A class from Hell!
An awful professor - the exams were difficult and the lectures were useless.
I can categorically say, without thinking twice, that this man has been the *worst* professor I have ever had and I am confident that he will retain that spot in future also. Exams are from hell, no partial credit, *doesnt teach a thing in class*, very unfair in grading. How did he get tenure???
I was fortunate enough to get out of this class in the first week and go to Eriksson's instead. From the little that I saw, worst prof ever. Honestly, even if you want to take the course, it's worth delaying it just to avoid this man. STAY AWAY.

Sometimes rambled and didnt efficiently hold deadlines and due dates.
Took a class with this professor a semester ago. It was the first time he ever taught "seeking truth, living with doubt" Saw him last week and asked him how he was doing. After jumping back 3 feet he responded "well I'm teaching this class called seeking truth..." obviously had no idea who I was.
Do not take his classes. Best advice you will get during all of your undergraduate experience. Not personable, crying mandatory, confusing grader. Do not take
He basically talks about what ever is on his mind rather than what is on the test.
He singles out students...if you don't like that then don't go to lecture, it really isn't that helpful anyway. Tests are pleasantly easy. Does tend to go on tangents...
Worst prof I have ever had and i'm sure will have. No partial-credit, unfair grader. Purposely gives false answers to "mock practice exams" always goes off topic like the Civil War for example...for 25 min. I cannot understand how he is still around. do NOT take if at all possible.
Easily the worst Professor I have ever had. Exams were not fair at all (even included material from chapters not yet covered). I would drop the class before you take it with him. Better yet put off graduating before you put yourself his class.
The worst prof I have every had. Comes to lecture and goes over random examples. the TA's have no idea what is going on either, so they just do examples out of the book. The tests are nothing like what he teaches or what is in the book. By far, the worst prof I have every had. Final test average was a 23%
Exams: hard. Homework: hard. Grade: so ugly you wouldn't even want to look at it.
He is a terrible lecturer who only teaches by examples, and mind you they are examples my 12 year old sister could understand and were not difficult enough for the class. Tricky and near impossible tests and hates Engineers too. Avoid if you can.
Terrible
this guy is useless. you'll need to teach yourself out of the book. if you cant do that effectively, avoid this prof. if you have to take his class, pray your TA is helpful.
The worst professor I've ever had. Homework assignments were too difficult and useless. Exams were also very difficult. Don't take this professor without a lot of physics before this class or you probably won't pass.
Worst professor ever. He speaks in a monotone voice, calls people out to answer outrageous questions, thinks he's funny but he's not, has no system for determining grades, and takes weeks to follow through with anything he says he'll do. Avoid at all costs.
I Love Physics. I hate Onellion. I thought this class was easy, but thats because AP Physics B was very similar. Lecture is useless and he doesn't even show up for office hours.
Awful professor, as far as teaching is concerned. Exams don't cover material he has taught and are extremely hard. Writes too small. Surprisingly approachable and nice, but I would never take a class with him again.
AVOID!!! The exam questions are impossible to answer!
The most ridiculous test I have ever took, I don't think even TA or grad students can finish it in time. Lectures are terrible, nothing about physics. Won't take his class any more
HORRIBLE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Really bad lecturer, utterly boring and monotonous all the time. Most of his lectures aren't even physics, he rambles on forever about philosophy and what not. Lectures are thus completely useless, tests are ridiculously hard, does NOT do any problems/examples for exams, goes on forever doing useless proofs that we don't need to know for the exams.
WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD PERIOD...... UNFAIR EXAMS THAT THE GRADUATE LEVEL TA'S COULDN'T EVEN DO.... CONCEITED AND ARROGANT....IM PUTTING OFF GRADUATION SO I DONT HAVE TO TAKE PHYSICS 202 WITH HIM NEXT SEMESTER
He is the worst I have ever had, and I'm sure he'll stay in the spot forever.
Horrible. Exams are unfair. Doesn't even talk about relevant material for most of class. If you question his grading, you can lose points.
Sucks major ass. SO to my buddy who sent him a nasty email that absolutely tore him apart...and forgot that his name appears for the contact email
Prof Onellian is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is domineering, hostile, and ridicules students, other scientists and ethnic groups alike. He routinely puts students on the spot in class with irrelevant questios and ridicules them for incorrect responses. His lectures have no flow and he does not teach what is on his exams. Avoid.
I enjoyed him as a teacher, he really showed how physics can be applied in real life by giving many examples and being quite funny. However his teaching ability can be brought into question, without prior instruction in physics I would have been lost. Exams are also quite hard and partial credit is barely given. Overall average.

Between unable to teach, disrespecting students, and not caring about the class, I would have to say this is the worst case scenario. Avoid at all costs.
He is the worst professor I have ever experienced. I came into the class knowing nothing about physics and I am leaving the class knowing nothing about physics. The exam questions were nothing like lecture, the book or homework and he gave little to no partial credit. He is insufferable. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
All I can tell you is to avoid Marshall if at all humanly possible. Please, do not make the mistake I did. Unless you already have a degree in physics, you will be lost and frustrated. He doesn't teach you anything, and then expects you to know in-depth concepts for the exams. Just...don't.
Avoid at all costs. Is absolutely terrible.
Worst professor. Made physics 201, basic mechanics, seem impossible. Hard tests, impossible homeworks
Amazing professor, used real world examples and made the class pretty easy if you pay attention.
Pretty bad
His writing is barely legible, so sit in the front. Go to the discussion section if you plan on having any idea on how to do the homework. Has a tendency to answer students' questions with unrelated things. Exam grading was a little unfair, I thought. Not a terrible class.
Nice guy, will put in the time to help if you ask. The class was easy for me but difficult material. I think he does a good job.
He is not a very good professor. While I thought the class was easy, he managed to avoid teaching anything relevant to the questions he wrote on the exams and the problems he assigned in the homework. If you have an understanding of physics then the class is not too difficult but you will have to teach yourself everything.
Horrible professor, explains things as if you have a strong background in relativity and Schrödinger's equation. Luckily, he practically tells you what's on his exams, but still throws curveballs. Can read a book for 10% E.C. If you want to learn something, don't take this class. Thank god my engineering courses retaught what he failed at.
WORST PROF. lectures are useless. did problems wrong on board and how solutions were even wrong. talks about history more than physics and didn't give us useful information for test. Only passed from having a great TA. He was rude and laughed at people for saying wrong answer after having called them out. AVOID.
AVOID HIM! Arrogant and hostile professor. You have to avoid him utterly. The worst professor i ever seen. He has no humble attitude treating his students. Again! Avoid him!
He was one of the worst professors I've ever had. He ignored multiple emails early on. The first week's assignment was to write a 7 page report on applying the theory of relativity to an electron in a cathode ray tube. This was assigned with no real instruction. He returns the paper with a number on it with zero explanation of how he derived that #
Terrible. Do not take. You have been warned. He purposefully looks for the most convoluted way to present the material. He gives weekly quizzes on topics you have not yet learned about. You will fail these. His homework is purely from the book and the lectures will not prepare you for them. His exams are so random you cannot prepare.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS if you want to establish a deep physics background. His teaching is UTTERLY TERRIBLE and is impossible to understand even if you masters AP physics C.
Professor Onellion is one of the kindest and most accommodating professors I have ever had. If you pay attention to his lectures, and genuinely show interest in the class (because the topics are actually super interesting), you will do great! He is very understanding if you have other things going on in life.. Just communicate!
Prof. Onellion is the best physics professor I've ever had. His lectures are interesting and he presents the material memorable wars. In discussion he goes over the homework thats due the next week and sets up each problem for you. He also guarantees that you'll get a BC if you show up to every class and do all the home work
He doesn't prepare you for exams at all, and his exams are much harder than the homework given. He use to give us spot problems that were somewhat similar to the exams, but then he got lazy after the 9th one and started using textbook examples again. Last midterm he gave us an exam where 50% and up was an A.
Tests were much harder than homework or anything given during class. He use to give example problems but got lazy and stopped midway through term. Tries to make tests super hard beyond your level of understanding, and grades accordingly so that everyone does bad. 45% was an A last midterm.
RUN! This class was awful! The prof seems like a nice guy, but I don't think I really learned anything and it made me hate physics. I got a BC, but that is only because I showed up to every class period and turned in every assignment (even if they weren't good). The discussions for the class are pretty much another lecture time.
Took physics knowing that I am not great at math but I was ready to work for a good grade. Made it very hard to do sso. He would talk about the most random things that did not pertain to the class and I really feel like the only way i passed was because of my Ta and Khan academy. Terrible. Disappointed in UW
Takes time to answer questions well, both with what actually pertains to the course material as well as mentioning what really happens even if outside of course expectations. Treats his students with respect. Sometimes goes off topic but usually to talk about physics history, always interesting. Learned a lot within my field and others. Can be hard
Lectures can be very confusing, gives you quizzes on material that will be talked about in the upcoming week, and a very tough grader for homework and writing assignments. He didn't hand back any materials after the sixth week of class and doesn't post grades online, so you don't know how you're doing in the class until you get your final grade.
Nelly is a really nice guy who really cares about his students, but he teaches the class in an unorganized way that leaves you confused after each lecture. You realize that you don't know very much valuable information when you finish the class. Try to fight back for points on exams, though, as he is rather nice about grading mistakes.
My biggest problem with Dr. Onellion was that he handed back only two assignments all semester. His lectures were disorganized, he quizzes you on his handwritten lecture notes, and there are always mistakes in his answer keys. Interesting class, bad prof.
This is the first and only response I will ever leave about a professor. This guy is the worst. Period. Lectures, homework, and exams have little to no crossover material. Doesn't answer questions well, goes off on tangents, uses equations for exams he's never used. Shows you derivations of Schrodinger's equation&expects you to understand material.
The only specific good thing about Dr. O'Nellion is he can be entertaining and funny. He's a smart man, but forgot what it's like not to understand something. He's not very patient. The homeworks rarely ever match up with what we're talking about in the lectures. The homeworks are math based but we do absolutely no math in lecture. Interesting tho.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. His lectures teach you nothing and he will randomly call on you and make fun if you answer incorrectly. Hands down the worst professor I have had at UW. If you have to take modern physics and he is the only option, prepare to get a BC.
He's lectures may looks horrible at a first glance, but he actually explains the concept. Surely he's not so organized and often make mistakes in details, but he does tell you the general information you need. 241 is a survey course and you shouldn't expect too much more. Grade curve isn't good, but he will not intentionally disgust you.
I don't get why everyone is hating on Onellion? His lectures can get dry but he always ties the physics concepts into applicable material, and he gives good history on the topics. He seems very cold and unapproachable, but if you ask for help he gives much better explanations one on one. Hard course, but so much more interesting than 207 & 208.
Professor Onellion gives interesting lectures, but he is very disorganized. The homework rarely aligns with what is talked about in class. He went the whole semester and handed back less than 10 of the 30 graded assignments. He never posted anything on canvas, so I have no idea what my grade is. Mid term avg 35, no curve. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is the worst professor I've had yet at UW Madison. Lectures are useless and extremely boring. He is very lazy you will never receive an assignment back. He gives out maybe 1 or 2 A's a semester if that. Avoid at all costs.
This is the worst Professor I have ever encountered at UW-Madison. His lectures are disorganized and all over the place. He is very lazy and never gives you ANY feedback on his assignments and mid-term exam. He seems like a decent person, but a TERRIBLE professor. We were very lucky to have a great TA who did her absolute best to help us.
He does not know how to teach, and he is unwilling to help students to succeed in this course
This mans talks through mental math and expects you to be able to visualize all the stuff he is doing. DO not take him for an online class he is extremely bad at lecturing and you will be forced to learn only from the textbook.
Marshall Onellion is incapable of putting himself in his students' shoes. When students ask questions he gives responses like "if you cannot figure this out, that's a serious problem". Avoid taking Prof. Onellion's class at all costs!
Mr. Onion is a horribly bland and unenthusiastic online instructor
Horribly unenthusiastic and rude professor. Unwilling to help students with questions and is in general rude and condescending towards them, which is unacceptable especially given how hard his lectures are to follow. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Marshall is insulting students as I type this review. He absolutely refuses to work through problems in class, and when asked a question he doesn't want to answer, he answers with, "you must be joking."
The lecture I just had with this professor was the worst lecture I have had in my college experience. Marshall insulted students asking fundamental questions to the content discussed, asking if they were "joking". This completely ruining my hope for these lectures. Simple concepts fail to be conveyed in his monotone, verbatim slide lectures.
Disrespected students who would try to ask questions to better understand what he was talking about. He fails to understand that these are new concepts to us, and by not writing out his process to help us follow along, he confuses you to the point of asking questions, to which he will then insult you for not being able to do it all in your head.
The worst lectures I have ever experienced. Prof. Onellion does not write while teaching, so it is very difficult to follow what he is saying, and he blames students for not being able to visualize calculus while learning a brand new topic.
Very disrespectful to students.
Professor Onellion is the most rude professor I have encountered. As you have seen with other reviews, he is extremely hostile toward students who are trying to give constructive feedback. People are asking him to write the answers down on the slides so they can visualize brand new concepts better, but he berates them instead. Avoid at all costs.
Terrible, this dude is the rudest professor I have ever had. He berates and insults people when they ask questions. He talks us through mental math problems without showing work. He refuses to listen to student feedback that would help us learn more effectively. Avoid this dude.
The professor was not accommodating to online learning and scolded students when trying to ask him to be more clear and write math out. Lectures are very bland and hard to follow. I am very frustrated in this class, especially by the lack of learning from the professor.
Some of the most boring and tiring lectures I've ever had the displeasure to sit through. Extremely rude to students. Asking questions gets you mocked in front of the entire class, literally said "You must be joking." once. Turned off ability to ask questions after a couple lectures so it's even harder to understand things. Avoid like the plague.
Intentionally made the midterm significantly harder than previous semesters for what I assume was to combat cheating during Covid. Hardest test I've ever taken. Also the most cheat-friendly. Asynch, correct answers confirmed if taken right away, non-randomized, multiple choice in same order every time. I did not but others did. Terrible instructor.
Professor decided a few weeks in to disable all comments during lectures, because we were asking too many questions. Today, his video went out for about five minutes during lecture, and no one could tell him. He also tries to flex on his students by talking about how he went to a "small university you may have heard of called Rice".
Has been rude to students who ask questions in class on multiple occasions, lectures are dry, poor transition to online learning
This man will make you hate physics more than you already do. Avoid him like your life depends on it.
In all seriousness, he does not seem to care about his students. Lectures were taught online and he disabled students ability to ask questions about material as he presented it in lecture. His exams were "more difficult than anything offered in past physics 202 classes" according the the TA's. If you get his class, drop and take it another semester
terrible professor and he is mean. take it with pan 100%
Never have I ever had a more disrespectful professor. For example: someone asked a (very reasonable) question and he responded with, and I quote, "you must be joking," before answering it in a sarcastic manner. A few lectures after, he disabled the chat and mic functions for students so we couldn't ask questions. Such a hostile man, and for what?
This professor is so bad that after seeing that he was the only prof for the next course required for my physics major, I dropped the major. He was the least professional and rudest teacher or person I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. Unwilling to help students in any capacity, and exams that seemingly aim to make students fail. Avoid.
