easy only if you study the guide she gives on webct...book doesn't make sense
Do not take this class
If you study, you will do fine. The other ratings reflect students who have failed to take Dr. Haun seriously. I have also been in two other classes of her's and I really like her.
So hard, so unclear, you're not even taught material. Every test is short answer, fill in the blank still. Good luck actually getting some help if you can get past her TA's. AHH!!!!!!!!!
Her classes are available on tape and I think she prefers to teach that way. If you have a regular class with her -DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS. The tests are easy, the study guides she gives out are "highly correlated" to the tests.
This prof. is horrible,if u take her by tape she is boring, dry humored & she LOVES to talk about herself. It is very unclear what will be on the tests & they are all fill in the blank, short answer, essay & draw the figures she talked about.DO NOT TAKE HER!!
class is not hard on tape. you don't even have to watch them if you want. the book is short and explains every theory. very easy class.
i am a junior and this is the first time i have ever had to drop a class. she is very rude!her TA's are even worse. if you take this class and have any other classes to study for you will hate life.
This was without a doubt the worst class I have ever taken. I still have several classes to take in communications, but I will be sure to stay away from her. The TA was terrible too. No help with anything. Grading was atrocious & subjective. beware!
honestly i have to say i got a D in the class but if i had studied the notes and her guide then i would have passed. the tests are not that easy since much of is it write in but if you memorize the study guide word for word then you will pass
Took over summer.Expected an interesting/easy freshman class but turned out to be very difficult & boring.Uses PowerPoint slides Test-50 questions fill in the blank. Flash cards are a must! Course requires lengthy paper
very boring. just check webct for review answers and use old tests from friends if possible!
I totally recommend video class. The whole class she reads from the powerpoint presentations that she supplies on line. You almost don't even have to watch the tapes just go over the test reviews and refer back to the slides. She's really not that bad.
Unfair & tricky when it comes to exams & exam reviews! She'll also make you feel stupid for asking a question!
took haun on video..don't waste ur time watching the tapes..just spend ur time memorizing the book like the back of ur hand!!dont take the class unless ur in dire need of it, that is u are a comm major..spare urself the agony..4 real!!
I thought is was a great class; I got an A-, and here is how: DON'T buy the tapes, too boring and a waste of time. DO study all the review sheets until completely memorized, backwards and fowards. . BEWARE of grammar & punc. on the paper!
The class was pretty interesting, her lectures are word for word out of the book. Do the reviews they are pretty much like the test. Overall the tests are pretty easy if you study. There is a paper. it looks hard but its super easy. I enjoyed the class, not too bad.

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!!!
It is not a fun class, although you learn some things.Ms. Haun is very stoic and mechanical in her teaching approach, and her DVD is very much what is written in the textbook. Study the textbook, old test & reviews for the tests, be very meticulous on the paper assg., and you will get an A like me.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS... WELL DONT TAKE HER!!! CRAZY LADY MAKES UP WORDS AND THINKS SHE KNOWS EVERYTHINNG. TAPES ARE BORING TO x10... YOU'RE LUCKY IF YOU MAKE PASS THE FIRST ONE! SHE WANTS YOU TO REMEMBER EVERYTHING WORD FOR WORD-- LITERALLY-- NO JOKE CRAZY LADY
Not a very hard class, just have to be disciplined enough to actually read and memorize the material. I just studied the study sheet to the T and skimmed over other information and got me an A.
Buy the textbook, which is really an outline of a big textbook, and memorize it.I did.I got an A.I found her funny and charming.Like most 1000 level courses, the course is intended to be an introduction to terminology. You memorize terms that are useful in later courses.Distance people can sit in easy
Very indifferent person. If you have another choice please don't take her go for another prof. Her exams - fill in the blanks (the whole paper) like there are no other more effective methods. Not recommended.
Flat out refuses to help students...laughs at their questions. Once I asked a question and she told me responding to it would be a waste of time. Tenure is a bad, bad thing. Just don't let her discourage you...she'll try to!
I took Intro to Comm on tape. Haun is more like a kindergarten teacher gone awry than a real college professor. I made an A in the class by NOT watching the tapes and studying the night before an exam. If you have to take this class, do it on tape. This class made me want to change my major - to something else.
No actualy teaching going on in here. All she does is read the book to you. HER book of course. Not very willing to do anything outside whatever power point slide she is on.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! change majors do whatever...dont take her class! tests are super hard, unless of course you can memorize the ENTIRE book. then you wont do too bad

I took her for two classes and didn't think she was all that bad. I found her very helpful and nice, sure, she goes off on a lot of tangents and tells a lot of stories, but her review is exactly the same as the tests and if you participate and show up to class, you'll do fine. if you can read and study, you can pass this class.
Intro to Comm Theory. Teacher is very boring after a while. Not very understanding of student situations.
She is that kind of professor who is not very hard, but you don't feel like you learn anything in her class.
She messed up my grade on one of my exams and the other students in my class. Her TAs DO NOT know how to grade so keep track of your grades! There are 3 exams, the first one is ALL SHORT ANSWER ESSAYS and the last 2 are all FILL IN THE BLANK. Know her book word for word, back to back, otherwise she'll count it WRONG.
It's a weed-out class, so you better study. Her first test is basically memorization. Either you know it or you don't. Yes, her graders do grade the test but if you have question she is more than willing to look over your test and change your grade right then and there. I took this class twice, failing the first time and then making a B.
Guys beware if you think you are taking this class and expect it to be an easy class. Yes, it is easy if you are willing to give up on your other classes and your life outside of class. I am in the middle of the semester and second time taking this class. Don't waste your time watching the videos. Get index cards and write out all the definitions a
She gives test reviews, BUT the tests are worded very differently than test reviews, or taped lectures, or text book. So differently, you'll think you're reading questions you never covered in any of your studying.
Horrible teacher. It can only be taken online, but you don't really learn anything. Took her in the fall semester of 2005 and the first test wasn't postponed even after everyone was still returning from the Rita evacuation. It only showed real misunderstanding of the students situation. I would recommend people take it elsewhere if possible.
This class is the second intro comm. class and is almost impossible to pass. The test are ridiculous. They are ONLY fill in the blank and definition. You have to write a paper that has more points against you than for you and the TA's grade them very unrealistically. Dont ever take this if you can. It is a tape only class. Beware!
Second time taking it. her tests are hard, eventhough is mainly memorization. the paper is not that bad, but the test are!! good luck!
I wish I had known something about her before signing up. If I would have known about the way she gave her tests I would not have taken this class with her. The videos didn't help me at all. The best thing to do is just read the book and memorize EVERYTHING cause you never know what she will ask.
It actually does help if you watch the videos and follow along with the lecture slides she provides BUT... she also is known to make mistakes when she grades the exams, so check your graded exams carefully. This is especially true on the paper.
Sarcastic, rude. Makes a lasting memory.
tests are hard, paper's not easy also
I've taken a LOT of classes in my time (160+ hours) and I can say with confidence that this is the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. High on herself, the major project for the semester requires you to cite her work ONLY a minimum of 50 times. Her "book" is pitiful with lots of errors and typos. She does not teach, and distributes grades as deci
I took the hybrid version of this class. If you sign up for this, watch the videos. D'uh. It's VERY easy to get an A if you go to class, and watch the videos (hence the hybrid part). The paper is pretty tough, so start on it ASAP...
Her reviews for test 1 & 3 are exactly like the actual test. If you meet with her to discuss your paper abd you can actually defend it, she'll bump up the grade. Seriously, it was not a hard class.
she is a very hard professor... and you wont pass unless u memorize about 40 pages word from word
Do yourself a fevor and run away as far as you can! NOW!!
I found Dr. Haun to be exceptionally helpful and understanding of students' situations. I took her 3 times at University of St. Thomas for various courses. Good person - you'll get an A if you do the work she asks of you.
Dr. Haun's class is a very difficult one. I have taken this class twice and struck out both times. This class requires allot of momorization. Her student aids are vicious graders. Don't exspect any kinda of help or extra credit to move you along to the next level.
I'm not a COMM major, but this class filled my writing intensive requirement and I figured it would be an easy, blow off class... it wasn't! Read the book VERY carefully, memorize the study guides (very helpful), the videos weren't necessary for me (hybrid class). I ended up with a B+ in the class so it really wasn't too bad. Just study a lot.
Great great teacher. Loved her. She was so clear and helpful and made me change my major to communications.
Prof. gave conflicting information re: paper requirements. She also gave a study guide for the test. The day before the test she told us if we used the study guide then we would get a "D".
I don't know which teacher 1/27/07 took, but don't believe it. Very obscure course - many studied hard and many failed exams. My gosh I am glad that class is over; I worked very hard and almost failed - many GPAs went down.
i got an "c" in this class and only took her once. this is definitely a hard class
She expectes students to have perfect grammar on papers, however, we had to use her book that was loaded with errors. The only way to pass her tests is by rote learning of the textbook (i.e. - memorization of her book). Her exams are poorly written and test the lowest level of cognitive learning. If you can memorize her textbook you'll pass.
Dr. Haun is, hands-down, the worst professor I've had during my time at UH. She is rude to students, her book is riddled with errors and she sets arbitrary (and confusing) guidelines for the class. And yet many students have no choice but to take her — too bad for them.
This is a mandatory class for anyone doing anything with communications so just take it. She was not that bad. I took her over the summer, all her of her tests are the same each year, talk to a past student. I made a B and never watched a video or read a book.
I naturally have always been good at it comm, but Haun focuses on if you can retain all the information she wants you to retain for the tests, not if you know it b/c you actually understand it. Has so many "technical" problems w/ syllabus, book, etc. but just blames it on others and gives no remorse. MANY ppl retake class! VERY unprofessional!
The test are easy to pass as long as you study the reviews and read the textbook as best as you can. Her book is very sloppy and full of mistakes. The only problem with the course is the Application Paper. Its sole purpose is to fail students. Grammar alone is what will kill your grade. Start on your paper early and have it proofread!
Horrible!!! Mono-tone boring old online lectures you can pay attention to watch...goes of on tangents a lot. The test are all fill in the blank 100Q's with NO workbank. You practically have to memorize the review and then some! Wouldn't recommend.
I was scared to take this class but now I'm not. Haun is great. She always answers my emails. Her book pages are messed up but she gives you reviews and if you study them you get A's. You do have to memorize 30 pages worth of stuff but some theories are just easy. The paper, I got a B and it was hard for me but I hate writing. Take Haun!
This class is hard, but it's manageable. I suggest you READ her book and study her reviews. The key to this class is to MEMORIZE EVERYTHING! There are three exams and one paper. I got an A in her class because I did what I just mentioned. She's a very nice person. I suggest you meet with her so she can get to know you, that can be very beneficial.
Very straightforward just read book and study book, if you ask for help you will receive it, she responds to emails in a timely manner
By far, the WORST professor I've ever had, granted it's an online class. Her tests are fill-in-the-blank (what is this, 5th grade?), and she uses a textbook written by her that isn't edited properly. She curves on exams occasionally, but it boils down to memorization as well as studying beyond the study guide. Stay clear of this class.00
The textbook has too many errors and there's too much info that needs your attention. She is without a doubt, one terrible professor. Lackluster powerpoint presentations that are IN THE TEXTBOOK (towards the back). And fill-in-the-blank exams...come on! Seriously, avoid this class or take it elsewhere, NOT WORTH IT.
Possibly the worst teacher ever. Unappraoachable, rude and defensive, she refuses to give extra credit or make up exams
So... if you have a photographic memory I would suggest this class. The book is out of order and in need of some editing but it is not unbearable. I never watched the lectures for fear that I would fall asleep. The tests are no joke... Basically you have to memorize everything perfectly to make an A.
Telling the truth, this class is not that hard as long as you study the book and follow the questions from the review. you will pass this class if you study.
These are the most mind numbing lectures ever. Impossible for me to pay attention to or stay awake for. Trying to just read the book (by her), which seriously needs some editing. Tests are AWFUL: all short answer/fill in the blank. No word bank, just have to memorize EVERYTHING. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to avoid this professor
This is the most awful teacher I've had by far. She is unapproachable, rude, and her class is ridiculous. You would be able to get a good grade if this was the only class you were taking and spent all your time memorizing that wretched piece of scrap that she calls a book (which was written by her) Stay away!!!
The tests are essay. KNOW YOUR review and you should do well. I wish someone would have told me that!!! No need to watch the videos, just answer the review questions!
Okay yall shes REALLY hard, the test are FILL IN THE BLANK- Get a study partner! However she curves every test so you'll be fine! STUDY
Know your review sheet...the test is identical to it. Make sure you start your research paper WAY in advance, b/c it creeps up on you. She was VERY helpful to me.
laughable! unfair! subjective. not very clear and concise on expectations and instructions in class, definitely rude. assignments do not reflect reviews or test. very much into trickery.. many students in the past has had problems and it's a shame she's tenured.
Dr. Haun was very helpful. The test are off of her lecture. I sailed through this class. Interesting class.
Took the summer online course. Lectures are very long and you need to pay attention to them. You must buy her textbook and memorize all the theories and concepts in it. Essay paper takes a while to do. 3 tests and one paper. Read ahead and spend lots of time studying. I did ok in her class. I think it is difficult to make an A though!
The syllabus had so many mistakes, & Dr.Haun was out the entire session due to health issues, so the course was unclear and very difficult to navigate. There are 3-tests which were not bad & a paper. You will need the book, reviews and videos to survive this course. Also a very good memorization skills. good luck
This class was unclear, especially for being a comm class. The lectures are very long, she rambles on about nothing, and nothing is ever in order. This class is passable, you just need enough time to watch hour and half long videos that are out of order and read her textbook. She seems nice though.
Do the review sheet and study her book in and out. You must memorize he book practically. Tests were ok but a little tricky. 3 Tests and one essay. Not an easy class though! Lectures are long ranging from 1 1/2 hrs-2hrs. If you spend a lot of time studying for this class, you should do ok. I didn't make an A though and I studied at least 6hrs.
Not an easy class by any means. You must memorize her book and study the lectures, powerpoints, and review sheet in order to get a C or above in the class. Study Study Study. You will spend a lot of time with this class. And, you have a 5-6 page application paper to write. Good luck! I am glad this class is over
Run!!! from this class and teacher.
You must memorize lectures, her book, and the review in order to make a B! Extremely time consuming class and on top of that, you have essays to write! Tests are fill-in the blank. Spend 8-10 hours studying for the test and maybe you will get a C in the class. Maybe...
These people aren't kidding. This woman makes me wonder just how hard it is to get a PHd. You may as well memorize her book, because her lectures are literally useless. She is inconsistent, annoying and doesn't know what she's talking about.
Don't be afraid of this class. Ok, so you need to STUDY and READ the book and REVIEW powerpoints. The tests are a breeze if you put forth the effort. I've made 97's on all of them. The tests were multiple choice (the first test she gave a 10 pt. curve!) She's not that bad. You have to study, absorb the info, and recognize it on the test.
Extremely hard class. You must devote a lot of time studying for this class. You MUST memorize her book in and out in order to do well on tests. Lectures are long, some go over 1hr 30 minutes and on top of that, you have to study her powerpoints. Spend 10-12 hrs a week on this class and you should pull of a C
This is not a blow off class. Read everyone elses ratings and you will understand. I wouldn't be super afraid of this class but you must read the book, watch online lectures, and do the review. If you do not read the entire book you will fail--gaurenteed! This is not a course you want to repeat. You also have a paper to write. Good luck!
Haun's class is a bore. I took it online, and it was so difficult to watch her lecture videos. I could no concentrate. But it's easy to find a study a group through blackboard. ALWAYS do the reviews, and study them. Her tests are usually 50 multiple choice questions, and can be very tricky. You have to write a ten page paper, so be prepared.
Very vague and hard to keep up with.
Disrespectful unless you kiss up. Specifies minimum lengths for grades rather than content. Videos out of order and "didn't have time to deal with it". Put in a formal complaint. 80s videos made largely of discussion and even SOCK PUPPET role play, I mean really?! 4 grades, the easiest worth only 10%, the others worth 30%. AVOID.
this is a very unorganized class her book is not a realiable source.
Although very knowledgeable in this area, Haun's course is very unorganized & confusing. The syllabus does not correlate to the online lectures, or to the web ct schedules at all. The reviews for the exams are not up 2 date, and do not even contain what is actually on the exam. This is a introductory class that is graded as a masters writing class
Must watch lectures. Some are long and last nearly 2hrs! Super boring. You must memorize her book, do the review, watch lectures, and make flash card notes in order to pull of a C. Read everyone else's review on her class. You need to spend at least 10hrs on weekend studying. Spend about 15-20 hrs studying before tests. Even then you may fail.
Until she updates the syllabus and all resources available, this is not a teacher that I would recommend for anyone. Lectures are misnumbered from the syllabus, the index in her book is misnumbered from the pages info is found on.
Just read all the reviews about this professor. There is nothing new to really tell you about. I am so glad this class is over. Super hard tests! Boring lectures. You have a paper to write which is graded hard. Spent nearly a week studying for her tests and got a C on them. Lectures are out of order. You have to figure the stuff out yourself.
the worst prof ever! do not recommend it at ALL! everyone i know had to drop it the first time. does not give extra credit opportunities. videos are extra boring. and takes for ever to reply. dont take it! save yourself. and her book has so many mistakes
All essays except for the1st r graded extremely hard. I only rec. this class to a grad student. 15pg research paper majority of class got D's.final is ALL short answer.Take home final is very TIME CONSUMING!!Teacher was not helpful at all.Asked multiple questions abt assign.& she responded "you should knw this already" Don't take her !!
In order to get above a D in this class, you must watch every single 1 1/2hr lecture and be sure to watch each one 5-6 times. Read her book and rewrite word for word. Then memorize her book. Finally study the powerpoint slides, do the review, and spend a good 20-25hrs/week studying for this class. Maybe you can make a D- at best!
A lot of people complain about this class, but I took it and got an A+. Basically you need her book and the online lectures. Watch the lectures. Take notes. Read the book. Religiously. You have to study hard to get a good grade, but it isn't difficult. Just study.. Know the book well. Haun is pretty nice and very helpful.
The lectures are from the 80s and don't mesh with current times. There's only a midterm, project and final. The final is take home, but she grades on length and not content. She suggested 7 questions return approximately 9000 words.
Everything is outdated; the video lectures are 10 years old, the syllabus isn't accurate, and exam reviews are actually dated "Spring 2004". It's like she stopped trying 5-10 years ago. Her TA's do everything. Her exams are multiple choice and very tricky. I wouldn't recommend this instructor. She's nice, but the course overall is pretty bad.
must watch all lectures and memorize her book. i don't know anyone who has received an A in this class so best of luck to you. tests are tricky and you must memorize her book word for word! best of luck and put a lot of time into this class. the lectures are super old and boring too!
Ok so I took this SP '10 and yes I hated it but i did get out with a B. It's possible and I did NOT watch those horrible lectures. I got very acquainted with the book and I did all the reviews for the test. Get with study groups and go over the review. Thats what I did. Good Luck. Only buy her book that other was a waste of money.
This is not an easy class - it is intended to "weed out" the less-serious students who think Communications is an easy degree. If you study hard and watch the lectures, you can do very well. I took this in the summer, along with another class, and still made an A.
okay, seriously guys...this class is really not as bad as people make it out to be. i took it during the summer. all you need to do is MAKE SURE TO READ THE BOOK && THOROUGHLY MEMORIZE THE REVIEW. you will do more than fine. i thought that the paper was fairly easy also.JUST READ HER BOOK. (it's not that long)
Dr. Haun is over 70 & been at UH for 40 years. She has taught this class for decades. All you have to do is read the book, word for word, & study the review sheet. You don't need the videos or anything. She is very nice as a person, but the class is so standardized it never changes. There is only one 10-pg paper. Read the book!!! I got a B.
take her ONLINE during the SUMMER. I could not sit through this womans class EVER. However, taking her online was fine. Watch the videos, take notes along with the book and shes really not that bad. I got a B and all i did was study for 9 hrs before the day of the test. thats 9 hrs of videos, but for the rest of the class i did nothing. not bad.
just read all the reviews on the professor. It's not worth my time explaining. Good luck if you take this class!! run!!!!!
Horrible, mean angry lady not very helpful. Exams are completely different from reveiws. Just stay away I could cry right now lady is so mean
This is the way that the class works: You have 3 tests and 1 paper, all valued at 25% each. The paper is very easy. It takes some time, but not much effort to write. The tests however, are very difficult. They are blatantly tricky and require hours of memorization, not comprehension--just straight memorization. I would not recommend this class.
She is extremely dry and the material is not that interesting. Tests are hard, tricky questions - read the chapters yourself, do the review yourself, make flash cards, and memorize them! The first test is the hardest, study your ass off for it or it will haunt you! DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE LECTURES, they suck and aren't helpful!
This class is not "fun." I took it online and watched 10 year old lectures that were not engaging or interesting in the slightest. If you memorize the book, and obsess over these lectures, you can score yourself an A!! Do not expect curves or any feedback from the teacher. Just know the syllabus back and forth!
This class is tough. But I feel like anyone can still pass it. Just read the textbook, watch the videos, read the powerpoints. Here's a tip make your own notes for each theory and topic discussed and do it early. It helps you understand and remember the material. Haun is very mean but don't let that discourage you
If you pay attention and actually learn the material, this class can be very interesting. It was much harder than I expected, but it is possible to make an A. It helped me to watch her lectures and make notecards for EVERYTHING in her slides. You REALLY have to study A LOT for this class because the tests are tough.
Not a good class, not a good teacher. Take this class elsewhere if possible, trust me you never want to be have to take a class from haun. She can be rude, unhelpful, and senile. word of advice, just dont ever take a class taught by Haun!
Can be very rude and legalistic. Doesn't offer help much. 1 major project, 1 test, and a paper. Class doesn't teach you much and despite giving you the review and directions first day of class, its hard to understand what she wants out of the project and paper. Not a good teacher and not a nice person. I refuse to take any more classes with her.
This is hands down the most poorly organized course I've ever taken. Professor couldn't be bothered help -- passes everything off to the TAs. She knows that her lectures don't match the chapters in the books, but is unwilling to correct them -- hasn't changed a thing since 2004 (seriously). What a waste of time and money.
MEMORIZE the textbook and make flashcards of all concepts and theories! This class is awful but you can do it if you put forth the effort.
Worst teacher ever. Not only does she have lectures that are old but her book has typos that she did. you pretty much need to rewrite the book for yourself in order to understand everything. Make flashcards, notes, anything that you think will help because its a pretty difficult class. dont take if dont need to.
I really do not suggest taking this class online. Professor Haun doesn't explain anything! She doesn't tell you why you do bad on an essay but she'll grade you very harshly. The lectures online are extremely boring. I'm surprised I made a B in this class, but I worked really hard for it. If you can, take another professor!
SHE IS AWEFUL. her exams are hard, her textbook that she wrote has so many mistakes. she never responds to emails she is rude. you only have 1 paper and 3 exams no final no extra credit not thing good luck passing. Her exams are like riddles, shes not helpful at all. DONT TAKE IT WITH HER. DONT take it online!
The class really isn't that hard it is just very time consuming and has a lot of information to obtain. However, she is clear in teaching the information. Plus the old videos are kind of comical. hehe.
Dr. Haun is a very kind older woman. Her syllabus spells out exactly what is expected of you. Buy her own textbook and FILL OUT all of the Exam Reviews and you will pass without a problem. If you watch the videos, do the reviews, and read her book - then the class is not that difficult. You have to put in the time. Period. Enjoyed it online!
The class was actually not that bad. I took the online class. Dr. Haun curve our first test and also our final class grade. She was actually very kind to us, it's just more time consuming compare to the other class. You have to spend a little more time to study and prepare for this class in order to get a good grade.
Listen, THIS CLASS IS EASY. All you have to do is memorize the review and read the chapters a few times. Easy peasy.
COMM 1302 online was very easy. Four grades: three exams & an application paper. Model your app paper according to her example at the back of her book and make sure you use proper grammar, APA form, & punctuation plus fill in/memorize the reviews. For those who name call - consider them immature for college.
She is not helpful and I wonder if she should be teaching at all anymore. If she doesn't consider your email to be legit, she won't reply. The class is poorly organized. If you can avoid her, please do.
This class was insane. No way it should be considered a freshman course. The material is extremely boring, and while her youtube videos aren't necessary, they're equally boring. The tests are worded in a way that makes them extremely hard, even if you've memorized your study guide. Avoid her at all costs.
Class is hard, but but the material is interesting if you actually understand it. Just memorize the book, and/ or join a study group. It helps. I passed but I'd still recommend that you should find another professor.
Although I had to take this class twice i do say i didnt pass the first time because i didnt study. I thought it would be easy cause it was a lower level class but it was not. On the other hand, she does give curves on tests & final grade. Just READ & DO THE REVIEW. U should pass. Also i say u should pay to have ur paper reviewed, i did & got a 96
Must read and memorize all textbook. Literally, all text book. Exam reviews provided will get you at least a 60. Type in google Haun comm 1302 and find the answers in flashcard form to the reviews. Must read! 3 exams, all multiple choise, one 10p paper. Get it proof read by a professional. Slight curve at end of year, made 77 total= B-
I'm an English Major, senior year. My paper I submitted 4 her class was edited by 13 junior english majors twice, my professor 2x, I edited it 8x, family/friends edited. It was read by 5 graduate professors & I was the only student in my class that year to be accepted into the Creative Writing major b/c of that piece, I made an 85 on my paper...
... the graders are extremely hard graders. Most people I know made in the 50's, 30's a few lucky ones in the 70's/80's. Get your paper edited by the Writing Center. Or by the paper graders, you can pay them (should be illegal) to edit your paper before they grade it. Ask Haun, she is the one who will suggest doing it. Ask Haun during exam 1.
Don't don't buy the bad hype and don't panic, this class really isn't that bad. Even if the book might not always be clear, the lectures flesh it out. Not to mention she gives you review sheets which cover the tests pretty thoroughly if you approach them with caare, and all of the answers are in the book. Keep your head up, and form study groups.
Poorly organized, horribly put together. Disjunctive jumble of nonsense. Paper is graded beyond any reasonable parameters. Graduate papers are graded less harshly. Textbook is full of errors. Poor class you will take nothing away from it but a waste of time and energy. Haun is the worst professor I have ever seen
hard!
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE CLASS!No matter how hard you study, read, or learn the material you will probably fail the test because she sets you up to fail. Yes she gives you a review and tells you what chapters the test will be over, but for some reason you still come up short on the tests. Also the paper is graded ridiculously hard
Terrible class. VERY disappointing. Writing element to this class was extremely difficult and useless. Tests were mc but review is muttled and non-helpful. Do NOT take this class under any circumstances!
DO NOT TAKE!! Poor grading practice. Tests poorly match material covered and review. Paper ridiculous-terrible grading. More points taken off for grammatical errors (-5/each) and missing page numbers (-5)then for missing concepts that had to be included (-3/each), which was main point of the paper-applying communication concepts -_- makes no sense!
She has low communication with the students and her graders are HARSH on the paper assignment. They deduct too many points for simple grammar/formatting errors. Many students had complaints about that. Get your paper revised by a peer or pro before submitting because she wont consider revisions or extra credit.
THIS PROFESSOR IS RIDICULOUS! THE BOOK REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS WAS WRITTEN BY HER. THE GRAMMAR IS BAD, THE SPELLINGS ARE WRONG. SHE BARELY COMMUNICATES AND IF SHE DOES SHE ACTS LIKE YOUR DISTURBING HER. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR ONLINE CLASSES EXCLUSIVE SHE IS NOT THE CLASS TO TAKE. SHE HAS ONE DAY SET FOR TESTING AND SHE WILL NOT OBLIGE. NO FLEXIBILITY!
This is a terrible introduction class. It's very difficult unless you only have this one class and have the time to memorize the entire textbook.... Her class material is very outdated. The paper is a joke because of how hard it is. Do not recommend it.
Lecture videos need to be updated and the paper requirements are ridiculous. I highly recommenced not taking this class, my worst experience with an online class by far.
No, Haun is not a great teacher, but the class was easy. I didn't watch the lectures; just read the book. The book might be unclear and full of grammatical errors, but it's short and gets the point across. Again, I ONLY read the book and made 80's on all my tests. The essay is easy if you look at the examples and read the directions.
This has been one of the worst classes of my life. I have never failed before until now... it's all memorization and a lot of it. Slow to e-mail back, and the lecture videos are outdated and LONG. Not a recommended summer course.
So she only has 3 test & a paper. I took her hybrid class last semester and got a C...My first test without studying or reading my chapters I got an F, go figure. The 2nd/3rd I read the book & did the review & got a B.. THE PAPER, DO NOT WAIT LAST MIN, It is due on the same day as the 2nd test. If you are looking for a challenge take her.
I took her a semester and she was very tough. The exams were contradicting to the reviews. Her powerpoints were OLD and out of date. The questions on the exams barely supported the Powerpoints. Her TA'S were the utmost insensitive about peoples grades. Never take again.
This class is difficult, but you CAN make an A. Treat tests like they are fill in the blank (memorization is key). I failed 1st one bc of this, but I made an A on the 2nd one. I wrote my paper without fully understanding concepts and I made a 95. You must be an exceptional writer (she takes off for errors). Don't watch lectures. Memorize textbook.
The tests in this class are frickin har! I had 45 min to complete a 50 question test. Not enough time, too many options on the test. Videos online are old and outdated. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
I would not take her..I took it online, The lectures are sooo old and boring. It makes the class uninteresting. Test are hard and so many options. She made us do 2 papers and 3 exams. You have to memorize a lot of material.
RUN AS FAR, AND AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!! SHE'S HORRIBLE. CAN'T TEACH, LECTURES ARE NO HELP, AND SHE IGNORES HER STUDENTS! I got an A but only because I WORKED MY BUTT OFF AND TAUGHT MYSELF!!! STUDY GROUPS FOR THIS CLASS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!! If you can avoid this class...DO!
I am not one to write bad reviews of professors and even when I read these I was like come on it can't be that bad! I was wrong about Haun. My best advice is DO NOT TAKE HER. No help whatsoever, does not respond to emails, and whenever she does she is extremely rude. Her TAs grade SO UNFAIRLY. STAY AWAY. So so rude, waste of time and money.
The tests are easy b/c all you have to do is read the textbook and memorize it. But, she requires 2 essays that she does not grade. Her TA uses an automatic grading software and will not edit any mark it gives you(I lost credit for writing peoplesoft on my cover page)My class compared emails from the TA and she was almost always rude and offensive.
I got a B+ in the class. We had 3 Exams and 2 papers. The papers are EASY. I got As on BOTH. Just look at the examp papers and go off of that(I wrote about the zombie apocalypse). The first test is hard, she gave us a 10pt curve though. The second is easy, 3rd moderate. Used the book only and passed. Tests mult choice for online class. Good luck.
This is a horrible class by a horrible professor. She is extremely rude when you email her and the papers are very harshly graded. I got 7 points off because I didn't use commas where they thought I should, not because they were needed.
OMG! This is by far the worst teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE!! do yourself a favor... She is terrible at presenting. Her online "modules" are monotone, she goes off topic constantly, she is eating and coughing all through each of them. SHE WROTE THE BOOK! It's written idiotically, trying SO hard to sound intellectual that she sounds ridiculous.
Everyone hates on Professor Haun, but I met with her in office hours and she was so nice and willing to help and I ended up with a good grade despite the horrible grade on my first test. Just work hard and show that your "interested" in her class and you'll be fine.
I read other people's comments about the class and was a bit nervous. But honestly, the class is not difficult. The essays are easy because there are examples you can use in the book. The tests are a bit more challenging. I got an F on all of the classes but I managed to get a B- in the course. Lectures don't help much. stick with the book.
terrible. This is an online course consisting of 3 exams and 2 essays. The book is very poorly written and scattered, and the exams themselves are heavily centered around memorizing everything in the book. so your only hope in actually understanding the material is attending the reviews and making study groups. avoid this prof if at all possible
I made an A in this class. I took it online. I read the book and did not look at the lectures. The professor wrote the book. It is very confusing. The concepts are not clearly defined at all. I really didn't learn anything. This class is pure memorization. The positives of this class is the book costs $50.00 and is thin. She responds to emails
I made an A. Haun wrote her own book and it is very confusing. The concepts are not clearly defined. This class is pure memorization. I only read the book. I did not watch the lectures. The pros are the book is thin, Haun responds to email timely, and its not too much work. I suggest that you read (memorize) 4 pages a day.
Hard Class! Try your best to do what she says! I would find another teacher!
Oh god do not take her. Her video lectures are boring, her test are structured in a way where you have to memorize the book verbatim. I never fail an exam but I did in this course. The book is thin, but filled with grammatical and spelling errors. Just, no, don't take her.
I was really disappointed in this professor's performance for her study guides for the tests. Her tests consisted of about one-third of the information portrayed in the study guide. The study guide was not a true representation of the materials that were tested. This teaching approach was very misleading.
Dr. Haun is not helpful at all. She gets very defensive when you email her with any concerns. Her Exams were so complicated!. Her Syllabus says one thing but it means another. I never got feedback on my papers just a grade with no explanation. We had to buy the book that she wrote and never used our official book. Very disappointed!
Professor Haun will make you EARN your grade, this is not handed to you. She is helpful if you seek for the help.
She'll Answer your questions, but will still be unclear about what she wants. Her syllabus says one thing and then she'll tell you that you're wrong for following it, even though it says "Instructions on this syllabus take priority over information in other places". Her outlines for the class do not match what she has online. It's an online class.
I can't believe what I got myself into. She has no sense of structure during lecture. Haun has no computer or powerpoint to present in class thats parallel with the material online. She comes in wearing her mumu dress and expects to ramble about whatever when she should be the one teaching. She is USELESS, AVOID HER! WORSE. PROFESSOR. IN. MY. LIFE.
Everything you need to pass her class is provided, you just have to READ the info provided. The grade won't be handed to you, you are expected to study for the (3) tests and there are 2 papers to write (FYI dont right like dis an' u shuld b fine). Don't expect to sit down the day before something and then pass it, you have to study.
This is actually the most useless class I have ever taken. The textbook is filled to the brim with grammaticalspelling errors, but she (her graders) will take off upwards of 15 points on the papers JUST for grammar. She was rude, condescending, and incredibly unhelpful. I would not have taken this class with this professor if I hadn't had to.
Dr. Haun is a nice person overall, but she is inconsistent with her syllabus, powerpoints, and tests. If you want something to be clarified, you have to email her. Tests (3) are not that bad, but the papers (2) are graded really picky by her TA's. If you can find someone else to take, do it. If not, the class isn't impossible.
Okay everyone... Here is the low down on this online class. At first I was scared as hell to take it because of the neg feedback... HERE IS THE KEY TO THIS CLASS. IF YOU STUDY YOU WILL PASS THE COURSE. Classes are not intended to be easy. I was scared at first like I said. Don't let fear stop you...I passed all my exams with an A.. :) Good Luck
This is an easy class if you read her book and do the study guide given for the exams. There is no reason you should not get an A, unless you do no do what I just said. There are 2 papers and 3 exams. The papers are long and the criterion is very specific. Follow directions and everything will go smoothly. I got an A on every assignment.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Seriously like don't do it. She writes her own book and it's completely impossible to understand. Even if you study everyday for a month, you will STILL do poorly on the tests because they DO NOT MAKE SENSE!!!
I took this class online and I have never experienced so much confusion. You have to buy her book and try and teach yourself all the gibberish she has included on the pages. There are only three test but they are nothing like her study guides or lectures. There are two novels I mean papers that are graded poorly by her TA's. DON'T DO IT
Her exams require you to practically memorize the chapter. She gives you a review for each exam, but it would be way easier to just go ahead and memorize the chapters. The book is riddled with punctuation and spelling errors. You have 2 papers and 3 exams all semester. I just read the book, I never watched her boring lectures.
Whatever you do, do not take her!
Tough Professor. Test are taken on campus. Her book is essential to passing! Basically you have to memorize the book. 2 papers you have to write. Probably passed because of my essays.
I got a C+in the class. I never watched lectures, I read (and did the reviews), I wrote the papers and got my sister to fix the grammar. I got a 40 on the first test (a curve was given), 70 on the second, 56 on the third. The papers are what saved me. She was nice when I talked to her. Not a easy breezy class, but not many other teachers offered.
Out of all the online classes, I have never been more confused in my life. Has a ton of extra links and sign-ups you have to do in order to do work for the course. I.E. Wikispace, Wikigroup, study group etc... And their is no clarity on just how it all works. You're in groups the entire course. Dropped in first week. DO NOT TAKE HER!
My experience with this professor was interesting. If you email her professionally, she'll work with you. If you're rude, then she'll be rude back. So just be nice. Other than that, if you have great memorization skills & a great grammatical writer, this is the course for you. If not, don't even bother. I failed this course horribly. Good luck!
do not take her class at any cost i infact was told by a UH comm staff to take the comm 1302 comm theory at UH-D and pass it easy . she writes the book so she forces you to buy her book so she makes more money . she was very rude to many in my class because they asked what to expect in her test and she said "anything i want ".
I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The papers were pretty straightforward and a piece of cake. You have to read the book and study little by little in order to understand the concepts. Not that hard people. The test questions come straight from the book. Just memorize.
I can not stress enough to not take this class. You pay all this money for some youtube clips of some 1990's Public Access looking set up. All she does is read off of powerpoints. Take literally anything else. If you do have to take this, BUY THE BOOK.
When I went into this class I KNEW what I was getting myself into & I can surely vouch for the negativity Martha Haun gets. Her book is self-written; full of errors, bad examples, & confusing concepts. The syllabus is also contradictory. You definitely have to work for a high grade - it's not impossible. Know that book by heart & you should be okay
Professor Haun's Communication Theory class is extremely difficult. There are three exams and two essays, each one is 20%. This would be a piece of cake if it had been more straight forward. Professor Haun offered little to no further explanation than her syllabus when it came to reviewing or writing said essays. I would not take again.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. She is conceited and the class revolves around her textbook. She has lectures online and some powe rpoints but it is useless. She does not offer any in person meetings and ended this semester by sending a rude email saying her thesis comes before our grades and that is why our grading is still not done.
You have to buy her book. She writes it herself. And it's completely incoherent. The tests come straight out of the book. No time for students or clarification. Makes her TA's do all the work. Don't expect grades to be on time. Just avoid her and her useless online lectures from 2002, syllabus from Spring 2004 and review from Summer 2009.
Save yourself! Do not take this class. The tests are very hard - lots of a,b,c - a+b, or all of the above nonsense. The text book is written by the teacher and is more of an outline than a textbook. The lectures are incredibly boring and the grading on the papers is silly. There is a curve but I just squeaked by.
Firstly, she's not as bad as I went into the course initially expecting. Her tests aren't easy but I think the issue that students have is that they actually end up having to study for the first time in their lives & they don't like that. I bombed my papers but did well on the tests. She even gave a curve to us. You gotta study, bottom line.
The syllabus she gives is ass awful, and in no way coincides with what you need to review. The power points, audio lectures, and video lectures in no way add up. This class is great in theory, but this teacher doesn't do the field much good. I advise you go for Lee for COMM1302, if you want a competent instructor.
Most of everyone I knew who took the class did horrible on the first exam. I did pretty well on the 2nd and 3rd exam though. You literally just have to read the chapters for that unit thoroughly. There will be a lot of terms and theories you have to remember but it's straight from the book, which she wrote.. Essays were relatively easy.
I honestly went in thinking this was going to be awful because of her rating. It really wasn't that bad. You just have to have good memorization skills and be able to write a paper.
She does NOT give good feedback, she does NOT care about her students, she is DEFINITELY NOT respected by her students, and she is very self-absorbed. Everyone who takes her class ends up in a wheelchair. She is not very pleasant. I have -mailed her very kindly and courteously and her responses were just so bitter and cold. Just don't take this her
Her (she wrote her own) textbook is a joke! It doesn't matter if you have to put off this class for years just to get a better teacher, just don't take her! She gives out instructions like a baboon. She will screw you over and not even feel bad about it. Good luck!
She is a tough grader but her papers are pretty open on the topic and really depends on whether you used her theories. Her book is a bit confusing but all of her exams are off of it so it it mandatory that you buy and read! She was really nice when emailing with me; a lot of students have issues w her but it depends on how you approach her.
Worst absolute class ever. If you have to take it be ready to watch video lectures made in the 18th century. This is suppose to be a freshman class? I've taken classes for Juniors and Seniors that were easier then this class. You must study very hard to pass this class that you won't ever use in your life.
Essays have the probably the most unclear directions I've ever had to deal with. The guidelines vs. the syllabus instructions contradict and so do her examples. Tests are straight forward, but you have to memorize everything in order to pass.
Before I start I am not one of those people who is giving Professor Haun a bad review because I failed. I got a B. But DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She gives three tests with no reviews or idea of how the test will be. She also makes you buy the book that she wrote herself. Lol
This is the first online class where I actually felt lost. The instructor maybe posted/emailed twice during the entire semester. No weekly update, or discussion board-- in this class you feel alone :-( Do not watch old lecture videos. READ and MEMORIZE. I made a 56, 78, and 39 on the 3 exams, a 94 and 97 on the major papers. Passed with C+
I read the reviews before the semester and was terrified. I didn't do so hot on the first test (76 with the curve), but I chalked it up to learning how she tests and adjusted accordingly. If you want to be coddled, won't happen here. If you understand how college prepares you to adapt and act accordingly then you'll do fine. She has lots of EC!!!
Course consisted of 5 grades... 3 test and 2 papers. One short paper (3-4 pages) and one long paper (6-7 pages). Papers were graded pretty easy, I made a 97% (short paper) and 89% (long paper) surprisingly. 99% of test material comes from powerpoint slides/book and a few questions here and there strictly from the online lectures. Boring class...
Comm Major. I took Relational Comm w/ Dr. Haun and it was an experience. Almost no structure or content in the class. Just a large discussion most of the time with a midterm, presentation and paper thrown in. Good luck.
I loved her! There isn't great reviews on here for her but I just wrapped up her summer course and it was a fairly easy class. Attendance not mandatory, grades all exams on a TEN point curve!. I will say you must buy her book as she wrote her own. Isn't costly and unlike most textbooks the info in there are only what you will be tested on.
She has no clear guidelines on anything, which made this class tough. Your only grades are 3 essays, and the classes revolve around classmates' personal stories. So basically, you sit there and listen how people feel about death etc for 1.5 hours. There were interesting stories, but the way she grades is kind of random.
