First, he's gorgeous! And he's SO intelligent. He's also easy to approach, very helpful, funny, and nonjudgemental. You'll learn a lot because you'll be captivated by his looks and his knowledge.
Dr. Blaine lets his persistent female students talk him into giving them better grades than they should have earned in comparison to is male students.
OMG yes, he is so hot and he knows his stuff really well. He is very helpful and is very approachable. The classes are hard so be prepared to work!
Intelligent, helpful, funny. Lectures can become monotone but keep listening, he knows his ****! You will need that info for the exams and papers.
Dr. Blaine knows and loves his subject. I don't think he favors a specific gender but females did dominate the classroom.
Hot, Hot, HOT!! Blaine is the consummate professor. Good looks and brains to match. His lectures can be boring just like his clothing. But, he makes for it by his affability, personality and wry sense of humor. He may be "****" though.

Rather boring
If your are a girl, you will get an easy A+ .. Guys, find your self another Teacher! This is a **** teacher to say the least
I don't think he's ****. Yes, there are typically more girls than guys in his classes, but he was cool to me (a male). Do what I did and write with a more masculine edge: he's probably sick of enduring girlish bilge every semester.
Welcome to Bible study! If your down with Jesus, he's your man. Non-Christians, beware - the class will suck ass.
The previous comment is crass and uncalled-for. If you do not study Milton in the context of the Bible as Milton understood it, how will you possibly understand Paradise Lost? Dr. Blaine is an excellent professor and knows his subject.
He isn't hard at all and he is definately easy on the eyes. He can be boring at times, but staring at him is very exciting (if you know what I mean)! Girls, take him for the eye-candy if nothing else! Guys, stop hating! He is a real cool guy too. You just need to get to know him.
So. Hot. Whoever thinks he's doing Bible study was way off - Blaine isn't even Christian. You don't do much at all. Just enough to understand context. Very informative, brilliant guy, and hot. The total package.
Brilliant. Interesting. Personable. Funny. Dr. Blaine is particularly gifted at breaking down difficult concepts for students, so that the whole class functions at a higher level. His knowledge of subject matter is amazing. Absolutely one of the best professors here at CSUF.
Dr. Blaine is impressive and truly brilliant. He's not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something, which I find endearing. Dr. Blaine is also very down to earth and approachable. He'll help you in every way he can and creates a friendly classroom environment. He'll be teaching abroad this Fall, but I encourage you to take him come Spring.
Very Helpful
Fun and interesting class as long as you know someone in it. Teacher is very enlightening and motivated.
Pfof. Blaine is deffinatley a hottie, and he has a sense of humor!
The subject matter of the class was rather boring and very Christian Oriented, but that was the subject matter. He did a great job of making sure it didn't become a religious debate between students. He broke down the subject so it was easier to understa
Blaine as a professor and a hottie are both severely overrated. Yes, he knows everything about Milton, but he does not try to make his class interesting and shows almost no interest in the students. This is one of those classes that you never actually have
I agree. Blaine is a SMarty. If you know what I mean-y. Don't take him unless you're a lady. He can be condenscending yet always intriguing. Don't be fooled by his wealth of knowledge. Keep in mind he was only schooled by UCLA Wannabes; Not the Ivy Leagues! I guess he's a "Hottie" if you're into Southern guys like Abraham Lincoln. Say Amen, Transy!
I was disappointed in the course, but I'm still not really sure if it's because I hated Paradise Lost or because I didn't like Professor Blaine. Maybe both. I was very confused, and even though I paid attention in lecture I still had no idea what was going on. I usually do well in English lecture classes, but Blaine lost me. I was terribly bored in the class, and I didn't think Blaine was a "hottie" ^^; But he wasn't awful. I had a mediocre experience with Dr. Blaine.

Blaine is super cute. He is funny and good to look at which certainly makes it a good class. He also knows what he is talking about. The papers a graded fairly. I'm taking him for two other classes.
He is very understanding and generous w/his time. Always available when he is needed.
dr. blaine is smart and funny, and it dosen't hurt that he's hot. to bad he's my professor. p.s. he does not grade unfairly
Well, I'm one of those insane people who actually liked Paradise Lost and understood it, so Dr. Blaine and the class weren't as horrible as some people made it out to be. Dr. Blaine is incredibly helpful and very understanding. He encourages all interpretations but will tell you if yours is wrong if it does not mesh with Milton's ideas.

Fun material, fun class discussions, and fair grading.
Milton is SUPER boring, but Blaine manages to try and make it fun. His lectures can be boring and slow, but if you pay attention he gives valuable information for writing papers and etc. I haven't read one word of Paradise Lost and i'm doing fine with it. Plus I heard he's really helpful in office hours

A mess, very sloppy office, seems lazy, late to class, take forever to grade, & does very little in class. Boring. The students do the presentations, questions, intros, etc. He gives you a test with material you have never seen during the class. Grades hard, with little guidance, what does he want? Young, pretty girls, get preferential treatment.
TOUGH TO GET AN A ON AN ESSAY. TESTS ARE EASY IF YOU STUDY. HE ONLY GOES OVER WHAT HE TALKS ABOUT IN CLASS. HE'S CUTE BUT HAS HIS BAD DAYS LIKE ANYONE ELSE. VISIT HIM ON HIS OFFICE HOURS
Blaine's lectures are driven by student's comments/questions, which makes it hard to pay attention unless you're participating. It can get boring, but it'd be worse if it were super structured, so I think he does what he can to make a boring topic more interesting. I got As on both papers. Tests=super easy if you ATTEND CLASS.
Dr. Blaine is a great teacher - I would recommend him to anyone - he is smart (and really good looking!) He encourages class partipation, but even if someone says something dumb, he doesnt make them feel bad. We had some great class discussions.
Very thourough teacher, genuinely interested in the success of his students. His tests are not that hard, and he is a fair grader. Encourages questions and class discussion, always insightful. Very intelligent, and I have to agree, he is sexy.
Tests involve a lot of passage identification, so keep up on the reading. if you're going to take the milton class, don't pay 50+ dollars for the huge anthology- there are tons of other anthologies out there, most of which are much cheaper. have him read over your essays a week or so before it's due and you'll get a better grade.
I'd definitely would reccomend Blaine. yes, he is quite attractive and super nice. If I was an English major i'd definitely want to have him as my professor all the time. He's not a tough grader and is willing to help if you have trouble.
Dr. Blaine's lectures can be a bit boring unless you do the reading. You can get by without it, but then you don't learn anything. Nothing he discusses is insignificant and he's pretty good with grading papers and he totally approachable. He cares for his students. He IS NOT "nice" to pretty girls-- he's fair.
He is brilliant. But if your not an excellent student then prepare for a B. He is very approachable and has a passion for this subject. Listening to him makes you love being an English/Cptl major a little more. But again - your most likely going to get a B. Its worth it, i enjoyed going to class.
Smug, arrogant, defensive, mumbles, does not cover all the material he has you read. Overrated here, I believe many of these posts are spam. He seems bored with teaching. Grading is vague, what does he want? GPA gamble.
Great selection of material covering a good variety of authors. Lectures not as precise as his Milton, but that just allowed more discussion. Ignore the BS about sex-based discrimination in these ratings. He's a fair guy who expects you to do A work to get an A. If your grades aren't what you expect, go to office hours to fix them.
So I'm not sure what is up with the negative reviews but he is a totally cool guy. He is very mellow and relaxed. Will answer any questions you have about material. I had him for Shakespeare and I am so glad I took it with him. Ignore the bad reviews. It's obvious those people got the grade the deserved and not the one they wanted.
Blaine is a cool guy hands down. He is pretty intelligent which seems to get in the way of his teaching sometimes making lectures seemingly self-absorbed and dull. Wish he would move around during class. He just sits there. Nonetheless, he taught me tons about Shakespeare since we read about 7 plays in the summer session!!!
Yeah, he's hot. Kind of looks like Tom Jane. He grades very fairly, teaches passionately but I suspect he's affected by how much the class is into the discussion. Apathetic class = boring Blaine. He's spontaneous and wants to help out his students as much as he can, which is all you can ask for in a prof.
He used to be far prettier than he is now. That being said, his teaching style bored me to tears. He's excellent at explicating poems, but I've dropped his classes twice because I couldn't tolerate spending three hours listening to him. All of his classes: 2 essay exams and 2 essays. He's a hard grader in the A range.
Blaine is awesome. Let's just say he's on my resume. This class is difficult all by itself, but Blaine takes you step by step. My best advice is to pay attention to the themes he points out while he's lecturing. He takes his essay prompts straight from his lecture. He's Super Helpful. GOOD LUCK
Cool guy, but unless you like teachers who lecture you will hate his class. Especially if it's 3 hours. He sits in one spot and explicates poems and, if no one else talks, he seems to go on forever. I'm going to get a good grade in his course, but steer away from him if you already have problems paying attention in class. I was pretty bored.
Dr. Blaine is a great professor. He cares about what he's teaching and the students. He's also approachable which is really nice. He wasn't boring for me but perhaps those other people were just bored by the subject. Anyway, he's good.
i've taken him 3 times. SHOW UP TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES. He use to be really hot which helped you pay attention, but he kinda let himself go. he knows his stuff. go to his office hours to go over your essay and it should boost that B paper to a B+. Tests are easy. He's tough on papers.
I think those who classify Professor Blaine as "boring" are confused. It's the READINGS that are boring. I'm sorry, Paradise Lost is just SO boring. There's only so much a prof can do to make that material interesting, and Blaine does a pretty good job of it. That said, you MUST read everything to get an A. I got one by the skin of my teeth.
I agree with the fact that the subject is just very dense and can be very boring but he tries his best to make it interesting. The reading's are hard so make spark notes your best friend. If you at least understand the story by the notes you take, your grades on your paper will be fine.
He's super respectful and also challenging
He loves what he teaches & he's enthusiastic, which makes class fun. encourages class discussion, but annoyed if students aren't prepared for class. I need notes to do well. Grades for comprehension, detail of topic on hw. Funny & relaxed & adds fun interesting facts abt topic. Extremely intelligent = sexy was class consensus.
Dr. Blaine is so-so. He gets noticeably peeved when students don't read. He makes funny comments once in a while but is monotone during most of his lectures. If you're really into Greek/Roman mythology and know it well, this class will be more of a recap of basic material. He's not too difficult with grading.
He doesn't care about attendance. Really laid back. Sometimes I would rush into class really late just to turn in my paper at the very end. Reading was our only homework, no quizzes, a few papers, and he gave us study guides for the midterm and final which was good.
English 317, or otherwise known as Milton, can be a very dull class. In Professor Blaine's class, however, Milton is a very tolerable course. Sure, Paradise Lost is not the most engaging topic for a class, but Blaine's insight to the course material makes this class a lot easier to understand. Overall, show up and do the readings...
The subject turned out to be surprisingly interesting. Blaine (or as everyone called him to each other "Milton") was super funny. Easy grader in my opinion. Laid back. He reads you the book practically. I recommend it.
He made Milton very interesting for me. Am currently taking a Shakespeare course from him and he was ok with using different books vs. the one he assigned (Was able to save $90.00 because of this). Very helpful and thorough in his knowledge.
Professor Blaine is an amazing instructor and overall a just very cool, nice guy. He's extremely knowledgeable about the subject and communicates it well, and is so laid back and funny that you really enjoy coming to class. Class is lecture-based with textbook reading, some papers and midterm/final. Ton of respect for Blaine, he's awesome!
Amazing teacher!!! Really nice, funny and helpful. Milton isn't the most interesting class, but he explains things well and makes it easy for students to understand. Take Milton with his 17th century lit class if you can, the history you learn in them is applicable to both classes and helpful. Oh and he's cute with a slight southern accent :)
He is great guy who was funny and helpful. You only have two homework assignments, an essay, midterm which is really easy and a final. HOWEVER, it was a hard class to sit through sometimes. Lectures were not all that interesting except when he went off topic. It's not his fault, the text is awful. He is a great professor though.
Professor Blaine was a good instructor. He was easy to approach with questions because of his friendliness, and if one gets to know him a bit one can see that he is interested in your learning and will help you in ways he can. My advice to future students is to take the opportunity and time he is willing to give you, and you will do well.
Dr. Blaine is just about the nicest person you'll meet. He is accomodating to student needs and extremely helpful. Moreover, although he is incredibly knowledgable on the subjects he teaches, he is not condescending to student ideas, but instead is encouraging and praising in order to inspire growth. He makes an exciting study of 17th-century poets
Love him, hate the material. He does his best to make it interesting so I'm glad I took it with him. He grades you based on 2 papers and 2 exams which is also awesome. He does not take roll. As long as you do well on the exams and papers you'll do great!
AWESOME AWESOME! Best professor I have ad at CSUF. Funny guy and makes the class interesting. Does not take attendance and makes the class the way an English class should be.,decipherable to the reader!
The only difficult part of about this class was having to sit through it. Professor Blaine is very knowledgeable on Milton and is quite enthusiastic when discussing his writings, but I just found the subject mundane. There is little class participation. Just lecture. Two writing assignments one short final. It's an easy class but dull.
I had higher expectations for this class. Professor Blaine is well-rounded on biblical stories and analysis but I felt that the class lacked discussion. Sometimes he seemed ill prepared for class and he would often go off on tangents. He can be humorous at times which make the lectures somewhat bearable.Just understand the key-terms and you're set.
Very good upper-level professor. Showed a great mastery in the Milton. His discussions were sometimes monotonous, but he knew when to introduce an interesting element to capture attention. Very clear in his expectations. Fair grader. Didn't preach or get caught up in religion, which was a relief. Funny guy. Relatively easy final. I recommend.
Professor Blaine did a great job teaching a class that can be difficult during the summer semester. The material was decent, the assignments were fair, as was the grading. If you are looking for a professor who is supportive, engaging, funny, and fair while never coming off as condescending then take his classes! By far my favorite CSUF prof.
Professor Blaine is nice, funny at times, and very understanding. He is very insightful on 17th century English works. Yet I found the material quite boring. Some of the classes were tough to stay awake through. There is very little participation. Lectures are a bit dull. There's isn't too many assignments. The final was not too bad.
Blaine is wonderful! He is so knowledgeable and fun! However, this class is pretty tough. Since it is mythology, there are a lot of things to know and memorize. He has a midterm, paper, and final. The paper isn't too hard, but you have to study for the midterm and final to be able to remember all the information.
Love looking at Doctor Blaine, and listening to him ain't bad either. Take any of his classes! I guarantee you won't regret it.
Super nice guy who cares about his students, but not the best prof. I've ever had. He is always there to help you and responds fast with his emails (and they're genuine too). His lectures are long, but lectures are all on reviewing the reading. I did not read at all and I've gotten As and Bs. 1 paper, 1 hw, midterm and final. Would take again.
This class was truly interesting and engaging. Dr. Blaine is not only hilarious (fantastic dry humor) but he's an expert in his subject and it shows. His assignments are given with the intent to help you learn and illustrate the points he makes throughout the semester. The papers are easily done if you take the time to attend lecture and read.
Dr. Blaine is such a nice caring teacher! Hes ready to help his students when they need it. I came into his office hours and he was so helpful. He was very understanding towards his students. As far as coursework there was a lot to read but he would go over it in class. I recommend taking him
He makes class so interesting and he's hilarious! Be sure to keep up on readings though so you can follow along and take good notes. He's very clear about the content you need to be responsible for on papers and exams. Go to his office if you need any extra help. He genuinely cares about you. Highly recommend!
I absolutely loved Blaine. He is one of my favorite professors at CSUF; also, he's a hottie for being older. hahahahah. Anyway, I took him for Milton and definitely a dreadful class if you're not into religion, but it was really interesting and he always liked my approach and ideas. definitely take !
The content is presented with great enthusiasm and I found Blaine to be rather likable in this regard. However, the reading/writing involved to do well is atrociously difficult--the nearest thing to impossible.
He is an awesome teacher to take for this tough class. He is really funny and extremely smart. A genuinely good guy who will say hello to you outside of class. I was very nervous for this class, but his approach was a great way to learn such dense reading. He grades fairly easy. I can't wait to take him again.
Just an all-around good professor. I had him for 2 classes & would take him again. 3 explications, one 8-pg research paper, one final. Good class for an Eng major.
Blaine is ridiculous. Never replies to emails. Very vague. Drones on and on. Doesn't give specific feedback so you can't fix your essays. His comments consist of "Good point" and "This needs more work" but he doesn't tell you WHAT to work on. He plays favorites BIG TIME, usually the boys get higher grades than girls. Grade is based on only 3 things
Dr. Blaine is one of the smartest professors I've ever had the privilege of learning from - I am certain he knows the etymology of every word. He could be a bit better with responding to e-mails. However, he does a good job keeping the content interesting. Fair Grader. Easy on the eyes and ears.
He's great, responds to emails and is really helpful no matter what type of question you may have. Would gladly take him again.
This is the first class I've taken with him and unfortunately, he hasn't proven to be on top of things this semester. I am currently in his class which ends next week, and we still don't have grades for the first essay that was due 2 months ago. I have no idea what my grade is up to this point. Seems unorganized and unprofessional. Thumbs down
Do not take this guy. Had one paper due the second month of the semester and still hasn't given it back to us and the last class of the semester is tomorrow. If you find 17th century poetry tough and hard to read, do not take him - the way he teaches it is very pretentious and he's definitely hard to pay attention to.
Dr. Blaine is truly inspirational, and wants his students to succeed. He informs students right away that poetry and prose can be difficult to comprehend, so he doesnt assign a lot of reading and takes his time. His teaching style is very formal, this can be very intimidating for some, but is very knowledgeable and intriguing. Visit his office!
I've taken Dr. Blaine 3 times now. He didn't get our papers back to us the last two, which sucked. However, he is extremely accessible, makes older material easier to understand, and the MT/final is easy as long as you listen and take notes. He is extremely intelligent and has a funny, witty sense of humor. He is definitely my favorite professor.
An excellent professor who makes it his mission for you to learn and stay engaged. He puts time into the content each class because he cares about the actual learning, not only test grades.
I highly enjoyed this class. The readings are not totally necessary b/c he the lecture is going over the reading. However, you will get 100x more out of the class if you read. I got an A without doing them though so it's really based on your interest level. He is a passionate professor who gives very kind feedback along with constructive notes.
Professor Blaine is a reasonable man who works with his students to ensure they both learn and earn a grade they deserve. He is very well read in his areas of expertise which make his lectures, though long, very interesting. Would take again
Blaine is a great professor. He is deeply knowledgeable, so whenever you ask a question, he will give you ton of good information back at you. He goes over reading in class in very helpful manner too. I've taken his class twice and I regret not taking more of his classes. Make sure you go to class and you will for sure appreciate him as a professor
the man, the myth, the legend. The reading is definitely necessary but honestly he makes it super interesting even you aren't into Milton or the Bible. Also when we had to move to Zoom he showed us his dogs which was really cool.
Prof Blaine gives really enjoyable lessons/ easy to comprehend/ makes learning fun. He has a southern laid back attitude, and is receptive to differing insights. He is looking for deeper evaluation of texts, not just regurgitation of information he has given. 2 tests, 3 HWs, 2 papers. Marks punctuation/grammar. Reasonable expectations, fun class!
Professor Blaine was very knowledgeable and his lectures made the material much more understandable. He is really nice and very understanding. Grade was made up of a few HW assignments, 2 papers, and a final exam, all take-home.
I took his class in Fall 2020. He is a superb instructor that cares about the effort of all his students. There were 2 big papers and several homework alongside regular lectures. Classes were engaging and helpful. I learnt about many new poets and poetic pieces that broadened my scope on poetic literature. I recommend him.
I really liked Prof Blaine. He is sympathetic, entertaining, and is very knowledgeabl of Milton. For this class, it's important to have a lot of religious knowledge, but he understands that not everyone has that and does not force it onto his student. I enjoy his classes. He is a slightl tough grader, but he knows his stuff so I cant blame him.
I took CPLT 312, I was hesitant at first but decided to give it a chance. Highly recommend! Take Professor Blaine. I took him online, we had one paper, and reading homework. The homework is very straight forward, you do require the assigned textbook. Attendance was mandatory.
Really nice professor. 2 papers, 1 final exam, & HW assignments that were easy as long as you did the readings. Never got our grades 4 our papers back to us until the very end of the semester, but he did make reading Milton easy to understand. Only met once a week, classes were engaging, & it helped to hear what other ppl thought of the readings
You can tell Dr. Blaine is knowledgeable about the subject yet fails to really help students. Emailed him many times regarding grading considering that he never graded our assignments including major papers and exams. Never got a response back(still waiting). He assigned us a final paper with little notice and threw a final exam on top of it.
I took Professor Blaine for Fall 2020. This is my second time having him as a professor and let me just say I enjoy his teaching, he generally loves what he does and you can see it in his lectures. We had a Midterm that was just analyzing a poem of your choosing that was the same as the Final. And then 1 paper.
Super cool guy, assignments are easy if you do the readings, sometimes he takes attendance sometimes he doesn't but it never seemed to matter. Assignments can be completed with readings, heavy lectures, the whole class is lecture he breaks assignments down in lecture they drag sometimes but overall he's an easy grader and chill guy.
Cool dude, does a really good job at explaining the material. You don't need the book if you take detailed notes in class you will be fine.
He tries to engage the class and get everyone talk. Moreover, he tries to get everyone remember important key terms/topics that are important (especially for the papers and final). He is quite forgetful at times and needs a little reminder every now and again, but he is a fair grader (even if he is a slow grader). Make sure to do the reading!
Highly recommend! He encourages lots of analysis and the class is super thought-provoking and will really help you understand the readings. He's laid back but very engaging with the class. There are two papers with plenty of prompts to choose from (one 5-page paper, one 8-page one) and a few small assignments.
Professor Blaine is clearly incredibly knowledgeable in his field and is an absolute wealth of knowledge. That being said, he is very boring. Monotone and long are what i would describe his lectures as. Its not uncommon to find yourself falling asleep. The subject matter of the class itself is interesting but he just doesn't make it interesting.
His lectures were very long but he gives a small break. We had about two homework assignments, midterm and final. He is very funny and cares for his students.
Blaine is a good professor: very knowledgeable, thoughtful, and laid back. While the class can get a little boring, pay attention to what he says, because it helps a lot in knowing what to write and better understanding the plays. Two essays & one final exam, but he's a considerate grader who really cares about what students have to say.
This is my second class with professor Blaine, even though my major is Accounting, I took two of his classes to fulfil GE requirement. He is great! Clear expectations. Humorous and interesting lectures. You will have to read material, but it was not boring (myth from CPLT 315 and bible stories CPLT 312). Attend, even if not ready! Highly recommend!
Lots of reading, he's very excited about the material and loves explaining the readings. Attendance matters, you can only miss 3 classes before it affects your grade. Very few assignments, we had 1 paper, the midterm and the final. He took a long time to post grades, but a he's very fair grader.
