She is a little bit hard with the class work and lots of homeworks, but the final and midterm exams are easy.
very intelligent, yes she is fast, she has a ton of information to get across. So think fast
do your homework
The subject of this class was really fun. She's a really fun teacher. Makes us laugh a lot. She's not an easy grader, but she's fair. Be ready to work hard.
international students beware!! you will have a hard time understanding cuz she talks so0o freaking fast. fun sense of humor tho and class theme was interesting. hard grader on essays.
SHES HOT, but she wont date students.
a lot of work, and class room ineractions. you get in a big cirlce everyday and everyone says their part of the discussion. I hated every second of it! if you like public speaking 24/7 then its for u, if not dont take this class.
She's really mean and hard. Her teaching style sucks really bad. I would say she's the worst teacher at De Anza. Don't take her if u want to pass and have a good time in class.
The worst class ever won't help students out for no reason and i don't know what people are talking about saying she's cute she sure isn't and she's pretty old. Anyways everyone out there don't take her if u want to pass.
Dont take her,if u wanna pass. She gives out so much hw like its the only class we're takin.HW over the weekend,2chapters of reading,96pgs of poem2read n write a journal, and an essay draft. freakin insane..
Doesn't have much to do with technical communication. Subject matter isn't hard, but her arbitrary rules makes it harder than it should be. Makes you get help from other students, but we're not the ones getting paid.
Registered 4 the class thinking it would be an easy A since I aced English AP in high school, but she's HARD! However, she really challenged me to write quality papers, and the course theme is very interesting. Check her resume online - she's a genius. Take her only if you wanna work hard and learn.
She may know what she's talking about, but she can't teach. She's not realy good at communicating. The teacher I had before her was very helpful and informative, but Miss Reber expected you to know what she was thinking. Not a good teaching style. A nice person, but a terrible teacher.
She is an awesome instructor. Really enthusiastic and gets everyone to participate. The topic is interesting. It is something that everyone can relate to and think about and a make a connection to.
She is an awesome teacher. She is a very intelligent women and role model for women who take her class. At first it irritated me that we had to engage ourself in class discussions, but it ended up making the class really fun and interesting.
One of the best I've had. Knowledgeable, Enthusiastic, Fair, and Receptive.
Rude teacher, not very nice. She doesn't treat you good if you struggle in her class.she favoring student. Don't take her if you want to be mad and endanger of failing the class.I'm so regretting of taking her , but it was too late .It was a mistake of taking her class.
i don't agree with the other comments at all. i got an A in the class summer'04. 5 POPquizzes, 10journals, 2essays, 1group essay&presentation, 1research paper. yes A LOTTA work, but if you DO it ALL & especially READ EVERY night, than you'll be fine. really improved my writing skills. VERY interesting course topics/subjects (on relationships/love)

This woman will work you! Her class is rigorous and teaches discipline. It is not an easy A, but helped prepared me for graduate school. Take her class if you want to learn something and become a better writer.
my guy friend had a really bad experience with this woman this last summer. she was late to class very often, was not available during office hours for help and graded very harshly on the essays. she criticized students' work but did not try to help them improve. don't take her if you can avoid it. teaching was the last thing on her mind.

horrible teacher! misgraded my final grade in the class and almost posted it! I had to prove her wrong to get it fixed. She was my teacher in Spain last quarter- grades essays extremely hard and doesnt provide proper help only shows problems
Doesn't know what she's doing and gets very defensive when questioned. I've never had a teacher who refused to even answer a direct question before. Should be fired.
These bad comments surprise me&are not the Reber I know. Her style is at our level&makes class fun&interesting. Work is designed to help in real world with resumes, coverletters&tech writing docs. It was hard work&sometimes I thot I deserved a better grade but it was all worth it. She gave free points, parties&let us relax on long days. PS: TILF!!!
Ms. Reber is really helpful and nice, her class is hard, if you talk to her she is always willing to help you.
Reber is definitely not easy, but the course is high quality. I don't mind that she has tough standards, but I don't think she explained assignments thoroughly enough when considering how hard she grades. If you're a student who can spend a few hours in the computer lab or have a schedule that allows for a lot of consultation, you'll do better.
She's tough. Gives way too much homework. The homework is supposed to prepare us for the "real world." Most of us already live and work in the "real world," we just want to learn what we need to learn for the application of technical writing. She tries to fit too many subjects into one class. This class, then, should be divided into 3 classes.
Taking EWRT100b with ms. Reber was actully pretty helpfull. She is a little tough, but its for the best. By the end we had finished all requirements while other classes were still doing their final essays. Watched a couple of movies and had two parties. Never lets you out early though. If you have a problem she is easy to talk to.
She's dope. took her EWRT 1A class in the spring of '06. she implemented a technical writing emphasis into her curriculum. makes class much more practical and functional in our personal and professional lives. She taught me to make a resume that helped get me a promotion and a $20,000 dollar raise. my portfolio looks bad ass too.
The class was somewhat hard and a lot was expected, but Reber was really cool and I learned a ton. She's funny and super smart and really cares about what you learn. If you want to learn stuff that really applies to the real world, this class is for you. Also, she throws in parties for fun and takes the edge off.
Awesome teacher. Lots of work, but she's fair and really passionate about wanting to help her students. Lots of fun, too. I spent four hours with her two evenings in a row for twelve weeks. Marietta's a blast, always interesting, with good stories and advice. Great classes, both of them. She's cute, too!
Awesome teacher! Brilliant, a bit hyper, very dedicated to her subject. No nonsense and no B.S. If you do the reading, do the work and pay attention you will do well. If you're a slacker... don't bother!
I came to deanza as a high school student. The class is intimidating, but if you're ready to work and you clear up the instructions, you'll be prepared. Ms. Reber has an amazing personality and I highly recommend her. She keeps the stress off by giving us parties (and we can bring in food for extra credit!)
Reber is a really nice and caring teacher. She assigns alot of homework though. Plus it usually involves having to run to the store to buy the materials. On the other hand, if you do well on the assignments, this class is an easy A. I also like the TWRT emphasis and I learned alot. I recommend her if you're willing to put in a little extra effort.
If you want to prepare for the real world, she will probably be a very good choice. Teaching and speaking are clear. Homework is a little bit heavy but not hard. You will learn a lot about the real world from her class. Teach you practical things, a pretty good teacher.
AMAZING teacher!!!very helpful and def knows what she is taking about
I'd have to say, I struggled in this class with lots of fear and anticipationg when the grades were being handed back, but I was always satisfied with the grade because it reflected my effort. You've gotta try your best in order to succeed in Professor Reber's class. the best part was hump day! we had the best food everrrr.
Professor Reber was awesome! at first I was a little annoyed by her, but i felt so bad after getting to know her. she's a GREAT teacher and she really cares about her students! she made me such a great writer and she's extremely intelligent! she's studied in so many parts of the world and even has her PhD! go professor reber!
She is defensive and not good at what she does. Not helpful at all and has a lot of culture differences that she points out all the time. Assignments are doable but the professor is horrible. I wouldn't take her class if I had a choice. Thinks she is funny but is NOT. Has a high opinion of herself and thinks she is smarter than the whole world.
Nice Teacher. Recommend to take her class if want to learn technical writing styles. The assignments and discussion in class is interesting
Mrs. Reber is a hard teacher. If you like to get talked down to everyday. I feel like all she does in class is yell at us. She knows her stuff, and there's a lot of HW.
I do like Mrs. Reber but there is too much busy work that does not help you learn. If she taught more on writing style rather than make us read a bunch of pointless passages, we would write better!
She tries her best and has moments of self-awareness. She is fair and I learned valuable things. With that said, she is exhausting as a person. She can be so over the top and so self-absorbed. Half the time she is talking she is tooting her own horn. She assumes to know what someone is asking, gets it all wrong, but steam rolls on. Cuidado!
probably the most challenging english class i have ever taken. learned a lot. a lot of reading. if you are not going to come to class often do not take this class! overall great exp!
Shrill, redundant, and irritable. If you want to be a nervous wreck all quarter long, then this is your teacher. Otherwise, Lyn Smirnov is slower-paced and much more understandable as well as understanding: she lets students know that school is third priority after family and work. Perhaps Marrieta could take page from Lyn's book on patience.
Professor Reber knows her stuff. If you work hard you will definitely learn a lot. However, Professor Reber's communication skills are poor. She doesn't listen when you ask questions; she doesn't read emails carefully. This impacted her ability to be helpful. She constantly yells. I felt stupid, incompetent and stressed all quarter.
I took Reber's class even though I'm already an established tech writer. The problem I had was balancing school with work. Her class is like a full time job. I highly recommend to anyone interested in being a tech writer. Her teaching style matches my learning style; unfortunately for me, she had to take maternity leave after just a few weeks.
I took the entire tech writing package at De Anza. Fortunately I had a substitute for the first two classes, or I'm absolutely positive I would have dropped out. She screams, often yelling about things we SHOULD know (that she failed to teach). Textbook passages are pure busywork, no teaching or feedback on if we did them correctly.
She often says "you should know this," "this does't make sense, change it," "all formatting is wrong." More often than not says to go and figure it out on your own. Gives lectures, but doesn't actually teach. Not supportive of student progress, beats down confidence, yells, humiliates, and stresses out. More hours than a full time job for homework.
Her class suits the student that enjoys brute forcing their way through the material. She says she yells for emphasis, but her class is like reading an entire text that is highlighted, bold and all caps. The amount of work v. the true benefit is also questionable. The course reader is mostly just her PPT slides and hard to read. Ironic.
I took Ms. Reber's class online. While I never saw her face to face, I did enjoy the fact that she seemed like she was always there when I needed her. The work was wasn't terribly difficult, but it was hard enough to make me work hard and feel more comfortable with my writing.
Yelling! She yelled in every class expressing her frustration with her class and life in general. Comments were brutal and non constructive. Marks up papers and says "no!" But offers no advice on how to meet the subjective standard she is holding you to.
Ms. Reber is fair and fun. I found her class really informative. She's not an easy A, but if you work hard, you'll learn a lot and can do well. And she really cares about her students. Definitely recommend.
Enjoyed class a lot. Unique themes. Course is set up really well for online. Never met her in person but felt like I got to know her through email and assignments. She is organized and makes it easy to keep up if you just follow along. Really helped my writing.
She's great. Yes she has a big personality and she talks loud because she is passionate and energetic. Really entertaining.
Prof. Reber is a fantastic teacher, she will push you but you will learn and grow from the experience.
She is an amazing teacher. Will take her again. English isn't my favorite subject but really liked some of the stories we read. She is very passionate about what she teaches and some times a little intimidating for what she knows. If you want help with writing she is very helpful. Be sure to read material and pay attention for posting discussions.
I took this class to get technical writing training and start a career in the field. If it wasn't for Prof. Reber's constant support during the semester I wouldn't be a Tech Writer today. She not only provided constructive feedback on the areas of improvement but also recommended multiple ways of addressing them. I use some of her tips to this day!
She is a good teacher Work pretty esay if u follow the outline. 1 midterm 1 final. Quizs on each play. Shows some vids in class. Some lecture info on exams. Points for discussing in class. Reccommend taking.
Taking EWRIT 2 now. Fun class! We have so many great discussions in class and she will really make you a better writer!! She really cares and goes out of her way to make sure you understand what the assignments are!
Marrietta is awesome. I took ewrt1 and ewrt1b with her. If it weren't for those classes, I don't know how I would have survived transferring to a UC. She gave me a great foundation for thinking and writing well. As a professor, she makes the material come to life and she gives the class everything she's got. Can't recommend her enough!
She's a great teacher, works you hard but you get a lot out of it. Fun class, would definitely take it again.
Very specific quizzes on the weekly readings assigned. Don't freak out, you can fail most of those and still get an A. Offers extra credit. Gives honest feedback. She assigns everyone to a group for peer reviewing essays-- very helpful! Don't take unless you have time to do A LOT of reading (seriously, I mean it)
She was an amazing teacher. I want to take all of her classes. She fostered a great classroom environment and it was the first time I have ever enjoyed myself in an English class. You have to put quite a bit of work in(it's totally worth it), but she's always there to support you and give you alternatives if you need them.
Professor Reber has been one of the best teachers I have ever had. I would describe her as honest, caring, motivating, and involved. Sure, you need to put your time in to get a good grade, but as long as you keep up you will get good grade. Cheers.
I recommend this class because it is fun. Often, a lot of teachers bore me to death in class but in this class, I enjoy every moment of it. All my life, I was told that my writing was not good enough by many teachers because they do not follow a certain formula. This class allows me to express my individuality in my writing.
She can be very sarcastic in her emails back to you, but overall she is a great teacher. She cares for her students. Gives you solid reading assignments. Sometimes doesn't call you out when you need to be called out on things and she makes you wonder who it is. not very fond of that trait
This course is not only super entertaining but so is the material. It isn't your typical EWRT class. Do you want a different way of teaching, One that doesn't remind you of your mean grumpy high school English teacher? Well trust me this class and this professor is going to blow your mind away!
Do the work and you will do well, I learned a lot and improved tremendously,
Because the professor is honest and tell you just what she wants and train you for it. If you don't under stand something, go to her like I did and she will explain it to you once mor. I may not be the youngest student. But I have the will power to learn. And believe me in Professor Rebers class I learned. Been at De Anza 5 quarters and she is top.
I loved the stories and anecdotes about her life prof Reber shared and how they related to certain assignments. I believe any one of my friends, or student at the college, would be lucky to have her. I plan on enrolling in her EWRT 2 class.
This class has been amazing because it cares. I just came fresh from high school and to see the level of realism, such as the teacher is a working mom with kids but still has time to read our essays, made me care along with everyone else. I had never seen such a refine class that also is trying to improve itself as I have now in this English class.
Professor Reber is the best teacher because she loves giving me a lot of extra credit
Ms. Reber is hands down the best professor I have ever had! She loves what she does and her enthusiasm is highly contagious! She gives great feedback on essays! Loved her!
This was much more than just an English class, it helped many to heal and learn to analyze their own situations in life. To me, that is the best thing a class could ever offer. Anyone can teach English or how to write, but only those who truly care can teach you how to heal using writing. This truly has been my favorite class of all time.
Ms. Reber is a great online course instructor. I have taken several online classes before but none as involved or engaging as this one!
The online format is very organized and clear. I also really love the fact that Professor Reber was generous enough to email us weekly to remind us of upcoming assignments, due dates, and offering her help. I have never attended a class where a professor would do such a thing and those emails have really helped me stay on track.
Her passion and care for her students and knowledge of the subject matter is incredible. She has an extensive experience and is such an achiever that, I remember feeling a little intimidated at first. She is kind of strict, has an organized and clear work outline and is a fair grader. She makes you work hard for it, which I came to respect.
I can't tell what kind of professor she is in person, but from an online course, it's evident that she really cares about her students. She is clear with what what she wants and even takes the extra steps to remind her students about deadlines. She's very lenient on essays but she gives you very helpful feedbacks.
She's a solid prof, and her class is an easy A if you're good at writing. You still have to put in some work like you would for any other class. (lots of readings/journals/quizzes) tbh she's pretty rude to her students & she gets worked up about pointless stuff thats even not worth getting frustrated for. She yells a lot and its rly unnecessary.
Mrs. Reber is a very kind teacher who loves to talk. She is considerate of every one of her students. But she does expect her care to be met with equal effort. So yes you really should do all the readings! Expect a lot of class participation, and be aware she is constantly improving her program. Also, I hope you really love food! ;D
So many reading, it's is mostly on articles but it was interesting. There are only three major essays, timed quizzes, journals, and respond to three other classmates. She assigns you into groups for peer reviews. She is a tough grader especially when it comes to the essays but gives good feedback on it.
Took her for EWRT 1A and I can honestly say she's the best English professor at De Anza! Trust me I went through a lot!! She loves to talk and really cares for her students. There's plenty of work but not impossible. Not a tough grader if you do your work!! She's very approachable don't be scared of her!! I am really going to miss her!
Reber is an amazing professor to take for EWRT1A. Food is the main theme for her 1A class. 1 quiz, 1 journal and 2 responses to others' journal are all of the homework you got to do, plus essays for mid-term and final. There is also a group project to do near the end of the quarter. Got A coz extra credit is given when I bring food to class.
SHE IS AEWSOME
Glad I took her class. Reasonable amount of work. Due to online structure, lots of articles to read and discussion posts to respond to. Relatively easy grader for essays -- won't give you 100%, but a decent paper can easily get an A-. Gives in-depth feedback on every essay, so you can learn what she looks for when grading. Total sweetheart as well.
I quit my job so i could focus better in her class... that's how much work is given in the class.
Reber is great. She teaches well and loves food. Be warned: THERE IS A LOT OF HOMEWORK AND READING. In my opinion she assigns homework for the average student who doesnt have a job or heavy work load. If you work and have little free time the reading will slowly kill you. 50+ pages due every class plus online articles. Its too much.
She spends a lot of time talking. Her stories are really interesting though and are worth listening to. I never get bored in her class. She tries to keep the class fun and alive all while getting a lot of work done. The work is doable if you just try.
Unbelievable amounts of reading that are both useless and boring. Definitely do not recommend taking this class.
Do you want a different way of teaching, One that doesn't remind you of your mean grumpy high school english teacher? Well trust me this class and this professor is going to blow your mind away?
Enrolled in her EWRT2z and there's so much work and reading going on. I'm also taking 3 other classes so taking this class is not recommended if you're busy like me. Quiz every Wednesday, journal every Friday, and replies are all due on Monday 11:59pm. I get anxious and stressed thinking about the work I have to do for this class every single week
The professor is nice and caring, and she made students find the significance of their culture, family and food, etc. Plus, she made students find the motive of writing. However, there was a lot of homework and reading that students needed to do.
Professor Reber cares about her students and is very pationate about teaching. Quizez are assigned weekly, easy if you read everything. Follow her instructions and you can earn an A. Also, bring treats for extra credit!
Lots of reading, online HW but is very organized. The theme of class is food. Heavily exaggerates its impact on our lives, which gets annoying quickly. A lot of her lecture was review for me (English is one my best subjects). I didn't come to class a lot towards the end of quarter. Work is mundane- but she's reliable and that trumps all in my eyes.
Very caring professor, but assigns WAY TOO MUCH work. Weekly quizzes with sometimes 6+ readings to do. Quizzes are very specific details. 4 essays in total. Prof Reber gives you good feedback on how to improve your essays. She is very nice and easy to communicate with. This class makes you work very hard for an A. She does offer extra credit.
This Professor has no regard for her students. She assigns 110 to 170 pages of reading a week. If you are taking more than one other class and/or have a job do not take her class. YOU WILL SCREW YOURSELF OVER as she has no respect for her students time and lives.
Alot of reading but good professor. They will assign more than 100 pages a week. The discussions are very important. If you commit you will definitely learn something new.
It seems like this is the first quarter Professor Reber teaches an online course because it looks like no one is getting an A. The amount of homework is impossible and the weekly quizzes are a bit unrealistic. Taking a 5 minute timed quiz based on weekly readings is what might bring my grade down.
High workload, but manageable. About 5-6 articles to read + a chapter from the 2 books (free) each week. I'd say this professor was a bit uptight but she is helpful/ nice. You can't get a perfect score on essays but you can make up the points through weekly discussions/ participation. If you turn anything in late, you do not get credit whatsoever.
She is a literal Karen, take her class if you want to get stressed out and do timed essays given on weekends. Not to mention she makes you respond to not 1 bot 3 BUT 10 people for discussions. Gibe you 5 minutes for weekly quizzes and she gives annoying announcements multiple times a day saying the same things. Her whole course teaches you nothing
This teacher has become one of my favorites because she wasn't pressuring students to turn in busy work but assignments that actually helped develop our writing skill. It was a very easy and direct class that didn't stress me out. It was easy to follow along.
Do not take this class!! This class will put your financial aid in jeopardy and waste your time.
I loved how much the professor cared about her students. I had a few troubles this quarter and she was so understanding, helped me solve the problem and didn't make me feel bad or guilty for asking so many questions. Her assignments were clear and if I was confused she straightened it out right away.
Professor Reber made this class fun, she was a great professor and I'd recommend her again and again. The essays were about food, so I was fully invested in the topic. This was the first writing class where I didn't feel stupid and I do believe that's because we weren't given busy or unnecessary work. Everything connected and had a purpose.
I loved this class so much. There was a LOT of reading though, so if you're taking lots of other classes or have a job, be wary of that. She gives amazing feedback on papers, I definitely improved my writing because of her. Her grading is tough, so don't expect A's on all your papers, but it's still reasonable. Definitely recommend!
She was kind when you emailed her one-on-one. Too many assignments and not much regard to the schedules of her students. She grades very tough. I would only recommend this class if this is the only one you are taking and you are unemployed. Would assign hundreds and hundreds of pages of readings.
Whenever I had a question or even if I needed a little extra time to complete something, Prof Reber was extremely helpful and understanding. Every reading was actually interesting and I never felt like I was reading something and just dragging it, which made it better and easier to do good on my essays.
Ms. Reber is a great teacher and her class if well organized and thought out. The writing assignments were thought provoking and taught me how to pay closer attention to the little details I tend to fly over.
Great class.
It was the first English class I've ever taken that talks about real life problems. We got to read different articles each week and analyze real life problems.
I recommend this class for anyone who thinks they aren't great at writing. The essays are graded based on a clear rubric. Unlike some classes where a grade is assigned based on how the teacher is feeling, our essays were fairly graded.
This class has the benefits of an asynchronous course but the professor structured it so well and I was very engaged in the content. I liked the variety of essays.
Too many readings, doesn't take into consideration how much work her students have. Expects students to put at least 15 hours a week aside to do just her work and she really believes that. A bit odd on grading papers, at least for my class it seemed like she didn't know how to read since most my classes feedback had "awkward" or "I am getting lost"
SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER AND ASSIGNS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WORK. But you will learn SO MUCH and genuinely become a better writer. If you are taking this class and want to become better, then take this class. If ur lazy and dont actually want to learn then dont take this class. But I will say that writing is a critical skill to have so might as well
I took this course last quarter and it was such a horrible course I dropped it with a W. She makes the course difficult and impossible to pass. I now have a different professor, the class is a breath of fresh air. Just comes to show how difficult and impossible professor Reber is.
