doesn't explain it problems very well, not connected to the students
She seems to have a hard time finding the holes in a person's understanding in chemistry. So, although she is very willing to help, her explanations are very hard to understand. It was very easy for me because I'm already very good at chemistry.
I wrote the 'Horrible' review above and I regret my words. She is just a very hard teacher and I needed to be a more diligent student.
I wrote the horrible comment above and now I wish to take it back. It was unfair and foolish.
she is the best chemistry teacher i've ever had. She is very helpful WHEN YOU ACTUALLY ASK FOR HELP. she is willing to explain anything that you are unclear about she just wants you to take the initiative.
Dr. Zumwalt is an exceptional teacher. She is very clear with her explanations and helps out alot. There is a reason for office hours people... anyhoo... she is the best chemistry teacher i've ever had! She gives out practice exams and homework that will help you out ALOT on the quizzes. She's straight to the point and does not try to trick you.
Like Chemistry? Take this class. Don't like Chemistry? Then don't. Exams are fair but can be really difficult. Her labs are fun and enjoyable. Homework (objective sheets) and quizzes are once a week.
I got C in her class. And I was working hard. My chemist boyfriend tutored me but it didn't seem to help a lot in her class. She is a hard grader, I think. Also, her objective sheets with numerous problems each week really stressed me out. I even had some health problems thanks to this class as well. Wanna work your ass off, take this class!
This class is hard work, weekly quizzed, homework. Her lectures r rlly boring, especially in lab, she tends to go on and go....Dont fall behind this class or else u wont be able to pass. this class requires a lot of work. Each week the lectures seems to get faster, because we wouldd do like a 1 chap a week, if u didnt know wat was on w.e. chapter tha
i took her for chem 101a lab. Dr Zumwalt helped me alot.
very challenging course. expect to study constantly to pass this class... not graded on a class curve. Teacher is fair but will not hold your hand, if you need help its up to you to ask for it and go to the tutors. Good class but be warned: you have to study hard and work hard for a good grade.
Dr. Zumwalt is an excellent teacher, probably the best professor i've had at CCSF. She expects a lot from her students. Her tests are fairly challenging but she teaches well enough and clearly enough to set you up for success, assuming you actually put a little bit of effort into it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! She is a really hard teacher. Unless chemistry is your major, do not take her. I consider myself a hard working student. I never miss class, i study study study, and i take school seriously. But I have to say, this is one of the worst teachers that I have ever had.
Extremely well organized and clear lectures. Approachable and helpful. Just study for quizes, this will help your grade and make all exams easier. Take this class and you'll learn what you need to know - I highly recommend her!
Dr Zumwalt expects you to work hard. She will warn you that you need at least 15 hours a week studying to pass, it is true, read the book before the lecture. She can't cover everything so lectures on what she feels is important or difficult. covered 14 chapters,I heard that other classes only went through 10,almost 30 % less work. No class curve.
great professor!!!!!
this class is HARD!! you have to spend a lot of time for chemistry, at"least 15 hours" . You should read the chapter before going to class. In class she goes way to fast, and hardly explains it.One chapter a week, thats too fast! we have quizzes every thursday which are ten points each,(try to do good on those), and test are fill in and mult.choice.
Like others have stated, this teacher is hard. She's stringent & will deduct points on little unworthy things. If you are good with Chemistry & know you'll be able to earn a lot of points, & want to be challenged, then take her. She's helpful sometimes, but has weird attitude on other time.Don't expect her to have understanding or sympathy for you.
She's very clear when explaining and when copying her notes off the board, I understand my notes later! WOW! haha she's really nice and very helpful.
She is one of the hardest teacher I ever had. Read and understand the book and you'll get a good grade. Quiz every week. Exams are crazy hard.
Yes. She is hard, but if you don't want to be there don't take her class. She says from the beginning that you need 15 hours outside of class and she means it. She's fair, straightforward, and ALWAYS available when you're struggling. She is one of the most dedicated teachers I've ever had.
She is a tough teacher. so what? She teaches the course clearly, there are no surprises. Is it so crazy to expect students to come to class and do the homework? Maybe so, expect to spend a fair amount of time on this class. Good luck.
hot! must come to class, take clear notes and you will only have to skim the book at most. extremely clear and dictates perfect notes.
Dr. Zumwalt's was definitely not easy, but she is clear helpful and and enthusiastic about teaching. My advice is do NOT miss class, reed the textbook and do the extra credit she assigns. She is willing to sit down with you during office hours and help you on whatever you need(i suggest you utilize this as much as possible)Overall, GREAT instructor
Dr. Zumwalt is an excellent professor. She makes everything clear that you don’t really need to read the textbook. My advices are: take notes, do all the worksheets, comprehend the materials, don’t miss classes. Don’t be afraid ask her questions.same for the lab. one more little thing. HELP her with the calculation and the spelling as well.LOL.
I had no idea about Chemistry before I took her class and I magically got an A in the end. Dr. Zumwalt is very clear with what she wants and what you need to do to get an A in the class. Her lectures and lively and understandable. She writes down great notes.
If you're ready to be challenged, take her. She is a hard one :( But she wants you to do well so if she sees you mess up on a test but show her you learned something shell give you partial points. Quizzes every weak but she takes one off. 3 exams and a final! Probably going to get a C in her class. Sneaking out of lab is especially hard LOL
I wish I would have had a chemistry teacher like her in highschool;extremely passionate about her subject, really wants her students to succeed, but you gotta put in the hours. I had never taken chem before and I studied really hard. She is fair and a really nice person.
WEEKLY QUIZEES WERE EASY BUT THE EXAMS WERE REALLY HARD.
Generic lectures. She doesn't use examples, layman terms, so it was difficult to grasp the concept. Armstrong's Chem book helped me understand more, not her lectures. I remember her telling me that she's more of a chemist than an educator. I asked myself why she's even teaching, and not working for Genentech?
Ridiculously fast pace, very picky about order/answers, quizes are broad and exams take the whole time and if not more. Lectures are compressed by heavy content and she often uses every minute of it--that means she'll squeeze in the beginning of dense chapters. If you take this class, be prepared to live in the library with a tudor/study group.
I adore this teacher, she is the best: very-well organized, knows her subject, explains every problem so that makes sense. If you are taking higher levels of Chemistry, you must take her class. Because when moving onto the next class, you are find yourself prepared.
One of a very few professors i respect in college. Weekly quiz (14~) is directly from lectures. drop lowest. Copy everything she writes down. I put in like 1-2 hours on quiz, easy A. If you understand the topic inside out, then easy A.
Very fair. Her lectures are super organized and include examples that she explains clearly & thoroughly. The textbook used is also very good. If you take good notes, put in the time, you'll do well. She throws no punches on the tests. Also, she is quirky and makes class interesting. Definitely recommended.
she is a nice professor but she grades extremely strict! and one more thing, she does not give any extra credit
Tough class, but none of my frustrations were due to her teaching style/policies. Very fair and very willing to help you out during her office hours. If this is your last required chemistry class and you're looking for an easy A, I'd look elsewhere; if you're going to be doing a lot more chemistry in later coursework, I highly recommend her.
This class is very hard. She is helpful and nice, but her exams are really hard. If you are majoring in chemistry you'll do well. If you are taking chemistry because you have to for your major, take someone else. I put a lot of time and I still had to withdraw.
Worst teacher ever.Very unhelpful, no use in the textbook and only gives worksheets with answers for you to figure out. Topics are switched all around and there are no set plans. Not relating to the field of engineering. Visiting her during office hours, she becomes unhelpful and rude. I would not recommend taking her for this course.
Medical Chemistry won't be easy no matter who teaches it. That being said, Zumwalt provides excellent study guides that make acing the tests much easier than they could be. Zumwalt is very passionate about chemistry and teaching, and if you take the initiative she will help you after class if you are falling behind.
Horrible teacher. BORING. Could not be bothered during office hours. I dropped her immediately and took Hickey. I dropped into his office when I thought he had office hours and he helped me anyway for a whole HOUR. You do not realize what a crappy teacher is until you take Chemistry from someone who ACTUALLY CARES that you pass.
Great professor. You get weekly quizzes that help you study, so you don't feel you cant remember anything when you have the actual test. she explains clearly and its easily understandable.
Professor Zumwalt made chemistry fun and engaging. She has great energy and is inspires you to achieve success. This course is not easy but if you do what she says..."Work more problems!" using the problems in the textbook, you will succeed. If you don't read the text and work all the problems you don't stand a chance. She is also SUPER cute!
Very kind, very sweet professor. Makes chemistry really interesting by being very clear on instructions, giving excellent feedback on assignments, and extremely helpful with answering questions. Homework not mandatory but recommended. Quiz/exam guidelines are clear, and material you are tested on is directly from lecture, which helps for passing.
Ms. Zumwalt is a very kind professor, who cares for her students. It is true that the class is hard, but Chem 32 is gonna be hard NO MATTER WHO TEACHES IT. However, her lectures are clear, she is organized, and explains the subject very well. She's always willing to help you, whether in-class or out-of-class, during her office hours. Take her!
Prof. Zumwalt was really engaging because she was energetic and was really into her stuff. Although, she's really a tough grader especially on exams! She gives out at least 15+ questions with sub-questions and some of those questions are worth 7-12 pts. So if you answer one of those questions incorrectly, you're losing majority of your exam score.
To say this class is "hard" is an understatement. Prof. Zumwalt has clear instructions and is helpful outside of class, but try to take chem 32 by itself and without working if possible. It is brutal. I've been an ICU nurse for 15 years and I'm back in school to finish my BSN. Half the class dropped. I worked my butt off and only got a B.
Chem 32 is a difficult class. She makes the material pretty understandable. Definitely study and put in the effort or you won't pass (it is Chem 32 after all) but she is more than willing to help you along the way. As a bonus she is extremely nice and charming!
She moved VERY fast. In only our first week of class she went through two chapters.. The General Chem part of the semester wasn't too bad, but later on she went way too fast and the material was harder. Grades tough, will mark you down on the littlest things, and exams are tough they barely reflect the study guide she gives.
SHE IS VERY NICE AND DO A LOT PRACTICES IN LECTURE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND PROBLEMS.
Dr. Zumwalt is extremely knowledgeable about Chem. She really wants you to succeed. My critiques are more about the format of Chem 32 Summer; THE CLASS IS INSANE, it almost broke me, but I got that A... last 10 days: midterm 4, quiz 5, lab report, 13hrs lecture/lab, Midterm 5, Lab Final, Final Exam Her final exam was twice as hard as any test.
Online course during summer is fast paced. That being said, online lectures aligned with exams; if she didn't cover the material, its not on the exam. Do your homework! If a genuine effort is made to learn the material, a student should do well. I imagine non-summer classes are much more doable than a summer class. I loved how Canvas was used.
just no
I have never met that unfair and tough grading teacher!! she marks you down literally on everything so after you put a lot of time and hard work on this subject you end up with 0. Do not take her if you want to be succesful
I love the platform of this hybrid class - its great to choose when to do your lectures and to be able to play them at your preferred speed. However, I found Professor Zumwalt a very hard grader and gave a lot of extra busy work. The weekly quizzes online are very difficult and come too frequently - i could barely learn all the info before quizzes.
I took CHEM32 hybrid class. Her lectures online are amazing. Very well organized and approachable. This is not an easy A but watch the her lecture videos, take notes, read the book, do the quizzes and youll be fine! I recommend her because she makes things easier to understand and chemistry is a hard class.
I love her! She's one of the nicest professor I've ever taken in CCSF. Her study guide helps you a lot for exams. The cheat sheet for the cumulative final exam helps a lot. Beware that her final exams are harder than her 4 regular exams. Just make sure to do everything she wants you to do and make sure to UNDERSTAND everything on the practice exam.
Chem 32 hybrid class was very organized. Good thing about this course is that she posts video lectures on canvas and if you didnt understand a chapter you can go back and watch it again. I did all homework and watched all videos but I still got a C. This class is very hard and requires a lot of time and effort for an A.
This is a very challenging course and the class average is about 69-71 on each exam. She is a very good teacher but she sets very definite boundaries. Each letter grade is lowered by 5% at the start but there is no further curving. An 85 is the cutoff for an A and there were about 3 / 40 in my class. Be prepared to work your butt off.
I highly recommend Dr. Zumwalt. I can't ask for more from a professor. I think she is a very diligent professor and cares about teaching. I learned something from her beyond Chemistry - the work attitude. The course itself is basic. It doesn't really go deep into the hard concepts. If you do what she asks you to do, it is moderately an easy A.
This class is insanely difficult. I am an older student with a good work ethic and i put a TON of effort into this class only to get a B. The worst part is i will never apply any of this information. I don't know who is in charge of the curriculum, but it's unfeasible to expect this much.
This class was the HARDEST class I've ever taken. You really have to work to get that A in her class. She's nice and all, but her quizzes and exams are super hard. She's very specific about what she wants when it comes to her exams and quizzes. Your grade is dependent on the exams, quizzes, and the final. I barely passed the class. No extra credit.
Super fast-paced class. Teacher is responsive, but the exams are really challenging. Gave over 10 hours a week to study and still couldn't get an A. Never a break from work, not even on spring break, and she gives new material when there is exam so you have to study for two materials at once.
Dr. Zumwalt is fantastic. The online lecture/in-person lab format isnt for everyone but if you are able to manage your time well, it is a great way to learn. Expect to spend significant time outside of class every week studying, but if you do you can succeed. Quizzes and exams are tough but Dr. Z is super fair. Would highly recommend her to all!!
don't. has a clear schedule that doesn't change, but the schedule doesn't make any sense and will set you up for failure and missed points. the textbook is way more helpful than she is.
Dr Zumwalt is organized, knowledgable, accessible, passionate about chemistry. She wants you to succeed but you have to put in the effort and do the work. She responds to email quickly. She is particular about what she wants to see in your work. Write it her way. It's a relentless fast-pace hybrid class. Don't like hybrid? Don't take it. Loved her!
Dr. Zumwalt is great. I like her video lectures. It's easy to understand and take notes. Even it is summer class, I feel it easy because of her reasonable lecture schedule for every week.
This class is not easy, but Dr. Zumwalt is a very kind professor. She will help you throughout the semester. It would help if you worked hard to get that A.
I took this class for nursing pre-req and it was definitely not an easy A. if you are looking fo ran easy A,B, or C, this is definitely not the class. you need a 60 to pass and its not easy as it seems, you have to work for it. She DOES NOT CURVE GRADE. NO EXTRA CREDIT. Grades are based off of test. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO TAKE WITH HER.
If you do your work properly then youll pass her class. Class itself is hard already but she can help you during meetings if you have any questions. Feels like the questions from the quizzes are more harder than some of the exam questions.
She's horrible at teaching!!Her lectures don't help at all, the book is so much more helpful than her lectures. Your grades will highly be based on the 4 exams given throughout the course. If you want an A, make sure you do well on these exams. Doing well on the Final or other assignments is useless.I love chem but this teacher made it traumatizing
Dr. Zumwalt is organized. I like the way her class is set up with online lectures. It's a must to read chapters, do suggested homework and watch her lectures. I spent 15 + hours a week on this class. As someone who had 3 other classes I suggest to take this class alone or with one other class. It is an insane amount of work, but an A is possible.
She is nice and her lectures are informative, but the work is cutthroat. 4 big tests, 2 parts final exam, a quiz and a discussion each week. Labs are fairly easy because the results are given and you only have to watch the lab lectures to find the answers. About 1/3 of my class dropped out because they could not complete the work.
Dr. Z is absolutely amazing. Her class was designed as an online class and the amount of work she did on the front end to make the class as organized as it is must have been absolutely monstrous. She cares a ton about the success of her students. Amazing class, would 10/10 recommend. Be ready to put in a lot of work and study hard!
She's very approachable and nice but this is a very hard class. I recommended not taking it with any of classes if you want above a C. She's very OCD and strict when it comes to assignments, so learn her way. Her quizzes unlocking Sunday night was annoying and the lectures are heavy. Take good notes and do the textbook problems, you will pass.
Hardest class Ive taken. I suggest you only take 1 other class. I put in well over 10 hours a week. The amount of work is unreasonable and unfair. I suggest you study every day even weekends to keep it fresh. At times the chapters overlap so youll have to study 2 chapters at once.
Expect to spend 14-16+ hours every week to get an A. Do all of the homework problems and every single assignment and quiz. Ask questions during office hours. Not many ways around it- this class takes time but it is logical and systematic and the hard work will pay off. Requires a big time commitment so don't take a bunch of other hard classes.
I'm terrible at chemistry but I studied HARD and had a tutor and I got by with a B. She is very tech-savvy so the online part was great. You will need to read the chapters and I suggest that you do all of the practice problems because you'll need to post and discuss on canvas about them. The lab part is fun, tests are HARD!
Marta was a great teacher. She really cares about her students. Do every extra credit she assigns. Make sure you study all the material. You will need to put a lot of effort to even pass the class.
Marta Zumwalt is a solid teacher. Her lectures are concise, the actual required amount of work is pretty minimal, and she sets up the class such that your grade is reflective of how much effort you put in studying. If you already are comfortable with most of the concepts, you can expect to spend
Dr. Z is nice and approachable but her type of teaching isn't meant for everyone. Even though her class is considered "in person" most of her work is asynchronous. We are expected to watch 6+ video lectures a week and come into class already knowing the material. If you are more of a hands on "in person" learner I wouldn't suggest taking her class.
Dr. Zumwalt is an amazing Chemistry professor and has created a space of actually enjoying chemistry. Her teaching style is very straightforward and helps clear up any questions about how to approach and solve chemistry. I loved my semester with her and would love to take her course again!
Dr Z is super nice and a great person. She makes all of the lectures online and uses in person lecture times to do problems in class. As expected from a chemistry class, the tests are super hard, average of 60, so be prepared for low grades on them. If you can stay on top of work and put in about 9 hours a week, you should pass.
Very difficult class She rambles off in lectures frequently and you basically have to learn all of the material yourself. Your grade is test based but big curve to the grade. A= 85 B=75 C=60. Test material is incredibly hard and you will STILL be learning the exam material on the same week of your exam. I had a 74.9 and she wouldn't round it to B.
She is a great teacher but the only problem was that I found the assignment a bit to tough for me and even the exam where sometimes bit more tough then I anticipated. But if you like science you will love this course.
She's a nice teacher, but the class material is really intense, it's actually harder than what she said and definitely tougher than the practice problems she gives before the test. You'll need to study a lot on your own. That said, the lab is fun and there isn't too much homework!
Very kind and caring professor. The material is difficult, but the professor wants you to succeed and will help you out when you need it, especially during labs. Labs were fun and very engaging. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS! Your grade heavily depends on 3 exams plus the final and the only way to do well is to practice, practice, practice!
Great Prof. Super approachable. 3 test + 1 final worth 60% of your grade. Everything else is worth the remaining 40%. Study for the tests and do the practice problems. She understands it is a hard class and curves the grading scale. A=>85,B=>75,C=>60. Hard to fail, but also hard class. Very nice person and makes the labs enjoyable. Lots of hw.
The professor is super accessible and makes learning chemistry a lot easier even though it is a very hard class. Go to office hours, if you can, and do the suggested problems!
She's very nice and helpful, she responds to emails if you have questions very quickly and will work on homework problems in lecture as requested. Whenever I was stumped on a problem I'd email her or ask her to go over it during lecture and that was really helpful. DO ALL THE HW AND GO INTO DETAIL WHEN DOING THE STUDY GUIDES BEFORE TESTS
