2 hour lecture from memory, wow.
great teacher but his exams are torture
Final exam: 2 essays, 2 short answer questions, 2 hours! Very dry lectures.
makes it fun and simple and not to mention he's hot!
Has a way of making the past come to life.
he's alright, but he makes the course hard even though its just a liberial
nice guy, he can teach, but course boring and marks hard for no reason
pretty good teacher, makes thing interesting, but is rather a hard marker
If you like watching the 700 Club, you'll love this course
For no reason whatsoever, he'll grade you tough...he thinks its a PHd class
Want to get a crap mark in a liberial course? TAKE THIS COURSE!!
Has vast interest in the subject and it's contagious!
Change your liberial right away, really hard for no apparent reason
Seems to like marking hard and finds the littlest mistakes in essays and tests
Talks really slowly, really boring.
The course was really good...I would recommend!
DON'T TAKE HIS COURSES! He marks hard, he gives unclear instructions
Great knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. Makes history very interesting.
He is a really good professor but only if you work hard.
This guy loves his work and shows it in every class.
Terrible Prof, its not just based on taking notes, he expects you to read his mind...he won't tell you how he marks
Utter crap! Why is a man who favours students and takes off marks on essays even though he never stated that we needed to HAVE A TABLE OF CONTENTS is able to teach? Never take him unless you like watching 100 Huntly Street......
interesting lectures, and tests arent too bad at all, doesnt mark that hard at all
This teacher has the most boring lectures. He speaks so slowly and monotone that going to his lectures are like torture. He also has favourites so don't expect a high mark.
I totally agree with the below statement. He favours students and those ones get the A's. If you have a big mouth and like to suck up, he'll love you
true taht he plays favorites. ok guy, but boring as hell
Young, Vibrant, and Full of Knowledge. One of those teachers that actually likes what he teaches, and is there for all of the right reasons. History is not a breeze subject, that takes brains which past raters obviously lacked.
Actually History does not require brains, all it is memorizing. He's totally unfair in marking and obviously the previous person was a pet of his to prove that he favourite's students. History is going to get you no where in life buddy.
I totally agree with the last statement. He knows his stuff but is a totally unreasonable marker when it comes to students who don't suck up. I would totally drop his class and take a real liberal that you could actually use in the real world.
Pretty nice guy, and not a very hard marker. You don't ever have to read any of the text, just take down his notes word for word and the test is on his lectures. Wasn't one of his favorites and still got a B.
Very nice guy...enthusiastic and friendly. Made the class really interesting because he was a great storyteller. Really thorough and always willing to chat with students. Made a special effort to offer praise for a good exam that I wrote.
garbage prof and a watse of money
History is a breeze course and obviously one person here isn't taking a major that requires brains! Anyways, the prof sucks 'cause he favorites and marks hard as hell on the essay for no apparent reason. If you ask me, take a liberal that will help you
Uh...most people who take history classes are NOT history majors. Who goes to RYERSON to major in history? I'm a science major on my second degree, and I got A's in 2 of his classes. If u don't like history, don't take it! Greig knows his stuff.
Totally garbage courses he teaches and you'll be suprised the amount of people who actually take history as a major. Take politic courses that are actually interesting and you'll 100% get a good mark!
Take an easier elective than any of his
I agree with all the other unhappy faces. I'm a A student and got a D+ for no apparent reason overall in the course. Seems nice on the outside. but Satan's brother on the inside
Talented lecturer and hard marker. Refreshing sense of humour. Don't take the course if you don't like history and are not prepared to work hard.
Don't bother taking a course that will bring your GPA down......take the politics courses and you'll see your GPA improve. As for this course, he has favourites and is way too picky in marking. Blah!
Terrible Prof. I admit he knows his stuff but cmon, this is a liberal course therefore it should be easy!
People shouldn't trash-talk this prof, especially the ones calling themselves A students (while making ludocrous spelling mistakes). He's a good prof, knows what he is doing. If you suck at essays and theoretcial courses I recomend you drop.
Great professor. His lectures are so interesting and informative. I don't agree with anyone who thinks he is a tough marker. I got an A on everything, including the essay. If you bad mouth him it is because you don't know how to work hard.
Easily the best prof I've had to date. People who struggle in his class either don't show up to lectures, don't pay attention, or don't understand simple intrstructions. His marking is stern but fair. Very learned man, and a great storyteller.
What?? He's far from fair he is the biggest **** person I have ever met
I totally understand instructions but there is a catch....the instructions need to be stated!! This guy marks hard for no apparent reason and expects you to be a mind-reader
this guy talks so funnny and his voice is so annoying it is hard to listen to his lectures... he seems really hard and stern and is pretty intimidating.
I think he's great! interesting lectures and helpful seminars. I think his accent is part of his charm, if you would bother to check out his credentials you'll see that he's way smarter than most of us will ever be.... :p
He's tough, but very informative. He knows his stuff and if you are willing to sit and listen to his lectures (and study!) you'll be fine. Don't buy the text either because his lectures are sufficient (with good notes).
Loved his lectures- keeps it entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class. Too bad i got a bad mark.
boring to the bone
Got a bad mark, but at least the lectures and movies were entertaining.
Marks hard, monotone, isn't clear on what he wants on his essay. Hard tests too. Take an easier liberal like geography
This guy has got to be the biggest snob I have ever met. He is a condescending, obnoxious game show host. Even with my notes beside me, I couldn't pass his "95 review qustions" final exam. Chill out dude, it was called the Enlightenment for a reason! Peace :)
This guy, marks the way he feels like it. All these liberal courses are a waste of time and he knows it, but makes it hard for no reason. Always wears the same one suit that he owns and tries to fool people that this is such a great class and you can actually learn something from it and use it aft
I thought he was a great lecturer. He clearly cares about the subject, and tries his best to make things entertaining. He is kinda dorky, but also funny.
hard prof for absolutely no reason. I recommend taking a liberial with a person who knows what they are doing
One of the best professors ever! Passionate and very entertaining.
This man talks like he's having sex while given the danm lecture. He makes no useful points and doesnt explain the marks he gives. True**** :@
I love this class. So interesting, and SUCH a funny speaker. Although not intentionally. And he'll give you all the time you want if you need help. Definitely worth taking, although he is a hard marker.
Ya, can we say impossible, boring, and a dork? Yes we can. Thanks for the 95 review questions sir, oh, and by the way, we all changed our final marks... Chow Babes!!!
Not a bad class, the lectures were good, and he provided good insight to the topics, but he is a very hard marker, its a decent course tho...
Greig is a fantastically enigmatic prof who is more than willing to give you time if you need it, and although his marking is a bit tougher than the norm, if you put the time and effort into his lectures and your work, you will not have difficulty pulling out a good grade. Really enthusiastic, a great class.
Hard marker. Solution: Names and places spelled correctly and as many dates as you can remember. If you go to him to get help it seems like he doesen't really help you at all or even want to help you however you will definitly get a better mark in the end just for showing interest.
Funny guy keeps things interesting
a prof who made history class interesting. He doesn't give boring lectures but he hired one bad T.A. for the course. She told us not to be bias but whoa, during seminars, she was so biased at our answers. No one is ever right except for her. I complained and found out others did too. Don't take his course if he won't switch the T.A.
Loved him!!
Makes the class very interesting. If you come to the lectures and take notes, you will get a good mark.
Fantastic prof and course. He lectures perfectly and he's pretty easy-going. Seminars are easy marks, midterm and final were very fair. Loved the course.
I highly recommend this professor. His lectures are interesting, and the material is comrehensible for people interested in history. There are easier liberal courses to take but with this one you actually learn something instead of the usual bullcrap ryerson offers. Once again, great prof, highly recommend.
I took his Cold War class a year ago and it was quite interesting. He was an good teacher of the material, and I felt he had enthusiasm for the topic of the Cold War. I must say the best part of the entire class was when he asked who Hitler hated just as much as the Jews, and some idiot kid said "the blacks??!" haha what a moron, i laughed so hard!
He's alot of fun and makes lectures interesting. He is kind of a hard marker though.
You can tell he really knows/loves his stuff. I loved his lectures but probably because I'm really into history. If you're not, stay away and go for a liberal with an easier marker.
Awesome prof, he was very interesting and fun to listen to. I would say he is the best professor I have had so far. Dont bother buying the text book you'll never use it. You must go to the lectures or your screwed!
Elizabethan England was definitely the best elective I took! The man is intelligent and interesting and that makes him so sexy in my eyes.
Best Prof Ever! I have had a few classes with Martin. He is engaging, gives great lectures and leads stimulating seminars as well. Don't take his classes for an easy mark. If you are prepared to keep up with assigned readings and go to lecture, you will love this prof :)
Great prof, his course (my liberal hst 111) was the most enjoyable last term. The class is not free marks, it was my absolute lowest (B), but his enthusiasm and attitude made it all worth it, great overall. Didnt buy the textbook, and it was never used, but attending the lectures is absolutely mandatory for this class.
Must attend lectures because he does not use the textbook, fair marker
I am very critical of the university system as a hole and spare no rope for many Ryerson teachers. I hope you take me at my word that Prof. Greig is one of the best lecturers on this campus. I recommend both HST 111 for beginners and The British Empire for advanced enthusiasts. He dosn't lean on a textbook so no choice but to go to class.
Do not buy the textbooks, did not pick it up once. i repeat, do not buy the required reading. the only thing to be successful is attend lecture. He is a hard marker but hilarious prof, and makes lecture enjoyable.
Marks overly easy on the midterm and final, and overly hard on the essay. Gives no feedback on content and only criticizes minor grammar errors. I've had less grammar comments in my English essays. Otherwise, good lecturer. Don't buy the textbook - completely unnecessary.
Great lecturer. Easy midterm. Beware of research essay, he marks way too hard and focuses much more on syntax instead if content. DO NOT go above the word limit for the essay, he will punish you for it more than you expect.
Great Prof! Follow these tips and I GUARANTEE you will get a great mark: Go to class, listen well. Done. Passionate about history and cracks lots of jokes. Easy midterm and final but as was said, VERY brutal marker on the essay (I was getting 95% in high school english). If you listen, you will achieve high marks and learn a lot of good stuff!
DON'T buy the textbook...you will never use it. Only need books for seminars and most can be found online. GO TO CLASS everything in your midterm and final is in lecture. Talks entire time, so need to take notes fast. Midterm and final easy peasy if you study, essay HARD.
terrible prof, does not provide notes, powerpoints, nor does he follow the textbook. Just talks in class and expects students to know what he is talking about midterm/final are essay based. His rating of 3.2/5 is definitely off. AVOID at all costs.
I like this prof, he sorta reminds me of Jim Carrey. This class was based off of the prof's own notes, so the book is not necessary. Midterm and final are essay based. I personally don't think he marks harder on the essay as some people noted. I'm not very good at essays and I got 75% on it. I would absolutely take him again.
Excellent teacher. Gives interesting lectures. The essay worth 30% of your mark is marked rigidly but this is the case in all of the History courses. I highly recommend him or any of the courses he teaches.
Interesting lecturer, but impossible marker. Despite others saying he marks the mid term easy, this isn't true, have the class failed it. Avoid at all costs
A very nice professor, may seem as tough, but is very fair. He makes lectures very interesting, has a good sense of humour. Doesn't really use text book. But must attend all the lectures and take notes for he does not have/provide any slides or notes. If you go to lectures and study notes - you're good to go!
Probably the most useless professor ever. Lectures are surprisingly interesting, but the way he marks is so irrelevant...no wonder why so many people drop his classes.
Great lecturer, but one of the hardest marking profs at Ryerson. He's helpful, but if you are looking for a easy course, avoid him. However, if you are a history major/really passionate about the subject, you'll like him, as he manages to make the topics interesting.
I dont know, I absolutely adore him! He makes corny little jokes that you can't help but be absolutely delighted by! Knows his stuff, and makes the course enjoyable! Hints: Attend every single lecture, and take notes of dates and names. Try to ask him something after class, show alot of enthusiam, he def. remembers the passionate ones! :)
I have to give his lecturing skills an A, but he is the hardest marker at Ryerson with ridiculous expectations. Failed the midterm but had all the answers, due to my essay writing. Took me 2 weeks to write the only paper, even went to writing centre for help and paid a tutor and still got a 65. Ridiculous marker. Don't take his course.
Good in lectures but expectations are quite high for a low-level history course, where most of the class was straight out of high school. I found him quite tough on essay marking but pretty fair when it comes to exams. Everything on the midterm or final exam is straight from his lectures. I didn't buy the textbook and we didn't use it at all.
Love the way he talks about the French Revolution bby mmmm call me Louis the 14th bb
I've taken multiple classes with him. Whenever I get a bad mark on something, I find it's almost always his TAs marking it. I'm not sure what their problem is, but I think they get all crabby after all the first year papers they have to mark. It's not a good idea to take his classes if you're not in history.
He is very funny, and his lectures are pretty clear. But he's left in the middle of seminars before because he was having a temper tantrum, and if he grades your papers, you're lucky to even pass. His standards are entirely too high considering he teaches chiefly first year courses.
Took history with him as an elective because I found it interesting while majoring in IT. First university-level history course I had taken but this prof treats everyone as if they are history majors. Most of your mark depends on a mid-semester essay that requires detailed referencing, never worked harder in my life on an assignment and got a C.
He is a bit of a tough marker, but he gives the best lectures i have ever had. He had an amazing level of enthusiasm and makes the entire lecture exciting and interesting. Dont get the textbook, you will never use it. Just attend lectures and read the pages he provides for the seminars. I would definitely take another of his courses.
Great guy to talk to and an incredible lecturer, which is saying something for history, but easily the hardest marker at Ryerson. His classes are famous for decreasing in size by about 50% after marks on the 1st essay and midterm are returned because so many people fail them. His 2.2 easiness rating is way to high, it should be a 1. Not an easy C
Great prof if you're into the content being taught, his lectures are long and you have to show up because he doesn't post any thing on BB. He's pretty funny and seems to know a lot about European history and you don't need the textbook. Only downside is that he grades really hard.
He's a pretty funny guy, lectures are definitely more entertaining than I thought they'd be (I'm a math student). He doesn't really use blackboard so you have to go to lectures, and he speaks up to the last minute every time. The midterms and final exam were tough for me though.
Very enthusiastic when giving lectures (kinda like story time every class). This prof is hilarious and very engaging. His tone of voice and mannerism is very enthusiastic! I hope to have another class with him in the future! Great instructor if you are very passionate about History and love the method of oral teaching.
I took century of revolution with him, and it was easily the best class I've taken in university so far. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and it made me want to know everything he had to tell us. If you put the effort in, you will succeed and find him very supportive. He is very encouraging to those who show interest and initiative! Best!
Never again.
read the reviews for this prof and was actually scared to take his course. wrong!! he is an amazing professor, extremely supportive and interesting. i am not the best studier, however went to every class and wrote the midterm got an 84%. not a hard marker, really worth taking !
He's good overall, although your entire mark is based on 4 grades, so beware He also marks very slowly.
Excellent story teller! MUST go to class and participate. I fought and tried hard, got a B. Really have to be able to see the links between ideas, and articulate your arguements well.
My average without this class was sitting at a 79%. In Gr 12 I won the History award. I took this class because I enjoy history and I thought it would be one of my easier classes. I attended every lecture, finished my assignment and participated in seminars yet I still failed. My essay mark was returned on the day of the exam.. Slow marker..
One of the worst profs I've ever had. If you enjoy a prof who lectures like a priest then this is the class for you. It's tough to be engaged in a history class unless the professor makes the content interesting, and he is unable to do that. He is also an incredibly difficult marker and is slow as well. If you can avoid his classes.
This is by far the worse prof I've ncounter in the history programme. Indeed, he is very knowledgeable however, he is a brutal marker. The HIS 400 Course is compulsory in the program and he does not hesitate in failing students. I've submitted the assignments, participated in seminars and wrote the final yet still failed. Overall, bad experience.
Dr. Greig is a wonderful lecturer - he's entertaining, keeps the content interesting, and tries to deliver his lectures in a way that's relatable and easy to understand for those new to history courses. His midterm and essays are fair, and he's a fair marker who gives decent feedback. Overall he's a great first-year professor, and I loved his class
Greig is a solid prof who can actually give a lecture and hold the attention of his class. But while he's a knowledgeable and effective teacher, beware before taking this class. He is a tough grader and "likes to see averages in the 60s." You cannot make up a missed seminar. You will read... a lot. Not an easy A; in fact, not an A at all.
I've had Dr. Greig twice, and both times had so much fun learning from him. His lecture style is interesting and entertaining, and he works hard to make students appreciate the subject matter. Take detailed notes, attend seminars, and be sure to put thought and effort into the essay you'll do well! You can't coast, but it's definitely worth it!
I have taken 2 courses with Greig. His lectures are very interesting and well done, but it is not worth it because he is a very tough marker. He goes through your essay like an editor. I only took another one of his classes because I enjoyed his lectures, but I will not be taking another again. The poor grade is not worth it.
I'm a first year history student, and have one course with him. His lectures are easily one of the best parts of my week. He presents the material in a cohesive and interesting manner, and overall the course is stress-free if you stay on top of your research-essay. His marking seems fair, although I've only had the first midterm. Great Prof!
Your grade is based off of an essay, midterm, final and 3 seminars. Slides aren't posted on D2L so attendance is a must. I never felt like skipping class though b/c his lectures felt more like story-time, which was fun. He's quite the character. Difficult marker but if you put the effort in you'll do okay. I'd happily take a class with him again.
Unfair marker, condescending and discriminate against students with disabilities. He has awful dad jokes that are often offensive and he is by far the worst prof I have ever at Ryerson. STAY AWAY.
I really enjoyed this class. The content was super interesting. The slides are clear and coherent without any bells and whistles. I appreciate the approach to learning. Great course!
as a non history major I found myself loving this professor, he's hilarious and his story like way of lecturing historical events didn't make them seem boring as other history class Ive taken. doesn't post slides or anything online so you have to go to class, is super accessible outside of class and an all around amazing guy. tough grader, seminars
Take a class with Greig if you want your class to feel like story-time. I took his class during the first semester of my first year so I don't have a lot to compare him too, but I didn't need much comparison to realize he is an amazing lecturer. He does not put anything online so you have to attend class but it's worth it. Tough but fair marker.
Honestly, hands down the worst professor at Ryerson University. I did enjoy his lectures and I attended every class. I have an issue with his marking. He is truly impossible to please so do not even bother taking his class. I actually gave him two chances but I dropped both classes after the first class test.
Great professor, pay attention in class and write a well thought out, well cited paper to do well
Dr. Greig is such a great lecturer, his classes and detailed and genuinely entertaining. Really thorough. Definitely a class you need to go to in order to pass. You can't miss lectures, because his exam prep basically states everything is eligible to be on the exam.
greig is a great lecturer and his grading (though tough) is fair. you guys are just mean
the first 3/4 classes were spent on things that happened before the medieval era and wasn't on the midterm (so i failed woo). He doesn't post his slides or make a study guide and he makes us buy the textbook and i haven't even opened it . three hours of nonstop talking and only 1/2 of the slides have words written on them. cool class but hard prof
Hes funny but not the most helpful. MUST go to class because he doesnt post the PowerPoint he used & the slides are just pictures so pay attention and take notes. Midterm, exam, essay, and seminars which are annoying if you dont like presentations. Overall interesting material but hard tests which are just multiple choice and essays. No textbook
You cant miss a class because he doesnt post but its worth it. Hes very passionate about his work and it shows, every lecture it told as a story. Took 2 courses with him and hes the best lecturer at ryerson
I loved this prof. He was so accommodating when I needed an extension on my research paper. I learned so much in his class and both of his exams are very fair and straightforward. There is an option to email him answers to seminar questions for participation marks instead of talking over zoom for students with anxiety:) If you study you'll succeed
Unfair marker.
Even though we had all of 3 interactions with eachother as the class was asynchronous, it was an absolutely fantastic course. It was really easy to work it into my schedule and it was tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it its a blast. The lectures contentwise with the professor's comedy are gems. Though he's a fair tough grader.
Papers and exams are graded on the more difficult side, but nothing too extreme. You must devote a lot of time to the weekly lectures and the research paper to succeed.
Long but interesting lectures, made material decently interesting. Research paper is really important, dont skip on that. Took forever to grade papers. Overall decent class, lots of information so it can be difficult but thats expected with a history class.
Absolutely adored Prof. Greig, he is engaging and entertaining to listen to. I found myself thoroughly enjoying all his classes, and his way of delivering the material is effective. The seminar material was a little challenging, but the questions helped break it down. Quite a tough grader, and the research paper was hefty. You MUST pay attention.
His lectures were pretty interesting, but they tended to drag at times. No review or anything for the midterm or exam (both are worth a lot).
I recommend not to take this prof. Very bad in terms of every aspect. He marks very harshly and does not give good feedback. The midterm and final exam are completely different than what he covers in class but according to him it is.
Professor Greig was easily one of my favourite profs during my undergrad in History. His lectures were always a favourite part of my week. Tells history like a story time. The key to success in his courses is to write out a well researched, well written and analytical research essay. Very generous with extensions if you need extra time as well.
Martin Greig is a great prof who clearly is very educated on the material. His lectures are always interesting and engaging. He is a tough grader though so it is important to attend all classes and tutorials. Overall I enjoyed his teaching style and the contents of the course.
I loved Professor Greigs lectures - I however did not love his marking style. I am throughly convinced this man is impossible to please. Despite speaking with him on multiple occasions and making active attempts to understand his expectations I came up hopeless. Hopefully you will have better luck then I.
Engaging professor with an entertaining lecture style. Challenging but rewarding - stay on top of readings and participate actively. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep. Tough grader but worth the effort.
As amazing as the lectures are that I looked forward to them every week, the grading is so harsh I'm discouraged from taking a course with him again. Lectures are also very important bc he adds so much more than what the slides say. Also lots of readings for the seminars. Fun lectures at the cost of your grade
