TONS OF READING. She may be one of the worst profs I've had here at UWL. Rarely uses board or powerpoint, she just lectures in monotone and it's impossible to keep up with notes-I gave up after the third day, now I just listen and try to retain the info. She announced the final is essay, cumulative, and NOT take-home. I'm screwed.
Absolutely the worst history professor I have had here at UW-L, and that says a lot becasue there are a number of really bad ones. I have never written on here but I needed to warn funture students. She is bad. Expects you to read like 7 novels and a ton of other reading. Trying to listen to her lectures is impossable. Nice woman, horrible tea
She really shouldn't be teaching a 100 level, gen ed history class. I typically have no problem with lecturers, but hers are practically impossible to follow. I found little meaning in her lectures and assigned readings. Although I feel as though she means well, I do not recommend her as a professor.
A really really nice woman...and a really horrible professor. They should really make it mandatory for professors to take courses so they can learn how to teach. Lectured off a piece of paper. Skipped at least once a week. Surprisingly easy grader (spent 2hrs on take home midterm and got a C). But-in a nutshell-extremely painful to go to class
Every class was a very boring and hard to follow lecture that made no sense. She had a very monotonous and quiet voice that was hard to hear a well. All tests were essay and she never handed back any of our graded work such as tests or other essays. I did not enjoy the class at all! I would not recommend her!
She was very nice, and obviously interested in the subject, but was not exactly a gifted teacher. She assigned tons of reading (2 novels, plus lots of packets - I did little and still managed an A), only handed back one graded assignment the duration of the semester, and gave uninspired, difficult-to-follow lectures.
She was not very exciting at all, and she was pretty bias towards the girls in the class. Each unit had the exact same theme. However, I personally believe that the entire history program at La Crosse is poor so pick your poison.
She's a nice lady. However, she cannot teach. Not only do her lectures consist of her talking in monotone, they also are not really relevant. It is not necessary to waste your time going to class. I would not recommend her.
Nice Lady, but the first half of the semester I have no clue what she was talking about. Her lectures are very unorganized. Test are ok but I think her grading is bias and she favors certain students. By this point in her life she should be a better teacher.
Horrible teacher. She's is a frail old lady who happens to be a radical feminist. She comes off as very atheist and alienates Christians and those of other beliefs. STAY AWAY.
Boring boring boring. She gives out a bunch of reading that does not relate to what she talks about. Rarely uses powerpoints, just talks
It is true the class is pretty boring. She has a monotonous voice and after she puts up a slide she will ramble on for long periods of time. Very difficult to concentrate cuz of this. for the midterm she gave us a study guide with all the vocab, places we needed to memorize and EXACT essay questions. boring, but not too hard.
Just do not take this teacher. I have not learned one thing, absolutley no personality.
yes it's true that class can become extremely boring because of her long rambles and monotone voice, but just take notes and you'll do fine. the class is easy. there are only a few assignments aside from tests, so do well on the papers.
I think she's a great teacher and I can't believe how mean (and what bad spellers) the idiots who have written here are. She's a great scholar, a model feminist, and I find her work very interesting. I wish I could take more classes with her.
Only write about fact. Don't write about your opinion. I found that she mumbled the majority of the time making it very easy to fall asleep. If you get stuck with her. Good luck.
Lybeck comes off as your average run of the mill history teacher. She is very hard to hear even sitting in the 4 row, she seems very neverous teaching and often will throw in random material that has nothing to do with the unit. She mumbles a lot and has lots of material that must be read (the majority of the test is on this). Attendance mandatory!
ok.. Marti is boring. Really boring. BUT.. the class is SUPER easy. You write 2 papers out of class and one in class essay. Exams are easy because she gives you all the words and essays that are on the exam.. as long as you kind of have a good idea of what to write.. your good. Overall.. boring.. but easy to get a good grade!
Class is not very interesting and it's hard to stay awake. She is not always clear on what she wants for the essays. However, she gave a very helpful study guide for the mid-term and gave rewrite on an essay. Nice lady. would not be upset to get her again. BTW read the articles because she gives pop quizzes
I liked Professor Lybecks personality and she is a very nice person. I have a genuine interest in the subject matter as well. She just has some quality that does make me ever so sleepy. I dont think of it as any reflection of her as a teacher tho. Do the readings or you will be sorry. Good teacher overall.
She does not teach history. She thinks she is an english teacher. All semester we did writing exercises that had nothing to do with anything that we were currently studying. The only relevance of writing was a single one page paper that we turned in all semester and the two short essays on the mid-term. She is a terrible educator!
At the ripe age of 18 or so, with not even a whole semester of college completed, what makes people like the last commenter think they know what history or education is? A few years of high school + Jr. High history with some teach with half Lybeck's education? Certainly nothing rational, defensible, or in any way real. Lybeck is a fine teacher.
Nice lady but not a history teacher. She likes to focus a lot on writing but it her own style of writing. It is hard to know what she expects.
I absolutely dreaded going to this class. She is a nice and very smart person but expects the most vague and unnecessary things. Her lectures were very hard to follow and her outlines she had on the projector weren't even covered in class. I felt like that class was for history majors and not a gen. ed course. Wouldn't recommend...
Professor Lybeck definitely knows her material. However, the class is VERY dry and sometimes confusing, I personally didn't like it very much, but it's not hard to do well. On the papers and essays, just find historical context, quotes from the sources, and a simple message and tie them together. Also, she loves participation in class.
Very high expectations that are almost impossible to meet. If she wrote a paper for her own class, forgot it was hers and turned it in she would get a B at best. LOTS of required reading and 5 pop quizzes. Tests are very long and require a lot of studying. Her voice is very monotone and hard to understand at times. However, I learned a lot!
SOOO BORING. i seriously dread going to this woman's class. very feminist- only focused on how women were treated so horribly back in the past. she is very hard to understand and learn from. we are 3 weeks into class & i feel like i haven't learned anything from her..
Not a good teacher at all. I'm not even done with the semester and i feel as though i haven't learned much at all. She just stands in front of the class and lectures. Also she is HORRIBLE at helping and answering questions.
Prof. Lybeck is very boring. It is so hard to stay focused in her class. Her tests and papers are very hard. I would not recommend her.
Lybeck is a very difficult teacher to follow. She mostly lectures with very little visual aids or powerpoint. She speaks very quietly and her voice is very monotone; I would suggest sitting close to the front. The class is very boring but it isn't very difficult. If you take notes on her lectures you should be fine.
An extremely boring professor - her class is a drag to sit through. The class is not too difficult just so boring! Avoid her if possible.
Professor Lybeck is very nice and knowlegable..but I hate to say it the other posts are pretty accurate. Class not hard but can be drag. She is monotone and has old school style of lecture...but u get out what u put in,do the readings and answere questions in class, helps class go by faster..college isn't suppose to be easy sorry to say..
She is an extremely knowledgeable woman but her way of presenting the information is pretty boring. I believe she truly believes in offering help to students and doing anything she can do to help but I don't think many people take advantage of it. She's not going to give you a good grade unless u truly earn it! Welcome to college!
Very interested and passionate about the information she is teaching. You will get reading assignments every day. Only have 3 essays (one in class) and two exams. Contrary to what others say, I don't believe her to be a hard grader. I'm not an amazing writer and I got A's on all of my papes. If you put in the effort A good grade will come out of it
Lybeck was not a very good teacher. She takes attendance every day yet you can barely hear her when she calls your name. She has lots of reading assignments and her topics jump around quickly from day to day. She told me I had a solid paper only to find out I got a C. Very boring lectures
Personally, I loved Prof. Lybeck. She knows the material she's covering, gives plenty of time to complete all assignments and is willing to meet with students if they are struggling. If you do the reading, and show up to class you'll get a good grade. Really nice lady.
She is aweful. She speaks really quietly and bounces from one topic to another. Don't take her! Her class was on gender roles, masculinity, and femininity, it's really boring and everything is always the same. She literally tells you the first day that if you don't like this topic for the course then you should drop this class.
Worst prof I've had thus far. Her PP doesn't match with her lecture, she rambles and you wonder if you need to know it or not. She is boring and monotone. I was looking forward to the class but very disappointed. All tests have tons of essay questions. Was marked down on papers for information I had to find myself that she hadn't provided.
She talks super quietly and mumbles a lot. Class is sooo boring, and you're supposed to take notes on her talking. However, using the textbook will help you a lot in having a clearer understanding of the topic. After I looked at the text, I understood it better. You can use the reading assignment to help you on quizzes
I loved Prof. Lybeck. Her class was super easy. We never had homework and as long as you went over the material, you'd be fine to take any quiz/test. She has an extremely soft voice and it can be hard to stay focused during her lectures, a bit boring. But aside from that, she was the best history teacher I have taken at UW-L.
She mumbles alot and it's difficult to stay alert and awake in the class. Taking notes from her lectures are sort of difficult. However, if you read the material and take time to write good essays, you'll be fine.
I didn't enjoy this class, she jumps around a lot and it is kind of hard to follow what she is talking about. Basically if you relate every essay to Gender you will get an alright grade. She takes attendance every day, and class is extremely boring
Boring. That is what I have to say. There are no exams so lecture is fairly pointless, and the readings are typically quite long. Her lectures are drawn out more than they need to be, and I spent half of class time on facebook.
She was an awful teacher. She mumbled a lot and it was required to take notes on just her talking. The papers were fairly easy, but there was a lot of readings to do for the class that were generally long. She made the class boring and she jumped for subject to subject quite frequently. Very hard to follow. I would absolutely NOT recommend her.
Professor Lybeck is very knowledgeable about the class. However, her lectures are so boring! The quizzes are fairly easy (If you read the long assignments) and she prepares you for the papers really well. I probably would take her again but be prepared for loooonnnng lectures.
Boring! Her history classes work more like a literature class. You read novels about fictional characters and settings in a historical time period, but that's as far as the history part goes. I learned a lot about fictional characters, not so much about actual history.
Lybeck is a nice lady, but her lectures were boring. Just know if you are going to take the class she is a huge feminist and seems to have it out for men.
Initially she starts the course as if it will be a women's rights course. Far from though, and she knows her information. However she does mumble and mess with mice a lot. All you have to do is read the articles and listen to her. The 6-7 papers are really easily graded. Easy course overall.
This was my worst class ever!! Seriously hated it with a passion. There are no tests and that is the only positive of the class. Lectures are boring and you have to take notes on just her talking. You have to write about 7 papers! If you're an okay writer it would be easy to get a B or C, but I worked too hard to get an A for a 100 level course
Lybeck is a boring prof. but she is very nice. she is a very easy grader when it comes to the long essay's. If you need help she makes sure she can meet with you at any time. makes extra office hours toward the end of the semester as well for extra help.
Such a boring class!! She is very monotone, and do the same thing every day. Read an article, come to class and discuss the article. She doesn't give quizzes or tests though so thats very nice. Its an easy Gen Ed but super super boring.
Don't take this class unless you have to. She is very monotone and hard to listen to. She makes you read at least 50 pages a night. She also makes you take notes off of her talking. There's no powerpoints or any guidance. It's very hard, as well as the class in general.
Listening to her talk is the worst thing in the world. VERY monotone & dull/drab. Readings for every class period and a paper due at the end of each unit. So about 6 or 7 papers I believe. If she doesn't agree with you she kind of tears what you're saying down, but pretty easy though.
She is a very easy grader of the 6 papers you have to do over the semester. No quizzes or tests either. I dreaded going to this class every day however: read an article, discuss it in class. Nothing else. No PowerPoints or outlines at all which makes taking notes difficult. This class was as easy as gen eds should be, but ridiculously boring.
Very boring class. She is really helpful with papers if you go into her office hours. There are 6 or 7 papers that are based off of articles read outside of class. It isn't a hard class but very, very boring. There is no penalty for missing class but there are participation points.
I actually really enjoyed Professor Lybeck. Although her lectures can be boring I think the topic of Family and Gender is very interesting and you can tell she knows her stuff and is passionate about it! There 10 question quizzes at the end of every chapter and a writing prompt. 3 papers. She is a fairly easy grader and overall nice lady.
This class is absolutely awful! This class was way to difficult for a 100 gen ed course. The only positive thing about this course is that there were no tests. There are 3 papers and a quiz at the end of each chapter. She words the quizzes in such a confusing way that you don't even know what she's asking. Whatever you do, don't take her.
I never really liked History. But after hearing Dr. Lybeck drone on in her monotone voice about gender and family made me hate it. There are a lot of readings that you have to do. The only good thing is that there are no tests. Just a quiz at the end of the chapter. I dreaded going to class, and participation in her class is a grade.
In all honesty, this was a pretty challenging course. I had to spend a lot of my time preparing for chapter book quizzes. Her lectures are suuper long and sometimes very complicated to understand. You should definitely show up, because she covers a lot of material. It is super helpful if you visit her during office hours, she'll proofread papers!
Professor Lybeck is VERY knowledgeable of all content in her class, but is very dry in the delivery. Her lectures are long and packed with information. A multiple choice and informal essay every 2 weeks, plus 3 formal essays (worth a total of 38% of your grade), and a final (2 more essays). She is a reasonable grader, and will help if needed.
It can be hard to pay attention in this class. She has pretty clear expectations for the course but people generally lose interest quickly. I thought her class was pretty average, not really good or bad, but I like to speak up in class. She will respect you if you respect her.
Prof. Lybeck is a great professor that is willing to do anything she can to help a student. She is a harder greader and there are a large amount of writings in her class. How she grades them it isnt possible to get anything higher than a 95% on them. This is actually a great score for her class though.
I did not enjoy coming to this class. Professor Lybeck is very knowledgable but she just has very boring lectures. There are a lot of writing assignments in this class so be prepared for that. She wasn't great but she wasn't horrible.
The class is very boring and the topics covered are also very boring. Her lectures aren't in a logical order and they jump around a lot so it's very difficult to follow along. She doesn't make any powerpoint for the lectures she just writes random words on the board. The papers are also difficult and she's a hard grader. Do not take Prof. Lybeck
Lybeck is definitely knowledgeable on what she's teacher but she makes it impossible to pay attention in class. She also doesn't use a powerpoint so you have to assume everything she says is important which means you will take lots of notes. Her quizzes can be tough because she puts 2 options that are almost identical.
Professor Lybeck is a terrible teacher. She does not respect students. In fact, multiple times throughout the semester she called on students and laughed at their responses. Her class is extremely boring and useless and her tests are difficult and unclear. Her papers are do-able, but not easy. AVOID THIS CLASS AND PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! RUN!!!!!!!
Professor Lybeck is not the worst teacher out there but class is in no way fun. Class is very boring and she usual talks for half of it. She is hard to hear and hard to follow. There are 5 quizzes and 5 in-class writings where you can get a 75, 85 or 95. It is extremely hard to get 95%. However, she does drop the lowest one. There's also 3 papers.
She is very dull and boring to listen too. Get ready for a lot of papers with little criteria of what she's looking for.
Marti Lybeck is a very unclear professor. Get ready to read boring stories and have to write about them in historical context. If you don't read, you won't know what is going on. It is nearly impossible to get a 100%. 5 quizzes, 5 in class writings and 3 papers. She is boring to listen to and easy to tone her out. If you can, don't take her.
She really struggles with trying to explain things in class. She is an extremely low talker and it is hard to listen to her, I sit in the front row and I can barely hear her.
She is very specific in what she wants. Her thoughts are the only right answers. Don't take this class if you can't take criticism or being wrong. If you do take it don't feel bad for being wrong in her perspective because it's happened to the best of us.
Marti was one of the toughest professors I've ever taken. Everything you learn is through word of mouth as she offers no powerpoints or any type of visual. If you take her, be a fast writer and always show up to class. Her office hours are a must for doing well on her 3 big papers. I would look into taking another history professor.
Marti makes things more difficult than they need to be! Her lectures are hard to follow along with and she doesn't slow down so be a fast writer. Her grading scale is weird, but passable if you spend time reading and coming to her office hours. All I have to say is good luck!
Dr. Lybeck has not been that great of a professor compared to the many amazing ones that we have at UW-L. She would often ask the class to answer difficult or complex questions and laugh when students answered incorrectly. She also mumbles and it is hard to follow what she says. Overall, a tough situation for any student that I would not suggest.
Not clear at all, super hard to follow he lectures because of how disorganized she is. When writing essays, your opinions and analysis's are wrong if they aren't what she agrees with. Comments on essays are not helpful. Says things like "no" with no further explanation. I was looking forward to this class and I was extremely disappointed.
I have never been so frustrated taking a class in my life. Her lectures are very disorganized, long and boring. She is very quiet and awkward. She will often laugh at you in front of the class if you answer a question wrong. She is unclear in her grading criteria, and is a VERY hard grader. Avoid this class at any cost.
Professor Lybeck was at times a little boring and her lectures could drag on, but throughout the semester she gave her students opportunities to succeed. She won't wow you with flambouiancy but she'll teach you the necessities through lectures. Put the work in and it's an easy pass.
In lecture, make sure you read the chapter before class. You do a lot of in class work with groups, but she only gives about 5-10 minutes to share ideas. Tough class. Very boring.
Eight 2 page papers throughout the semester, a research assignment project for the end of the semester and then a 8-10 page final for the final. No thank you.
Dr. Lybeck, is a a very hard professor to follow. her lectures are so boring! I feel like I have not learned a thing. She is very hard to listen to, and sometimes a hard grader. you can't skip class, or you wont pass. you never get the something she does from the readings.
Prof. Lybeck was overall fine. The course material itself is really boring, so I can't fault her too much for having a similarly boring class. If you haven't taken much world history before, this class will be pretty tough. Quizzes and writing both short essays and papers make up most of the grade. Pretty passable class, but not easy.
Be prepared to read a lot, class lectures are about the reading and you are expected to participate in discussion about it. She drops your lowest test and writing grade which is nice if you do horribly on only one of them. If you are able to analysis documents easily, take this class.
Lybeck has scattered & boring lectures (and she has a raspy voice.) Attendance & participation matter a lot! The homework is mostly reading; grades are based on a multiple choice quiz & short essay on each section plus two long essays. As long as you're a good writer, it's an easy A for writing. Overall, this class is average.
AVOID THIS CLASS. This class involves a ridiculous amount of reading and requires class participation in order to do semi-decent in the class. No matter how well your papers are written she will always find things to dock points on. She has "quizzes" which are basically tests and are not easy whatsoever. Do not take her!!!
I really enjoyed taking this class with her. She is very knowledgeable on her subject. She is willing to help students who want to make sure that their papers are well-written. She is a very caring and respectful professor.
Really knowledgeable professor who is really concerned in helping make sure that we understand what we are reading and writing a good paper. Tough grader but makes her standards very clear as to what she is grading on.
I do not recommend her. She relies on how you right and not what you right about. She has "quizzes", which are test. If you do not get a question right in class, she will tell you how upset she is that you are wrong. VERY HARD GRADER, not very realistic.
Usually readings as homework. Take notes on the readings because there are quizzes after every reading and you can use your notes on the quizzes. Some are collected, some are not. Many papers but no tests. There are in-class papers which you do with a partner and 2 formal papers. Participate and listen in class and you will get an A.
If you are looking into doing a lot of learning on your own and putting in a lot of work to be shut down when it comes to your grade, I recommend this class. At times Professor Lybeck can be alright, but for the most part , she is very hard to follow and her lectures don't help much in the grand scheme of things. Nearly daily quizzes also included.
She will let you know how upset she is when you get an answer wrong in class, and will sometimes laugh at you for it.
I don't recommend this class. You have readings due almost every class period, and there is a quiz every day there is reading due; only some are collected, but you don't know which ones will be. The papers are graded EXTREMELY tough. Even if you go into office hours, it seems that you don't receive much help and will still get a harsh grade.
