What a great professor. He was always on the same level as the students and I always enjoyed his funny anecdotes from the past. A highly highly recommended prof, a lot of U of A profs could DEFINITELY learn from him!! Tells you straight up that he's not here to trick you, everything is straightforward. Kudos Prof Davies!!!!
In all my years as a student I have never had a prof this great! He is funny and can relate easily to students and subject matter. He presents everything you need to know in a clear and precise manner. No tricks or confusion on his exams either! Seriously the best prof at the U of A.
Gotta agree with those below me! Professor Davies was incredibly entertaining... enough to convince to attend all of his lectures (despite it not being necessary). He tells lots of funny stories and his lectures are very interesting and presented in a fun way. Highly reccomended even if Pharm is not your thing at all... Hell, I'm in Arts!
Good prof, first time teaching the whole course though. The coursepack seemed very scattered with differing and varying amounts of info about each drug. Tests were too easy and the average was super high. Overall a good class though.
Awesome prof! He was very entertaining and really made it a fun class. The exams were multiple choice and very easy so the curve was high for such a big class.
Good, clear & funny prof which makes even boring lectures not that bad. Averages are always high so don't let the curve screw you over.
Hilarious prof who makes the material interesting and memorable using real life experiences. Also plays alot of funny videos which makes the class entertaining. Easy straightforward exams straight from the notes and provides good practise Q's. Very high class avg = awful curve though :(
Great prof...I actually looked forward going to his classes. He presented the material very clearly and his exams were staright forward. He was very funny....relates to students very well.
Hot, funny, and entertaining. He makes going to class a good time. Tons of funny personal stories and examples...very funny movie clips as well. Really enjoyed the class, seems to really enjoy teaching it. Again, high averages due to easy exams so bad curve :(
Probably the best lecture course I've taken at the University. Excellent prof, great material. The class was always packed and I'd bring friends in just to listen to him. Unfortunately the curve will kill you in this class. The average is above ninety.
hilarious!! he was very entertaining throughout the entire semester. his exams were very easy but the curve was horrid
I heart Martin Davies! Excellent prof! Funny, clear and never boring. It doesn't hurt either that he's quite good looking. He incorporates videos, and hilarious anecdotes to keep things interesting. Easily the best course I've taken at university. Best prof at the UofA hands down.
I LOVE Martin Davies! He is so cute, smart, quirky, and funny! Lectures are fun and interesting, he shows clips from Family Guy and stuff like this. Attending the class is not extremely necessary as the notes are pretty straight forward. However class averages are really high because the material is that easy...But great class and a great prof!! =)
The curve kills because the material's easy- competitive class. He's so hilarious, love this class.
Martin is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. Take this class if you're looking for some easy science credits. Any class we get to watch Family Guy, The Simpsons, and even an episode of Intervention is fine by me.
Class was very interesting, but the curve is just stupid. An 85 won't get you a B+. Material is very straight-forward. He is a pretty good prof, sometimes can be dry, but the cocaine/heroin/hallucinogen lectures are super interesting. If your looking for a GPA booster look elsewhere but despite that, for how interesting it was i would take it again
FANTASTIC prof. Martin Davies rocks my world. This class was great entertainment quality, Martin Davies is definitely on my wavelength.
The class was straightforward and kinda boring. He tells minor stories of his experience with the material sometimes. Overall the material was so easy that the class averages on the exams were ridiculously high. I would have rather had a prof who was more 'experienced' in the field. He seems like a big nerd.
The class was very interesting but the exams were pretty tricky! I studied alot and still messed things up on the midterm! Only one midterm and a final! He is a good prof though! He knows his information!
Its one of those classes where you wonder why the university doesn't do away with the curve when peoples grades can be made or broken with a few percent from each other. Still, he explained concepts clearly and the class material is actually interesting, I took it in the summer and the averages were definitely lower than during the fall/winter.
Dr. Davies is such a great professor. He makes a couple funny jokes and shares a couple of experiences on each topic covered. The exams are easy if you just memorize everything in the notes, that's why the class average is so high! I truly enjoyed his class, I'm going to miss it!
The class is realllly interesting but exams are fairly straight-forward making the curve ridiculous. However, Dr. Davies is the best lecturer I have ever had, he makes class so interesting and sooo funny. Good anecdotes and great jokes. He is actually just hilarious with his cold, dry humor. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
As others have said, he is a great prof. He is very funny and keeps the class interesting. The course material itself is interesting too and he makes it even better. The exams are very easy and straightforward so the only downside is the curve. You have to get a very high marks to get in the A's. Overall he is great.
great prof! but if your looking for a gpa booster GET OUT! i got killed with the curve.
Really great prof. Very clear, good notes, his humor and personal stories liven up your otherwise dreary day. It is really funny to hear him talk about kids haha. The course itself is crammed with information like any other PMCOL you take. This one however is relatively easy as there are almost no drugs to know. If you want a general sense of
Davies is a great prof. Notes are awesome, and the material is very interesting. Hard to beat the curve, but what I recommend is take BOT380 before/with/after PMCOL305 because the material overlaps with each other a lot. Also, Davies wasn't so hard on the eyes ;)
There's a lot of material in the course, but none of it is particularly challenging. Dr. Davies is an engaging and dynamic lecturer, although he seemed a little sadistic when it came to exams.
Easiest class ever, Just aim to get over an 80 and you are guaranteed a B+. Materials pretty interesting and it is explained well. Davies exams arent hard at all either
loved this class! the material was great i learned alot. i got avg (around 80) on both the midterm and final and ended up with a B+ which is pretty sweet. no textbook just keep up with the notes and try the practice questions. i thought he was pretty funny and everyone loved him. take this course if its the last one you take in univ. no prereqs!
Best class and professor of all time. Period.
Easily one of the best classes I have ever taken in University (my top 5). I found the curve a little crazy - 91% was an A- for me but other than that it was awesome. Material is insanely interesting and Dr. Davies is wicked awesome. If you need science credit, take this class - it was really fun and pretty easy.
Soooo handsome!exams are fair but some tricky questions presented. do not buy the textbook, never used
Awesome prof, really interesting course material. Unfortunately class average is extremely high and curved. Be prepared to work for your grade.
Hilarious prof (he had me laughing out loud at least once per class), very interesting material, easy tests. The averages are high though, so if you want that 4.0, work hard. If you're good with a B+ like me, then not a lot of work is required (i studied the day or two before). The final was harder than the midterm though, so be prepared for that.
Hilarious prof. Best I've ever had. Studied a day for midterm and got 92%. Then final was hard and my avg dropped to B+. Loved videos he showed, his explanations just stick with you. His notes are PERFECT! Missed a lot of classes due to illness and was not a problem at all. LOVE HIM!!!! He makes you actually look forward to going to class!
Great prof! Not boring in lectures & his notes are pretty good! Exam questions from his portion of the class were straight from the notes so make sure you know all the tiny details. He is a funny guy so you don't have to be worried about falling asleep in class!
For those of you taking 305, he's pretty much got the same attitude explaining people offing themselves IV'ing mercury or spooning a cone snail as he does explaining cats on oxycodone. Great class but a moderately hard curve.
Wonderful man.
Easy CLASS but hard curve. Very interesting material that makes you want to attend class and studying is not so bad except the fact that everyone else seems to feel this way making the curve very high. So, make sure to review everyday and it should be good.
AMAZING prof! Explains everything so, so well. He has an awesome sense of humour and will have you laughing every class. He seems like a really cool guy! Definitely recommend taking this course and this prof. Just be aware that there is they have made exams a bit harder than past years to make up for the high curve and textbook is not needed at all
This was an interesting class. Each class was like a stand-up comedy with science. With that said, however, the exams are not as easy as everyone previously claimed. Final is especially tricky and detailed. But it is a memorization type of a class so if you study you should have no problem. Text is not needed and attendance is not even mandatory.
He made this class so interesting and easy to comprehend. Definitely one of my favorite courses/profs i've had at the U. As long as you go to class and keep up with reviewing the notes you will be fine. Just make sure you do read his questions carefully as he does have a couple tricky ones.
Legendary professor, he's able to explain complicated toxicological mechanisms at a pace that doesn't lose the attention of the students. Content is difficult as well as being placed in a class full of honours students (88% averages). Get ready to work hard.
Interesting class, but not as easy as the impression I got from this site. Lots of material to memorize and exams are tricky. But 100% fair; nothing that wasn't clearly in his notes. He just reads off the slides so attendance not mandatory, and never used the textbook. Crystal clear notes. RIDICULOUSLY high curve.
Dr. Davies has a flair for humorously explaining interesting tox cases (arsenic poisoning by your Goan in-laws, or farmer Joe stirring a vat of pesticide with his arm and then developing neurotoxicity, for example). The course was on the harder side (restricted to PMCOL honors students for the most part, so averages were high).
His section of the course was pretty straightforward and the easiest on the exams. Don't need to buy the textbook cause the course material differs from textbook content. And the textbook is heavy which is a no-no for me. Don't need to worry too much bout his stuff coz they're easy
Nice guy, read directly off slides and still managed to make the classes interesting. So much material though, and ridiculously high curve. Memorize everything if you want to do well.
Dr. Davies is great. Very clear and concise. And funny too. Don't bother with the textbook though, just know his slide material.
He was so funny and friendly - he's a great lecturer, and this class was genuinely interesting. I really liked Davies, but I must say that the final was pretty hard...
Dr. Davies was brilliant! So funny and kept the class interesting. Exams were easy; straight out of his notes (textbook not required). Overall great course and great prof!!!
One of the best classes I've ever took during my 4 years of university life. Dr Davies is an amazing prof. His explanations are simple and clear and he includes videos and stuff to help you understand and visualize the effects of drugs. Exams can be challenging if you don't put in the effort. Learned so much about drug abuse I have a backup career
Incredible. He knows this course like the back of his hand - and it shows. It improves it based on how his students respond. I learned so much and deepened my interest in the subject. Exams are very fair if you study well and attend class. He is very approachable and will discuss and answer any questions that you may have. Definitely recommend!
Loved Dr Davies, wished he had more lectures in Pmcol 201.
Davies only taught the intro lecture, and three lectures at the start of November. The midterm asked one question on his intro lecture, and the final asked quite a few questions on his material. All in all, he explained concepts very clearly and was very helpful. Textbook recommended by profs, but not very useful.
This is the best and most entertaining class I've taken in my entire undergrad and it's the first class I didn't want to end. Davies made it interesting, hilarious, and even with the amount of memorizing required he didn't make it impossible to do well. I fudged the midterm so I didn't end up with an amazing mark but his exams are very fair.
midterm worth 35%, final worth 65% (not cumulative) so you cant screw up either. Most of the lectures were interesting, he is knowledgable and funny. just wish there was something else to take away some weight from the final
took this in the spring, so the lectures were brutally long- but it was ok if Davies was lecturing because he's quite entertaining. His exams are straightforward and fair- but don't start studying two days before- way too much information. Study Study Study all the way through and you'll do fine.
Davies is a baller and this class is one of the funnest I've taken. All the lectures are quite interesting save for a couple of the early ones, and Davies shares a number of stories throughout the semester that are quite funny. Tests aren't hard, but there is a lot to memorise. No textbook is always nice. Would take again.
Davies is probably the best lecturer I've ever had. He has a way of engaging you in the lecture, so it's hard to zone out. There is A LOT to memorize. The midterm is slightly misleading, our average was 88%. The final was extremely difficult in comparison, definitely saw a couple tears falling after leaving the exam room. All in all, a good class.
This is NOT a difficult course. High average on the midterm, lower average on the final. Amazing lecturer. Go to class, make notes, do moderate review and there is no reason you can't get an A. Final wasn't harder it was just longer than the MT. Concepts are easy, but if you're not going to put any effort in well than you won't get an A.
This course has a 40% midterm and a 60% final, non-cumulative. Doesn't sound bad, but there is a lot to know and memorize. Davies is such an interesting funny guy so definitely go to class as he tells stories, that can actually help you remember the information. Textbook is not necessary. All MC but tests are hard. Very interesting material overall
Super interesting topics and notes; however, since this was my first pmcol class, I didn't have background that others may have had if they took pmcol 201202, etc. The tests were difficult (yet 88% midterm..) and there was SO much material. Literally took 2 weeks to study for the non-cumulative final. 40%MT 60%Final, curved slightly, no textbook.
Great prof! He is funny and the lectures are always super enjoyable. Depending oh your background in biochem and pharmacology, this may or may not be a hard class. The final was a bit daunting at 60% but it was non-cumulative! Questions were straightforward and didn't try to trick you. Overall really good class.
Davies was a really engaging prof. 40% MT & 60% final with no curve was daunting, but it's non-cumulative and no textbook required. I used PSYCO 275 as a pre-req so I had no pmcol background, so I had to put in more time into memorizing the material. Tests are surprisingly easy if you study a week or two in advance
Dr. Davies is fantastic! His lectures are very clear and he is always willing to help. The material isn't easy, but if you review regularly and stay on top of things it is a doable course. Would recommend!
Amazing prof. Great, always entertaining and interesting lectures, very humourous at times. Definitely among the top 3 profs I've had. No textbook, 1MT(40%) 1 final (60%), with no curve. Sounds tough but definitely doable because his notes are so good. Most of the stuff is tested from the notes, but its necessary to go to class and get the sidestuf
Such an amazing guy! His midterm was a bit tricky, but I didn't study all the small details (Know EVERYTHING on the slides!) but final was much easier. If you memorize EVERYTHING on each slide, which really isn't much, then it will be no problem getting an A+. He's hilarious and has some great stories! Gonna miss this class, and him! TAKE HIM!!
Hilarious stories and funny guy. Know structures for final (6Qs), most questions are pure memorization (95%) and some application (5%, not even). Easy/fair exams; don't start studying 2 days before. Class attendance isn't necessary but would recommend - he has some AMAZING stories. Best class I've taken in my undergrad! Would take again :)
As much as I enjoyed the topics in this class, as well as Dr. Davies lecture style, this class was brutal. Unless you have organic chemistry and a biochem DO NOT take this class. It doesn't matter what they say the pre-reqs are, you need to have those two or you'll put in way more work than you should ever have to for the final. 1 midterm, 1 final.
Dr. Davies is a fantastic lecturer! This was the first pharm class I took, but I don't think having the background is necessary. Really test heavy, with a 40% midterm and 60% final, but both exams were only lecture material, and were super fair with no surprises. Dr. Davies has a lot of great stories and makes the material very interesting!
Dr. Davies is funny and the course itself is both interesting and easy. He makes the exams as straightforward as possible and almost everything is based off his slides. 2 or 3 days of studying for each exam (40% MT and 60% F) will get you an A+ (or at least it did for me). You could skip and do well, but his funny stories and videos are worth it.
Dr. Davies was a fantastic professor! I really enjoyed this class and all it had to offer. It is a little scary having the final weighted so much but it really wasnt that bad!!
Best professor ever. Makes the material so fun and teaches with incredible clarity! His lectures made me remember the material much better. Know the details for the exams and you'll be solid!
Excellent professor, that has hilarious stories about drugs. Midterm/Final split was 40/60 % and all multiple choice. There is a lot to memorize in this course, you need to know all the details of the slides. It is not a difficult course, just a lot of memorization including a few structures for the final.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PROF AND THIS CLASS! Take this course before it gets cancelled - it's too good to be true. Exams are 99% straightforward, no tricks. The material is also super interesting and Davies is the a flawless lecturer - he doesn't miss a beat!
Like everyone says, this guy is amazing. You can do well in this course without having any pre-reqs. This is all cause he teaches so clearly, and tests are extremely fair. They changed up the course now so it's 2 midterms (25%, 30%) and a final (45%). Not curved. Honestly there's no con to taking this course. If you can, please do.
Course was broken down into two midterms and a final. No specific pharmacology prereqs were needed to do well. Davies ' lectures are clear and interesting, and he supplements them with hilarious stories. Exams were quite easy-fair for a third year science course if you put in the effort. Would 10/10 recommend Davies and this course!
Great prof who makes the content really engaging and easy to understand. He has great stories and videos so it's worth showing up just for those. The midterms and finals are all fair and pretty much word for word from the slides and the exams are non-cumulative which is great!
Two words to describe Davies as a teacher: Wonderful. (Twice)
Great course with a great professor. 3 exams this year form your mark; 2 midterms (25% and 30%) & a final (45%), all noncumulative. Test material is based completely on the PPTs you will do fine as long as you study the lecture slides. Most questions on memorization as opposed to application. Entertaining lectures and caring prof overall!
2 Midterms and 1 final all noncumulative! Very interesting lectures, I loved the course!
He is an amazing prof, so hilarious and engaging and the content that he has chosen for this course is great. There's three non-cumulative short answer and multiple choice exams and just like 305, he expects you to know every detail on them. The presentation is graded generously and he generally lets you do any topic you ask for.
Excellent professor. I could so without some of the politics that he injects into the lectures occasionally; otherwise good. Would prefer if he taught the whole class over having the guest lecturers. They're alright, but Dr. Davies is better.
I guess this would be an easy class if you have pmcol and ochem background. I found it hard, but averages were 84% ish on each midterm. 2 midterms 25% and 30% + final. All stuff straight from the notes, but there is a lot to memorize. A+ is 95, A is 90, etc. He's a great prof, funny, clear and lectures are extremely fun to attend and interesting!!
Probably my fav prof of my entire undergrad. This course is content heavy, but he made it super enjoyable and his exams are extremely fair. Take this course if you can memorize a bunch of things and are able to just recall everything during exams.
One of the best courses of my undergrad. Exam questions come directly out of his notes, so you'll do great if you can memorize slides. Great practice questions for exams were provided. I had already taken biochem, o chem, and physio, so I found this class pretty easy. Course content is interesting and Dr. Martin is an engaging professor.
Favourite prof of my undergrad. Course content was super interesting, and Dr. Davies was also really funny which made coming to class easy. No text book and non cumulative exams. Overall, amazing prof and loved taking this class with him.
Good professor, non-cumulative but there's a reason why it's that way. I am not very good at memorization so ended with a not so satisfactory mark for the effort put in, but that has nothing to do with the professor. Funny, accessible, reasonable. Interesting yet difficult course.
Amazing!! The perfect prof for the perfect 'easy A' class for science students. He has a lot of experience in the field and has spoken with many users of the drugs we learn about, so he adds in funny stories during lecture. Every detail said during lecture and on slides is fair game.
easiest course I've ever taken; finished with 100%. just memorize slides and spit it back out
hands down best prof on campus. witty, informative and clear. what more could you want? dresses nice too lol
PMCOL 305 is very easy compared to other second and third year science courses, Dr Davies sections for 303 are likewise very intuitive and is tested on very fairly However beware the guest lecturers, their questions on the exams are often poorly designed and have little to do with what they emphasized or mumbled through in the lecture.
PMCOL 200 is a class with rotational lectures. Martin makes lectures interesting and his slides are the shortest among the other speakers. His questions made you think a little bit, but you can get them as long as you've studied. Beware of the curve: I got a 91.01 and ended up with an A-. Class averages were 83-85 for all exams.
I feel deceived. Everyone told me this class was easy, but he has made it much much harder. The final was 120 mcq in 2 hours, cumulative, with 40 questions which had options extending from A to J. It was very tricky and the class average was in the high 60s. It's an interesting course but beware it is not a gpa booster anymore!
The midterms and finals are all straightforward A to E multiple choice and the class average is in the low 80s. (Class is not curved!) Davies is an amazing lecturer and the course content is super cool!
Martin Davies is a great prof! This course is very memorization heavy, but if you are good at that, then this course is just right for you! His notes are in depth, and he will only test on the material tested in class - no textbook required!
as a normal science student without much physiology background it wasnt an easy course. get ready to understand the mechanisms, make your own notes , list out everything on excel and that would make your life easier. otherwise the lecture part was great and interesting.
Dr. Davies is the best professor that I've had so far in my university degree. He is an amazing lecturer. He's funny, he explains concepts very clearly, and his notes are great. His tests were more than fair and he told you almost exactly what to expect for the exams and what we didn't need to know. This class is my favourite, so interesting.
Easy course, but you have to work for it. He only tests on powerpoint slides, so it's easy to just make flashcards to study for the exams. Very interesting material which made it fun to study
Easy class, but get ready to memorize lots of slides :)
Martin is the best! He is hilarious and passionate about the material, which makes the class enjoyable. Averages are high, but don't think it's an easy A because there is a lot to memorize. With that being said, the content is so interesting, you will want to study which makes it easy to get an A. Final was similar to midterms in difficulty. 10/10
