Sure he's hard but he's a good teacher and always available for help
Discouraging, not helpful, unclear, I think he's Al Gore's dad.
Not easy, but you learn stuff, devos at the beginning of class are great too :-)

This guy reads out of the Bible too much and has bad teaching skills
Very knowledgeable teacher, hard to understand his train of thought sometimes
don't believe what everyone says-he's a good prof! EASY!
doesn't explain concepts clearly at all, vague and unhelpful
his teaching methods are hard to follow but he's a nice guy and the class isnt too hard
I'd rather be flogged publically than take that class again. Unless you are a math major, he is a hard, confusing, boring prof. UGH!!
Yes he is difficult, but he's always willing to explain if you are willing to ask. Great guy, i have lots of fun in his class!
I'd rather gouge out my eyes with a splintered wooden spoon than take another class with this man. He's a horrible prof, and his class was mind-numbingly painful.
He's the worst math teacher that I've ever had in my entire life.
I don't know what the heck is wrong with anyone who says that this is a good professor. They are just trying to be nice because his class is DEATH! Good person, professor. Does not make any attempt to relate to students. 95% of class failed. U B the judge

his lectures were confusing and he was the least helpfull prof i have ever had. i learned more in the dining hall then i did in his class
He likes it if you fail...He doesn't like you...he shouldn't be teaching...you shouldn't take his class...I told you so
Eby, had a strong desire to mix his faith with teaching. However, his class was extremely boring, and confusing. I wouldn't take the class.
He was jut so hard and did not seem to care if students passed or failed
Cannot teach. Tests only on concepts he trys to teach in class but then does not give us practice, except homework out of the book that does not go with lectures or tests. Forgets we are not math experts, can't bring subject to our level.Unreasonable, ob
It helps to have done some calculus before. When he goes over a problem, he goes over every part of it in so much detail that you can easily zone out. Tries to explain things. Notes can be hard to follow.
the prof stands at the board and teaches to himself, cannot teach students to save his life.
Eby is an amazing teacher. He makes class very interesting with his tremendous sense of humor. Best prof at Messiah, hands down. I just wish he could tell more jokes
well this man is funny, because he makes the lamest jokes, and every laughs at him for them, which is very entertaining and innocent. That still doesn't make up for inability to teach math and make it understandable to the studente. This teacher spends no time out of class...
very confusing class. notes don't match book information. no interest in how the students perform, very unhelpful even upon asking for help.
Good man, good heart. Not great teacher. I didn't learn much from the class. I worked my butt off to get a B-, and I am more than a B- student. Very hard. But he's not a bad person. Pleasant. Goes to chapel, which is more than you can say about a lot of profs.
for the love of your mom do not take this class with him...wait until you can take it with wilcock...please save yourself the agony...
He was a great teacher, many people feel he is very difficult but if you just do the recommended homework you will have no problem at all. Great guy outside of class, I strongly encourage you to take Eby.
Basically, this class is satanic. Good freakin luck
It would be VERY helpful to have taken calculus before you take this class. Simply because he does not teach or explain anything and you get so lost and frustrated. His quizzes are from the devil. He has 2 problems that cover one topic and if you didnt study that topic you're screwed and you fail:)
Very easy, but really boring, and can be confusing, If you ignore him most of the time and just do the homework, you'll do perfectly fine
horrible teacher
Quality. If you work the grade will come. Eby is not going to give you the grade on a silver platter. You are going to have to study and work hard, but it is worth the effort.
Worst Prof I've ever seen. You can work yourself to death, get all the help you can find, then get to the test and not have a clue what most of it is. Tests are your grade and they look nothing like what he teaches in class or you find in the book.
horrible teacher and arrogant person
This guy is a machine. He is NOT human. He does not care if you pass or fail. In fact, he wants you to fail so that his reputation stands as being tough. He will outright refuse to help you after class. The worst teacher ever. If you are a genius and know the stuff already you will do fine. If you are trying to learn the subject,it wont be from him
Math is not my thing...but Dr. Eby worked with me, and I did well. You do have to work hard in his class, but he rewards your efforts and is willing to help at all times if you ask. Truly, a great professor and a great man!
I think Dr. Eby came onto this website and wrote those positive comments himself. I don't know anyone who has had him who has anything nice to say. I watch the clock and I want to scream. The first part of the class are devoted to his preaching, which frustrates me to no end because I can't stand his theology. Don't take his classes, just don't.
I can honestly tell you he is a horrible teacher. He doesn't care a bit about his students, the hard I tried to get him to help me the worse it got, all I will say is that I will be taking this class again (with a different prof.) and he doesn't care at all. I flat out told him that I have never had this much trouble with a class and my other class
I had him a while ago for this class. He is indeed a little quirky. Stats is confusing but if you've got the smarts you'll be fine.
did not learn a thing. felt like he wanted us to do badly. did not explain assignments well.
this was the worst class i ever took. I ended up dropping it after i failed the first test and the first 3 quizzes, just like half the class. I am not dumb at math he just does not teach it at all. i am taking this class again in the spring with a better professor. I do not recommend him at at all and he should not be teaching
Dr. Eby is very genuine if you get to know him. He is definitely willing to help. I'm definitely not a math person, but with his help, I'll graduate with a statistics minor.
Ruined my GPA
I honestly think he found pleasure in watching us all die a little on the inside every day we attended his class. I enjoyed math until I took his class.
Dr. Eby's classes are not easy, but his tests are reasonable and on the material he teaches. He expects his students to be challenged, but is more than willing to help when they need it. He cares about his students more than almost any other prof at Messiah, but because he expects students to work hard, he gets a bad rap sometimes.
He is both a terrible teacher and person. Enjoys killing GPA's and makes hard work a waste. He should be fired. Worst professor ever, Messiah would be such a better place without his fake personality. NO help, he teaches you nothing, no matter how hard you try. He only cares about his goofy sweaters. BEWARE!
Dr. Eby is not gonna give you an easy A or B. Expect to have to work hard if you are not a math wiz. I had to drop the first time I took his class because I was not on that level Mathematically. But I chose to take him again after a refresher course and I am glad I did so. He makes time in his schedule to help students and he is a good prof.
Despite what many people may say about him, he is a GREAT Stats teacher. I normally struggle in math courses, but Eby did a wonderful job of explaining subjects in a simple and understandable way. He's also a very fair grader and is willing to negotiate a points with you. Overall an excellent professor!
i love math, but his class made me dislike it. he is hard to understand, and when i asked him questions, he just asked me questions in return. i would always find myself counting down each minute until the class was over.
He takes a math class that should be very easy and makes it as hard as possible. Each class you spend around 35 min talking about the same problem that I figure out within 2. And dont bother doing it your way on the test you have to take his 50 step process to each question or you will lose points
He just can't explain the material. In his mind, he makes sense, but to everyone else, he is speaking Latin. When trying to get further clarification on class material, he did not even put any effort into helping me. Instead, he told me to ask one of his class pets, further proving that he can't explain math. Eby, get a new career. You can't teach
Great teacher. I am terrible at math and was scared to take this gen ed but he makes it really easy and puts things in simple terms. Just show him that you are interested and do the homework and you will be fine.
Dr Eby failed me the first time and the only reason I did well the 2nd time was b/c I had the old tests. He doesn't care at all about his students and I would even say gets pleasure out of giving bad grades. Surely, he should be fired. He is hard to understand and the class ends up being about memorization. My advice, avoid him at all costs!
He is one of the nicest teachers I have had at Messiah, but he often doesn't explain things well.
Do not take a class with Eby. He refuses to help his students, and is not willing to meet outside of class. His class is extremely difficult. I dropped the class becuase he was unwilling to help his students. His tests are ridiculous. If you have to take a STAT class I HIGHLY recommend taking it somewhere else and transferring the credits.
Professor Eby is what my friend and I describe as dry. I do like that Professor Eby does a devotion before classes begin, however, sometimes it is a little difficult to understand since he reads in the King James version. Dry jokes, dry class, dry teacher. Unfortunately, Professor Eby is not someone I would recommend.
Dr. Eby is very unclear when he teaches. He wants his students to do things exactly his way and his grading system is really weird, to say the least. I highly recommend not taking his class. If you see him on campus, say hello because he's a nice enough guy.
Eby is not clear in how he teaches and the way he grades tests is a bit ridiculous (you could potentially lose a lot of points for not doing the work exactly the way he does). Only class I've ever failed and am definitely avoiding him when I have to retake the class.
The reviews on here terrified me. Honestly I was avoiding Dr. Eby like the plague, but I took his intro to Stat class over J-Term and loved it! He is very clear on what he wants on tests. If you follow what he tells you you'll be golden! He is really funny, good at answering questions, and he does great devos!
This professor consistently displays a lack of concern towards his students and their understanding (or lack thereof) of the material. He teaches material in a very complicated manner, making even the easy concepts difficult to grasp. He is very unaccommodating and can be downright rude. He undermines students progress instead of encouraging them.
Avoid taking Eby at all costs! He is incredibly confusing with what he wants and he is terrible at explaining things. I had to withdrawal half way through the class because I was failing. After taking the same class with another professor I got an A. It is unfortunate that he is a terrible professor because he is a very nice man.
He is very organized and clear. The material can be boring but thats not his fault. He allows use of a cheat sheet for tests and so you don't even have to memorize the processes. He can be very picky when grading but if you used a cheat sheet than its your then fault. He really cares about teaching and wants to help students succeed.
Dr. Eby is one of my favorite professors I've had. He is very helpful and clear. He can be really funny and I appreciate how he gives a devotional at the beginning of every class. Take good notes and do the suggested HW, and you'll do great! Highly recommend taking him.
Eby is a so-so professor. Some concepts he explains well, but you'll probably sleep through most of his lectures. He'll correct you if you don't speak your answers affirmatively and most of his jokes are pretty bad. He lets you use a cheat sheet for his tests. Test and assignments are pretty straightforward, but he can be a picky grader.
I took Professor Eby for Math 107 and gave a review below that stated he was rather dry, but now taking him again and understanding how he works, I actually really enjoyed this class with Professor Eby. It certainly helped taking this class over Jterm. Just pay attention, do the homework, ask questions and fit as much as you can on the cheat sheets
Dr. Eby is great! This class is hardchallenging cause I mean, it's statistics BUT if you do the reading of the sections, keep your stuff organized, and study, you will definitely succeed in class. Dr. Eby has the funniest sense of humor and he explains everything REALLY well.
Despite being at times confusing, Eby was always ready to clarify and you could tell that he cared about his students.
Excellent professor. Can be a little dry at times but is very good at explaining material. Is willing to help and wants to see you succeed. Test are difficult but cover the most basic and important material for the unit.
Tests are a few questions with multiple parts. If you don't know part of the question chances are you can't answer any of it and since each question is a large part of your overall score you can expect your grade to suffer. Also, be prepared to be confused on all MiniTab assignments.
He is very good overall. If you take good notes from his in class lectures you will be fine. He also allows a full page cheat sheet for all exams in Stat. He has a pretty funny personality as well. He tells you exactly what will be on quizzes and those quizzes translate almost word for word into the tests. Definitely recommend him.
He repeats the same jokes over and over. He is the pickiest grader I've ever met and he makes up points so on your ten point quiz he could take of four points for showing five integers after the decimal point instead of the six he wanted. His lectures seem to last forever, and they're extremely boring. If possible avoid him.
My friends and I made a drinking game (obviously with water and coffee because it's Messiah):Take a shot everytime Eby breaks his chalk and/or everytime he reminds you that the final exam is cumulative. This was the only way we could survive his class.
Eby is one of the pickiest graders at Messiah and is very vague. Depending on your personality, you'll either think he's funny or extremely rude (he has a dry/sarcastic humor). I didn't like him, as I see some of his policies as hypocritical (ex. he references his syllabus a lot but gets angry if you mention it). The TA was the only way I passed.
At first I couldn't understand his sarcastic humor it but then found it quite funny. He makes sure you remember the correct decimal points or write the correct words for the tests. However, I think that was reasonable for an official statistical procedure would require so. Moreover, don't skip class or you wouldn't understand anything the next day.
Lectures seemed to last forever and usually don't make much coherent sense. Eby has a very dry sense of humor which can be funny at times, but he repeats jokes to the point of making me want to throw myself out of the 3rd story window. He is a picky grader and seems to take points off of quizzes for no real reason. Avoid this prof at all costs.
Prof Eby knows a lot about statistics, but I don't think he knows how to break information down so that his students can understand it. And definitely don't take him for an 8am, that's torture, trust me. If you understand stats already then I am sure you'll be fine with him, but if you've never had stats then DON'T TAKE EBY.
After reading reviews I was scared to take Dr. Eby, HOWEVER, he is a very nice guy and cracks jokes. The quizzes are weekly but manageable if you practice outside of class. helpful during office hours and holds extra study sessions before exams. This class is not hard if you apply yourself! You can also use a full sheet of paper on tests.
Dr Eby is a very nice guy and cracks jokes. The quizzes are weekly but manageable if you practice outside of class. helpful during office hours and holds extra study sessions before exams. This class is not hard if you apply yourself! You can also use a full sheet of paper on tests. It really isn't bad.
I loved this class! I felt as though I was fairly prepared and assessed on what I was learning in class. If you do the homework, you'll have no problem on tests and quizzes. At the beginning of the semester it seems like there are a lot of tests and quizzes but it isn't overwhelming and you are prepared well; they give you a good grade foundation.
Eby is a good prof and Im not sure why his reviews are so terrible. Stats is naturally hard so yeah it takes effort, but if you pay attention, its easy enough. And you can have a cheat sheet of notebook paper for the exams.
He's not that bad if you do the recommended reading BEFORE class. He's pretty easy to follow if you've even just skimmed the sections ahead of time. His humor is pretty dry, but if you have thick skin, he's a nice guy. Hard memorization is important for the quizzes. Easy A if you're willing to put in a little extra effort
Dr. Eby is a nice man and an awful professor. He does not prepare the class for the quizzes or exams, and the minitab homework is a pain. He struggles to explain the content/concepts in a way that people with no prior statistics experience can understand. He randomly takes off large numbers of points on quizzes without explaining why.
Okay teacher and a nice guy. Lots of quizzes and Minitab hw's are tedious and a pain. He goes through a massive amount of material in a short amount of time without much explanation.
Dr. Eby is a nice enough guy outside of the classroom, but he is a difficult grader. We had a quiz every week and he would take off points for everything. Eby would be a great prof if you love math but he does not know how to explain things to people who are not math majors.
Dr. Eby is hilarious and does a great job at making a very dry subject fun. Most students complain about this class, but it is not because of him. The subject material is not too difficult to understand, but the class does require work. Being organized is very important as he gives lots of handouts. Exact precise answers are necessary. Cheat sheets
Eby is really funny, and makes some sick dad jokes, but he's not the best teacher. Maybe it's because I had him at 8am, but I don't feel as though he taught very well. Unless you're naturally good at math or learn best by simply copying notes from the board, this isn't the class for you. In other words, don't take this class unless you have to.
Eby is 100% old school. Be prepared to study on your own for exams because he does NOT help you prepare for them at all. Other than his "assistants" help, he does not offer extra help. Don't miss one class because you'll forever be behind. For 90 minutes of your day you will simply copy his notes he writes on the board for you.
Beware this is graduate level material, just slowed down so they can teach it at Messiah. Very intimidating lecturer, but will often stop to ramble on about some random story. Long homework basically every night. No quizzes. Basically impossible to get a 100 on anything. Exams are 3 hours long, but he lets you fix some of your mistakes afterwards.
Hes too rigid. If youre late to his class on a quiz day he will make absolute sure you fail. If youre even a minute late just tell him youre sick and dont show up. Its not worth it.
I don't know him outside of class, so I'm not going disparage him personally, but this was by far the worst and hardest class I've ever taken. Unless you're a math whiz, I'd encourage you to switch to another teacher or take stats over the summer. He does read Bible verses before classes which lightens the mood though. Good guy, horrible teacher.
He loves to call out people during lecture and will not stop until you get the right answer. As long as you pay attention and know what's going on, you'll be fine. You get a cheat sheet on exams so they're not too hard. There's a quiz every week. He gives clear grading criteria and tells you what he wants for exams. Overall not a bad prof.
I love Dr. Eby. A lot of people in my class said that he was boring but if you actually listen in class you'll enjoy it. He picks on the outgoing people in the class which makes in 10x funnier. I really enjoyed stats, even though this was my first time taking it. Once you get used to the way the quizzes and tests are, it gets way easier!
Professor Eby is definitely a smart guy and has good experience in what he teaches, but sometimes he struggles to convey that knowledge. He genuinely does care about the success of his students, but you have to put in the work. There's never mandatory hw problems, but if you want to do well you better do the problems he suggests. Not ideal online.
One quiz every week. You get to write your own cheat-sheet for exams, so it's easy to pass exams. Gives five minitab assignments which require being done on Messiah computers. Boring professor, but generally not a difficult class. Doesn't take attendance, but the notes you take in class are necessary. He doesn't record his lectures. Make friends.
