Pretty boring, feeds off class involvement so be sure to speak up and the class will go by fast. Love Sex and Gender is actually pretty boring, the books you read aren't all that good,a lot of the students complained about how bad the books were. Pretty boring prof otherwise
Dr.Martha Addante's SSH 205 (Academic writing and Research) class went okay. She's lenient sometimes but don't slack on the work because she marks keen on grammar syntax and structure.
takes forever to put up marks, never answers emails, very bad communication. to me her feedback wasnt detailed either. super boring as well, and it irked me that somehow every article discussion turned into transvestites and how religion is fake rather than learning how to write. if you want to learn something, anything, take a different prof.
Very helpful but picky with grammer and syntax. Really great one on one and expects a lot from a first year student.
Read the textbook before hand and attend and talk in class or else she won't remember your name. Watch your grammar and syntax when writing. Her lectures can be boring and unnecessary and can go on tangents about Star Trek or BSG. Takes forever to mark assignments and awful communication on blackboard.
Didn't give a single example of a "good" thesis statement. Marks hard and leaves no comments or few comments. Takes forever to get assignments back to you. Wouldn't recommend this course.
The actual course is horrible. She's a pretty tough marker at first, but once you learn her expectations and what exactly the course entails it gets easier. Very fair in giving a good review for the exam and marked pretty leniently.
At the start of the term, I didn't like her at all. But as the material started to get more interesting, so did her perspectives on the readings too. All profs for this class grade hard, but if you know how to write well and prove a point, you'll be fine. Do the readings too, for yourself - she won't care if you don't.
Okay overall, but can have her rude moments. Definitely ask questions, and she'll clarify them for you!
Martha is a no-nonsense type of lady. If you do the work you'll be fine, however, forget to staple your work together and she will come after you. Really great one-on-one and very funny in the deadpan sarcastic kind of way. She is also obsessed with Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars. If you love sci-fi she is great to talk to.
Hardest marker I have ever had! I'm a straight A student and she hands out C's, had my peers and another professor read the same paper and all disagreed with her grading. If you are comfortable in the C range then go for it, the course is interesting enough, but if your GPA matters please please please stay away!
Overall, I enjoyed her as a person. She is a very nice lady and easy to get along with. The course content is very dry but she tries her best to make it interesting and helpful for the students. She marks fairly hard but if you pay attention to her expectations it is not hard to do well.
She is generally a nice lady and easy to approach and she will clarify any confusions you have. She is however an extremely hard marker. Try to implement the lessons as much as you can into your writing and take advantage of the participation and free marks she gives, they will help boost you grade.
Unbelievably tough grader, especially for a 1st year class. Impossible to know what your grade is until after the course is completed because she has hardly marked a single thing. Even if mandatory, would still say to avoid this prof entirely or risk failing what should be an easy course to pass. (Thumbs Down)
Quite a hard class for first year. She's also extremely rude and just overall not a warm person, which made it hard to enjoy the class. Marked way too hard and did not receive adequate feedback despite asking over email and in person. Has a weird thing for staplers. Incoming frosh, if you have her, try your best to transfer!
The class is extremely dry, but she is great one-on-one and although she can seem a little cold in lectures, if you talk to her she is quite helpful. Her notes can are all over the place, but if you do the readings, you'll be okay. If you put in the work and take advantage of the free marks and participation, you can do extremely well.
If you don't have to take the class, then don't. Not worth it and didn't really improve my writing skills at all. Heavily structured material, so just copy and past from the textbook and your notes. If you aren't well suited with harsh speaking profs then I suggest you never take one of Martha's classes, hated it.
I don't understand why people in the other comments are saying she is rude, mean, etc. she is genuinely a nice person and is very easy to talk to. As long as you show her that you care about doing well, she will help you.
Martha requires you to hand in everything on time, there is a lot of textbook reading, but the exam review is exactly what the exam was, which was helpful.
She's sweet and really cares about literature.
Hardest grader and rude. Has some obsession with paper copies and staples. Not printed? You cannot hand it in. Does not care about students other than making sure they get horrible marks. And best part is for the 2 sentences of feedback we get back, her handwriting is not even legible. Good luck to me.
An extremely hard marker! Teaches harder curriculum that other classes arent studying...a lot of reading and writing and mundane assessments. We only got marked on 2 essays and our exam which sucks! Big thumbs down and avoid this professor at all costs
Prof Addante is very passionate and ready to help.
Addante is an awful professor. Does not explain the teachings properly and does not answer the questions asked. Does not give you any extra advice or help if you need it. I went to every single class and performed well and she still gave me an awful mark that did not reflect my performance. I do NOT suggest to her.
She can sometimes seem a little scary but she's a really honest and nice person. As a professor she is tough but she knows her stuff and tries her best to clarify anything that you may not understand, however, you must put in the effort to go find her and ask for help if you want to improve (which is fair and understandable).
Not a great prof. Does not follow curriculum other classes follow. Grades tough but without proper feedback. Very repetitive. Awful assigned text. Nothing was learned or retained which is unfortunate as it was a writing and research class.
I feel kind of bad. In the first class of the semester she seemed enthusiastic about educating, and when she asked simple questions, the class was silent (myself included). She was noticeably salty afterwards. You need to be sharp and participate (10%!!). Don't slack off. This is the first prof where re-reading my work was actually necessary.
Took a English course with her and she seems like a great prof! She gives great feedback when asked, is always ready and willing to help out if you need anything. Class is not too hard if you attend them, but loads of reading materials.
Professor Addante is a great teacher, she challenges her students to become better writers. She is very approachable and gives great feedback. Make sure to ask a lot of questions and Professor Addante will always be ready to help. As long as you show that you care about your work Professor Addante will guide you in the right direction.
She constantly talks about how good of a writer she is because she's an English major something like that. Also, she says one thing and then switches up when it comes to attendance and it is mandatory so yeah.... and she's always busy like she doesn't have genuine office hours it's always "just show up before or after of one of my classes"
There are many moments in life that tear you down, that make the motive to carry on difficult. This class is like that moment, except much worse. In simple words, I would rather eat a bowl of needles rather than enter her class. Her handwriting is horrid, and she doesn't offer good explanation for her assignments. Not a good class in any regard.
I just took her course and I loved her. Granted I didn't pass but that was simply because I didnt hand in the final assignment. You'll have a good time in this class if you let yourself. It was one of my favorite classes and I've heard others call it theirs too. Literally look at the rubric and follow it and you'll be perfect.
She can be a bit intimidating at first but overall she's a great professor and lecturer, always gave great examples and great feedback. Gave us as much time as possible to do our essays and was available for help. I didn't really find the textbook helpful, her notes were much more understandable.
Dr. Addante was a wonderful professor. She is laid back, approachable, and is willing to answer any questions you may have. I gave her a 4/5 only because I felt that the classes were not structured enough for my taste, and there were no PPT notes which made it challenging if you had to miss a class. But overall, these are minor things.
Honestly she's a fine prof. The course material is dry bc it's just about essay writing but she tries to make it engaging. Assigned interesting essay topics. Sweet lady trying to get people excited about essays and APA lol Participation 10%, Essay 25%, Final proposal 10%, Final essay 30%, Final exam 25% +5% bonus marks for 2 in-class peer reviews
SSH205 is just about the most BORING thing I have ever done. Everybody at least it improves your writing... NO. Prof makes you go to class wait for 2 hours and gives you USELESS feedback. ex. draft of essay exchange prof would say you need to make it longer YES NO SH*T IST A DRAFT!! Don't think shes a bad person but just a HORRID class.
I think everyone complaining just wasnt very good at writing, if you actually participate in this class and attend the lectures it will come. very naturally. She is a kind professor, however, I think shes tired of people asking the same questions constantly so she may come across as cold.
She isn't nearly as bad as the other reviews make her out to be. The class wasn't too structured but as long as you ask for feedback and follow the guidelines on the rubric, you're good. Also a fair grader. She's a little intimidating at first but she does take the time to get to know her students and help them.
Very difficult grader. Does not post rubrics and her grading criteria is unclear. Does not offer extra credit options. She is receptive to student feedback about her course. The assignments themselves are short and not too difficult (despite her hard marking).
I saw her ratings before taking the class and was scared, but she really is an amazing person and teacher. She gives a lot of chances for easy marks and will provide ample feedback when you reach out to her. My advice is this: Show up to class even though it isn't mandatory, ask her to look over your theses before submitting, and do the peer edits
Dr. Addante is understanding and helpful when you asking her questions. Instruction at times are vague. Although, she gave opportunities for students to improve there mark on the midterm assignment. Overall, Dr. Addante is a good professor.
Although SSH205 is an incredibly boring course, Professor Addante made it a lot more interesting. She is a very good lecturer, and very approachable as well.
Wonderful prof! Truly wants students to succeed and do well. Gave helpful feedback, opportunities to improve grades. I took this course online and although there was a lot of reading the content was organized and thoughtfully planned which made it easier to keep up with. Zoom meetings weren't mandatory but I highly recommend them for the insight!
She is a really tough grader. If you can avoid her class do it. Her class is graded based on 3 papers, which all are heavily weighted. Even with all the effort you put in, don't always expect to get an A. If you need this as a core elective, try to find a different course, or a higher rated instructor. Please try to keep in mind her RMP reviews.
She was always late to class by 5-10 minutes and rarely had an actual lesson plan so the classes only ever lasted 20-40 minutes. Honestly, I would have learned more by watching video essays on Youtube. Her marking was arbitrary and her feedback was incomprehensible. I am appalled by how little she seemed to try. Professor Addante should be ashamed.
She was nonchalant, she also allowed us to hand in work via Google Docs so that she could edit it and give us precise feedback, which I liked. HOWEVER, her marking was terrible. For my final essay, I got a 65. I made sure to follow her guidelines. After I received this mark I showed my paper to my uncle who is an ENG PROF and he disagreed with her
Awesome Prof, wants her students to do well and will help you get there if you put in the effort. Attend the lectures even if they aren't mandatory!
a word of advice is to make sure you do the bonus point assignments it will literally save you. She's a super tough grader but really kind and caring.
Professor Addante is so nice and caring! She is the best professor I have ever had because she takes time to clear up all questions one has and provides extra credit as well!
She was always happy to answer questions and was a tremendous help with essays. My only advice: do yourself a favour and do the bonus assignments! Easy extra 5%.
Amazing prof. Really cares about her students and knows they need extensions and is very lenient. Fair marker and lectures are not mandatory. Accessible after class and is very helpful. Assignments are not too difficult and she will read over your thesis and let you know if you are in the right direction. Overall, a great prof!
Professor Addante is really nice and approachable and is always happy to answer any questions or go over the material as many times as needed. However, she is a really tough grader and she does not give very clear feedback.
Prof. Addante is so sweet and really does care for you. She noticed I was struggling with an essay topic and she gave me an extension and helped me out. The course is incredibly boring, but she does try her best to help you.
She is very understanding when it comes to extensions and general questions about the course, marking is fair as well. The participation marks are easy and engaging. I did not attend a single synchronous class or do any of the weekly work, the concepts are very straightforward.
really nice woman, very caring and replies to emails quickly. always offers to meet virtually to give feedback. quite a tough marker though, or maybe the class is just complex. lots of bonus marks that are very easy to complete. really wants students to do well. writing about 5 essays for the course. do not bother buying the textbook, not used once
I was unsure of how to write properly regarding university standards but Prof. Addante really helped set things for me. She may be intimidating and meticulous when it comes to grading and giving criterias, but she's pretty real and her ability to be blunt can be what you need sometimes.Very lenient and understanding as well, highly recommend!
She was honesty lovely. I would rather her SSH205 class than any other because the participation is based on discussion post that aren't marked compared to hw that is marked. She is very helpful and isn't a hard marker. Just do the work and submit it and you'll be fine.
Listen to me, please, please, please do the bonus assignments. They are easy and worthwhile considering Addante is a relatively hard marker. There are weekly discussion posts, a midterm essay, final essay and final exam. She is a straight forward prof, so take advantage to ask her questions, she helps when it comes to ur uncertainties on ur writing
Such boring material. I wish this credit wasn't mandatory. We went through the same things multiple times, constantly applying evolved thesis. It gets boring to a point where I dread doing the work because its so mind-numbing.
She is clear with grading criteria, and is pretty easy to talk to if you don't understand. I'm a strong writer and I didn't need the textbook, as long as you can write a decent essay you will be fine. She gives extra credit assignments, and you have to do the homework, but as long as you fill all requirements its pretty easy.
She is a very hard maker so beware. She does give a lot of feedback and is quite accessible outside of class but even applying her feedback doesn't change ur mark much. I'm a really good writer however in addante's class i found myself averaging 75's even when applying her feedback. Please just avoid her if you can. if you can't come to class & try
an incredibly tough grade for someone who does not teach. she would only go over assignments during classes, all learning was done outside of class. she would just post a big word document that you could honestly find online that you would have to teach yourself. assignment each week plus mandatory discussion posts. massive waste of time and money.
I took Prof. Addante online CENG 101 spring class. Although the class is structured well and the readings are interesting, the extremely hard marking ruins everything. She makes herself available, however her marking and expectations are inflexible and harsh. If you want to preform well, avoid this professor at all costs.
Addante is very caring and genuinely wants her students to do well. I recommend her! Her marking may be somewhat tough but criteria and guidelines are set.
I DO NOT recommend taking a class from her, I would never if this course was not mandatory. I hated every moment I was in that class and every moment where I had to do work for it. I have learned NOTHING but only stress. The exams she made us do were so unnecessary and taught me nothing. DO NOT PICK HER COURSES IF THIS COURSE IS NOT MANDATORY!!
Although professor Addante is a very sweet person in class, the syllabus was extremely confusing, the articles assigned had nothing to do with our learning, she is an extremely tough grader and is difficult to talk to outside of class. The midterm and final exam were extremely difficult and unfair. if you're trying to pass- just do the readings.
If this course isn't mandatory DO NOT TAKE IT!! This class was a waste of my time, especially with Prof Addante. I didn't learn a thing and we didn't do much in class. She is a really tough grader, her standards are a little too high. Would not recommend.
Professor Addante is a very hard grader, her feedback is often vague and unclear. It was very often that the majority of the class did not do well on essays, she is picky so take your time when completing assignments. While she does provide rubrics which might be helpful, the standard to which she holds you is very high.
Her classes aren't lectures, it's for you to ask questions or discuss the upcoming assignments. There is a lot of reading. I didn't get below the 80s in any of the exams and I didn't put much energy into the class. DO THE DISCUSSIONS! She marks them very nicely, I would've received an A+ if I didn't ignore the discussions for the first few weeks.
Im begging you to not take this class if it isn't mandatory. Literally made no sense, i didn't learn a single thing in that class. The prof is nice and understanding but a tough grader. DO THE DISCUSSION POST AND EXTRA CREDITS!!! You can do the class without attending the lecture but i recommend you go so it makes more sense.
Shes a really tough grader, many people failed and one of my friends failed with a 49 smh. honestly i did okay considering i stopped showing up after the midterm. Im a pretty good student this was my worst mark out of A's. If i were you i would not take her.
Dr. Addante taught this class incredibly well. This is a class that deals with some weird content that can be hard to understand at first, but this proffessor is very attentive, and she will answer any questions you have. If you ask, she'll give you great feedback on incomplete work to help you get the best mark possible. She was a lovely prof.
Prof Addante is kind but the midterm and final seemed unnecessarily difficult, and more based on memorization than applying essay writing skills. While I ended with a good grade, I haven't retained anything from this class that seems all that useful. She is also very tough on marking, and the assignments are kind of random.
She's very kind and understanding, so don't worry. Just do your work responsibly and stay up to task. Then you'll be just fine!!!
Prof Addante is pretty good. Obviously, as this is an English course, expect to read and write a lot. She's is very organized when it comes to course work. Work isn't difficult, but feedback can be vague so you've got to ask all your questions when you have any. Marking is fair, lots of bonus opportunities, use them, go to class.
I was a bit nervous for Prof Addante's class but it went very well. Be prepared to read from the textbook and answer weekly on the discussion board. Fairly easy. On essay papers, her feedback is very limited and hard to understand what she wants but as long as you do your best, you'll be fine. Very kind, if you have questions she will answer!
Very caring and passionate professor, don't be afraid to ask questions because she will help! Get ready to read from the textbook and answer weekly discussions. The essays were pretty straightforward, but her feedback is very limited and sometimes hard to understand, but as long as you try your best you'll be fine.
Professor Addante was a great person to have as a professor, however, the material in this course lacks interest, even for her. Consequently the course is not very fun, but she tries her best to help you through it. She is a bit of a tough grader, but also cares about your success and is very personable.
At one point I thought I was gonna fail this course but her grading criteria is very clear-cut and straightforward so just by following that I was able to pull through very well. Lectures were boring but she responds to emails very quickly and made an effort to learn people's names (p.s. don't get the textbook; it's a waste of money).
very passionate about her job but she thinks her class is the only course we have all semester. so many stuff to do, we have other things we have to do goddd. class is so heavy for no reason, its a writing class bfr.
Do NOT take this professor if you plan on doing well in SSH 205, no teaching, no practice NOTHING
Addante was very helpful, she was my first professor for my first ever uni class and she was very sweet and caring. Personally, I love writing so her class was not hard for me to pass. Take her advice on your paper and it'll get you a better grade trust!
prof is always willing to give feedback during the rough stages of work- she helped me revamp my thesis for the midterm like 4 times. shes very reasonable with her marking, and i think anyone who rated her low is just mad they did bad in the class- its just like with anything, the more effort u put in the more u get out of it.
This professor gets one point removed for difficulty because of bonus mark assignments she gave. Around a total of 1 hour of lecturing throughout the semester between all the classes. Marks are very biased, and has this arrogance in her presence when students ask questions. Very unpleasant course. It speaks to her teaching when 7/50 students attend
gives out bonus assignments worth 5%, which drastically increases marks. Also, there is a textbook, but I never bought it and I did perfectly fine in this class. Make sure you understand how to properly make an "evolved thesis." I lost a lot of marks for that, start with a thesis and then contradictory evidence, and lastly neutralize the thesis
If you have her for a required class, switch out immediately. She treats the lectures as though it is high school, making you do worksheets on your own and taking it up with the class without teaching it in the first place. She doesnt teach anything and expects you to know whats going on. Do not take her!!!
This is coming from someone who likes to read and English subjects... I think her layout of the course and how she conducts it is productive and easy to grasp. She gives clear feedback and is accessible outside of class. The actual content is interesting, and if you're determined and on task, you will be just fine.
No. Absolutely no. Try to find another prof for this course. She is a tough grader and I didn't find her feedback to be helpful. She also caters more to students who participate in class, even when she just rambles about life lessons instead of teaching. Regardless, she's still kind, but her class is more boring and frustrating than engaging.
She seems very nice and approachable and she is, but her grading is so nit-picky and sucks so bad. I got a 50% on the essay, but got 95% on essay for other classes in the same semester and put the same effort into them all. She just is too strict with the grading and is not open to reason about the grades at all.
She is a very kind prof, very approachable but... Her templates for essays don't make one inch of sense, and she does not help at all in trying to understand it. I have a hunch that *she* understands what she means by "evolving a thesis" or "topic-argument-significance", but she just does not know how to explain it in a way that is replicable.
Don't get me wrong she is a very kind person, just not a great professor. She teaches new concepts as if you've learnt them before and expects you to pick things up right away. Her lecture slides are very vague, and don't teach you how to apply material. Honestly reading the textbook taught me more. Cried almost everyday after this class.
Hand written essays got to go. Pretty sure we're supposed to get graded on our writing skills not the amount of hand muscles we have, ok class doesn't explain stuff well but you can get guess and pray for the best!
