You have to go to the lectures because he actually teaches you things, he doesn't just read off of slides. He seems like a very happy person, and he is always willing to answer questions. I am surprised at the negative reviews, but I'm guessing these are from the people that don't attend lecture, which is about half the class.

I got a 6% on the 1st exam. That was on me - many students got perfect scores and average was a B. I actually failed the prerequisite too. Mark was straight up honest with me. He told me I needed to completely change as a student. I realize I've been making excuses for myself and blaming my professors but its me who needs to change.

Wow - I knew Genetics was interesting, but I didn't understand just how interesting. Good lectures, good problem sets (exams are similar which is nice), good discussions.

I feel like it's a trap that attendance isn't required. You have to attend every lecture or you have no chance! I get that it would take a lot of a 50 minute course to call everyone's name, and that giving points for just sitting there is stupid, but still, attendance is required in this class and so that should be the policy. Otherwise he's good.

There is a lot to learn, but not a lot of graded work, so you need to be careful not to let the class slip for a week or two or else it will be hard to catch up. Lots of problem sets and practice quizzes, which aren't graded but you need to do in order to understand the class material. Office hours were mostly empty and he seemed glad to help me.

This class is not easy, but it is definitely passable. He has a high expectation for students, but if you show up to class and pay attention, you should be able to keep up. Tests are worth a lot, so take the practice tests and make sure you understand all the content. The test questions and practice tests questions are very similar.

If you go to class, and put in the effort, you'll be fine. He has weekly online quizzes - focus on that material. You'll see it again on the exams. Labs are interesting and worthwhile, based on learning laboratory techniques which are tied to lecture material. He seems like a very positive person, which I find helpful.

Wilson is a more challenging option, but you will leave a better student. His lectures are advanced and can be hard to follow, so you MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK. Your overall grade will likely reflect your test grades, so don't cram. This class is set up so you learn how to learn science on your own, don't expect to be spoon fed information.

I failed Genetics, but it was my fault. I never went to class. He posts back up lectures on every topic he covers…but I didn't watch them either. I cheated on the quizzes and so didn't learn from them. I begged for a D rather than the F I earned, and when he wouldn't give it to me I sent him a childish email. Just go to class you'll be fine.

Go to class. He provides backup recorded lectures which are actually very good - but go to class. It is a LOT of information, and it is tricky in that you've ‘learned' many of the topics before, BUT not at the depth that they are covered in this class. Also, how you need to study changes as the course changes topics - Wilson helps with this.Good.

Professor Wilson is an awesome teacher and knows a LOT about Biology. Some don't care for his tangents on topics sometimes, since they can be a bit indirect, but I personally learned so much from them. His exams are straightforward and reflective of lecture material. I like the effort quizzes that add up towards the end. Study hard!

He is very cheerful, and also very open, as well as open-minded. All of those things matter to me a lot. The class is a lot of work because there is a lot of detailed material. I think that I would have a hard time if he wasn't such a positive individual. I mean a harder time - bc irl I am having a hard time keeping up. But I am!

You will learn more from reading the textbook and studying on your own then attending lectures. He does not even attempt to break down course material to a digestible manner and goes on tangents about harder concepts in an attempt to make connections. He over complicates for absolutely no reason; I would avoid taking Wilson if possible.

I like and respect Mark as a person and as a professor. He is hilarious as well as passionate about what he does. He does have higher expectations but it made me want to rise to the occasion. I thought his quizzes and exams were pretty straight forward. But studying and reading and attendance was necessary.
