are quite thorough. I've not yet noticed the blatant "bias" that several have complained about, much less experienced any negative experiences as a result. He's mentioned a few times that he is a Christian, but generally only within the context of the subject matter.
when you make puns about Jesus, you are a loser! whoever wrote that comment has no integrity and obviously deserved a bad grade in the class! He is a good doctor and is very helpful
He is a bit biased, but not excessivly. He has his opinions, but listens to the students as well. Good balance of experience and facts in lectures. Excellent prof.
The best teacher I've ever had.
Lectures are okay, but tend to get very boring, especially if you take his night class. Tests are very hard and dont seem to come from the book or his notes. If you dont know his opinions, then you dont do well on exams. I'd recommend another professor if you can!
Test questions can be hard but attendance counted for 30% and that helps. I love history but even he bored me, tends to ramble on about certain unimportant things and isnt always very clear and doesnt know material very well if its outside his specialty. Hes easy but very boring
This guy is a straight up ****. He did not know his material and he referred everything back to his Catholic background , I took the class to learn about the 5 main religions of the world, not Mark Whitters take on the 5 main religions of the world. Take this class with an atheist. Not to mention, he always tries to speak in languages such as
i thought his class was exstremely easy, and wasn't offended by him at all. he admits that he wasn't too sure about some stuff, but i didn't think he was an ass about it. he also set up stufy groups before any exams.
his class was ok, but the tests were extrememly tricky even if you studied the notes day and night before the test. he wasnt exactly clear on all the stuff he taught. overall i would say the class is ok but i wouldnt recommend taking it with him if you can help it. i ended up with a C and i studied all the time so you make the call.
I love history and I'm a history minor...HATED this class. The ONLY reason I got an A was because the TA helped us out soo much! He had a copy of the test and made it so much more clear what Whitters expected. All we learned about was how Whitters viewed ancient civilizations, he talks A LOT in other languages, and mentions Catholicism A LOT!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. His tests are the hardest you will ever encounter, and I'm an honors student. He words them so they are confusing and there is a time limit. The only good thing about this class is that attendance is 30% of your grade. All he talks about is how HE views history and how everything reverts back to Christianity.
He is charismatic and easy to listen to. The information he provides is interesting and applicable to everyday life.
The class wasn't impossible, but be prepared to study if you want a good grade. He admits to not knowing everything, which is good, but sometimes he doesn't seem clear on the things he does know. The tests are tricky, but if you attend the study groups they help a lot. Seems a bit biased on Christianity, but he admits that in class.
the tests are almost entirely off of his notes
His comparative study of religion class is horrible. He reads off a powerpoint everyday. His tests are impossible. The questions are not objective, they are based on how he feels and what he thinks of other religions NOT on facts. I don't believe he knows his history. He is boring and you will regret taking his course. Please trust me.
I thought he was great. He made the class very interesting and I think did a good job of being objective. His tests are quite easy, and I really enjoy the way he structures the class, he makes it very easy to take notes. I'd recommend his religions class to anyone.
Horrible teacher, and very hard tests
Very Hard class. Tests not objective, based on what he thinks. Some information given out was wrong. Hard to take good notes through his lectures, even though he uses a powerpoint. I would recommend not taking religion with him.
He is a fun teacher. I learned a lot from his class, he really knows what he’s talking about and is helpful. His tests are challenging, the questions are almost open-ended. You really have to think about them, it’s not just simple who did this at what time. If you come to class everyday, read & DO THE REVIEW SHEETS it makes tests a lot easier!
terrible. i don't really care if he wants to get married or not, yet he talked about it almost every class. take religion with someone else, this guy is a joke.
Lectures were incredibly boring, and he rambled on and on about 1 thing - and it never ended up on a test. His tests were ridiculously hard, even if you always came to class, took notes, and studied with the TA. Mark Whitters is a horrible teacher. He should seriously reconsider his teaching style as well as his grading methods.
He's an okay teacher. Very hard tests. Boring class, boring book, boring information. I've fallen asleep in every class and it's only based on tests. His information he gives us is not what ends up on the tests. He treats this like a 400 level class, not a 100 level. Very hard teacher. He's a nice person, but I recommend not taking the class.
He doesn't know what the hell he's talking about most of the time. He has his own OPINIONS on history, doesn't follow the book, and constantly contradicts himself. He's always talking about history is unclear, how you can't be sure of anything cuz everything is so ambiguous. You never know what you're supposed to know for exams!!

He was a good teacher. His Lectures were all powerpoint and posted online so you could follow along with him. He does know what he's talking about and alot of what he talks about is personal testomony. Good Class!
good teacher, good content, easy if you do the work. if you do bad in this class you are either not doing your work, or just dumb. i would take him again for sure.
As someone who loves theology, I don't recommend this class to anyone like myself. Whitters has a personal bias of being a priest and very involved in the Catholic church, and his subtle mockery of other religions in his lecture is appalling. He also assumes that every student in his class is Christian unless they tell him or he sees otherwise.
I wouldn't recommend him. He assumes that everyone pretty much knows this stuff and doesn't explain things well. You NEVER use the book, he doesn't go by the book anyways so I wouldn't recommend wasting your money. The only thing that you will need is the TIME magazine because some test questions come from there.Tests are HARD and worded funny.
Professor Whitters is a good instructor. You must attend lecture and take good notes if you want to pass this course. Tests come mainly from lecture. Offers interesting stories about his life experiences. I enjoyed his class and I would take him again.
This class was terrible. I learned nothing, because the teacher didn't expect much out of anyone. He lets his Christian bias in on everything he teaches, and the worst part about that was there were times when he was flat out wrong. He dismissed other opinions as incorrect facts, and it was a very unpleasant class. There was no work though.
teaches more about religion than history, you can pass pass the class easily if all you want it the credit for a pre-req but if you want to learn about civilization i wouldent take him
Prof. Whitters, is an extremely intelligent man. If only he could keep his thoughts straight and his mind from wandering. There were a number or useless stories that were told in class, and at times he seems to be rambling. His tests are quite difficult because of the wordings of the questions, and attendance is almost mandatory because you need th
I had him for hist 100 and 101 one of the best professors here. His tests are short and easy with EC as long as you pay attention and take notes. Powerpoints and study guides are online. I have learnd so much and he is really helpful I would highly recomend taking his classes.
He tells you right away that nobody could teach history of religion without a bias, and taking from an atheist would still be biased. He gives a fair interpretation in my opinion. Easy class, interesting and easy to follow lectures, very nice guy, someone I go back to for help with my other history clases now.
I was somewhat disappointed that there were so many lectures. I wish more could have been done activity-wise to get the class involved. You don't really need the text book for the class so long as you follow lectures. You only really need the Time Magazine. We had reviews before each test that were very helpful. He is a pretty nice guy, also.
This class was an easy A. All you have to do is attend the boring lectures and write down everything he says. Go to the review sessions before the test b/c then you don't really need to study for the 5, 30 multiple choice question tests. Don't buy the book. We used the Time Magazine for one or two essay questions on the tests. Not worth buying.
he is a boring teacher. all he does is lecture from his boring overheads and he likes to break the class into groups to discuss about the current topic. he bores his audience during his lectures.review sheets for tests take a long time to do and some of the information isnt even on the test.his tests are really hard and doesnt curve tests.
I actually enjoyed this class and teacher. I got an A+ in the class. As long as you study the material and work hard, this class should be a breeze. I learned a lot from him. Extra credit is offered as well!
This guy is awesome. He knows his stuff for sure-- very intelligent. Great at communicating important points, too. I look forward to his class every monday and wednesday.
If you don't go to class, you'll probably fail. All of his MC tests (which always have extra credit) are from his lectures. He's a very nice guy; though his review sheets are lengthy and not overly helpful. Just take good notes and study them, you'll be fine.
Was worried bc im acc major 1st his class, but its a breeze. If you follow the lectures, take notes and can answer 80% of the ?'s on the review sheets you will pass. Quizzes about every other week, does go fast but just study the notes. He's a very nice professor. Definitely recommend.
Lectures are boring but all texts are based off of them. Whitters is a very nice guy and his texts a fairly simple and there is usually extra credit. This class is an easy A
I love this professor! It totally changed my views about religion. IMO, it was fun going to his class, even though they are just lectures. If you are really interested, it's enjoyable. The tests were decent, not easy and not hard. If you study, you'll pass. I would definitely recommend him. Nice guy.
Great respectful man! Very kind. Class period is used totally on interesting lectures & small (2-5min) class discussions. There's a test on each religion (5). He gives you 30 Questions, but only requires you to get 23-24 correct! (2) on-lone assignments(paragraphs) & (2) Papers (2pages. all asnwers to test are on the prinatble powerpoints!
Whitters is a great professor. He is not biased towards any of the religions discussed. His tests are fair and the study guides he provides are extremely beneficial, so do them. He is very passionate and knowledgeable and asks students questions to assure comprehension of the material, not to single one out or avoid doing his job.
Really didn't want to write anything. But he is a good professor and the way he taught this class is really fun.
He is a great teacher. His lectures are easy to understand. He obviously loves the topic he teaches. He is just an all around nice guy!
Teacher is a nice guy but if you do not like writting with correct and I mean super correct grammar than dont take this class. He is more like an english history teacher
Too much emphasis is placed on the Huntington "Clash of Civlizations" theory and not enough on actual history. Information is vague, sometimes contradictory, or even flat out wrong. Tendencies to over-explain simple concepts and skip important ones. Mandatory groups with only a minute to come to preconceived conclusions.
He is very far to the right, but very, very smart.
Great person and even better teacher. He's religious but not biased. Really knows his stuff and his class is really relaxed. Test are easy if you attend every class.
Very nice guy but unorganized at times. Tests aren't easy but they're not hard either. Do the study guides. At review sessions we' learn that he tells other sections more information that other sections so this made it very confusing as to what would be on the test seeing as how he uses the same exam for every class. More of an English teacher
Professor Whitters is a nice guy. He does not explain assignments well and marks you down for not doing it correctly. He seemed quite unorganized. I was extremely excited for this class, but I feel I did not learn much of anything. He goes off topic and is not very clear in lectures. Exams were somewhat difficult and had things not really covered.
He is a great professor, you just have to attend class everyday and take notes. If he mentions something a couple of times is it going to be on the test. He takes attendance everyday, but allows the class to decide what time attendance is taken. Very easy going and enthusiastic I highly recommend taking him for Comparative Study of Religion.
Very good professor, he is passionate and well prepared for class. Hopefully you'll have someone in your class who likes to participate by answering his questions because he will ask it over and over if no one responds.
He is a really nice and smart man. I really enjoyed the class at first. I got over 100% on the first test, Then on the second test I got a B. I wanted A on the next test so I studied for over 14 hours for the third test and ended up getting a D. This frustrated me to the point where I had to withdraw from the class. Only for history lovers.
This instructor was very confusing. The review sessions were literally the first ten minutes on exam days! He didn't seem interested in helping his students succeed. This class isn't that hard it's just the professor. So if you have to take this class AVOID taking it with Whitters!
Go to his classes! They're actually interesting! (And if you don't go, you'll fail the exams.) Most of his classes are discussion-oriented around his topics. He's friendly, helpful, and prepared. If you take good notes and pay attention during all of the classes, you won't even need to open the book.
I took this class to learn about religions, since I have no background in any. Everything is Christian based & if you know that you'll be fine, I felt clueless majority of the classes. He asks lots of questions in class & if you don't have the exact answer he is demeaning toward you. In all writing assignment make sure you give specific examples.
HIST 102 Western Civilization, 1648-World War II: We played these really complicated games using expensive game books (that you absolutely must buy). He's never done the games before, so he had no idea what he was doing, and therefor no one in class knew what we were doing. For the sake of future classes, I hope he never does the game again.
I feel like his expectations were a bit high for a 101 class, but it wasn't terrible. There was a TON of information he wanted you to know for the tests (long video lectures and textbook), so I just had all of the info in front of me while taking the test. If you are lazy and expect an easy A without doing any work, don't take this class.
Great professor
He is a wonderful teacher and I really enjoyed the class. If I had to I would take it again
Great teacher. He gives extra credit on each test, so there isn't a reason why anyone can't get an A. Show up to class and you will be fine. You don't even need the books.
Hard class but he was fair with grading and always curved the tests and offered extra credit, you can get a good grade if you work for it
Professor Whitters is a great instructor. This class had powerpoint lectures, a couple of assignments and multiple choice tests. I printed the powerpoint and then took notes as I was watching the powerpoint. The book helped with the assignments. He is extremely clear about the directions and requirements. I will take another class with him.
Professor Whitters is very clear on what is due and when. He usually gives ample time to complete these assignments. He lectures a lot but he makes it interesting and has many of value things to say. He is understanding and knows that things occur which may hinder school work and is accommodating.
He teaches in a live action roleplaying style that is just great. If you have to take a history and you hate history this is the class for you. Now if you don't like speaking in front of others this class might be rough. As easy as it is you do have to be there and participate. It is a very in class and speaking orated class.
Dr. Whitters is very, kind, helpful and has a lot of fun with his students. His interactive history class is played out like a game of D&D. You are given a role in history and have to read, research and write speeches in your role. You have to come to class and participate! If you don't want to present, talk, and debate, this class isn't for you.
Dr. Whitters is one of the most respectful and intelligent instructors at EMU. He has inspired me to respect religious diversity and understand those who believe differently than me. I would take him again if I could. Classroom discussions are important and exams are fair. He values your opinion! Share it! Get ready to learn a lot!
If you're planning on taking HIST 109 online, don't. The software that is used is tedious and not worth much. It's very easy to do poorly on the online course-ware site.
I took Reacting to the Past, while unaware of the structure. This is not a lecture/test class. You take the role of a character for the duration of a game. You do not have to be great at speaking or acting, because he mainly considers your written speech and position paper. He thoroughly grades papers and gives elaborate feedback. He is nice.
clearly knows what he is talking about; very interesting to listen to
I was unaware of the structure of the class and found out quickly that you were a character in a "game" now that's all fine and dandy but when it comes to turning in your papers you write on a position you took in the game the professor allows students to grade them. the final is ridiculous and he refuses to go over exam questions
Ridiculous amount of work for a 101 class. Records himself lecturing (very poor quality audio) without any transcript of what is said, so prepare to waste hours watching these awful videos. Tests are very difficult and discussion prompts expect a lot out of you. Advice: RELAX, Professor: THIS IS ONLY HISTORY 101! Do not take!
Mr. Whitters is my favorite professor. I am finishing up his Comparative Study of Religions class and he is very interesting to listen to. As a Jewish person, I was worried that he (a Catholic person) would not properly teach other religions including my own but he is very respectful! You do have to participate in/come to class to do well!
Professor Whitters is a very intriguing and intelligent man. He clearly knows what he teaches and has a passion for it. For class, all you need to do is take good notes and do the test reviews for an easy A. He is a Catholic conservative and seems to be swayed here and there when it came to certain aspects about Islam, but I did not mind.
The entire class relies on discussions and tests, but the grading criteria for discussions is unclear and his test questions have multiple correct answers. Says one thing in his lectures and then marks it wrong on the test. Terrible. Don't take it unless you already know about World History
Marks Whitters is my favorite teacher that I have ever had ever. He doesn't jive with every kind of student - if you love having a good connection and discussion based lecture, this approachable guy is for you. Is one of the most intelligent street and book wise people I have ever met. Doing research with him next year. Would take again and again.
He is an amazing professor who will answer any question you have and hello you through the reacting to the past game. Be ready to come to every class possible, and do your reading.
It would not be a good recommendation. This is not a history class, it is instead history according to Mark. While the book is required, it is not useful during the tests. Mark will disagree with the book multiple times and cause confusion in the tests. Many of his lectures are not useful for the tests either. Would not recommend taking the class.
If you can take a 'Reacting to the Past' class with him, do it. This class was unconventional; there were no lectures, instead, the class played 3 different historically based roleplaying games that were mostly student led. Grade is based entirely on speeches/papers and participation, and the work load was generally light for our class.
Grades as if this is a 400 level class. Lectures are all online, he forgets the point he's making or tangents into a new one, says "um" too many times to count, and homework becomes available and due over the weekend. He does not observe University breaks.
I took his class because i just needed one more elective and I thought this class would be easy. WRONG. His class is very not what you think a 100 level class would be. He talks so much about things that are not on the exams. You can tell he is passionate about his teaching. HOWEVER, the exams are horrible and the readings are confusing.
Do not take him online!!!! Doesn't reply to emails and no help when asking how to study for quizzes!!
His teaching style (in history class at least) is not the usual lecture and exam style. It is more of a speech and debate class actually. It is more work than usual for a gen ed, but as long as you spend about an hour a week preparing for the class you will do just fine. Pretty lenient on grading too.
DO NOT TAKE HIM ONLINE, DOES NOT EXPLAIN ANYTHING
I thought I could submit a late assignment but turns out, no. The online submission just kicked me out so I couldnt turn in a bunch of 2-5 point assignments but everything was Google-searchable and the textbook was easy to understand and read.
Dr. Whitters & coaches are extremely helpful and kind about writing strengths/weaknesses, and help outside of class. 1 textbook and canvas has all other source material, you will probably need to read a fair bit to "win." You do six 3-5page papers graded fairly, unless you choose to do a play/poem/etc, and your attendance is also graded.
If Im being honest, I kinda wanted to drop this class at first. I was struggling with mental health and after letting him know, he was extremely understanding. Though I am not big on speeches or history, I got into it. Not only do you bond with your peers, you also truly learn the material rather than just dose off. Kind of difficult but very fun.
If you are looking for an easy A class - this is not the one. This was by far the hardest 100 level class I have ever taken. Dr. Whitters has like 7 PhD's and is way to smart to be teaching this class. I am a student with a 3.85 GPA and can't stress how difficult this class was. If you want an online challenge, go ahead and take it.
Do not take this professor if you are expecting an easy A for a gen ed--this course is quite difficult and a lot of work. Out of all the classes I had this semester, this was definitely the hardest. Also, be aware that you will have to continue the course throughout spring break, as he does not observe university breaks.
this professor is super hard grader and class is okay just use the textbooks and study and make sure to turn in all assignments and make sure read all that he says and he is super strict and really does add things to test that isn't studied be ready for that in test I would recommend either take a different class or a different teacher
Pretty work heavy for a 101 class. His exams rely on you remembering obscure facts from the big textbook with little guidance. The other parts rely on his lectures, which are of low quality. He's pretty anal about the threaded discussions, expecting people to bring "new topics" when there is only so much to work with. He also acts condescendingly.
Dr. Mark Whitters is a master of his craft and he will expect the same from his students. His examination materials are based upon concepts rather than verbatim regurgitation of the provided learning material. He is fair in his grading methods and an A is possible with some extra study hours, but avoid if possible, buckle up if you cant.
This professor needs to relax on being so hard on about the essays and about the quizzes. The stuff he talks about in lectures have nothing to do in quizzes. . You write an essay exactly explaining the question, and he still likes to mark you wrong and make you feel dumb. Overall a bad way of teaching and too hard of a class for the subject.
I adore Dr. Whitters. His class was much harder than expected: I did the 6 week course. I told him I was struggling, so we met over zoom to discuss what I needed help with, and he even changed grading criteria to be more generous to discussion posts. He really loves what he does and you can tell. Hardest level 100 I've taken.
I loved his class. He is very educated and bias-free BUT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE NOTES DURING LECTURES. I had two exams and a group project about Islam for the final exam. The exams are tricky, but as long as you're paying attention to the lectures, you should be fine. There was no homework, and I had to buy a book. Overall, he was a great professor.
This class is no easy A, but if you engage with the material and use helpful study tools like unstuckstudy, you can succeed. The professor is passionate but the grading is tough. Attend lectures, do the readings, and be prepared for a challenge.
Professor for this class was very knowledgeable, but the assignments were hard. The tests a lot of the time had nothing to do with the readings/lecturers and they were worded to confuse. I would spend hours doing all of the readings and watching the lectures to get Cs on my exams. For an 100 level class, I felt like the workload was ridiculous.
