Very Thorough. Uses lecture, interactive group activities and listens to student's ideas. Most respectful!
Good prof, very knowledgeable. Uses a mix of powerpoint and lecture, much of it is repeated throughout the class, so you cant miss anything unless you sleep through the whole class. Class/group discussions get a little dull, but provide a nice break from lecture. I would recommend him to anyone and would take him again if given the oppertunity.
All around good guy. Extremely helpful, takes input from students. Test material is right from the notes, study guide is also helpful... so if you fail, then you're an idiot :) Seems pretty passionate about what he's teaching, and he's funny. Highly Recommended.
Marty is the man, he is a very understanding prof that understands that sometimes even the students need a break, i would reccomend Marty for any Geo class.
I highly recommend this instructor. He's understanding, wants students to succeed, fair, listens to concerns and questions, and relates his field experience to class material. Great personality, as well. Take his class if you get the chance.
This guy is a joke. He know's his stuff, don't get me wrong, but he has no idea how to teach a class. His lectures are way to involved for a 100-level class, not to mention his exams are ridiculous. He teaches the general idea of concepts but his exams were way to involved. I attended every class and have a 3.9 GPA and all I can say is, he sucks.
He might be good with some experience. But, test poorly written. Class way to involved for a 100 level class. As someone else said he's a joke.....
The first third of the class was ridiculously hard.Too much material presented way too quickly.Research paper is a snap, just get it edited really well by someone reliable.Study hard for the tests and take detailed notes. Book was expensive, and we hardly used it.He is a nice guy, but this class was too hard for a 100-level and non-science person
A newer professor; sometimes seems unorganized. Ask for help and he'll certainly give it to you. Grades fairly except for research paper-grades ridiculously harsh on it!
Professor Arford is s good professor, he tended to be a little nervous when first teaching the class. He is a descent grader, you just have to really study for his exams. I would recommend him as a teacher.
Way too hard for a 100 lvl class. I couldn't believe all the stuff we had to do in the first 3rd of the class. Research paper is to be expected for a CI class, but 10 pages!!! WTF. If your not a die hard science geo. geek, don't take him. Turned me off from the subject.
This class is super easy! Just follow the lecture and you're fine. The paper is a little much but come on people it is a CI course. If you think this class is difficult, I'm afraid to see what you think of 300 level classes.
He is a great guy and knows his stuff, he is a new teacher so he lets a lot of things go but really nice guy and you will learn your stuff if you just follow his powerpoints

this guy is awesome! i totally love him! he's one of my favorite teachers!
He is very, very knowledgeable. When you take his class you WILL learn a great deal about geography for sure. His exams are reasonable, but still challenging. He is extremely helpful and approachable at all times. Great professor! Attend class (Don't miss), take good notes and study the powerpoints. Most of the exam comes from PPT and class notes!
This class was easy. I was really hesitant to take it during the summer, because I had heard it was difficult, but it was not a problem at all. He is interesting to listen to and has a lot of information to share. Sometimes he seems a bit nervous and that is a bit distracting. I think as he teaches more he'll get more comfortable!
He is a very nice prof. The class was fairly easy as long as you study for the tests. He gives a study guide and posts all of his power point presentations on blackboard. He has a lot of energy and really likes the material. I would recommend taking this class.
This guy really loves teaching and the subject of geography. Provides all help necessary and is very fair with his grading and helping you prepare. Recommend him highly for students of any level.
Good natured guy, very clear about whats expected. Lectures are way more important than reading. Impossible to keep up on the reading but you don't really need to if you go to class.
This guy definitel loves his subject matter. He gets very excited and is a little nerdy but in a totally funny way. The 10 page paper isn't that hard if you pick a good topic. I did an endangered species and it pretty much wrote itself. I would take a class with him again
Boring boring boring. Not worth it at all. He is a very nervous man and easily intimidated by people with opinions. Would never take him again. Rather watch paint dry.
The class was really easy if you did what was required and no more. His style is pretty cool in a funny way and he always makes jokes to keep the class going.
Dr. Arford is a wonderful professor. He is extremely helpful and gives you study guides for his tests. I thought the class was fairly basic and didn't have to study much as a result. The writing assignments are not bad at all. But Dr. Arford is one of SVSU's greatest.
He knows his material, but he uses 7 or more chapters of information for one exam. He teaches at real fast pace as well.
Great professor. Watch out for his tests: his questions often don't *quite* match up with what he lectures on or what's in the book. Covers a lot of material. Still, he makes a somewhat dull topic fun and he's a funny guy. And he's usually pretty fair. I wish I could take the class all over again!
Awesome teacher! I took him for 202! and 201 and loved every minute. Just print off study guides and write down answers on there - no need to even take notes! Don't buy the book-you don't need it. He was really funny and just a overall nice guy. Very willing to help you out and give you extra credit if you need it.
Dr. Arford was the greatest professor I've had so far at SVSU. His lectures are long, but they are all relevant to the exams. He doesn't give a lot of pointless information. He has an incredible passion for geography. In my opinion, he is the number 1 geography professor. So take his class and be honored !!!!
incredible professor, couldn't have asked for a better one. He is FAIR. He gets to the point and lets us know what we need to know. He is understanding, he knows what it's like to be a student. He has a deep passion for geography. He's traveled all over the world. I loved going to class, he inspired me to appreciate geography.
Prof. Arford is a great guy. He is interested in what he is teaching. He is a bit weird but it is funny. He is really nice and willing to work with you. It is a lot of note taking though and his tests are on the notes and powerpoints. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Take him!
Professor Arford is very enthusiastic about the material. The class is difficult, but he will give you as much help as you need. He is a great professor.
Dr. Arford was a great professor. He was concerned with whether or not students learned the material. It really helps if you visit him in his office for help on exams. Also, email is a great form of communication. I barely ever used the textbook, most information comes from his PowerPoint slides.
This class was extremely hard. You had to study all the time. The assignments were time consuming. The prof was really nice and knowledgeable about this area.
Difficult class..and can I say BORING..learned absolutely nothing, dont waste your money on the book never used. Keeps you for full time, class was overall miserable!
DONT TAKE HIM... pretty good teacher, but EXAMS are pulled from the crack of his (&%$).. Without the exam grades I had a HIGH A but those darn exams didnt have anything to do with what was taught in the class or the study guide.
Dr. Arford was a good professor. Plenty of Xtra credit opportunities and for the one paper we had to write, we had 3 months to do it. Textbook is useless, Print off the study guides on VSPACE and you'll be perfectly ok for exams. Puts all his power points on VSPACE so you can print prior to class.
Ehh decent teacher. Had a tendancy to rush through the material in lectures but if you study youll do fine. He provides study guides for each of his 3 exams. Final is not cummulative which was really nice.
By far the best professor I have had at SVSU and I have completed over 150 credit hours. He is humorous, caring, and attentive. He does hold you the entire class period. Use the study guides and you will do just fine on exams. Don't get the book though; it is pretty useless if you use the study guides.
Decent teacher but dosent really know what hes doing, often appears really nervous in class and gets sidetracked very easily, I wouldnt take the class if I could go back, Exam material is not very well covered
Very fair professor. Allows opportunities to approach and learn if you are serious. Power point is online and his tests are long but on the basics of what you should know when you leave his class. I will take him again.
GOod teacher. Easy to understand his way of teaching. puts powerpoints online. Tests are easy if you study for them.
Easy going guy. Funny and keeps the topic interesting. We watched many videos so class was interesting. A lot of extra credit opportunities. Study the study guide, if you have a question just visit him in his office and he will answer all your questions. I wish he would offer more classes.
Prof Arford is extremely nice guy. I don't really like the subject of Geography that much, but Arford does his best to make it interesting. I really loved the in class group activities, it helped retention a lot. Oh and did I mention, he gave us opportunities for up to 30 extra credit points! If that's not awesome I don't know what is.
One of my favorite professors at SVSU. Puts everything up on VSpace for you and is willing to do a lot for you. Hands out a ton of extra credit which is never a bad thing. Watch a bunch of videos so class is a breeze some days. I highly recommend. him.
Difficult tests that generally covered 5 chapters. I found the subject really boring and dreaded class mainly for that reason. You don't need the book, he uses powerpoints. Advice: do the studyguides as you cover the chapters in class, see him in office hours (he's really helpful and approachable), and take advantage of his EC opportunities.
Arford is very interested in what he teaches and you can definitely tell. While sometimes class is boring he definitely grows on you. Tests are generally easy if you look over the study guides that he puts up on vspace. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Arford truly loves his subject. His class is very easy. He passes out study guides, has the powerpoint online. He is slow to grade. He shares a lot of information and likes it when students share their travel experiences.
He is not too bad. His study guides are extremely helpful. Do not need the book at all. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! I did, never opened it. He's an easy grader. He wants you to do well in the class. Just take notes on what he writes on the board/what is not in the powerpoint.
Arford is a great professor! I would recommend him to anyone. He gives out study guides for every chapter and is a fairly easy grader. Teaches off of powerpoints so you don have to take as many notes. He also offers extra credit near the end of the semester!
Paying attention to lectures and reading the text prior to class are essential to doing really well in the class. It is kind of boring content, but Prof. Arford is a good professor. If you struggle with the content, he offers a lot of extra credit, so don't shy away from the class. It is informative. Anyone complaining just wants an easy A.
This is class is very hard, the hardest class I have taken so far, and I'm a junior. This workload in this class is ridiculous for a 100 level course. This class overall is terrible. However, Professor Arford is very helpful and tries to do everything he can to make things easier. I am not a big fan of this class.
He describes the course information well, but when it comes to papers, he is a ridiculously hard grader. I got a 38% on a paper that he himself said was well written. He said it was because it was shorter than he required. 38%?!?! And never miss class, or you will get a ZERO for attendance, even if you are a great student.
His lectures can sometimes be boring but it is an easy class if you study. Just listen to everything he says in class and take notes. Do not buy the book, it was a waste of money
Dr. Arford was a confusing professor to me. His powerpoints were cluttered and it was unclear what he would be testing us on. That being said, he was always in a great mood and willing to help people in need.
Professor Arford is a pretty cool guy, his exams are tough, and hardly anything on there is on the study guide. Do NOT buy the book, you will not use it at all. He cracks jokes but no one laughs. He's real nice and helpful.
Arford is a very nice guy. His lectures can be boring, but if you pay attention, you will do fine in the class. Attendance is mandatory. Do not buy the book, you will never need it. He does not require that you buy one.
Arford is a great professor. Probably one of my all time favorites here at SVSU. His lectures are interesting and engaging. He assigns a few writing assignments, but they are pretty easy. Did I mention he is probably the best looking geography professor!
In class he acts like his exam will not be hard but, when the exam comes there is questions that he said would not be on there and does nothing about it. the class is not hard but when he says to "cross something off the study guide" do not because he probably did not review the exam and take it off. His exams are a mix of multi choice and written
Good professor, explains things very clearly. Uses powerpoints, draws pictures on the board to help understand, and a lot of interactive diagrams. Great class, good teaching style, would recommend for an easy Communication Intensive Course.
Pretty easy for a writing intensive course. His exams can be a little bit trickier if you don't study, but if you follow the study guides (which you can print off before each class) and answer the questions on those, you'll do just fine. He does offer a few extra credit opportunities, up to 10 points, and the exams aren't accumulative.
Arford seems like a really great person, but I didn't enjoy his class at all. The information taught in class usually wasn't everything needed for the exams which were pretty hard, if you do the study guides it helps a lot. He often had to ask students information because he didn't know it himself.
I hated this class. Lectures werebrokng and he had unrealistic expectations for exams. A lot of the material was not discussed. The answers to the study guide are rarely actually in the notes so if you miss him say that answer than good luck finding it. He was very unorganized and had an excuse for everything. I would not take him again.
Professor Arford is one of the best i have had in a long list of teachers. His lectures are truly amazing and his delivery of information is spot on excellent. On top of that he cares about his students, engaging them into the class and discussion whenever he gets a chance. 10/10 would recommend again.
Professor Arford is a very nice guy. However, he really jumps around when he is lecturing. His study guides will be your best friend, but as some other have said, if you miss something in lecture, you will not be able to find that answer ever again. I personally did not get the textbook because he said he doesn't even use it.
Dr. Arford was good professor, geography is not interesting to me and I didn't feel like I was constantly falling asleep in class. If you do the work and take good notes it's an easy class. I don't like how he writes on the board in random order, then goes through 20 powerpoint slides to add onto what he already said. Made my notes very unorganized
Word of Advice: Open the study guide as a word document and take your notes from that.(Or Print and use it as a note guide) He's very passionate about Geography, but lectures are all over the place, switching between powerpoint and writing on the board. He doesn't write a lot of stuff down, so you'll have to take good notes. (Follow study guide!!
Prof. Arford is nice and funny. I loved his class and would definitely take again. Study for his tests though!
Prof. Arford was very funny and helpful. You do not need your book. Exams are somewhat tough but if you study you will do fine. Map quizzes are easy points.
Don't buy the book, he lectures off his own powerpoint and only very rarely refers to the textbook. if you don't attend classes you'll be lost. he will tell the class that if you are not a science major you will have a hard time, this is very true. he is unorganized and lectures from one the white board and on the powerpoint, very irritating.
Arford was not bad for a CI class. He explained the material well and the test material was predictable based off of study guides. Grading on the writing assignments was easy. Do not buy the textbook, never even opened it.
Print the study guides and fill them out while hes lecturing. His exams come straight from the study guide, so its a really easy class if you do that. He has map quizzes a couple times a week that were easy if you study. If you skip a lecture, youll never find the info you missed, doesnt use the book at all
He's a pretty decent professor. Brought up a lot of real life examples which was cool. If you do the work, you'll pass no problem. The tests are actually quite detailed so prepare accordingly. Also, you will have map quizzes, do not forget about them and study early for them
Great professor. Do not buy the book, he only uses slideshows to teach. Make sure to go to class because he'll bring up things that are on the study guides that are not on the slideshows. He provides the slideshows and study guides to you on Canvas. Would 100% take him again
Professor Arford is very passionate at what he does. He has a lot of world travel experience which he implements throughout lecture and his slideshows. He knows what he is teaching, but doesn't necessarily know how to teach it to someone who is learning it for the first time. Doesn't go in enough depth. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. JUST PAY FOR ACCESS CODE
He lacks organization in his power points, he came to class very unprepared and hasn't updated his slides in years. He needs to take more time preparing before class. Overall, easy class just did not like his unorganized teaching style.
Dr. Arford is a good guy and very passionate about the subject. Some of his power points were unorganized but it wasnt too bad. He assigned alot of papers but if you followed the rubric youll be fine. Hes a solid professor overall.
So far one of my favorite professors at SVSU. He is extremely understanding and is always willing to help or explain. I am not interested in geography whatsoever, but he made the class quite interesting. His exams are exactly what you learn in class. MY BIGGEST RECCOMMENDATION- fill out every study guide and you will be golden for the exams!
We were required to purchase the access code, but only completed 3 chapters of the homework assignments on there instead of the 20. So it was kinda a waste of money. Two of the exams were online w/ notes, final was in person w/o notes. The class was ok, wouldnt really want to take it again though.
Dr. Arford is a super nice guy and truly cares about what he teaches. He loves when you participate, and he really wants his students to succeed. He was a little scattered somedays. Do the study sheets and you'll be just fine!
He is nice but so unorganized, his lecture slides have no organization. There are 5 1-page papers and then 1 10-page paper, he gives good feedback on the first couple of pages but nothing at the end. He talks about this he will not be on exams (he states this) and barely talks about things that will be on the exam, I wouldn't take him but good luck
Professor Artford is a nice and kind man with a good personality. He is not a very affluent professor. He seems very disorganized and a lot of material on tests were only briefly touched on in class. It seems we learn a lot more about history than geography. The tests and homework are not super challenging but it is hard to find the right info.
Professor Arford seems to really care about his students, but this does not help much at all when it comes to tests and the assignments. The study guides were useful, but too much on the study guide to barely be on the test. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and you only get one "freebie." Exams are the hardest part of this class.
Long 6 page research paper but is very easy. Exams come from the short answer on study guides but are very hard to remember all the information. Overall easy if you just put in a few hours a week to do the study guides.
He is extremely nice and friendly but he was such a touch grader and would never give anyone one 100% on the writing assignments that he gave us weekly. The exams were tough as well as the best grade through all of them was less than 90.
Super hard grader, it seems that no matter how much effort you put into papers he will find a way to mark you down. Grades super hard on sentence structure and grammar with no apparent way to help you fix it. His tests are very difficult and often asks about material that was never covered.
Professor Arford had very content-heavy and long lectures, but the exams were very easy to study for since they were exactly what was on the study guides. There were a lot of homework assignments online, but he graded pretty reasonably. He was flexible and would open old assignments back up if you asked him. He always answered questions clearly.
A very sweet and kind man. I personally have not done the best in the class, but its mostly my fault. He did require an online textbook, but it doesnt seem super essential. The exams kicked my butt, but that might just be a me issue. I recommend him if you are really passionate about Geography.
Dr. Arford is a very flexible professor who loves what he does! His class is content-heavy, and the lectures can get boring sometimes, but the exam questions come straight from the study guides, and he is super helpful if you ask questions. He uses real-life experiences in his teaching and loves it when students participate in class.
He is super nice and enjoys discussion in class. His exams aren't very difficult, and he has few online quizzes throughout the semester.
Lectures are kind of boring, but overall a good professor. Super easy class if you need elective credits. He gives study guides for each lesson and takes those questions and uses them for the exam. Homework assignments were short and easy. Sweet professor and cares about your success in the class. Overall, I would take a class with him again.
Professor Arford is very sweet and caring. He is very organized and knows what he's talking about and has personally been in many parts of the world. The only thing to complain about is the lectures sometimes can be a bit boring and make you sleepy. The Map quizzes I think are very fun, easy points, and good informative activities.
Professor Arford is probably one of the nicest teachers on campus, he's super easy to talk to and is willing to stay a bit late to ask any questions or concerns. The only negative on his part is he isn't very expressive with his lectures but he does care about the material and his slides/study are pretty well done. Take him for Intro!
One of my favorite professors at SVSU. Thoroughly thought out power points and lecture. Not many things graded but a great class to take with him.
He is a nice guy. He presents material off the slide every day and you could learn the same amount reading it at home by yourself. Overall the class is easy if you can memorize slides. Provides study guides, the same questions are on the exams. A few times this semester he marked down my correct answers on exams for no reason???
The actual material of this class is not hard by any means; it's just the amount that's covered and how quickly it's covered that makes it difficult. He's very sweet, but he will go through 100 slides at least in the 80-minute lecture. His exams are okay; the study guides he gives help, but it's only 50 questions and we cover 250+ terms each exam.
I really enjoyed the contents of this course, but the way he teaches in lecture makes it hard to engage. He grades your attendance but called out 4 days this semester (you can only miss 2 before losing points). Sometimes he's very vague, other times he's way too detailed. But he is the sweetest professor ever and if you show up, you'll be fine.
I love him, the sweetest soul ever. I had him for 101! and 201. He is SO willing to help and wants his students to succeed. His classes are very content-heavy, but if you study, you will do well. Take notes from his study guides and study that! At the end of 101! he gave a 15-point EC opportunity too!
