she tended to grade you on whether she liked you or not
Very hard class, especially in summer. Tests every other day. Final cummulative, and she likes essay questions. She's hard but good.
Probably the smartest and most knowledgeable teacher I've ever encounterd, but she's very demanding. It's good preparation for if you transfer to a UC. BIO 3 & 4 are very difficult but you will learn a lot.
Intersting stuff! But hard as hell! Unless you know what she knows dont take it! It will kill your G.P.A.
An extremely intelligent professor. Professional and helpful if you are trying. Power point presentation is clear, lecture is organized. If you dont read the text, you won't pass! Harder than most but kind.
this is not a hard class f*c* up class. Emotional scarring may fade away, but that big fat F on your transcript won't.
De Jesus is a horrible teacher. She tests you on things not in lecture nor in book. She bragged to the class that nearly 50% of students would fail. Everyone I know is failing lecture, your only hope in this class is your lab grade to pull you up. She needs to be fired. Horrible teacher!
take her at your own risk!!!!!!!!!!
If you want the A, you will have to work you ass off. if you want a C, you will still need to work your ass off! good teacher but expects University level work from students.
This class was very hard. She tests you on things not found in the book. De Jesus does not want people to pass. If you can't pick your grade up in the begining, your best choice to not ruin your GPA is to drop it.
Rigorous course. Intimidating but very knowledgeable. Shes very passionate about the subject. 1 quiz/week, 3 papers, 3 test, 1 final. Even if you get a c, you know youve worked your ass off.
awful class----awful "lady" OH, she's been known to rate herself, so watch out for any ratings that don't seem to be in keeping with the rest. I hated this class because of her and even though I got an A, I would only suggest this class to those people I don't like.
Very knowledgeable teacher, tuff class but it's to be expected since this class is useful to the profession that it is aimed towards. She teaches at the UC level. This class is used and should be used to weed out the ones that can't hack it in the field (Nursing). Good luck.
You can reap a lot of knowledge from her class, but its very difficult. My biggest grippe about her is that she has no energy to her, she rarely smiles, does not seem interactive at all. Maybe if she told an occasional joke, or just did not have the attitude of a limp towel, then I would of enjoyed the experience.
Questions on quizes were very misleading at times. She did have a sense of humor with my lab class, Spring 2005, but she can be very hard to follow at times. Also, if you don't ask direct questions you won't get the answer you are looking for.
one of the hardest classes ive ever taken.. passed with a C n worked my ASS off -not worth it... couldnt stand her.. do not take her if possible!!!!

Hope you're feeling lucky! Memorize the entire book including page numbers, captions, typo's, and colors of diagrams.. oh yeah... remember the time and date she sneezed and or coughed in class cuz that's what the extra credit questions will be on. Super
She is terrible, she is on a mission to make Biology the most difficult course on campus. She resents Chemistry and Physics, because they are considered more difficult subjects. My advice, don't take any courses with her, instead take them at Oxnard College or anywhere else.
Worst teacher I've ever had. By far totally unhelpful, goes way to fast, doesn't go over material she tests on, everything in book is testable, which is up to you to read. Tests from h ell, the class test average "D", she likes making bio harder than it is, DON'T TAKE, save yourself from the bad grade! Horrible teacher, should be fired.
God she is out to flunk a whole class. She expects the book to teach you the subject. DON'T take her unless you love F's or want to work like crazy for a C. Her tests are outrageously difficult. Avoid her like the plague!!!
I hate microbiology
I tihnk she enjoys making people cry. I went to class every day read the book took notes filled in the study guide, I even cheated on a test and couldnt get better than a 60% in her class..... On the flip slide, in her class 60% is a C
very hard teacher, but if you go to her office hours, you find out she is very helpful, you can have a good conversation w/ her about any subject. I liked her!!
Worst teacher on the face of the planet, she will 1.try to fail u, 2.eats cheese while she lectures 3.vague in lecture then gives insanely hard tests 4.lectures in monotone, has no personality, gives vague answers 2 questions 2 purposely throw u from the answer, tests ?'s must be read 5x's , hate her! looks like evil mr.koolaid w/ glasses
This is a very diffucult class, but mostly because of the large amount of subject matter to cover in such a short amount of time, not the teacher. She is very informative, but if you don't keep up on the reading you will not be able to pass the tests as all info is not elaborately discussed in lectures. *HINT* Chapter practice tests very helpful!
Dr. D is an amazing woman. she's incredibly intelligent and will hold a conversation with you for hours. her office hours are VERY helpful as well as the study questions. her tests are HARD, but i realized when i tranfered that she was the only prof. who really prepared me for the UC.

really helpful, and knows her stuff-dang. read the ch's 1st time->understand, 2nd time->memorize, take notes in lecture. honestly, if you don't like the subj. you're not gonna like the class. (any class) study diligently and intelligently and you shall be rewarded. (read unit "specials" for extra credit on tests.) have a great day =D
sure she knows the material. there is no doubting that. problem is she doesnt know how to teach it. the class is full of stupid useless assignments. busy work really. her tests are so long that it stops being coming about knowing the material. it just becomes an endurance run. evolution isn't taught till the end which is really just stupid.
I've already commented, but just to let you know. If you were to rank her with the other professors at UCLA, she's on the easy side. If you can't hack it in her class even with a lot of hard work, enough said. Don't take this class if it's not a prereq. It will probably kill your GPA if you're not really serious about it.
This is not an easy class, but if you work hard youll get a passing grade. De Jesus is very understanding and is always willing to help. Very considerate woman.
Extremely hard, extremely boring. Don't bother remembering anything remotely interesting about biology, those won't be on the test. Remember all of the things that are unimportant and you will get an A.
Insanely hard teacher. Everything she says, lectures, covers over it ALL WILL be on the test. The tiniest detail you may think is insignificant may be on the test. Read the chapters before the lecture. For quizzes, always know the phylum. You try really hard you'll make it. Barely maybe, but you will pass.
I'd rather have an insanely hard teacher who knows her stuff over a nice guy who's clueless. My only advice is to read EVERYTHING in the text, because the smallest detail will be on the test. Read the tables, because they'll be a huge part of your grade. This class is a GPA killer.
She looks to fail you if she can. She's way harder than you think mainly because she will ask questions with double negatives, words tests to confuse, and does not give straight answers. She was a TA at UCLA not a teacher, get it straight! She eats and chews cheese w/ her mouth open while talking into her microphone, eww! Avoid her if you can!
Sick seriously sick, I can't stand that chewing and heavy breathing into the microphone! Yes she is a hard teacher with ridiculously hard tests, but thats not what gets me, its the nasty chewing and breathing into her mouth piece that just drives me nuts! She should seriously eat out side of class, so GROSS!
she was the worst teacher ever. she was so difficult to understand, i had no idea what was going on. luckily my lab partner did and i was able to copy to get a c in the course. the last day of class she was nice to me, but other than that she was terrible. seems she enjoys being in control of people's grades..maybe has insecurity issues..
she is terrible, and makes the whole bio department at VC look horrible. She eats cheese in class and chews into her microphone. Her tests are ridiculously hard, because she asks questions about things she never covered in class and that are not in your text book. Horrible horrible teacher, worse teacher at VC, avoid her like the plague.
all i can say is that she is really bad. I think she is the worse teacher at VC. She must be angry at the world and therefore takes it out on the students.
previous posts are right on, she is just not cut out to teach.
Hardest class at VC, yet I survived. To pass the exams, think like she does and study every last detail in the book. Labs are the only way to keep your grade up. Other than that, she was VERY helpful in matters regarding four-year schools, and she got our feet wet with the research project. If you want to actually learn bio, take her.
One of the few professors at the CC level that not only teaches at the university level but expects you to preform as if at university. A MUST if you are planning to transfer - get used to it now. Very kind hearted once you get past the exterior. Must attend lectures and READ text; review questions at end of chapters as well as boxed stories within
I just have to say that this teacher although nice sometimes gives the hardest tests and no matter how hard you study, it will be useless. she needs to also stop munching while lecturing in microphone!gross!shes smart but a REALLY BAD Teacher....shes a gpa killer...so true!
SHE IS A GREAT TEACHER. You learn sooooo much from her class. She teaches at a university level. Her test are super hard, but it makes you learn the material, and even though you fail the first test you can bring up your grade by the end of the semester. Really recommend her classes!!!!!
I find that I do learn a lot in the class, however, I've also found that what she lectures on and what I read in the textbook is not what she tests on. I'm typically a good student and got a 4.6 GPA my senior year of high school, but I'm struggling to maintain a B in her class. In short, find another professor for this class.
I've already graduated from a university, and her teaching style is nothing like major universities. she lectures on one thing and teaches on minute details. she doesn't want her students to get A's. she's rude and condescending. she makes you put together an art board. nothing about an art board says "university level".
her teaching is rediculus. i have always been a straight a student and being in her class made me feel like i was stupid. what she teaches in class and what is in the book is not at all what her tests are about they are horrible i dont think anyone in my class passed with anything higher then a c. do NOTTT taker her go to oxnard.
Very demanding class. Lectures based not only on the book. Read chapters before lecture! Skipping the reading is a sure Fail in this class. Grade is based on Labs, attendance, research report, 3 Midtrms, and Final (comm.). warning: She teaches at a university level!!! she is not lenient on grading.Take this class if you really want to learn bio.
Amazing. Everything on her tests is in the book. Study everything and you'll pass her class with an A. She game me a B because my labs were not as perfect as she would like. Easy class, you just need to study. Anybody who thinks differently does not try. One exam had us write a three page essay on the model for DNA replication and 75 question.
She can NOT TEACH FOR HER LIFE! She offered absolutely no help for exams and did not make an effort to review material or make study guides. Her lectures are LAZILY put together and are very unclear and unhelpful. Do not take her for any class. She is so boring and really bad at teaching biology.
I took this class in the summer, a 6 week course, need less to say VERY demanding. My experience was great, I think she is a great professor & will definitely recommend her! I am an average student and I managed to get a B in this class. Any negative comments about this professor is ridiculous, she is a good teacher.
HORRIBLE! WORST TEACHER EVER!she pretends you are at an ivy league school and expects you to have only her class I had to drop two classes just to study for her class and still ended with a bad grade.. go to moorpark or oxnard instead of taking this teacher!
I took Ms. De Jesus for Micro this past summer. She is amazing, extremely knowledgeable and interesting, with a sense of humor! This is a difficult subject to begin with. Attendance is mandatory and so is reading and studying. This class is not for crybabies! I miss her lectures. I would take her again.
De jesus is a great teacher. She is difficult but why shouldn't we be prepared for university level bio courses.I worked hard and got B, but I was happy with his. Read the book!!!reread is neccesary!!I would take another class from her. I learned so much in this class, such a good foundation.
she is a very challenging teacher, because she wants you to be prepared to transfer. if you are looking for an easy bio class, this is not it. her tests are very hard and she also gives no study guides, so you must review your notes, record letcure, form study groups, read the book. very time consuming but it is possible to pass her class.
I joined Dr De Jesus bio class in august 2001, as a predental student. I was impressed by the volume of her knowledge and the way she structured all these information into an easy task for all of her students, incuding me. Well, she is GREAT both as human and teacher. She helps a lot! have to study hard in her class but she is amazing! Thank you!
Dr. de Jesus is a very knowledgable instructor who is up to date with current findings and research in the field. She definetly enriches Ventura's great quality of a school. Study her notes and powerpoints and only use the book for more clarity on her lecture.it depends on how good your study stratedgy is just like any other class.
Took environmental & organismal biology. It was very difficult, but i loved the class. She is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and & is always willing to help & talk. There IS a lot of memorization, but that's just the course. She really helped me during a difficult time personally, letting me turn in late work & made sure that i passed.
Let me start off by saying I got an A in her summer Mirco class. However, she is one of the worst professors I have had in college (I go to UCLA). Her knowledge of the subject does not go past the textbook, she ignores students' hands held up for questions, and her tests contain words/questions that were not covered in either lecture or the text.
This class is super time consuming because of the reading and studying that you need to do in order to comprehend everything but Dr. De Jesus is a wonderful teacher! She is super sweet and anytime you need help as long as you ask she figures out any way to be able to help you! even with transferring to a college! super knowledgeable! overall great
Let me start off by saying this was the most difficult class I had. Lab was simple, lectures were about something I suppose. Everything that is on her tests is in the book. No study guide or review of material so expect to stay up long hours memorizing facts from the book. Teaches at a university level of understanding so be prepared.
Prepare for impossible tests and hours of typed out homework. The average test grade every time is an F; this is because she provides no study guide or anything, and hardly any of the questions seem to come from lecture. You have to basically memorize the textbook to do well on her tests. Then, for lab, she requires that you retype the lab manual.
Her class is extremely demanding. She is oftentimes unreasonably demanding for that matter. Plan on taking this class and only this class if you want to do well.
This was absolutely the most difficult class I've ever taken, and I took it in a 6-week summer course. Prepare to do nothing but study. She knows her stuff, but the tests (daily) are realllly hard. Started out averaging with a D, and ended up with an A! Hang in there, and study, study, study! (Ps Lab with Bellenson was horrible).
This is not a basic English class. It is a difficult class. De Jesus taught the class well and her tests were fair. If you study, you will do fine. Bottom line. I got an A.
I have taken both V03 and V04 with Marta. Defintely a difficult class and at first I didn't like her lecture style. Anything mentioned is fair game on exams. Very knowledgable and willing to discuss outside of class (and not just about bio). If you have to be somewhere don't start up a convo.. lol
This was the hardest class I have taken at VC. She gives a test every single week. 20 questions and it is on the material she covered the week before. Powerpoints dont help too much. She says to read the chapter but I found no benefit in it. You literally have no clue what to study. No studyguides. Wouldn't take her again.
I knew this class would be hard but never expected this. The weekly tests are extremely hard. Does give sheets toward the middle that help. I had to keep changing how I was studying which everything I try isn't helping. Class itself is really interesting and lab is fun but be prepared to work your butt off in this class. Wouldnt recommend
Dr. De Jesus's class is not easy it is tough, but if you go over notes, textbook, and powepoints you will do well. The key is studying to understand, not as much to memorize. You have to understand the concepts. She gives organism sheets that really help on specific tests. Tests are given weekly.
Nice prefessor, but tests are very hard! I am a B student but barely received a passing grade, you have to study at least 2-3 hours a night just to pass the tests. She teaches like a university professor and you should take basic biology before taking her class because you will not understand the terminology. This is the toughest classes I have tak
She just rocks the lectures, making them easier to students!
One of my fav professors here at VC! she is very difficult and her exams are university level. you really need to read from the book. There is no way you can get everything down the night before or even a couple nights before. if youre looking to get the easy A she is not for you. but She is the one that WILL prepare you for when you transfer!
Definitely a tough class to pass. Her lectures aren't clear and she doesn't explain that well. I did better when I wasn't attending her lectures but when I just taught myself. She doesn't really lecture about what's on the test, and that's what most of the grade is dependent on.
I am now attending a University and I have to say Marta's class both V03/V04 gives you a taste of what University life is like. Write your notes during class, rewrite them, draw pictures, make flow charts, form a study group and discuss the concepts. Yes it 's a lot of work but she wants to prepare you for when you transfer. She sure prepared me!
I loved this class. read the book, study for the tests for more than a few days, and take notes in lecture. Her tests can be tricky, since the questions are detailed. This class takes a lot of time and effort, but it's totally worth it!
Difficult class. Though, she is always be willing to help. Her lectures are mostly pictures, which make it hard to write down information. Overall, she's a great teacher and wants you to learn the material. 3 midterms, 1 paper and one final and of course lab quizzes every week as well as 2 lab practicals (tests). 2 field trips- SB zoo and SB Garden
This is a demanding class, lecture is all slides with all the info given orally. There's 3 exams, 1 final, quizzes every Monday (lab), 2 field trips, 2 practicums, and a final paper with a 5 min oral presentation. The prof is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help anytime. Keep up with lecture and don't slack off if you want to pass.
Marta is a good lady, very intelligent and knowledgeable. Her class is demanding, Her tests are hard and shes vague with her instructions at times, shes very talkative so if you like to spark up a good conversation she knows a little something about everything. You can't be a bad student in her class, you have to read the book before tests.
Hardest Professor I ever took but well worth it. Really knows her stuff & is willing to help you out. Exams are tough & any topic is fair game to be in it so read the book & review notes. Lectures are very informative but the book holds all the info. Lab is easy as long you wrote & read the protocols. Can be a little too talkative but cool overall.
She knows a lot about the material, yes, however, I found her tests were very difficult - mainly because her definitions are different than what she states in lecture/in the book. If you want to pass, I suggest recording the lectures. She doesn't use canvas, and all her slides don't have words. She makes it very difficult to get an A at a CC.
Ahhh Marta. Her knowledge is limitless. This class is lecture and lab heavy. Be prepared to study 24/7. This class is definitely university level. If you take this class, you HAVE to find a study group if you want to have a chance.
She's absolutely brilliant, HOWEVER her class is extremely difficult, you need to know every word that she says in lecture and every word in the textbook by heart if you want a good grade. reading the textbook is beyond mandatory. You also really need to go to lecture which was frustrating for me because I hated her lecture style, it was confusing
I took Marta only for lecture, not lab. Her tests are based heavily on the chapters and lectures. She asks VERY specific questions that you would only know from lecture. Studying last minute is not good. I would discourage asking questions during lecture, because sometimes her responses make you feel stupid or regret asking in the first place.
Marta is a very knowledgeable & understanding professor but she's very unorganized. She would email from 11 pm-2 am on the day of the test (including final) and tell you what would be the test the day before. If you take her class and want to pass it's mandatory to attend class, read the textbook, and record lecture. Lecture style: powerpoint/talk.
I needed Biol V03 and Biol V04 to transfer this semester. I was supposed to transfer fall 2019, but due to the level of difficulty of Biol V03, i will be at vc for the rest of my life.... Class of 2030. Take the biology classes somewhere else. TRUST ME.
I highly don't recommend this class. She's the worst professor at VC.
Very good professor. You have to really work hard but micro is hard. She gives extra credit every test which gives you an opportunity to bring your grade up if you messed up. Her extra credit essays are easy just read the articles she gives and go into detail AND get the name of the bacteria correct. Shes also willing to help students.
Though this was the toughest course Ive ever taken, I wouldnt have wanted to take it with any other professor. This class requires a lot of time and effort. Dr. Jesus is very thourogh in her lectures. She makes the material easy to understand and very interesting. She quizzed us every week, however only tests on what she goes over which is fair.
Dont let her RMP score scare you out of taking her classes, if you attend the lectures and read you shouldnt have a problem with her courses. Weekly tests often have extra credit and end up making your grade more than breaking it. This is my first course outside my undergrad so I may be bias but there really is nothing unfair about her classes.
Marta is the worst teacher here at VC. She makes fun of her students for saying things incorrectly. Her tests are extremely hard, even if you study for hours on end like me.
Don't get me wrong, she's knowledgeable and respectable but I'm stressing out. This is an early review because we are almost finished with the semester (during a pandemic) and she was not useful at all. Tests are tough, notes aren't helpful, so much information. Had her for V03 as well. I don't know anymore, I'm just very disappointed in her now
Marta is in FACT the worst professor at VC. Her tests are impossible to pass even with hours of studying. She does not tell u what grade u have the entire semester. She emails at odd times (ex: 12 am-3am). She will not respond emails at all. She is extremely rude & doesnt actually teacher her students. She expects a lot for a CC professor.
Ive had this professor outside the pandemic and the experience was challenging both times but she is extremely intelligent and has so many resources for students. However, It has been SO much harder at home. She is extremely slow to grade labs leaving over 10 ungraded at a time. Her power points are unorganized and can be confusing to follow.
If you are interested in Biology, and learning a ton subject, take her class. Due to covid19,our class had to be online, so I missed out on a ton of fun stuff I heard other of her classes doing. This professor really shows you the beauty of biology and its importance. She grades you on what YOU put into the class. Very self-improving.
Like someone below said, Professor De Jesus' knowledge is limitless. But.. this class is HARD. Test heavy and she does not grade weekly assignments which leaves you to guess your grade the entire semester. Grading rubrics aren't super clear on certain assignments. The lecture tests have questions that were barely mentioned in the book or lecture.
Bio V03 is the worst experience I've had with a professor. As others have said, she knows the subject, but she's terrible at teaching it, I've had to spend the majority of the class teaching myself. If you take her you'll be left to guess your grade the entire time. Doesn't grade assignments. It took her TWO MONTHS to grade our 1st lab (out of 20).
Took her online class and it was dreadful. She is nice outside of class and as said before, knows a lot but isnt good at teaching it. She doesnt grade until last minute and her tests/quizzes are hard to pass even after studying. Studying seems impossible when she doesnt specify what it will be on. Lots of tests are on homework the day its due.
Worst experience I've had with a professor. Her lectures are often full of trivial knowledge that has no benefit to know for the class(sometimes off subject). Assignments are not graded until after the class has ended so you are left guessing, with no feedback. She provides blank study guides that don't help even if you spend hours filling them out
Don't take this class with her. She has graded like 1 assignment all semester and grades are unknown to all. Lectures are useless because she doesn't know how to teach the material, she just talks and throws in random facts. She is so rude every time I have asked a question and can be really condescending. Impossible to study for her class!
She is the worst professor that I have taken at VC. 10 weeks in and she hasn't graded any assignments so nobody has any idea how they're doing. Her exams are impossible and don't give you enough time to finish all the questions. Her lectures are pointless since she just reads off the slides and she always goes past the end time of the class.
Her lecture class is literally pointless. The test does not line up with anything in lecture. Also too many questions for the little time that she allows to take it. She just reads the lecture slides word for word. Do not take her unless she is your last resort. The textbook are not helpful. You're better off going to OC/MC for this specific class
Professor De Jesus loves to lecture about anything and everything, even if its off topic. She won't hesitate to continue lecture after the class is over. As others have said, there is not enough time given to finish the tests and she does not cover all the material on the tests.
Didn't learn anything from V03 or V04, take these classes with another professor or somewhere else. Beware, if you need a full year of bio and take one of these classes at VC, you'll have to take the other one at VC too or retake a full year. The curriculum does not line up with biology from other schools.
