Organized, clear, reasonable workload. Interesting classes; Konnert is recommend
His lectures are informative, he's an interesting guy to listen to and actually has a sense of humor (which is rare for a history prof) I would recommend him to anyone who is ready to attend his lectures regularly
Knows what he's talking about when he lectures. Very informative and very reasonable assignments. Fair as well.
hot and brillant
Totally cool guy. I would consider him a modern professor. Intellegent, teaches what is relevant and really personable.
Very awesome prof. I felt guilty missing his class. He was a prof who made the effort to teach if you made the effort to go to his class. Also, he had a wicked sense of humour.
He is an excellent professor. He has enough passion for his lectors to make anyone love the historical element of the world. He is the best prof’s at the university that I found.
Konnert is the best history prof at the U of C. He has engaging lectures, reasonable assignments, a reasonable grading system and he really loves Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I have taken 3 classes w/ him so far, and will take any more classes that he offers. Konnert is an excellent prof
great jokes
Fantastic Prof. Really puts things in a way anyone can understand. Great sense of humour. Made learning FUN. Very engaging lectures and also very approachable. Gives wicked study guides for exams, too which REALLY helped come Exam time. Plus he's hot.. you know, in a middle aged mad sort of way :p
Excellent Prof. Lot's of information broken up with his quirky jokes! Fair marker and keeps your attention for those early mornings!
Dr. Konnert made me want to study history. When I took HTST 201 I wa in biological science. Now I'm a history major. He is a very, very good prof. Explains everything well, keeps you interested, and gives a VERY nice exam review sheet. Excellent prof. one of the best I've had so far.
I took a few classes with him and it was a good learning experience. He knows what he is talking about, teaches well, in a way that allows students to actually understand the subject matter. He is a nice prof if you are a good student. He has high expectations, like the grading scale, so u have to work really hard to get the high grades.
A fantastic prof. Knows his stuff and his jokes are pretty funny. Makes the material interesting and enjoyable. Don't bother buying a textbook, as long as you take good notes.
Great professor. Very enthusiastic about teaching and his jokes are pretty funny. Barely used the texts. Grades fairly and the essays were also fair.
First history class ever taken and this man is the person that convinced me to change majors follwing that semester. Fantastic lecturer, makes things interesting, is incredibly informative and helpful. By far the best professor I've ever had.
I read the reviews prior to enrolling this class-dead on! Dr.Konnert is a very clear lecturer, his lectures are presented well,in a very organized and interesting manner. The amount of effort you put in to this class is directly related to your grade. In my opinion,he is one of the best professors at the U.I would take all classes w/ him if possible!
Awesome prof. Sometimes his lectures can be dry but overall he keeps you interested and he is extremely well informed. Very heplful during his office hours and his assignments are never very difficult. Overall I highly recommend a course with him. Also it has to be said, he does have a slight resemblance to Billy Joel but maybe thats just me.
This guy really knows his stuff, but he's a pretty dull lecturer. Make sure you stay on top of assignments, because there are 2 papers that will kill you if you leave them to the last minute. Funny jokes though
By far the best prof I've had at uni so far, let alone history. I had him for 201 and 327 but plan on taking any other course he offers. His notes are so organized and perfectly explained so going to class is such a pleasure, especially with his occasional jokes. He's got a pretty high marking scale but is always available for extra help or talks.
Very knowledgeable about the material he teches, and not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something. Very flexible with deadlines and understanding when you work part time. Grading is very fair and timely. Highly recommended.
Good lectures, marking scheme is a little tough. Possibly a communist?
Excellent Prof. He knows what he is doing, and and presents things with great understanding and clarity. He's approachable too. Definatly taking another class with him if I could. His marking scheme is harder, but not impossible. I think his TAs are tougher than him haha. Just to note, I am a History nerd though, so I might be biased.
Love this guy, makes the most ridiculous history jokes, but they are so bad they are funny. Let us watch Monty Python, and actually enjoys what he teaches. Highly recommended. Here's a gem from 201 "What's the difference between a menonite girl and a garbage can? A garbage can gets taken out once a week!"
Excellent and engaging speaker, reasonable work load, easy to understand, great prof to have for first year first semester! Very approachable as well!
Awesome teacher!!!!! He is an excellent lecturer, makes things interesting. Go to class since he doesn't post what he teachers on blackboard. He gives all the questions for the test before hand. An easy A if you do your work
I've never been a fan of history but after taking this class it's not to shabby. Konnert is an amazing prof, he's so full of historical knowledge it's unbelievable. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches, and that makes the class!
Such a good prof. He made what he was teaching so interesting and with history that is sometimes hard! Not only that but he is super funny as well. Totally enjoyed it!!!
This is the best prof I've had. He is an engaging speaker that even though i wasn't interested in history, he got me interested in the subject. The study guides are very helpful for the midterm and final. Attendance is mandatory as the notes in blackboard just outline the lecture. He is very funny and made class interesting. a definite GPA booster.
A really good prof. His former TA at MRU (Scott Murray) may even be better than him though. Konnert is actually quite hilarious though, although sometimes I swear its unintentional. Knows what he's talking about, approachable, but can be a little awkward. One of the best history profs at the UofC, and an overall nice guy. Not a communist.
Clear, concise, and always lightening the mood with cheesy joke or two. He is clearly passionate about the material which makes it very easy to be engaged with the material. The man has changed my perspective on many things and has influenced my university career (I am now a history major). He is always will to answer any questions you have, in or outside of class. Even if you are not a history major, I would strongly recommend taking a course with with to see what a passionate professor can do.
HARD MARKER. IN HIS MARKING RUBERIC, 60% IS A F AND 79% IS A C+. 86.9% IS A B
A very good prof, writes out important dates and names, gives alot of information and is very organzied. He keeps class fun with jokes and stories and is always willing to give help and clear up issues. Konnert is clear and gives study guides for tests and assignments. Awesome prof!
i didnt like his class. nice guy but hard marker
If you can get this guy to teach you anything do it. He really is a great prof and knows his stuff. Very approachable and clear. Only advice is that you should make an effort to show up to as many classes as possible because you'll want to take notes. Only one character flaw and that is he's a Canucks fan...but don't let that stop you.
Ok..so this guy is AMAZING. So approachable, and he has a subtle humor about him that makes him all the better. The information in the lecture may be kinda dry, but you just want to attend his lectures because of him! He makes difficult concepts, so clear and the way he speaks is so concise and flowing that taking notes is a breeze! BEST OF THE BEST
Amazing professor, one of the best i've had to date. Lectures are clear, interesting and funny, but if you want to do well in the class attendance is a must. I would recommend this class without hesitation!
Dr Konnert is a great lecturer. Attendance to his class is 100% necessary. Tests are extremely easy since he posts study guides. If your going to take History 201, get this guy.
Great prof, great lecturer, would highly recommend! the course material is a bit boring but he makes it super easy to understand, and he gives study guides so the midterm was a breeze.not the easiest class but definately not hard by any means. hes very approachable, funny, and not to mention hot...in a silver fox kinda way ;)
Konnert's awesome! He makes content that's pretty boring bearable. He has a subtle sense of humor that makes class very entertaining. Attendance is a must though.. on the bright side, his t.a isn't very hard on the eyes.
I had Konnert for many of my history classes and I enjoyed every single one. He makes class interesting with jokes and little side notes of information wouldn't know. He is not afraid to admit he doesn't know something and if he doesn't he will look it up and get back to you for the next class with the answer. Class is a must and grading is harsh.
Great Prof, his midterm and final were easy. He tells you exactly what you need to know on both exams. His grading scale is a little harsh, but his markers seemed to be easy markers. Good GPA booster class
Great Prof, his marking scheme for the assignments were a bit harsh, but easy class because he tells / posts on black board exactly what will be on midterm and essays. He posts pages for reading from previous versions of texts books (money saver)Knows his stuff.
Best history prof I've had so far. Only complaint is the extremely harsh marking scheme (60 is an F). Makes up for this by making the two tests & assignments fairly easy. Watch the T.A.'s in this class, they do much of the essay marking and sometimes will grade rather harshly. Appeal any essay mark below a C+.
Dr. Konnert is an amazing professor. Extremely knowledgable, helpful, and is also pretty funny as well. He made the class both interesting and informative. I would highly recommend him!
Dr. Konnert really knows his subject matter. Is an engaging orator. His TA mark all the papers and they are extremely harsh in their evaluation. They need to be monitored.
hes an amazing prof, knows what hes talking about. i never got bored with his lectures and it was the only class i actually wanted to go to. such an amazing guy, no joke this class was the best history ive taken
Interested in the material, good as a teacher, understanding and helps his students out.
TAs were hardest markers
Konnert is a great speaker, his lectures are super interesting and he is brilliant. Textbook is very important so you don't have to go to all the lectures.
Dr. Konnert is an amazing professor. He is a great speaker and his lectures were always very interesting. Do not be scared of his seemingly harsh grading scheme, he and his TA were very fair. However, I found studying for his final exam to be a bit tricky.
Seriously, amazing! He made the class really enjoyable for non-History majors like myself, and is really helpful, amusing, funny and smart! really does care about everyone. He does mark hard, but he does give you a lot of help on your papers as well gives a study guide for the finals and midterms beforehand!
Dr. Konnert is probably one of the best professors I've had. He's witty & brilliant. He's actually really passionate about what he's teaching & he knows the material very well. His lectures were actually interesting and he's very clear. If you attend class & put in the effort, you'll do well. Best class & prof I've taken so far.
Konnert is a very understanding and helpful prof. The seminar was a bit different but we had a good group of people, who were interested in the material, and there were no bad apples. It was the best seminar of my undergrad simply because Dr. K went through the material at a reasonable rate and provided lots of great discussions. Lots to read tho!
One of the most engaging profs I've had at U of C. Marks fairly and quickly and is always willing to help out. Wrote the text for the course. Konnert is a national treasure.
Konnert is a good professor but make sure you go 2 class, because he doesnt put any notes online. He doesnt put any notes on the smart board either so you have to be listening to what hes saying the whole time to get the info down. His online quizs are pretty easy, all answers are in the textbook. Tests are not multiple choice so get ready to write
Dr. Konnert is by far the best prof I've had so far. He really enjoys the subject and makes history fun! Totally recommend this class even if you have the slightest interest in history!
Great prof! Teaches with enthusiasm and passionate about the material. Honestly, the highlight of my day and I'm always looking forward to this class.
Professor Konnert makes a very enjoyable lecture and as long as you understand the concept and you're a good writer, you will do great in his class! The textbook and attendance are definitely mandatory.
Mark Konnert is an absolutely fantastic prof, 10/10 would take any class with him again. Quizzes were almost 100% textbook based though, and class attendance is a must if you want good notes for the midterm and final.
Konnert is one of my fave history profs at UofC. He is interesting, engaging, and organized! (which seems like a rare combo to find in htst profs these days) He gives you an exact outline of what will be on the test but you still need to work for a good grade! Loved his lectures, taking 327 with him next semester cause he was so awesome!*Rare Prof*
Probably the best Professor I have ever had. His lectures are engaging, clear, organized and interesting. His expectations are very clear and he gives really helpful study guides for both the midterm and final. If you just show up to class and actually study, then you will do fine in this class. I looked forward to going to this class.
Attendence is essential to excelling in his class. You have to be a quick note taker as he covers quite a bit of information in a short period of time. Visual learners my struggle as he uses powerpoint slides with only the main points on them. Rewording your notes in the midterm and final will get you a decent grade.
Mark was a really awesome prof. He makes the material clear and easy to understand and his lectures are entertaining. Know that there will be a lot of note taking in class, but the midterm and final are literally just you rewording your notes. I'd definitely take a class with him again and I'd recommend him to everyone.
Konnert is one of my favourite professors. He's hilarious, engaging, and a fair marker with great opportunities to bump up your grade.
Great professor, though lecturing can sometime be confusing, so pay attention! Tests are fair and an A is easily achieved if you actually put the time in to study. Lots of opportunities for marks, so if you mess up on one thing, you can still climb your grade back up.
Konnert's a gem. Lectures are engaging and interesting, partly due to the content but also due to the enthusiasm of the prof. Corny and awkward in an endearing way, coming to lectures is a must to do well in this course. Grades fairly and posts midterm and final preps that prepare you well. Makes you work but you'll get the grade for your effort.
Can't say enough good things about Konnert. Wasn't too excited about my pre-19th major req but I was engaged and interested throughout.
Dr. Konnert is a solid choice. This was my second class with him, and he's pretty good. Success in his classes is all about going to class and taking good notes, and reading the primary source material and thinking critically about it. He's kind of cheesy, but he overall a really nice professor.
One of the best professors I've had at the University of Calgary in my four years. Dr. Konnert is a kind, caring, funny, and eager teacher. He's got a real 'dad jokes' sense of humour that is endearing, and he's very knowledgable and very approachable. Easy to talk too, friendly, gives interesting lectures and good feedback. All around great guy.
This was my second class with Dr Konnert, and I loved it. He gives great lectures that are well-structured, and he obviously enjoys teaching. This class has been a favourite! Wish I could have another class with him!!
He's a great lecturer, doesn't give a lot of readings. Does have 5 discussion sessions (free participation marks for showing up on those days) that correspond with a short document analysis each time (500 words/discussion x5 discussions). Large (4000 word) term paper :/, gives you the final exam questions in a study guide. Great class!
Really good prof overall; knew the material well and communicated it with enthusiasm. Has a great sense of humor and made the class super enjoyable overall. I wouldn't say this class was an easy A, but it was the type of class that you could do well if you showed up and paid attention. Would recommend this prof.
Dr. Konnert is the best professor I've ever had. His classes seemed to go by so fast as he was so engaging. He really knows his stuff and makes history so interesting. He made sure everyone had the opportunity to succeed as he gave study guides before exams so there were no surprises and was so helpful and caring during office hours.
The best prof I could have had for my first term! He is so helpful and I would highly recommend going to his office hours for help on the paper. His lectures are somewhat repetitive of the textbook, but I would still attend to help understand the 'old' language. He gives you what is going to be on the midterm + final to study from. Great guy!
Dr. Konnert is an amazing prof! im so glad i had him for my first history class in uni and i would love to have him as my teacher again, hes enthusiastic about the topics he teaches and gives the students opportunities to asks questions. Since he wrote his own textbook the lectures are pretty repetitive from the readings, but overall awesome class
Absolute legend. Easily the best prof I had this semester great way to start my first semester at uni.
Super engaging and really makes his lectures interesting. Professor Konnert is kind and easily approachable and he's eager to answer your questions and explain anything to you. Has a dad joke kinda humor, it's great.
There are no slides available. Dr. Konnert speaks very fast and often directly from his textbook making it so there is only one source for the information. The grading outlines are unclear.
My favourite prof so far!! He clearly loves what he's teaching and every lecture is very interesting. 10/10. I would love to take another class with him!
Good professor. Your mark comes mainly from the midterm, the paper, and the final. The final is basically another midterm as it is not cumulative and there is a study guide. His lecturers were not the most exciting and honestly I barely went to class and still did fine.
Konnert is the funniest prof I had this semester! His lectures were fun and engaging, but heavy on the information. The textbook is resourceful and all the weekly quizzes are from it. The midterm and final are both written, but the prompts for what you have to write are given to you beforehand. Information-heavy class, but good!
Dr. Konnert is a great lecturer who genuinely likes what he's teaching, and he makes this course interesting. He uses his own textbook and his lectures basically follow the textbook content, so going to class isn't "mandatory" but definitely helps since he explains things more thoroughly. Gives really good study guides for tests too.
Excellent prof. Respected. His lectures were very stand up and deliver but he was funny and engaging. Read the textbook, all the answers to quizzes are definitely in there. The papers are harder and requite more thought. Midterm and final were easy because he gives a study guide of exactly what's on the tests.
Mark Konnert is an excellent scholar, extremely knowledgeable in his field. However, he is extremely dull with his lectures and simply rambles on and on. He managed to take the fun out of this class for me.
Information goes beyond textbook for this course, which makes recalling details for sources extremely difficult on the exam(no slides) He marks his tests extremely hard, while the term paper is marked very easy. (Yeah I know, makes no sense) Avoid him, there are much better teachers for this course. Also he keeps reporting my reviews LOL.
One of the best profs I've had at U of C. He seems genuinely engaged in his content and makes otherwise dull topics easy to learn about. As a business student in a history class, I didn't have high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised with his teaching style. He gives outlines for the midterm/final so it is easy to do well on them.(HTST 326)
One of the best history profs at U of C. Really knowledgeable, willing to answer student questions, and good at making dry topics interesting to learn about. He also gives very detailed study guides too, so you'll always go into his exams feeling prepared. Would recommend this class + this prof to both history majors and non-history majors!
(win 2020) the first half was great, his lectures were heavily based off the textbook so you don't have to attend, but he was a great lecturer. Kept things interesting. However, switching to online, I was let down as we were told to just read the textbook, with no online lecture or anything. Midterm was easy, but insufficient instruction for paper.
If you want to take the most eurocentric class of your life, this is for you. Imagine taking a class about Europe during 1500-1700s and not once talking about slavery or anti-semitism. Also paints early colonialism as 'exploration'. To top it all off cringy 'jokes' about women make a semi-regular appearance in the lectures. Save yourself the pain.
