Doesn't put grades on papers and tests, just makes comments!!!
Uses captive audience to spout liberal ideology.
Urges people to look beyond themselves into the real depth of social issues in America. Extremely liberal, and therefore accepting of all views.
good teacher. wish i had her.
Although Dr. Brazy's reading assignments can be challenging, they make you question your own ideals, morals, judgements, etc....I think this is what makes her effective as a professor...she doesn't shove her own beliefs down your throat, she's awesome!!!
Excellent teacher - the best I've ever had. All professors should be this good. Cares about the class, encourages discussion, makes us think!
Best prof and class I've ever had. Why can't they all be this good? Smart and passionate about teacher. I would recommend Professor Brazy to any student that wants to think and be challenged.
Dr. Brazy is an amazing teacher that forces you to look at history in a completely different way! Beyond that, she is a great advisor and will always make time for you. She is a rarity among puplic university professors and South is lucky to have her!
great teacher and mentor
Didn't agree with a word that came out of her mouth but she makes you think! Makes you look at history in a new way...but be warned, shes very opinionated!

This is by far the best history professor. Her class makes you think about the social issues in America. The books you read in this class is very interesting and is like no other boring history book. NO tests. Only essays. Has very interesting discussions
Dr. Brazy enabled me to appreciate history and to understand the differences between different economic and social classes. She encourages students to see different points of view through primary sources. A Great and Helpful Teacher!!
She is very, very hard and does not like Greeks!!! So do not wear your letters to class!!!
brazy is crazy
African American History 279. No tests for the semister, but a few papers. Extremely liberal views toward all areas of the subject matter. Spent more time on her political views than subject at hand. Discussion formate of the class was very effective.
She is out of her mind. I dropped the class after learning that my grade depended on random essays and the "quality" of my comments in participation. I would not recommend her to anybody!!!
Discussion based class encourages students to THINK. Class discussions were very interesting. Writing assignments were structured to make sure you were "getting" the material. She makes the WHY of history become important.
This best history class and teacher I have ever had. Very interesting and you will never get bored. Highly recommended.
Had to drop the class because I wore my greek letters to class and that was te end of my chance in the class
Good teacher, but can you have to talk alot or you will fail the class. Can play favorites but keeps the class interesting.
I wouldn't recommend taking her b/c she is a very hard teacher and expects alot out of you.
i thought brazy was crazy too but she is the only history teacher who taught the real history and if you do research you will find that what she says is not crazy at all.
Wonderful person, great professor, very inspiring. Be prepared to use your brain and think outside the box. Don't think you'll get through her course without doing any work--it won't happen. :-)
amazing professor!! challenges you to question. she pisses you off, but it's a good thing! by making you angry, she makes you think. she encourages you to find your own thoughts, not just those of the media and, contrary to popular belief, not those of

Extreme liberal slant. She claims to challenge you to think, but isn't happy if you don't think the same as she does. She asked for my opinion, then replied, "I'm shocked and horrified that people can think that way." If you're a leftist, easy-A. Rightwing should avoid, unless willing to lie for a decent grade. Little actual course content.
Great teacher and great class if you are willing to be open minded and are not extremely set in your political views. Don't come to this class expecting an easy "A" but if you are a hard worker this is definitely an easy A and is very rewarding course in the end!
If you like radical liberals this is the class for you. If you are a Conservative and like to defend you stance this class is also for you. I called her a Communist at one point and she didn't get offended! However, I feared she'd fail me! She cusses in class like a sailor. She's a great teacher!
I really enjoyed her class. She held group discussion most of the time and we just debated about our thoughts and opinions. I didn't really go to class, but when I did I took good notes so I was straight when it came time to write papers. I would recommend her to anyone who is interested in the "other side" of history.
Great teacher! Very easy to understand. You must be open-minded and not easily offended. Just make sure you go to class because your participation can kick your ass!

She is a great professor. Very helpful. Learned a lot and she kept our interest. Enjoyed the discussions in class (who-ha) Papers only, no tests.
extremely detailed and focused. she captures all movements and makes you understand how things were and why events took place. i really loved this teacher, she made me change my minor
great teacher. very opioinated.. lets everyone state their opinion.
Crazy 'bout Brazy !!
She is very helpful and believes class participation. Make sure you say something of value and DON'T ramble about nothing. She is very knowledgable about her material. If you pay attention you will pass her class with ease.
she was horrible! I don't know anyone who like her class! If you state your opinion and it doesn't agree with her's, she will belittle you and make you feel stupid!
She KNOWS her stuff.
Brazy is a very interesting teacher...I liked her & the class....I was very happy with my final grade...
spare me. I will never take her again. She is smug and holier-than thou. She doesn't grade fairly, complains if you don't talk "enough" in class and I learned absolutely NOTHING in her class. She's one of those teachers that does the "sit in the circle" thing, and lets the class talk and talk. I hate it when teachers expect students to run a class.
Wouldn't you like to participate in class and get an easy grade for it? The essay tests are easy enough if you study well and remember to PROVIDE EXAMPLES! No weekly quizzes to study for, no real tests, just read the assignment and talk! She may be a biased liberal, but she'll still listen and discuss things with you. That's part of your grade.
She is a great professor, in fact she makes history interesting. She is open to any views as long as they can be substantiated or supported. I have had two classes with her so far, and look forward to many more.
horrible liberal bia dropped her class
covered material well
Dr. Brazy offers students a place to explore and openly share their ideas without feeling threatened or belittled.
Very liberal..personally I think she's crazy. But you can't beat the no tests or quizzes philosophy. Show up for class, talk, and write a few essays.
She has her ideas set and dares your objection.
This class is good if you are of the leftist persuasion. Nothing is done from the book and all that is talked about in class is how great it will be when Bush isn't President anymore. If you are into that then go for it.
Despite being a little rough around the edges MJ does a very good job and is easy to get along with provided students make an attempt.
You HAVE to participate (counts for 50% of your grade!). She is extremely liberal and opinionated. While she encourages you to voice your opinion, it won't sway where she stands on the issue. Very thorough in her explanations during discussions! I liked her!
Closed-minded liberal. Since 50% of your grade is from discussion, and if you are any bit of a rightist, in order to get an A in the class, be prepared to face argumentative debates on a day-to-day basis.
Her lectures were interesting and I did okay on the essays, but if you're not a fan of actively participating in class, like me, I would recommend any of the other history instructors that are just as good or better.
Knows her material but not the best to learn from.
She doesn't really teach--she wastes the first 25-30 minutes of every class ranting about whatever ticked her off that morning and then for the remaining 20-25 minutes of class time tries to teach a little American History (and then wonders why people don't show up for class).
This woman is out to use the university as her own personal platform. I sat through the very first day and dropped her immediately. She wants to argue with students. I'm all about discussion, NOT in the mood for argumentative teaching. She's doing nothing for the humanities group at South.
Mrs. Brazy may be a little misunderstood in her ways of teaching. However, I am a conservative Republican and absolutely love her class. She takes time with students who show an intrest in the material. Im Expecting either a high B or low A for final grade. Give her a chance and enter the class with an open mind. Not at all "EVIL" !
Although she does make history slightly interesting, it gets boring when I come to class EVERYDAY and she speaks of Racism and Slavery. She doesn't seem to really speak about HISTORY as much as she just discusses themes that affect the world of TODAY. She should cover the course material more. She has an uncanny resemblence to an older Tina Fey.
I had to force myself to come to her class on some days. She seemed pretty boring and sketchy to me, & I wasn't too fond of class discussions and essays determining my total grade. If you're into that kind of thing, take Brazy. If not, take someone else.
She will tell you at the beginning of the semester that she is CRAZY..she is.All she really ever talks about is slavery, racism, and discrimination, and social movements. Be sure you go to class because she does notice whether your there or not. You WILL NOT pass if you dont go to class. And you better speak out in class and in discussion.
Easy if you are willing to keep an open mind and come to class. Will teach history from a different angle than any other teacher you will have. Kinda crazy sometimes but makes the class easy. The only way to fail is pure laziness
she is a really good teacher, you just have to keep a open mind! i learned soo much in her class and if i had to chance i would take another one of her classes.
she's different, but if you aren't scared to do the reading and participate, you will get a lot out of taking one of her classes.
Professor Brazy is extremely knowledge and she's hot, which makes going to class enjoyable.
CRAZY. I really mean it. One of the worst teachers that I have ever had. If you have a different opion other than her, good luck with making a good grade.
If you are liberal or african-american, you will like her. If you are white or any bit conservative, don't take her. She will make you feel guilty for being white. She lectures almost exclusivly about slavery and racism against african-amerians and completely forgets about other minorities. More of African-American studies than History.
Unlike two of the other commenters here, I did not find Professor Brazy intimidating or threatening. She was EXTREMELY knowledgeable about her subject and opened my mind to multiple viewpoints on American history--not just major events but how history gets made and understood. Her course has and will continue to inform all my other classes at USA.
A little off her rocker, but level headed all in the same. Very easy if you do not mind working. Course grading is divided 50% participation 50% written work. Also gives it to you straight forward. Highly recommend her :)
Dr. Brazy is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Her classes require a lot of writing but it gives you an opportunity to show her what you know. I'll admit, hearing her viewpoints over and over do get very very old, but you just have to deal with it. I would take her again, and I hope to!
Dr. Brazy, at first, was the teacher I dreaded seeing. Her viewpoints are radical and about 98% of the time I disagreed with them. However, she has blown me away. She's truly magical. At the end of the semester, her viewpoints started to make sense. I would take her again just to learn more of her points. Plus, she can be quite funny.
She is a feminist socialist whack job and because she is intelligent she uses her class time to sway the minds of weak impressionable students to her insane outlook on life. 25% of class time is used for the actual material and the rest is her preaching her distorted view on pretty much any topic that comes up.
First off I wanted to say she's a very intelligent woman. Although you may have a hard time listening to her comments if you are a conservative republican like me, she is pretty cool. The class is very unconventional which seems to lead to a successful learning experience. Overall, "crazy brazy" fits the phrase but a good professor.
She's very liberal and be prepare to accept it. Remember to address her as Dr.Brazy. Just a question, how do you answer a question for your final paper if some of the questions were grammatically incorrect. yeahand no one said anything even the teaching assistant.
I like her, but not the way she does class. If you do not do good with reading a textbook everyday and listening to lecture and doing an inclass essay off of your reading and her lectures do not take her. Also you have to be able to talk aloud good. You have a discussion class with her, which you get a grade for.
She's funny and you don't see very much of her. You see the teacher assistants much more and do discussion with them, which is 50% of your grade. There's not many choices for HY 136, so you might as well pick her.
The nickname "Crazy Brazy" fits, but she's not terrible. Although, be sure to address her correctly. She counted off 5 points on one of my papers because I called her "Mrs. Brazy", to which she replied "Why do you assume I'm married?!" You spend most of the time with a TA, so be prepared to participate in discussion since it's 50% of your grade.
Her lectures are not worth a sitting. Meeting her criteria is sometimes hard if you're not a history person. The participation points are added up so weird. Discussions are really great, but you have to talk in order to get full credit.
Somewhat very liberal. Very bias grader. If you don't agree with her ideas of history don't expect an A or B. Participation is 50% of your grade and the other half is 3 papers. I will not be taking her again
She is a strong liberal and feminist. Nothing wrong with that, but if you do not agree with her views and if you are a conservative, republican, christian, don't expect to pass. Class lectures were about anything but history. Horrible. She tried to tell me to change my major because I was not smart enough, I have a Bachelors in Finance now.
Dr. Brazy is an inspiration! This class would have been a lot more enjoyable if the redneck idiots in the back would have just shut the hell up and let the woman speak!!
She is a very harsh grader when it comes to papers and papers are 50% of your grade. The other 50% of class is participation points from group discussion, you may or may not get a chance to talk since everyone is trying to get a word in. Brazy, is absent from all discussion sessions unless she is your leader, Leaving your points in a TA's hands.
Did not enjoy this class at all. Her lectures were boring and there's a lot of reading.
I do not recommend taking this class. It is definitely one of the hardest classes and professors I have ever taken. Essays are outrageously hard to understand and she is a tough grader. If you do not like history or not very good at it, do not take her as a professor. Discussion is 50% of your grade so therefore everyone tries to say something.
Dr. Brazy does not teach history objectively, rather, she gives us her interpretation of history. Not to say that this doesn't make for interesting lectures, but she definitely only appeals to a select crowd and definitely not the majority of people in lower Alabama.
One of the easiest classes i have ever taken. I missed most of the lectures and finished with a B. As long as you are a pretty good writer it's a breeze. If you are taking a history to actually learn history then i would recommend taking someone else though.
I have never really liked history until Dr. Brazy's class. Her lectures are really informative and interesting! However, she does lecture up until the last minute of the class. Exams are essays, and there are 3-4. Exams are 50% of your grade and discussion is 50%. Be sure to read! Also, take part in discussion! Overall, easy class if you work hard.
I would not recommend this class. Dr. Brazy has a very strong opinion on some issues and will make sure you hear about them in every lecture. "History" is only taught for about 10 minutes- and it is very hard to follow. Couldn't take a lot out of the class. The textbook is also very poor (lots of reading but not interesting).
She is a very communicative professor , very rare way of grade since im use to tests for knowledge , but i rather have a discussion , she is very open minded and sweet on my opinion and she likes facts which is nice , she has her own opinion but she would respect yours. She is quite cute actually i think i would take her out lol
She is a history guru so if you're into history, she's your professor! I, however, am not. Lectures were a blur to me, you have to take notes but only on key points in the lectures which you have to determine for yourself. The only grades you have are papers and a discussion section on Fridays, so you better learn to speak up or you will fail!
First of all I stopped coming to this class after about the first 4 weeks. Brazy pushes her liberal agenda more than she teaches history. As long as you participate in Friday discussion you will be fine. However she and her graduate assistants are very tough graders of the 3 papers you will have to write.
She a nice lady and I think that she means well, but if your taking American history because you like learning about what makes America the great nation it is today; then turn around because all she lectures about is how bad we are for ww1, industrialism, and so forth. Also she does not stay on topic at all during lecture.
She really cares about her students. The class isn't for everyone, and she's upfront about it. It's easy: write 3 papers, follow instructions, go to discussions and always have pre-written responses to the 6 or so questions. Do all that, you'll probably get an A. She's definitely super liberal, probably angers a lot of conservatives but oh well.
Professor Brazy is CRAY CRAY but IN A GOOD WAY! IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION, ASK IT! She is the MOST RESPONSIVE and CARING professor I have EVER HAD! She is a very passionate instructor. Participation is necessary to pass! Keep in mind that she does a TON of response papers that could help you later! SHE'S AWESOME! I PROMISE!
It is very important to write your papers effectively and I without a doubt suggest that if you are struggling with writing the papers to go to the writing center or ask the TAs or professor Brazy herself for help. Also, make sure to participate in the group discussions. They are a huge part of your grade.
Dr. Brazy is one of the most genuine professors ever. She is so sweet, and her classes are very interesting. There are no traditional lectures, the class is based on discussion. There are no exams, and 3 papers. She is a lenient grader, just make sure to participate and you will be fine.
