Dr. Hartog was extremly helpful when it came to this class, I had a very difficult time but he always made himself available to help at any time.
Good teacher, good guy! Always helpful and very fair!
Marty - is a good professor (especially considering he isn't inside an actual classroom, yet preparing students to teach!) He is always willing to help you out. Just look for him and he will give you advice if you ask.
Where did this guy come from? I find it difficult to take a class from someone who hasn't been in the classroom in 30 years. He has a warped sense of reality as it pertains to what needs to be taught to students. What's the deal with the Q&A's?
he had math problems that hand no answer to them. now u may be saying it just might be me but half the class agrees with me on this one.
He doesnt know how to teach, but hes a nice guy!
The material in his course is really hard, but seemed to just want move through it even if not every one understood. He was very nice when I went for extra help and seemed to want to help me when I was failing. So I ended the class with a C+.
I had to teach myself the material... he failed to understand that if we placed so low on the placement test that we probably suck at math... he failed the majority of the class. what a jerk
He is a horrible teacher. He was not helpful at all. He should not be allowed to teach! He was mean to students when they asked questions. He did not give anyone a chance.
hes such a jerk... he failed me even though i knew the material... he sucks so bad... thw worst teacher at southern by far.
The worst teacher. Isn't helpful at all. Is rude to students.
He sucks at teaching! Does not seem to grasp that the fact that we are in this class because we don't know math! STAY AWAY FROM HIM IF YOU ARE MATHEMATICALLY CHALLENGED! Save your money and look for a more helpful Prof.

I really liked him and his classes. He approaches the material in an original and real-world fashion. He focuses on people's natural and ability to problem-solve in a variety of ways rather than traditional exact rules type math. I think those who have trouble don't trust their own brains.
He stuck! He says he will help you but in the end confuses you more. I had to take the class over, the I got an A-! Thats how bad he is!
Took him in the summer, 1 year of math in 1 month. The class was hard as nails but he helped me a lot. He came to class an hour early for extra help and stayed an hour late for even more help. Very helpful and he seemed nice to me.
Good guy. Always there to help you out.
The class was easy. He seemed really nice and helpful, but the lessons were super dry and boring. I couldn't force myself to pay attention.
Prof. "Dr." Hartog was very unclear about what he taught the class. I thought MAT100 would be an easy course but not with him. You can barely stay focused in this class...and he is not interesting at all. I wouldn't recomend him to anyone.
Generally he's a nice guy..but very boring when it comes to teaching. I know Math is not an easy subject to teach, but he was very unclear in his teachings and very confusing. His tests are hard, and he gives you a time limit on them, which is ridiculous because the tests are super long. Wouldn't recommend him.
this prof. was extremely hard...this class moved very quickly and didnt allow for any errors or mistakes. if you miss one class you will fall behind. prof. hartog did not make his lessons clear and this led many people in his class to fall behind and not understand. i would not recommend this teacher unless you are very good at math..
too hard..makes u do all extra work and xtra papers just for stupid problems...what a jerk
BY FAR the WORST professor @ southern. He tries to help you but FAILS MISERABLY. Very awful attitude when it comes to helping students. POOR testing methods, apparently it's cool to give you students the longest test ever and decide a half hour into it that you're going to put a time limit on it. RIDICULOUS, WASTE OF TIME class.
Took his summer course. He came an hour early and stayed an hour later for extra help. The course was hard but he helped a lot. If you showed effort he would help you even more if you were struggling. We did one year of math in a month and I pass. That says something for an Art major with highly poor math skills.
He is arrogant, and talks to everyone like they are inferior. He assigns useless time consuming work...Don't ever take his courses...does NOT grade fairly
Good teacher and you can tell that he truly loves the subject. However he's a bit unrealistic about what he expects from his students. Be prepared to work!
He is judgemental and condesending
It's kind of a boring class. I end up listening for the first 5 minutes of a new topic and rest my time is spent doodling. He's a REALLY nice guy outside of class, but during class, boring. The class is a lot of word problems, which are surprisingly hard. It takes a while to get the way the class works, but when you do, you'll do fine
This teacher is difficult and does not make his lessons easy to understand, though he tries, in the end he confuses himself and you. Nice guy but would not suggest taking him. Tests are way too long, sometimes taking two periods to complete.
Dr. Hartog is a great guy! Don't let others scare you! If you understand anything about math, this class is easy. The homework is pointless and never collected. Just do the portfolio problems and go to class! I only payed attention half the time and got out of his final and an A in the class.
he doesn't have many good reviews, but i think he's a great teacher. he assigns homework, but never looks at it. he posts all of his lessons online before class so you can print them out. he has portfolios (3); they are very challenging, but he will help you and he gives you more than enough time to do them. in general, he's great. very helpful
Whatever his flaws, he really wants people to be good teachers and will do anything to help. His ideas about how to approach topics are great. I'd rather be coached by someone who cares and sees the positive in the teaching profession, (even if he's idealistic to the point of overlooking some problems in the program), then by burnt out mean people.
he is a great teacher ! he cares about his students and he is always very helpful. he does not grade the homework or check it for that matter. the portfolios are challenging for his class but he gives you plenty of time to complete them.
he really is a nice teacher, but confuses himself while he is teaching. very confusing tests, does not prepare you.
Doesn't prepare you for tests or quizes. He confuses himself while teaching and doesn't fully explain anything.
I took mat 105 and failed with him, took it again with a different professor and finished with a 93 average......
Very nice professor, he wants all of his students to do well. The material is extremely difficult (it is calculus). Prof. Hartog does not make the exams harder than they have to be. He assigns h/w in the textbook that he collects, but the book is otherwise useless.
He is a nice guy, but not a good teacher. He always goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with anything. (Calc 2 and Calc 3... while we are in Calc 1) He is an unfair grader... he does not grade things on time. He rushes through sections, he doesn't post assignments/notes on time. This class was a terrible experience for me.
Would not recommend for a summer class at all, he is the worst professor i have ever had. yes its a summer class, but he rushes and tries to teach a whole lesson in the last 10 minutes of class. we have a quiz everyday and he is very unfair. avoid at all costs!
The class is a lot of work and stressful, but what you learn is very good stuff. The down side is: either from their own conceit, or because it makes it easier for a teacher when someone already knows the material, some students get treated like "Rock Stars" which is very unpleasant to watch, and does not help others learn.
He's a really nice professor who tries hard to get to know his students, and you learn a lot of useful stuff in the class. The class is stressful because you get a lot of assignments to be completed within a small time frame, but he's more than fair with grading. If you do your work, you'll get an A.
Do not take this class. Awful professor. Does not explain fully and his tests are different material than what was covered. Extremely confusing. He talks way too much and picks on students
Very nice person, I enjoyed this class a lot
Nice professor. He really took his time to explain the material. Made us work in pairs often which felt awkward for a math class, but overall okay class.
Great professor
He's an awful professor, DON'T take him!!! Thats all I can say..
Please take this advice... I am an A student with a 3.9 GPA. I went to extra help, YouTube, and other out of class resources and still only walked away with a B+. Dr. Hartog never adapted to the snow days we had, went way to fast even when a majority of people were confused, and taught much of this class through YouTube Don't take this class Period
I'm honestly surprised I got an A in this class. He did say this was his first time teaching business calculus, but still he failed to accomodate the 50 minute, 3 time a week schedule and snow days. He held extra help sessions but most said they did nothing. My recommendation-try for another teacher first so you don't waste your time and money.
Brilliant professor! Math is not an easy subject, so you have to come to class, pay attention, and do your homework. Dr. Hartog relates math with the everyday life. I took this same class during summer with a much younger teacher, who was more interested in proving himself than teaching the students. Dr Hartog is a mature, down to earth teacher.
Do not take this professor he barely teaches and expects you to know the material regardless
Dr. Hartog is an okay teacher. He assigns a lot of work to do which is rather time consuming. He is not the best when students ask for help. He just expects you to know things and just seems at a loss of words most of the time when questions are asked. He's okay but I would not recommend him if you're not good at math already.
Dr. Hartog goes out of his way to help you with the material. He is not easy and he will make you work for it. But that's the way it goes. You get what you put into the class so I don't agree with the other posts. Expect to work but just know he will help you and create office hours for your convenience so you can pass the course.
Even the math majors will hate this class. He expects your life to revolve around this course and expects you know the subject matter thoroughly before he teaches it. He is hands down the worst professor I've ever experienced. His teaching style is horrible, his personality is dry, and he is extremely unhelpful. TRUST ME AND AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
Judge this guy by his class. In my Liberal Arts Math class, he was a solid professor. Only gives 3 tests all year, plus a few quizzes. A couple of group projects were probably the worst part about the class, but he's a good option. Easy grader as well
LOVE HIM! Makes you struggle a little when introducing topics and makes you work hard for answers but always ready to help when you have questions. Go to office hours whenever you have a question and don't wait to long as he moves onto the next sections fairly quickly. Generalize the problems done in class as they do connect to quiz problems.
Dr. Hartog was a great professor in Math 105. There isn't any book use in class but you need to use it for the MyMathLab homework. Bi-Weekly problems of the week aren't hard and you can email him before they are due and he will give feedback so you can fix the problem for more points. He relates the course materials to the real world.
he starts the class before the expected time approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled time. he gives a lot of homework but never checks it. he lectures a lot but doesn't always go off powerpoint. The class is always activities not much notes to study for test
Dr. Hartog is an overall good professor. His lectures can be very boring, but he gives open note quizzes and allows an index card on exams. He only gave three exams including the final, and about ten quizzes. He can be a little confusing at times but if you pay attention you will do fine.
Started the year out with the maximum of 25 students, ended with 11. He occasionally encouraged other students drop out of the class. Not many students understood the material, which you figure he'd elaborate more, but instead he told us if we fail to prepare, we prepare to fail. Super inspirational, and really helped everyone pass the class, not.
The worst professor i have ever taken. 1st day of class he told me i was a slow processor and would never become a teacher. Avoid taking him at all costs he doesnt care about helping you succeed because he cant be touched because he has his 10 year.
Dr. Hartog is very intelligent but has terrible people skills and is not good at explaining the material to students. When a student doesn't understand a concept, he regularly questions them in a demeaning way as to why they don't get it. I learned more from Khan Academy and Youtube than his lectures to do well in this class.
He has no empathy for students and is not helpful when students ask for help. Dont take this course. So many people I know failed and had to retake.
Even with a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, this guy is still a terrible teacher. He belittles students, gives poor directions, and grades based on his opinion of the student. Dr. Hartog is not fair and was blatantly rude to students calling them stupid. He never provided much support and graded on a few assignments. Not even office hours helped.
Worst professor I've ever had. Will never take him again, save yourself the time and money and find a different professor. He is rude, a tough grader, and the test do NOT match his review guide. There are not enough words to describe his horrible teaching skills.
Hartog is a great man... sorta reminded me of my grandpa. He is so nice but definitely will not do the work for you.
Hartog was an amazing teacher and really helpful. He's not easily accessible by email, but the class was great. You're always working in groups and discussing answers as a class. He wants you to learn HOW to do the work and WHY the answer is what it is. He challenges your thinking and doesn't do the work for you. I have so much respect for him.
It's hard to say whether or not I like Professor Hartog. He is a kind man but can sometimes be moody. The best way to describe his teaching style is, if you are naturally good at math, you will be fine but if you struggle expect more of a struggle :/
Math is not an easy subject for me and Hartog does not make it any easier! He is rude, disrespectful and in his ways. If you did not have him for 105 do not even think about taking him for 106. He expects you to remember everything from 105 and how he taught it. I asked him to do a problem out on the board and his response was "I guess". The WORST
Worst man ever always is making fun of students and putting them down. He is an impossible grader old and decrepit too, not sure how he is still a professor must have no life, like who actually fails students.
HORRIBLE!! Stay clear of this professor, he grades hard, and is rude to his students. He is old-school. Half the class does terrible on his exams. Just stay clear dont even bother to take math with this professor. Worst professor ever
Dont waste your time, choose a diff professor or else good luck!
Hartog is a kind man, but the he makes the class difficult. He does not really teach he just talks at you, shows the work and expects you to understand with no clear breakdown or step by step. He also is not the best with doing things other ways, it's his way or no way. If you're good at math, most likely to past, if not you will struggle.
Professor Hartog was a decent teacher. He is confused when teaching a new topic, instead of answering your question, he will answer your question with another question. He will also keep bringing up Math 105, and keep saying you should've learned it already. Stay on the connect homework cuz he takes 25 off each day it's late and gives quizzes.
Tough grader, doesn't even answer your questions when you ask them. Avoided my table for the whole semester. Brings up MAT105 constantly. I wasn't even in Southern for 105. DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN
Professor Hartog is nice and will try his best to help, but it seems his "help" is not very helpful. His explanations confused me more and he wants you to understand and explain the material instead of just finding a simpler way of doing the work. YouTube is definitely your friend in this class, it's helped me more than Professor Hartog.
Tough grader, but fair. If you put in the work, you should do well. If you want a good grade simply handed to you, find someone else.
Professor Hartog is a tough grader and a tough professor. He won't explain anything to you and just expects you to figure it out. 100% would never take him again. Stay away from this professor if you can
He is a nice man and is always willing to help the students. However, he is not very helpful in his explanations. Definitely rely on the homework assignments online to figure out what is happening, especially since he does not go over everything in the homework, but he will take questions directly from the homework for his quizzes and tests.
Dr. Hartog is a very nice man, however his way of teaching may not resonate with everyone. The homework helps fill in the gaps that you are missing from his lectures. This class does have a project. Now having for two different classes, the biggest tip is to meet with him to go over the material, for he will account for it in your grade.
I took Hartog for 105 and 106. He gets a bad rep for being tough grader and a difficult professor but if you ask questions and take the time to put in the work he acknowledges that. He is almost always available to help after class and gives partial credit on test answers. end of semester is fast paces but use his office hours for help!
I had Dr. Hartog for both MAT 105 and 106 and he really grew on me. His teaching style is a little on the slow side but that worked to my advantage. It allowed me to make sure I'm comfortable with what we learned before we moved on to the next topic.
Mr. Hartog was a wonderful professor and person, I had him last semester for math 105. In the classroom, I struggled but then I went to his office hours and he was amazing and helpful, and even gave me a cookie! Unfortunately I heard that he passed away over the summer, and I think he was a great professor, thank you so much professor Hartog ❤️
