Good Spanish teacher
She requires a lot of work! She's a supper nice lady, I like her, but if you have never had spanish before I would not take her, unless you have A LOT of free time.
Avoid this teacher like the plague if you don't know any spanish. My class started for over 30, ended with 9. I got a D and three people did worse than me who took the final. The few people who passed knew spanish already.
this class is difficult but if you take the time to do the homework everyday you should still pass the class.
I am a spanish speaker and this class was frustrating. I pulled an A, but she would nail me on the essays. Basically, if you use words and are not Colombian dialect, you will lose points. I even used mainstream spanish and still got docked on vocab. This words were even in the dictionary and she still nailed me!
She critizises her students when it comes to their abilities, and ignores those who appear to be having difficulties.
very tough on spanish speakers. she grades difficult and expects too much.
She was a hard grader and didn't appreciate you not being at class, but overall was a good teacher
Don't take a language from a native speaker. She is too concerned with sticking to her leson plan and not with teaching her students spanish. If you do the work book and home work then you will get a good grade but you wont learn a lick of spanish.
Good teacher. Has real ability with the language and the accents, probably because she's from Venezuela.
As long as you do the work book and homework the tests will be easy. She can be a cool teacher. I had a good time in her class and i learned because i studied and did the assignments.
If you are serious about learning Spanish don't take a class with with this teacher. She wanted students to talk in Spanish but I had a hard time understanding her English. You can get a good grade if you do the assignments and agree with her 100%
She's a fun teacher, if you do the work, you will get an A
She hates spanish speakers.
Warning: For her you HAVE to have the book on the first day of class and will drop you automaticly if you miss more that 2 days.
hard to understand, treats you like your in high school
Notice she starts with a big group and at the end of the semester her group is a lot smaller. She embarasses students and that is not very professional. She literally makes students cry.
She misgraded the class the entire year and made it impossible to get any grade higher then what I received. She's not fair and I wouldn't at all recommend her. It may sound biased but in reality the majority of the class had problems with their grades and when we confronted her she refused to correct her mistake.
She is simply the worst teacher that i have ever had. The only time she actually started teaching was the last week of school, and by then it was too late.
She is a horrible teacher! i wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
If you are a spanish speaker DON'T taker her... If you are not a spanish speaker DON"T take her. She expects you to read her mind. Her English is not good and her grading system doesnt make scese. Eveyone had a hard time with her. Her class is for people that are willing to spend at least 20hours in the Lang Lab
Horrible Teacher!!!DO NOT TAKE HER!!She does not like spanish speakers. It is her way or no way! She forgets what she says. Be careful in checking your grades because she misplaces tests and misplaces grades.
I thought that she was a great teacher. but you have to go to her one on one! I took span 102 and i hated the other teacher because she didn't teach the way that vila does. she genuinely cares about her students and while she is strict, she is fair!
Doesn't teach, expects the WEBSAM to teach you everything, doesnt give students any credit that is lower than a "C", grades the tests to harsh, and is bias to those that don't understand what she expects from her. DONT TAKE HER!!!!! HINSON IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!
She grades everything very harshly. Everything. Tests, papers, an homework. If you don't collectively get at least 70% on the homework, she gives you a 0 on it. I've spent so many hours working on homework only to get a 67% and therefore get NO points for it. She refuses to slow down to help English speakers such as myself. She's horrible.
this teacher is very disorganized! you cant keep up with her disorganized teaching!she has a very thick accent and likes to pick on students ALOT. ive never had a class that i had to spend hours and hours on the computer and on homework.half of my semester went to just studying for her class and im a spanish speaker and i got a d!!DONT TAKE HER!
She is the worst teacher I've ever had!! She expects her students to know everything before she teaches it. DO NOT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL! I had 103% in span 101 with hinson and a 97% with franco in 102. Take hinson or franco.
I think this teacher is awsome!! She is very helpful and she will do whatever she can to help her students. She is easy to understand if you pay attention and you will do well if you give her a fair chance. I think that if you give her a fair chance you will do well in her class. Greatest spanish teacher!!!
Great spanish teacher! I don't know what all of these negative comments are about, all you have to do is practice, listen, do your homework and pay close attention in class (she has a pretty intense accent). You work hard in this class but it's 5 units of a foreign language people, of course it's hard! I highly recommend her for Spanish 101
OMG Worst teacher ever. CRITICIZES IF YOU DON'T ANSWER, RIDICULES IF YOU DO. I WORK MY BUTT OFF AND GETTING D's ON TESTS. I AM AN HONOR STUDENT. NEVER TAKEN A 5 UNIT CLASS WITH ONLY 50 MINUTES TO TEST. GRADES UNREALISTICALLY, FORGETFUL AND GETS MAD WHEN YOU CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT SHE DIDN'T TEACH YOU. DOESN'T TEACH DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER! DO NOT TAKE... VERY DISCRIMINITVE! UNORGANIZED UN ETHICAL AND HAS NO PEOPLE SKILLS WITH A BAD ACCENT!
Grades students very hard. She should not teach junior college. makes it impossible to pass the class! Especially if you have a daytime job.
Terrible spanish teacher. Very nice lady, but DO NOT take for spanish. She assigns online homework before you learn the section, and you have to get a 70% or you get a 0 for the entire chapter. What you learn in class is not even on the test. She doesn't explain concepts well at all. I do not recommend taking her class.
Nice lady, but a terrible teacher! Very unorganized, forgetful, and unprofessional. Its a 5 unit class, but way too much work is assigned! Explains material too vaguely for a foreign language class. I do not recommend this teacher, ESPECIALLY AN ELEMENTARY SPANISH CLASS.
Highly condescending, forgetful, and relentlessly cruel; very unprofessional. Her grading scale is ridiculous. You can attend every class, participate 100%, complete all of the homework, visit her during office hours, and still not pass the class. Suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. Avoid this professor if at all possible.
Highly unprofessional professor! Condescending, unorganized, and not very helpful when you get the nerve to approach her about a problem you are having. I do believe that she has good intentions, but she is extremely ineffective. Avoid this professor if at all possible.
This teacher is not very good. She belittles students in front of the whole class, and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. This class is also difficult in itself. A ton of work must be done and the tests are 55% of your grade. Do not take this class if you are interested in learning a language because she will quickly kill that spirit.
she is a rude teacher; she does not take the time to go over the lessons. she always gives pop quizzes even if you are not ready for it and only gives you a few minutes to complete them. do not take her class find another instructor if you want to pass spanish!!!
Terrible. A non english speaker so she doesn't understand when her students get confused about something, and even gets defensive when you ask a question. Take Franco if you're serious about learning spanish. If you're not a native spanish speaker do not take this class.
She is absolutely horrible. One of the worst teachers I've had at VVC(and that is saying something). She is very strict on attendance, even if you are 2 minutes late, she'll mark it down. Assigns pop quizzes that are ridiculously hard. And she grades very strict. DO NOT TAKE HER.
This teacher doesn't teach very well. I wouldn't suggest that anyone who doesn't already know spanish to take her classes. Because English is her second language it is really hard for her to be understood when she speaks it. I personally don't understand why they hired her at VVC because I'm pretty sure she only passes 1 student a semester.
Not an easy class, but hey this is college!! Yes you need to try and participate or she'll give you the look...lol. You get what you put in. She is fair. Has students read and memorize the verbs before they come to class. There are probably better and easier teachers out there. She did her job though.
villa is a very hard instructor, she believes that since the first natives that learned spanish had no books, she takes this out on her students.she uses on the spot intimidation and runs her classroom like a columbian boot camp..SHE WILL embarrass you if you did your homework or not!!!!DO NOT TAKE VILLA!!!!she has it out for everyone.....
Don't take this class unless your a spanish professor.Super hard and very strict teacher.
She is a good teacher. This is not an easy class. She is very strict when it comes to attendance and participation. PAY ATTENTION and you must study to pass this class. Always bring your text book to class and leave your cell phone off.
Avoid this class! She doesn't teach, you are required to teach yourself She frequently has headaches and has to end class early. She does not help with sentence structure and docks points for EVERYTHING on the tests. She only gives 30 mins for the tests and spends most of the time conversing w/Span speaking students instead of helping the class
Strict. Rude. Always in a bad mood. Heavy amounts of homework (hours) that consist of online, bookwork, and thick packets. I tried to take her style of teaching as a positive thing. This became difficult when I realized over half the class was failing. I'm not sure why the school has not re-evaluated her. Waste of time, hard EFFORT, and money.
AWFUL teacher. RUDE, makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Strict, Marks your grade down for stupid little things. She complains and give A LOT of homework. Do yourself a favor and take another teacher. Also, she gives you an answer booklet for your manuals then winds up correcting it. Doesn't make sense!
She assigns 20 hrs worth of homework per week even for chapters she hasn't yet taught (and doesn't plan to teach; you must teach yourself), docks points for minor errors, even docks points if you are two minutes late to class. Drops you if you miss a day. Belittles you in front of the class. Calls the class childish and condescending names. Talks to you while you're taking a test (which is 6 pages and she only gives you 40 mins to complete). Even if you're fluent, you probably won't pass.
extremly strict go with a diffrent professor
LOT OF WORK. Must be done the way she wants no exceptions. Doesn't matter if you do all the work, it must be done perfectly aswell.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! She's rude and inconsiderate. She intimidates students in any way she possibility could. If you didn't know the answer to one of her questions, she'd make fun of you and call you out on it in front of everyone. She has a very strong accent and gives a ton of homework as well as online homework. Take with another professor!!!
so basically this teacher will assign homework and not review it before-hand, if you take the main campus class you will be required to do online work regardless of the fact that it is not a hybrid class, she will then review homework for all of class (she does not teach, only review)and she will go over text book work and not clearly explain it.
i don't know why people are always complaining about her she does a good job and we talk alot it was nice to have a teacher coming from the same place as me and the tests weren't that hard and she's not as strict as people say she is, easy class
worst teacher
Bad teacher. She will humiliate you in front of the class, you will loose all your passion for the subject if you had any, the majority of the time she will speak to Spanish speakers, and people who do not need much help, she will not Teach in class. Just review hw, and group work. She will give you no time to complete tests.
The teacher has a very thick accent and doesnt know English perfect, but she has high expectations of students. For me it was second semester learning Spanish. The program I think is too fast anyways, Villa doesnt take into account that everyone is different level. She will cater to Spanish speakers who need the least help.
Is the worst spanish teacher I've seen, never explain anything, and is difficult to understand, if you really want to pass this class don't take it with her
I have never taken spanish before, and will probably never try again. Vila made me absolutely miserable. She will call you out for your mistakes and laugh at you to make you look stupid in front of the class. I ended up having to withdraw from the class. Avoid this teacher like the plague!
Horrible teacher she makes fun of all her students if they don't get an answer right she even makes fun of one of the disable students!. She gives loads of homework and super strict online works. She doesn't teach as much as just reviews if you didn't take a Spanish class before you are sure to fail this. I can around 50% is bearly passing .
Please AVOID this professor at all costs, I took this and I had to drop out. The class was overloaded with TONS of online homework. She treats her students really bad and humiliates them in front of the class. She seems to only care about the native speakers, and she ignores the beginners who TRULY need help. And she is very disorganized.
This class was so difficult. I enjoyed my class mates and she was sometimes funny but overall the learning experience wasn't good. There was way too much material to learn in a short amount of time. It was hard to keep up every week. Also you cannot leave the classroom without being marked down participation points. I suggest other professor.
Professor Vila is one tough cookie, but each instructor has their way of teaching a class & this happens to be her way. Not an easy class. Lots of work to be put in so be prepared. Even if you miss one question on your homework (not online), she will not accept it. Make sure you know your material or because she will call you out to answer.
She is very strict on students being on time. She is rude and will kick you out of class for the smallest things. She assigns ridiculous amounts of homework on material has never been covered in class. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!
Difficult class , but you will learn more if you try . I always showed up on time and I would have received an A , but was a bit lazy with my homework and studying , so I got a B . This class is not for kids who want an easy grade . If you can't understand something , she was always there for me.
Very poor teacher, makes fun of classmates doesn't help and doesn't care that most of her students fail her class. She does not know how to teach. Do not take her class unless you are fluent in Spanish! or your a professor!
Not helpful at all, and very rude teacher. Extremely difficult grader who assigns a LOT of homework. Tests are hard as well. She often gets confused by questions and then doesn't ever answer the question and her speaking is hard to understand. Will kick you out of class and dock participation points for small things. Not recommended for beginners.
Whew, was this class tough! Martha is a very strict teacher, but I never found her unapproachable. I sought help from her a lot. As a 47 year old English only speaker, I struggled, oh yes. But with her feedback and encouragement, I managed to pass with a B. She can be a little impatient, but made the class laugh a lot. Have to say, I respect her.
Not fluent don't take. Lots of hw & must be prepared. She does not help too much you kind of need to study on your own day before. Very impatient, if you want to pass you need to just do all hw and actually study.
This was probably the hardest class ever! But I'm quite happy that I took this class. It's a lot work but it is a foreign language class after all. There is online work also so you'll feel like you're taking 2 classes. Martha is a great teacher, one thing that's annoying is that she takes points off for EVERYTHING! and she's very strict.
Martha was a good teacher. However, she was strict and wouldn't go over anything twice. She jokes around with her students, which can sometimes come off as rude, but she doesn't intend for it to be. If you're attentive, then you'll do fine with her, but she's definitely a hard teacher. I got an A, but it was the hardest A that I've ever received!
Very nice person, but I feel like I'm in hell when I'm in her class. She has a twisted sense of sarcasm, and doesn't take the students serious. The only reason I'm passing is cause I'm Mexican, but every non-Spanish speaker dropped the class.
This instructor does not teach the material effectively and makes it very difficult to learn in her classroom. Mannerism is also very poor. I highly recommend not taking her course unless you are fluent in spanish and there are no other open classes.
Would not recommend this professor if you are taking more classes. She is very hard to pass. Absolutely no extra credit what so ever. The book is about 250 and you will need to dedicate about 9 hrs online on top of the other assigned homework. She is not good at going your paste. It is always done her way. If you don't know any Spanish don't take
If you've no previous experience in Spanish, NEVER take this class during intercession. The homework is helpful, but worth very little compared to the written tests. The tests are brutal because you are expected to know the genders of nouns and have PERFECT conjugation by the first test (on the first week). She is a nice person, otherwise.
This class was especially brutal for an 8-week course, and I remembered the majority of my Spanish lessons from high school. When it comes to tests, she wants you to use only what you learned up until that chapter, otherwise she will call you out when you go ahead. If you try to step beyond your limits, you will be called out.
I took this class as my first class at VVC. Avoid this teacher like the plague. She will interrupt you, degrade you, and dock points before you even have a chance to speak. She will forget what happened last class, or will get you confused with someone else and take points from you. Horrible, inconsiderate teacher. Never take her.
Never spoken a word of Spanish in my life. So I decided to take elementary spanish as my mandatory foreign language. She makes me feel beyond dumb in her class and singles me out in front of everyone EVERY SINGLE CLASS. She tears my tests apart with all of her markings and is such a hard grader! SOOOO much work is expected. overall, DO NOT TAKE!!
She is absolutely awful!! She is rude and speaks broken english. I took 4 years of spanish in High School including AP and she is grading me so hard. I feel like im in an advanced spanish class. If youve never taken spanish before you will not pass this class. She is very rude and takes away your points if you have to miss class. the book is $200!!
all i can say is omg worst teacher ever i wish i could drop without a w. do not ever take this class especially if you have never taken spanish before!!! and the book is over 200 dollars!!!
She is such a terrible teacher please never take any class with her. She doesnt even go by the syllabus, and she makes things up as she goes. The text is ridiculously expensive and she is extremely rude.
I speak spainish. OVER/hard grader , if you misspell or miss any punctuations your marked wrong for the whole question. If you don't complete A section on your homework ZERO credit. If your late 2-3min -15points. If you can't answer a question minus points. She's was mean, and rude more then 1/2 way through the semester but eased up at at the end
I'm a native Spanish speaker and have taken 3 years of Advance Spanish during high school. The only professor who I have ever struggled in was in Vilas class. She has temper tantrums and does not follow the sllybus. I don't understand how she still manages to teach with the severe mood swings and outbursts directed towards her students.
I knew that going to Victor Valley College, there would be tough professors. BUT Martha Vila is honestly the worst professor ever. I can't believe VVC keeps her there and why she even wants to teach. Has no respect for her students, yells, makes you feel stupid, and she seriously doesn't like to talk to you or teach you. She expects you to know.
Horrible teacher, made people feel stupid for getting answers wrong, read incorrect answers out loud, takes off points for everything. I usually don't complain about teachers but this time i will make an exception. Spanish speakers beware if you say a word she did not teach yet points will be marked down.
She follows the colleges requirements for attendance so missing class isn't in your best interest. However he teaching style I like. She makes sure the whole class understands before moving on and doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't understand something. Our class was kind of small so it made it more personable which I liked.
For being "elementary spanish", this class is ridiculous! She assigns crazy amounts of homework, which leaves you no study time, time for other classes, or home time. Expect 70 assignments and up over the weekend. She's biased and doesn't answer simple questions. She marks down for every missed accent or misspelling. The list goes on... beware!
Mrs. Vila is an extremely tough grader. If you aren't willing to put in hours at home to study you will NOT get a good grade in her class. People assume that because they are spanish speakers they can get an easy A, but that is not the case. If you want to learn this class if for you, if not id advise you not to take this class.
Vila is a great instructor and cares a lot about the material being discussed. The class is difficult, but this is expected since Spanish requires a lot of practice. She does what she can to make sure students are really understanding the material.
If you have any option, DO NOT take section with this instructor. Like any class you have to put in time and effort, but this class is unbearable. She expects you to have everything memorized the moment it comes out of her mouth and gets angry when you get any answer wrong. She belittles students and purposely makes them feel bad. Do not do it!
If I could give her a 0 rating I would. Not only is she a terrible teacher, but she is very rude as well. I ended with an 89.97% and she almost did not round the grade including the fact that she lost several of my assignments. The online hw is hell and good luck getting a response to an email. save yourself the hassle and take someone else
horrible teacher. Do not waste your time with her. She makes fun of you if you do not speak Spanish and do not get me started with the tests. If you spell a Spanish word right she marks it wrong. And if you miss two days or late for one minute she takes away 15 points of your participation points. even if you have an legit excuse she does not care
For being a Elementary Spanish class it was TOUGH. There is a lot of quizzes and the midterm and final impact your grade a lot. Make sure you do the hw b/c its easy points and be on time or she will take off points. If you miss more than 2 days she will drop you. She is a tough grader so study study study. Lastly, she IS rude so be prepared!!!
Prof. Vila is a nice person, but she is a very tough teacher. She sets unrealistic expectations for her students and she gets angry if you fail to reach them or even exceed them. Should you take her class, be sure to complete your homework as soon as you receive it. If you are advanced in Spanish, avoid using words that she hasn't covered yet.
TERRIBLE! Sarcastic and does not respect the students. She expects too much from a student for being a beginning level Spanish class, and has zero patience. She likes to brag about how other classes are better than yours and she makes you feel un-welcomed. You want to not come to class because of how she makes you feel and treats you. STAY AWAY!!!!
very rude teacher and she will take away 15 points if u leave to the restroom or if you are late she will take points away as well. If you miss 2 classes you get dropped. My class started with 28 students and she ended up with 9 so be prepared and if you dont speak spanish dont take her and if you dont have her book she will tell you to leave.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!She doesnt know how to teach at all she expects us to learn everything on our own so when we go to class all she does is question us on the lesson that SHE DIDNT TEACH US then gets upset when we dont know and blames us for not studying when instead she should actually explain the lesson to us. Dont take her class!!
Profesor Vila has positives and negatives. She has funny humor during class, and will work one on one with students at times. The downside is that she deducts 15 points if you are late or have to leave the class lecture at any time.
This is your final warning. Do. Not. Take. This. Class. All of the other negative reviews are accurate. If you can't put in at least 20 hours a week into this class, don't even bother. If you don't already speak Spanish, then good luck. This is the unbeatable boss. Minus points for this minus points for that. She loves to see her students struggle.
By far the absolute worst instructor I have ever had in my whole entire life. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!! If you are NOT a Spanish speaker, she will try to humiliate you in front of your peers. I personally have a 3.925 GPA and NO cognitive delays however, she made a point to reference that I may need ACCESS assistance in order to stay afloat. #SMH
Too much work if you do not participate or get the right answer she takes away participation points.
Professor Villa is very rude likes to insult those who know spanish because they do not know proper spanish. She grades really hard. She doesn't explain properly as to how she wants her work done. She's horrible at communicating with her students. don't have time to take her class you will fail even after doing all the work. She deducts points .
This professor was horrible. She is so rude. She calls you out and makes fun of you in front of your classmates. She is belittling in emails, in class and over the phone. Constantly telling me to drop the class because I won't pass. This is an elementary class for NON Spanish speakers and she doesn't take that into consideration. Be careful!!!
This has to be the worst teacher on this planet. She really makes everything so difficult for no reason. Do not take her class, save yourself the time.
I recently took her Spring 2020 and I will NEVER take another of her courses. Martha was very rude and unprofessional. She will call you out and embarrass you in front of the class. COVID happened in the middle of the semester and she made no effort to help her students online. No compassion for anything. Never again.
Didnt learn much. She is very by the book and wants you to learn more from the homework than actually teaching spanish.
