A great asset to the Biology Department. Very smart. has a very positive attitude. friendly. very approachable. goes out of her way to help students. her tests are difficult, but her way of teaching makes you retain more information
She recently took over our Zo class...VERY UNCLEAR ..horrible tests and a little rude
Nerdy sense of humor sometimes, but probably one of the most attractive professors I have ever had - but then I'm kinda dig the quirky ones.
Never a boring moment with this instructor. She gives students so many chances. A rare find this one is!
very energetic in her lectures, often let loose of her pens, and they flew!
Took over my Zoology class over half way through the sememester and brought my grade down from an A to a B. She sucks ass and is bossy.
If you want to learn, then she can help! She is not an easy A, but will go above and beyond to help you to understand. Very approachable with a good sense of humor! Use her office hours!! She will take the time to explain any questions or concerns. :)
She is not organized at all. She will ask extra credit questions but you never see the results back and at the end of semester you will just see all the missing points. My grade was A instead of B if she did not lose some of my extra points papers that I returned them. Make sure that she give all of your papers back if not you are a loser :(
I failed her class. She is very hard goes fast. Her lab exams for exampe the skull, she gives 4 or 5 different views to study, she can't be human. She is very nice but I will never take a class from her again! I just passed 430 with grade B no problem. This teacher gives way to much information to study and exam is hard.
In my opinion, if teacher knows everything and can answer all the student's questions then she can gives a hard test. But, in her class was not the same.
I recently took Zoology from this Professor and I would NEVER do it again. She is extremely unorganized and very bossy. Throughout her class I did not know what my grade was until the very end; she does not hand back papers regularly and waits until the very LAST minute to post study guides. I would NOT take her again!!
Marlene is really knowledgable but I truly hated the class with her teaching it. The tests were redicilous ( too tricky) She was the one coming up with all these assignments like we don't already have enough to study. The whole two teacher thing was just bad. Poorly organized. You have to wait like 3 weeks to get tests back.
Not an easy class but she was helpful and knowledgable. She was a bit quirky and a blast to watch as she really gets into some of the material. She's also a cutie.
Definately knows her stuff. Lectures and study guides DID NOT reflect the tests. Tests very tricky. Assign'd a lot of busy work and homework. Pop quizzes regularly and off the top of her head in lab and lec. Lec consists of powerpoint and are mostly pictures. Your on your own for writing text from lectures.
Knows her stuff. Is approachable. Wants you to understand. Is fun. Tests are very hard, but gives extra credit. Gets off-track during lab because of her enthusiasm. Make sure you know all of the lab handout info even if you don't have time for it during lab. You'll see it on tests! Know all lectures! Read the book. Find others to study with!
Perhaps there is a shortage of available instructors for Zoology because the 2 Professors at ARC who teach the subject may know the material but don't know how to teach it effectively. Their "unique" way of teaching zoology, that they are so proud of, leaves you with, at most, a slippery grasp of the subject matter. TAKE ZOOLOGY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
Very unorgenized teacher. She was not good teacher for this class. She lost my extra credit papers and I ended up to get B with 88 points.
This professor is very knowledgeable about the subject. She teaches it with excitement and a sense of humor. At the same time her tests are one of the most difficult you will encounter probably in the entire college. My advice to all of you out there is avoid her if you want a good grade, but if you don't care for the grade then take it.
SPUNKY...BUT SCATTERBRAINED. SHE IS A BIT MESSY. FIELD TRIPS WERE FUN, BUT A BIT TOO MUCH WAS CRAMMED IN A SHORT TIME.
She is really nice in office hrs. Don't call her Mrs. Martinez its Dr. ok! She didn't spend 4 years in evil biology school to be called MRS. Also, the multiple choice questions are very tough. Great at explaining things. However, there are a lot of things you have to know and she asks questions that are not what you would call straightforward.
Wonderful field trips, quite a bit crammed into them, but nonetheless fun! Very spunky and humorous and keeps the subject interesting!
RIDICULOUSLY HARD TEACHER! Doesn't have a set schedule, jumps around with whatever subjects she wants to teach, doesn't follow along with the book AT ALL but you are expected to read everything that is "lectured" on. Her "lectures" include powerpoints that you have to scribble down as fast as you can. Quizes almost EVERY DAY in lab, only 5pts bu
She is an awesome prof. She doens't use the book so do not purchase it. I used it on;y to study from. She tests straight from her lectures. Very helpful. Always willing to meet to clarify questions. If I didn't get an A the first time I would take her again for sure. Easy A with out the effort. She is fun and excited about her teaching!
No mater hw desper8 u r, NEVER TAKE HER! Im SAVING u&doing u a HUGE fvor. No mater hw driven u r but nver hav d sme vision as HER, ull not survive. Our clas started with 42 students, @ finals prollie ders only 6. NOT EXAGERATING.
Worst Pro I Had. The MC Tests are ambiguous and Lab Tests require a good memory. The Pro is Nice and energetic but the Lec are not very helpful for the Test. However,The study guides are helpful. Hw packets are easy and the answers are not checked. Attendance is mandatory if u don't want to miss a quiz. Over all I don't Recommend her.
Excellent Professor. A&P is NOT a easy class, but I feel she explains what she want very well. Very helpful and will work with you. If I don't end up with a A at the end of this semester it will be on me. Offers extra credit and very nice. Actually I've compared with others students, makes us memorize less than what is required in other classes. :)
Martinez is an excellent professor. She gives you all the material you need to pass her tests. Yes, they are hard and you do have to study. Get used to it. She is very friendly and energetic and clearly enjoys teaching. I'd recommend her to anyone. Now if only she would teach 431!
Tests are HARD. The subj is NOT easy but she REALLY wants you to do well. You have to work for the grade. Gives all the info you need to pass and also makes herself available if you need extra help. If planning on transferring to a nursing program or higher ed, you will be ahead of the other students because you will truly understand.
Multiple choice questions are very hard, and she is a very demanding teacher. Even if you study hard, you'll end up with a lower grade on the test! The good thing is she gives extra credits.
Yes,it is true that she gives you a lot of extra credit but you are lucky if she does not lose them. She usually collects the extra credits and grade them towards the end of the sem. You are LUCKY if she still has your extra credit paper by the end.SHE LOST SOME OF MY EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS and I ended up not getting a point for them.
Martinez is a semi-difficult professor. In the beginning, it seemed impossible to pass but as the semester went on you get used to her style. Tests are difficult and sometimes tricky. You really need to study but she is willing to help. makes gherself available to students.
Probably the meanest person you will ever meet in your lifetime. Will go out of her way to make you miserable. Be prepared to take 8 quizzes a day. I'm a straight A student and I thought about committing suicide after taking 2 days of her class. Let me put it this way I wish I could curse a lot right now!!!!
DR. MARTINEZ IS AN AMAZING TEACHER FULL OF ENERGY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY TOUGH COURSE BUT SHE DOES WHAT SHE CAN TO MAKE IT EASIER. VERY HELPFUL. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! THIS IS NOT THE CLASS TO FALL BEHIND IN. GREAT TEACHER.
DO NOT take a class from martinez... she is snide, controlling and immature. Our class as a whole cringes at the sound of her name... worst teacher ever, not helpful at all (she is smart though.. and doesnt handle it well, treats you like an invalid)...
i will never take her again in my life.she is friendly but hard. hardest teacher ve ever take
Good points-tests off lectures, posts powerpoint on BB, doesn't use book, lectures aren't dull, she's knowledgable, will do whatever to help you. Bad points-lots of quizes, will miss alot of points if you miss class, wording on test is VERY tricky. The material is hard, she is not the easiest, but she is very willing to help. Go 2 office hrs!
This is a tough class, but Prof. Martinez is not intimidating and very willing to help. The book is not used often. I would suggest getting the photographic atlas-its the best. Don't take an easier zoo class because you heard this was one is hard. If you're at this level, chances are you're going to transfer and This class is good preparation.
Very smart lady. This is one of the hardest classes I have taken yet but as long as you are interested in the subject and willing to study your butt off you will do fine. She does curve a small amount which is helpful but dont rely on that. A bunch of very cool dissections and a fun mandatory field trip. I would reccommend her if you love Bio.
very hard teacher. Gives out a quiz everyday, sometimes 2 or 3, depending how she feels. Exams and quizzes are tricky and hard.she doesn't give particle credit for them. Lecture is fun and interesting, but you have to really work your butt off to get a decent grade on your test. wouldn't really recommend her.
AVOID AT ALL COST!i suffered from depression when i took her class :(, have to drop it.tricky tests and quizzes, its like a guessing game.assignments were my only hope but completed packetful of homework only worth like 2 points.her class was the only available bio430 the time i enrolled meaning people are really avioding her.do not waste your time!
MUST TAKE HER!! If you're going into nursing, you need a teacher like Martinez because if you can't do well in her class, you can expect to fail the nursing program because all classes are like her class. You have to study. Ofcourse!!!! It's biology! But if you take her class and succeed, it will really prepare you for the nursing program.
Dr. Martinez is a very hard and picky professor. She wants you to know everything about her material. Its what you need for nursing. She teaches UCDavis style.Go to all office hours. She teaches from her slides and material not the book. I only used the book for pictures. more than half of class droped. Started with a C and ended with an A, Thank God
Dr. Martinez is by far one of the best Professors I've had in my college career. I love her enthusiasm! She made zoology that much more interesting because of her level of energy. She is very personable and helpful so attend her office hours. She lets you write on the board, and I find that very helpful. Study & you can get a A/B! I got an A!!! =)
This was an extremely easy class. All I did was attend every class, payed attention and studied a couple nights before a test. I ended up with the highest grade in the class. Make sure that you fully understand connecting concepts though because the whole semester is linking material together.
Martinez did a very poor job as a professor. Extremely unorganized, unable to tell which assignments were due, did not bother to return work or give grades, etc. Tests are not about learning material but are about "tricky wordplay." Definitely avoid.
This teacher is terrible!
she's energetic but not for bio, her tests are supper hard up to 100 question on lap, up to 50 on lecture and around 7 short essay. expect her to ask anything on the test, could be either from book, lecture or homework. every time you ask a question she'll answer with another question or questions. good luck
I think Martinez is an awesome teacher. Yes, her test have confusing word play, but if you know the material, it won't be a problem. She offers extra credit and office hours to help. It's a hard class no matter who you take. I found her positive attitude encouraging. People who tend to fail a class slam the teacher, I may fail and think she's great
No matter which prof you have, A&P is a tough course. Martinez is a very nice, but can be a little frustrating. Never answers a question directly, always tries to make you figure out the answer yourself. For some that's fine, for me it was frustrating and embarrassing. Huge benefit: You didn't have to memorize origin/insertion for muscles.
Marlene Martinez is a great friendly teacher! But her class is hard, as is any science class. She is helpful but you must go to office hours! You have to make this class your priority, they say you should study at least 30 hrs a week! Be carful on the wording of her test can be trick and during lab time ask all the question you can about the models
I love this professor. she made it where anyone can understand.Make sure you ask questions and go to her office hours it is really helpful.I advise to read before and after class, especially the notes. I would take her again
Her lectures are really fun and she is very smart and approachable. Tests do not however match the same teaching style being almost impossible to get over a C. They are incredibly extensive and tricky. Very professional in her interactions with students and has a positive attitude. Prepare to take lots of pop quizzes. Good luck, you will need it.
Tough class. I had to work my butt off to get an A. Be prepared to studystudystudy. Dr. Martinez is very friendly and engaging. Her tests are extremely hard with difficult wordplay as well as mark all that apply questions which made me tear my hair out. I don't know that I would recommend her but I think she's a good teacher.
The exams are very difficult bc they are not worded the way we learned them.Study EVERYTHING she offers and pay attention to EVERYTHING she says even if you don't think it's important, IT IS. Also, some of the slides on exams are cartoon pics, which is not fair bc they are hard to decipher. Turn in papers out of order, zero;forget to sign, zero.
She is a great teacher. She is very helpful during lab and office hours. She will not directly answer questions but she will explain it and give you clues. Overall Bio 430 is a really hard class but she is a good teacher and her personality is not intimidating and she is approachable
I don't see how anyone gets an A in this class the first time around. The things he asks and expects you to The things she wants you to know know are ridiculous...things you would never need to know unless you were a MD specialist. Way too in depth for a beginner course. Very nice person but super picky and a tough grader...not fair as stated
Unless your planning on being a zoologist don't take her. Lecture and lab exams occur simultaneouly (about 140-170 questions!). Way too much material to know for exams, plan on 50-70 hours of preparation for each exam. Good luck.
By far the best professor of my college career. After transferring to CSUS I was disappointed that my upper division courses didn't even compare to her zoology course. I learned more in that single class than all other biology classes I've taken. Also the toughest class but now I work for CA Dept. Fish & Wildlife and she prepared me well. My fav
She is by far one of the best professors you will find teaching this class. Zoology is not an easy subject, thus you will have to study to get an A, but for the very few of you willing to do so, an A is easily achievable. Dr. Martinez knows a lot and will teach you a lot. I definitely recommend her if you want a future in Biology.
Zoology with Dr. Martinez was amazing. Concept wise not difficult, it is an almost pure memorization course. If you voice record the lectures and rewrite your notes following the recorded lecture you will do great. She really goes the extra mile. Heck she posted so many photos of lab dissections it wasn't even necessary to google.
This is a genuinely interesting class with a great professor. Martinez really knows her stuff and encourages the class to participate during lecture. Tests were easy because you feel prepared going into them. Talk about a breadth of knowlege, though. You will learn a lot.
Professor Martinez is an awesome teacher. She really knows her stuff and is always energetic. She gives at least two quizzes everyday;easy extra points to help your grade if you know your stuff. This is a hard class so be prepared to study and pay attention. If you ask a question, you will end up answering it yourself, which is actually very helpful!
This class was very intense, she grades hard and there is a lot of detail to cover. She does not give you daily homework, instead she gives you a schedule in the beginning of the semester that gives you your schedule for the year. You have to print out every lecture, and even lab handouts are given in class so be prepared on ink and paper.
Professor Martinez is a wonderful professor. She has an approachable and bubbly nature. She is very helpful whenever you take time to seek help. I recommend coming to her office hours; she won't answer your questions but will make you answer them. She focuses greatly on critical thinking. So basically, be prepared to work your butt off for an A!
Professor Martinez really made me love bio all over again. The way she teaches makes it so much fun. Though lectures are long and detailed, it is so worth it because you learn so much. She is extremely helpful during office hours and is really there for you. She is one of the best professors I've ever taken. Love her!
This is a very intense class. Not only does she make you stay in class for the full 5 hours every class, but you are expected to do a lot of studying outside of class. There are many details that you need to learn and perfect. There is a lot to learn in one day, so if you miss a class you are screwed. The class usually consists of lecture and lab.
We all know this class is hard, but if you put great effort you will pass this class. She gives long study guides, grades on curve from the highest 3 scores, tough exams and tricky questions, there are prequizzes, quizzes during class, post quizzes, you have to stay for entire class period to get full quiz scores. Study hard!
I took a summer course with her. She has high expectations and we had a quiz each class. I only spent a few weeks with her, but it was my favorite class at ARC. I am looking forward to her Zoo class. She's very sweet and very active. Field trips to the aquarium are her thing. Make sure you understand your phylum and take GOOD notes. TAKE HER!
Hardest course Ive EVER taken but Dr Martinez is the BEST! Had to work my butt off to get an A. If nursing major make sure you only take this class alone. Never tells answers if you ask. She makes you work for it. Form study groups or you probably wont do well. 5 lab/lecture exams. Prequizzes weekly. Pop quizzes daily. 30pts EC. MY FAVORITE PROF!!
Martinez is a fun professor, but she expects you to know a TON of details. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. My advice is to study the lecture notes at least 5 days a week, and to go to at least one study/Beacon session a week. Do not let yourself fall behind.
Extremely time consuming class, anyone can get an A in my opinion it's just deciding whether or not it is worth the effort and/or time that is required for it. Don't stress about the constant pop quizzes just ensure that you are on top of the material because cramming is not efficient. Tests are where the points are.
If you have to take this class DO NOT take it with her. She makes the class ridiculously difficult for no reason. Her exams and lab practicals are almost impossible to score well on (unless maybe it was your only class). She doesn't answer questions clearly, and her lectures are all over the place. There are 3-4 quizzes per class period. AVOID
It was extremely difficult but she was amazing. If you want to pass/get an A, she will help you. She is very helpful if you want it. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND ASK QUESTIONS ON WHAT YOU ARE CONFUSED ON! She may give exam/quiz questions based on what is asked during OH. Don't be afraid of all quizzes she gives throughout class, just read past notes!
Martinez makes this class way more difficult than it needs to be. Lectures are vague, exams are pin-point specific, her notes do not prepare you well for the exams. So many quizzes during class (up to 5 per session), and her exams are five hours long and so detailed that only two people get A's and the rest C's or below. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Martinez makes zoology insane. I study so much and am still barely passing; I'm doing way better in OChem and Linear Algebra than in her class, and I study for zoo more than the others. So many quizzes and the exams are continually terribly scheduled. We had an exam the day after coming back from a weekend-long camping trip. AVOID at all costs.
I am rating Martinez so high because she is honestly a very nice person and I enjoyed listening to her lecture. Overall, this class is challenging and was not particularly my favorite. The lectures are very long and tedious and the labs are sometimes quite boring. Beware: Martinez is scary good at writing multiple choice questions that will confuse
The class itself is tough sure, but you're in college suck it up. She doesn't just hand out A's because, again, this is college. Don't skip class. You'll miss lecture, you'll miss quizzes, you'll miss points. Be an adult and commit to the class that you signed up for and you'll do just fine.
Professor Martinez is one of the best professors i've ever had. She makes zoology so fun and enjoyable, I wanted to study for the class. The tests are tough, but if you put in the time to study it's not hard to pass with an A or B. Just stay on top of studying, ask questions, and you'll be fine.
She test only one lecture material. Her lectures and expectations are very clear. The class is not easy but she works hard to help you do well. Study and you'll be fine.
Martinez is an EXCELLENT professor. She is the most helpful teacher I have ever encountered and truly cares for her students. Work hard and you can easily succeed in her class. Ask her questions and go to her office hours and you will do fine.
The test questions are taken directly from the labs and lectures. She makes her expectations very clear. You don't need a text book. She is friendly and approachable. You need to study but she makes what you need study very clear. I took her Bio 420 and 430 classes and highly recommend her.
This professor was way too hard! For an "entry" level bio course she makes the class extremely difficult. BEWARE OF POP QUIZZES! Would give like 5 in one lecture/lab. 2 part exams HARD. MC exam 50 questions Lab50+ study guides were given, practically useless. I ended up dropping the class because I did not have the grade I wanted. AVOID HER!
Avoid taking her at all costs! I know Bio classes in general are hard, but this class exceeded that expectation. Homework assignments are in packet form with so many pages that they barely bumped my grade up. Study guides were useless, because most material wasnt on test. Do yourself a favor and choose another A&P teacher.
Lots of small quizzes that can mess with your grade. Minor details are put on the exams not the big picture ideas. Isn't considerate of different learning styles.
Martinez is AMAZING! She really cares about helping students understand the material within lecture and lab. Office hours are a MUST! Utilize any campus tutoring resources such as open lab, stem center, and beacon tutoring to help yourself survive in this class. It wasn't an easy course so make sure you dedicate a decent amount of time to studying!
Martinez is amazing. She is a tough teacher, youll work for your A. But based on what she taught in A&P 1, the second round was super easy. She will prepare you for your future. You will learn and UNDERSTAND and be able to apply your knowledge. She curves her exams and gives extra credit. I wish I could have had her for A&P 2. I loved her class!!
I love prof Martinez. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Clear and fun lecture to keep our attention. Clear on what she wants us to know. Prepares us for Bio431. About 6 HW assignments per unit and she grades on completion and following directions (not correctness). 2 part exams are hard but put in the time and effort. 10/10 recommend. Take her!!
The way her tests are worded makes them really difficult. Record her lectures because every little detail is important. Towards the end you had to do a lot of the learning yourself because she just rushed through the lecture. But for the most part Marlene is a pretty good and caring person.
Professor Martinez is the most caring professor I have had. The class is hard. Worked my butt off to get a B and Martinez did everything she could to help me. Genuinely cares about her students! Take this class alone and put 100% effort in and you'll be prepared for Bio431. 11/10 would recommend this professor.
Horrible professor to take during a pandemic!! She has become increasingly difficult with her tests and assigns way more homework. She isn't trying to be lenient as relatives are dying. She just expects you to be solely focused on A&P. She has stopped trying to teach and anticipates we will teach ourselves. Do yourself a favor and don't take her!!
She is extremely difficult, tough grader, and get ready for pop quizzes. She doesn't cover all material on tests. Her study guides are just a waste of time and will make you over-study. I'll not recommend her.
Pandemic semester. She was never clear on instructions, expected us to teach ourselves, gave way too much information and not enough time to study it before the exam. The material is brute force memorization and she was not good at structuring it. I loved her at the beginning of the semester but would not recommend her online class.
Ridiculous amount of work. After class went online, we taught ourselves mostly. Didnt know grade going into final (most tests/labs still not graded). Made the class harder after going online. Study guide/tips no help. 4 hour + final exam. Avoid taking her class if online (she doesnt like it and you will suffer because of it).
Her online exams were horrendous and long and draining. Several parts, and given 5+ hours to do all parts because you'll need all the time you can get. I never knew what my actual grade was going into every exam, including the final. This class is required for my major but I learned nothing, try looking at FLC or even Sierra College.
she gives exams and tests questions on things she never taught. she gives easy quizzes and she gives hard exams and tests you will never recover from. She said " If you can pass my class you can pass any biology class." I won't advise anyone to take her class because she makes sure she frustrates her students with her tests and exam questions.
Textbook necessary! Do EC (max 30 points). Watch crash course vids + do tutoring. Befriend people in class. Takes her a while to grade tests but she curves them. There will be pop quizzes even online. A very difficult class but try to be on top of things. Don't be afraid to email her for clarification or help. Beware she may go over time online.
She uses Proctorio for exams, which uses your video camera, forces you to share your screen, and listens to you. 5 lab + lecture exam. Study pictures for the lab and rewatch her lectures for the lecture exam. She offers extra credit. Makes you work for your grade and never answers qsts directly. Throws in cool random facts during lecture.
Ridiculously difficult exams that you will never able to get good grades( she did curve because literally everyone is failing). Exams covered materials that she never taught during lectures. A lot of homeworks but they won't help you much with your grade. Even worse after this class went online, would not recommend her, period.
Taken during pandemic semester- only half in person w/ her. She's extremely caring and wants the best for her students... especially if it means putting them through the gauntlet. I feel more prepared to teach myself at a true 4 year level than I ever have. You'll need to have a solid study/accountability group. Hard choice to recommend again.
Terrible terrible terrible!!! So many homeworks that have no help to you on her tests, her exams are 5+ hours which is insane, and she does not care about you (at least in my experience) I email her about something, and she wont even respond to it! Ive never seen a teacher like this, please do NOT take her as she is the worst teacher Ive had.
Professor Martinez is an extremely tough professor. She seems to find humor in having mass amounts of students fail her class. We all have had a hard time adjusting to online school, however, she seems to be very lost on how to conduct her class online. She gives extreme amounts of work and her test are impossible to pass. Do not take her classes.
Look, this is a college A/P course, it is going to be difficult! But Dr. Martinez will always be ready to take your questions/ struggles etc. in a caring and non-intimidating way. 5 lect/lab proctored exams, tons of extra credit, provides clear recorded lectures, helpful quizzes, helpful office hours, BUT challenging exam questions. Fave prof ever!
Dr. Martinez is kind, but I don't agree with the way she runs the class. This is an online, difficult & intensive course. Her exams are a massive part of your grade, while homework assignments only consist of 3-7 pts. What?? I've never seen a prof give so little pts for HW. Study guides don't help while surprise questions appear on exams.
Do not take this class. You teach yourself & exams are extremely hard. She gives out a ton of homework & they do not help at all on the exam! Her study guides don't help one bit & wastes your time. You will mostly be in break out groups on zoom for students to teach themselves. There's a reason why her class are always open during enrollment.
Very knowledgeable&passionate about Biol. Willing to help outside of class, but will question your knowledge. Make you work your grade, which I like but biol is already a hard subject & she does not make it any easier. Gives ton of hw that is worth so little & doesn't help your grade. Exams are worth more than half of the overall grade. Don't take!
Dr. Martinez is a nice lady but this class is RIDICULOUS! So unorganized! Everyone in the class is clueless as to what she wants and expects! Literally puts everyone in breakout rooms instead of teaching her class what she knows! SO much homework that interferes with study time as the homework does not help with studying or exams! DO NOT TAKE!
At first before taking this class looking at the reviews I was discouraged about taking Professor Martinez but I am glad I did, this class is not easy but if you put in the work and go to office hours and ask questions and do your work you will get a good grade, Dr. Martinez really cares and does her best for you to understand the material
Tough class regardless of the professor. She holds office hours twice per week plus one on one appointments if needed. Exams are curved which is extremely helpful. Took this with microbiology and got A's in both. Doable you just have to put in the work.
She's trash bro dont take her shit my friend is failing cause of her and she's the most smartest student in her school and this professor makes it very hard to even be in the class with her 3877483 pages of homework every night. Trash trash trash DONT TAKE .
She helps you talk through the material in your head. I feel like she prepares students well, in an encouraging way.
Dr. Martinez knows her stuff and shows passion when teaching. She cares about her students and how they do in class, going far enough to find different ways to help students excel in the class. However, I wouldn't recommend working and taking on other classes while being in the class if 5 hours of studying per day is too much to balance.
Class was on campus but teacher did not lecture during semester. Had to watch online lecture and basically teach self. Any questions We did have received a " what do you think the answer is". Quizzes are easy. Test are crazy hard. Had people breakdown and leave test kinda hard. Certain questions not covered in lecture or class or on study guides.
5 units. Never taken a bio course? May help: -Intro to Bio -Medical terminology -A genuine enjoyment of the pain that comes from learning. This professor has a clear outline of what is expected, what is due and when it is due. Show up prepared, utilize everything she posts & find what works for you. She was available for any and all Q's.
Dr. M's class prepares you well for the rigor of the healthcare field. She truly cares about helping students understand A&P and improve critical thinking and test-taking skills. Spend focused time with the material from day 1, take questions to office hours and tutoring sessions, and join a motivated study group to talk through concepts = success.
College lvl A&P is obviously not an easy class but Dr. Martinez genuinely cares about her students and their understanding of the concepts taught in class. She gives out lots of extra credit opportunities so make sure to get those done. She really wants you to understand the material and provides many outside class sessions to ask her questions.
Hard class for sure, you must put in hard work. Great professor, she really prepares you for real life experiences and future classes.
I can't say enough great things about Dr. M. She is a joy to be around and truly cares about both the subject and all her students. A&P is hard regardless of who you take it with, but she is ready to answer all questions and help students work through difficult concepts. She makes A&P relatable and fun and she is willing to work with you.
She really cares about her students learning the material and will happily reexplain things. She has lots of office hours and tutoring opportunities. Can get up to 30 extra credit points. There is a quiz almost everyday but that helps prepare for the test. She posts past lectures and other resources to preview/review. Great professor!!!
pros- offers 30 point ec, has lots of office hours, lab portion is easy. can get extensions on hw. is sweet cons- kinda tries to trick you on lecture exams. lecture exams are hard, pop quizzes, gets behind on grading. doesnt drop any scores, doesnt curve much even though most fail her lecture exams. no notes used for exams. wants a LOT of detail..
shes sweet! offers ec. Here's the thing. shes NOT clear on the question she asks on exams. she words things weird and when you ask her to rephrase, she just repeats it. there's pop quizzes. we've taken the final already and she still needs to put in quizzes from 2 units ago. if you do good your grade barely goes up, if you do bad it drops!
BIO 430 is a challenging course, PERIOD! Dr.Martinez is AMAZING! SHE'S HARD! BUT she's only preparing you for what comes next ! Lecture Exams are Tough. She requires a lot of detail, BUT like I said she's preparing you for the next course. Go to Office Hours, & Beacon tutoring. Put in 30hours or more! She cares about her students success. Kimora
Seriously one of the sweetest professors out there. Yes, her lecture exams require a lot of detail and have SATA questions, but there's opportunities given to help you get the grade you deserve (such as extra credit and office hours). Pop quizzes and regular quizzes almost every day. Lab exams are easy. Do the study guides! attend office hours!
Dr. Martinez is a great teacher, and I learnt a lot. That said, tests are very difficult and require memorization and a full understanding of concepts. Homework is on you to track and complete. She gives extra credit opportunities and will curve some tests, but that is it. My only complaint is that she would not round my grade from an 89.3 to 90 :(
I'm writing another review because of how amazing she was as a professor. She's so kind, almost like a mother figure. take her if you have the chance! definitely a hard course, id come home panicking because i thought I failed the exams lol. Ask her for help! *there was only 1 open note quiz, not all pop quizzes are put into the grade book*
I just want to say how amazing and caring this professor is. Dr.Martinez is. I can write a whole essay but to sum it up: She's very kind, very loving, very motherly, very funny, very knowledgeable, very helpful, and caring. I fell in love with Biology because of her because she makes it so fun! I completely recommend her but know to work hard!
Martinez is very encouraging and curves all exams. She has a lot of homework and study guides and long lectures but she provides amazing resources and she responds quickly to emails and has sufficient office hours. Amazing teacher, super fun and laid back, she's understanding and will always encourage her students. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Professor Martinez is amazing! Yes, the course is difficult, but she makes the class so much better. She recommends group studies (which really helped), not a lot of homework, and provides lots of extra credit. I would definitely recommend.
Dr. Martinez is very kind and understanding. Highly recommend to take her. 1-2 quizzes a day, lecs are long but interesting, curves the first 3 exams. Lots of extra credit opportunities, make sure to go to tutoring. I suggest previewing material before and after class to get the best possible grade. Study 30-35 hours a week for this class
She explains things very well, has great online/in-class resources, & is a very present help. However, this isn't an easy A. Attendance & studying are essential. Several topics & exams with barely any breaks. Her exam/quiz questions are also very tricky at times. She makes all of this 10x easier than if you took a mid professor. Highly recommend.
She is a great person and great at teaching, but I would say the most helpful part of her class is to go back and watch her online lecture videos from covid. She goes super in depth on the videos and covers a lot of the questions from the study guides. To succeed, I would suggest watching her videos before the lecture and in person for clarity!
Professor Martinez is the best at explaining concepts! If you don't understand something, she takes time to explain it to you and she really only wants success for all of her students. She's very motherly, loving, funny, and just the best professor you'll ever find in ARC!! She has tons of EC and office hours! Study 30+ hours, be curious!
This professor is the best out there! She is incredibly knowledgeable and mother-like! Her lectures are very easy to understand and she answers any questions and is super approachable! Daily quizzes and lots of extra credit offered! 30pts max. Exams are confusing cus of her wording. Just ask and she'll reword them. 20-35hrs/weekly studying to pass!
Don't get me wrong , this professor is really nice but expects you to literally live in anatomy in order to pass her class. Good luck taking this class with other classes, you won't have time to work outside of class or have time for normal day to day responsibilities. The quizzes everyday are too much and her exams are super confusing .
Everyday quizzes but I love them since they help me prepare for the lesson beforehand by stressing me out haha. I can't thank her enough though as she is the best professor I've ever taken than any other biol professor in ARC. She is kind and pretty lenient. Amazing lectures, makes things easy to understand!
This professor helps you memorize and understand concepts as well as she can teach you. Her class is actually less demanding than the other 2 professors I've taken for Biol 430. She's not the easiest as Biology is never easy, but you can at least sleep at night in this class. Clear expectations, very organized, and enough hw for practice.
She is a really good professor. She really wants her students to pass. It is an A&P class so it is bound to be difficult but the professor tries her best to make the load easier. Just pay attention during lectures and make sure to take good notes.
She is very nice and very helpful if you have any questions. This class is very intense and you will need at least 20+ hours a week of studying because you need to learn every detail in order to pass with an A or B. Just make sure to watch all her lectures and take notes, and also take advantage of her extra credit. Not meant for procrastinators!
She's kind, but my only issues were the hard exams and long lectures. Sometimes confusing instructions. 2 exams in 1 day: lect. & lab. She does her best to communicate, but the amount of time and dedication depends on you. Get ready to study every little thing, sometimes its not on the exam. $$$ books and supplies if needed.
Tells you that you will need to spend 30+ hours on the class per week. Also will give the whole class quizzes and more work if others leave early or behavior does not meet her standards. I have never been treated like a kindergartener so much in my life. If you do not live and breathe this class it will be taken out on you. Also 4+ hour long exams.
Authoritarian. Passive aggressive. Gives pop quizzes. Doesn't provide keys. Writes atrocious exams. I could be wrong, but she seems like she's constantly on the verge of a mental breakdown, holding onto her sanity by a thread. Seems clear that she takes her insecurity out on her students. I would not recommend taking her class if you can avoid it.
Very kind & great at lectures. You have to buy two textbooks & Pearson subscription which are pricey. Four long lecture and lab exams are taken the same day which include multiple choice, fill in the blank & short answer questions. Curved all exams and included extra credit questions. Group lab assignments. Pop quizzes with extra credit questions.
Professor Martinez is a kind and helpful instructor. Her lectures can be challenging, but paying attention and using resources like unstuck ai for study prep makes the class manageable. Expect daily quizzes and extensive studying, but she is committed to her students' success.
TOUGH GRADER. The course structure feels overwhelming, and by the end of the semester, a large portion of the class has dropped out. Overall, it's an extremely high-pressure environment, and I would not take this class again due to the difficulty and workload."
I recommend this professor, she is really great, kind, and helpful. Use opportunity to get extra credit, be ready for almost everyday quizzes, and long lecture +lab exams the same day. Course is hard, but you can pass with her. I am writing this review because I chose her after I read reviews, and I am thankful that chose her class. She is great!!!
She is one of the most caring professors I've ever had & genuinely wants her students to succeed. While this course was hard, as it should be to foster real learning, she provided opportunities to excel. Her approach pushed me to work hard, but the effort was incredibly rewarding. I feel confident that this course has set me up for future success.
This's been my favorite class that I've taken in college so far! Yes, the topics are difficult and require a lot of studying and reviewing, but Dr. Martinez makes this class so fun and gives you so many opportunities to succeed. There are a lot of short quizzes throughout the semester, but they're easy points, so don't waste them. Highly recommend!
This class involves a lot of effort, so don't expect it to be easy. There will be many quizzes, but she will tell you exactly when and what will be on the quiz. Need Top Hat for homework. She is caring and wants her students to succeed, so ask questions. You can earn up to 30 points of extra credit and gives you breaks throughout the class. STUDY!!
This is a hard class but Professor Martinez outlines what you need to do to succeed, she is very fun and passionate about helping her students learn the material, just be prepare bc the class itself is intense and requires a lot of effort and learning on the students part, pay attention in lectures but study outside of class.
Took her class in '24, and now a year into being an NPB major at UC Davis, I still use what she taught. I didn't love how hard she pushed me then, but now I'm grateful. My upper-division courses are easier because of her. I feel like Louise from Bob's Burgers realizing she likes Ms. LaBonz. If you actually care about learning, take her class.
She may have studied animals but she is not an animal lover. If you actually care about animals, that will bother you. Anyways I studied a lot for this class and got a B, wish I took it elsewhere. The only thing I really enjoyed was the bird quizzes.
so caring and knowledgeable, always willing to adapt and always looking to improve for her students. checks in with everyone and makes sure that everyone is succeeding. lots of memorization, and she is a bit spontaneous. quiz every day (sometimes more than one), but if you do the pre-labs they're not difficult at all. extra credit!
