Great guy! Really good professor. He explains everything clearly. Lets you revise your papers as much as you want. Always their to answer questions. Lots of homework but if you pay attention it is not hard. You definitely want to take him. Best professor ever!

He is a great professor! All you have to do is do all of the work and you have an easy A. He is an easy going guy and has a great teaching ability. He does everything he can to help his students succeed and wants to see everyone he teaches do well.

I loved taking this class with Marlen! He is very interesting and takes time to help every student. I learned a lot from his class and as long as you do all of your work, you can get an A. I signed up to take his 102 class because I liked this class so much.

Marlen's tutelage has been very helpful for me these past two semesters. His in class exercises are very helpful and address important skills that are necessary for most incoming freshman. Although I've found a large amount of the activities to be elementary and easy, there are strong correlations to improved performance for the class as a whole.

Marlen has been my favorite teacher at UTampa by far! He truly cares for his students and their success. He has a hands on approach and sets up meetings to make sure his students are on the right path. His class was difficult but if you complete the work on time and give it your best effort you are going to get a good grade! Recommend!

This class is not the easiest because of the amount of work, but Marlen makes it easier by talking about it and explaining it a lot. Just do the work on time and you'll get an A. The class is not lecture type but more interactive and that makes it fun. Marlen cares about all of his students and is always there if you need him. I love this class.

Marlen is an amazing professor. He is obviously very excited and dedicated to his job as an english teacher. There is a lot of work to be done in this class but the activities, homework and writing objectives always have a specific purpose. There are so many opportunities in this class to potentially be published as freshman.

A ton of work, more than my friends who took the same class with other teachers. Now theyre struggling in 102 and I'm breezing through. Plus I learned alot about myself and Marlen makes learning fun.

This is the first time I've taken a class that is so completely about me and what I'm interested in. Marlen has this weird way of taking really boring learning and making it inspiring and enjoyable. I never thought I'd have an opportunity to do research like this as a freshmen. Take this professor!

Best teacher I've had at UT. I never liked writing until Marlen showed me I had to have a personal connection to my topics. You have to rewrite everything like 3 times but if you do the work you can get an A.

Marlen is a really caring and enthusiastic teacher. I took him for both 101 and 102 and have now changed my major to writing (I used to be biology). In 102 I designed my own research project and it was cool to see how people in the real world do research. It was sometimes hard to handle the workload but his office meetings helped get me excited.

The absolute most passionate teacher I have ever had. It is completely obvious he knows exactly what he's doing, and he helps out students greatly. He is not easy, but you will get an A if you do the work and try. He makes going to class and trying worthwhile. Definitely take him if you have the chance. You won't regret it.

Marlen makes me feel like I can be put into the real world without any question. He is such a passionate teacher and truly wants to be in the class. He loves teaching and each of his students.

If organized, the class has everything to be really fun. You HAVE to do his homework to have the full grade but is totally worth it.

Amazing teacher. very very passioned with his work. His way of teaching is very creative and fun I never got bored in any of his classes. It is a class where you need to work but you learn a lot. if you get the change for sure take the class. You will lear english and at the same time learn about yourself.

Really great class, tries hard to keep students engaged and interested in the projects. Had one paper all semester that was research about an area in our major. Will help you in any way as long as you ask, sets up meetings throughout semester to make sure you are on right track. Definitely recommend him, but NOT AN EASY CLASS. WORK HARD.

Marlen is an AMAZING teacher. He honestly wants everyone in the class to get an A and will give you all the tools to get that A. All you have to do is have things done on time and do what he asks. Amazing professor. He really cares for his students and is willing to help if you're interested. There's a lot of homework but it is not impossible to do. Definitively come to class because that proves that you're interested on whats going on. He is really nice and fair. Truly the best writing professor in the school.

Honestly, the best professor here at UT I have met so far. He helped me every step of the way from writing our research paper, to helping me decide what I wanted to do in the future. He will challenge you and expect you to work you're butt off, but he will always be there to help. I highly recommend Marlen to anyone taking FYW 101 or 102.

Intelligent, extremely helpful, and provides THE BEST atmosphere inside the classroom. You will learn so much from Marlen that I am at a loss of words just describing how great he is. By far the best teacher I had. Worst thing about this class is that it is a high-energy class.

Marlen's class is different then other english classes, you have a blog you must contain, while actually doing writing and research. Not a book report type class. He is very friendly! Even though sometimes he gets very moody. YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU DO THE WORK. You can get an A, but you have to work for it.

He is amazing. He challenged me and my creativity, he gave me hard work that I could not procrastinate on, and he actually cares about his students unlike most of my professors. He deserves the best job in the world.

This is probably one of the most helpful classes I have taken at UT. I know how to write a real research paper now. We got to pick any topic we wanted, so I got to do my paper on something I actually cared about. He gives great feedback. The class was a ton of work. It is not an easy A, but I learned a lot and highly recommend him as a teacher.

He is an extremely serious professor and that is what makes it so great. He puts 150% effort into all of his students, giving full attention and help when you need it most. Through step by step processes he takes an extremely difficult research process and makes it not as brutal while still being fun and relaxed. My favorite professor hands down.

Best professor ever! He's always willing to help no matter what. This class isn't an easy A. You do have to actually DO your work. But as long as you complete your homework and come to class you will pass. A lot of work. The class is worth it because you are being prepared to do graduate level work. He is preparing you for the future.

Marlen is a really personal and passionate professor. He is REALLY into the subjects that he discusses and at times his class can be overwhelming, but he really makes sure each individual in the class does well.

Marlen is the ONLY reason I stayed at UT, I would have transfered after first semester but I got Marlen for class again! He cares about each of his students and inspires us to do our best work. His class is HARD, I've never worked so hard for a grade, but I've never taken so much away from a course either! Marlen is the coolest!

Marlen is all about his students and the outcome of their work. He might seem intimidating but he isn't, he acts this way to get us lazy college students going. He is helpful and VERY patient. We did not have a lot of homework, he just broke down our research papers in different parts so it was not a huge work load. Best professor I've had.

Excellent teacher. Very available for consulting on work and giving advice. Also is the only teacher in UT FYW department to make primary research mandatory for FYW 102.

Unlike any other instructor I've had - highly motivating! It's also great to have an actual writer and researcher as an instructor. It was cool that Marlen showed us his own research projects. His students routinely talk about how much they enjoy his teaching, even despite the huge workload. Bravo UT for hiring this guy!

Fun class about the human senses. The only class I never felt compelled to skip and the only class I took in which I am actually using what I learned. Take him for both 101 and 102, you wont regret it.

LOVE MARLEN! he is honestly the best professor i have had during my UT freshman year. He really helps us students not only learn the material, but how to get work done! he is AWESOME, and yes, hard, but I am so happy i had him as a professor. he has taught me more then i could ever have learned from another professor!!!

Although u can't pick your prof for 101, let me just assure those of you who will take 101 w/ Marlen that you absolutely got the best prof in the department. Though class is not easy he makes all of the work manageable. My roommate had another prof and only had half the work that I had. I feel as if I learned twice as much as she did.

Whoa, intense class with TONS of work. But it's the one class I worked hardest for and I'm really proud of my outcome. His meetings are awesome - chocolate!

Surprising guy more like a coach than a teacher - students are like a team, he wants everyone to succeed together. Heavy on technology which can be challenging and very strict grading policies. But i learned a lot and enjoyed the process. Favorite classes of my freshman year.

Awesome classes. Marlen is one of those teachers who loves his job and expect his students to love school. He knew me better then my other profs and really pushed me. I didn't always like him (he can be really direct) but I did always learn something. Has high expectations for students.

Marlen is amazing. He's the greatest teacher I've ever had, hands down. I've never learned so much in a writing class. He is beyond helpful & SO approachable, I've never felt more comfortable in a class. Your workload will be a lot greater than any other FYW101 class, but it's 100% worth it. I absolutely hate writing and while this class was challenging, I've honestly learned so much. The workload starts off heavy, but a breeze at the end. Marlen is the only reason I survived this class. He is so passionate about what he teaches and the success of his students. He's so down to earth and funny. TAKE HIM!!!!!

He is hilarious! Very good professor, you can tell he actually loves teaching and is very passionate about what he does. TAKE HIM you will not regret it! Yes, there is a lot of HW's & assignments but I promise, it is very doable and you will definitely learn in the long run!
