She gives an obscene amount of work! The work she assigns is very complicated and not typical. She's not very good at explaining what she's looking for and if you don't do something her way you'll have to redo it. If it's not your major take someone else. As a person Marla is funny and cool; however she takes Sociology WAY too serious.
she has a tough class, but she is extremely caring.
When I had this teacher I was going though a rough time, I was really sick and in and out of the hospital. She let me make up stuff, and cut me a lot of slack, even still I passed her class with a C. This was the first C I have ever recieved. She gives a ton of work, but she's a decent person.
Lots of enthusiasm, but it can be misdirected. She seems to think having come from Iowa and having a mixed race child makes her an expert on everything related to sociology. God help you if you disagree with her. It's HER classroom to pontificate first, teaching students appears somewhat secondary.
She assigned too much homework.
she seems helpful at first, but she does not have time to read email,
Marla Perry has been an absolute nightmare. She makes everything so much more difficult then it needs to be. She WILL drop you from the class if she thinks you're not devoted enough (learned from experience). She is negative and offers little positive reinforcement. I could go on forever about this terrible experience. SAVE YOURSELF! Avoid!
Here's the catch, try to guess what she wants you to get from the reading, if you don't and you try to do your own analysis, you will get a bad grade (even if you are correct). Doesn't explain what she wants. Take her if you are a mind reader...
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN!!! I took her class and I admit I slacked off briefly, but I spoke with her privately and she was nice enough to let me make up the work. Then, when final grades came, guess what my grade was? You got it, a big fat F!!! Save yourself the hard work people. Try to take another professor. That woman should never ever teach anyon
Took online class. Always responsive and helpful. Lot of writing on many quizzes, assignments. Does take a lot of time to complete coursework.
I graduated w/ honors with a bachelor's from a tier 1 univ 4 yrs ago and had to take this class for my 2nd degree. This is easily 1 of the most time consuming classes I've ever had. The amt of work she gives is absolutely ridic!! I put TONS of work into it but she has criticized all I write. I'll prob end up with a C in this class! RUN FAR AWAY!!!!
The class wasn?t difficult by any means; however, the person teaching it was. Assignments lacked adequate clarity for her particular expectations. After thoroughly reading the required text, I left with an acute awareness of family construction and a HUGE dent in my 4.0GPA. The ONLY class I?ve ever walked out on. Her ?help? is more of a hindrance!
Marla is one of the funnest professors and advisors one could have. I don't know where all these bad ratings come from. Yes,there is a lot of course work and reading, but you are in college so expect that! If you dont't like analyzing social theory or critical thinking then this course is not for you.Maybe sociolgy comes easy to me but I like Marla
I loved her. She gave us lots of work but I learned so much in her class and it was very interesting. I would take her again!
I had two classes with Marla this semester and thought she was great. Her greatest strength is her ability to keep class lectures interesting and informative while encouraging class participation. If you like to work hard and learn, you will love her. If you think college should be easy, you will probably agree with the criticisms on this sight.
I enjoyed her social psychology course. She is a tough grader, but she is helpful, gives feedback, and allows you to re-do the assignments. It is a challenging class with a hefty workload, but she is a great teacher.
Perry consistently asks for more detail, in every assignment no matter how much detail you give within any given assignment. Which is humorous since she has a plethora of misspelled words through out the quizzes, assignments, and discussions. I recommend Perry only if you want to be bogged down with tedious assignments that are unfairly graded.
She is a wonderful instructor & her classes are quite engaging. I enjoyed every aspect of them. She provides feedback that is very constructive & helpful. I learned so much from her! If you love sociology, do yourself a favor & take her courses. She's not there to stroke egos, but to get her students to work & think. Critical thinking is must!
Mrs. Perry Is absolutely energetic. She's funny and if you're not easily offended you'll love her. Her quizzes ARE sorta hard sometimes, but she tries her best to explain. She has let my class off easy plenty of times. But, all in all I enjoyed her class.
I'm currently taking an on-line course with Mrs.Perry for Marriage&Family. I am considering dropping her course. I decided to take this as an elective because I thought it would be interesting and not require to much time. I was wrong, her quizzes are horrible and she grades very tough. Should have picked a different teacher.
Ms. Perry is VERY critical when she grades (online). It is almost like she WIL NOT give an A on ANYTHING! I constantly write papers that I feel that I nailed and she gives me a C. I ask her questions, and answers very complexly. Once we had a conference call and she seems almost mad because I was asking for help and further explanations. BEWARE!
The topics are intersting, but the teacher and the expecations are impossible. Like the comments below mine I am taking it online and my usual A/B work has been getting C/Ds. I never know what is expected and when I aske questions I get vague responses. She always wants more details no matter what you say, and the quizzes are more like exams.
I took this class online, EXCELLENT Instructor! It wasn't easy, but I worked hard and got an A. If I didn't understand I sent emails, they were answered right away and she would explain it 15 different ways if she had to. She pushes you to do better, and to see other views of society, exactly what a GREAT teacher is supposed to do! I learned a lot
(Online)The people who signed up to take this class and complained weren't doing the work, period! The class is NOT an easy A by any imagination, but, she is VERY helpful & she challenges you to think beyond your own personal world view (which is what you'll have to do in the field). I'm glad I didn't listen to ya'll and took her class anyway.
Yes this is a hard class, yes she does always ask for more detail, but no she does not grade unfairly. She challenges you and that is why you go to college, to be challenged. I wrote my first 3 papers without much effort and received a C on each. On my last paper I actually put effort into it and made an A.
I'd take her class again, because she actually cares that we understand the material. It was a lot of work, but she was flexible with us, so that helped. I want to learn the theories for my future in this field, and she certainly challenged me to learn them.
I've taken several classes with Marla, and she's incredible. Very understanding if you just talk to her. Ask her to explain. There's a lot of work and she pushes you to constantly better yourself, but that's what school is about. My critical thinking skills have drastically improved since taking her classes.
She always said that pppl rise or fall to the expectations others put on them. She challenges her students but she is more than willing to help.
I'm taking her online class right now as an elective. I thought it would be simple, but I was very wrong. Like others have said on here, the assignments are vague. And also like others say, she grades pretty harshly. It's almost like she thinks your insight is wrong, which is impossible. I really don't even care anymore; I'm just ready to move on.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Period. Her lectures are above what you would expect to find at a community college. If you want to learn, challenge yourself, and have a meaningful education, please do yourself a favor and take this class. If you feel content with being mediocre, this is not for you. Marla is clear, fair and helpful.

Not sure why she is at NSCC, (over qualified) she is an amazing professor. I am taking Intro to sociology this summer. Hard class? absolutly, worth it? every minute.
Professor Perry is AWESOME! Class was not easy, but I worked hard and managed an A. You have to put forth an effort & ask questions if you don't understand, professor Perry isn't a mind reader! Her office number and e-mail address are listed right on the syllabus. Every time I needed help she was quick to respond and answered my questions fully.
I had her class this summer, very easy class. We had 9 chapters reviews. Didn't use the book that much at all. English is my second language, so it wasn't that hard for me to understand the assignments. I recommend her class to everyone that is willing to learn.
Easy class I got an A. GREAT TEACHER.
Liberal nonsense at its best. This is the worst class I have ever taken. She is so vague nobody understands what is going on. If I knew Sociology was the science of blaming everyone else for your problems I wouldn't have taken this course. I don't believe anything in this class but I kept my mouth shut and got my B last semester.
Marla is an amazing teacher with an intense interest in the topic. She is very concerned with her students and their understanding of the material. She also is not afraid to confront anyone if their views differ from hers. She forces you to evaluate your perspective. This is not an easy class but her expectations are realistic and do-able.
She makes you work, but she is easy to understand and makes you think. It was overall a great experience. Now if you do want an easy class with an easy A, I would not suggest taking her class.
Marla was a great teacher! She is very clear about what she expects out of you from the 1st day and to be honest she doesn't expect too much! She is very helpful inside and outside of class. Responds to her emails very quickly and gives out a ton of extra credit so if you don't make an A then it really only your fault!!!
The instructor is too difficult for a core class. I just wanted to take a class to fill up a pre req. Instead I found out I had to spend more time on this class than my major classes. Do not recommend.
Very nice and energetic . Can be hard to follow sometimes but if you ask questions she'll do her best to explain. Attendance is important in her class. She breezes through chapters very quick expect to have to really study in her class.
I would not recommend anyone who is not a a sociology major to take this class. I have never made any grades less than A/B since I have been at NSCC but she is very unrealistic and almost always looks for ways to deduct points and it's impossible to earn an A on anything in her course. She needs to go teach grad school or something.
I was extremely disappointed with this class and the teacher, Marla Perry. I took this class as a summer class and it was the most difficult class I've ever taken because of the teacher. She is very unrealistic with her grading. She is also unclear on the directions with some major assignments. I do NOT recommend her to anyone.
Prof. Perry is a very amiable person but way too vague as an instructor. She is not able to easily convey concepts to Sociology. Your better off teaching yourself. You have to get help with everything if you intend on passing. Her grading is harsh. It is death by a thousand cuts. She takes points off left & right. Impossible to know what she wants.
Ms. Perry is a very good teacher that always has her students' best interest in mind. This class isn't the easiest class, but only because a lot is expected from you; after all, it is a college course. Don't take this class if you expect to get an easy credit. Overall, it's a fun class.
I took Ms. Perry's Social Psychology course because I'm required to take 2 social science courses to obtain my degree. I'm not majoring in any social science field, but I found myself spending more time on Perry's assignments than ANY other course I was taking at the time. Never clarified what she wanted on assignments either. Wouldn't recommend.
She is a great teacher, who makes you work for your grade but is easy.
Professor Perry is one of the most caring, understanding, professional professors I have seen in a LONG time! This class is based on critical thinking and learning to understand different points of view. There is busy work that is very simple, ton of extra credit available. Feedback is critical to learning. Study and you will get an EASY "A"
One of the worst professors out there. You will not gain knowledge in her class. Her grading scale is horrifying, you will never get anything above a 70 even if you tried hard enough. I will never ever take her again even if I had to. Very bad teacher.
I had Professor Perry for introduction to sociology. Professor Perry was very energetic, and liked to involve the whole class in discussions. She did assign a major project that requires a lot of work, but she helped whenever I needed it. Her other projects or assignments outside of class are usually interesting. I do recall the occasional essays
Professor Perry is a very interesting teacher, gives great examples. She does push hard but understands each students needs. Take this course from her , May have to apply critical thinking but overall I think you will be pleased with her class.
I am a straight A student normally, fourth semester here and this was by far my least favorite class and worst grade in college, extremely critical grading and does not like to be proved wrong at all, extremely repetitive and if not too helpful. Everyone in the class said the exact things I am typing here.
I should of checked her on here before I took the class and now I regret it.
She is a nice person. She will help you if you ask her for help. Her teaching style is not for everyone. Sometimes she can be a little confusing when explaining things or even during her lectures. Not a class I would choose to take again but it was not so bad that I was miserable the entire time either. Not always clear on expectations for work.
She is very unclear with directions. What you talk about in class has nothing to do with assignments. Blames unclearness on "college academia" Instead of answering your questions she fights you to ask questions that has nothing to do with what you're struggling with. And doesn't answer your initial question.
She is a very good person, however she is not a great teacher. The quizzes have nothing do with what she goes over in class. She is repetitive on things that are not necessary. Asking the same thing over and over on assignments in different ways and expects different answers. Like I said before, great person, horrible teacher. Get ready to read!
Out of all of my teachers, Ms. Perry was willing to help me the most. She not only helped me with assignments in her class, but helped with questions I had that were not related to the course. She assigns a lot of work, and some is somewhat difficult, but she is very lenient and understanding and also gives A LOT of EC opportunities.
It can seem overwhelming, but if you get on the grind it is certainly doable. The lectures were usually very interesting. It opened my mind to new ideas and thoughts. Most people that reviewed badly were probably just weren't willing to work. She gave plenty of spontaneous extra credit, so if you struggle there is a way to make it through.
WORST EVER!!! Gives stupid hard assignments that aren't even relevant to the class subject. Grades way too hard. Gives unclear feedback that leaves you with more questions than you started with. Unclear assignment instructions, then counts off for unspecified errors. Horrible horrible horrible. I will never take another Marla Perry class.
Pros: EXTREMELY smart and professional, very caring towards everyone. In my opinion too nice, goes out of her way to help students. Cons: She is VERY vocal about her political views (this was a sociology class), didn't always address both sides of the argument. "this is why I'm right" instead of "here are the facts, go think about them."
She does too much !!!
Pros: enough extra credit IF DONE you can pass with a C or B with not much effort. The lectures are entertaining enough the class can fly by. Some group activities that avoid the humdrum of daily lecture. Quizlet for the answers on the quizes. Cons: the DQ assigned every chapter are graded harshly; read carefully and be specific. Ask if unclear.
Hands down one of the worst online classes.
the class is interesting and entertaining because she tells a lot of stories and jokes. she also cares about her students. Her teaching style is easy to catch on to but the work she gives us is difficult if you don't read the chapters and the papers and the test run together within the same week making it too difficult to finish anything on time.
Absolutely don't take her.
I took this as an online class, I think this was the first mistake. The grading was super tough and the feedback unclear. She did however respond to emails quickly, although the feedback and extra directions often made the assignment even more confusing. The assignments didn't always seem to jive with the chapters. I'll never take online again.
Very demanding, very hard to understand her assignments, too high of expectations
Probably an awesome person outside of class, she is very funny and tells jokes but the work is EXTREMELY TOO HARD to only be a "First year experience" course. Way too much homework. It was harder than my microbiology, statistics and psychology class combined #ThumbsDown
Professor Perry is very friendly and since I'm taking the class online, she responds very quickly to emails when I have questions. However she is a very tough grader, especially on discussion posts. I've gotten A's in both English I and II and am a good writer, but I can't seem to get anything higher than a B for discussion posts no matter what.
She is very passionate about sociology! If you don't skip this course. You have to give your all to get an A, but I did bare-minimum and got a B. She likes discussions in class and will sit in silence until someone answers her questions. Very tough grader, you may never have exactly what she is looking for. She does give a lot of extra credit!
I took this class as a prerequisite. She is very passionate about sociology but you will likely find her feedback unhelpful and never receive higher than a 90 on her discussion questions. Lectures are okay, very participation oriented. Questions are very superficial however she expects deep responses. Overall, I don't recommend her.
Shes a nice erson, funny, passionate about sociology but her expectations are too high and her class work is not fit for people who are working on associates degree programs. Shes really hard to follow. The discussions in class were cool, but her assignments and quiz questions are really hard to understand. Id never take her classes again.
Super high expectations with very unclear directions. Also, if you miss an assignment, youll never hear back from her!
I am dropping this class, she is way too hard on grades and the instructions are very unclear. This class will only bring my GPA down. NOT WORTH IT
Shes a fair grader and expects you to really put some thought into your discussion questions.
She does not quite understand that we are here for the credit and that we are trying our best. She grades way too hard and is inconsiderate that we are new to this subject. We are not sociologists like she is. I do not recommend any course with her.
She has very high expectations for her students, and I appreciate that she is very passionate about sociology; however, I think because of those high expectations, she grades very hard considering that this is new material to most students, and this class is only being taken because students have to take the course. I do not recommend.

Her instructions/directions are not clear
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She grades harshly. She wants you to write a paragraph for every point that you write. Basically an essay for every discussion. Everything IN DETAIL. I do not recommend AT ALL. Don't expect to pass with an A or high B. Expect the worst.
If you arent a liberal or socialist or SJW, you not only wont like this class with her, your grades will suffer if you don't parrot back the liberal line on everything. She pushed her personal political views as facts. Horrible professor
Worst tecaher I have ever had. Do NOT take any class with her. You will regret it. There is always room for improvement but she takes it to another whole level. It is ridiculous.
Perry grades very hard. I would follow her instructions, verbatim, and she would say I missed something (discussion posts). I emailed her about this giving quotes/examples and she did not respond. Her feedback was inaccurate and copy and pasted. Decent amount of opportunists to get points toward grade plus extra credit. Still, would not suggest.
DO NOT take her class! She is nice but grades extremely hard even if you completed everything she asked of you. She acts like we know everything about soc. You need to specify every single thing and explain everything in paragraphs to get a decent grade. A lot of discussion questions, quizzes, and tests which are hard. This class is ruining my gpa.
I do not recommend her to anyone. I am an all A student but she has been by far the hardest professor for when it comes to grading and too much work.
She's tough but this is college and it's supposed to be challenin' and she's very supportive. What other professor says text me if you have quick questions over the weekend? Not many
Professor didn't grade based on rubric or any of her own set guidelines. She said she wants to "challenge" us and writes paragraphs of feedback, but when you make corrections according to feedback she will find something else. Even on optional extra credit assignments with no requirements, she wouldn't give full points. Good course, bad professor.
She's very cool and made my first year experience at NSCC entertaining
She does not grade by the standards she outlines in her rubric, on top of that, she grades WAY to hard. I am not saying this just to say it. I am a straight A student and if you take this course you will learn she does not grade fairly. DO NOT take this class!
She is generally unintelligent, and I am not saying this to be rude. She is loud and wrong. She will state things that are incorrect as fact, and be offended when corrected. It's pretty much impossible to get an A, she will find something wrong with everything you do. She copy-paste's feedback. Is so unfunny it's painful to watch.
I only took this course because it was required, but Marla grades so relentlessly it's hard to pass. She contradicts herself so much, but when you E-Mail her for clarification, she does nothing to help you. She's one of those professors that takes points off just because she can, and no one's perfect. Feedback is also unnecessarily long. I say run.
Consistently wrong about things, even simple things, despite being the professor. If you answer in class prepare to be "wrong". Grading very unclear. Too woke at times. Wants you to write big paragraphs yet sometimes she will mark out the entirety of your paragraph except for one or two sentences and say "this was enough". Walls of feedback though
She is very passionate in her beliefs and pushes students to think critically. Her classes are eye opening in regards to current events.
Gives good feedback but almost impossible to get a good score on any assignment she grades and lots of textbook reading.
