freshmen biology compass was an easy A+. just go to all the classes, type up a response after each class, and write a paper at the end of the term. easy easy...AND it counts towards your requirements for biology majors. :)
dr. powell is so enthusiastic about biology that she makes even fungi interesting. one of the nicest professors at the university, and always willing to help. she loves class discussion and gives multiple choice tests with no major curveballs (a rarity in this department!) take her if possible.
She is the hardest teacher I've ever had in my life. I study after every lecture and then about 3 or 4 hours a few nights before the test and I have yet to make above a D. She does not explain things well at all. If you have time, find another bio teacher
She gives pop quizes randomly at the end of class. So you may want to go to class. If you answer the objectives you should be fine for tests.

AWFUL!! although Dr. Powell is super nice she would make better use of her time working in a research lab she doesnt need to be a teacher. Just because someone can play a game well doesn't mean that they know how to coach it. I dont mean to sound conceited but I am better darn good at bio and I was forced to drop her class for fear of getting an F
she can not teach at all, her class is ridiculous..i have never failed a class but am likely to do so this semester if i could do it over i would never have taken her

She was not a good teacher at all. I love Biology that's why I have it for a major, but she really makes me hate it. Because she is really unclear in her teaching.
She taught off of powerpoints and when time was running out, she rushed through them. She wasn't very good at teaching Principles of Biology.
Get out now! She is awful. She is so hard! She pulls test questions out of the air. Her powerpoints highlight the key concepts and dont go in depth and then she test you on the stuff that is not in the powerpoint. If you want to have a life and still have good grades drop this class!
Dr. Powell's class is very challenging. The secret to her tests is using the provided website or CD that comes with the text book (Biology 7th ed. Campbell and Reece). I used the website becuase my used book didn't come with the CD. I pulled out an A in her class because of the WEBSITE. i would have been in serious trouble without the WEBSITE.
Hard and Boring. Fact after Fact after Fact that wasn't explained clearly.
She is extremely boring, rambling on about topics without really explaining them. Taking her class at 8 in the morning will just put you back to sleep. Her 'clever' ways to remember facts, are pointless and don't help. She is a sweet lady, but just not made for teaching.
Get out. This teacher is nice and loves biology, but making a good grade is almost impossible. She posts everything she teaches online but rarely does it help, also she tests over random material. I have gone to every review session, every class and studied constantly for this class, but yet making a good grade was almost impossible.
Great teacher who is very interested in the material but the class is very hard. I've read every chapter, been to every review, and missed only 1 class and I'm struggling to keep a B-. She tests over completely random material. Get a different professor
Challenging professor but she is encouraging and cares about how you learn and what you learn. Weekly reviews and chapter outlines are helpful. You have to study for this teacher.
She is a nice teacher, but she is so boring. She put me to sleep almost every class,so do not take her at 8 in the morning. Martha makes her tests impossible, and half the class dropped after the 2nd test. No one has a really high grade, and she tests over completely random material that is not even covered in the book or her stupid powerpoints.
ESCAPE NOW!!!
Martha Powell is a wonderful teacher. She loves Biology and wants everyone to do well. As for all the people who complained about her principles of Bio class, as as senior I can tell you it only gets harder...if you're struggling through Principles you should critique your study habits before the professor because Martha gets an A+ from me!
So... Her class is not that bad, but I had a hard time taking her seriously. She made the comment one day that it only took 4 letters of DNA to make up a human, but it takes 27 letters for the alphabet. The alphabet only has 26. I was like WOW! Her class isnt impossible and the labs are really easy!
RUN NOW!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!! SHE IS OLD AND CLUELESS!!!!
I took this class as Bio 108 and I thought that it was a pretty easy course to get through. Her first two test are the hardest but the second two are not hard at all. The last section is probably the most boring, overall this course is not hard as long as you go to class and study for her test.
I had to study for this teacher but she helped me with her review sheets and answering my questions. Felt like she wanted me to do well and like biology
This lady is a strange one. Lectures are very boring! The tests are really hard....they are multiple choice with all answers correct, you just have to pick the one that is most correct. I know i studied my butt off for these tests and did not do as well as i would have liked.
Ok so this class is not that hard. Anyone who says otherwise needs to drop biology as their major and not do pre-health anyone. Classes are going to get even harder. She really enjoys what she does and gets excited about it. She is hilarious and is 10x better than Grover Ward.
She was a really great teacher. some lectures were boring but you learned alot. she loves when you ask questions!
Powell is so awesome!!!. She makes jokes in her classes and tests straight from the powerpoints. Just read them and take notes and you will make an easy A while learning a lot of cool stuff. She is really nice and approachable. A quarter of her grade is activities which are easy and interesting. Take Powell if you have to do Biology 2.
This was a great class! The test are very easy if you read and studied the powerpoints. I never read the book and made a 98 or above on every test. She is very helpful and I would take her again.
I couldn't have asked for an easier and more helpful professor. I studied for every test like the day before, and made high grades on all of them. Her classes are never boring since she's always making jokes. Tests are very simple...straight from the notes. She sometimes gives quizzes in class, and some are worth extra credit. GREAT TEACHER!
I love Dr. Powell! She gets so excited about biology. Some of her tests are tricky though, make sure you pay attention to the details of the powerpoints.
Very boring in the classroom. Even with a large class, she failed to engage the students.
She is not very interesting. She gives bonus points randomly for coming to class. I didn't buy the book, she even tells you she makes the test from her note but her test got harder towards the end. Overall an easy grade but not that interesting.
Just a bad class, its a non-major course but its taught like a major class. She does offer bonus points for coming to class and projects but this ust helped keep my grade decent since i never could do well on the tests since she seemed to get her questions from nowhere even though i read the book, the notes, and the website
I liked this class a lot. I don't know how people can say she was not engaging- in a lecture class a teacher can only be as engaging as you allow her to be. And the questions were very fair, I ended up with over a 100 in the class. The tests are made predominately from the powerpoint- Sometimes it just takes a little bit of critical application.
She was a good teacher and didn't give homework that wasn't optional (for extra credit). Her tests were fairly difficult, but were made much easier by attending class. The lab was the worst part about this class, which she had nothing to do with. I would recommend her if you go to class (and/or study well).
She is such a sweet lady, her tests are fair. Use mastering biology's practice tests, they really help. She is very enthusiastic and a great professor. Loved her.
Dr. Powell does a wonderful job engaging the students and preparing them for the tests. The enrichment lectures are interesting as well as boost your grade. She has a great personality that makes it worth it to get up for her early classes.
"P.I.M.P." (Primary Investigator Martha Powell) was a very engaging instructor who took a keen interest both her students' academic and personal success. If you go to class, take careful notes, and review the presentations, the class isn't bad at all. Take her!
Easiest class and nicest teacher ever. Go to class and write the papers for an easy A+
I loved Dr. Powell! She is so funny and excited about biology. Her class was fun. If you read over the slides a few days before the test and go to class, the class is not hard at all! An A is definitely possible. She tests on broad ideas-not so much on minute details. Take her class for sure! The class is much better if you get to know her!
Dr. Powell is an incredible teacher. She is very motherly and if you just read over her notes, her class is very easy. She also gives TONS of bonus points. I made 2 C's on exams and finished with an A. Go to class everyday and sit up front. She tends to make little comments that let you know what will be on the test. VERY helpful outside of class.
She is possibly one of my favorite teachers in college. I had her for intro too and she is just so passionate about fungus and it's hilarious her grading is so easy. She gives a ton of partial credit on her tests. I'm goin to miss her!
Dr. Powell a was really funny and nice professor. No homework or clicker questions. Tests count for 75% and lab for 25%. For the tests just read the book and study the slides. She does give bonus points (20) by attending enrichment periods, definitely should go to those since they can really help your grade.
Dr. Powell is a wonderful professor with passion for biology. Her courses are not difficult, provided you pay attention to her lectures and study for her exams. There are no quizzes or homework, and exams are 100% of your grade. She offers VERY generous extra credit (= 4% of final grade). Dr. Powell wants you to succeed and will help you do it.
Dr. Powell is an extremely nice lady, and HHMI with her is quite enjoyable. Her passion is evident!
Martha is the best! She's so funny and energetic, her class is easy if you put in moderate effort You don't need to buy the textbook, everything you need to know is in the slides!
Dr. Powell is an extremely passionate professor who is at the point of her career where she has fun teaching honors students Bio 2. While the material can get boring, the test are not too difficult and she offers extra credit worth 3 points on your final grade. Not my favorite class, but Dr. Powell is excellent
You don't need to show up to class because the powerpoints are online. She takes the test questions straight from the powerpoint. I recommend making flashcards to study. If you don't already own the textbook, save your money and don't buy it because you won't use it.
She is a sweet, funny, and incredibly smart lady and I enjoyed having her as a prof. The questions on her tests come from her lectures, but sometimes there will be questions on pieces of randomtrivial information that she throws in just to see who remembers the fun facts, so be warned! It was a hard class, but if you put in the work it's bearable!
Her tests are easy if you study her powerpoints and she gives bun points!
Dr. Powell was a very caring and knowledgeable professor. She made it her goal not to ruin any dreams of medical school for the pre-med people in the class. Very easy test with minimal studying.
Dr. Powell is great! It's clear that she has a passion for biology and it inspires you to appreciate it as well. Easy A as long as you show up to class and study the material on the powerpoints. She tests straight from them. Also, go to class even though there is no attendance! She often straight up tells you what will be on the exam.
Dr. Powell is awesome! She has a fun and gentle quirkiness and is great to talk to outside of class on a number of subjects. Read the book, come to class, do the value added, and definitely make sure to review the lecture notes before tests and you should be fine. Take note of examples she gives in class; there will be a few questions on the tests
Dr. Powell is a pretty easy teacher if you put the effort in. She offers easy extra credit that can add 3% to your final grade. Her class is 75% tests and 25% lab. That's it. So as long as you study and do well on tests you should get an A.
She's one of the few professors I've had who's passionate about her field, her research AND her students. Would willingly take any class she taught.
One of the best teachers I've had here. She truly cares about each student and always gives you hints about whats on the test. Everything is straight off her powerpoints. Easy A.
Dr. Powell is awesome. Absolutely would recommend. She is very funny and tests straight from her powerpoints. She does give extra credit, up to 3% over final grade. 5 tests, 40 mc questions each. no homework for this class. In class lectures she often tells you what will be on the exam but many people still skip because no attendance is taken
If you read her notes the tests are pretty easy. As you go along in the class, the tests get harder and the final is most definitely the hardest test. All of your grades in the class portion are from tests, no homework.
Dr. Powell was a great professor! She would explain what to expect as far as test format would go, would emphasize if something was important and if you should know it for the test, and was very passionate about what she did. She made class worth going to even if it was difficult. A decent amount of memorization.
Dr. Powell is extremely nice and caring. This translates to her lectures and exams - meaning she will give you all the information you need/want and then strongly suggest things to go over twice. Tests are pretty straightforward as well.
Dr. Powell is awesome! I really enjoy her as a teacher and she is funny. I take notes directly on her power points during class, and then take notes after class to review. Class isn't mandatory but the things she says are important. I would totally take her again, even if it wasn't for something I was interested in.
Dr. Powell is such a sweet, caring lady and it shows in her classes. Her lectures are usually interesting (for the subject matter) and she introduces members of the biology department & their research during recitation which was really cool. I only wish she provided some kind of study guide or practice prior to exams.
If you're taking General biology II I would definitely take her. You better study her slides very hard though because like all biology classes the questions are very specific. Shes such a sweet lady I was lucky to have her. I had marcus the semester before and I found it so much more clear what she wanted us to know.
Dr. Powell is the best. There is no homework and attendance is never taken, but she puts some questions on the test from lecture that aren't in the powerpoint so it is best to go. She also gives 3% extra credit at the end for attending the enrichment sessions. She is very sweet but make sure to sit close to the front because she has a soft voice.
TAKE HER. Dr. Powell is the sweetest lady ever. She is very accessible outside of class, her lectures are interesting and entertaining, and she gives extra credit. The class is not easy, but you can get an A if you study and pay attention. It's evident she loves what she does, and she makes it as interesting as possible. Would take again 10000000%.
The whole class is composed of 5 tests plus extra credit points basically. She is a pretty good professor just make sure you go to class and know everything out of the textbook before the tests.
Dr. Powell is the sweetest lady ever. She is extremely passionate about the subject and wants you to be engaged and interested as well. She cares about your success both in the class and in life and will do everything she can to help you in either. Probably my favorite professor in the biology department.
Take Dr. Powell! She is my favorite professor at UA and mycology has been my fav class! She cares about you learning and not about giving hard tests. The class was interesting and the lab was on what you covered in class right before so it was super helpful (unlike many bio labs). 20% of your grade is collection and it wasn't bad at all!
Professor Powell is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is funny, sweet, and willing to answer questions outside of class. Class attendance is not mandatory, but she often specifies test material during the lectures so it will greatly increase your chances of getting a good grade.
She is super funny and sweet and is so much fun as a teacher. She gets excited over topics that she knows we might find boring but makes jokes to keep it interesting and fun. She always is willing to answer questions and goes over the test in recitation immediately following the test so you can know the mistakes you made. Loved her!!!
Wonderful lady. The class is hard but her tests aren't that bad and she posts her PowerPoints.
Martha does a good job of trying to make lectures less dry. She likes to make jokes and give you different ways to remember different concepts. She's pretty cool and definitely worth taking.
Dr. Powell was a great professor. She is an small, older woman from North Carolina and has such a funny and adorable demeanor. The first two tests are harder than the last ones as there is much more memorization involved. Switching into an honors biology class was not as difficult as expected as long as you really study the powerpoints.
Martha is a sweet lady that loves biology and is very clear about what she wants everyone to know. The class is an easy A if you attend class and pay attention to when she points out exactly what shell ask about on the test and it is an easy B if you never attend.
An angel. Martha is incredibly sweet and I loved her jokes. The tests are not difficult at all as long as you study the powerpoints! There is no homework. Overall a great class
Martha Powell is a wonderful human being. She gives very reasonable tests; if you study her powerpoints that she goes through in class, you will do fine. She tells a lot of great biology jokes. Above all, Powell is extremely passionate, which is important for making lectures exciting.
A true gem and a joy to be around. Professor Powell really cares about the subject matter and expects you to hold up your end of the bargain as an honors student. She really appreciates talking to students about their career goals and passions outside of class as well.
Dr. Powell is a really sweet woman. She really cares about the content that she is teaching and she gives everyone the opportunity to do well. Go to every recitation in order to get extra points added to your grade. 120 is a lot easier that 118
Powell is a great prof with a sense of humor, and she usually keeps the lectures fairly interesting. I struggled at first to know exactly how to study for this class because she just has a completely different approach than Caldwell with BSC118, but once I understood that literally everything comes from the powerpoint I was fine. Just study those!
Dr. Powell is my favorite professor so far. She recommends buying the text book and atlas but I have never opened either of them. She is very funny and makes somewhat boring material interesting. She posts her power points online but I recommend going to class. Her tests are much easier than BSC 118.
Martha Powell is a great lady and an even better professor. She makes boring material interesting and is very passionate about the material she teaches. While attendance isn't mandatory, I recommend going to class. She gives "value added points" for going to recitation, which functions as extra credit. One of my favorite classes/professors.
