GREAT professor. Really cares about the class and his students. He is young and pretty new to teaching, but is really great. He seems to want to help everyone and make sure everyone understands something before he goes on. He doesn't overload you with work, but you will learn A LOT in his class. Marty Cohen is a great prof. He is very knowledgable and a young guy so he talks on our level. You GOTTA read the text book though otherwise you'll screw up on the exams b/c his tests are mostly based on the text and not the lectures.Otherwise, easy class and the "term" paper is a joke (2-4 pages) but don't BS it.Lectures are kinda boring though

Amazing teacher, but above all just a great guy. Really laid back style of teaching, but still gets the point across very clear. Class is pointless because the notes are straight from Blackboard, but class is still good to go to for little things here and there. Exams are easy and the only bad thing is the mandatory movies for 4 credits.

This was my senior seminar, and I can't imagine having a better experience. Dr. Cohen is INCREDIBLY knowledgable and so easy to understand. He helps soooo much with the research paper (I was in there constantly) and he gets really excited about your work. And I agree with other posters--he's adorably nerdy and so much fun. :-) ONE OF THE BEST!!!

Great Prof, relatively easy class. One mid-term (15%), class participation (20%), term paper (30%), final exam (35%). There's a ton of reading, but it isn't necessary to read all of it. Do half the reading, fully participate in the class discussions and finish the research paper (10-15 pages) in earnest, you're guaranteed a B

So, the good. He makes lectures fun, plenty of chances to help your grade out, has good office hours, wants to see you succeed, teaches you like a peer, instead of as a student. The bad, tests are tricky, and are worth a lot. You do have to put in some time with him, but worth taking over the other teachers JMU offers. Recommended.

Dr. Cohen is great! He was incredibly prepared for class and would reference his notes to make sure he was on track. He has difficult exams yet he is very fair. If you go to class and read the readings you will do well and find it interesting. If you don't, you won't. I really enjoyed how fair he was.

He is funny and makes lectures enjoyable. His content is also usually pretty easy to follow as well. Although attendance isn't mandatory, everything he talks about in class is on the exams and as long as you are paying attention most of the time you will be okay. There is little homework with the exception of occasional discussions and films.

Professor Cohen is great!! I have taken a few of his classes and he is consistently one of my favs. The class is graded by only a midterm, final, and paper. The lectures are long but super engaging with the discussions throughout. Answer's emails quickly and always willing to help. Def take him for ANY political science courses if you can.

Professor Cohen's lectures can be hit or miss, but his exams are notoriously challenging. The textbook is often unnecessary, but attending class and taking diligent notes is key. I found using Unstuck study alongside other study tools like ChatGPT really helped me prepare.

Nice guy, but lectures could be boring at times. The tests were very hard only way to do good is if you don't skip and take good notes. Did attendance, but doesn't count towards you.

I did POSC225 freshman year as Gen-Ed. Overall, wouldnt really take again. Attendance isn't mandatory, no homework or quizzes- only 3 exams the entire semester. Exams are HARD. And very detailed and lengthy. If you are into government it might be OK for you, but as a health major I didn't enjoy as just wasn't my cup of tea. He's a good guy tho.

Don't take this class. Cohen gives mind-numbingly boring lectures, you are graded on only a few things so it's easy to tank your grade, even if you study the tests they are insanely tough. There are no redeeming qualities to this man, he runs an awful class which is embarrassing considering how long he's been doing it. AVOID.

Dr. Cohen is incredibly intelligent when it comes to political science. The class is graded off of 3 exams (including a final, not cumulative), 5 discussion board posts and two essays. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not pass unless you go. The tests are based off of lectures. Super nice guy. Answers emails quickly.

Show up to class and take notes if you want to do well. Attendance is not mandatory. He tries his best to make the class interesting and have class discussions. The test are difficult but the other assignments are easy. I'm sure if you enjoy gov then it will not be as difficult but make sure you study for the test!!

Very odd fellow. His lectures are interesting but that depends on the person and his tests are very complicated. Most of it goes outside of what he covers in class and some of the questions are very abstract.

The class has 3 long exams (50 MCQs + 2-3 FRQs) that are tough and mix material from lectures, textbook, and sometimes unclear content. He rambles and doesn't cover everything, so prior gov knowledge helps. Good professor overall, but not the best first choice.

super amazing professor. Tests are the only main thing that contributes to the grade however there are a few discussions throughout the semester that can bring your grade up. Additionally, participation is graded so that's an easy way to get points. The textbook we use is his own textbook which is a little strange esp bc he makes us purchase it.

Overall the class was fine, his lectures are kinda boring and only somewhat helpful. There are 3 exams that make up 75% of your grade the other 25% is from readings + quizzes that are super easy. He doesn't really exp;ain the material kinda just says it and can go off track a little during lectures.

Very nice guy and passionate about gov. Lectured every day of class. Attendance not mandatory but you miss stuff as slides don't cover in detail. Quizzes and shared writing were based on completion, added to a test. 3 actual tests, 50MC and short answer based on lectures/textbook. Prior knowledge helps. Would recommend if you enjoy government.

Dr. Cohen was very friendly and open to questions the whole year. The subject matter was very interesting and you were able to tell how passionate he was about it. Your whole grade was based off of three three exams and a paper, but he would help you as much as he could. Great class and a great guy.

This class is so interesting if you're into politics. Lectures can sometimes be boring but he encourages class discussions and dialogue throughout the class which make it really fun. Exams are easy if you understand the topics and pay attention. One essay at the end of the semester, overall pretty easy and only 10 pages. I def recommend this class!
