he says "um" all the time..but he knows what he is talking, GREAT GUY!
He is..um..and great teacher..um...but he...um...says things...um...too much
One day this guy said um....590 times, yes I was so bored I counted
greatprof. loves michael moore. easy if you use the exam study guide
great teacher-very nice & funny. sometimes boring
If he was more comfortable and confident, he'd be great. He will be someday.
He doesn't say um much anymore, he's getting comfortable and is getting good!
Prof. Battani....is a great guy; very nice; well-educated in field; will go far
Nice guy, great prof, and a fair grader
He is a nice guy. He knows his information. He also gives helpful study guides
very intellectual and witty
Very good, helpful, and knowledgeable, papers are hard to get above a C!
he doesn't have a consistent grading scale, and he grades papers too hard
He didn't make class very interesting. He just lectured the whole time.
Great guy, great classes - one of the best profs this university has hands-down.
He's one of GV's best. I loved the class. Not as "unsure" as you might think.
Now With Bill Moyer...
knows what hes talking about, keep up on readings, funny
Straight up smart guy....grades tests /paper hard, and quizzes are EASY!
maybe i could learn if he would stop saying um..aahhh...umm
Nice, smart, funny, good teacher
He grades really hard and doesn't care about his students!!!!!!!!!
Great class, smart guy, expects effort, sense of humor, tells stories/jokes, FUN
EASY CLASS, gives exam questions ahead of time, use notes for online quizzes
Funny guy, I liked the class alot, class wasn't too hard
Never went to class, and studied at home to receive my A, He gives the question
If you got put with him, keep him, he's not too bad
Easy prof. nice guy, just study and you will get an A
Text does not relate to Social Psych. He is not very clear on what he says and expects out of papers & tests. Not really willing to help. I think he decides the grade that you are going to get at the beginning of class based on first tests and papers
hard prof. for this class!! too much info.. not enough time!!
Great guy, easy class, he gives you the test questions before so you know exactly what yo are getting, Loved the class
He let the class vote on the subject we were going to learn. It's a different kind of class. You study for the tests like you are writing a paper - not like how you would study for a normal test. Other students didnt' get that. A's are possible.
This man should be teaching graduate school. Extremely hard to understand and relate to tests/paper preparations. Best advice, get notes off BB and bring a tape recorder!
Extremely boring lecturer and doesn't do much discussion, but he likes to show Michael Moore movies, and at least his 201 is a pretty easy A.
he won't look anyone one in the eyes, not a very personal teacher, he gets to the point.
Nice prof. He showed movies and made class interesting. Looked forward to stress free movie nights. Easy class. Take him!
Not the typical prof, i think that's why some people have issues with him. He let the class decide what we wanted to learn, then he followed up with that. Be in class everyday - get an A. Miss class - you'll be very confused, lesson plans change daily.
He is really passionate about the subject...almost too much. Sometimes we wern't sure what he was rambling about but he does make sense of the subject around exam time. Barbie Nation rocks!!
if there is another prof take them because this man treats students as if they are idiots. if he likes you then you will get a good grade
Great professor. He definitely knows his stuff, and he gives you more than enough opportunities to do great in the class. I'd take him again.
he seems like a pretty nice guy, though he doesn't put much of a personality into his lectures, which can make them a little hard to deal with at times. even so, he knows his stuff and teaches it well.
He definitely knows his stuff. Online quizes can be a little bit tricky, but just use the book. He gives you the test questions beforehand...all are essays so there are no suprises. Interesting lectures and uses power point so it's easy to take notes
interesting class time goes fast. makes it easy to take notes is clear on what to prepare for for tests/exams 3 exams 4 quizzes 1 paper. nice guy willing to help if you ask for it likes discussion sometimes group work
fun class to attend. funny guy. lets you know what things to study for the exam. easy A but you learn a lot.
Only time I ever took a class named after the professor. I took "Social Problems". Seriously, this guy has problems facing students. No eye contact, writes in caps on the board, bites his nails while lecturing. Very strange bird. Obsessed with B
I loved him! Very good teacher. He kept class interesting because he was funny and he showed movies that were interesting too. For the exams he gives you the exact questions that will be on them. Good teacher, good class
the quizzes are easy but he grades really hard on papers and exams. he's also boring more often than not, but overall an easy prof.
Awesome teaching! Class criteria (tests, papers, etc) were good as long as you kept up on the outline he gave you. Made the discussion interesting by including real life examples that could be related to.
Pretty good prof. Classes were organized with powerpoint and quizzes were short. A short paper due every other week on the readings. He can be a hard grader.
Nice guy however was sometimes unclear in his lectures. He would be clear in starting his comments and end up lowering his voice and tone to where it was hard to even hear.
A great professor! I've had him for four different classes. Is challenging, interesting, a good grader, and has many interesting ideas. Is visual in his presentation of class material, maps things out on the boards - you can see the relationships. If you want to learn something, take his class!!!
He is a wierdo. Says um... and uh... before almost everything he says. Grades his stupid papers way to hard. However said he is hot must have been messed up. His greasy gray hair is disgusting especially when he runs his finger throught it...nasty. Trys to be cool by using too many big words.
Pretty easy class - 6 quizzes (MC), 6 papers (1-2 pages MAX), and a final exam (Essay/MC). As long as you show up to class and take notes, you shouldn't have a problem. Great prof. who really knows his stuff and genuinely cares about his profession.
An easy grader on papers, quizzes are easy, however sometimes he is hard to understand and the exams are really tough! I would reccommend a different teacher.
Firstly, only take his class if you usually go to lecture! he talks about everything you need to know. There's and online quiz every week, 3 papers (1-2 pgs), a midterm (essay and mc) and a final (essay and mc). Your entire grade is pretty much based on the two exams, but as long as you do well on them you'll do well in the class.
I think he is nit-picky and not clear on what he is looking for. Online quiz questions are confusing, and he is awfully boring. I would take another teacher if given the choice. Oh, and he is DEFINETELY NOT HOT! Not sure why he has a chili pepper!
Knows what he is talking about. Very interesting. Also very flexible willl lest you take quizes you missed ect. As long as you go to class you'll be fine.
He is very interesting to listen to. The lectures definitely are not boring,On tests and papers he's not clear about what he's looking for. Showing up to his classes are definitely necessary since he doesn't give out any notes on his lectures, he lectures on very vague literature that we're supposed to read but can't understand without him.
Class and lecture kept my attention and he's got a pretty good sense of humor. Read the text, come to class and take notes - it's that simple. Somewhat difficult to figure out what he's looking for in an essay but will clarify if you ask him.
I have had Battani for four classes here at GV and every time he's been awesome! He has a very dry wit that many students just don't get, but that's what makes class great with him. You will have to learn how to go horizontal with your notes though, but that's an easy switch.
Prof. Battani is awesome. This class was great. A combination of film, text and articles made it very interesting. Take notes and you'll "ACE" the class.
He is a great professor. I was so scared of him and thought I was going to fail but I got an A! You need to come to class, take lecture notes (study those for all quizes/tests). Make sure to do reading in both books because later on he will draw questions from the final from stories in the book. TAKE HIM IF POSSIBLE!! helps on papers too!
Be careful taking this guy if you're not a sociology student. I'm a writing student and got C's on every quiz and a D on the final. The only thing that saved me was the term paper. He's got a good sense of humor and knows his stuff, so don't try to B.S. him. Do hard work and he'll recognize it.
He was unhelpful and expected too much. When he said that for the past few years his first test average is a D he wasn't kidding and to me that says that he's either not teaching or he's expecting too much. Very heavy on SOC for a theme class LOTS of reading. Don't take if you don't have a lot of time and SOC knowledge
Do not take SOC 346. It says SOC 101 is not a pre-req, but it is with the way he grades. I spent WAY too much time reading texts and doing assignments only to get slapped in the face with ANOTHER C. He won't take HW not turned in in class. He expects you to know these soc terms, but he doesn't EVER define them for you and EXPECTS you to use them.
Do not purchase the textbooks. Be prepared for video lectures and lots of group work. Very bland video lectures. Essay Exams. Hard Quizzes. If you don't have a masters in sociology, don't take him. He expects you to be a sociological genius, but never gives you the skills to succeed. Very vague grading outlines.
This was an online that I took to get some more credits. I probably would not take one of his classes again. There are 2 books you must get for the course. A reading articles book and a chapter review book. You must read each section for each week and then take 2 quizzes, one for each book. The quizzes are pretty hard. Would not recommend Battani.
Battani was one of the worst professors I've had. He is such a hard grader for a level 200 class. Would not recommend if you want to read over 70+ pages a week.
I am normally an A student. I swear this professor does not give A's! So frustrated with how tough he grades discussion boards. I loved the course material, but I really cannot stand how tough of a grader this guy is.
I don't recommend it for an online class unless you don't care about reading 60-80 pages a week and doing a discussion almost every week. The discussions you had to post early and comment often throughout the week which I found difficult to do because I was so busy with other stuff. Good professor though, wish I would've taken his class in person.
For a 101 online class, this is an asinine amount of work. Having to do all the work with other classes, work, and family commitments is a big problem. Then when you get a grade back on an assignment, you realize (according to him) you only get a C- because of arbitrary reasons.
This is a ridiculous amount of work for a 101 online class. You are expected to read multiple chapters a week (plus extra readings) as well as quizzes for each chapter, discussions, and assignments. He also has a really strange grading system, and you have to participate a LOT throughout the week and proofread everything to get a good grade.
Cannot recommend, very unclear expectations with everything, but especially with papers. I am an English major who is pretty solid with paper writing (consistent A's, lots of perfect papers) and I received low B's on both his papers.
Surprised to read some of these bad reviews. I took his online class, and enjoyed it. The two journal reviews take time, but I thought he graded fair. Two quizzes a week, but they are not difficult if you have your book beside you. He likes a lot of detail in the discussions, but the topics were all interesting. Didn't think it was too much work.
Professor Battani is an amazing professor! I took Soc 101 online with him. The class structure is so organized and great, and his lectures he posts on line (they are short videos, not to worry!) are very helpful. There is a decent amount of reading, but if you stay on track, you will do great! The textbooks were honestly super interesting, too.
Battani is a great professor for students who are actually interested in Sociology. He provided a "flipped classroom" setting for our specific class that worked really well. He's funny as hell and is insanely laid back in class. But, there is a lot of reading and outside work of class.
I took Battani for sociology 101 online. He posts lectures to make sure you actually understand what you will be reading in the texts which were helpful. Get ready to read because the chapter readings and others were fairly long. If you do the readings, and the quizzes that go along with them then you will do fine! great online course
This is a great filler class to have when you have a busy schedule. Everything was due on Sunday night. Battani is very kind and caring. Lots of writing for discussions and essays but it was manageable. Also a lot of online tests which were easy and had no time limit. some of the questions were tricky though so its nice he gives 2 attempts
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! His grading is extremely unclear and it is impossible to get an "A" on the papers and discussions boards. He will pick apart every little detail and give you a "B" at best its very annoying. I am an "A" student and this class is killing me. I was told I only have a basic understanding... it is a 100 level intro course
Professor Battani is a great lecturer. They are detailed and clear. He wasn't my favorite teacher but I'd take one of his classes again if I had to. His quizzes are easy, but he grades pretty toughly on his 3 essay assignments. Just a tip: I found the sociology textbook for Intro to Sociology as a PDF online; don't buy it.
A tough grader on heavily weighted discussions and papers! Quizzes every week and three papers total. Organized and on time with posting assignments. Lectures were very short however he spoke fast! The book is required and there is a ton of reading from that plus extra articles. Quick in responding to emails.
Marshall Battani is one of the worst Sociology Professors at GV. He is not accessible outside of class. Grades heavily on the papers and always gives you 5% less than you actually should be getting. Don't take this Professor!
He's a great professor, lectures are very detailed and help summarize the main ideas from each chapter. I would say I learned a lot from lectures & discussions. There was a quiz for each chapter 20 questions, 3 essays (one being the final), and a few discussions. Overall 10/10 I thought for an online course and I would definitely take again! :)
Nice guy, strict prof. Grades really harshly. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into lectures, which is appreciated. However, discussion post and essay prompts were very vague and he always graded really tough on them. Confusing feedback on them. Much more difficult for a 101 class than I anticipated. Weekly quizzes had question not from book.
Guy grades like we are in graduate school when he is teaching intro to soc. Absolutely ridiculous, worst class I have taken and I am in my senior year with a 3.9 GPA.
By far the worst professor I've ever had - horribly confusing assignments, and even more confusing explanations when asked for clarification. Also, I'm not sure if he even knows it's a 100 level class because he grades every assignment harder than my 400 level class professors. If you care about your GPA and mental health, DO NOT take this prof.
I really loved this class. It made me really think and expand my beliefs on society. He does make participation worth your grade which was daunting at first, but once everyone is comfortable we had some really great discussions. His lectures were very interesting to me. The exams are all the quizzes you take so you know the questions and answers.
For Social Theory, I thought Battani was incredible! He gave pretty stimulating lectures on Tuesdays, and we did group work on Thursdays. I enjoyed the struture of the class. He gives a LOT of extra credit opportunities. There are weekly quizzes that you get unlimited attempts on. One midterm and final, straight from the quiz questions.
He is a great professor and I loved how this class was set up. Lecture on Tuesdays and labs on Thursdays. The lectures are interesting and they connect to the labs. Quizzes are easy with unlimited attempts. I would for sure take him again.
Professor Battani is very kind and knowledgable. You can tell he cares about his lectures and keeping his students happy. Labs were done once a week on Thursdays with an assigned group, and made you really think. Even though they were challenging, he gave good feedback and also extra credit opportunities that made the class so much less stressful.
Overall, he's great. Of course, everyone could improve. Lecture days not required, lab days are but you have 2 freebees. The labs are very stimulating and great group work. Exams are based off quiz questions. Almost every week there's extra credit. Easy A.
Really great professor! As long as you do the work, you really cant go wrong. For SOC 204, we had lectures one day and then "lab" the other in which we got with groups and applied the material learned. I really liked this structure, it made it easy to ensure understanding of the material! Highly recommend this professor!!
Professor Battani is a great professor. Tries to make class fun and engaging for students. The reading can be difficult to understand but Professor Battani does a really good job of making concepts clear and easy to understand in lectures. You have to show up to get points for lab work. Quizzes each week + a final and a midterm. Great class.
TONS of chances for extra credit in this class. Also tons of reading but quizzes and exams are all on the reading and are pretty straightforward. His expectations are clear from the beginning of the class. He is quite funny and makes class enjoyable. Sometimes concepts can get boring or quite mundane but his personality makes class fun.
There are weekly reading quizzes and extra credit opportunities that help further your understanding of the material from the text book. Some times the text is hard to understand but his explanation of it in class really helps
We had in-class lectures on Tuesdays and group work ("labs") every Thursday. There is extra credit offered every week based on the material you will cover that week but it's due Monday nights. It's annoying but it is pretty easy, exam questions are taken directly from weekly quizzes. Overall a nice guy, makes the content in the class manageable.
Very detailed and thorough lectures, but he is a VERY tough grader on discussion boards and papers. Easy quizzes weekly, frequent discussion boards, and a few essays throughout the semester.
He makes the lectures fun and not too dry (which is impressive considering some of the topics). Exam questions are MC and the questions are taken word for word from the weekly quizzes. The weekly quizzes are between 10-15 questions and there's unlimited attempts until the deadline. Also, the whole semester is pre-laid out on blackboard.
I loved this class! Super easy and theres just an online quiz every friday. There is a lab each week that he grades a little tough but as long as your thorough you will be fine.
took course online. overall pretty easy, super picky grader though. when messaged he replies quick but can be passive aggressive. you'll pass the class, he is just an extreme grader.
The only things you are graded on are a weekly online quiz, weekly group lab, and 2 exams. The quizzes are super easy but he can grade tougher on the labs. He offers weekly extra credit and bases the exams word for word off the quizzes making it really easy to pass with an A. Overall I recommend him for an easy A class.
Super nice guy and passionate about what he teaches. Can be a harsh grader but still gives good feedback. Go to lectures, take notes, read the book, and engage when you do group work weekly and your grade will be totally fine. Pretty easy class to take overall.
Professor Battani makes this class engaging and easy to pass. Quizzes and exams are straightforward, with plenty of extra credit opportunities. The weekly labs can be graded tough, but overall it's a manageable course. unstuck study was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Horrible professor, passive aggressive and not helpful. For an intro class he grades like graduate school. I have taken lots of sociology classes and this is by far the worst class I have taken at GVSU. Impossible to get a decent grade on papers/ discussion boards. Expects you to be on expert on every topic and article in the course.
I wouldn't suggest taking this class, he is a tough grader with all papers and discussion boards. Quizzes are easy but not worth much. Very disrespectful.
He's a tough grader, but very understanding. I requested an extension on a lot of reading assignments and he was very lenient. Overall, just wants everyone to understand the content because theory is complex and can be difficult.
Participation & attendance matters!! I took him twice & he's an amazing professor. intro Social theory is an interesting &easy class if you do the work (only exam i got a 100 on, literally ever) Contemp social theory is A LOT harder. The exams are very complex (but he allows you to use notes) lots of reading and hw. homework can work against u!!
The amount of work for this class was comparable to an SWS (about 7000-8000 words written) and he was a hard grader. After found out exactly what he was looking for, the class became a lot easier. I did spend A LOT of time on this class due to the amount we had to write when there were essays or discussions that were due at the end of the week.
