I accidentally rated him bad last time, but I meant to rate him really high

ok - knowledgable
Published fab course outline from which he solely teaches. Adhering to the outline makes him very boring. Doesn't relate/connect well to students during lecture. Needs to be more dynamic and use blackboard.

Worst prof. I've ever had...EVER!
This professor DOES NOT teach. He basically goes over the homework, not helpful at all. Retaking this class this summer with Phillip Powell. Much better teacher. Phillip actually teaches the material and explains everything. He is also willing to answer your questions!
I actually didn't mind his class. How ever boring accounting may be, I thought he was pretty good at teaching it.
Don't take him!
Absolutely awful professor. Did not care at all about his students and actually told my class that he doesn't care about our grades because he only controls the attendance grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
He does not teach the class at all. He gives lectures in the beginning and reads straight for the notes. The class would be much easier if you had a professor who actually teachs the class and explains the material. He curves the test so big that if you are failing you still pass. If at all possible find another professor for ANY accounting class.
After four years of college I can safely say Birr is the worst professor I ever had. I think he is just there to pick up a pay check and hope he can talk about the Cubs with some fellow fans. If I wanted to talk about baseball, I would go have a beer with my friends, not pay to go to an accounting class.
Great professor! Explains things in good detail which is something that is not often seen with accounting professors at Kelley. The man really knows his stuff.
If you like sports talk and want to work hard on your own with NO help from the prof, take BIRR. Otherwise, avoid like the plague, he is not a good prof..my only C! awww
I'm not entirely convinced Professor Birr knows what he is talking about, on ANY subject. Asking questions might as well be posed to his secretary for how helpful he is. All he talks about is the baseball (or any sport for that matter) so if you're a fan, enjoy your A. If not, suggestion: learn what you can on your own. This guy shouldn't teach
AWFUL! If you enjoy learning on your own and having a prof ask a question and answer it himself before letting anyone figure it out, take Birr. Otherwise stay away! He does absolutely nothing from his own, it's all straight from the chapter problems, and he doesn't TEACH anything. He doesn't even explain what he's doing while he's doing it. AWFUL!
He strolls into lecture at least five minutes late, talks about sports and the like, and is simply lazy. He blows through the notes and treats the material like the students should know it already. He is the worst professor I have ever had. Out of many students I have talked to, he is liked by two of them and they are both brown-nosers.
I have had 'Marty' for a lot of classes, and when I got there, I really couldn't stand him, my opinion has changed. I am about to graduate, and I realize now that he is the way he is because he gets so many courses to teach, he literally doesn't have the time to be hands on. He has helped me more than I could ever write here. See him in the MBA?
Have to admit he's reading his notes all d way but he got better by solving some problems from the book. He teaches better i must say. Sometimes he gave us attendance quiz. WooHoo!! 100 pts for juz coming n take d quiz. :D
You are better off not to take his class, if you want to really understand the topics you are supposed to understand. Too expensive as a self-study course, which this class is like. Class covers very important topics but teaching doesn't worth the investment. I paid $1,500 for this self-study course. Don't make a bad investment decision.
He treats students as if they are beneath him, even during office hours. I believe that he does not care about the success of his students.
Reads the notes quickly in class.Might work a few problems on board if his cell isn't buzzing to much. Doesn't like questions, and DO NOT show up at his office. After all he is teaching at IU-B and running a business on the side. You definitely know teaching you is not his first priority!
I have had this professor for several core classes in my accounting undergraduate program. Will not take time to adequately teach material. He tries to cover everything in every chapter instead of letting you read the easy stuff and then practice the difficult items in class. Ok to have a beer with, terrible teacher. His class, you're on your own.
You need to know any pre rec. accounting skills perfectly. Then the class is easy.
Not a very good professor. Rambles on about right wing politics. Explains absolutely nothing. Professor Hassell is by far the best. Just lectures from notes, utterly useless.
Professor Birr is a serious professor, and he does not suffer fools gladly. If you are looking for a class that you can just "get through," this is not the one for you. On the other hand, if you appreciate a stern professor(and you either agree with his politics or can ignore them), Birr's class might be for you. I actually enjoy it.
If you get less than a C+ in Martin's class, you won't pass the CPA anyways.
If you want to be a CPA, take Birr's class and be ready to put in the time. If you are just getting an accounting degree because it coincides with finance, find another professor.
He told the class on day one to study the Gleim - a supplemental book that prepares you for his tests. Take his advice. Although it's a lot of work, you'll do fine on the tests if you study hard
I thought he was interesting and helpful. He is like a walking book on the CPA exam, quite impressive. Would take him again, for sure!
I enjoy Professor Birr. His classes are always interesting. He's pretty funny and really knows what he is talking about. He expects students to know their stuff, but more professors should. To do well in this class, study the Gleim book. If you can answer those questions, you will do well on the test.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He never responds to emails about grades or questions. He doesn't teach anything in class, but if you don't go to class he fails you or gives you really low grades. Took him for one other class and hated him, but due to scheduling issues was forced to take him again. Don't ever take his class!
Awful!!! He shouldn't teach. You actually learn nothing from him. In his class, you are completely on your own. He can't teach.
Getas many issues of the Gleim you can- almost all his tests are out of this book. If you want to understand the information as well as get a good grade you will also need th read and study the book.
What makes a good teacher is not simply knowledge of material, but his/her ability to convey that knowledge and structure lesson plans that aid student comprehension. On this front, he fails miserably. You can tell he's an overall well-meaning dude who knows accounting, but when it comes to actually teaching, he is completely inept. DO NOT TAKE!
He is very knowledgeable on any accounting topic and keeps us with FASB changes. However, he is unable to teach students. He simply reads from the slides or provided lecture notes in class. He copies and pastes test questions from Gleim for exams. You will not learn from him and will have relearn everything when you sit for the CPA exam.
I sympathize with him because this is a tough course, being a mandatory weed-out class. I learned very little from class meetings due to the (necessary) pace. Finals week, I spent 20 hours studying the Gleim material (the key to success) and ended with a B in the course. He isn't an effective teacher, but he's fair if you put the outside hours in.
I enjoyed him. He is one of the most knowledgeable teachers regarding accounting. his classes are designed to make you learn, and you need to learn a lot on your own. but i found i learned more from him than any other teacher. slackers will fail.
Although Professor Birr's class is difficult, if you speak to him outside of class he is very helpful. The people that find him challenging and say he "can't teach" are those that probably do not read the material before hand and do not have a passion for Accounting. If you come to class prepared, you will understand the basic concepts.
Worst prof I have seen ever. He doesn't explain anything about his material, and he does give hard exams. He likes to give low scores (so he would show that he us teaching hard staff). seriously, that person doesn't deserve to be in IUPUI. I would advise you to don't take any class with him.
Professor Birr knows accounting (understatement - he is a genius at accounting) and he is very helpful outside of class. However, one of his "indirect" teaching points is self-discipline because you must be able to teach yourself a lot (if not all) of the material outside of class. Slackers do not belong in his classroom. Use the Gleim study book!
Professor Birr is extremely knowledgeable about accounting. His classes are not easy but if you pay attention in class and study you will do fine. He generally has a generous curve in his courses. He is funny and personable if you take the time to get to know him. However, he will call you out in front of the rntire class if you're unprepared.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Being a visitng student, I've never had such difficulty understanding a teacher. Much outside work will be needed to be done if you want a decent grade. Good luck being your own teacher with having this teacher
Professor Birr knows his stuff. He is an absolute accounting genius. BUT he does NOT know how to teach. He assumes we all already know the subjects & doesn't explain much unless we beg. Teaches us things that aren't even on the test, causing everyone to fail. Not recommended.
Professor Birr is the coolest teacher I've ever had in my 18 years as a student. I just finished my 3rd and final class with him and have enjoyed every minute. His classes are hard so don't expect an easy grade. He prepares his students to pass the CPA exam the first time around NOT get a 4.0 to help you get an internship.
This instructor is very knowledgeable about everything to do with accounting. He can answer almost any question accurately and clearly. His tests are very difficult and will require a lot of studying. Buy the study guide and use it a lot even though he never uses it in class. Many test questions come from the study guide book.
I do not recommend Prof. Birr, he starts class everyday talking about the latest sports updates. He strays from topic causing things to be confusing. He uses the book sometimes when he wants to give an example problem, but not much besides that. He lectures with out much guidance. He tends to just ramble on and on throwing things that comes to mind
Professor Birr is one of the best one I have had At Kelley school of business. He is passionate about his subject which the class more interesting.
If you work and go to school full time DO NOT take him. It requires a ton of outside work and he expects you to learn on your own. He just gave hw problems in class and never gave us a chance to show what we were struggling with. Boring and very difficult.
He treats you like an employee. Most concepts were breezed through, but this is a hard class. The life skills this prof brings to class more than makeup for his shortcomings. This man served on the ethics committee for Indiana during the Enron scandal, and is a referee for D1 sports. 201 is a hard class, don't expect any teacher to be better.
I do not understand why he teaches in excel if we cannot use that on the test. Professor Howard is easier to learn from simply because he uses pen and paper. I can not use excel on the test so why the hell are you teaching me in it? AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Doesn't teach, only reads material and talks about sports.
Professor Birr is amazingly knowledgeable in Accounting. His teaching style is not for everyone, you feel as if you are teaching yourself. But, if you read the book, review and practice his lecture notes and as many book problems as possible before class, you will be successful. He gives ample opportunities to ask questions in class, take them!
Just don't. That should say enough about this professor.
Be prepared to invest a LOT of time to a class, and potentially only squeak out with an "ok" grade. While Birr is an awesome guy, and very fun to talk with about sportsetc, his class is difficult. The subject material is not hard, but the way the exams are structured and worded is. You will need the book, and make sure to do all your homework.
He assumes you know the information and are taking the course as a "refresher"... He degrades his students and is too prideful to accept that he makes mistakes. 0/10 would not recommend.
Listen. This class and A202 are the classes that weed out before Kelley. I've taken every single class before entry to Kelley and A201 was by far the hardest. Mr. Birr does his best to teach the material, but to be honest, it's just plain hard. I wish he wouldn't use Excel and he actually showed the math behind things, but that's my only gripe.
Avoid at all costs. Only there to pick up a check, could not care less about your success in the class. Very arrogant, condescending man with a false sense of pride. Refuses to admit when he's made a mistake.
Prof. Birr is a very nice guy & very knowledgeable. This class is HARD & will require A LOT of YOUR time. He does NOT give study guides & he expects you to do all the homework exercises, review lecture problems, the weekly quizzes & also practice the Gleim Book. If you Do NOT procastinate & work hard, you may slide with a B or C thanks to his curve
As long as you've reviewed the chapter Birrs chapter is east to follow. I never used to follow his chapters but if you read the book then read the content and practice the gleim and the textbook you will score great but his practice problems are great for the exams too
Birr knows the field and what he's doing. If you're pissed you have to study on your own get over it or you'll never pass the CPA exams... I know from experience. Nobody tells you what's on the exam or how to study, if you take the time to learn the info you'll succeed. If you study as he said you'll earn a C+ or B, which is fair.
Prof. Birr is great. His class is hard because accounting is hard. If you read, show up to class, ask questions, and pay attention/actually try, you will pass probably with a B+ maybe an A. Sometimes he might seem condescending, but it's not really bad at all after the first 3 ch. He's funny. Just read and study. Yes or no? :)
He does not know how to teach. You will be by yourself.
Great professor. Many people seem to not like him, but I feel as though they are just very frustrated with the difficulty of the class. He is good at explaining and constantly asks if anyone has questions. Would definitely take him again.
Worst prof I've ever had. Ignores emails, 10+ minutes late to class (yet lectures about "professionalism"), every quiz/lecture has errors. He often makes mistakes trying to solve problems on the board and his students have to help him out. 1/3 of class time is him talking about nothing act related. Very condescending. Get ready to teach yourself!
This professor is awful. He expects you to read the whole book and then the assignment is to prepare Q&As along with explanations by yourself and do a paper memo To explain a topic from this semester. So, literally the professor has not put any effort in teaching for this class. ridiculous. All he did is to come online and explain general topics.
WARNING: Worst teacher I've ever had do not take his class
Impossible to follow. Very easy to get off topic. Will make numerous mistakes and not realize It till the end of the twenty minute question. Would never take again.
Overall Professor Birr was a good professor. A201 is a very hard course, but he knows how to explain the information well. The only issue I have is that the exams are written and taken with another professor. There were lots of differences between how the test was written and the way he taught us. Wish he wrote his own exams.
Most people on this forum only provide good reviews for professors who give out easy A's or just have an easy class. This class is supposed to be hard. Professor Birr is well versed in all phases of accounting. He extended homework and exam due dates if he felt it was too soon. Stop whining. I am a better student because of this class. Very fair.
Class is hard, but Birr really cares about his students and helping them learn. Study tons outside of class, and use the lectures to synthesize the information.
Martin Birr is hands down the best professor I have had. Extremely knowledgeable and always there for his students!!!!!
No. No. No. I walked into class the first day and listened to him talk for an hour and a half about "things we should already know" and a pop quiz at the end. I was not prepared for his level of expectation. Right after that class period ended I walked into advising and dropped it. Would not recommend if you're someone who can't learn like that.
Birr is very strict and doesnt care about weather you pass or fail. All his EXAMS 1,2 and3 about 75% to 85% from GLIEM book questions. It comes with exact answers form GLIEM and somFrom his lectures note. All weekly quizzes from the book. DO NOT EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH BIRR. DO NOT SCREW YOUR SEMESTER WITH BIRR. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH BIRR.
He teaches only from doing examples on excel. Sure, you can whip out excel in class and for ONLINE homework, but what are you supposed to do when you have to take a huge exam with paper and pencil? Good luck. There are no real notes or powerpoints for reference.
Had this guy in two different classes, and I did bad in both. His does this thing where he goes from statement to question that makes you lose interest in hearing him speak, but you need to listen if you want to pass. You also have to read the chapters, take lots of notes, and do all the problems if you want to do well. 3Cr class with 9Cr workload.
Online was the only option and lectures were held twice a week. He used a different format during lectures than the homework and quizzes. He also seemed like he had an attitude when anyone asks questions. The tests were a higher level of difficulty than what was being taught with not enough time (you had about 2 1/2 minutes for each question.
I have never failed a class in my life. I was a direct admit to Kelley and I am by no means lazy. This professor was the worst i've ever had. His lectures are awful, he doesnt respond to emails, and curves your grade at the last second by 10%. Im tired of seeing comments on here saying if you fail you are just lazy. Take it with andrews, not birr.
Martin Birr is by far the worst prof I have ever had in my entire life. He shouldn't be employed. He teaches on Excel, with the functions and formulas pre-set, so we can't really see or understand what he is entering or where. And to top that off, we aren't allowed to use Excel ourselves on hw or exams. DO NOT TAKE ANY COURSE WITH MARTIN BIRR!!!!!
I would not recommend taking the class with this professor. The class itself is difficult, this professor makes it even harder. Lectures and homework were ok, but the tests were extremely difficult and didn't align with what we learned. It also felt as though he didn't care whether we failed or succeeded.
Say what you want about Birr but the guy is hilarious. His exams consist mainly of questions from Gleim. Lectures are typical. He knows his stuff. Although he may not be the greatest at teaching, he's pretty funny in a way.
Please take with any other professor available for course. Personally spent anywhere between 15-30 a week outside of class time studying and it is not enough. Tests are extremely hard and "tricky". Also, class time was ineffective because he does not follow book. If he does, I could not make the connection.
Prof Birr is one of the best professor I ever had in Accounting. I have taken 2 courses with him and would definitely be his student again. The course is tough and I had to study outside the class but accounting itself is not easy. He is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. Overall I loved his class personally.
Professor Birr is a great professor. The low rating people probably didn't attend his class, or are soft. He makes a lot of jokes and calls on people in class, but he makes it interesting. With him calling on you in class, it helps to keep you alert and prepared to answer. The lectures are great, but the exams are extremely difficult. Amazing guy.
Worst professor I have ever had. Has lecture notes that he just reads off of. Does not teach, I was better off teaching myself at home. He calls on students a lot, so if that bugs you he will definitely make you uncomfortable. Get the Gleim book, and use that to practice for the exams since a lot of exam questions come from Gleim.
Martin Birr is an excellent professor, well qualified, and extremely knowledgeable. He would keep his students on their toes, calling them out and asking for their opinions. He has a great sense of humor so you won't feel any boredom or laziness. He wanna raise the standard for accounting students and prepare them to be great business leaders.
Professor Birr is a solid professor, who is also the funniest professor at IUPUI. people tend to complain about him due to the difficulty of the class he teaches, if you are proactive, and do your work and put in the time outside of the classroom like he constantly recommends, you can and will be successful, especially after the curve hits.
Horrible professor. Avoid at all costs. He is funny at times, but is not good at teaching.
Professor Birr is the kind of guy I could knock back a few beers with. He's a personable guy and is also highly intelligent in the field of accounting. I don't know why Prof Birr gets a bad rep. He is a straightforward professor. He makes it clear that you are responsible for your own learning. Maybe people who complain about him are soft.
Great professor
This class is not easy. Be prepared to read the textbook, do the homework problems, and study Gleim. Its a lot of work, but there's no surprises on the exams. He prepares you very well, both for exams and outside the classroom, but he expects you to put in the time and work needed to succeed. He gets a bad rap, but he's a great prof.
This material & course load are tough, but that is to be expected of an accounting class. I knew it would be hard, but Birr is a great professor. He genuinely cares for his students, and he is pretty comical. You definitely have to do a lot of work outside of class, but he is always accessible and reachable, and I look forward to taking him again.
Birr is a very knowledgeable man but his teaching could be better. A lot of the work you do in any of his classes will be on your own and the exams are very difficult. Be prepared to put a lot of extra time into his classes, he does curve at the end of the year usually so there's that. Pretty fun and generous, but know what you're getting in to.
When the average grade in the class is an F, you have to wonder what you are doing wrong as a professor. Nice enough guy but a terrible instructor. Avoid taking any of his classes!
Yes, its lecture heavy but did yall listen? He uses real examples to connect to what we are actually doing in class and not a lot of professors do that. Yes, he was tough on us and the material is tough but thats to be expected if you want to be in the accounting field. Read the notes, read the textbook, and listen in class and you will do fine.
