Sharp teacher - do your homework and you'll be fine. I hate acctg but left with a vague understanding of it and knew I didn't want to major in it.
&3320. I love Mrs. Merritt to death she will help you if you just ask (and not the day before finals!) She is awesome but very detailed
She's pretty tough teacher but stay on top of the homework and you can do OK. Her tests are way to long for the amount of time given- if you have a class after hers you'll definitely be late!
She really doesn't teach. We've been here almost 1/2 the semester, and I'm sure she's missed at least the amount of days her students are allowed to. I haven't learned anything, yet. Read the book if you want to do well. Pray when it's test day.
I think that she is awesome! She will give you all the help in the world if you just ask her! I have learned more about accting from her than any other teacher I've had
The worst teacher I have ever had! She misses a lot of classes and ,when there, wastes time talking about her career( a hundered years ago) in public accounting. Can't anyone else teach the intermediate series? Don't take Merritt if you can help it!!
Mrs. Merritt is not a good teacher. She does not actually teach. Her tests are way too long and she doesn't clarify the material enough for you to be able to do well on the tests. I would not take her if you don't have to. She's never there and when she is you won't get anything out of class!!
Wonderful teacher - very bubbly and fun. Explains things well, answers questions, tries to help you get an idea of real world accounting and the future. She misses class some but CPE is something we all must face as accts in the future - get over it. One neg - very slow to return assignments.
The worst professor I have ever had in college! She wastes class time and does a very poor job of explaining the material. I went by her office three times and she was rude and always had an excuse for having to rush in helping me. I got a B in the class but no thanks to her!! Avoid Merritt!
Definitely a good teacher. Anyone who doesn't think so probably isn't willing to put forth the effort to succeed and wants teachers to spoon feed them.
Very good teacher. She explains the material very well and was always helpful. She even gave us a list of tutors in case we couldn't see her during office hours. Spent time reviewing for the test. Take her if you get the chance but just be sure to do your homework.
She is a great teacher. All I had to do was listen in class, she explains everything we needed to know, and do a little studying on the side. I don't understand how anyone could say that she doesn't explain things in class and how they didn't get anything out of class... they must have slept durin
Her teaching style and personality are great. She was very helpful, realistic, and funny. She made learning the material easy.
A poor teacher!! She misses a lot of classes which makes it hard to learn the material. She also wastes a lot of time in class talking about herself and her career in accounting which was about 40 years ago. Who cares? Friends say I should have taken DeBerry. I believe they were right!!
She is a Very good teacher. She makes learning enjoyable.
Unless you are one of her "pets" you will not do well. She wastes time in class talking about nothing and then gives really hard exams. If you go to her office for help you will find she is not very helpful.
Great teacher! In order to make good grades...guess what...you have to study!!!
The worst professor in the world. Always finds excuse for herself. she is not very friendly.
A terrible teacher. Does not explain very well.As the previous person said, she always has an excuse. If you are a male, flirt, she loves it and it will pay off. AVOID Merritt at all cost!!
She can't teach. Like others have said, she has teacher's pets and if you aren't one of them she won't give you the time of day. Don't even bother going up to her office because you won't find any help there. I think she should either be a CPA or a teacher because doing both together is taking away from class time and hurting the students!!
She is a great teacher, ready to help you any time with more than jsut accounting

I don't know why all of these entries rip Merritt as a bad teacher. She is a great prof! I have gone to her office a few times for help and she has been VERY helpful with the accounting material. And she really is a nice person. So, if you are reading this site for some info on profs, ignore all the stuff written about Merritt. All of it is bunk.
I was really excited about accounting until I took this class. She wastes time and is not helpful. I feel that just putting the answers on the board is not very helpful. Being in this class actually makes me not want to be an accounting major because I will have to take her every semester. Don't take this class is you can help it!!
good teacher however, alot of work.
One word: yuck
a terrible teacher. Do not take Merritt. Does not explain material well at all.
I agree with others, she is a terrible teacher! Avoid if at all possible!
I think Mrs. Merritt is one of the best professors at the school and a phenominal lady. She is very sharp and tries to keep students motivated about the accounting profession (not an easy thing to do). Her classes get pretty difficult but she works real hard to help students. If you're an accounting major, take Merritt,if you not take someone else.
Mrs Merritt is a very good teacher and she is very helpful. She really knows what she's talking about. However she can be difficult and expects you to learn and understand everything, so if you're not an accounting major you might want to take someone else. It's not an easy A.
A terrible teacher. Avoid at all cost!!
You will do well in her class if you are one of her favors. Otherwise watch out. She wastes class time talking about herself and she misses a lot of classes. A poor teacher.
She is a great teacher and is VERY willing to help. She moves fast but has a great schedule and sticks to it, so it's easy to plan for tests. Work hard and keep up with homework and you'll understand. She is very easy to contact for help. I didn't make a great grade, but I feel like I learned a lot.
Just finished my accounting degree and this is by far the best professor in the department. Shes very helpful and genuinely cares about the students, but the subject matter is not easy. Good luck
Merritt is full of herself. She is very arrogant and has her favorite students. If you are not one of her favorites watch out!! Poff is a much better accounting professor.
I think Ms. Merritt is an AMAZING teacher, I made an A in her class, and now I'm an acct. major. Gives assignments for homework, but doesn't take them up. Gives you every chance to learn. Has tests and quizzes, so even if you fail something, it doesn't affect your grade TOO much. I slept through my FINAL, and she let me take it at another time.
Mrs. Merritt is not easy, but she is a great teacher. I had her for 5 classes, and I learned a ton from her. The subjects that she covers are difficult, so you have to study very hard. If you are planning on majoring in Accounting and/or taking the CPA exam, I would highly recommend her. Her classes helped me prepare for taking the CPA exam.
This class totally sucked. She expected us to do stuff on the exams she never explained in class. I left with little new knowledge after taking this class. What I did leave with, however, was a profound dislike for this prof. Don't take her unless you absolutely have to.
Having to keep the comments clean doesn't allow many descriptive words for her ability, personality, or knowledge. DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN FOR ANYTHING. Avoid her classes if you can. She is full of "busy work assignments". Why can't SOMEONE (anyone!) besides Merritt teach these classes?????
She just wants to talk about herself all the time! Spends a lot of time talking about her past and who she knows. Who made this woman important? A VERY poor teacher. Does a terrible job of explaining material!!
Mrs. Merritt's class is difficult, but I learned from her. she was willing to spend extra time working with you individually, and if she knows you care and are trying, she will do all she can for you. It does help to be on her good side. The only thing I was bummed about was that with all of my extra effort, she didn't round up my grade.
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is very helpful and explains everything throughly. While the class is not easy, she gives you every possible resource to use to make a good grade.
She is difficult, but I never cared for accounting. Study for the tests, come to class, show you care, brown-nosing helps. I made a C.
Very repetitive to the point of nearly obnoxious, is knowledgeable in her subject matter only struggles with inferiority complex since is the only one without a PHD in dept.
All I can say is DO YOUR HOMEWORK over and over again and read the EQE. That is basically what her tests will be like. Nice Christian lady and is very helpful if you ask for her help!!!
If you're a math type person you will probably like this class (I did). It is important to read the book and get help asap when you don't understand something in the early chapters. Mrs. Merritt is really nice and a good teacher. She explains information from a real life perspective. You need to read the book though as questions come from there too.
very right about the teacher's pet thing....could not agree with it more...i would take Poff over her any day...
Mrs. Merritt is the BEST Accounting professor at NGCSU! period! You definitely cannot be lazy in her classes. So if you do the work, study the problems over and over, you will do fine!
Attended this class during the first half of summer semester so the pace was quick. A lot of material was taught during this short time. Mrs. Merritt has an excellent understanding of material being taught and is very gifted in sharing this knowledge with others. Highly recommend this professor to others planning to take this class.
She knows her Accounting, and she loves to teach her students what it takes to be sucessful in the real world. The University needs to lighten the extraneous workload, so she can dedicate more time to her students, on top ofher duties with the GSCPA Education Committee. I strongly recommend Ms. Mrritt!
TERRIBLE TEACHER! starts every class yelling: "Alright its______" and whatever day it is. She rushes through the chapters, her tests are either horribly long or horribly hard. She does not answer e-mails and misses the accounting learning center lessons that she is supposed to teach. DO NOT TAKE HER or you will fail!
I had Mrs. Merritt for 3310, 3320, and 4310. She is GREAT!! She knows just how to teach the material so it comes together for students. You have to do the homework and study for her tests. If you do that - you will get an A!
Wonderful teacher! She knows her material and does a great job conveying information to students, even if you knew nothing about accounting before this class. She is always willing to help and super nice. Just do the homework and pay attention. Definitely recommend.
By far, the worst teacher I've taken. She doesn't teach the subject, so I read the chapters before every test, but the tests were still nothing like the material. She did not give back graded tests very fast, so there were several times when we took a test before we knew what we made on the test before that one! Take someone else if you can!!!!!!!!
I LOVE Ms. Merritt! By far the best professor I have ever had. She's very energetic about what she teaches, she interacts with her students, and she knows how to teach the material in a way that is easy to retain! Definitely recommend her!!!
This class was hard. Mrs. Merrit is a good professor, although her tests are a lot harder than they need to be. Her tests consist of multiple choice and 1 or 2 big chapter problems to do. The only way to do well is to do the homework by yourself... at least twice for each chapter. That will prepare you. Also read the chapters to get the multiple.
Honestly not surprised that she has bad ratings because her class is very hard. She is very detailed and requires a lot of work outside of class. Do NOT miss a single class. You WILL fall behind. But coming from an acct major, she is the best teacher I've ever taken. She knows her stuff,is kind, & I feel very prepared going into advanced classes.
Good teacher for the most part. The tests are excessively hard though.
Very tough teacher. Definitely knows her stuff. Study and practice plenty outside of class, especially paying attention to homework and quiz problems. Her tests are very tough and account for 80% of your overall grade. Do not skip or you will fall behind. Study PLENTY outside class, especially in Maymester.
Very tough class, but good professor. Practice a lot out side of class, do not use check work on homework. Definitely one of the better accounting professors, but just a difficult class (for a non-accounting major).
She's an amazing professor that works extremely hard to help her students. She's always willing to answer questions and go above and beyond to help you understand. She's a rarity when it comes to professors. Her tests are hard, and if you miss a class, you will fall behind, but she is incredibly knowledgeable about her subject. Awesome professor!
She is an easy professor. I made a high B during a maymester should have made an A but I slacked off the last week. Just show up to class and she gives you most of the homework answers in class. Great professor. Highly recommended.
She makes long tests for Acct 3310, but if you are properly prepared, they're not too bad. Biggest thing is time management. 3/4 of the class got burned the 1st test b/c she made the test waaay longer than necessary. She does not curve the tests, and will often give quizzes over assigned HW. Def. cares about her students and their long term success
She is a wonderful professor. If you respect her, she will respect you. Pay attention during class, read the chapters, and do your assignments and an A is not difficult to get. She offers extra credit through Beta Alpha Psi, which I highly recommend. She is also very organized with her teaching, and willing to answer stupid questions.
You really need to go to class and keep up with reading and homework. She cares about her students and will do her best to help you understand the material. Definitely recommend doing the GoAccounting extra credit. She is a notoriously slow grader and will try and shove BAP down your throats every class. Overall a nice lady and excellent professor.
Not that bad! She is very knowledgeable on the subject of accounting. She will help you with anything you need if you approach her for help. The class is sort of difficult, but it is manageable to make a B or an A if you work hard. Lots of Cengage assignments, but they help tremendously with learning the material and preparing you for tests.
Excellent in terms of her knowledge of the subject matter and preparation for future accounting courses. The only problem I had with her was that she would be sarcastic if I had a legitimate question about something after class. Professors should be in this profession because they care about there students not to make them feel worthless
Professor Merritt is great once you get used to her style. She does a great job of presenting a clear, logical process of understanding Accounting and is heavily involved in seeing the students succeed.
Do not take in maymester!! Iv'e taken calc 3 and this semester has been even harder... good luck.
I took her this semester and I barely got a C. She is a hard professor and I started doing well near the end because you have to study a week before her exams (which are super tedious). The best way to prepare for her tests are to do the brief exercises, quiz problems, and read like crazy. She cares a lot about her students.
I got a B in her class but I honestly think it's bc I worked more than I studied. So study really hard and read the book for her class. Her tests are really hard so if you don't go to class you'll be lost. She's a good professor but also a hard professor. Get ready for a lot of homework, quizzes and reading.
Apply yourself and youll be fine, slack off and you WONT pass
Although she is a good teacher, her compassion for students that she tells you about on the first day is completely false. She is rude when you try to ask questions and isn't helpful when she does provide answers. If you do go to her office hours, she makes you feel dumb. I am very good at accounting but I am struggling to do well in this class.
Midterm was 55 multiple choice Q's with some math & 4 LONG journals (15+ transactions each) . I understood the material VERY WELL. 1st time in my life I ran out of time for a test. Her regular tests are 2hrs, 34 Q's and usually 2 Journals(reasonable). I did the math, she allotted 1 min per item (midterm expectations were not realistic/reasonable).
Test expectations were unrealistic; she did not give us enough time to finish our tests. She even made a D2L post trying to back up her claims, but it is plain common sense. Pretty much no student was able to finish her Midterm. Take another professor and avoid this one, seriously.
Just avoid her at all costs, this has been the most miserable semester of my life because of her. I dread every day waking up because of her. I'm not even kidding. Not sure about her physical class, but she is useless online.
Do not take Professor Merritt's class online. In fact, don't take any accounting class online. The void of lectures and learning this material on your own is a constant uphill battle. This professor in specific does not make it any easier, as she gives a LOT of homework and little feedback. AVOID.
Lots of homework, can't stress enough. I have 4 classes but it takes me 4 days to complete anything in here. She assigns a quiz which requires you to fill out at least a sheet worth of answers and then homework applications (34 long questions) all due within a week. AVOID. Bad at giving useful feedback. Smart lady but bad teacher. VERY BAD.
TERRIBLE. Do not take! Her test are so long that it is hard to finish in that time frame. To sum it up if she was the the only professor left to register I still wouldn't take her, that's how bad her class was. Save the money and find another teacher!!!
Do not take unless you truly can spend 2+ hours daily. Test are hard, and you do not have enough time to finish. Class is much harder than it should be.
Prepare to have no life or time for other classes outside of hers. Homework takes 4 hours, only give 2hrs for tests and gives long problems at the end. Do not take this class with the professor. Doesnt help with questions says to look at the examples from the book. If you take her, dont be surprised at your grades after studying for 25 hrs weekly
She is the worse teacher ever. DO NOT take her!! She is awful, she makes you take the midterm and final in person on a Saturday. She does not help you understand the material. She does not answer questions until the very end of class, so if you are confused about something at the beginning of class then you are screwed. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
Do not take this course with Martha Merritt. Her grading ratio between homework, tests, and exams is (0.9:3:150), essentially your midterm and final weigh 50x more than your weekly tests. With that being said unless you ace the in-person (on a Saturday) exam then you are out of luck. There is no recovery from a bad grade on these exams.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. Be sure to have access to some form of amphetamine if you do plan on taking her online class. She speaks at a rate of half a syllable per second. She does, however, have the ability to make something so easy to understand, difficult to understand. If you miss more than 3 classes, she will drop you without notifying you. GLHF.
I don't even know where to begin. I'm a lifelong straight A student, and I'm failing her class. The midterm and final exam (which you take in person on a Saturday morning, and are paper pencil despite the entire class being structured online) are both worth 30% of your grade EACH. Tests are hard. Hours of homework. Not enough time on exams. AVOID.
PLEASE READ!! The class itself is not that difficult. The grading is. The midterm and final are 60% of your grade!! You will spend around 5 hours A WEEK ON HOMEWORK that worth 4% of your grade. Each TEST is 4% of your grade and has 10 questions, so miss one and you're done. It's just not worth it for the grade. You cannot make an A in this class.
The absolute most horrible professor that I have had so far. If you can avoid her DO SO! If you do well on all homework, tests and quizzes, but bomb the mid term and final YOU WILL FAIL. She was no help at all. Mid term and Final were very very hard. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
Unethical & worst professors to ever teach an aspiring student. It's not that her class was hard. It needs to be hard, people need to respect & work hard to earn their degrees. She lies about what's on the test & how it's graded. She grades you based on how much you suck up to her. There is no standard & she will not let you keep the test to verify
