Confuses you more by his horrible teaching. However, people in the class kept asking moronic questions that is irrelevant for the course. Also, when there is a "good" question being asked, he either cant answer it, or word it very badly!
Nice guy, rather disorganized teaching style. If you ask him for help after class, he'll help you to the best of his abilities. He's passionate about his teaching and it shows.
Doesn't give notes and his midterm was difficult and too long but he will help you as much as he can when you go see him. I think he would be a better teacher if he kicked the two girls out of 9AM section-they ask toomanyquestions unrelated to the course
he sucks! u just basically have to read the book and understand everything in depth by yourself. his class is really just a waste of time. and the midterm WAS hard, and the final is probably just the same
His teaching methods suck. If you get him you'd have to learn the whole book and by yourself, and classes are such a waste of time. He doesn't convey the message well and he leaves the everything in an ambiguous way. Drop him if you get him
Lecture seems to be a Q&A period. Make sure you have relevant questions to ask to stop other people from asking useless questions. He's too eager to get the class to participate. Very fun guy outside of class. Make sure you read the text well.
Lectures stink you're better off not going to class. The whole lecture consists of people asking questions and in my class asking questions way beyond the context of the course. Is intelligent but not very good at explaining and very disorganized.
His midterm is just hard that you never know what to put as answer.
Different teaching approach, very unorthodox. Does not give notes, does not tell class exactly what he wants. Leaves questions open-ended for students to figure out themselves. Requires that you know your stuff very well. Hard to predict.

One word: HORRIBLE! Does teach at all. We're not even going to cover one of the major units! And this course is a prereq for so many!
maybe if the class just shut up and listened they'd learn something. his midterms are hard, but the class is unwilling to learn because they are always talking. don't complain about bad marks when you don't put in the effort. he really is a nice guy
this is a first year bio class and for that reason very difficult. Did reading before class and prepared with my own notes but still ended up doing awful on the midterm--really hard!!strongly reccomend different prof for this course!!!!!!
This guy isn't a teacher. He's a joke. 1/3 of the course is ecology. 7 classes before final exam: "I don't think i have time to lecture ecology, nor did i ever wanted to. Just read the text" - adamson
worst prof ever, he just can't teach, he sucks
for those losers who think this guy's a good prof: you suck ups and for those who get this guy: RUN (unless you wanna struggle and be miserable)
He can't teach. What else can i say. HE's just the WORST PROF EVER!!!
Run away from him
his class is a complete waste of time. he is ambiguous and vague when it comes to everything: lectures, what to expect on exams, what to study for, etc. save yourself from suffering and drop this class if you get him.
he is super boring & his notes are useless... lectures are not worth going... mid & final are super hard: avg for mid was 50%!!!
Does not tell what he expects you to know and merely assigns chapters that are completely useless(eg.microbio chpt)VERY UNORGANIZED assignemnts are in piles with maximum entropy outside his officeUSELESS LECTURES=Q&A period, take notes?NO don't even at
Switch to another professor ASAP. Everyone gets a bad mark. Sometimes he "may" be friendly, but he is not a good lecturer at all since he barely "teach". You don't know what he expects from you!
He seems passionate about biology, but that doesn't make up for his lousy teaching. Lectures were poorly organised and no notes were given. Even though both exams (MT and final) were open book, they were extremely hard.
This is the worst prof I've ever had. RUN, RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He may be a nice person but the man cannot teach. Although I did ok in the course, I could have done SO much better.
Extremely Hard!!!!!!!No notes at all!!!!!!Unorganized lectures!!!!!!!!Boring prof!!!!!!!Run away from him!!!!OR you'll get a bloodly tough luck!!!!!!!!!!
His mid-terms and exam are super hard. He is gonna screw your overall grades. Switch to another Prof ASAP.
Adamson was terrible. He was unorganized, didn't hand back work, and made the course much harder than anyother section. He makes you read the whole friggin book and doesn't teach any of it. He doesn't keep appointments, he is rude, and he is a bad prof
He is a hard prof but tries to answer students' questions. However, he is never clear with his answer and just give us small clues, and wants us to find the answers on our own. we had to read the whole book by ourselves and the midterm was BRUTAL!!!!!.
horrible prof. doesn't teach at all. I feel I have a better time understanding my cat.Makes you read lots. Killer midterms, almost everybody fails. Tip: Manage your time during the tests, write as fast as you can, leaves no time for thinking.
Course itself is supposed to be easy, but he makes it the hardest first year course. Simply makes your life miserable. Half of the class didn't even show up to his class. This explains how useless he is at teaching. Just stay away from him!
Great guy and good teacher - but not for you if you're lazy and used to being spoon-fed. Asks students to use their brains and treats you like an adult, thus many can't handle it.

WORST PROF EVER<<< i wish he talked about usefull stuff in classes instead of bull****
Good teacher - very approachable and seems to actually care about the students. Very funny too.
liked his teaching style - gives you clues but lets you find the answers yourself - a breath of fresh air from the usual rote-style teaching. Also a very nice guy and very good sense of humour.
His class was very confusing. He was using his 'cats' as an example and it was really boring. I depended on 'independent studying' and it helped! His homework questions were sort of helpful to understand some of the main points. His midterm was hard, but final was okay. :D
He really seems to understand that students are busy. His lectures didn't have a lot of structure, but since we were'nt required to memorize anything, it was okay. He let us chose to not have a midterm, and our final was a 5 page take home essay. AWSOME!!!!!
He's weird, but I liked him
Always skip his class, doesn't teach and tells students to read on their own -_-
He seems like a nice guy, but he goes off topic quite often and makes the class very restless.
I found professor Adamson to be very condescending when students asked him questions. He is not helpful, he did not tell us the outline of the midterm or give any practice questions. I would not recommend this course to anyone unless you have learned all of the stuff before. He tries to convince you how nice he is, but he is not nice,& not helpful
His midterm and marking was horrible!! Did not help students to be prepared for midterm.
He's really helpful even in a classroom of 200 students. He may be tough at marking but you really have to be stupid to do really bad at his class
He expects you to learn on your own. You need to do the reading beforehand or during the week that you're studying the material. For tests, he gives you a range of material to study, but no sample questions. I found his marking very generous...I figured I'd failed the midterm but got 75%. All in all he's a good prof but you need to do your reading!
Lectures are more like discussions, impossible to take notes. Expects you to read the text beforehand. His MTs and Final were quite easy; they were open book and most questions just ask you to write a cohesive paragraph with the 5 words given. DON'T do the bonus assignment, suppose to help scale down the test, but he marked those really hard.
This course required quite a bit of effort for the lab. The final essay was not very difficult if you kept up during the year and knew stuff from lab. Although the lectures were impossible to copy into notes...it didn't really matter so long as you paid attention and understood the material for incorporating into the final essay. Awesome class
He likes to go at his own pace, and doesn't and may/maynot get through all the material. This is bad when there is a general final. He tries to present the material in a fun way but can't. Furthermore, he is really ambiguous as to what he expects from the class and doesn't give practice midterms/finals.
he's a nice guy but the man just can't teach! he marks quite hard and doesn't provide you with anything to prepare for the midterm and final. he goes off topic in class A LOT and assumes you've read the whole text. you're probably better off teaching yourself this course.
All the other comments about this guy are true. Yes He IS as bad as they say. My only word of advice, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. In all other classes my grades were As and Bs in his class I had a C- and its not because I didn't study.
I don't know where to start. First of all, his midterms ask questions that have NEVER been seen before; Second - He's stubborn and impolite with sutudent who ask questions. I got 54% on his midterm and went to ask questions just to get pretty much made fun of in his weird power-hungry, condescending manner. Lectures boring and stuffy. Hate him.
He has a giant belly button. A horrible professor that lectures on useless crap that isnt on midterms. Has a stupid 'guess method' that he uses and eosnt tell the students utnil after midterms when they see negative marks on their tests. He needs to shave.
don't even go to class. just read the textbook
Love the animal t-shirts...so cute. He definitley shows his passion for the material but I hardly learn anything during lecture.
I honestly usually read the comments people say about profs and feel bad for them, but all of these comments are true and quite nice considering he is probably the worst professor in the world. In my other bio I'm getting 98%, get failing his class... Hmm, maybe its not the students Dr.Adamson, maybe it's YOU
Adamson is the worst professor I've ever had. All of these ratings are true. Count yourself lucky if you're reading this prior to enrolling in his class. If you're already enrolled, all you can do is commiserate. This man is why tenure should not exist.
It is pathetic that UBC keeps Adamson on staff when there are more knowledgeable, professional, talented young biologists available. He is completely out of touch with what his responsibilities are, the 2nd worst professor I've ever had - the worst one ever was removed after we filed a petition to the department, and I may do the same for Adamson.
Skipped all of his classses and got a high mark; he was helpful outside of class and responded well to questions but had no organizational ability and forced his students to rely heavily on the textbooks. There were no assignments or additional information, and it was vague on what he was testing us on. He didn't even know what chapters to read!
Horrible, horrible, horrible. Thats all I can say. His power points are pathetic, it consists of one sentence in huge font and a whole bunch of pictures. Doesn't have practice exams, and has this weird score calculating system. He basically just tells you to read the text book for the course. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
Other students dont understand him. His belly button is big for a reason...it talks andin clear useful sentences.
nice guy to speak with but don't expect to get much out of lectures. go for a general idea of what he's teaching. read the chapters assigned!!! best advice. and beware of M/C questions! i lost 8% on the first midterm because he gave penalties for wrong answers. something he didn't tell us about! it is fairly easy to get a decent mark tho
Notes are extremely bad, had to rely on textbook 99% of the time, definitely read the text book. But do try to listen to what he says and how he explains things, pretty good oral explanations. Tests are very fair, but does take marks of for wrong m/c answers. No practice questions of exams. But nice person.
if you have him, just don't bother going to classes and start reading on your own. His lectures are so boring and fruitless. Class average is really low compared to other bio 121 classes, and trust me, you wouldn't know what to expect for midterm and final (though the final was slightly better).
Dr. Adamson is pretty crazy but he is a genius! He knows everything about everything, first years are just too bratty and inexperienced to notice. The grading scheme he used for Parasitology pretty much guarantees you an A. The lab is a lot of work though.
Passionate about parasites. I no love them too. He gas favorite students and that is also reflected in essay grades. Do well on the midterm to suck up for the paper.
He's really not that bad. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. He definitely isn't the most organized teacher but he's very engaged with the students and is more than willing to answer any questions. You will definitely have to read the (expensive!) textbook for this class but those who are complaining: suck it up.
If you can, by all means avoid him. He makes the course SO dry, and talks about the most random things ever that don't pertain to the course material whatsoever. He laughs at his own jokes, which aren't funny at all, and are completely irrelevant. His marking scheme is terrible. You can learn more by not going to his class.
He's not the most organized of people, but he's very entertaining. As long as you compare his lecture slides to the relevant material in the text, the exams are a breeze. People who do poorly on his exams underestimate the difficulty based on his light-hearted personality and don't study thoroughly enough.
You do have to work hard in his class. The textbook is essential. However he gives lots of opportunities to check your understanding, has lots of exam review sessions, extra credit assignments and emails practice questions. Not a bad prof overall, and does care about your learning, but as in all big classes you have to be proactive to do well.
Avoid. I went on here, disregarded the comments and stayed in his class. Huge mistake.
He is probably not the most organized of professors. But I really enjoyed him, and the material we learned in class. He also really cared about the students, he tried his best to give us all the best marks possible by looking over our first midterm at the end of the term and gave us tons of practice questions.
Enjoyable, but scattered points and clarity isn't always there. Read the book to support his lectures.
He is a really enthusiastic professor, and he cares about every student for even small things. His lecture may not be really organized but if you pay attention you will still learn things. Read the book is also important too.
Easy proff a lot of optional stuff.
Often seems scattered in this class lecture points. I often grew tired in this class since he didn't engage me. He is enthusatic about what he teaches which is nice. Would recommend doing readings before classes and after since I found it more useful. Genetics part of this section I found difficult but the rest seemed reasonable.
This professor is thought provoking and interesting. Most young, first year students in this course, however, spend most of their time texting and on FB, so they do not get much out of the course and find it hard. Sit near the front, pay attention, do readings, suspend judgement and you will enjoy this professor a lot.
His lectures are a bit "disorganized" because he skips over parts of the textbook. His course outline was really helpful he's a pretty easy marker for the essay I got in his class. He's super helpful if you go to his office hours and have a good question. Go to his lectures because they focus on what's on his exams.
Professor Adamson was an amazing professor. Read your text book and go to class, be an avid listener and you'll thoroughly enjoy the course and the professor. He knows alot about what he teaches and is really there for the students to give you the best education possible. Passionate and helpful.. what more can you ask for?
extremely random!! he was very nice, willing to answer your questions whenever, but he never understands what the students are actually ASKING and rambles on and on. the two days where the TA's taught the class was probably the most interesting and helpful two days of the whole course.
I loved Martin's philosophical and political take on biology. I always enjoyed his lectures and learned a lot beyond the scope of BIOL 121.
Professor Adamson is extremely enthusiastic about biology! However his enthusiasm causes him to constantly go off onto irrelevant tangents, which made it hard to decipher what was information we had to know. He did not provide any sort of syllabus or course outline, we only found out the midterm dates by students asking in lecture 3/4 times.
His lectures are rather insipid (and if I had not slept well the night before, the following day's lecture would seem physically and mentally draining). Having said that, he can be pretty humorous sometimes. By the way, he loves talking about Carl Marx. Overall, just read the textbook and you'll get a good mark.
Worst first year bio prof, take his rating heavily into account
He is extremely random.... He doesn't give out any lecture notes like what other profs for Biol does.....! His class is extreamly boring too... I gave up going to his classes half way in to the term...
He was passionate about the material, but it was a poorly structured course. No midterms, only papers. No directions or guidance was provided for the essays. Doesn't reply emails. This course is not a GPA booster.
Super passionate about his subject - really interesting to attend his lectures if you pay attention. Exams were really easy too; everything on them was talked about in class, and all the powerpoint slides were posted online. For additional clarity/reinforcement it was useful to skim the textbook, but you don't have to for a good mark in the course.
If you make sure to attend all his classes, pay attention, do all the textbook readings (this is a must), and study/review the fundamental concepts prior to midterms/finals, you should do well in his course. The guy is hilarious and passionate, and very helpful in office hours. Oh, and do practice problems for the genetics midterm.
Very enthusiastic about the subject. The course is easy enough (just memorize the textbook) that you honestly don't need him to explain anything to you. With that said his seemingly off topic tangents don't negatively affect your learning but help you get interested and remember the course material. If you struggled in this class bio isn't for you
His lectures were somewhat boring, but paying attention in class helped. He was super enthusiastic and although the grade was based on the midterms and final only, he also had an extra assignment for bonus marks. Overall, he was a good prof
Don't listen to the first years below who had him for 121- Martin's super chill and great for upper-year courses where you actually know how to learn on your own. It's true it can be hard to take notes in his classes but assessment is weighed heavily towards assignments, not exams, and he's very willing to help you out.
I've had him for both 121 an 328. Liked him much better in 328 although his teaching style is pretty much the same, he gets more say in the material you learn for 328 and themarking scheme, so he pretty much just wants you to try your best and learn something about parasites. You realize he's actually a crazy genius though
Notes are not that important in this course, and he does mention that. Very passionate and informative of the history of biology. I would say that the marking scheme for some assignments aren't very clear, but he is a generous marker and is very willing to help with clearing up any misunderstandings. Really wants students to succeed!
Worst. Prof. Ever. Will spend entire class on two lecture slides about God. Constantly going on tangents that are often inappropriate (strippers in Paris?). No tests, just assignments, but he gives absolutely no guidance and grades ridiculously hard. There's honestly no point in going to class except participation marks. What a joke.
Adamson was a weird prof. Got off topic al the time, but the class wasn't the hardest so I'm not exactly complaining. He's an old man with very strong opinions but I heard he was retiring so theres that. Pretty boring class overall.
