horrible teacher, do not recommend
Thinks we have all the time for his class. Online activities and long lectures. Lectures are not relevant to communication at all. Readings are tedious PDFs 30-50+ pages. Has an accent and Talks Too fast.
Hilbert seems like a smart, nice guy, but he does not know how to teach. He talks a lot and gets sidetracked, which wastes a ton of class time and makes it difficult to take notes. Also, the online and in-class material are irrelevant to digital communication.
Irrelevant to digital communication. Unorganized lectures and discussion. His tests are impossible, more than half the class failed! Does not know what he's doing. Though seems like a nice person he is a bad teacher!
Going into the M1 I did not know what to expect and coming out I had no idea how I did. But since this is his first quarter teaching here he is still adjusting and ended up disreguarding 10 questions AND curving. So a lot of people (including me) ended with 100% on M1. The material IS related to cmn though... idk what other people are talking about
There are a lot of complainers on here. Yes, Hilbert's class is difficult. Yes, the tests are hard. However, if you pay attention and do the work the class is very rewarding. Hilbert is a world class academic. He is the type of professor you woukd expect to see at Ivy League intisutuions. It is a shame lazy students rate him so poorly.
I also feel that the negative complainers below speculated on work-free credit. Yes, it requires work and one will have to pay attention. But Hilbert is a world renowned expert, with more real-world experience than all of the profs I've had together! Grow up, pay attention and do the work: you'll learn more relevant stuff than in any other class!
The reason why students say he's a good teacher on here is because he curved so high on his tests that an F ended up being a C. He is a nice guy but rambles on and on! The material is too dense, this class should be a graduate course!
LOL! I don't get it- finally a class with loads of relevant material that's for once up to date (big data, whistleblowing..), taught by a nice guy who knows all about the topic and people complain that he gives fair grades! But yes, you have to concentrate in class. I didn't get an A, but get inspired every class- wish more classes were like that
He is an unorganized teacher! He doesn't know what he's doing and if it weren't for his curve, more than half the class would be failing. The people who say he's an amazing lecturer are those who have an A because of his high curve. He may be a good person but he just can't teach.
This class is tough, the material isnt as simple as many would think. The teacher is very knowledgable and I learned a lot. Readings are lengthy, sometimes I get by without reading them. I'm not a cmn major, this is my first cmn class and I still got an A because I went to class and did the hw. This class is a lot of work but he curves.
All these bad ratings are because we're use to "fill in the blank, skip lectures and get A" classes. Don't get mad that Hilbert wants you to learn and grow! Up to date material make lectures interesting &VERY applicable. He is a decorated indiv with lots to share. Take it! Fav class&prof! I wish i could convince all my friends to take this class!!!
There is no way that you could not have gotten an A, because of the curve. If you failed this class it probably means you skipped class or was lazy and didnt do work. All you need to do is pay attention in class, do the readings and homework and understand by trying to apply the concepts into real life. What we should already be doing as students.
I feel bad for all the negative feedback this guy received. First and foremost, you have to come to class, do your work, read, & study or you will not pass .You will if you do! Not a huge surprise here, however, some people seemed so shocked. He is a genuinely nice professor who wants to help his students. He also has loads of experience in field.
I cannot recommend this course enough. By far the most inspiring, accomplished, and inspirational professor I have had at UC Davis. Professor Hilbert genuinely wants his students to learn, to understand, and to broaden their world-view. Attend class, do your work and you will do well. I have gained more from this class than any other thus far.
Dr. Hilbert is an example of someone who understands the point of exams. He doesn't test on items that come from memory, but rather on items that come from true understanding. I appreciate his "real-world" style and I highly recommend this course to anyone that wants to understand the impact of digital technology. Very interesting course!
I really enjoy professor's teaching style! He does not let you memorize all the staff, but wants you to understand! He curves, as long as you attend classes, it is not very hard for you to get A.
Professor Hilbert was amazing, I highly recommend taking his online class. There is weekly homework with readings and online discussions, but it takes at most 3 hours to finish. Grading is fair and 2 midterms are MC. He does test for understanding, but his lectures are EXTREMELY clear and he reiterates important points, you can't miss them.
This course was taken online and tests in person. The work load is fairly reasonable and doable, however tests are tough. If you keep up the readings and lecture videos you should be more than able to get an A in the course. He cares about concepts not memorization, which in my opinion what learning truly is.
This was a great online course! If you take the full time to watch the lectures and understand the content, you can easily succeed as well as learn a lot from a really interesting class. In addition, Prof. Hilbert is awesome and understanding and truly cares about the success of his students! Highly recommend.
If you actually watch all of the lectures, the class is not too hard. Lots of readings but they do not show up very often on the tests.
This course gives you a different perspective on how digital technology shapes our world. Very straight-forward; if you do the work, you'll get an A. I overall enjoyed this course and would recommend.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! This was by far one of the best courses and instructors I have ever taken in all my 6+ years of college. The course is SO INTERESTING and Prof Hilbert's lectures make the material very fun, relevant, and eye-opening. The content itself is not complicated by any means, however, you do have to put in the time; you'll enjoy it!
This guy is the bee's knees. The class is awesome, and generally very interesting. I took the online course, and had no trouble with the homework, however the tests do require that you actually understand the material. Definitely recommend him, and would take him again!
Honestly in the beginning I wasn't looking forward to this class, but it turned out to be incredibly interesting, and Professor Hilbert is awesome! The class is very straight forward, and as long as you do the work, watch the lectures, and study there is no reason you can't get an A. Ended up loving this class, and would totally take again!
I have mixed feelings about this class. I found the first half to be boring and the professor's accent off putting. Yet, the second half was super interesting and I actually learned a lot! The homework could seem daunting at times but it was graded easily and the readings were ridiculously long, so no one did them. Ok class. Wouldn't take again.
I honestly was scared of this class because people said it was so much work and that his exams were super hard. However, it is the kind of class that if you put the work in you'll get the grade you deserve. Yes, it is time consuming work but I have probably learned more in this class than any other CMN class at Davis. He's a great lecturer!
I am an ECS major, so compared to my majors upperdiv classes, this was very little "work." The class consists of online lecture videos (1 - 2 hours per week) which you absolutely must watch. There are also weekly assignments, usually writing a blog post or taking a short quiz based on readings. Midterm and final were fair. Lots of extra credit.
You have to take this class! This is one of the last courses I'm taking as an undergraduate student and I loved it. You can't memorize the information you learn and get away with it. He challenges you to think critically about the technological changes that are happening globally. If you take this class, you will learn.
This was a great and interesting class. There are about 2 hours of videos a week and some reading, not much. Every week you will either have a blog post or a reading quiz. If you watch the videos and read these should not be much of a problem. The midterm and final are fair. Watch the videos and the week of the exams just skim the videos again.
Great professor and great class. He is very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Would definitely take again. He offers a fair amount of extra credit to assure that people have an opportunity to do very well. Exams are very fair if you do the work and watch the lectures, which are interesting.
Professor Hilbert has been one of my fave teachers at Davis. His lectures are very clear, and the online format means that you can rewatch them on your own time. He is very quick to respond on Piazza, and he makes himself accessible online and for office hours. The course was enjoyable and straightforward. Super recommended!
Dr. Hilbert lectures on very relevant topics that are current and up to date for the most part. No textbook which saves you money. He fully utilizes the online component of the class. You definitely get what you put into the class. Easy A if you do what he tells you which is listen to lectures, take notes, and understand concepts (assignments help)
Dr Hilbert really makes sure you understand the complicated topics we talked about in class. I took the online one, and I found his online lectures really helpful because they were so interactive (he asked questions, showed videos, made it funny...). You DO have to study a lot (this is a university after all!), but it's pretty enjoyable!
Dr. Hilbert is wonderful, funny, and captures every aspect teaching a concept and testing the student on knowing the concept. Not the memorization skills of a student. This will be an enjoyable class, you can even take your tests OFF CAMPUS. Be prepared to work hard, this class requires you to really put in the time and work.
Professor Hilbert is great, inspirational instructor.. But, a lot of works to do! Especially if you are planning to take it in summer with another course, it might be too much. Overall, his lecture is very interesting as he gives us practical information and lessons.
This class is a lot of work but Professor Hilbert is clear. There's one midterm and one final. I thought this class would be easy because it's online so I didn't put as much work into it as I should have. The only way to pass is to put all of your effort into it.
Pretty cool online class, midterm and final and weekly assignments online. Pretty simple and as long as you do the video lectures, understand it and take notes and review, you should be good. Bad side is that there is no study guide but its not as bad as it seems. Would recommend him just do the online lectures and pay attention. Pretty good class.
I was super overwhelmed at the beginning of this class because it is a lot of work-- tons of reading and lectures. But I ended up getting A's on everything. Just put the time in and make sure you really understand the lectures and you will do fine. I learned a lot of interesting things; he has a ton of real world knowledge.
Lots of work in regard to reading and lectures. Lectures were very long and often followed by a reading quiz or online discussion. Midterm and Final were challenging and questions were often very tricky. Midterm will make or break you for the rest of the quarter. Not much extra credit and online discussion are graded harshly
Dr Hilbert has truly created a unique class. There was no textbook, just video lectures and articles/published papers. The videos are lively and very interesting. Midterm was very fair. He really cares about his students and tells us we can email him with questions at anytime we want. He is fast at responding to emails. Take good notes!
Best laid out online class I've ever taken. The lecture videos were engaging and thought-provoking. Bear in mind, though, that he tests for knowledge on exams so passively watching the videos and skipping the reading will set you back quite a bit. My only gripe is how the assignments are weighted, but after all, it is an online class.
Professor Hilbert was humorous and engaging even through an online format. His lectures were well-explained and thought out. As long as you watch lectures there should be 0 problems. His exam was very fair and he even gives out extra credit (the whole totaling to 6% of the grade). I cannot imagine someone doing horribly unless they never watched.
Watch all the lectures and be sure to take really good notes on both readings and lectures. As long as you are actively paying attention and keeping up with the course, it's a breeze. I'd say the most tedious part of the course was the online discussions as some of them required an extensive amount of time to work on. Overall, it's an easy course.
I would probably avoid taking this class if possible. He doesnt give a study guide & you have a midterm&final &weekly assignments. The videos are okay but not the greatest and if you do take him, just make sure you pay attention to the videos & what he says & take good notes, especially on the little fun facts he says cause they could be on test.
The class is very lecture heavy, each week the lecture videos last around 2-3 hours. There is a lot of information in each week, make sure you take detailed notes. The tests aren't memorization they are understanding. There is a lot of reading. He gives you sample questions but doesn't give any study guides. He does give up to 3 points extra credit
Wonderful guy. Fantastically constructed online lectures with use of a green screen. Reasonable, fair, and experienced guy. The experience reflects in the lecture quality. Everybody's different, but I watched the slides once a week and all at once a second time before the tests and did great. I'd say get a good start it's pretty easy to, then relax
This class was the hardest I have ever taken, there was multiple readings each week which were very dense and hard to understand. For the tests, there is no study guide or clear outline of specifics to know which makes studying for it hard, you truly have to know EVERYTHING. He is a nice teacher but expects a lot from students.
One of the best courses I have taken at UCD! Hilbert is passionate about digital tech evident through his engaging lectures. You will have to put a lot of time & effort into watching lectures, reading the assigned readings, and put effort into the assignments, TAs can grade harsh. I was 1 of the 53 students who passed with an A so it is do-able!
Pretty difficult class. Lots of large, pretentious, and nonsensical words just thrown around, often without adequate explanation. Guy obviously is pretty passionate about the subject. Very Long online lectures, lots of reading, lengthy discussions. MT is 30% Final is 40% Online assignments 30%. TAs were pretty easy graders. Confusing exams.
This class is doable if you're willing to sit down and go through 2-3 hours of videos and reading each week - More if you're taking notes. The course material isn't easy and if I'm being honest the Professor also seemed to have a bit of an ego - he randomly assigned articles he'd written and had us watch his tedtalk. I wouldn't recommend the class
Hard tests. Do the extra credit! He wants to help out but is also very fair. Dont expect any handouts, you have to work hard for an A. Put in the work and it'll pay off. Online class so much manage time well. Would take again, as this was a true Upper Division class
Dr. Hilbert is a very smart person that delivers up-to-date, innovative content. I've taken several courses with him, as well as research projects. I'm definitely confused by the negative comments as he's an asset to the school, and is understanding of his students when needed.
Amazing new course. There are guest lecturers from all the other UC campuses. We were also able to explore computational tools. I wish this course was offered sooner, and I hope other online courses are modeled after this one. Keep on top of the schedule, follow recommendations on how to do well and you WILL.
3 hours of lecture with graded embedded questions and an hour for an interactive lab, but more likely two more hours for notes and continuing to play around with the lab. DON'T take if you want an easy A, but DO for lectures from profs of all UCs, if you are interested in how computers and social science interact, want to code, web scrape, and more
avoid this class, unless you are a part time student or you want to spend 3 hours every day on this class. Lot of videos to watch and way too much readings. not easy assignments either. no study guide for midterm and final. tricky multiple choice questions with 6-7 option answers. you have to understand and apply the concept to have a chance to pas
Prof Hilbert's class was amazing and very insightful. Yes, it takes time to watch all the lectures and complete all the work each week. But if you truly make an effort, you will understand the concepts, be able to apply them to your own examples, and you will succeed in this class. I did that just that scored a 100% easily. He is a smart man.
I honestly think that the people that wrote that they got 100% on the exam by just watching the videos was actually the professor. The exams are extremely hard and require very specific answers. The exams are multiple choice but have 5-6 answer choices which is insane. He expects you to put in way to much time, this class is for part time students
I thought Prof. Hilbert had a very challenging course and the content was dense but oh my god was it interesting and well informed. I felt like an idiot in the class, however I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I genuinely loved this class. It filled me with so much knowledge. I want to take more big data classes but they're all online. That's the only fall back. Online classes tend to be all consuming. Watching and re-watching video lectures can be a pain. They are 4-5 hours a week but if you're actually taking notes that time tends to double
Do not take this if you are not serious about the subject. I thought the class sounded somewhat interesting and liked that it was an online course. But I ended up not being very interested and that made watching the lectures painful especially the graded questions embedded in the lecture videos. The proctored tests are also very disorganized.
Don't take this class unless you can make time to most office hours, if not all. Be prepared to have an online course that has heavy workload/content (interesting though), BUT, the professor is awful at resolving students' questions. Many students run across problems either caused by the system or poor wording for questions. Take class at your disc
This isnt an easy A class, its not something that is a last minute kinda thing. Yes, you actually have to pay attention. But is it really hard? Absolutely not. He literally gives you everything that you need to do well. People who complain are the ones that dont watch the lectures and dont care about the class. Its seriously not bad.
Some data in the videos are outdated since they were made before 2014. I hope there could be more data focusing on the global than North/South America. Sometimes I need to look for extra explanation online since Prof. Hilbert didn't always explain the concepts clearly. Lots of study load, exams are hard, but the prof will give fair bonus points.
Online class organization is convoluted. The layout makes you feel overwhelmed because its just so messy! Video-lec. with embedded graded questions are designed 2 trick you. Youll get through an entire section only to realize something is missing probably because a portion of the assignment was tucked away somewhere. Class needs to be simplified!
For a communications class, I expected better, more professional communication from the prof and TA. Ask a question about an online lab assignment due in 5 days? Get an answer AFTER the assignment is due. Cool. Technical difficulties regarding the course content? You will get a "let me Google that for you" link as a reply. You're on your own.
You will be watching up to 3 hours worth of videos, so this would only be feasible if you have alot of time. Labs are pretty easy to do. Exams are very hard so you need to deeply understand every single thing to do well. Never again.
This professor is the worst! His weekly lectures are so time consuming and he's never really clear with material. I only took a couple of fun facts from his class. He loves to bring up his accomplishments to the point that I would roll my eyes every time. He doesn't give study guides and test questions are very detailed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I enjoyed Professor Hilberts class. I would highly suggest that you form study groups to prep for the midterm and final! The material can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have another classmate to help and work with you, you will be fine. The discussion homework's were fun and easy. Make sure you keep up with the videos!
Professor Hilbert is a very good professor! Although I will say that for this class, it was a lot of work. There are online lectures that can be quite tedious, plus reading. There are also weekly discussions and/or reading quizzes. He gives extra credit which is also a plus! Be ready to put in a lot of time for this class!
Do not take this professor. "Teaches" off of video lectures and old data from 5-10 years ago and does not to any answer emails. Take at your own risk.
If you like topics in tech like AI or social media, this class is great. You can't skip the video lectures. They're bite-sized (some are 5-10 min, others 15, in total they're 2-3 hours/week). What I did was I spent an hour every M W F to watch videos and I took notes for each video. Sometimes wording can be confusing, but he walks you through lab.
The class is easy, with everything done through video lectures, but he is a very unaccommodating professor who won't answer any questions, just tells students to figure it out themselves, and doesn't seem to care about what students have going on outside of class (other than stating that he cares).
He was so dismissive of students' needs, especially Black students who are not only handling a pandemic that disproportionately affects Black people, but also fighting 400+ years of oppression in this country. He said "things come up" and when we called him out for being racist, he continued to make misogynistic comments. -5/5 if I could.
Computer Science and Social Science in one. If you're interested in going that way then take this class. So much of life is trouble shooting and the professor expects you to be able to trouble shoot. That being said he won't hold your hand. The grade you receive is reflective of your effort and ability to troubleshoot and time management.
The class material overall is extremely interesting, I loved it. The guest professors were all super cool and interesting. The professor himself was... okay. We had a large Piazza discussion about BLM and making the final more flexible. In the beginning he was a hard cookie to break but he ended up doing something but it took a really long while.
This class was had great material to learn. I enjoyed it. This is my second class with professor Hilbert and the reoccurring theme is very hard exams that count for most of your grade. Do everything and if you want an A on the exams study hard and you will get it. The material is not hard only the exams are.
Dont take him. All the negative reviews on here are correct. He doesnt care about teaching. Outdated lectures, technical issues he didnt care to resolve, annoyingly egotistical, doesnt explain anything well. He wants you to teach yourself. 1 unit 2 hrs of lecture, and he suggests you watch 3 times to understand? Come on. Outrageous
This is the worst class i have ever taken. Lectures are 2-3 hours long. I enrolled in the class because I am a communication major but this class is everything but that. literally hardest, most boring, and heaviest class ever. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR
Awful professor who is very hands off and chooses to ignore his students when he does not feel like answering a question. Ridiculously hard midterm and final worth most of your grade and he refuses to help his students. This class is entirely on your own and the professor is condescending and rude to all his students.
He has very outdated lectures. Every week you have an interactive lectures, where you answer a question every few minutes and he has some answers that are inappropriate. He does not care for his students. He only communicates through piazza and barely replies. I would not recommend!!
This class is fine... you can get an A if you put in the work and study for the exams. Lectures are long and there are weekly assignments due on Sundays. The worst was a video of yourself giving a presentation, which is just too much work for one week assignment in my opinion. Most of the assignments are writing based. Definitely not an easy A.
Professor Hilbert pretty much upset everyone in class. He was not responsive to feedback, dismissive of concerns, and overall was just frustrating to take a class with. Really long lectures that he expects you to watch 2-3 times to pass (they're 1-2 hours per week) and points are skewed really crookedly. If this class wasn't required, I would avoid
Professor Hilbert made this class way more difficult than it had to be. His grading system is odd, there's lots of homework, and trick questions on proctored exams. He's also not very accessible to talk to and really doesn't seem to care about student success. Didn't curve the midterm even though the class average was a C.
Has some of the most confusing lecture slides I have ever seen. His lectures are pre-recorded and very long. His lecture videos also require you to answer questions, which are graded, and if you answer them wrong you will miss points. Discussions were graded harshly. Also, I just barely took the midterm and received a C (which never happens to me)!
The lectures are long and can be a lot for each week. The assignments were relatively easy with videos explaining how to do them. The professor was not accessible at all. Barely communicated with students. The tests were okay. Tricky but as long as you rewatch the lectures before them, you should be okay.
Layout is awful. So many errors in slides, quiz & exam questions. Its confusing on purpose. Prof is totally absent, rarely responds to Piazza. This class is like a full time job. Content is actually interesting if the assignments werent so unnecessarily complicated. Always going to end up with work on the weekends due to the structure.
I can see why people found this class frustrating. However, I want to advocate for taking it anyways. It was one of my most interesting classes. Do not take this class if you are determined to get an A I had to give up on that dream pretty fast. One frustrating thing for me was the heavy use of multiple choice questions which were often confusing.
Content is definitely thought-provoking content due to its relevance. However, the online format (pre-recorded) and the amount of material itself requires discipline to not procrastinate or else you'll be cramming like I did before deadlines/exams. Professor could have been more communicative but he offered a lot (60 pts) worth of extra credit.
DO NOT listen to the bots that are flooding this professor with 5 stars. Honestly, I would downvote moreso than a 1 if I could. This guy is HORRIBLE at explaining things and is so test heavy. This class is awful and its sad because it is an interesting topic but such a bad professor to explain it. STAY FAR away from this course. Horrible 0/10.
I have no idea how UC Davis hired this guy. It is so sad to see the UC system go downhill with professors like this running a class. Hilbert is so test heavy and puts the most random nonsense on the midterm / final. I can barely understand what he is saying in the pre-recorded lectures as well. UC Davis took a BIG L hiring this guy. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Hilbert EXPECTS you to watch PRERECORDED lecture videos 3 times in order to get the grade you want. The average on our midterm was so low he failed to tell everyone the class average and just said "10% of you guys got an A". This guy is a joke and expects people who are taking his class that its the only thing they are working on. AWFUL.
I put "hilarious" in the above category because it is absolutely comical this guy thinks his class deserves as much time as he expects students to rewatch lectures. He actually expects you to rewatch his weekly lectures at least 3x over or you wont get a good grade. Worst class I have taken at UCD by far. As a graduating senior, stay away.
This is not an easy class it's doable, but it will take a lot of time to understand the concepts.
Tbh, I don't know why so many people found this class to be difficult. I feel like the pandemic has made some of us lazy lol. Just take notes on what he has to say in lectures, memorize, and you'll do great even with minimal effort. The material is interesting fr. Kinda funny to me how people in different majors have different mentalities.
Professor Hilbert is incredibly intelligent. He expects a good amount of work from his students. Watch his lectures. Take good notes. His course isn’t terribly challenging, but it does require hard work and dedication. An A is possible if you put in the effort. Dedicate at least 4-6 hours of studying per week. Good luck l!
One thing I was impressed was how he brings current popular topics such as Metaverse into the lectures. I feel like students who pursue a communication related career or want to do communication research could all benefit from these perspectives and ideas taught in class. Very useful undergraduate level communication class, which is rare.
This class was overall a great time once you've understood the required pace to keep up with it and applying yourself. The lectures are easy to navigate and re-watch, and he's very passionate about the subjects at hand. I think if you're ready to challenge yourself and learn about relevant online comm. technologies, this class is a good choice.
Not an easy class, but really not too difficult either - just time consuming! Lecture heavy and lots of work, but it really isn’t hard work. Put in the time and you’ll do well. Offers EC and answers email/piazza often. I like the online format. Uses Examity for proctored exams. Exam questions were worded strangely!
WORST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I have always been a straight A student, but I got a D in this class! I did the calculations and every week you had to do 7 HOURS worth of watching lectures! To make it worse he tells you to watch all the lectures 3 times over before the exams to get a good grade. That would mean 210 hours of studying before the final.
Yeah thank god I was only taking this for the financial aid and didn't need the credit, because this class was impossible. I gave up at the end and just took a nonpass. Insanely long lectures and doesn't explain anything. He would get on us too for getting bad grades. Also uses EXAMITY which is the worst. He made this class unnecessarily difficult.
This class was awful, don't recommend it. Why were the lectures so long?! Also, he made everything due at 8:59 pm instead of 11:59 pm like a normal person, so if you were running a little late too bad. On top of the insanely long lectures you had weekly projects that took like 2 hours to do. Terrible professor with an ego. DON'T TAKE IT.
This class was a handful. Weekly pre-recorded interactive lectures with questions that are super confusing. Weekly labs that were occasionally fun but not clear on grading. Did offer extra credit which saved my grade and late work for 35% off each day.
Do NOT take this class if you have a tough quarter. This class is INCREDIBLY lecture heavy and you will not pass if you don't plan on MASTERING concepts (I watched his 40-50min long lectures 3-4 times each). If you enjoy learning about how we got to where we are technology wise, sure give it a shot. Exams are also unclear and require rereading.
Prof Hilbert is talented and humanistic. He has heavy lectures and the exams are not easy, but he will give many extra opportunities to the class. Don't submit HWs late, the late penalties are the main reason for losing points. If you are interested in cutting edge content that integrates information technologies with society, take his class
Honestly, I don't understand why people heavily criticize this class, yes it's demanding and requires you to have an understanding of the concepts but so does every other class. I put in a normal amount of effort(watched lectures and submitted assignments on time) and received a 99%. Don't let other reviews scare you from taking this class.
I really don't want him to think it was too easy and increase difficulty. You have to actually watch the lectures and pay attention. I really got stress that people complaining about difficulty didn't even do the bare minimum engagement, let alone what he suggests to (easily) succeed in the class. I watched a ton of people doing things last second.
The class does have long lectures and heavy workload, but it's not as bad as it sounds. Just follow the deadlines, study the material, and follow the instructions for the labs and you will be fine. It could be hard when you are taking it during a regular quarter with two or more other courses but the professor offered lots of extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This class is super lecture heavy and tests you on tiny specific details. On top of that, weekly lab assignments run on programs that never work properly. Lectures have playposit quizzes. Exams are proctored. Unless you plan on spending more time on this class than any other classes, don't take this class
I spent two years at UC Davis, and this was the most bizarre and incomprehensible class I took. I do not recommend taking it. The tests and questions are so badly written, containing numerous grammatical and spelling errors. The lectures are disorganized and seem purposefully complicated. I got A's and B's in all my courses at Davis but a D here.
If you're looking for a class that is incredibly lecture heavy to the point where you need to remember every word he says for a span of 2-4 hours a week then this is your class. He openly states there are lots of topics, deeming it impossible to remember every word spoken and that he would do more generalized questions but they were very specific.
This is the most difficult class I have taken in ucdavis for three years. Both the content and the sentences are difficult to understand. The words he used in lectures and exams were difficult to understand. Students need to listen to his lectures for more than2hours every week. It is completely incomprehensible to listen to this lecture only once.
I've benefited greatly from auditing CMN 170V. I found myself utilizing learned frameworks to articulate my ideas more clearly and effectively, during my poster presentation about a phone app study. As with any course, you get out of it what you put in and I can personally say you can get a lot out of it.
The concepts in this class are hard to understand. However, the professor provides a lot of extra credits and gives upward grades at the end of the quarter based on your total effort and performance. If you finish the weekly assignment seriously and make progress on the final exam, you will get a good grade.
NOT RECOMMEND. Unorganized lectures. He just post 2.5 hours lecture every week on canvas and you have to watch it otherwise you will fk up. And lectures is so unorganzied and you have to be careful and watch it at least twice. And exams are hard and based on lecture details. Thanks to the extra credit in the end otherwise I wouldn't get an A.
poorly constructed exams, questions hinge on shallow memorization. lectures are understandable if given time but not clear. assignments border on unreasonable (i say this with a 100% in this category, 500-1000w/ 10 minute videos for 3pt is not okay) however professor accessible and generous. overall meh.
A lot of homework that is not too hard but very time consuming. Studying for exams is only way to pass and extra credit helps a lot. He is very understanding and wants you to pass is what I have learned since he worked with me to do some late assignments and pass the course
The concepts in this class are hard to understand. The class was very lecture-heavy, especially for an online course, it was a good 4 hours a week of interactive lectures. The questions were often upsettingly hyper-specific on tests and throughout the lectures. I am a straight-A student and I struggled through this one. I cried after the midterm:/
I thought this was going to be a difficult course based on the reviews, but it was relatively easy compared to my stem courses. Class structure is well-defined and expectations are made clear. Getting an A is very doable as long as you pay careful attention to the lectures. Extra credit also boosted my grade by 8%.
I held off taking this class because of the reviews. However, it is so much easier than I expected it to be. As long as you rewatch lectures and take notes, you'll easily pass the tests. extra credit also boosts your grade -- i had a 105% going into the final. you'll be fine, but you will have to make the time and effort.
Warning: Procrastinator don't enter :) If you are not a procrastinator like me and delay all online lectures to the last day, this course should not be so hard.
Highly recommended class for those with GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT skills- not suitable for procrastinators. I achieved over 100% with extra credit so take advantage! No prior knowledge required. Every point matters, so watch lectures once then again take notes & you should be fine. Was also taking 4 other courses and it was doable.
If you re-watch his videos before midterm exams, you'll do fine. He also provides lots of extra credit opportunities.
Very time consuming course for an online class. Heavy lecture and good memory is needed for this class. Lots of video lectures to watch.
Convinced that this professor has written all of these "5 star reviews" on here to make himself look good and get students to take his class. Do NOT take this class, please, save yourself. Unbelievably confusing tests, trick lecture questions for credit every week, and very weird discussion posts. Just don't.
He is an intellectual person but if you are not an expert in the theory of digital comm and do not have a photographic memory DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Heavy proctored quizzes must memorize his video lectures you will fail. DQs are fine but he is way to complicated and everything is misspelled do yourself a favor and do not take this class.
Superhuman memory is needed for this class omg. Overall so confusing idk what is with these reviews but he claimed he was disappointed in our class and never had to hand out extra credit before. The extra credit also was like hours of dumb surveys we had to fill out and was worth literally nothing. Also does not show your grade.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof is SO inaccessible. Reached out to him + TA multiple times to no response. He is clearly intelligent but extremely disorganized. Hard to tell which material is actually crucial/relevant to exams. Tests on specific ideas rather than overarching themes. Disappointed because the content is interesting, but class is awful.
Please do not take this class, I made the mistake of trusting all the positive reviews. I watch his lectures and do all the assignments, but his tests and lecture questions are all trick questions. Very smart, but being a professor is not his strong suit. The material is presented in a confusing way, and he does not take feedback well at all.
Even with the extra credit that this prof provides, the class itself is extremely stressful with no guides whatsoever. Just a bunch of videos full information thrown at us, expected to know every minuscule concept because ANYTHING will be put on exams. Most of us don't know what we should even study because there is no help. Very tedious & annoying
This is the worst communication course I have taken. The class concept has potential but his lectures are just him rambling about concepts with no actual structure. Refuses to give a study guide and takes away fractions of points on assignments just because he can. He is clearly knowledgable about the topic but does not know how to teach.
Avoid if you can it's not worth your time I have an A+ (100.88%) and I would still NOT recommend it just wastes your brain cells tbh. You have to REALLY pay attention to his lectures because he likes to yap and talk a lot and then quizzes you on something random that he says. NOT an easy A, you have to actually put in HELLAA work and pay attention
Undoubtedly he is an expert in this field. However, in his course, you must spend many times in his lectures & Discussions. The MT is relatively hard but he also assigns extra credit (around 10%, but still time-consuming). You can easily pass this course however you can hardly get an A.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! He is an expert in the field BUT he does NOT know how to lecture in a way that is easy for college students to understand. He is arrogant when students complain about his teaching style. He will lecture like we're his colleagues but we are students learning it for the first time!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR HORRIBLE CLASS!!!! Do not take this class even If you need it, his exams had very little to do with lectures. it is impossible to pass this class even with studying 30+ hours a week and for DAYSSS before the midterm/final. Never been more repulsed by a class.
This course requires a certain degree of caring about the course content. If you are not naturally interested in concepts like blockchain, AI, etc. dont take this course, it will not stick. This is not your typical 'communications' course. If you do well mostly being self taught and not needing a whole lot of specific direction, you should be fine.
It's really hard to understand this class without either prior experience or painstakingly teaching the material to yourself. He is not a great teacher, and you can't pass without outside resources. His exams are based around small details that are easily missed, and he loves trick questions. Do everything in your power to avoid taking this course.
The most difficult professor I've ever had. His whole intent for the class is to purposely overflow us with information that we have to filter out to prepare us for the real world. This is a valid intention, but his execution is inconsiderate when it comes to his exam questions. He refuses to tell us any specificity of topics that will me covered.
People are calling this the hardest class ever and saying DO NOT TAKE IT. However, I do not think it was that bad. I am not the smartest person ever, but I put in the work by watching the lectures, taking notes, and studying for tests, as you should with any class. I finished with an A-, and I think a B would not have been hard to achieve.
Just a bad bad very bad class. Please don't listen to the dude below me. They're trippin and simply not telling the truth. Save yourself and don't take this class. Super unorganized curriculum and the most confusing lectures and homework I've ever had. The grading system is also horrendous. Don't take this class it actuality is terrible.
the worst professor ive taken, he would tell us giving study guides/curves wont "help you in the real world" is the frustrating thing. lectures are confusing and exams are asking specific things thats mentioned in lectures despite wanting us to understand concepts. overload of info and its hard to filter when you have to remember the little things.
The info you get during lectures doesn't match what is on the exams. Professor prides themselves on purposely giving you excess, useless info and leaving it to you to work out. Considers himself the arbiter of future employment, and told the entire class to change their attitude if they want jobs on Piazza. No study guides or help outside of class.
NOOOOO do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF I'M SO SERIOUS! I don't know how clear and brutally honest I can be, but take this as a warning to NOT take this class, even if it's online it is not worth a bad grade and additional stress. HORRIBLE structure and teaching style I am on the verge of tears I wish I didn't enroll
Hilbert does not make any effort to accommodate or help his students because "that's not how the real world works." He makes his lectures confusing, exam questions are hyperspecific, and he takes fractions of points off assignments for no reason. I only got an A because I put more time into this course than my other three classes combined.
He seemed okay before, but now that the class is ending his true true colors show. We use Piazza where students ask questions. Many of us failed the final exam which speaks volumes about his teaching when we ask about a curve/talk abt concerns, he responded with threats about future employment and gave us generic responses copied from previous DQS.
A disappointing end to a mediocre class. The content wasn't extremely difficult, but the final exam questions weren't representative of core concepts and the professor told students to "check your attitude" when various students inquired about a curve on the final. Too large of a class (~700 students) and not enough TAs for personalized help.
This online UCD course differs from in-person classes, with interaction limited to forums. Assignments are deadline-based, but exams are time-locked. Course covers a lot of theory & history. Take thorough notes, as even brief examples may appear on exams. The class is challenging, but 58% achieved a B or higher, and extra credit was available.
The course is a very interesting class to take if you want to learn about the popular current topics like AI and metaverse. But recommand it for credit? No. The professor don't offer a study guide and you really need to plan out things. But just speaking as the goal object for "learning" I think it's time worthy to take the class.
This course had SO MUCH work. The content is interesting but the format is annoying and time-consuming. Labs are pretty easy and you'll receive credit if you just follow the instructions. Thankfully, there are a lot of extra credit opportunities. Exams were ok but stressful given that it's proctored and require surveillance of personal space.
This class is very hard. Its
Absolutely loved him. The class is hard like chemistry or trig. Takes up more bandwidth than other classes. The class is 10 weeks of online prerecorded material. He has a nice personality and is easy to listen to, explains things well, likeable. Responsive to messages. HE is great. The CONTENT is hard. Get behind in this class & you won't make it.
wow.. this course is very time-intensive and dense. The ~2.5 hours of weekly content in 5-min video segments filled with questions are tedious to get through though interesting and relevant. The material isn't hard if you stay on top of assignments, and exams are fair if you pay attention. TAs grade labs leniently if ALL instructions are followed.
Over 150 assignments. Weekly videos (usually 2.5 hours, sometimes it ranged up to 4) AND weekly projects. Videos have question in them that can be frustratingly worded, meaning its easy to get 50% on them. Doesn't matter in the end since the exams are basically your whole grade. He himself is a great professor, funny, interesting, but good lord.
The course content is boring and the lectures have no focus.
Prof. Hilbert structured the course so that with effort, the course is doable and rich in content. I am not a programmer nor a techie and I grasped the concepts really well and thought his explanations and examples were invaluable. He is super accessible and cares a lot about how and if his students are learning the material.
idk why people are saying his class is 4/5 difficulty when I think the assignments are very doable, they're just long. As long as you watch all the lecture and go through all the modules that he set up and organized guaranteed youll pass with at least an A- (if u study well for the exams) if not a B, but he curves at the end. 1 midterm + 1 final
This class is extremely time intensive and overwhelming. Lectures vary from 2-4 hours and this does not count the time that you will have to pause the lectures to take notes. Overall, this class took up my ENTIRE weekends without fail every week. I had three other classes that, combined, did not take as much time and effort as this class did.
Took this class cause the content sounded interesting, but his lectures were composed of so much rambling and talking about topics as if we already have extensive knowledge that it was frustrating. Overall, lectures were too long, unorganized, and annoying. However, I admit I did learn a good amount about digital tech through this course. :/
He is very knowledgeable, but not a good professor. He didn't provide any practice exams, and during the actual exams, we couldn't go back to review previous questions. Each recorded lecture has some questions, and if you make a mistake, there's no opportunity to correct it and get the credit, which I personally think is unnecessary.
Worst course experience anyone can ever have. Trust me when I say this, just DON'T TAKE HIM. The workload is absolutely ridiculous, lectures and readings are very confusing and poorly constructed. Expect to waste A LOT of time. He also doesn't provide any help regarding the heavily weighted exams, claiming "you are on your own in the real world."
This class is not for the procrastinator. However, if you have strong time management skills, you will excel. The lectures were incredibly engaging, and the professor was fair in grading. He genuinely wanted students to succeed and provided opportunities to earn extra points. The lectures and online interface were well-designed and executed.
The workload for this class was so incredibly time-intensive. The professor says himself that he intends to overload us with information. Also, most of the points are worth five or less. The content is not necessarily difficult, it's only that the professor means to complicate it. If you value your time and well-being, don't take this professor.
He has a very strong ego compared to the knowledge he has. Materials are very outdated and he uses them everywhere. Would not take his class again.
There's no work around to avoiding his class but just know it will be the worst quarter / 10 weeks of your life. His lectures are always super dense, with no clear guide as to what exam material is on. His labs for both CMN 150V and CMN 170V were extremely time consuming and it was hard to reach out to either a TA or professor for help. Big yikes!
Do not take this Professor, it was legitimately the worst course I've ever taken with the most unconcerned Professor who couldn't care at all how you do. Do yourself a favor do NOT take his courses!
The professor is clearly passionate, maybe even too much, considering how he overcomplicates his research. In my entire UCD career I have not encountered a more overly complicated and difficult curriculum. He explicitly mentions that he expects a B- average for final grades, which would be fine if he was teaching quantum mechanics. But he's not.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had in my 3 years of being at UCDavis. I hope he retires soon so nobody else has to endure this god awful class. He doesn't believe in study guides and just throws a bunch of information into his exams and expects you to pass. Completely delusional professor.
IT IS A PRIVILEGE to learn from Professor Hilbert. Look at his background. I almost didn't take this class even though I was interested in the topic because of bad reviews. They are lazy students. He is so intelligent, and the work is SO doable.he also cares alot about student success and learning. Trust me and take this class if you're interested
He is a very difficult instructor and this was the hardest class I've ever taken. He prides himself on and even states that he intends to overwhelm students by overloading them with information. He expects students to process everything and determine what is worth remembering/studying. The exams are very unpredictable because of this.
Hilbert is a tough but objectively fair professor, his exams are hard but he actively gives you the tools to succeed without explicitly saying so. Theres a lot of topics and concepts and it can be confusing, but just study a bit more than you normally do and you should be fine.
Great profesor who really knows and is passionate about what he teaches. Just stay on top of labs and due dates and take advantage of extra credit!! It really helps in the end. Lectures are key for exams so just make sure to review them (offers video lectures too) and use all of the study tools and recommendations he offers. Awesome class/content!
great prof,i was thinking to drop based on past reviews, just make sure to attend lectures even though he has posted lectures on his youtube channel, also make sure to submit all labs on time(pls just use ai and speak/yap confidently for some of the labs) he infact encourages the use of AI.also there are some quizzlets which were very hepful.
